elcome to the July issue – containing a very special ‘USA in Bahrain’ supplement, officially endorsed by the US Embassy in Bahrain, which we publish as an ongoing tribute to the special relationship that exists between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United States of America.

In the interview section this month, we spoke to renowned Bahraini musician, Mai Alqasim, who told us about her battle to stay alive. She talks about her painful journey and how it inspired the release of an original sound track, aside from a beautiful rendition of Heal the World, for which she collaborated with several talented local and Bahrain-based musicians.

For the USA in Bahrain segment, we had a very insightful chat with Chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Bahrain, Margaret Nardi, who has witnessed some trailblazing developments in relations between the two nations since her arrival. In addition, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham Bahrain), Qays Zu’bi, touched on US-Bahrain relations, the benefits of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and more. The Executive Director of AmCham Bahrain, Mary McGinnis, on the other hand, highlighted the many benefits of being a member of AmCham and how the organisation has grown over time.

In our dining section, we present you with a selection of our favourite eateries across the island that serve the finest of American cuisine. Don’t blame us if some are missing; everyone was given a chance to participate!

In the motoring section, Dick Potter takes us on a brief tour of the US motoring industry and its contributions to the field of ‘automania’!

Bill Grieve, our very own ‘Prince of the Wadi’ (on Tik-Tok) makes a huge splash as he takes us through the exciting world of wind-watersports on the shores of Bahrain’s very own Nurana islands. hen May Alqasim was told by her doctors that her days on earth were numbered due to Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis causing liver malfunction, she sifted through all her achievements and awards acquired throughout her career in music and asked herself if she’d done enough. “Have I done enough for this country? Enough to give back? The answer was no,” says the 30-yearold Bahraini vocalist. “So, I decided to do a cover of Michael Jackson’s iconic song, Heal the World. I believed it is a message we all needed to hear at this time.”

What started as a modest project, grew into a massive collaboration with over 20 local artists and technical experts under 1LoveProductions. May was at a low point at the time, angry and confused about her health condition. “I had been misdiagnosed, wrongly medicated, not honoured by insurance companies and the rumours were that I had Hepatitis B and had abused the bottle, when in fact my illness was genetic and beyond my control.” she rues. While she was grappling with the raw deal that life had dealt her, she realised that she wasn’t alone; the whole world was in trauma thanks to the global pandemic. “I felt selfish about thinking ‘why me’, and realised that we need to love and lift one another up at this time of crises.”

May experienced serious bouts of being on the brink of death from the time the idea for the cover song struck her to it being released.

“Internal bleeding put me in a semi coma.

The blood banks were running out of blood for me. My heart had even stopped at one

point.” When she came out of the ICU, she was overwhelmed to see the rally of support from her family, friends, acquaintances and strangers to find donors for her rare blood type. This strengthened her resolve to see her project being completed. “It is my tribute to all those who helped and stood by me. The closer I felt to death, the more urgency this song had,” May says. “I don’t normally do cover versions, but Heal the World was everything I wanted to express. It conveys the diversity that Bahrain showcases, and makes me extremely proud of my country. We put our own twist with a rap bit in it, and I think MJ would have approved! The great feedback we got from so many people was unexpected.”

Before the project was complete, there came a harbinger of hope in the form of a donor.

May travelled to Turkey for a liver transplant in the beginning of 2021 to give herself a fighting chance to live.

She considers herself lucky to have a healthy donor and a speedy recuperation. Despite which, her path to recovery was fraught with challenges. “My protein levels fell drastically, which led to Oedema. My stomach was so bloated with fluid, that my lungs were affected and my surgery scar was starting to open up,” May recalls. “They cut a hole in my torso to drain the fluid, and of all the difficult times, this was when I broke down and cried.” But through it all, she continued collaborating with her Heal the World team back in Bahrain.

May’s rock amid her ordeal was her mother.

“My mom is my hero; truly inspirational. I’ve

never seen a stronger woman in my life,” says May. Which is why her brand new single, 7amdillah (a stylised version of ‘alhumdulillah’), with local artist Xenai, starts with a monologue to her mother, and ends with words of gratitude to family and friends. “This single is my comeback. It is a catchy, eclectic fusion between the Western and Arabian world, with Ali Bongo’s tabla on this track. It captures our raw personalities; we have retained some candid moments of the recording that lend a fun element to it. We hope that listeners feel happy, soothed, blessed, encouraged and strong by this powerful song.”

With the right regimen, May has risen above her challenge and is raring to go. “Besides positive thinking, music gave me the will to survive the dramatic impact that the surgery had. I went through PTSD, and I let out all those emotions and pain into my music, it’s just something I bounce off. The surgery cut through my diaphragm muscles, which I needed to strengthen to sing again. I’m happy to get back my normal vocal range.

“I am planning another music video collaboration with big artists. This time it will be an original song and I’m so excited to get started. My purpose is to do more for others now, to give back. This industry has given me so much and I’ve become a full-fledged musician despite being a Bahraini female. With my network and know-how, I will be mentoring, training and producing songs for budding artists to help them succeed,” she reveals.

When May first approached me with the idea it instantly felt like the right thing to do and I immediately started thinking about my contribution to the song, as it represented a whole movement that we are trying to implement helping the world bit by bit towards a better future. This time by a song, next an event and so on. Working alongside fellow artists, sound engineer and the videography team has been an honour and a chance to share ideas and experiences. I encourage and hope to see more collaborations as I believe we truly rise when we come together and work alongside each other.

Working on the Heal the World project was an absolute privilege and blessing. I am flattered and humbled to be part of such a diverse and immensely talented group of artists! When I was approached with the idea, I fell in love with it instantly! To cover such a memorable song by such an icon and legend such as Michael Jackson, a personal idol of mine that I used to watch and mimic almost daily on VHS is something I never thought I would ever do. I can write thousands of words and still won’t be enough to express how proud and grateful I am being part of this project, and I hope that the message resonates and strikes the hearts and souls of everyone who listens to and watches it.

Bill Grieve discovers the adrenaline-pumping world of wind watersports in the Kingdom

“When it comes to wind-based watersports, position is nothing - performance is everything!”

Bahrain and the surrounding islands have a number of coastal beaches, bays and areas that are perfect for wind-based watersports, like windsurfing and kite surfing. Most of these spots are only ideal under certain conditions or at certain times and a number are in isolated areas or secluded from the general public eye.

BTM ventured out to Nurana Islands, just one of the many ideal wind watersport locations to meet up with, watch and speak to a group of enthusiasts who are a small part of the family of the wind watersport wizards of Bahrain.

The group we met was made up of people of all ages and backgrounds: bankers, IT specialists, commercial pilots, architects, consultants, real estate advisors and even a Typhoon fighter pilot. They all have one thing in common - a yearning zest for the adrenaline that wind watersports offer.

Richard Stephens, a well-known figure on the water, explained that a session generally starts with the early message from one of the group members, that simply shows, what might be good wind and conditions for wind watersports.

This quickly develops into an impromptu session away from work, a hurried meeting or conference call and an ultimate aim to get onto the water as soon as possible and enjoy the wind while it lasts.

The bay at Nurana islands, with Manama picturesquely silhouetting the background and skyline is perfect for these activities. With its warm, flat shallow waters and a bit of wind, the sky comes alive with the brightly coloured kites and windsurfer sails and the air is filled with the slapping sound of material as the boards and kites zoom past.

The group work together helping each other, supporting one another, and with the almost practiced ease of circus trapeze artists, gear is offloaded and assembled, and then the water becomes a stage filled with

vibrant colours, fast moving boards, sails and kites and everyone does their own thing. These are careful and very safety conscious actors on this liquid stage, and very carefully the scenes are played out with surfers swishing and swooshing past each other at what from a distance appears to be perilously close, but in reality a safe distance, allowing room for maneuvering and acrobatics that each sport has its own particular type of.

Depending on the wind strength and your mood you can do almost anything on the water” Richard Stephens From an outside perspective it is amazing to watch how practice leads to perfection and how this group make everything they do look so easy. Ulli and Stephen come hurtling past at speed on their new “Foils” which lift their conventional kite surfing boards about a meter out of the water and as they come past sitting nonchalantly on the boards, legs hanging loosely over the edge almost in the water, they look as relaxed as though they were sitting on deck chairs at a BBQ. Davide , Don Bradley, Ash and the others sail past on their windsurfers making it look “just oh-so-easy” but trust me on this - it takes a lot of practice and time on the water as well as some good guidance and lessons to get as far as they are. This is a great day out, good fun and the camaraderie amongst these water sport knights is tremendous.

Every now and then there is a splash, and someone is in the water, but it doesn’t take long before the board is slicing through the water again and the sails or kites are whizzing past making an exhilarating sound that only those in the know fully appreciate.

“It’s just a question of practicing, learning and doing better each time you go out” The Bahrain fraternity of wind-driven watersport enthusiasts is quite small, but there are some outstanding participants with some extraordinary talents and on any reasonably windy day it pays to pack a picnic lunch, get the folding chairs and umbrella and head out to Nurana, or any of the awesome wind watersport spots, and watch how exciting these sports can be. Even as a spectator it’s enthralling, exciting and exhilarating to see, and a viewer might quickly find themselves embraced and welcomed, so much so that they pick up the sport and give it a try.

There is a lot of positive energy in this sport and lots of fun to be had, and it is easy to get carried away in the thrills and spills and pulled into this sport by the spontaneous desire to feel the adrenaline rush - but be cautioned these are sports that take practice, commitment, tenacity , endurance and drive, not to mention a lot of energy.

If you want to get involved, remember - talk to the knowledgeable experienced surfers, and inquire politely if you do want to participate Questions cost nothing, mistakes cost money.

Almost all the surfers will tell you what they did wrong and how to avoid the pitfalls.

Taniya Waghnani and Ravi Varia’s Wedding

The wedding celebration of Taniya, daughter of Rajkumar and Sudha Waghnani, and Ravi, son of Sharad and Jayshree Varia was an intimate two-day affair. The Mehendi ceremony was held at the Waghnani residence on April 29 while the wedding took place the following day at the Budaiya Gurudwara with limited family members. This was followed by a reception lunch for family members at Al Areen Resort & Spa and dinner for the bride and groom’s close friends at the same venue.

Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Bahrain, Margaret Nardi, has witnessed some trailblazing developments in relations between Bahrain and her country since her time on the island. She shares deeper insights on current US-Bahrain ties with BTM. Could you highlight the current status of trade relations between Bahrain and the US? Are there any developments in the pipeline to further strengthen the commercial relationship between USA & Bahrain?

Economic development and strengthening commercial relations are among our top priorities. Since the 2006 Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Bahrain, trade has tripled from USD780 million to USD2.5 billion. We continue to look for more opportunities to bring U.S. investment here.

We have highlighted what U.S. companies in Bahrain are doing to help Bahrain operate through the pandemic. For example, textile manufacturer, WestPoint Homes, has converted their production capacity to include making face masks. Some of them were donated to the Bahraini government, and others exported to the UK, U.S., and other markets. The company saw this as an opportunity to expand their business into the hospital and medical market. U.S. technologies, like Cisco, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services are being used here in schools, the embassy, and by the Bahraini government.

With the new U.S. administration’s focus on the environment, we’re hoping to work with Bahrain on sustainable energy developments as well. U.S. companies are involved in a lot of the major infrastructure projects whether it’s the design work for the new causeway to Saudi Arabia, baggage screening at the new airport, or in telecommunications. Besides this, we try to expand in newer areas as well, and see if there are opportunities for U.S. businesses working with the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the FTA between Bahrain and USA. What do you see as being the key benefits of this agreement for both parties and can you tell us a little bit about the untapped opportunities for further growth under the FTA? Well, I think that flow of two-way trade of industrial and consumer products without tariffs is definitely the main benefit for Bahrainis and for American companies. For the United States, having access to the broader GCC market is also an advantage as far as what more can be done.

of the FTA or what its benefits are. So, we’re trying to do business outreach programs for them. We did a week-long series for women entrepreneurs to explain what the FTA means, the benefits of the FTA, and to answer any questions they had to help get them started.

The Embassy also sponsored a contest with FinTech Bay for entrepreneurs to develop new apps. The winner received seed funding and training to support their business development.

How will the end of the pandemic affect business and trade between the two nations?

The pandemic hasn’t had a huge negative impact on business and trade between the U.S. and Bahrain because a number of the client companies that are here are in areas that were actually in greater need during the pandemic. I would say access to resources was one of the limitations, but I don’t think that there was a significant negative impact on U.S. companies.

Also, the Embassy is now issuing multiple entry 10-year business/tourist visas to Bahrainis, and these things are going to help stimulate business further.

Are there any, or likely to be any high-level delegations or VIP visits from the States to Bahrain or vice-versa that are planned at present?

In my view, visits here are the best way for officials in Washington to understand Bahrain.

From September last year to January 2021, we had high-level visits almost every week, following the signing of the normalization agreement between Bahrain and Israel. We are hoping to start receiving visitors after the easing of travel restrictions. Right now, travel from the State Department is limited..

However, we expect a robust U.S. delegation to attend the Manama Dialogue, as we have seen every year since the Manama Dialogue started in 2004. It is our goal to attract participants from both the legislative as well as the executive branch.

Vaccine development and distribution has become priority in the global flight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The US-manufactured vaccine, Pfizer, proved to be quite popular among Bahrain’s citizens when choosing a vaccine. What are your thoughts on this?

The U.S. joined the international Covax scheme with a goal to donate $2 billion to vaccinate 30 percent of the eligible population in every member country. We have been encouraging Bahrain and our other partners to also contribute to Covax. The U.S. is now starting to donate some of its extra vaccines to different countries that are in dire need. We have been very impressed by Bahrain’s effort from the beginning to tackle the pandemic, and have been making efforts to support the government’s efforts to expedite the deliveries of the Pfizer vaccine.

His Royal Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa has had remarkable foresight. Where else do you have four different vaccines to choose from? Some of us at the embassy, including myself, got our vaccines from the Ministry of Health earlier on and we’re very grateful for that.

Since you have served both the present and former administrations during your term here, have you experienced any dichotomy of interest from the two State Departments with regard to your dealings with the Government of Bahrain?

The Biden Administration immediately rejoined the WHO and rejoined The Paris Agreement for climate change. All of those things also impacted us here in Bahrain. There has been more focus on supporting sustainable energy or environmentally sound efforts in the countries where we live. There continues to be a strong focus on human rights and that’s an area where we already have very good engagement with the government. The United States is also seeking election to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2022-2024 term.

What has been your most memorable engagement as US Chargé d’Affaires and why?

The past year was a memorable one for the U.S., Bahrain, and indeed the whole world. I will never forget working with my staff, and our Embassy community, to deal with the COVID pandemic, while also handling visits of the U.S. Secretaries of State, Defense, and Treasury to mark Bahrain’s normalization with Israel and the signature of the Abraham Accords. I am so proud to have led such an impressive Embassy team at such a historic moment!

As president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham Bahrain) since 2013, Qays Zu’bi answers some pertinent questions put forth by Behnaz Sanjana, touching upon US-Bahrain relations and the association’s raison d’être.

What brought about the establishment of AmCham and what are its objectives?

The American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham Bahrain) was formed in 2006 as an independent, non-profit, non-political business association with a charter to capitalise on the newly implemented Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the US and Bahrain. Its purpose was to help companies take advantage of the new markets and benefits that emanated from this important agreement.

AmCham’s objectives include promoting commerce, investment and goodwill between the US and Bahrain, providing a forum in which business executives with American interests may identify, discuss, and pursue common interests, to heighten awareness of Bahrain’s strategic location, business-friendly laws, and commercial role in the Middle East, and increase bilateral US-Bahrain trade and business opportunities.

AmCham Bahrain is the official affiliate of the US Chamber of Commerce and part of the global network of more than 120 American Chambers of Commerce to foster collaboration amongst the members and greater business opportunities between the US and the Gulf region. Through these affiliations, AmCham helps its members succeed by providing a wide range of networking and information sharing opportunities, B2B introductions, government advocacy, valuable business intelligence, and customised business support services.

How has the FTA bolstered existing ties between Bahrain and the US and how has it helped new ones to evolve?

As you may know, the US and Bahrain have enjoyed an economic relationship for over 120 years and the FTA has certainly made it even stronger. Bilateral trade of goods and services have more than tripled since the FTA went to effect and we have all expectations that this will continue to grow once the world economies recover from the impact of Covid-19.

It is significant to note that the US has negotiated FTAs with only 20 countries worldwide. The FTA is clearly a sign of the US government’s faith in the strength and transparency of Bahrain’s economy. From a larger perspective, this vote of confidence in Bahrain attracts investment into Bahrain by companies that may not even plan to trade with the US. The FTA is here to stay. What are some of the most notable benefits of the FTA in Bahrain?

The FTA offers significant benefits that increase the competitiveness of a company’s exports/imports between the US and Bahrain.

One hundred percent of bilateral trade in consumer, industrial, and agricultural products are tariff free. Both countries have accorded substantial market access across their entire services sector. They provide strong protection and enforcement for copyright, patent, and trademark owners as well as intellectual property protection in the digital environment, supporting electronic media and internet service providers.

Under the Agreement, both Bahrain and the US must publish their laws and regulations governing trade. Both countries also have committed, to the extent possible, to publish proposed regulations in advance in order an provide an opportunity for public comment prior to implementation.

The Agreement required both countries to take measures to increase transparency and efficiency in customs administration, including publication of laws and regulations on the Internet and procedural certainty and fairness.

All these benefits create a ripe environment for promoting bilateral trade and investment.

There still remains great potential for expanding bilateral trade and investment.

We will continue to develop our resources to help companies use the FTA and find a path into the US or Bahrain market. We will also help companies better understand the tools available through the US Export Import Bank (EXIM) to help them compete in the international market. Listening to our members and finding innovative ways to support their success will always be a priority. We hope to bring back our charity golf tournament and US alumni reception later this year.

Having joined the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham Bahrain) in 2013, Mary McGinnis has a highly significant role as she directs all AmCham departments including membership, advocacy, sponsorship and consultancy services. With over 20 years of experience in the non-profit sector, she has successfully utilised her past experience to facilitate the growth of member companies in Bahrain.

THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN AMCHAM MEMBER AmCham Bahrain has been in existence since 2006 when the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United States came into effect for the purpose of helping businesses in Bahrain make use of the FTA. “AmCham does that in various ways we create a platform for business leaders to come together, network, share knowledge, learn and have access to resources,” explains Ms. McGinnis.

There are currently around 200 AmCham members which includes iconic global Fortune 500 companies, SMEs, non-profits and individual entrepreneurs. “We’re certainly the most active business association dedicated to relations between Bahrain and the US,” she says.

Around 30 AmCham Bahrain events, which are instrumental for networking and knowledge sharing, and often feature highlyexperienced topic speakers, are held every year. “We’ve collaborated with regional AmChams, during COVID, and had 75 virtual events which gives our members a rich opportunity to choose from a range of topics and experts in the GCC, MENA region and the United States,” says Ms. McGinnis.

AmCham also provides members with advocacy services when faced with local or international issues which affect their business. “We go to the right body of people who can help resolve that, whether that’s in Washington DC or in Bahrain,” she explains, adding that the organisation then links members to resources which can open doors.

“We also do introductions, certainly within our membership and other AmChams, and with companies in the United States. So, if a member is trying to expand their business that’s something we help them with – finding a partner,” she adds. www.bahrainthismonth.com

“HOW CAN I USE THE FTA?” “It’s one of the most common questions we get, and it really depends on what the business is,” she says.

Consultancy services at AmCham are instrumental for companies that are trying to determine their eligibility. “People believe if they could crack the secret of the FTA, their business would expand easily, but expanding your business, with or without the FTA, is challenging,” she explains, adding that businesses must understand the market, rules and regulations, and supply chain of the country they wish to expand to.

“The FTA doesn’t make any of that, any easier; what it does is make it more competitive by taking away all tariffs for 98% of all goods and services that are created in Bahrain or in the US for bilateral trade,” she explains.

In order to be eligible for the FTA, 35% of the good’s value has to be created either in the US or Bahrain. “This is because the purpose of the FTA is to help local economies through the creation of jobs and more. Since Bahrain doesn’t have a lot of natural resources, the 35% is often created through the labour of putting things together and transforming them into something new and unique. So, we help companies figure out whether their goods meet the requirements,” she says.

Companies also have to be established in Bahrain and follow the requirements for exporting to the US to make use of the FTA. “An undersold aspect of the FTA opportunity in Bahrain is that companies from all over the world could come and set up here to manufacture and ship to the United States.

Given its business-friendly environment, low cost of living and other advantages, Bahrain is an ideal location to reach the MENA and Asia market,” she says.

THE GROWTH OF AMCHAM In 2013, AmCham’s membership was below 50 members and has now grown to over 200. The organisation has grown during the pandemic, and has attracted a good number of global and local companies. “I think businesses realised that belonging to a group that can help promote them, raise their visibility and connect them to clients and resources is a good investment,” she says.

THE ROLE OF PAST EXPERIENCE Ms. McGinnis has travelled and worked in countries including India, Thailand, Italy and more and offers a cross-cultural perspective to her work. “Since Bahrain is so multicultural, as is AmCham, it allows me to connect, appreciate and support our members in an even better way.

This is not only because I may have a story to tell of an experience in their country, but from a perspective of understanding how they may see the world in a different way - their perceptions and practices may be a little bit different. So, I can adapt my communication and what I’m offering to support that,” she explains.

She also had the opportunity to live and work in different parts of the United States including San Francisco, New York, Boston, Washington, and Alabama. “That has further helped me have a better sense of the cultures and markets business-wise to help our reach into the United States for our members,” she says.

A VERY SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCE WITH AMCHAM Having been with AmCham for eight years, Ms. McGinnis has had several memorable experiences within the organisation. “I was very honoured to plan and lead the trade mission for the Minister of Oil and Gas back to Houston, Texas and Washington DC two years ago, soon after the new oil and gas fields were found. The Bahrain government is very interested in using US technology and expertise in developing those fields, so we met with the industry leaders in Houston,” she says.

THE LAST WORD In the last five years, AmCham Bahrain has grown its network of affiliations and is now a member of over 120 AmChams across the world, including the GCC and MENA AmChams. “I’d like to encourage people to attend our events, talk to me about membership and how we could specifically support their business,” she says.

“We are also a part of the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC, which is the world’s largest business chamber with over three and a half million members. The Path to the Land of Opportunity American University of Bahrain Provost, Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, talks about the benefits students in the region can enjoy through the university’s stateside partnership.

The American University of Bahrain (AUBH) has formed a partnership with California State University, Northridge (CSUN), which is sure to not enhance the higher education sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain, but also create a pathway to the US for its students.

CSUN is part of the 23-campus California State University system, which is the largest in the United States with nearly 500,000 students and more than 50,000 faculty and staff. “We are proud to be pursuing an academic partnership with CSUN (subject to final approval from the HEC) which is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and a number of field-specific accreditors,” says American University of Bahrain, Provost, Dr. Jeff Zabudsky.

“This pioneering partnership in the making aims to connect students based in the Middle East and North Africa to the largest university system in the United States, effectively paving a seamless pathway to the U.S. for those aspiring to access a more flexible international experience,” he adds.

Located in Los Angeles, CSUN is one of the largest universities in the United States enrolling nearly 40,000 full- and part-time students in Fall 2020. A Century of Trade

Mr. Ahmed Yateem

Ahmed Yateem, the Managing Director of Yateem Airconditioning is one of the emerging brood of prominent young family business owners reflecting with pride upon his family’s business and personal relationships with the United States. “A legacy that started a century ago by his late grandfather Mr. Hussein Yateem continues to develop in the 21st century” says Mr. Yateem highlighting the A.M. Yateem Brothers- an epitome of Arabian Trade Philosophy & culture which follows the motto of “Simplicity and honesty in Business”.

As we sat down over coffee in the Yateem Airconditioning office in Manama along with their COO, Mr. Mazin Zaidan, Mr. Yateem had prepared evidence in the form of newspaper cuttings and old advertisements documenting his grandfather and great-grandfather’s strident efforts to bring the best from America to serve Bahrain’s communities. As a young 28-year-old ambitious businessman, Mr. Hussein Yateem always had an eye for the best quality and highest form of customer service.

According to one article in the New York Times, on 4th August 1939, Mr. Hussein Yateem, Mr. Ahmed’s late grandfather visited the United States for the first time in 1939 accompanying Sheikh Mohammed bin Isa al Khalifa to attend the World Fair. A visit that opened up a sea of opportunities. It was during this visit that he met another fellow businessman turned friend, the founder of Carrier, Dr. Willis Carrier. A friendship that blossomed into a strong relationship between Bahrain and the United States, most importantly favouring the future of business developments in Bahrain. In an era where air conditioning was relatively new, at the fair Mr. Hussein was mesmerised by a large revolving globe showing visitors how air conditioning was used all over the world- from the Arctic circle to the equator. and the “Northern Lights” glowing from its ceiling they explained the system that had the power to change climates. As a quick observer Mr. Hussein immediately spotted the potential for the Middle East region.

By 1985, Mr. Hussain Yateem was one of the few people who had known and interacted with Dr. Willis the founder of Carrier. Hence, the then Carrier president, Mr. Geraud Darnis, in 2010 flew all the way on his private jet to Bahrain specifically to meet him.

With the long history of trading with the USA, the A.M. Yateem Brothers contributed in developing the island’s business structure in numerous fields. In 1923, Mr. Ahmed’s late great grandfather Mr. Willis Carrier Ali Ahmed Yateem was the importer of General Motor vehicles and later Mr. Hussein Yateem imported Studebaker vehicles in the 1940’s. In an article in the South bend Tribune, Mr. Hussain, a man with a quick wit, joked that Studebaker vehicles don’t wear out, only to ensure that the vehicles were so reliable and long-lasting, that there was never any need to replace them. In the same article, Mr. Hussein, master of diplomacy, was also quoted saying that, “President Roosevelt is the most charming man I have ever met.”

Adding to his established business of a movie theatre, concession for L&M tobacco, operation of distilled water, ice plants, gasoline and kerosene, Yateem became the official distributor for Carrier in 1946. This was followed by another major landmark in 1981 with the opening of the Yateem Center, which was the very first airconditioned shopping centre in the region; using Carrier technology, located next to Bab Al Bahrain. The first ice plant was introduced into Bahrain using Carrier Brunswick technology and was importing US manufactured appliances including refrigerators in the 1950s. These developments became popular with the island residents. A large population purchased air conditioners for their homes to “beat the heat” while weekends were spent visiting the Yateem center with family and friends – the results of a visionary Bahraini businessman with unmatched foresight. www.bahrainthismonth.com

A HISTORY IN HEALTHCARE

Corporate CEO and Chief Medical Officer at American Mission Hospital (AMH), Dr. George Cheriyan takes Farah Baig on a journey through the hospital’s illustrious history, plans for growth and drive to remain one of the most advanced healthcare providers in the Kingdom.

The American Mission Hospital has a long-standing history in Bahrain’s healthcare sector. Could you highlight the relationship that Bahrain and the US have through the hospital?

Our hospital has played a critical role in US-Bahrain relations. In 1892, a man from New Jersey, Dr. Samuel Zwemer, sowed the first seeds of modern healthcare in Bahrain on his arrival. Following his continuous requests, Dr. Sharon J Thoms and his wife, Dr. Marion Wells Thoms, who should rightly be called ‘the first modern physicians of Bahrain’ were sent by the Arabian Mission in 1900.

The then Hakim of Bahrain, Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, the great-great grandfather of our current ruler His Majesty King Hamad, helped them purchase land officially following which they constructed the Mason Memorial Hospital.

We must always remember that long before Bahrain found oil in 1932, and long before US naval forces stationed their fifth fleet here in the 1970s, Americans were coming and serving in this country, and it was through this historic hospital. Many have lost their lives to diseases contracted here, and died in the line of duty. In a way, American doctors and nurses had set a base for establishing an effective healthcare system, not only in Bahrain, but also across the region we now know as the GCC. In the early 1900s, many AMH healthcare workers had died treating patients of cholera, 26 July 2021

typhoid and various epidemics that hit Bahrain during those times.

Are there any collaborations with medical associations in the US and otherwise in the pipeline?

Will there be any exchange of medical expertise?

We will be having collaborations with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), which is the second largest children’s hospital in the US. We are also looking at a partnership with the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, which can provide tertiary level consultation services.

Tell us about the hospital’s recent US accreditation.

In May, we became the first private hospital in Bahrain to win a College of American Pathologists (CAP) Accreditation – an

accreditation that medical labs around the world aim to achieve.

CAP evaluates and certifies best practices in pathology and laboratory medicine. Our lab worked hard to ensure our quality systems are all in place to earn this coveted accreditation.

How does the hospital remain one of the most advanced and stateof-the-art facilities on the island?

We have always been quick to embrace new medical technologies and their applications in healthcare. It might interest your readers to know that in 1940s, the first X-ray machine in all of the Arabian Gulf was brought by the American Mission Hospital, Bahrain. It was only 10 years later, when government healthcare facilities were becoming more robust, that the Naim Hospital acquired one.

Could you tell our readers about the latest expansion in A’Ali? The King Hamad American Mission Hospital in A’Ali is a USD70 million, 775,000-squarefoot hospital. It will include an eight-bed intensive care unit (ICUs), 17-bed neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), outpatient unit, 20-bed urgent care unit, sixbed labour/delivery/recovery unit, and five modular operating rooms.

The new hospital will open in October 2022 and is going to be a teaching hospital, with some parts built specifically for this purpose.

This eco-friendly, solar-run project will also include underground parking for 500 cars, a 129,000-square-foot staff accommodation building, and landscaped garden area.

How has the hospital been instrumental in the Kingdom’s fight against COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic?

We had to be innovative and agile. We leveraged technology to provide virtual consultations, adapted to the pandemic quickly and set up a Covid-19 Task Force within the hospital.

Sadly, our team member Dr. Solomon became the first physician in Bahrain to die of Covid-19 in June 2020. He must’ve contracted it while treating patients in Zwemer Clinic. And, as I had mentioned in the beginning, he is now counted among the many physicians of AMH who lost their lives in the line of duty. www.bahrainthismonth.com

and expects to develop these further very soon. “We have seen consistent growth throughout the past five years, with the exception of 2020 for obvious reasons,” says José, “and we look forward to reaching even greater heights in the near future.”

As well as their US products, Trans Arabia are also the Food Service agents for Dilmah Ceylon Tea, Giffard Syrups, Sauces and Fruit Purees, Chai Lattes; Matcha Green Tea mixers and powders as well as Master of Mixers. With large-scale supply contracts not only to major hotels and restaurants but also to large corporate entities including the national airline, Gulf Air, Trans Arabia has come a long way in one decade of business and now looks to regional expansion as the next logical progression.

“Throughout the region, we take the orders, manage financial transactions, coordinate with our distributors, and then ship directly from US to the various countries where we have appointed distributors,” he says.

“Also, in 2018, we set up production facilities for a new branch of our operation; Veggietalis W.L.L., which specialises in processing fresh cut

vegetables packaged in vacuum”, says José.

“We expanded once again in 2020, to produce frozen french fries in standard and customized sizes, cubes and wedges,” he adds.

Veggietalis as the first frozen french fries factory in Bahrain, supplies a large number of hotels, cafes and restaurants delivering an outstanding product to Trans Arabia’s Food Service clients. The company acts as the marketing arm of Veggietalis, distributing all frozen product lines via their temperature-controlled vehicles; made up of a fleet of eight delivery vehicles, just for the Bahrain market.

“As part of our expansion strategy, we are currently developing efforts to create a retail distribution project with some of Bahrain’s Class A supermarkets and Hypermarkets to further develop our local presence in Bahrain while, at the same time, securing additional retail brands,” says José.

“At Trans Arabia/Veggietalis, we pride ourselves on supplying premium quality brands and providing our customers with outstanding after sales service, presentations and demonstrations,

sharing product know-how and food preparation techniques. It is this passion for detail and obsession with quality that makes us such a successful operation with a totally satisfied client base exceeding 800 clients at present,” he says.

José is extremely up beat regarding the FTA agreement and the benefits it has provided his company within recent years.

“The FTA has given us a big advantage in terms of the absence of import duties on the US products that we import. Our brands are very well known and quality is guaranteed and consistent with every shipment. It is indeed a pleasure doing business with the United States”.

He continues, “We are always looking for new opportunities in established product lines and with new technologies entering the food manufacturing industry in particular, we are truly excited about the immediate possibilities; dealing in truly healthy alternatives for confectionery, ice cream and fat calorie reduction products and services. he 13th edition of the Bahrain Summer Festival will be held remotely in the month of July, stated the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA).

The slate of activities was revealed during a conference attended by BACA president Her Excellency Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Director General of Culture and Arts at BACA Her Excellency Shaikha Hala bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, as well as several foreign ambassadors, representatives of diplomatic organisations, festival partners and media members.

The full schedule of the Bahrain Summer Festival, which is set to run from July 1-31 as part of BACA’s larger year-long Pearling Path cultural programme, can be accessed on BACA’s website (culture.gov.bh). The public can stay up to date on all the latest happenings surrounding the festival via its dedicated social media channels (@Nakhoolbah), including broadcasts of all live events on YouTube.

Dick Potter explores the contributions of the US to the motoring industry.

T

he American contribution to the motoring industry, we may all concede, cannot be said to be too shabby at all. After the Great Depression and World War II, almost threequarters of all cars produced worldwide were made in the US. After this prolific start, America›s automotive industry grew rapidly and soon evolved into the largest in the world.

The USA held that rank for decades- only being overtaken by Japan in the 1980s.

Henry Ford - a name synonymous with American cars - designed his first moving assembly line in 1913 and revolutionised the manufacturing process of his Ford Model T. consider it a testimony to Fords exemplary workmanship. Not surprisingly then, Ford is one of the two most popular iconic cars in America today, namely the Ford Mustang model. The Chevrolet Corvette, unsurprisingly, is the second of the two most popular and iconic.

One cannot however think of American vehicles without the image of the ubiquitous pick-up popping up. I wasn’t aware that the Ford F-150 pick-up has been the best-selling truck (and vehicle) in the United States for more than 40 years. I was also unaware that the very first Chevrolet (Chevy) pickup truck from 1918 came without a bed, and buyers had to install their own. Thankfully, today›s Chevrolets don’t require such motoring mastery. The Ram name only showed up on a pickup truck in 1981- technically then, making the Ram 1500 a millennial. There are four states where the Ram series (1500/2500/3500) are the most popular pick-ups: Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona and Arkansas.

General Motors Cadillac Escalade is a very lovely SUV that I have had the pleasure of driving for quite some time in Bahrain. Essentially, the Escalades aesthetics were similar to the GMC Yukon Denali and

actually the Escalade›s underpinnings were borrowed from the Denali line, with the GMC logos on the centre caps replaced with Cadillac›s crest. I particularly liked that the only standard colours the Escalade were available in were, Silver Sand, Sable Black, Aspen White and Bordeaux Red Pearl-and what other colours would you need for an SUV anyway? To my mind, the Escalade is America’s version of the UK’s Range Rover- in terms of its use as a means of ferrying around Celebrities and a Bodyguard type of vehicle!

On the topic of ‘Celebrities’, many of us dream of just seeing some of the vehicles that Hollywood’s most successful stars drive on a daily basis. However, it may come as a surprise that the Tesla Model S remains the most popular among some of the world’s richest and most famous people. Tesla continues to attest to the remarkable American contribution to the automobile industry and is an American car that I’m still waiting-with great anticipation-to drive if not own in the not-toodistant future.

The Bacalar spearheads a return to coachbuilding by Bentley Mulliner and features an enhanced version of Bentley’s peerless 6.0-litre, W12 TSI engine, the most advanced 12-cylinder engine in the world. Since the first introduction of the twin-turbocharger W12 in 2003, the refinement of the engine has seen an increase of up to 27 per cent in power, 38 per cent in torque and a reduction of 28 per cent in emissions.

Each W12 engine is hand-built over 6.5 hours by a team of 45 craftspeople before undertaking a highly sophisticated test regime of over an hour via three specialist diagnostic machines during the engines assemble.

A Serious Business Business Expert, Pria Masson Tanwar, explores the lucrative business opportunities presented by the growth of social media.

s an early Millennial (“Xennial” is the term apparently), I studied and worked in a world where social media was in very nascent stages. It is a concept that I find completely fascinating, both for its expanse and its ability to be a cohesive system while being so apparently unstructured. When I decided to research this relatively new industry, I was in for a bit of a surprise and a wonderfully educative experience.

Social media essentially comprises of three key elements – the platform, the users of that platform and the brands that want to advertise or sell on that platform. Everyone earns within this ecosystem based on how these elements interact with each other.

Broadly, platforms could be social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), media networks (Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest), Blogging Networks (Medium, Tumblr), Discussion Forums (Reddit, Quora) or Review platforms (Yelp).

Based on the nature of the platform, the advertising potential and stickiness of the actual product (blog, picture, video, post etc), the revenue model is developed. Usually, when a threshold of followers and a certain level of sustained interaction is achieved, a user becomes an “employee” i.e. they can then earn from these platforms. The users are responsible for content creation in most cases – which as the user becomes an “influencer” is governed by the requirements of the advertisers. The minimum user threshold to cross over to influencer is not as high as one would think.

The mixes are soft and lush, with vocal harmonies, keyboards and effects plastered over the submerged guitars, a sound that’s painterly yet pop. It suits Phair’s songs, which are pointed and poignant, alternating sketches with stories. The appealing thing about Soberish is how it holds two thoughts simultaneously, a record that revives the spirit of Phair’s earliest albums while casually leaning into her middle age.

Gibbons said: “I think we’re going to call it Hardware, and that’s in tribute to Joe Hardy, our stalwart engineer for four decades.

This is a straight-ahead rock & roll album in the vein of ZZ Top, a record filled with originals that feel familiar, as they’re built of the same components Gibbons has relied upon for decades: fuzztone guitars, thick swing and burly boogie, sly jokes and growled vocals. What makes Hardware cook are the very elements that always work for Gibbons: deceptively sharp songwriting that supports full-throttle rockers and soulful, slower grooves. It’s a formula that’s yielded great results for Gibbons throughout the years, and they do once again here.

Reflection The album’s coolest, most refreshing track is ‘Running Like That,’ a Jessy Lanza-like R&B tune with Eden Samara’s sweetly nudging vocals floating over busy beats that seem slightly apprehensive. This mixture of confidence and nervousness is present throughout James’ music, and it’s part of what makes it so honest and relatable. Reflection doesn’t quite have the shock of the new that her debut For You and I did, but its best moments are still powerful, and it would be impossible to mistake the album for anyone else’s perspective.

British Sea Power

Disco Elysium In some respects, Disco Elysium recalls the 1990s efforts to fuse indie rock experimentalism with the structures and instrumental palette of classical music.

With greater resources at their disposal, British Sea Power have been able to present their score with more full-bodied and exacting orchestration, and there’s rarely a moment where you’re not struck by the intelligence and dour beauty of this music. However, for all the brilliant moments, Disco Elysium doesn’t cohere into a complete musical statement on its own, which stands to reason, since it wasn’t initially intended to be heard separate from the images and sensory input of the video game it was created for.

Wildly Creative We chat with the ever-so-talented Roshni M. Raveendran, about her creative direction, source of inspiration and work as a visual artist.

E

ver since she was a young girl, Roshni M Raveendran has been fascinated by the world of art - often getting lost in tales woven in books, the colourful experience of painting and the playful world of shadows and light with photography.

With a penchant for creativity, she has steadily grown to be a driving force behind some of the most spellbinding imagery that has surfaced in the Kingdom of Bahrain. “I am a classically trained dancer and also have a degree in fashion design,” says Ms. Raveendran, who arrived on the shores of sunny Bahrain in 2017.

Since then, she’s had the opportunity to work in many fashion houses and collaborate with many creatives too. “The services I provide are art direction, set direction, concept creation, wardrobe styling and fashion designing for advertisements and photoshoots,” she explains.

“My work starts with an ‘idea’ – it is either an aesthetic project made for the love of storytelling or a commercial project intended to wow potential customers. The aesthetic pieces are often done in collaboration with local talents, which Bahrain has plenty of,” she adds, with a glint of excitement in her eyes.

Having been involved in artistic productions since she was in college, Roshni’s world naturally veered towards creative direction.

“I have designed and directed fashion shows, assisted professional stylists for magazine shoots, worked with bridal designers and supported advertising agencies,” she says.

“I believe no job is too small or unimportant if it is done well. Thankfully, I have had a lot of people who have mentored me and I have been blessed with nothing but good experiences,” she adds.

With concepts inspired by the inseparable bond of brothers, the Wild West, history and more, Roshni creative story-telling knows no bounds. “This might sound cliché, but I draw inspiration from almost everything. For most of my personal creative projects I take inspiration from nature and my surroundings.

I get inspired by the people around me, some situations, some minute moments or small seemingly insignificant things in life. And if I can convey a story or a message through my projects – I would consider that as a huge achievement,” she explains.

To execute each concept, she works closely with a team to bring a number of creative

elements together. “I am blessed to be able to work with a small group of like-minded, creative and passionate individuals, who have become more family than friends – photographer and art director, Kiran Varghese, model and photographer, Ruby Alva, and model and content writer, Arunita Praharaj. Each of them is equally important and actively involved in the creative process,” she says.

As a visual artist she believes that the greatest challenge is to constantly come up with new and interesting ideas that can be practically executed. “What people see is just 30 per cent of the actual act, but people do not know how hard it is to get this done,” she says.

“My team and I are constantly glued to our phones and computers researching, calling in wardrobe, spending sleepless nights, praying for good weather and running around nonstop. There is so much preparation that is required beforehand,” she adds.

COVID. The market is slow but work is there. Our shoots have to be restricted to essential personnel only – that means we usually have to do our own heavy lifting and maintaining social distancing becomes a bit of a challenge,” she explains.

When it comes to projects in the pipeline, she’s working one one which involves sustainability, pollution and, one of her personal favourites, fabric draping – all rolled into one. “When it comes to projects I don’t have any favourites since each of the past projects have been a very different experience altogether. Every time someone asks me that, I like to think that the most exciting project is the next one I am working on,” she concludes.

WHICH SCHOOL STANDS OUT?

Educator, Julia Knight, tells us how to go about choosing an international school for our children.

nternational education is growing at an ever-increasing pace with the demand for international school placements on the rise for both local and expatriate families, not just in Bahrain, but across the region.

A parental demand for high quality education in the Gulf saw an exponential growth in the sector. “In the last seven years there have been 72 new private schools opened in Dubai - 33 in the last three years” Mark Ryder, Regional Consultant for RSAcademics explains, which is great news for parents in Dubai as it means a greater choice. This is also true for schools in Bahrain with new schools on the island expected to open this academic year and the next.

However, choice can be overwhelming for parents given the myriad of things that need to be compared and contrasted.

Expatriate families are often making other life changing decisions alongside choosing schools. Whilst both: local and expatriate families are looking for value for money, local families are also looking for longevity and schools which reflect local customs and provide community links.

So, what are the top indicators to look for in an international school?

The answers might surprise parents but in research conducted by RSAcademics, 68% of parents cited the school’s ethos and values as very important when choosing an international school. How can parents understand the ethos of a school? Firstly, parents should book a school tour and get a ‘feel’ for the place. If you can talk to the teachers, visit the playground, see the classrooms. During the school tour, you can ask questions about the academics and curriculum, talk to the teachers, visit the playground and see the classrooms – the feel of the school is a big indicator of your child’s happiness.

Another way to find out about the school is by talking to parents, in fact according RSAcademics, 71% relied on recommendations from parents of children at the school they were applying to. If the majority of parents are happy with a school, then this is a good indicator that the school is doing something right. Parents can use local forums on social media to reach out to parents as well the school’s own website and social media posts.

For many parents, the curricular of the school is the first consideration when they begin the

search for a new school. If your child attends a British school then the expectation is that if they move on, they will find it easy to slot back into a British school either in their home or another host country.

This should be true for all international schools. Bahrain has a variety of schools that offer curriculums from France, Canada, the US, India and the UK; expatriate parents should consider how long they might be away from their home country and whether this might impact external examinations such as GCSEs or SATS. Local or long-term resident families might consider where they want their children to study in the futurewhether A levels or IB would be a more suitable pathway to the US, Canada or UK universities and colleges.

Once the curriculum has been selected and the school tour booked, what are the other aspects for parents to consider?

The size of the school is a consideration for many families. In smaller schools and classes, students are usually more confident and competent learners who are able to make significant progress. This is because smaller schools often feel safer for children, they can take risks in small classes where www.womanthismonth.com

OPINION | education friendships are quickly established and across the whole school rather than from just one year group or class.

In UK mainstream, independent schools - the average class size is 16 - this is often attractive to fee paying parents who want a bespoke, boutique style of learning. Smaller schools can build a greater sense of community spirit as teachers, parents and students are able to get to know one another which provides invaluable support to new families arriving.

Larger schools can have benefits too, a larger cohort can present more diversity among the student population and allow for more opportunities for school teams and productions. For teachers, the sweet spot is around 18 - 20 students, poor behaviour and disengagement is far less likely in a smaller class as students are more visible to teachers and peers and tend to be more motivated as they receive more attention from the teacher.

Aside from academics, what should you look for?

Find a balance: some parents will favour sports and the arts over academics, but well-rounded students need a mixture of both to thrive. Look carefully at the school facilities and spaces, ask questions about the number of weekly lessons allocated for drama, art and sport. Find out if the spaces are shared between different sections of the school.

Another crucial question to ask is about the playtimes or break times - where do the children eat, and do they get enough time to run off the energy that learning builds? On average, children in independent schools in the UK have 90 minutes of breaktimes per day - this is an important factor in wellbeing and happiness. International schools often mirror the UK independent school timings - longer hours in the classroom should also include extended time for children to socialise and engage with their peers.

Choosing a school for your child depends on so many factors, but in the end, it really does come down to the simple question of does the school fit your family ethos and values? If it does, then you will know it when you ‘feel’ it.

However, this concept feels like it has been designed for those enjoying life solo, living in their immaculate houses, with their bohemian vibes and colourful auras, and most certainly not for mothers settling for cold coffees, unwashed hair, and an audience in their bathrooms. Mothers around the world know that to have a good day we need to keep those little hands busy as much as we can, and therefore we buy TOYS! Lots of toys, so many of them that sometimes they take over every corner of your home.

Did anyone panic-buy extra toys as soon as this whole lockdown happened? It's completely normal to assume that kids need more toys to entertain them if they're spending all of their time at home, but is that really the case? There are actually some surprising benefits to having fewer toys, and they go far beyond not stepping on Legos every night after bedtime.

Sure, you want to provide an enriching environment for your children, but a little boredom is actually a good thing for kids. Mild boredom, a lack of constant entertainment and novelty, is what inspires creativity. Fewer toys mean kids have to get creative and use their imaginations when they play. And that creative thinking will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

Gratitude comes easy

When kids constantly get new toys, they grow to expect it, and it's understandably difficult for them to truly appreciate new toys, no matter how cool they are. A smaller number of new toys that are of high quality and really targeted to your child's interests are much more likely to be appreciated.

Siblings learn sharing

If you have more than one child, resist the urge to buy two of everything. It's actually a really great lesson when kids have to learn to share, in their own child-led way. When a child has to wait to use the cool ride-on toy in the backyard or negotiate using the action figures together with their sibling, they learn valuable social skills that simply don't come up if there's two of everything.

Toys get taken care of

When there are toys everywhere, kids hardly notice if something breaks. Even if they love the toy, they assume a new one will quickly replace the broken one. If they have fewer toys, they’ll naturally take care of what they have.

More engaged playtime

While kids may truly believe they want all the toys, the truth is most children get overwhelmed by having too much stuff around. Having a huge volume of toys can become a distraction from deep play. Kids wind up going from activity to activity without experiencing true engagement and getting lost in their own play.

A tidier playroom

Many young children actually have a very strong sense of order and get great satisfaction from putting items exactly where they belong. If there are too many toys though, enjoying that sense of order becomes really difficult for kids. They need to have a clear understanding of where each item goes and the level of mess needs to be manageable so it doesn't seem overwhelming.

More outdoor playtime

Keeping fewer toys in the house will naturally lead to kids choosing outdoor play more frequently. They'll spend more time searching for acorns, riding their bikes, splashing in puddles and engaging in pretend play outside—and nothing could be better for them!

More money for experiences

Buying fewer toys, of course, has the obvious benefit of saving money. This may mean you have more funds to spend on family experiences together, your child will notice your focus and will come to value experiences over things as well.

Eid Al Adha is just around the corner, and we couldn’t help thinking about all the delicious food that we get to feast on. The region’s most loved cooking channel, Fatafeat, shared three exciting recipes: a main course and two desserts, that our readers can try this month.

Chocolate Basbousa

Ingredients

950 gms semolina 13 gms baking powder 270 gms coconut flaxes 665 ml corn oil 600 gms sugar 400 gms yogurt eggs 13 60 gms cacao powder 120 gms chocolate chips

Tahini for tray

Flour for tray

Syrup 1 kg 2 liters 10 ml 5 ml 5 ml

Garnish

Almond whole peeled Sugar powder

For the Basbousa dough

1. Mix the semolina, coconut flaxes, cocoa

powder and baking powder together.

2. In a separate bowl, mix the oil with the yoghurt, sugar and eggs.

3. Combine the two mixtures together, then add chocolate chips and pour into the tray after coating it with tahina and flour.

4. Arrange the whole almonds on top of the mixture, then chill the tray for two hours before baking at 190C till done.

For the syrup

In a small casserole add all the syrup ingredients and boil for 20 minutes. Keep the mixture warm.

To serve

1. Cut the Basbousa into small squares or diamonds.

2. Drizzle warm syrup on top of the Basbousa and allow it to cool before serving.

3. Dust powdered sugar on top.

Delicious Baklava Fingers Ingredients:

1 package phyllo sheets ¾ cup roasted unsalted pistachios 1 cup roasted cashews 1 cup ghee, clarified butter

Powdered pistachio, to garnish

For the orange blossom syrup: 2 cups 1 cup 1 tbsp 1 tsp 1

sugar water lemon juice orange blossom water cinnamon stick

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 325F. Line a 13X9 inch baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.

2. In a medium saucepan, add all sugar syrup

ingredients except orange blossom, mix together until sugar has dissolved and let it cook for 10 minutes. Once off heat, add the orange blossom. Set aside to cool.

3. Unfold the phyllo sheets on a large cutting board, cut them half into two equal portions.

4. Stack one portion over the other, and cover it using a damp kitchen towel, to prevent them from drying.

Set aside.

5. Take one phyllo sheet piece and place it on the working surface with the longer side facing you.

Remember to keep the rest of the phyllo sheets covered.

6. Gently brush the phyllo sheet with ghee, then place another phyllo sheet over it and apply ghee on top.

7. Spread about 1 – 1½ Tablespoons of the filling over the sheet.

8. Now roll both sheets together on the rolling pin quite loosely and roll all the way through.

9. Push the rolled phyllo sheets from both sides towards the center of the rolling pin. Then slide it into the prepared baking pan by pushing from one side.

10. Now gently stretch it to fit the baking pan. Repeat the process for rest of the phyllo sheets.

11. Cut the rolled phyllo according to your desired size.

12. Brush ghee over the finished rolls and bake until crisp and golden in color for about 40-50 minutes at 150C. 13. Pour the completely cooled sugar syrup over the baklava pieces and keep it aside for 4-12 hours.

Kofta Tahina

Ingredients

500 gms beef, minced 120 gms onion, chopped 200 gms parsley, chopped 150 gms tomato, chopped 40 gms olive oil 10 gms salt 10 gms all spice 5 gms cardamom 800 gms potato, peeled 400 gms tahina 300 gms lemon juice 10 gms salt 800 ml water 100 gms toasted, sliced almond 50 gms mint leaves 150 gms cauliflower/brocolli

Method 1. Grind the meat, parsley and onions in the

meat grinder/food processor using the finest disk. Alternatively, very finely dice parsley and onion and add them to the minced meat if you bought your meat preminced

2. Add the tomato, olive oil, salt and spices and knead them into the meat mix. Roll into event balls.

3. Bake the kofta in the oven for 20 minutes 4. Fry the sliced potatoes, boil or bake them

My biggest achievement to date is recurring. It’s when people recognise me and my work.
