A GREAT WELCOME TO THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 IN KOLDING Badminton Denmark has been hosting this championship twice before in Herning in 1995 and 2008. We are now looking forward to arranging this event for the third time - now here in Sydbank Arena, Kolding. We are sure it will be a well and perfectly arranged event in close cooperation with Sport Event Denmark, Kolding Municipality, Trekantomraadet and Kolding Badminton Klub. The European Championships takes place after a great year for Badminton Denmark as we peaked especially with The Thomas Cup victory and two medals at the Olympics.

sure - in spite of that and in spite of home ground - that many quality and world class players from all over Europe will give their best performances to prevent Denmark from repeating that success. Welcome to all players, managers, coaches and technical officials. A special welcome to all the volunteers who make it possible to get through an event like this. I hope to see a lot of spectators in the Sydbank Arena where there will be world class badminton to watch. Good luck to everyone.

Denmark has 24 players participating in the European Championships and many of them represent a lot of victories and medals in the past but there are also players of the future. At last year´s European Championships Denmark won 4 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals but I am

WELCOME TO KOLDING Some of our guests may never have visited Kolding before, though it is easy enough to find. Kolding is located in the centre of Denmark, in the Triangle Region, which is Denmark’s growth centre and driver within production. It is one of the regions in Northern Europe with the highest growth and influx rates, and it houses a large and varied business community. And this is where you find Kolding. Denmark has strong and proud badminton traditions, both in the women’s and the men’s category, just as a targeted effort is being made in the youth development. Therefore, Kolding Municipality and the Triangle Region of Denmark support the European Championship 2017, and we are used to welcoming international guests. So you can look forward to a great stay. Most athletes associate Kolding with handball, but in recent years we have hosted several large international championships. We hope this experience will benefit the players, officials and audience during the European Championships. Naturally, we would also like to thank Badminton Denmark and the Triangle Region for their collaboration on the European Championships 2017. In addition, Kolding is known for offering room for creativity and for pursuing your ambitions in life. Utilising the many opportunities within design to

create a great product or to implement innovative design processes facilitates development of benefit to you and to your fellow citizens. In Kolding we experience, think and learn about design at the university, the Design City district and Kolding Design School. Even in day care, our children grapple with design and innovation and develop skills that are challenged and further developed in school. All matches are played at the Sydbank Arena not far from the city centre, ensuring that both the audience and players may get a chance to experience our great city. Because Kolding is not just one of the best sports cities in the country: Kolding is a metropolis within shopping, and people travel far to do their shopping here. Both the city centre and the district centred around the shopping centre Kolding Storcenter offer a wide range of shops and cafés. Our great tourist attractions – the royal castle Koldinghus and Trapholt Museum of Modern Art and Design – are visited by around a quarter of a million guests every year. So you can’t go wrong, if you have a couple of hours to spend. I wish you a happy stay – and hope to see you again in Kolding and the Triangle Region. Jørn Pedersen Mayor of Kolding

WELCOME TO THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 IN KOLDING DEAR BADMINTON FRIENDS Welcome to Denmark! For the first time, the city of Kolding will be hosting a European Championships, and it is my greatest pleasure to welcome all our badminton friends and fans to the 26th edition of the European Championships (#EC17). Badminton Europe´s most prestigious event has returned to Denmark, where the 15th and 21st editions were hosted in Herning not far from Kolding, in 1996 and 2008. This year, we welcome all our European 2016 Olympic medalists after the most successful Olympics for Europe in the history of our sport. Joining them is a new generation of players aiming to medal in 2020 in Tokyo and battling for European medals this year. I am, personally, looking forward to the interesting matches that are awaiting us the next five days.

I want to express my gratitude to Badminton Denmark for organizing these high-level championships. They are, as one of Europe’s three Superseries organizers, extremely experienced and skillful as organizers in putting up a great event, which you all will experience here first hand. On behalf of Badminton Europe, we wish to share our appreciation for the local organizers, volunteers and officials. Also, thank you to our loyal official equipment supplier and partner, YONEX, for the top quality you always bring to our events, and likewise to the many event partners and sponsors without which these championships would not be possible. To all athletes, I wish you the best of luck, a fair championship and a great experience to treasure for years to come! Enjoy your stay in Kolding.

Denmark was crowned the winner at our most recent team event, the 2017 European Mixed Team Championships (#EMTC17), in Lubin. A team performance that clearly showed that Denmark has no intentions of slowing down as Europe’s leading badminton nation. It will be exciting to follow them on home soil, in front of their many fans here in Kolding.

Yours in Badminton,

THE CORRECT FOCUS CAN SECURE A RECORD FOR CHRISTINNA PEDERSEN AND KAMILLA RYTTER JUHL

Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl can claim the honour of being the most European Championships winning Danes ever, but it requires that the first seed women’s doubles show a peak in their performance and keep their focus on court. Because competition is fierce, and the expectations from the surroundings are high. BY J O N A S K I L D E G A A R D

With six European Championships gold medals, Kamilla Rytter Juhl holds the records as the most winning Danish badminton player ever in the European Championships. But if everything works out for her women’s doubles partner, Christinna Pedersen, together they will be able to play their way towards seven European Championships gold medals, and thus share the record. Right now Christinna Pedersen holds five European Championships gold medals, but if she can win

European Championships gold for the third consecutive time with Joachim Fischer and for the fourth time in a row with Kamilla Rytter Juhl, she will offset the record. But although Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl are the favourites to win the European Championships, they’re still in for a tough championship. - It’s not a walk in the park to win the European Championships, and we are aware that we must be close to our maximum to defeat the best European

women’s doubles, who will be ready to challange us. It would be something else if we were great favourites and able to win while playing at 70 percent, but we must peak and hit our best game to beat the other doubles, Christinna Pedersen says.

EXPECTATIONS FROM THE SURROUNDINGS At the European Championships in 2012, 2014 and 2016 Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl managed to deliver the good badminton for which they are known, and it meant gold medals in all three championships. Thus, they lived up to the expectations of the surroundings and their own ambitions to win medals of the finest calibre. For Superseries tournaments, the expectations of the surroundings and the ambitions of the double itself are also high, but it is rarely considered a disaster, if they fail to win the tournament. The expectations are a great deal higher when they are taking part in the European Championships, and it’s a pressure that Pedersen and Rytter Juhl are working on handling. - Because of our world ranking, this is a tournament that we often are favourites to win. It is a role that we are aware of, because it is us who are being chased by the other doubles. We are the ones who the other doubles want to beat. But I think we’re good at talking about this before the tournament and during the tournament, because it is a pressure, and in the eyes of many, we can only fail if we do not win, Christinna Pedersen says and continues.

THE FOCUS MUST BE IN THE RIGHT PLACE TO ACHIEVE THE RECORD Pedersen and Rytter Juhl enjoy playing at home in front of the Danish audience and they are passionated about providing a good experience to their followers, but through the years of participating in the Yonex Denmark Open presented by Danisa, they have learned that before anything else, a strong and full focus is required. - When we play at home, we can come to think that now we must do extra good, to show the Danish audience how good we are. This is also something we talk about every year before Denmark Open that sometimes we must be careful that our focus is not in the wrong place. We do want to show that we are good, but we are only good if we focus on what happens on court, 33-year-old Kamilla Rytter Juhl says.

the European Championships, where we can only do what is expected of us: to win a gold medal. This is not how we see it, and hopefully this was also evident last year when we won, of course, it was a relief, but it was also a great pleasure to win the European Championships. To achieve the same joy of winning this year, Denmark’s best women’s doubles have been preparing for several scenarios in cooperation with the National Head Coach Kenneth Jonassen, who acts as their personal trainer. - Mentally we are preparing by talking a lot with Kenneth, about the thoughts that may arise during the championships matches. There may well be a bit of butterflies in the stomach, if we are in a semifinal and simply need to win, and in that case, it may well be that the legs are not acting quite as you’d like them to. But just the fact that we’ve talked to Kenneth about it means that he can say that we must focus on moving our legs, rather him giving us complicated tactics, Kamilla Rytter Juhl says, and then being complemented by her partner. - It is also about seeing the tournament in a proper light, otherwise it can drain our powers, instead of being an awesome experience. Cause if, in the eyes of many, not winning the gold medal would be a failure, then it would be a heavy burden. We are trying to turn this around, because we see it as something positive that we are at the top of the agenda, since it indicates that we have delivered good results and we are attentive to the little pitfalls that comes with being the favourites, Christinna Pedersen says.

Precisely that, to stay focused on the game also means that their joint record opportunities to be the most European Championships winning Danes ever are not located at the front of their minds. Still, there is room for them to joke about Christinna Pedersen’s ability to equal the record as the most European Championships gold winning Dane ever, an honour which Kamilla Rytter Juhl has had sole ownership of until now. - Kamilla has said that she is resentful that she stopped with mixed doubles, since this has allowed me to gain on her record. Usually we are not the ones to keep statistics about how much we have won, but it’s funny and crazy to think that Kamilla can either keep the record or that we can extend the lead together. But it is going to be really hard in both women’s and mixed doubles to win the gold, since everyone wants to beat us, Christinna Pedersen remarks. Although it is difficult, there is no doubt that the women’s double will do everything to ensure gold medals at the European Championships in Kolding. - It’s great to be at the top of the podium and hear the national anthem. It’s always something that gives you the goose bombs, even if we have been favourites to win. Winning is somewhat of an art form, even though you are favourites, this is a role we take very seriously, Kamilla Rytter Juhl says.

RUSSIAN MEN’S DOUBLES AIM TO RECLAIM GOLD MEDALS IN KOLDING Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov has established themselves as one of the best men’s doubles in the world. This was clearly proven, when they won the 2016 edition of All England. Another resume highlight for the two is the title as European Champions of 2014, a title they are very keen on reclaiming. But actually it was a mere coincidence that the two came to play badminton together. BY K R I S T I N E L I V L U N D - P E D E R S E N

The situation does not look very fierce, but the subsequent scenes does. Ivan Sozonov is in pain on the floor grabbing his achilles tendon during the semi finals at the European Championships last year. The game continues until the rally is finished, and a doctor is called on court. Subsequently, he attempts to play on. Desperately wanting to defend his European Championship gold medal. But it is soon clear, that he must give up and say his thanks to opponents Anders Skaarup Rasmussen and Kim Astrup Sorensen. Eventually, he leaves the arena in France in a wheelchair. His Achilles tendon is raptured. - We could not defend the title last year because I got injured, and due to this, we really want to win the European Championships this year. It would mean a lot to both us and our country, Ivan Sozonov remarks. It was a terrible injury, but the 27-year-old Russian recovered in record time and was together with his partner, Vladimir Ivanov, ready to play in the Olympics in Rio. Thus, they are now ready to try to regain their gold medal at the European Championships in Kolding.

BADMINTON PLAYER BY CHANCE That Ivan Sozonov was to become a great badminton player was not written in the stars. He grew up in a village near the Ural mountains far from the capital city of Moscow, a village where there were not many badminton players. Close by, in another city Vladimir Ivanov was living, and although the two were good

friends, a long time would have to pass before the two began playing badminton together. - My father took part in many different sports. I remember it as if he went to a new type of sports every single day. But when I was six years old, he took me to the sports centre, for me to see what playing badminton was like. Later on, he has told me, that he could clearly see that I would be a good player right from the moment when I first laid my hand on the racket, says Sozonov. His father was not alone in believing, that he had a special talent for badminton. A trainer from Moscow had also noticed his qualities. - This guy, the coach, he was one of the best in Russia, and he called my parents when I was 14 years-old and asked if I would move to Moscow to play professional badminton. I had only an hour to make my decision, he explains with a smile. Thus, at age 15 he moved to Moscow on his own. Here he was after a few years coupled up with his old childhood friend in a tournament, and the two did so well that to this day, they still play together. - We only train together for about a week every month since we live with quite some distance from each other. But then we travel the world together and play many tournaments, Ivan Sozonov says.

COMPLETELY ON TOP One of these trips took them to Birmingham. Just six weeks before the achilles tendon rapture, the two Russian badminton players made it all the way to the top, when they won the All England in 2016. A huge triumph which they celebrated with the legendary victory dance, which is likely to be remembered by many. The victory ensured Ivanov and Sozonov a place in history as the first Russians to win the legendary tournament. - When I go into the arena in Birmingham and see Court 1, I can clearly recall everything from last year. It is one of the most emotional moments of our career, and I will never forget it, says Ivan Sozonov. But even though they won one of the world’s largest badminton tournaments, they could still easily walk

undisturbed around the streets of Russia. A country where badminton does not yet receive a lot of attention, but where the tendencies are nevertheless heading in the right direction. - We only got brief attention from the Russian media, and maybe we gave ten minutes of interviews in total. Cause only one week after our victory, a football tournament started, and then our victory was forgotten. But awareness of badminton in our country is much higher than it was ten years ago, so maybe it will become better and better, Sozonov explains with a smile. If yet another European Championship gold medal will cause the Russian attention to the rise is hard to say, but it is certain that Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov will do what they can to win it.

Men

- Min far spillede mange forskellige slags sport.

badminton.

HAS GIVEN ME… Carolina Marin from Spain is one of the best women’s singles in the world and she has won both the World Championships and the Olympics. Now she is in Kolding to defend her title as European Champion in women’s singles. We have talked to her about what badminton has given her. BY K R I S T I N E L I V L U N D - P E D E R S E N

- Badminton has given me everything. It’s my life. I have grown up playing many hours and I dedicated all that I have to the sport, but it has also given me back so much. - I started to play badminton when I was a child. I went with my best friend Laura to her training session and it surprised me a lot. The racket was different to the others that I knew and I was deeply impressed with the shuttlecock. Few days later I told my parents that I wanted to play that sport and then they let me start to play - Everyone probably could say that the best moment is when you are playing matches on the court during a tournament. But behind it there are a lot of training sessions, many hours of hard work. You must also realize this type of things, because it occupies most of the time. I usually train about six or eight hours, so if you don’t like that different moments, you can’t play this game. - The biggest motivation that I have is to enjoy what I do. I’m lucky because I do what I love. I think that if I wouldn’t like what I do, I never could reach this position. - Being away from home was at the beginning very difficult, because I left home when I was just 14 years. Now it’s normal, I am used to travelling a lot. I go home (Huelva) when I have a few days off and I like to be with my family and my friends. And I take that time to rest and too stop thinking about

anything. I can go just two or three times in a year, but I try to enjoy it to the fullest. - It’s an honor and a big responsibility to be a main person of the sport in my Country. It’s incredible to win what I have won, but if that serves to make the sport bigger in my country the happiness is even greater. - It’s an incredible sport: It’s explosive but also very tactical, it forces you to be very good technically too. In my opinion it is one of the most complete sports that exist. - My best experience on court is the gold medal in the Olympics. There were so much emotions after a lot of work from my team and me. I still couldn’t realize what I’ve done, I think I will need many years. Off court I like the moment, after the game, when you have won and you analyze what you have done. It’s very important to learn about the game, that’s one of the things that makes you better.

BADMINTON
