WELCOME 2017 It is going to be a very interesting year ahead filled with challenges and opportunity. I, for one, look forward to seeing what we can achieve.
Welcome to Scotland’s Screen Industries night of the year. These are exciting times in Scotland for Film, Television & Games, and BAFTA Scotland remains at the heart of celebrating and promoting excellence in all three disciplines. I am honoured to have been elected as the Chair of BAFTA Scotland and really look forward to my tenure over the next two years. Reflecting on the amazing content our industry has produced over the year is so important. Tonight is a great opportunity to take the time to recognise the breadth of talent our country has produced and be proud of our achievements. That is why BAFTA Scotland is so important and this evening is so very special. BAFTA Scotland’s work does not stop at our Awards. Jude MacLaverty and her wonderful team have produced a fantastic programme of events throughout the year: from sessions for seasoned industry professionals to young talent looking to get their first break. The events programme has included Craft Masterclasses (Special Effects with Steven Begg, Costume Design with Trisha Biggar), TV Drama Previews (Fortitude, The Replacement, Trust Me) Q&As, Games Workshops and a fabulous In Conversation with Alan Cumming at Oran Mor.
As a charity, BAFTA Scotland relies entirely on Scottish membership income, sponsorship, core funding and event ticket sales to run the Glasgow office, the Awards, the screenings and the Learning and Events Programme. BAFTA UK CHAIR’S MESSAGE Every year, these awards celebrate the very best in Scottish film, games and television. The ceremony also plays a vital role in recognising and rewarding the most talented Scottish individuals working within the UK (directors, writers and actors) and also honours non-Scottish talent who have worked on Scottish-based productions. Congratulations in particular to our Special Award honourees for 2017, writer, director and broadcaster, Armando Iannucci and wildlife cameraman, Doug Allan. BAFTA Scotland’s charitable work is not all about the Awards – its year-round learning and events activity reaches out to communities all around Scotland. We work hard to nurture and develop interest in film, games and television particularly among young people, who are the future of our industries; we help talented newcomers get onto the ladder with a fantastic programme of career-starting initiatives such as the inaugural Guru Live event in Glasgow in May, the Arcadia games conference in Dundee and the monthly Career Close Up events with esteemed craft practitioners. BAFTA Scotland runs a varied programme of events throughout the year, with the aim of celebrating the art forms of film, television and games within Scotland.
We continue to nurture and support individuals (whatever their background) to reach their full potential through learning from peers and established practitioners.
Our events honour both home-grown and global talent, and allow students, practitioners and the wider community to debate and discuss the key issues affecting the Scottish screen industries. In May 2017, alongside Guru Live at 195 Piccadilly, we produced Guru Live Glasgow in the Centre for Contemporary Arts - a day long event full of inspirational masterclasses and panels with top industry names in film, television and games. We are already planning Guru Live Glasgow for May 2018 so nominees and winners tonight, watch this space – we rely on your expertise to inspire the minds of the next generation of talent. We may be in touch!

DOUG ALLAN Doug Allan was born and raised in Scotland. He graduated from Stirling University with a B.Sc. in Marine Biology. He first went to Antarctica in 1976 with the British Antarctic Survey spending the next nine years working as a research diver, biologist, underwater photographer and station commander at both Signy and Halley bases. In 1986 he turned to wildlife filmmaking, and since then has specialised in extreme environments, particularly the north and south polar regions both above and below the water. He has filmed wildlife and expeditions all over the world, including the upper reaches of Mount Everest. Doug has been involved with over 65 films, doing assignments as a freelancer for the BBC, Discovery, National Geographic and many other commissioners. He was

principal cameraman on many award winning programmes and series such as the BBC’s Life in the Freezer, Wildlife Special - Polar Bear, The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Life, Human Planet Frozen Planet, Operation Iceberg and Forces of Nature. His photographic awards include eight Emmys and four BAFTAs amongst many others. He’s been involved most recently with films highlighting the ocean issues of overfishing and plastic pollution. Tonight, we are delighted that Doug Allan has abandoned his polar adventures to fly home to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Craft Award. “Wildlife cameramen don’t come much more special than Doug” – Sir David Attenborough

ARMANDO IANNUCCI Armando Iannucci is one of the most critically acclaimed comedy writers/ producers/directors of the past 20 years. Born and educated in Glasgow, his stellar career has seen him become a household name within the global film and television industry. After starting out with BBC Scotland in the late 80s, Armando went on to gain recognition for numerous productions including his spoof news show The Day Today which led to him winning the unique Special Jury British Comedy Award. His work on The Day Today with Steve Coogan led him to Knowing Me, Knowing You and I’m Alan Partridge. He also fronted his own satirical shows The Friday Night Armistice for BBC2 and The Armando Iannucci Shows for Channel 4.
His screenplay for his film In The Loop was nominated for an Oscar and his political sitcom, The Thick of It picked up three BAFTAs. Armando has also won ten British Comedy Awards, including a Special Award for his contribution to British comedy, and, in 2011, a Special Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Award. In The Loop undoubtedly provided further inspiration for HBO’s Emmy award winning Veep. 2017 has been another standout year for Armando with the premiere of his second feature film, The Death of Stalin in September. Tonight, we are very proud to welcome Armando Iannucci back to his home city to receive the Outstanding Contribution To Film and Television Award.
