WELC OME

In what has been such a difficult year for so many – across our industries, at home in the UK and in the wider world – it’s such a joy to be able to play host to a celebration of the remarkable. To win a BAFTA is always a mark of excellence, but to be nominated in a year like no other, where uncertainty has reigned, is a testament to the talent, creativity and perseverance of our industry. We congratulate all of this evening’s nominees: they are the very best at what they do. Our Awards remain a unique celebration of all that’s good, moving, provocative and powerful about television, championing talent both in front of and behind the camera. Covid-19 has created many challenges for the television industry. Productions have undergone multiple stop-starts; cast and crew have had to find new ways of working together, with pre-production often including periods of self-isolation; technology has been a saviour and a hindrance, when it breaks down; and travel, at home and overseas, has been halted, all impacting on the creative process. Much of our industry is made up of freelancers, too, and job security, as well as finances, have been a huge cause for concern. And yet, as the nominations highlight, the industry has shown incredible resilience and resistance, pulling together like never before, to produce stunning works. As we move towards a more open world, we are optimistic about the future. BAFTA has faced its own challenges during this time. With the generosity and support of our members, our partners, sponsors and donors, the wider industry and our tireless staff, we have continued to deliver spectacular content and vital initiatives under extraordinary circumstances. We invite you to visit our website and follow our social media to stay informed on all that we do to shine a light on the very best talent and creative endeavours in the screen arts. We are moving into a new era at BAFTA, as we head towards our 75th year in 2022, and we hope you will join us on this exciting journey. We wish you all a wonderful evening and every success for the rest of the year.

Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment Tonight’s only award voted for by you – the Great British public. Last year, amazing British TV brought us all together. But which of our shortlist did you vote as the Must-See Moment of 2020? Tell us your favourite and follow all tonight’s action at @VirginMedia #VirginMediaBAFTAs

YO U R BIG BA F TA N I GHT I N STA RTS HER E

Thank you for joining us for the 2021 Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards – a night we’re dedicating to the best of the television that brought us all together last year. For a second year, Awards season looks a little different. But we’re grateful to now be able to invite some of our favourite television stars to walk the red carpet and enjoy the ceremony safely, in person. I hope we will all be there to join them in 2022. Last year, more than ever, television brought the country together – connecting us through laughter, tears and edge-of-your-seat cliff hangers. During a tough time, we’re proud to have played a part in keeping the nation connected and entertained – and tonight’s no different. Since we couldn’t invite the public along in person, we’re giving them the next best thing as part of our big BAFTA night in – the chance to appear live as a hologram on the red carpet, experiencing the Awards virtually alongside some of television’s biggest names. We’re also excited to crown Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment of 2020 – the Awards’ only category voted for by the Great British public. This year’s shortlist celebrates the diverse array of programmes on Britain’s small screen, and the talent behind it. The quality is truly outstanding, and we know it was no easy feat settling on these six nominees. So, on behalf of BAFTA and Virgin Media, we’d like to say a big thank you to our judging panel, expertly chaired by Hannah Wyatt of BAFTA’s Television Committee. And to you, the nation’s television fans, for voting to help us crown the Must-See Moment of 2020. Now, I invite you to settle into your sofas for the 2021 Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards. Enjoy the show!

Lutz Schüler CEO, Virgin Media O2
