WELCOME 2016 It is an exciting time in Scotland for Film, Television and Games, and BAFTA Scotland remain at the heart of celebrating and promoting excellence in all three disciplines. Excited as I am to be welcoming you to this, the main event in BAFTA Scotland’s calendar, there’s so much more to their work, year round. Their programme of screenings, masterclasses and events continues to expand, with this year’s addition of Career Close Ups with a multitude of experienced screen practitioners taking place to rave reviews from participants. There are some really exciting events lined up for the remainder of this year. As a charity focused on celebrating excellence in the screen industries, BAFTA Scotland rely on the support of membership to help deliver this programme of events, tonight’s awards, and much more besides. There’s never been a better time to join BAFTA Scotland. Earlier this year, BAFTA Scotland also celebrated the very best of emergent screen talent with their New Talent Awards. The high standards of work throughout the categories awarded were yet again of an exceptional standard, and we were delighted to welcome Danny Boyle, taking time out from

directing Trainspotting 2, to present the main award of the evening. I’m proud to be a member of a Committee that values and celebrates creative excellence for those just at the beginning of what will hopefully be hugely successful creative careers. I’ve only had the honour of a few months in the role of BAFTA Scotland Chair, which has coincided with a hugely busy time for Jude MacLaverty and her fantastic BAFTA Scotland team, building up to tonight. 144 jurors judged outstanding work across 18 categories. It’s a detailed but exciting process that brings this fantastic evening together. I’d personally like to thank all of those jurors, our hard-working and passionate committee, our membership and those who were able to vote for entries, and the BAFTA Scotland team in making it all ultimately happen. Huge thanks to our core supporters Creative Scotland, BBC Scotland and Creative Scotland, our category sponsors, and all the team behind the scenes helping to hopefully make tonight memorable for you all. Enjoy the show, and to all nominees, congratulations and good luck! IAN MACKENZIE CHAIR, BAFTA SCOTLAND 05

BAFTA UK CHAIR’S MESSAGE It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s British Academy Scotland Awards. Every year, the British Academy Scotland Awards play a vital role in recognising and rewarding the very best of the country’s moving image industries, which have a long history of producing exceptional work. Congratulations in particular to our Special Award honorees for 2016, the brilliantly talented make up artist from Glasgow, Christine Cant, and the team at Sixteen Films - Ken Loach, Paul Laverty and Rebecca O’Brien – who have been a hugely important force within the Scottish film industry, shooting six of their films in Scotland, providing work for countless Scottish crew, and giving a lot of local talent their first break: Martin Compston, Paul Brannigan and Atta Yaqub, to name a few. Beyond tonight’s awards in film, television and games, BAFTA Scotland hosts a year-round, dynamic and varied programme of events across the country. They show our commitment to developing new and emerging talent as well as satisfying the growing appetite of the BAFTA membership, the industry’s experts across film, television and games.

Since the beginning of the year, BAFTA Scotland has produced 40 events, alongside weekly members’ screenings in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. 2016 has also seen the launch of Career Close-Up, in association with Skills Development Scotland, our monthly session that helps graduates and career starters get into the industry. Thank you to all the outstanding staff - Jude MacLaverty and her dedicated team of Jenna Cunningham, Karen Rosie, Beverley McMillan, Emma Nicholson and Tessa Mae Harris – who work with such skill and energy on behalf of the Academy throughout the year; to the Committee and its new chair, Ian MacKenzie; to our host Edith Bowman; and to BBC Scotland, STV and Creative Scotland for their continued support of our mission. Finally, I would like to congratulate the nominees for their outstanding achievements and for upholding the gold standard that is the British Academy Scotland Awards. Your talent and vision continue to raise the bar for the industry in Scotland. Wishing you a thoroughly enjoyable evening. JANE LUSH CHAIR OF THE ACADEMY

INDUSTRY COMMENT 2016 30 years ago on 6 December 1986, Reginald Collin, Iain Smith, Graham Benson, Chris MacLean and David Bruce met at the Glasgow Film Theatre for the inaugural BAFTA Scotland screening of The Mission. It is reassuring to consider how far we’ve come this past 30 years or so. Back in the 1970s I was part of a small group of Scottish filmmakers who gathered over numerous pies and pints to plan ways to make ‘real’ films. Making films about whisky distilleries, suspension bridges and sunsets over the Western Isles, devoid of real people, was bad for our collective soul. In those days the notion of having a film industry that made feature length films about things that mattered was little more than a daft wee dream. The two most prominent film organisations at the time, Films of Scotland and The Scottish Film Council, had no energy for such things. They seemed to be resigned to the plodding status quo. We, on the other hand, more in hope than expectation were putting our thrawn suspicions to one side, and were starting to move forward in a collective spirit that had never existed before. It was that spirit that gave rise to events like ‘Filmbang’ in 1976, and the ‘Cinema and the Small Country’ conference in Edinburgh the following year. The participation of filmmakers from other countries, similar in size to our own,

10

raised the level of debate, and made us realise that our situation wasn’t so unique after all. And, guess what, we began to realise we might actually be better than we first thought. The most significant change happened, of course, when Bill Forsyth, in sheer frustration having had Gregory’s Girl turned down yet again by the Scottish Film Council, steamed ahead, with no money whatsoever, and made the now legendary That Sinking Feeling. Frustration overcame his native caution, and he jumped into the void. He just started - making a film. In doing so he gave birth to a distinctly Scots point of view that matured in Gregory’s Girl and later in Local Hero. He not only brought our national sense of the absurd to a wider screen audience, he also proved that a Scottish based filmmaker could be seen as a world class talent. He pointed us in a direction that has since been pursued by our most talented people. But above all he showed us that we should sometimes “just get on with it”. So from these hesitant beginnings, the formation of BAFTA Scotland in 1986, was a moment of great significance; proof that our daft wee dream was becoming a reality. Scotland’s filmmakers were at last being recognised, and applauded, for their

risk taking creativity, and for asserting themselves increasingly on the wider cultural landscape. It is an old Hollywood truism that ‘money follows talent’. I have no doubt that the existence of BAFTA Scotland and its celebration of our country’s talent over these many years has already improved the creative and financial fortunes of our people. I have no doubt that BAFTA Scotland through the recognition of homegrown role models, continues to build confidence in our young by bringing their achievements to wider notice and acclaim. BAFTA Scotland has significantly improved their chances of engaging with international opportunity and investment. But alongside that, the development of a sustainable industrial/commercial infrastructure in Scotland must not be forgotten. Without that, our skills and talents will not be sustainable beyond these shores. We need a robust business environment within which our creativity, and culture, can captivate the world. This of course requires continued, and increasing, strategic resourcing from the Scottish Government. But, in the spirit of Bill’s ‘just get on with it’ approach, support from the hard-pressed public purse will never be enough.

and risk money. In Scotland we have plenty of one, and not a lot of the other. There is plenty of risk investment in the world, looking to exploit innovation and creativity. It’s just not here - yet. The demand for filmed entertainment is growing worldwide, and if we work hard with an increasing number of delivery systems, our content can reach an ever widening audience like never before. To do this we filmmakers must continue to forage further afield for new markets for our work. It is essential to keep improving our entrepreneurism, to build networks of respect, trust and friendship outwith our homeland. We Scots are internationalist by instinct and we should make the most of that in these disruptive, opportunistic times. Talent begins the process; money enables it, and skills achieve it, but only within a more effective and joined up industrial system. So our daft wee dream is coming yet for a’ that. But at least we’ve proved what it can achieve. IAIN SMITH OBE

A fully functioning and healthy industry cannot be built from protective subsidy alone. It has to come from the uneasy conjunction of risk art

SIXTEEN FILMS Sixteen Films is the film production company formed by director Ken Loach and producer Rebecca O’Brien after Parallax Pictures dissolved in 2002. Writer Paul Laverty is the Associate Director and the primary function of the company has been to make films written, produced or directed by this team. Ken Loach is one of Britain’s most respected film makers with a career spanning over forty years. He was recruited by the BBC in 1963 as a television director which launched a long career directing films for television and cinema. Paul Laverty was born in Calcutta, to an Irish mother and Scottish father. With degrees in Philosophy and Law, Paul practiced as a lawyer in Glasgow before going on to write a number of screenplays directed by Ken Loach.

Rebecca O’Brien began her film life working at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. After stints and both theatre and film, her producing debut was Friendship’s Death starring Tilda Swinton and Bill Paterson. Her first film with Ken Loach was Hidden Agenda and since then they have gone on to work together on many feature films, documentary and short projects. Sixteen Films is well known for its work in supporting Scotland’s film industry, including crew, production and actors. The same team made Carla’s Song, My Name Is Joe, then, under the banner of Sixteen Films, Sweet Sixteen, The Angels’ Share and Ae Fond Kiss. All of their films have been recognised at major international film festivals, with The Wind That Shakes the Barley and I, Daniel Blake winning the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes.
