Once again, we have world class badminton in Denmark Dear all members of the badminton family around the world.

On behalf of Badminton Denmark, I am honoured and proud to welcome you to VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2024.

A year has already passed since last world class tournament in Denmark. Last year we both hosted the World Championships 2023 and VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023. The two events were both huge successes and the Danish audience together with our many international guests made a fantastic atmosphere. I hope that you will all contribute to make VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2024 even more fantastic. Bring flags, paint your faces, wear your national colours, make noise and support your favourite players the best way you can.

This tournament is the world’s second oldest international badminton tournament. The first edition was played in 1936 in Copenhagen. Now we are for the third time in Jyske Bank Arena in Odense after being in Odense Idrætshal for 13 years in a row. The last two years in Jyske Bank Arena have been amazing, and I feel confident that we will continue the success in this arena, where the tournament will be held until 2026.

In Badminton Denmark we have a tradition – we want to make it better every time. We have once again tried our best to make the badminton experience for all even better than last year, and I am confident that we will succeed.

Without doubt this couldn’t happen without our great co-operation with our event partners Odense Municipality, Destination Fyn, Visit Odense and of course our main sponsor VICTOR. I look forward to the co-operation in the coming years.

During the tournament week, Badminton Denmark is also hosting a huge youth tournament for players of all ages in the City of Odense. Thank you to the many youth players and their parents for making the tournament special, and a big welcome to the many youth players coming from abroad. You are all contributing to making this badminton week extra special.

Welcome to VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2024 - and welcome to Odense Once again, Odense has the great pleasure of hosting VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. It is both a privilege and an honour to host this prestigious tournament. Not only because it brings with it a passionate global community of fans and some of the world’s best badminton players, but because of the excitement and life it brings to our city, every year in October. I am delighted to welcome you all to Odense for a week buzzing with energy, excitement and a shared love of badminton.

When the whistle sounds on the 15th of October, it marks the beginning of this year’s VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, and the beginning of a citywide celebration. Since 2022, the tournament has taken place in the largest venue in Odense, Jyske Bank Arena. This reflects the importance of the event – and the great interest in the event. As the framework for gruelling duels and feats of technical excellence, the arena allows spectators to be seated close to the courts. This facilitates the intense and fantastic atmosphere that befits the second-oldest international tournament in the world.

As regards badminton, this year has been especially remarkable for Odense. At the beginning of August, we had the immense pleasure of celebrating Odense’s biggest sports champion, Viktor Axelsen, on his second gold medal at the Olympics. Born and raised in Odense, Viktor is an incredible ambassador for our city, inspiring us all to believe in our dreams and to work hard to achieve them.

With his two Olympic victories, Viktor Axelsen has ensured that badminton attracts attention, both in Odense and across the world.

Whether you have a dream of becoming as good as Viktor Axelsen or simply have a great fascination with the sport, VICTOR DENMARK OPEN offers a unique opportunity to see some of the greatest badminton stars in action first-hand. Welcome to VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2024 Hearty congratulations to the man from Odense who won his second Olympic gold medal, Viktor Axelsen.

The badminton community in Odense have played a vital role in nurturing this champion and you can rightfully feel proud.

The Denmark Open has long had the tradition of providing the stage for the emergence of champions. Like Axelsen, many other great players too have showcased their abilities here, inspiring not only local badminton communities, but worldwide audiences too.

We are in the final quarter of this calendar year, and the HSBC Race to Finals is picking up pace. Top players will be keen to gain ranking points as they seek qualification for the season-ending championships in Hangzhou, China. My best wishes to all players.

Fan Guide: How to Experience the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN as a Spectator

Are you unsure about when you should be at the arena? Do you want an autograph from your favorite player but don’t know how to get one?

Or are you just curious about what it’s like to be a spectator at a major tournament like the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN? We have compiled the most pressing questions and answers in this guide so that you are well-prepared.

WHEN SHOULD YOU BE THERE? Matches start at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

On Friday, we start at 12 p.m., on Saturday at 9 a.m., and on Sunday at 12 p.m. Doors open half an hour before the start on the first three days, one hour before on Friday and Saturday, and at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

There are badminton matches scheduled throughout the day, with the last matches ending in the evening. You can come whenever it suits you, so if you have work during the day, you can still catch plenty of matches.

HOW MANY MATCHES DOES THE TICKET COVER? Your ticket grants access to all matches throughout the day.

From Tuesday to Thursday, three courts are in use simultaneously. On Friday, during the quarterfinals, two courts are in use, while Saturday’s semifinals and Sunday’s finals are played on one court. This means that with your ticket, you can watch many different matches and enjoy a lot of badminton action.

WHAT CAN YOU DO BESIDES WATCHING BADMINTON? There are plenty of activities in the spectator area to keep you entertained in addition to following the matches. Last year, spectators could, for example, participate in a competition organized by former world champion Thomas Laybourn, play a duel against Hans Kristian Vittinghus, test their precision with a racket, shop for lots of badminton gear, and much more. Similar activities will be arranged this year, so check out the spectator area and listen for announcements from the hall speaker.

Additionally, you can meet several different robots in the arena.

Try your hand at tic-tac-toe against a robot or use another robot as your personal info guide. Read more about the many robots and their purpose at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN on page 50.

WHERE CAN YOU GET FOOD? In the hall’s street food area, you can find a delicious selection of food with a focus on sustainability initiatives. Therefore, the menu includes fewer dishes with beef and more meat-free alternatives. The ingredients are as local as possible and are delivered to the arena in electric vehicles.

CAN YOU GET AUTOGRAPHS AND PICTURES WITH THE PLAYERS? Yes! Autograph sessions will be arranged in the spectator area where you can get both pictures and autographs from the stars.

These sessions will be announced by the hall speaker, so stay alert if you want to secure an autograph or a picture.

If your favorite player is not participating in one of the official autograph sessions, there is still hope. Many players stop to give autographs and take pictures on their way out of the hall after their matches. So, if you stand ready by the barrier where the players pass, you might be lucky enough to catch them.

However, remember that flash photography is not allowed in the hall as it can distract the players on the court.

WHAT IS GOOD BADMINTON ATMOSPHERE ACCORDING TO THE PLAYERS? We give the floor to Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup, who provide some good advice on how to create the best badminton atmosphere in the hall.

Anders Skaarup: - The approach should be to cheer too much rather than too little. It doesn’t have to be quiet during all rallies either. One of the things we particularly enjoyed about Royal Arena and the Olympics was the great enthusiasm and joy for the game. As much as possible, let loose a bit. It doesn’t just have to be shouting a name and then clapping. There should be as much noise as possible. I think that would also be cool for the other spectators.

Kim Astrup: - We definitely get a bit more adrenaline from having thousands of spectators sitting there in Odense with us. It certainly gives us a lot of positive energy to feel that the audience is with us in the match and wants us to win.

Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Are Hungry for More

Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup’s already high level reached new heights during this past year. Yet despite the string of titles and impressive results, the Danish world-class duo is still far from satisfied.

As they put it: ‘We always compete to win.’

About the duo’s impressive streak, Kim Astrup said, “It’s been really great. It’s been nice to show over a longer period of time that we’re among the best in the world. We’ve really enjoyed that and had many great experiences over the past year and a half. We’ll see how many more are to come, but for now, we’re enjoying each success”.

Five Super 500 titles, a Super 750 title, World Championship silver, European Games gold, an Olympic semifinal, and a climb to second place in the world rankings – these are the impressive achievements of Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup in just one year. The all-Danish final at the 2023 Canada Open, which Astrup/ Skaarup won against Rasmus Kjær/ Frederik Søgaard, marked the beginning of the most successful and rewarding twelve months of their careers, elevating their already-high public profile to new heights.

The Danish duo looks back on the past year with great joy and is using this moment to reflect on their achievements.

For Astrup/Skaarup, it’s been crucial to establish themselves among the world’s best and to consistently demonstrate the high level of play they’ve long known they are capable of.

“One of the most important insights that’s been highlighted to us is that our play and form was there, we already had a good handle of things,” Skaarup added.

“When the score was eighteen-eighteen, things often didn’t go our way, but we knew it wasn’t our whole strategy that needed changing but rather our mindset in the final stages of a match. For years, we’ve lost to the best in the world with >>

a score of nineteen in the third set, so when those points start to fall in your favour instead, you quickly build confidence. It doesn’t take much to turn things around.”

Despite their impressive results and consistently high level of play over an extended period, the duo’s motivation remains as strong as ever. Astrup/Skaarup are eager to push further, and while they appreciate their achievements over the past

year, they know they can’t rest on their laurels or settle for the status quo.

Reflecting on their approach, Skaarup explained, “We’ve been hungry for years, so winning a couple of tournaments isn’t enough to satisfy us. We remain humble, knowing that every tournament matters, and we always compete to win. We need to focus on ourselves and not let anyone tell us that we’re tired or that we’ve done enough. No matter where you are in your

career, you always have to bring your best every time you step on the court.

We’ve done a great job resetting between tournaments and matches.”

The bursts of energy you get from winning a major tournament really stand out. The Royal Arena holds a special place for us.

The entire week was an incredible experience, as was the Olympics.”

Skaarup said, about the significance of the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, “This year, the Denmark Open stands alone, there’s no going to France, so it’s the perfect opportunity to achieve something big. I think the new venue setup is great, and it’s nice to have family and friends come by. People will remember if you win the Denmark Open, and we remember those who have won it, so it’s definitely a tournament we really want to win.”

From VICTOR DENMARK OPEN Debut to Quest for a Comeback

Last year, men’s singles player Magnus Johannesen made his debut at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, a tournament he had dreamed of competing in since his youth. This year, however, he won’t be competing in Odense due to a knee injury sustained earlier in the year.

Twenty-two-year-old Magnus Johannesen made his debut at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN last year, fulfilling a childhood dream. For the young Danish men’s singles player, it was the realisation of a long-held aspiration.

He said, “Competing in the Denmark Open last year was an amazing expe-

rience. It’s something you dream of in your youth while competing in the youth tournament and going to watch the stars in the evenings. So, getting to compete last year was awesome. Playing such a big tournament on home soil was a huge experience.”

Johannesen faced compatriot Viktor Axelsen during his opening match. He said, “Competing against Viktor allowed me to really understand what it takes to face the best in the world. Even though I’ve played against him in training sessions, it’s different to be out there on the court and feeling the pressure when there’s something at stake. It’s a genuine

eye-opener to what it means and how much it takes – not just the level he’s playing at, but also the mental challenge of competing on home turf against a fellow countryman and staying completely sharp.”

For Johannesen, VICTOR DENMARK OPEN is more than just another tournament. Like many other Danish badminton players, he has looked up to the greatest Danish players who have claimed trophies at home.

“It’s definitely a tournament I dream of winning someday. Seeing other Danish men’s singles players like Anders Antonsen, Viktor Axelsen, and Jan Ø.

Jørgensen win the tournament in recent years has fuelled my desire to achieve the same. It’s incredibly exciting to see them succeed on home ground.”

However, that dream will have to wait a bit longer as what was supposed to be a season of progress took an unexpected turn earlier this year. At the Singapore Open in late May, Johannesen suffered a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for an extended period. During a first-

round match against China’s Shi Yu Qi, he found himself in an unfortunate position and suddenly felt a painful twist in his knee.

An examination revealed two tears in the meniscus, necessitating surgery, which Johannesen opted for to repair the damage. This means a lengthy rehabilitation process.

He explained, “For the first couple of weeks, I could barely do anything. I wore a brace that kept my leg straight, and I could only remove it three times a day to do some exercises where I bent and straightened my leg.

“I’ve gradually been able to add a little every two to four weeks. Right now, I’m mainly focusing on strength training and knee rehabilitation, along with more stationary technique training.”

The rehabilitation process has been a significant test of patience and willpower.

“The biggest challenge is probably seeing others train and play as usual while I can’t. Especially now that tournaments

have started again after the Olympics, and I see others competing.

“I’m trying to take it one day at a time and find joy in small improvements, slowly being able to do more and more.

Watching the others train also motivates me to come back. In that sense, it’s a positive thing that I have even greater motivation than before, whereas it’s easy to get a bit burned out playing one tournament after another.”

Johannesen’s six-month rehabilitation won’t be complete until December, at which point the young Dane will focus on getting back to a regular training routine before resuming tournament play. Unfortunately, this means he’ll have to watch the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2024 from the sidelines. However, we look forward to following the young badminton player’s continued journey and eagerly anticipate seeing him back on home soil in the next edition of the tournament.

Line Kjærsfeldt on the Development of Women’s Singles Since Her Debut

It has been fourteen years since Line Kjærsfeldt made her debut as a double’s player at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. In 2012, she competed for the first time as a singles player. Read more about the development of women’s singles that she has seen during her years of participation.

“Fourteenth Denmark Open?”

When asked how it feels to be competing in her fourteenth VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, Line Kjærsfeldt checked to see if

she’d heard correctly. Then she responded, “That’s actually a bit wild.”

Line Kjærsfeldt is well-known on the badminton courts at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, which it is fair to say she’s become

quite familiar with. She has competed in the tournament since 2010, which also marked her international debut as a senior player. It was significant that this debut took place on home soil.

Line explained, “Suddenly, you were competing against the stars you had watched from the stands when you were younger. That’s really what I remember most.

I can’t actually recall any of the matches.

But it’s always very special to enter a tournament as a Dane and know there’s a familiar audience out there cheering, maybe even quite a few who’ve come to specifically see you play. That’s a truly unique experience.”

Line Kjærsfeldt’s resume not only reflects her dedication as a player, recognised for her long-standing and loyal participation at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, but also highlights her impressive achievements. The Danish women’s singles player has earned several notable results, including three national championships and two European championship bronze medals. Recently, her list of accomplishments came to include a silver medal, as Line Kjærsfeldt reached the final at the Canada Open 2024 – a strong backdrop when entering a major tournament like the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN.

She said, “A lot depends on the draw and the expectations you bring. However, setting that aside and focusing on my own performance, I believe I’ve demonstrated strong play for a while now, which might even be able to challenge some of the best in the world. I hope to bring that level to this tournament on home soil and show what kind of player I am.”

Line Kjærsfeldt’s many years of experience have provided her with keen insights into the development of women’s singles over time. In her view, the demand for versatility among women’s singles players has seen particularly steady growth.

She explained, “A lot of different types of players have emerged from various

countries. I remember that there were many Chinese competitors when I first started competing. With so many different types of players now, the matches are very fast-paced and steady. But you still need a high level of technical skill to be able to compete. So, you kind of need to have the whole package.”

Line Kjærsfeldt’s observations at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN are testament to a sport that is constantly evolving.

Players are constantly finding new ways to challenge each other. They become faster, stronger, sharper, and continue to push the boundaries of the sport. When Line Kjærsfeldt once again enters the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, it will be on the basis of hours of training unseen to the

audience that is there to enjoy sports entertainment. Right now, she is particularly focused on refining her movement and defence.

Whatever the outcome of Line Kjærsfeldt’s fourteenth VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, one thing is certain: her pleasure in competing in this tournament has not diminished over the years.

“I always very much look forward to playing the Denmark Open, precisely because it’s on home soil. It’s always such a special experience. You always want to do well. And I hope I can deliver that this year once again.”

Up the Rankings and Headed for the Big Break:

‘There are Many Firsts’

This past year, Andreas Søndergaard checked off many of his major career goals, despite still being in the early stages of his career.

The past twelve months have been transformative for Andreas Søndergaard.

Alongside his partner Jesper Toft, he has won Danish Championship gold, European Championship silver, and climbed into the top twenty-five in the world rankings. Now, the new national team player, together with Toft, will face the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN for the first time as one of four strong Danish men’s doubles duos.

Søndergaard said, “It’s a boy dream come true. I’ve been there so many times as a spectator. We’ve just competed in another Super 750 tournament, and it’s great to play in these big tournaments. But getting to compete at the Denmark Open will be truly special. It’s the tournament I’ve attended the most as a spectator”.

In just a year, Andreas Søndergaard and Jesper Toft have firmly established

themselves in the top thirty-two of the world rankings. In February, they won the VICTOR Danish Championships in Sønderborg, and in the spring, they travelled to the European Championships in Germany, bringing home a silver medal.

Things are moving fast for the duo, but Søndergaard makes sure to take time to reflect on their achievements, and the belief in their concept and project remains steadfast.

About their recent upward trajectory.

Søndergaard said, “When you sit down and think about it, things have moved very quickly, but we’ve felt deserving of it for a long time. We’ve even thought: How come this didn’t happen sooner?

We have so much belief in ourselves, but when you think about it, it has indeed progressed quickly. When people come up and congratulate us on our recent achievements, it does feel a bit overwhelming how quickly it’s happened for us.”

Søndergaard/Toft are part of an exceptionally strong men’s doubles group on the Danish national team, with no less than four pairs in the top thirty-two and another just outside. This makes for competitive and development-driven training sessions – especially leading up to major goals and tournaments like the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, where, according to the rankings, four Danish men’s doubles duos are set to defend their home court in Odense.

Søndergaard explained about the skilled Danish national men’s doubles group, “It’s only positive and incredibly exciting to be in the same group as so many talented pairs. We praise them a lot, and it started with Kim and Anders (Astrup/ Skaarup), who helped elevate us and showed the way, and this has trickled down through the ranks. No one refrains from helping or sparring with each other.

We’re five pairs and ten players, and none of us alike, so there’s a lot to learn from one another. We’re rank third in national team training, but that doesn’t mean I can’t look at William (Kryger Boe) and Christian (Faust Kjær) and be inspired by what they do well, just as I am by Kim and Anders.”

With their impressive offensive play and fearless approach to challenges and higher-ranked opponents, Søndergaard and Toft have won many matches over the past year. They are now positioned among the elite and have gained access

to the world’s biggest tournaments. So, what does the future hold for the sharp young men’s doubles pair?

Søndergaard concluded, “So far, it’s been about keeping the momentum going and breaking into the top thirty-two, which we’ve achieved. But now we also have results to defend. If I were to set some goals, we’ve marked the European Championship at home next year as a major target, an even bigger target at the Thomas Cup at home in 2026, and we also really want to compete at the World Championships in Paris next year.

These are the major championships and new experiences we’re looking forward to, including the Denmark Open, and I’m also extremely excited to play at the All England for the first time.”

Fruergaard and Thygesen Proud to See Olympic Performance Inspire Next Generation

Sara Thygesen and Maiken Fruergaard impressed at the Olympics with a quarterfinal finish, and their play is inspiring young girls in badminton clubs.

Now they enter the court one final time together at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. For many years now, Maiken Fruergaard, age twenty-nine, and Sara Thygesen, age thirty-three, have been the highest-ranked Danish women’s doubles pair in the world rankings. In Odense, they are familiar faces now, not only because they play for Odense OBK but also because they’ve

competed at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN for many years.

This summer, they also made a mark in Paris by delivering an outstanding performance, reaching the Olympic quarterfinals.

Fruergaard said, “OL was a wild experience. The hall was buzzing from day one, and it was really amazing to receive so much support and attention. It gave us a huge energy boost.”

The Danish women’s doubles team had a tough draw at the Olympics. At the time, they were ranked twenty-fifth in the world and ended up being grouped with the world’s second, tenth, and sixteenth ranked pairs. Nevertheless, they managed to win in the group, with victories in all three matches.

Thygesen said, “It was always our goal to advance from the pool, but doing it the way we did, I’m really proud that we managed to accomplish that. We were truly resilient throughout the matches and kept each other focused on our key points.”

‘Good Ambassadors for Danish Women’s Doubles’ After the Olympics, their coach, Jesper Hovgaard, described them as ‘good ambassadors for Danish women’s doubles’ and highlighted their offensive and entertaining style of play, which showcased the women’s doubles category beautifully.

In response to the praise, Thygesen said, “We want to compete in exciting and fast-paced women’s doubles that people want to watch. Not just for the audience’s sake, but because these are the matches we find most enjoyable.”

For Fruergaard and Thygesen, it is a bonus if their matches can excite those who don’t usually follow badminton, thus broadening the interest in women’s doubles.

Fruergaard said, “We’ve received a lot of feedback that it’s been really great to watch the women’s doubles. It’s a rare thing to hear because the media generally tends to be tough on this category.

So, I’m proud that we’ve helped bring it to the forefront.”

Inspiring the Next Generation As good ambassadors for the women’s doubles category, Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen have helped inspire the next generation, particularly young girls in clubs who could potentially become future women’s doubles competitors.

Fruergaard explained, “It makes me so happy to know that our performances at

the Olympics have helped inspire young girls in clubs to play women’s doubles. If we’ve inspired even just a few of them, based on some matches at the Olympics and our general style, then that makes me really proud because it means I’ve also contributed to something significant for the future of Danish badminton history.”

For young girls dreaming of playing women’s doubles at a high level, Fruergaard and Thygesen have some good advice.

Thygesen said, “I’m thirty-three, and I just performed at my absolute best at the Olympics. It’s important not to give up too quickly and to keep putting in the

hours. You should do it for the love of it, of course, but you also need to be willing to put in a lot of hard work because that’s what it takes.’”

Next up for the Danish women’s doubles team is the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, and Maiken Fruergaard hopes to see a buzzing crowd at the matches. Especially because it’s the last tournament they play together.

Fruergaard concluded, “Hopefully, a lot of people will come to watch, and maybe we can inspire even more to start playing women’s doubles. I definitely hope to see a lot of young girls from OBK there.”

‘I Guess You Could Call it a Small Dream’

Danish rising star Mads Vestergaard is set to make his debut at this year’s VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. In this article, we explore his experience transitioning to higher-level tournaments and his preparations for the mixed doubles category ahead of the event.

When Mads Vestergaard steps onto the court at Jyske Bank Arena in Odense for this year’s VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, it will mark the first time a Danish audience sees him compete at such a high level on home soil. It’s an event that not only the crowd can look forward to – Vestergaard himself has been eagerly awaiting this debut for a long time.

He said, “It’s something you watch as a young player and think, wow, I want that to be me someday, competing in front of this Danish audience. So, it means a lot to be able to participate.”

The twenty-two-year-old Dane, who competes in both mixed doubles with Christine Busch and men’s doubles with

Daniel Lundgaard, has already claimed titles at the Scottish Open, Estonian Challenge, Polish Open, and Abu Dhabi Masters. In February, Vestergaard was awarded Comet of the Year 2023 by Badminton Denmark’s sports management. Now, at this year’s VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, he can add participa-

tion in a Super 750 tournament on home soil to his résumé.

He added, “It means a lot to be able to compete on home soil in such a big tournament. It’s only in the last year that we’ve started to compete in tournaments at this level.”

While Mads Vestergaard has only just begun to take on bigger tournaments, he has already managed to achieve great results. In June 2024, Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch reached the semi-finals at the Super 750 tournament Singapore Open.

“I think we’re in a good place right now,” said Mads Vestergaard. “Towards the end of the summer, we made significant progress, playing some excellent matches in Singapore. In men’s doubles, I helped defeat the world number one, and Christine and I reached the semi-finals in mixed doubles. So, I’d say we have a

stronger belief that, on our best days, when everything is right, we can challenge and also beat some of the very best.”

Vestergaard is well aware that moving up to bigger tournaments means being challenged in new ways. Suddenly, he and his partners are entering tournaments unseeded, often facing higher-ranked opponents. This shift has influenced how he approaches each match.

Behind the Scenes of the World’s Second Oldest International Badminton Tournament

It’s not surprising if you envision white lines on green courts and badminton players diving for shuttlecocks when you think of the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. But the tournament is also much more than what happens on the badminton courts.

If you have secured a ticket to the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2024, it’s understandable if you are primarily looking forward to taking a seat in the stands and indulging in world-class badminton.

As the world’s second oldest internati-

onal badminton tournament, VICTOR DENMARK OPEN has a tradition of attracting some of the biggest stars in badminton. However, there is also a lot happening around the courts that is normally hidden from the audience. Join us behind

the scenes and meet some of the volunteers who help create the framework for the tournament when VICTOR DENMARK OPEN takes over Jyske Bank Arena in Odense.

  Mixed Zone

The sporting achievements that unfold on the courts at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN attract attention from the world press. Therefore, the tournament also has its very own Mixed Zone, where journalists and cameramen from around the world can gather around the players when they appear for interviews after their matches.

In the Mixed Zone, you can also find an example of the many different tasks handled by skilled volunteers. Vinaa Maartina is one of the volunteer interpreters in the Mixed Zone who works to translate and facilitate communication between journalists and players who speak Indonesian.

“It’s been a totally new experience for me because I love sports, and especially badminton. All this time, I’ve been an online spectator or coming to the stadiums, but now I get to technically talk to my favorite players that I’ve only been seeing on TV and from far away. It’s been awesome.

Being the bridge between the media and the players has been great.”

 Players Lounge

The Players Lounge is an area where players can stay and relax when they are not busy playing matches and trying to advance in the tournament. Here, too, a team of volunteers works tirelessly to create the best atmosphere for the players, including making sure they can get something to eat. One of the volunteers helping to ensure a good experience for the tournament’s players is Anne Olesen. When asked what it means to her to volunteer at a tournament like VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, Anne Olesen emphasizes one thing in particular.

“I have three children who all play badminton, and we spend a lot of time in a badminton hall. For me, it’s that feeling of also giving something back to the sport that gives us so much,” she says.

A badminton player’s day at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN begins long before they face their opponent on one of the courts in the Main Hall. The Practice Hall is an area where players can prepare before stepping onto the court, with everything this entails, including various warm-up routines and rituals. It is also here that shoes are tied one last time, and muscles are kept warm a little longer if the match on the court they are scheduled to play on goes into a surprising third set.





VICTOR DENMARK OPEN Brings Robots onto the Court

It was not just the world’s best badminton players gracing the courts at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. The tournament also featured several robots that interacted with both players and audience, creating a unique experience for everyone in attendance in Odense.

As you stepped into Jyske Bank Arena in Odense for the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, something stood out. Among the green badminton courts and rows of spectators, several robots made their debut at the tournament. One robot assisted players by carrying their bags to and from the

court. Another handed out shuttlecocks to the players, while a third one in the audience area allowed spectators to play tic-tac-toe.

These technological innovations are more than just gimmicks. They reflect

Odense’s position as one of the world’s leading robotics hubs. The city has become a global centre for robot technology, particularly in the field of collaborative robots, which enable humans and robots to work side by side.

At the same time, the robots at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN represent a desire to position the tournament as an innovative and forward-thinking sporting event.

According to Brian Bach Moesgaard, Event Director at Badminton Denmark, the decision to integrate robots into VICTOR DENMARK OPEN was driven by a wish to differentiate it as an innova-

tive and technologically advanced tournament.

Moesgaard said, “The potential for incorporating robots is huge. Robots can contribute to entertainment and audience interaction, creating a futuristic atmosphere that makes VICTOR DENMARK OPEN memorable and stand out from

other tournaments. It adds an extra dimension to the overall experience for both spectators and players”.

Positive Reception from Players and Audience The presence of robots at last year’s VICTOR DENMARK OPEN was met with enthusiasm from both players and spectators.

The event director explained, “The reception was positive. Both players and the audience were fascinated and excited to see technology integrated in such an innovative way. The players also responded well to the robots we integrated backstage in the Players Lounge and Mixed Zone”.

By blending tradition and technology, the tournament creates a unique experience that honours old traditions while introducing groundbreaking elements.

Moesgaard added, “Integrating technology in this way tells a story of the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN being a pioneer, where tradition and innovation go hand in hand, and that’s what we aim for.

We enjoy being first movers in the badminton world. Time will tell how other tournaments take these new ideas and make them their own”.

Future Technology at Badminton Tournaments?

The knowledge gathered from incorporating robots at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023 have been both positive and informative.

“It gave us insight into how technology can be integrated without disrupting the sporting atmosphere,” the event director said. “Based on these experiences, we are strongly considering expanding the use of technology at future events, possibly with more robots or other innovative solutions that could enhance both the practical and entertainment aspects of the event.”

In collaboration with Destination Fyn, Badminton Denmark is looking forward to continuing to explore the boundaries of how technology can create unique experiences for both players and the audience at badminton tournaments.

More waste sorting and recycling We make an effort to sort waste and recycle at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. We have a special focus on avoiding plastic waste and collecting plastic bottles for recycling. To recycle as much waste as possible, we have set up waste stations in the arena. Thank you for sorting your waste!

More reuse - less consumption We aim to reuse as much as possible and discard as little as possible at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. Both banners, flooring, and clothing are reused after the tournament. Furthermore, the shuttlecock’s journey does not come to an end when the players want a new one. They are collected and continue their journey in the local clubs that have volunteered during the tournament.

More climate-friendly food The food we serve at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN is more climate-friendly than usual. We offer fewer meat-dishes and more meat-free options for players, volunteers, and spectators. The ingredients are as local as possible and arrive at the arena in electric vehicles.

More sustainable transportation We are pleased to gather so many people for VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, but the carbon dioxide emissions increase when many people drive. Your choice of transportation helps reduce the carbon footprint. Thanks to you who cycle, take the tram, train, bus – or make sure to fill up the car.

Greener accommodation Even when we sleep, we do what we can to contribute to the green transition.
