President’s Letter Good news is always welcome in turbulent times like we’re experiencing. On March 10th, Congress approved a $24 billion NASA budget as part of the $1.5 trillion overall government spending bill. NASA’s portion is about $700 million more than the agency received last year, although it falls $100 million short of what was requested. The increase in NASA’s budget has a widespread trickle-down effect, which is good for large contractors and Mom and Pop businesses alike. BAHEP’s Citizens for Space Exploration will continue their advocacy for a fully funded NASA budget when they make virtual visits with members of Congress on May 16-18. BAHEP continues its support of the aerospace industry through its active involvement with The EDGE Center at the Houston Spaceport, the development of Space Club Texas, and BAHEP’s Commercial Space and Aviation Task Force (CSAT). This newsletter contains details of the progress being made.

Bob Mitchell for BAHEP and its municipal partners. Additionally, Sen. John Cornyn, his staff, and BAHEP have been working together to ensure funding for the Water Resources Development Act of 2022. We’ve also been closely involved with the Coalition for Sustainable Flood Insurance (CSFI) to discuss the implementation of FEMA’s Risk Rating 2.0. The process is extremely complicated, and CSFI is advising Congress to delay implementation until there is greater transparency and public education. BAHEP’s SATOP initiative is having great success through its partnership with Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station and its Capstone Design Program that you can read about on p. 8.
