Taking stock of 2023 BAGMA President Peter Heming reflects on the highs and lows within the British agricultural industry in the final months of 2023.

We are in very interesting and challenging times with inflation rises, increased costs of borrowing and lack of confidence in the financial future of the British agricultural industry.

There seems to be an acknowledgement that we are where we are and we need to make the most of it.

BAGMA welcomes two new Corporate Members BAGMA are pleased to announce the addition of GKB Machines and Used4Turf to a growing list of corporate members – helping to build a stronger voice for the wider agricultural and groundcare industries.

BAGMA appoints Hannah Desborough as new team member

The British Agricultural and Garden Machinery Association (BAGMA) are pleased to announce the appointment of Hannah Desborough to the position of Administrator based in our head office in Peterborough.

In this role, Hannah will be focusing on supporting the BAGMA team and helping the organisation to grow.

Hannah brings a wealth of knowledge to the role, with over twelve years of varied customer service experience including over eight years of working in administrative roles within the utilities and education industries.

Hannah said on her appointment “I’ve already been made to feel so welcome and I’m really looking forward to joining the team and helping to support and develop the organisation in these exciting times ahead.”

Outside of work, Hannah enjoys quality time with her family, including going on walks, baking, decorating and DIY.

Jimmy McGhee

BAGMA are saddened to report the recent passing of Jimmy McGhee, Managing Director of Pollock Farm Machinery Ltd. Jimmy was a well a known character both in Ayrshire and in the agricultural industry. He spent his childhood working on farms which sparked a lifelong interest in farm machinery leading him, in 1967, to serve an Agricultural Engineering Apprenticeship in the workshops of A & W Pollock Farm Machinery before moving into the drawing office and then later to a role in sales. In 1998 Jimmy took ownership of the 100 year-old company renaming it Pollock Farm Equipment.

One of Jimmy’s proudest moments was to receive a Gold Innovation Award at the 2022 Royal Highland Show for his Pollock Rope Scraper System.

Following illness in 2020, and on the 53rd anniversary of his service to the business, Jimmy retired leaving the company in the safe hands of his daughter Alison who survives Jimmy, along with his wife Effie.

Time flies with an association to run!

elcome to the November Bulletin.

It is hard to believe that it is nearly the end of 2023.

BAGMA General Manager

In mid-October I was fortunate enough to visit the Climmar Congress in Poland, alongside our President Peter Heming. Founded in 1953, Climmar is an international distributors network, currently comprised of 16 national associations and their member companies in the Agricultural Machinery and Equipment sector. Climmar is the international “melting pot” of ideas from our industry. It sets up working groups in priority areas such as education, which has been looking at how to improve the quality of vocational education and promoting careers to young people.

At the Congress, I was able to hear from other Climmar associations on the issues affecting our industry across Europe.

There were familiar themes such as high

interest rates and dealers struggling to move stock, with some countries reporting sluggish supply chains as well. I was also able to share information about the UK from our survey plus additional information received from some of you. My thanks to those of you who helped with providing this information. I will keep you informed on other Climmar developments throughout the year.

BAGMA, too, remains busy. We have recently held a successful Golf day for members and non-members, which you can read about later in the Bulletin.

We also hosted our Connect meeting at Uttoxeter Racecourse on the 24th October.

We’ll have more on this in the next edition.

I never forget that BAGMA is your association. As ever, we want to hear from you; the good, bad and the unusual so we can either publicise or assist you. Together we remain stronger.

Cornwall Farm Machinery Open Day

R

ichard Jenkins, BAGMA’s Business Development Manager attended BAGMA Member Cornwall Farm Machinery’s recent Open Day at their head office near Truro.

The open day consisted of an impressive site enabling large areas for workshops, covered space for all customers and one of the best retail areas Richard has visited! Ian Dennis, Groundscare Sales Manager of Cornwall Farm Machinery, reported a steady flow of footfall throughout the day, with over 400 people

visiting the Open Day in total.

The day was supported by many of Cornwall Farm Machinery’s franchises including Krone, Amazone and Case with manufacturer representatives on hand to support staff and showcase their exciting machinery portfolios. Stihl provided demonstrations of the latest battery power products, of which many are as powerful as the equivalent petrol machine at very similar price points. The workshop housed many of the Case range and included the rolling road recently

purchased to assist with Tractor/Trailer brake testing. Richard has never seen a tidier workshop!

The day showcased the advantages of hosting an Open Day; the ability to look after current customers, invite potential new ones and provide the opportunity to network without the large show costs.

UK agricultural tractor registrations - October ‘23 Month: 1,007 Units +8.6% change (compared with October 2022) Year to Date: 10,709 Units +4.7% change (compared with JanuaryOctober 2022)

egistrations of agricultural tractors in October were once again above both last year’s level and the recent average for the time of year.

At 1,007 machines, the monthly total was 9% higher than in the same month last year. Indeed, it was the highest number recorded in October since 2016 and was as much as 30% above the five-year average for the time of year.

That brought the total for the year to date to 10,709 - 5% more than in the opening ten months of last year.

That is already higher than the annual total in three of the last eight years, most recently 2020.

Sun, Sand and Smiles at the inaugural BAGMA Golf Day A s the sun shone down on a warm October day in Warwickshire, the BAGMA team and other sporting enthusiasts descended on the Nailcote Hall Par 3 Golf Course for the inaugural BAGMA Golf Day and Dinner.

had retired to the clubhouse, otherwise known as the nineteenth hole, there was time to relax whilst the BAGMA team

totted up the scores to find out who had done well and who had spent the most time in the sand!

The day began in the clubhouse with tea, coffee and bacon rolls to set everyone up for the challenge ahead. Teams were sorted based on handicaps and, with everyone ready in their best golfing gear, the teams were assigned to tee off from specific holes.

At nine-holes, the teams played the Nailcote course twice to create the full eighteen holes. A few lost golf balls and a few well utilised bunkers indicated that many didn’t necessarily find it easier the second time around!

Once all teams had finished play and

BAGMA Training for Business 2024

C

ommitted to providing the absolute best support to our members, BAGMA are pleased to announce the Training for Business programme for 2024. Into their second year, and operated in conjunction with the AEA, the programme has been designed to cover key topics from customer service to recruitment – equipping attendees with additional knowledge and practical techniques to manage and overcome the issues you’ve highlighted as important in your businesses.

For our programme of courses – outlined overpage - we look to ensure that the course content is highly relevant, using trainers who know and understand our industries, and who tailor their training material accordingly.

The challenges of recent years mean we have changed the way we deliver our

training, and for 2024 we are pleased to offer a hybrid programme, combining both virtual and in-person sessions. Our colleagues at the AEA trialled a shorter, virtual training course last year as part of their programme and found it to be well attended. Therefore, we will trial a virtual training course this year on the subject of ‘Customer Service, Raising the Bar’ which will last for approximately two hours.

Our in-person courses take place over one day and can be held in the training room at BAGMA’s Samuelson House office or, alternatively, we are able to offer regional training to suit your needs.

This could either be at your premises or at a regional training centre, subject to numbers and trainer availability.

Anyone involved in outdoor power equipment or land-based industries can enrol on our courses, with a discount

available to BAGMA member companies.

Our courses are recognised by the Institution of Agricultural Engineers for CPD hours, which will be of benefit to many of your employees who will be IAgrE members.

Should I be on all the social media platforms?

W ith so many options out there, it’s hard to know what social media platforms are the right ones for your business. The simple answer is that no, you don’t need to be on all social media platforms as a business.

It is best to put your efforts and time into platforms where your target audience are active and where you can be consistent with your presence.

Start out by defining your goals when it comes to your presence on social media, is it for building relationships and brand awareness and/or to generate leads and direct traffic to your website. Personally, I think a rounded approach to social media is important, ensuring that you are producing content that builds brand awareness and relationships with your audience, but also has a showering of sales-focussed content to help showcase stock and what you offer.

The next and most important factor to consider when you are deciding on your platforms is your access to content and your resources. Do you have the time as a company to put into multiple platforms?

If you begin a TikTok account for example, but you have only posted once in the last 4 weeks, this isn’t the right platform for you. You need to be showing up consistently and engaging with your audience.

Choose the platforms that you think will work for you and start generating your relevant content. There are resources you can use that can help with this, such as social media management tools like Meta Business Suite, Later, Hootsuite where you can create a social media calendar so you have a structure to work to.

There is nothing wrong with not being on all platforms, just find what works for you and do it well.

Fire Safety Regulations Update As of 1st October 2023, new fire safety guidance and amendments to Section 156 of the Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA) of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) have come into force.

These improvements form Phase 3 of the Home Office’s fire safety reform programme, building on Phase 1 (the Fire Safety Act 2021) and Phase 2 (the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022).

What are the key changes?

The changes relate primarily to risk assessments, record keeping, and sharing information related to fire safety.

Key changes introduced by Section 156 of the Building Safety Act 2022 include: 1 Recording Fire Risk Assessment: Responsible Persons must now record their full fire risk assessment findings, replacing the previous requirement for specific findings only. This used to only be required for business with 5 or more staff but now required for all businesses no matter how small.

2 Record Assessor Information: Responsible Persons must document the identity of the individuals or organizations involved in fire risk assessment.

3 Recording Fire Safety Arrangements: Responsible Persons must maintain records of their fire safety measures and arrangements.

4 Contact Information: They should Do these changes apply to me?

These changes impact all non-domestic premises, including workplaces, as well as non-domestic portions of multi-occupied residential buildings (e.g., communal areas), but not individual domestic units.

What are the benefits to the changes?

These changes further strengthen fire safety in all FSO regulated premises by: • Improving cooperation and coordination between Responsible Persons (RPs) • Increasing requirements in relation to the recording and sharing of fire safety information thus creating a continual record throughout a building’s lifespan • Making it easier for enforcement authorities to take action against noncompliance

5 Identify Responsible Persons: Identify other Responsible Persons sharing duties within the same premises and Accountable Persons for higher-risk residential buildings.

7 Competence of Assessors: When appointing a fire risk assessor, they should ensure the assessor is competent, although the specific requirements are forthcoming.

The amendment says that a “competent person” would have “sufficient training and experience or knowledge.” Although the Home Office says that they will not be requiring Responsible Persons to ensure competence yet, they are currently in discussion with the building industry and will provide further information shortly.

What are the penalties for noncompliance?

One of the most significant implications is that regulators will have greater power to ensure adherence to fire safety standards. A new Building Safety Regulator (BSR) is to be introduced, with powers to enforce penalties ranging from fines to prison sentences against those who fail to comply with the regulations.

Ambition - it runs in the family!

From father to daughters and to sons into the future, the family building on 46 years of sales and servicing success Major Owen was established in 1977

by Major Raymond Owen and has since enjoyed a successful 46 years in business representing reputable brands including Kubota, Toro and Honda. Based in the town of Penrhyndeudraeth in North-West Wales, the company came from humble beginnings with the business operating from Major’s garden shed at his home.

Now boasting a purpose built premises complete with large workshop, yard, and sizeable showroom, we spoke with

Major’s son-in-law, Director, Andy Jones about the business and their decision to re-join as BAGMA members earlier in 2023.

Your beginnings started as primarily a groundcare dealer. How has the business adapted to suit the growing market demands?

How has the business changed over the last 46 years and how did you become involved?

With great brands, we have grown our groundcare business significantly and have established a loyal customer base and great reputation in the area.

We have always been proactive in recognising shifts of demand and in 1991 specifically we noticed a boom in the golf industry. We had great product from the Kubota portfolio for this, which was quickly complemented by our further appointment by Toro in 1995 which gave us a complete package to sell. I took it upon myself to focus my attention on the golf sector and growing that part of the business. It remains a strong area for us today.

Major Owen has undergone huge change and ultimately has gone from strength to strength over the past 46 years. I joined around 39 years ago after I met Major’s youngest daughter, Cheryl.

At the time, Major was based in the old Town Hall and was looking for a mechanic, so I came onboard taking the team up to four. We specialised in the domestic market focusing on chainsaws, ride-on mowers and strimmers before Major was offered the Kubota franchise in 1987 which was a huge milestone. It all grew from there. Following the appointment, my role naturally evolved into installing then selling machines which I moved into full-time shortly after. Covering a huge geographical area, we then expanded the team to employ more mechanics and a parts person to look after the aftersales part of the business.

In addition to our Kubota groundcare status we were awarded the Kubota construction range in 1992 which presented lots of opportunities. The range allowed us to get in front of more customers, with Kubota’s strong reputation strengthening our position as a top-choice machinery provider in the area.

Following the 2008 recession we changed how we ran and operated our business. We knew that we couldn’t expand our premises any further and, while we investigated developing another site, we decided that the cost involved was not justifiable at the time. Instead, we focussed on having more sales representatives on the road and more remote working which continues to work well for us.

Does the company remain family owned?

Yes, proudly so! Major retired from the business in 1997 which saw myself and my wife take on the business alongside Major’s other daughter Debbie and her husband David Burnham. The four of us worked hard to continue building and evolving the business before David retired in 2008 leaving myself and Cheryl to take over the ownership. Debbie is still within the business, balancing the books, and is a great asset along with her daughter Maddie who looks after our advertising and marketing. My brother Rob is my Workshop Floor Manager and has worked with me for over 30 years!

My two sons are also involved in the business – Luke, my youngest, has been full-time with us since he was 18 and has progressed through the workshop to Aftersales Director in the space of 10 years. My eldest Josh is involved in financial strategy, forecasting and planning which he has always enjoyed.

As the business moves forwards and I eventually step back, they will become more involved. It’s a lovely legacy, especially considering Major’s father was working on chainsaws and mowers in the late 1960’s, before the company was officially founded. It is truly part of family history.

at your disposal, you still have to pay people’s wages and cover business costs.

COVID was very challenging, but we kept busy thanks to good stock levels and our diverse offering.

Another huge challenge, and probably the biggest currently, is recruitment. It was hard to find good people before the pandemic, but now it seems virtually impossible! We recognise this is an industry-wide problem, and not one that seems to be improving quickly. It isn’t an issue limited to one department either.

We are in an area that is more sparsely populated which can make things harder, but one thing we are doing is working closely with Llysfasi College near Ruthin who, in conjunction with Kubota, are offering a handful of dedicated apprenticeship schemes for our sector.

From an opportunity perspective, we must make sure we keep things fresh and keep pushing everything forward. Having the younger generations within the business will definitely help with this.

Is there anything significant you think you have learnt following the pandemic?

I would say we all learnt to adapt and overcome because it was necessary for survival. We learnt more about the business because of the time it gave us to step back and breathe.

How big is the team and how is it split between departments of the business?

We currently have 26 team members throughout the company with eight mechanics (four on the road), two service administrators and four sales representatives across our area.

When it comes to the company division, our construction business is probably the larger part because the equipment is of a higher cost and that accounts for around 60% of the company sales.

Groundcare makes up approx. 35% and the rest is sales in the domestic market.

Even in the modern era of e-commerce, our showroom continues to do well with a lot of people still valuing the opportunity to come in and see the product and speak with a member of our team.

What are the company’s biggest challenges and opportunities?

Like any company we have had plenty of challenging times. Recently, the pandemic presented a variety of challenges particularly with stock. Even in tough selling conditions, with limited equipment

I think one of the biggest downsides for us as dealers following the pandemic is the ramping up of prices we’ve experienced, in some cases up to 22%.

We know that the brands we hold are reputable, premium products but we also want to remain competitive as well as make a margin. It’s a fine line.

Today’s inflated prices give competitors opportunities to offer silly discounts to win the deal, which is a shame and makes a challenging job even harder. There is business out there for everyone and we all should agree to be sensible to ensure we don’t devalue the brands we hold.

If there was one bit of support you’d ask the manufacturer for, what would it be?

I’ve already mentioned it, but stock levels, specifically that there is seemingly increasing pressure for us to carry additional stock. Our main manufacturers are ok, but across the board, brands need to appreciate there is only so much we can financially afford to stock.

Conversations around flexible, affordable stocking or some options would be great.

What’s the most important thing that customers come to Major Owen for?

I would hope it is for the after sales because that’s been a big area of our business growth. With reputable brands such as Kubota and Toro, you are assured of quality so ‘touch wood’ we find machines are reliable and that customers don’t encounter too many issues - most we do see tend to come down to neglect, dirty fuel or misuse. Still, if someone purchases a machine from us, then I would like to think they have that peace of mind that if something was wrong, we would do whatever it takes to provide a solution.

Do you have a loyal customer base?

I would like to think so, but the market is becoming increasingly price driven, so where there is a significant price difference in a machine, you can’t blame a customer for looking elsewhere. We don’t doubt that we have competition to contend with across our large area, it might not be as densely populated but it can still be a challenge. Beside our local competition, we also see it coming in from Shropshire, Cheshire and South Wales.

for a long time helps with both retaining customers and bringing in new ones.

How do you create a positive and productive work environment for your team?

We try our best to keep everyone happy and encourage a good environment, with the usual things like Christmas parties, birthday cakes and bacon rolls on a Friday.

Between that, we try and maintain a feelgood factor and importantly retain open lines of communication. I always tell the team that my door opens both ways – if they have something on their mind, they can always come and talk to me. On the flip side, I will go and chat with the team if I have concerns. I’d like to think everyone feels appreciated and valued which can be tough when trying to fix something on a cold, wet day but we all do fantastically well.

How do you find recruitment in this area of the country for your business?

We advertise in the usual ways but seem to find the current calibre of applicants isn’t generally where it used to be. Employer options are fairly limited here so if people want to stay local, then they might come to us, which is positive.

We do tend to retain staff well and many of our people have been with us a long time.

You recently re-joined BAGMA as a member, welcome back!

Thank you! We were BAGMA members back in the 1980’s but the membership lapsed, not for any reason in particular.

We then made contact again this year and are delighted to be a BAGMA member once again!

Have any of the BAGMA services attracted you?

The training courses will definitely be beneficial. We have done some of the installation training through Kubota before, but we will be looking into utilising more of the courses ourselves going forward.

What does BAGMA mean to you?

It is great to be affiliated with BAGMA - an association that is recognised and well-respected in the trade. The value it brings is two-fold – the value we receive on training/services as members and the reassurance our customers gain from our membership of BAGMA.

which doesn’t worry us because of the quality of machines we sell. While borrowing isn’t as attractive, we must be more adaptable to make the customer feel comfortable.

What do you think are the biggest threats to the machinery industry in the next five years?

I would like to think very bright and positive. Having my two sons involved has been great and they have their own ideas and an appetite to move things forward.

We want to maintain our proactive approach and ensure we are listening to what the customers’ demands are to keep ahead and remain competitive. We are firm believers in slow and steady wins the race which has served us well for the last 46 years, and hopefully the next 46 too!

Apart from recruitment, I would probably say finances. Since the interest rates have gone up there is definitely greater uncertainty. We have introduced slightly different finance schemes to give the customer more options – either matching their cash flow patterns or spreading payments over longer periods

Doddie Weir tartan tractor tours Scotland to raise funds for MND A tractor decorated in tartan has been touring Scotland to raise funds for Doddie Weir’s Motor Neurone Disease (MND) charity.

AllGrass Scotland, Bryson Tractors and Campey Turf Care introduced a New Holland T4.75 which has been wrapped in the tartan synonymous with the former Scottish Rugby Union player and farmer, Doddie Weir at the Royal Highland Show who died in November 2022 from MND. The campaign was launched on the New Holland stand at The Royal Highland show, and has subsequently appeared at various events throughout the summer to raise funds for Mr Weir’s My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Mr Weir was diagnosed with MND in 2017 and he proved to be an inspiration by fundraising and aiding research of the disease with the creation of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

The charity has since raised millions of pounds to aid the research of MND. He died in November 2022 but his memory has lived on with fundraisers supporting the charity, for example Crawford Niven created a 1.5km cutting resembling Mr Weir on his rye field in Perth, Scotland to support the MND charity.

Education Fund, Event Director Christopher Bassett said: “Unfortunately, the number of young people embarking on a career in grounds management is in decline and collectively, we should be doing all we can to change this. Education is the first step into the industry but the numbers coming through and qualifying are worryingly low.”

GroundsFest announces Education Fund Organisers of GroundsFest have announced that event profits are being reinvested back into the industry. The GroundsFest Education Fund has been designed to provide support to help students at land-based colleges overcome specific barriers to participation so they can remain in education.

The aim of the Fund is to not only support and enhance a student’s education experience but to encourage more people into the industry by making education more accessible.

Through profits generated from GroundsFest, students will be able to reach their full potential by obtaining funding for a wide range of items such as course literature, stationary, tools, laptops, computers and other electrical goods, driving lessons, and accredited training courses on subjects including machinery, weed management, sports turf maintenance, lawn care, arboriculture and many more.

More machinery giants to showcase latest kit at LAMMA L eading farm machinery brands JCB, Case IH, and Massey Ferguson have all confirmed a return to LAMMA in 2024, rejoining regular exhibitors including SAME Deutz, Fahr, Merlo, Krone, Valtra and Fendt at the UK’s largest farm machinery event at the NEC Birmingham on 17-18 January.

Following its success last year, the Demo Arena is back and bigger than before, with many expected to use the dedicated show space to demonstrate new agricultural innovations.
