4. Illness

Illness

The children were playing in the garden. The Master was now eight, His sister Bahíyyih was six, and His little brother Mihdí was four. The Master had not been very well during the past year. The doctors said that He was going to die, and there was no medicine to make Him better.

But one day the Master became well again. The doctors were astonished and did not know how such a thing could have happened.

Many years later, when the Master was quite old, He told some of His friends this story. He said that there is always a reason why things happen. If He had been well He would have been staying in their country house, but because He was so ill He was with His family in their town house at a time when they needed His help. One day some men came and took His Father away. This upset the family and made them feel very worried. But the young Master was able to help His mother by running errands and helping look after His little brother and sister.
