WELCOME 2018 Welcome to Scotland’s Screen Industries night of the year. My first year as Chair has seen BAFTA Scotland go from strength to strength. These are hugely exciting times in Scotland for Film, Television & Games, and BAFTA Scotland remains at the heart of celebrating and promoting excellence in all three disciplines. Tonight is a great opportunity to take the time to recognise the breadth of talent our country has produced and be proud of our achievements. That is why BAFTA Scotland is so important and this evening is so very special. As a charity, BAFTA Scotland’s work does not stop at our Awards. The BAFTA Scotland team have produced a fantastic programme of events and screenings throughout the year. Many of our new members are students and career starters. We are doing a lot of work to help young people break into the industry. We are also looking at ways we can work with young people who might otherwise not think of the screen industries as a career path. For the past two years, we have produced Guru Live, a day of industry access, masterclasses, networking and careers advice. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive and the event is already scheduled for 30 March 2019. It is going to be a very interesting year ahead filled with challenges and opportunity. I, for one, look forward to seeing what we can achieve. With our industry making the headlines for the wrong reasons in the last year, BAFTA has unequivocally promoted a professional environment that protects all who work in it from bullying and harassment. At this
watershed moment, let’s work together in resetting the tone and continuing to build a future where anyone – regardless of who they are or where they’re from – can flourish in the industry we love so much, we can be a catalyst for real and lasting change. The commitment from public service broadcasters to increased commissioning from outside of London is great news for the production sector. It feels like a genuinely exciting time for programme makers based in Scotland and our talent is up for the challenge. I look forward to seeing more programming made by our fantastic home-grown creatives on the networks in the coming year. I’d like to thank the BAFTA Scotland Committee for giving their time and wisdom throughout the year. A huge thanks to Jude and her brilliant team who have put together this magnificent evening and work to support our industry throughout the year with limited resources. To all the industry professionals who participated on Juries and give their time and expertise to support our programme of events and of course our membership, thank you all. BAFTA’s Scotland Awards play a vital role in recognising the very best Scottish individuals working within the UK (directors, writers and actors) and non-Scottish talent who have worked on Scottish-based productions. Each of those honoured tonight is an inspirational figure, not only for BAFTA and their peers, but crucially for the next generation of talent. Inspiring talented newcomers and creating opportunities for all, regardless of their background, gender or race, is at the heart of what BAFTA does. We are completely committed to strengthening and supporting the future of our industries by empowering diverse voices and talents to reach their full potential.

PA D D Y HIGSON Outstanding Contribution to the Scottish Industry 2018
Whilst studying art, Paddy also taught at Cardonald College, and then at RSAMD, working with 2nd and 3rd year Digital Film Paddy Higson has worked in the film and and Television students particularly mentoring television industries since the 1970s producing, 3rd year students with their graduation films. line producing and exec producing drama In 2014 Paddy was asked to act as producer/ content. Her filmography includes Scottish mentor on Jump Cut – an initiative from classics and favourites such as That Sinking Film City Glasgow and Sigma Films to Feeling, Gregory’s Girl, Comfort and Joy, encourage young entrants into the film Restless Natives, Cardiac Arrest, Orphans and industry. She was executive producer on the The Magdalene Sisters. She was executive resulting BAFTA Scotland nominated film – producer of Tartan Shorts and a number of Dropping Off Michael. RSAMD and RCS Graduation Films. She was a founding member of the Technician Training Scheme which became Scottish Screen Training. She also served on the Boards of the Scottish Film Council, 7:84 Theatre Company, Scottish Film Production Fund and Scottish Screen. She is currently Chair of the Board of GMAC Film.
In 2014 she was asked to go back to producing on Katie Morag, acting as a mentor to Katy Engels who was line producing for the first time on a television series. She was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Drama (RSAMD) for services to Film and Television in Scotland.
Paddy is passionate about encouraging people In 2002 Paddy retired from active production from all backgrounds to be able to find a way to realise a long-held ambition to study art and into film and television, and has always found paint. She has been president of the Glasgow enabling new talent incredibly rewarding. Southern Art Club and Treasurer of the Glasgow Society of Women Artists.

PA T CAMPBELL Outstanding Contribution to Craft (In Memory of Robert McCann) 2018 Pat Campbell is a highly regarded Production Designer, well known for her extensive work in television and film such as the BAFTA Award Winning adaptation of Wolf Hall, The State and The Promise – all collaborations with director Peter Kosminsky. Features include What We Did On Our Holiday, written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, with a memorable performance by Billy Connolly. Pat attended Glasgow School of Art then went on to work at the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow designing exhibitions. She then moved to BBC Scotland on a three month contract in the Design Department but also working as an usher in the evenings at The Glasgow Film Theatre. Working in the Film Theatre was the perfect job, a chance to view an endless stream of obscure European films. The contract at the BBC eventually led to a full time position assisting the more senior designers, then over time being given her own small shows to design, it was an excellent training ground in all aspects of the profession.
Pat worked mainly in the Drama Department with directors such as David Blair on Taking Over The Asylum and The Lakes and also designing the long standing set for River City. Pat recently designed the BBC Christmas production of War of the Worlds, directed by Craig Viveiros, with whom she also worked on Rillington Place, shot in Glasgow, for which she received a nomination last year for a BAFTA Television Craft Award. Previous BAFTA nominations were for Appropriate Adult, directed by Julian Jarrold, Eric and Ernie, directed by Jonny Campbell and for Britz and The State, both directed by Peter Kosminsky. In 2013 Pat was nominated for Australian Academy of Cinema and Television for Mrs Biggs and in 2016 for an Art Director’s Guild Award for Wolf Hall.
