Growing the next generation of Scottish talent
Screen Scotland congratulates all nominees, and everyone working to expand opportunities in Scotland from the grassroots up
Partner of the BAFTA Scotland Awards 2025 screen.scot/curriculum-for-scotland screen.scot/talent-builder @screenscots
WELCOME
Welcome to the BAFTA Scotland Awards, celebrating the captivating and dynamic work of Scotland’s best storytellers this past year. Their successes are indicative of the positive growth experienced by the Scottish screen industries, as revealed in recent research published by Screen Scotland. While we are mindful that challenges remain, not least for freelancers, the message is clear: Scotland is open for business.
This positivity extends to the grassroots level. The launch of the Film and Screen Curriculum in Scotland creates an entitlement for every child in the country aged 3 to 18 to learn the practical art of film and screen making, and, most importantly, recognise they can be a part of it.

BAFTA Scotland has been working to make our industries more democratic, too. In 2025, we gave 16 bursaries to emerging creatives based in Scotland, providing them with the vital financial support they need to develop their careers. We also widened our community of supporters with the launch of BAFTA Patrons in Scotland, where generous individuals with a passion for the screen arts are helping to grow the breadth of our work.
Our year-round initiatives are aimed at cementing Scotland’s place as a centre of global production, which, in turn, allows us to recognise exceptional storytelling at our Awards. Congratulations to all of this year’s inspirational nominees and thank you to everyone who makes this event possible.

Meet Our Host EDITH BOWMAN
WORDS Toby Weidmann | IMAGES BAFTA/ Carlo Paloni, 2024; BAFTA/Simon Murphy
Presenter and producer Edith Bowman has been in the broadcasting business for more than 20 years, hosting shows on almost all the major British TV networks and radio stations. A familiar face fronting music festivals and presenting on the red carpet at film premieres, Edith’s deep knowledge and genuine passion for music and film always shines through.
Nowhere is this best illustrated than in her awardwinning podcast, Soundtracking, a celebration of music and film, which will hit its 10th anniversary in 2026. Making her 13th appearance as BAFTA Scotland Awards’ host, you’d think she’d have seen it all, but she still feels that tingle of anticipation come event night.

I STILL PINCH MYSELF THAT I’M UP ON THAT STAGE MEETING MY HEROES AND CELEBRATING THEIR INSPIRING WORK.

Do you still get excited hosting the Awards?
Are you kidding? Every time feels like the first. The excitement is what helps propel me through the nerves. I’m such a big fan that I still pinch myself that I’m up on that stage meeting my heroes and celebrating their brilliant and inspiring work... It’s such a powerful way to celebrate the creativity Scotland has to offer. The room always feels like it’s about to burst at the seams as everyone wants to be a part of it.
What excites you about Scotland’s current screen industries?
It’s the range of things being made, it’s the reputation our craftspeople have around the world of being among the best, and it’s the fact that more and more productions are coming to Scotland to be part of what we have to offer.

Who were your early inspirations?
First and foremost, my mum. She’s always had the performer in her. Just the way she is with people has been a huge influence – her patience and compassion is incredible. With both my mum and dad, it’s been the work ethic that I’m grateful for. I love what I do and I love working. I’ve worked hard to get where I am and I never want to stop.
What advice would you give to young people wanting to become presenters?
Be you. Don’t be what you think someone wants you to be. Do it for the right reasons, not for a minute of fame or a viral hit. Find the thing that you are passionate about and immerse yourself in that. Also, learn as many skill as you can and listen. You learn so much just from listening.
Soundtracking is closing in on 550 episodes. What have been your biggest takeaways about what goes into making a great film or TV soundtrack?
We celebrate our 10th anniversary next year and that blows my mind. It’s only my mate Ben and me that make it, and I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved... We’ve worked hard to build the brand and gain a great reputation in the industry, and we’re lucky to get the guests we do. Spielberg and Scorsese were definitely highlights, but I also love shining a light on new talent or little films that we believe in and want to shout about.
Outstanding Contribution to Film
and Television

EWAN M c GREGOR OBE
WORDS Toby Weidmann | IMAGES Fabrice Dall’Anese/Corbis via Getty Images (portrait); Film4 (Trainspotting); Apple TV (Long Way Up)
If timing is everything then actor Ewan McGregor’s arrival on our screens could not have been better. Tired of the bombastic, taciturn action heroes of the 1980s, audiences were in the mood for something different in the 90s, and it came in the shape of a young man from Perthshire. Alongside a seemingly natural talent for acting, Ewan brought something else to the table: a subtlety, nuance, and captivating screen charisma that blended kinetic masculine energy with a softer, empathetic edge.

IT’S SO LOVELY TO BE THOUGHT OF FOR THIS YEAR’S SPECIAL AWARD. I AM EXCITED TO GO TO THE EVENT AND LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING WITH MY PEERS THERE.
Above: Trainspotting (1996)
Opposite: Long Way Up (2019)

Ewan’s explosion onto the scene timed perfectly with the arrival of another exciting new voice in British cinema. While the six-part drama Lipstick on Your Collar (1993) marked Ewan’s screen debut, it was his vibrant collaboration with filmmaker Danny Boyle that catapulted him to international stardom. As Danny’s trilogy of hits, Shallow Grave (1994), Trainspotting (1996), and A Life Less Ordinary (1997), injected a much-needed adrenalin shot in the arm of our homegrown storytelling, Ewan’s captivating performances in those films would help redefine the makeup of the modern leading man.
He can be the steely action hero, as demonstrated by Obi-Wan Kenobi in the blockbusting Star Wars franchise (1999-2022) or in Michael Bay thrill-ride The Island (2005). He excels as a treacherous villain: Angels & Demons (2009) and Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020). He can play flamboyant and charming: Moulin Rouge! (2001) and Big Fish (2003). He can be outrageous and overt: the Iggy Pop-inspired Curt Wild in Velvet Goldmine (1998). But he is perhaps at his best in more grounded, often more intimate stories: Brassed Off (1996), Little Voice (1998),Young Adam (2003), Miss Potter (2006), Fargo (2017), Halston (2021), Bleeding Love (2023), and A Gentleman in Moscow (2024), to name a few from Ewan’s 100-plus film and TV credits.

He has also become a familiar face in factual TV, with his entertaining travelogue series with friend Charley Boorman, Long Way... (2004-2025), now in its fourth series. Their most recent adventure, Long Way Home (2025), saw the pair ride vintage motorbikes from Ewan’s home in Scotland to Charley’s place in London, but, as the title suggests, it was far from an uneventful trip down the M1, taking them all over Europe.
This Special Award is not Ewan’s first brush with BAFTA, previously earning two BAFTA Scotland wins alongside a BAFTA Britannia award in recognition of his humanitarian work; the latter includes being a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF UK. Among his other accolades are an Emmy, Golden Globe, BIFA, and Critics Choice awards, and he was appointed OBE in 2013.
About this BAFTA Scotland Outstanding Contribution to Film and Television award, Ewan says: “It’s so lovely to be thought of for this year’s Special Award. I am excited to go to the event and looking forward to meeting with my peers there. Who knows? A new collaboration could be born out of such a thing. Thank you, BAFTA Scotland.”

SUPPORT THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCOTTISH TALENT
We are an industry of storytellers. Stories change lives – they influence how we think, how we behave, and they inspire us. It’s crucial that these stories, and the storytellers, truly reflect the society we live in.
The screen industries in Scotland and beyond must be open to talented people from all backgrounds and life experience. BAFTA is the only organisation to represent film, games, and TV globally, and we’re uniquely placed to discover, inspire, support, and celebrate existing and future Scottish creatives in the screen arts.
In Scotland, we work year-round to identify and tackle barriers to entry and progression in our industries via our work in schools, our scholarships and bursaries, our talent accelerator programmes, networking and community building events, masterclasses, workshops, and mentoring. This work is supported by the exceptional generosity of our recently launched BAFTA Patrons in Scotland programme. Their vital support is enabling BAFTA to broaden the reach and impact of our work in Scotland.

Buying a home is widely regarded as one of the most stressful periods in a person’s life. But what if there were a couple of savvy property finders on hand to help you find the perfect forever home in the ideal location? Because, as the old house-hunting adage goes, ‘location is everything’.
This was the premise that birthed Location Location Location, produced by Glasgow-headquartered company IWC Media for Channel 4 and fronted by hosts and home finders Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer. It was a tantalising premise for a new property show that quickly captivated the nation, with UK audiences tuning in week-in, week-out in their millions since the series launch in May 2000.

LOCATION LOCATION
LOCATION’S LONGEVITY IS TESTAMENT TO A SUSTAINED EFFORT AND CAREFUL DEVELOPMENT OVER 25 YEARS TO NEVER TAKE THE SERIES FOR GRANTED.
Gerard Costello, IWC Media

Twenty-five years on and Location Location Location’s appeal shows no sign of waning, with the programme topping 400 episodes across 43 seasons in 2025. The series celebrated this landmark back in May, with Channel 4 broadcasting a dedicated night of Location Location Location programming, including two new specials, providing its hosts a chance to reflect on helping nearly 750 people find their ideal home from more than 1,800 viewings.
Location Location Location has made an equally impressive indent on the Scottish TV industry. Over its 25-year history, the series has provided countless opportunities with Scottishbased production and editorial roles, allowing many to find their first footing in the industry through IWC Media’s incredible development of homegrown talent. This includes a commitment to improving diversity and inclusion, offering placements on IWC Media productions through multiple initiatives, including TRC’s training scheme, RAD Scotland, aimed at giving paid placements to underrepresented creatives in the local TV industry.
Above: Edinburgh | Opposite: South Coast

As much as this BAFTA Scotland Special Award is about celebrating the achievements of Location Location Location over the past 25 years – which includes two previous BAFTA Scotland wins and six nominations – it’s also about the outstanding contribution the show has made to the Scottish TV industry. Gerard Costello, head of popular factual at IWC Media (part of Banijay UK), says: “All of us at IWC are hugely proud of Location Location Location and the many talented professionals who have brought their skill and dedication to the series over the years. From the beginning, it has been instrumental in building a Scottish base in popular factual programming, and Glasgow stands as a centre of excellence in this genre today.
“The whole team, and none more so than Kirstie and Phil, retain their keen determination to help the programme’s house hunters, and that remains the lifeblood of this series. Its longevity is also testament to a sustained effort and careful development over 25 years to never take the series for granted. We are immensely grateful to Channel 4 for their faith in the show, and to BAFTA for this honour.”
