very warm welcome to the British Academy Television Craft Awards. This evening is a celebration of the very best behind-the-scenes talent in British television. Judging by the quality of the nominations alone, it has been another outstanding year for television craft. Chief among the honours is the Special Award, which will be conferred not to any one individual but a whole team of talented practitioners. We salute the outstanding behind-the-scenes crew of one of the nation’s most popular entertainment shows: Strictly Come Dancing. Particularly in the television industry, teamwork is a prerequisite for success. It does not come about through happy coincidence or without strong leadership. Strictly embraces the team ethic entirely; with a surfeit of brilliant individuals, it is a team that delivers quality, and consistently – 10 years on our screens and counting, Strictly has stood the test of time. Many individuals are recognised for their outstanding work this evening too, whose

crafts can take a lifetime to master. It is their dedication to creativity, innovation and excellence that shines through every one of their nominations. Congratulations and good luck to you. It’s no secret that creative workflows have become more fluid – but until now, the way you capture, transfer and share your work has been frozen in time. That’s why we designed the Evolution Series – a swappable, expandable dual-bay storage platform that gives creative pros the speed and flexibility they need today. The hub of the system is the G-DOCK ev™ with Thunderbolt™, plus two go-to portable drives that each move up to 2TB seamlessly from shoot to edit to post. Take the stand-alone drives out on location. Hand them off to your partners. Then back at your workstation, swap the drives into the dock to transfer your work with its ultra-fast Thunderbolt interface. And the whole solution is RAID 0 and 1 configurable. Swap in. Swap out. The evolution starts now at g-technology.eu

THE SPECIAL AWARD
With 10 years and more than 240 shows under its sequined belt, tonight’s recipient of the Academy’s Special Award, Strictly Come Dancing, has proved it’s a cha-cha-champion of light entertainment. Wor ds by M at t h e w Be l l
n May 20 04 , breakfast television presenter Natasha Kaplinsky sashayed onto the dance floor and Strictly Come Dancing took its first tentative steps into the world. Over the following decade the BBC One show – which pairs celebrities and professional ballroom dancers in a contest to out tango, waltz and cha-cha-cha each other – has come of age. It has become a much-loved Saturday night fixture, mixing drama, emotion and, when the less capable celebrities take to the floor, hilarity. Audiences have topped 14 million and the format has been sold to more than 40 countries. Now, in the year it celebrates its 10th birthday, Strictly Come Dancing receives a well-deserved British Academy Special Award in recognition of its outstanding creative and technical achievements. The perfectly honed light entertainment show that appears on screen hides the amount of sheer hard work that the off-screen talent puts into making live television. “There is a huge amount of pressure,” says Strictly Come Dancing’s director Nikki Parsons, nominated herself this year in the Director: 16
Multi‑camera category. “Behind the scenes, it’s sometimes chaotic but that chaos never makes it on air, which is a testament to the abilities of the team. Making the show is a huge team effort. Everyone pulls together while working in the most stressful situations – and produces brilliant results.” Although the show is very much a team effort, Parsons does single out a few names for special mention: “Lighting director Mark Kenyon and production designer Patrick Doherty are key to how the show looks – they’ve been on Strictly since the very beginning.” As a veteran of more than 150 shows, Parsons is well qualified to comment on Strictly Come Dancing’s success. “It’s family entertainment – there’s something for everybody in it, from kids to grandparents. Strictly’s a happy show, which is not out to humiliate people.” She also mentions the show’s “warmth and intimacy”, which surely emanates from the hosts, BAFTA Fellow Sir Bruce Forsyth (who recently announced his retirement from the show) and Tess Daly. Unlike other talent shows, the judges are almost always pleasant on Strictly, including pantomime villain British Academy Te levision Craft Awards

MAKING THE SHOW IS A HUGE TEA M EFFORT. EVERYONE PULLS TOGETHER... WITH BRILLIANT RESULTS. Craig Revel Horwood. “Even ‘Evil Craig’ is nice,” laughs Parsons. It is the comedic moments that stand out from Parsons’ years working on the show: “John Sergeant pulling Kristina (Rihanoff ) across the floor, Ann Widdecombe flashing her knickers, Russell Grant being fired out of a cannon and, last year, hairy biker Dave Myers – everything he did was memorable.” She has also enjoyed watching the celebrities knuckle down and learn to do something alien to them. “In the early years we had quite a few sportsmen, such as Matt Dawson and Mark The Special Award
Ramprakash, who couldn’t dance for toffee when they started. But by the end of it they were amazing. “I’ve absolutely loved working on Strictly,” says Parsons, who is again onboard for this year’s run. “At the end of every series, you think, ‘I can’t do that again – it half killed me,’ but that’s soon forgotten and then I’m looking forward to working with a great team of people again.” She adds: “Speaking on behalf of the team, we all love working on Strictly and are so proud of what we’ve achieved. We’re producing a series with high production values, which people really enjoy watching.” 17

What’s been the biggest advancement in your business this past year?
What is it about British television that inspires you to be involved with these Awards?
The biggest advancement in our business this year has been the Trainee Scheme. Now in its second year and with backing from Creative Skillset, the Sara Putt Associates Trainee Scheme is growing to be a key part of our business. We offer up to 25 young freelancers across camera, sound, art department, editing and production a six-month programme of masterclasses, workshops, mentoring, career guidance and access to all our information about forthcoming productions. It is a programme based on developing their ‘soft skills’ – networking, branding, marketing, business acumen and so on – that will enable them to fulfil their potential in a freelance environment. Securing the backing from Skillset has made a huge difference to the scope and scale of what we can offer to our trainees. Visit: www.saraputt.co.uk
CARAT* is now available at more than 150 points of sale in the UK and a significant amount of growth came in 2013. We are continuing our commitment to support the arts, not only through our existing partnership with BAFTA, but also expanding this year to further support the incredible work of the behind-the-scenes people who form such an integral part of the British television experience. We’re inspired by the opportunity to show the crafts community our own creativity and the potential to be involved in production. As with most retailers, our biggest challenge is being able to stay relevant in the fast-moving world of contemporary and fashion jewellery. Visit: www.carat.co
What is it about British television that inspires you to be involved with these Awards? At The London Studios, we specialise in producing awardwinning entertainment shows. It’s a genre that has always been a British strength. Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway demonstrates the huge team effort involved with making these shows. Typically a production team of 50 people research and prepare for the show every week. Their ideas mean that the show goes way beyond the studio: we can be asked to cover anywhere from the outside of the tower to 22 floors of lift shaft. The crew can run to 100 people across all crafts – from cameras, scenic and lighting to engineering – and every one of them has a skilled and crucial role to play in producing more than an hour of superlative, live Saturday night entertainment. Finally, every television show can look like James Bond. The last year has seen the continued rise of the cine influence in the television sector. Cameras such as the Sony F55 and Canon C300 have opened up cost-effective solutions to producers who do not always have the budget for the highly desirable Arri Alexa or Red cameras. Combined with lenses such as the Zeiss CP2 and Cooke miniS4, achieving a high-end cinematic look on a budget is becoming a more achievable target. What’s been the biggest advancement in your business this past year? The biggest advancement in business at The Farm Group has been the number of productions that have made good use of our ability to work in various and/or multiple locations. Over the past 12 months, we have had teams in places as diverse as Sochi, Austria, the Olympic Park in Stratford and, of course, Soho and Hollywood.
