UW journalism professor dies at 64 James Baughman’s humor, dedication to students will be missed

University of Wisconsin journalism professor James Baughman died Saturday morning of lung cancer at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, according to an email from the School of Journalism.

Baughman was 64 years old and was an instructor at UW since 1979, most recently teaching courses through the School of Journalism in history of mass communication, creative nonfiction and literary journalism. A specialist in the history of American journalism, Baughman was also involved in the UW History Department.

As an educator committed to both his areas of study and his students, Baughman continued teaching his two journalism classes this semester up until the day he entered the hospital a little more than two weeks ago.

Baughman’s commitment to students extended beyond the classroom, he also

previously served as an advisor to The Badger Herald Board of Directors.

On Wednesday, Mayor Paul Soglin proclaimed Saturday March 26, 2016 as James Baughman Day in Madison for “the love and intellectual passion he has inspired in his current and former students, and for his contributions to scholarship, history, journalism and education,” according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Baughman, an Ohio native, could always be found roaming around the fifth floor of Vilas Hall offering journalism students career advice, Ohio chocolate, book and newspaper suggestions and offhand bits of humor on topics ranging from cat care to 17th century American history. His sense of humor, scholarship, dedication to all of his students and overall presence will be missed.

The memorial service for Baughman will be held Friday, April 8 at 2 p.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church on 944 E. Gorham St.

ASM resolution could ban supplementary materials for classes Initiative would include iClickers, programs like TopHat, MasteringChemistry in effort to lower costs for students

A recent student-led initiative at the University of Wisconsin seeks to reduce and ban supplementary materials students are often required to purchase in addition to textbooks for classes.

The textbook affordability resolution includes language that would ban iClickers as well as programs like Tophat and MasteringChemistry, Colin Barushok, member of Student Services Finance Committee and co-author of the resolution, said. These materials are required purchases to receive a grade in many UW courses.

“The issue is very uncontroversial because we do not need to convince people that this makes sense,” Barushok said. “We just need people to know about it and jump on board.”

Associated Students of Madison passed the resolution March 3 and it is now on the Faculty Senate agenda. Students are currently trying to raise awareness about the resolution throughout campus.

UW has been trying to address the problem already, Steven Cramer, vice provost for teaching and learning, said.

Cramer said UW has negotiated

university-wide contracts with outside companies to provide services at a cheaper rate for students. While the resolution does not fully address the problem, it is a step in the right direction, he said.

“Right now many of these products, such as mastersinchemistry.com, are at a department level and that product has very little tie to the university,” Cramer said. “We are looking for much more integrated set of tools that are more within the University System [and] within student digital environment, where we are in a better position to negotiate terms.”

UW is also looking to utilize digital tools, such as Canvas, to meet supplementary needs in a cost-effective way for students, Cramer said.

UW is also looking at more fair and equitable ways to incorporate these additional classroom costs into students’ financial aid packages, he said.

UW staff will spend the next several months reviewing system policies that could make it difficult for UW to provide some of these services. But it remains unclear whether the policies must be changed or whether it is a matter of interpretation, Cramer said.

“Textbook affordability impacts

The way students are learning is changing as they incorporate software tools and homework sets in addition to textbooks, Cramer said. The challenge is that students must now buy the textbook and the software and students have no choice in paying these additional fees, he said.

Twentyfive years in, UWPD Chief talks challenges, struggles on job Sue Riseling reflects on changes to department, importance of maintaining nonviolent environment to promote exchange of ideas

In 1991, when Sue Riseling became police chief, University Wisconsin Police Department only had a handful of computers, still took polaroid pictures and had several officers who carried revolvers in their holsters.

A lot has changed in 25 years.

While technology and the generation of students that have passed through the university’s doors have evolved, so have the challenges the institution faces.

Riseling said UW is facing more challenges at a higher rate now than ever before.

One of the biggest challenges UW faces as an institution now is the level of incivility that has gone beyond being simply rude. It is a level that has become criminal and physical in the area of sexual assault, Riseling said.

With the recent series of racial and religious bias incidents, whether or not they are due to a complete ignorance, Riseling said these incidents all start with the fundamental lack of respect for other

people and how they think or feel.

In the case of sexual assault, people have taken this lack of respect even further by not listening to someone when they say no, or by taking advantage of someone when they are passed out, she said.

“I think we will continue to face the sexual assault challenge, I think it is very difficult for survivors and it is very difficult for the university to figure out how ... to reduce the amount of sexual violence going on,” Riseling said.

But this notion of respectfully listening and understanding the multiple sides of a problem is still something people struggle with today, she said.

In her book, “A View From the Interior: Policing the Protests at the Wisconsin State Capitol,” Riseling considers the value of freedom of speech from her experiences policing the Act 10 protests.

Riseling said her book centers on the value of freedom of speech and how people need to understand freedom of speech is more than just sharing their opinion, but about listening to others share theirs as well.

While freedom to express one’s own opinion sounds great, in practice, the act is sloppy and can become physically violent, Riseling said. It is the police’s role to help facilitate an environment in which people can have an open discussion and be frank about the challenges others are facing.

Democracy is not meant to give one person’s voice over another person’s, it’s supposed to be a give-and-take in which a person is listening to what the other person has to say — not just waiting for their turn to talk, she said.

The police’s role is to keep an environment in which all of those things can happen and to ensure that environment does not breakdown so people can keep doing what they need to, Riseling said.

“We set the table, but we don’t eat the meal. Folks have to eat the meal — we are there to ensure that everyone can do what they need to do in a way that results in no one getting physcially hurt,” she said.

Though Riseling said the police may create a physically safe environment, it is difficult to create an emotionally safe one.

It’s hard for police to try to prevent people

from using hurtful words because it is not up to them to regulate what people say, she said.

Riseling stressed the importance of creating a nonviolent environment, not only on campus but around the nation. A safe environment would allow people to exchange ideas more openly and peacefully in hopes to invoke more positive energy among one another, she said.

As she looks back at her years at Wisconsin, one of the main reasons Riesling said she’s stayed in Wisconsin for so long is because of the students.

Since she’s been police chief, more than 220,000 degrees have been confirmed at University of Wisconsin — something Riseling said is “pretty cool.”

The students are what make the job fun, Riseling said. It’s fun to watch the various generations that have passed through this university and see what they will grow to become, she said.

“I think it’s a fun place to go to school and it’s a fun place to work, it’s been a really big honor to be police chief for this long,” Riseling said.

Supreme Court election will help determine state’s political landscape Incumbent Bradley runs against Kloppenburg; UW expert says students should consider issues of transparency, corruption in government

Buried amid the presidential primary and local elections in April is the state Supreme Court race; as the highest court in the state, the Supreme Court holds the power to make decisions that can impact campus life.

This election cycle, incumbent Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Bradley will face Appeals Court Judge JoAnne Kloppenburg.

Here is what students need to know to navigate the elections and how it can affect campus life.

From landmark rulings like Act 10 to voter ID laws, the Wisconsin Supreme Court serves an important role in state government. The court theoretically acts as a non-partisan check against legislative overreach, but some say the reality of it is different.

What the Supreme Court does

Howard Schweber, University of Wisconsin expert in judicial elections, said the courts are responsible for hearing legal challenges to statewide laws. For example, recent challenges were made to laws that now require voters to show a Wisconsin photo ID prior to voting and

dismantled public and private unions.

Even if student voters don’t care about this aspect of the court, Schweber said students should care and know about the legal body’s role of policing the government.

“Issues of transparency in government and corruption — I’m not sure these are things students think about, but I certainly wish they would,” Schweber said.

The court today

Schweber said 10 years ago, Wisconsin was considered a “clean government,” but dishonesty in the courts has since led to what he called “legal corruption.”

Laws now permit conflicts of interest whereby investigators can receive funds from the target of their investigation, Schweber said. This, in contrast to the traditional sense of corruption, is where money changes hands behind closed doors, he said.

“The justices themselves have received large sums of money from the very people who were the targets of investigations that they shut down,” Schweber said. “There is a whole circle of sleaze happening.”

Ald. Zach Wood, District 8, said he also thinks

the status of the courts as a non-partisan policing entity has eroded in the past decade. He pointed to Bradley recently fundraising with Republican legislators.

On March 14, a Bradley fundraiser featured several sitting Republican senators as speakers such as Sen. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills. Gov. Scott Walker previously appointed Bradley to lower court positions and defended her against criticisms of an opinion piece she wrote as a student in which she posited that AIDS victims deserved no sympathy, among other things.

Kloppenburg on the other hand, while supported by Democrats, has managed to avoid overtly partisan fundraising efforts.

The existence of a super majority within the state Legislature means the main enforcer of government accountability is now the state Supreme Court, making the court’s deterioration especially troubling, Wood said.

How the court affects students

The court is also important because of its role in settling appeals on state laws.

One example of the Supreme Court’s influence on student life includes the upholding of reductions to landlord-tenant protections, Wood

said. The Legislature recently approved a bill that allows landlords to evict tenants for any sort of “criminal activity,” which could include noise violations stemming from a party.

While presently there are no momentous decisions awaiting the Supreme Court, Schweber said questions on access to abortion and other health issues will almost certainly be entertained in the not-so-distant future.

The Supreme Court also deals with more obscure areas of state law such as product liability and insurance law, Schweber said. Despite not receiving much attention, these areas of law are still important should anyone find themselves pursuing a legal suit, he said.

“The state Supreme Court rules on all questions of state law,” Schweber said. “So the make up of the court and the attitude of the court will have effect across the board.”

Ultimately, the Supreme Court will likely not affect students to the same extent as funding changes by the state government, Schweber said.

But if students wish to live in Wisconsin for any length of time, they should care about the court because of its power to determine the character of the state, he said.

The election is April 5.

UW researchers discover new technique for tracking cells that kill cancer Non-radioactive isotope Flourine-19 has been effective in labeling, following up on natural killer cells

A study from researchers at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center has laid out a new way to monitor the progress and success of cancer treatment practices.

The study was done in response to flaws in immunotherapy practices, which use parts of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Christian Capitini, Carbone Cancer Center member and pediatrics assistant professor at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, authored the study.

“When we inject cell therapies in cancer, we don’t really have a good way of tracking cells after they’re injected,” Capitini said.

Capitini’s team experimented with MRI techniques to track “natural killer” cells after they were injected with fluorine-19, a nonradioactive, naturally occurring isotope.

Natural killer cells, which are key players in immunotherapy, appear in around 5 percent of people’s peripheral blood cells, he said.

“They basically go around the body and look for virally infected cells, and it’s thought

that they kill spontaneous development of cancer,” Capitini said.

Currently, most methods used to track cells involve radioisotopes because that method is more sensitive. While special MRI techniques can pick up fluorine-19, radioisotopes are identified with nuclear imaging, according to Sean Fain, study co-author, Carbone Cancer Center member and medical physics professor.

To pick up a signal with nuclear imaging, around 1,000 to 2,000 cells need to be traceable.

For an MRI to track cells labeled with flourine, there must be around 10,000 to 30,000 of them, Fain said.

But radioisotopes are not without their own problems. They typically decay in a number of hours, so the cell can’t be tracked for long periods of time using that method. Capitini said they’re also more difficult to locate. “[With radioisotopes] you can see a big splotch of where your cells are, but you don’t know exactly what organ or what area they’re in; you just know in general where they are geographically,” Capitini said. “For example, if you have a tumor in your brain, with radioisotopes, you would see a signal in your head, but you wouldn’t know if it’s actually

in the brain tumor or just in your brain. With an MRI scan, you’d be able to distinguish the two.”

Fain said another advantage of using MRI is that it doesn’t use radioisotopes, so it’s more attractive for patients who are sensitive to radiation risk, especially children.

Tracking these cells is important to help doctors understand why immunotherapy doesn’t work in some patients, Capitini said.

“Is it just because the cells don’t kill [the tumor]? Or is it because they can’t find it?

The goal is to use MRI as a guide to help you figure out if they found the tumor or how long they’re surviving after you inject them,” he said.

In their process, the team first took human natural killer cells from regular blood and grew them in a lab to create a larger population. Those cells were incubated with fluorine-19, which was later taken up by the cells. Then they put tubes of those cells in an MRI spectrometer that was specifically designed to detect fluorine atoms, according to the study.

After proving they could see the natural killer cells in an MRI machine, the next step

was to test the method in a living organism.

The group used mice, which are a common starting point for many laboratory experiments. Immune-deficient mice were used in this study because their immune systems don’t reject human cells, Capitini said.

The team tried two methods: first, injecting natural killer cells directly into a tumor, and second, injecting intravenously. So far, direct injection has been the most successful, Fain said.

Unfortunately, this is the lesser-preferred method, he said. To do a direct injection, the tumor needs to be relatively close to the surface, and there are certain parts of the body — like the brain — where injecting directly can be risky.

“The use of imaging is pretty important to enable monitoring therapy and to establish whether certain approaches to immunotherapy are working better than others,” Fain said. “I think everyone in the field of cancer imaging is racing right now to try and provide a means to image cell trafficking, but it’s uncertain right now which technique will be preferred and whether we’ll get there.”

Photographer seeks to show ‘Faces of the Fight’ behind anti-abortion protests Madisonian Wendi Kent has traveled across country in effort to expose pro-life activists who target clinics

One Madisonian pro-choice activist is using her camera to bring attention to anti-abortion protesters who often go unseen.

Since 2014, photographer Wendi Kent has traveled across the U.S. photographing antiabortion protesters for her “Faces of the Fight” project, which aims to expose protesters who target patients outside abortion clinics.

Kent began photographing protesters after seeing a disturbing, wanted-style poster made by anti-abortion protesters that featured the name, title and picture of one of her friends — a journalist — along with those of an abortion provider and a clinic escort.

Kent said she found this “name-and-shame” tactic is not uncommon among anti-abortion protesters, and the individuals who violate the privacy of pro-choice individuals in the name of their cause are themselves completely anonymous more often than not.

“This has been done in some very vague ways,

but also in some very blatant, intimidating ways,” she said. “I realized that I didn’t know who these people were.”

In addition, Kent began to realize that most images of anti-abortion protesters news sources use tend to be nondescript and vague.

Kent said her findings inspired her to do something about the uneven distribution of publicity between the two sides of the issue.

“Every time I read something with regard to reproductive justice, the only images that I ever see of protesters are these stock photos that have been used forever,” Kent said. “I realized that one way I could be an effective activist is by using my photography skills to get images out there that aren’t normally seen. That includes the faces of the protesters who harass women and companions outside of abortion clinics across the country.”

Kent funds her trips both out-of-pocket and through donations. She said she uses a network of clinic escorts, activists and journalists she’s befriended in her career to connect herself with new escorts and find new clinics to visit.

In addition to Kent’s outreach, clinics with knowledge of Kent’s activism often reach out to her

to request her presence, she said.

Kent said the observed impact of her work upon protesters has varied wildly from clinic to clinic.

“Just me being there can change the protesters’ behavior,” Kent said. “Sometimes it’ll ramp them up and sometimes it makes them a little quieter and they back off a little bit.”

The long-term effects of Kent’s work following her departure from a given clinic also vary, she said. Some clinics have reported no change in the behavior of their protesters while others have seen protesters become angrier and more aggressive as a result of Kent’s visits.

Kent said she is hopeful her photographs will ultimately deter protesters from harassing patients, but she thinks it will take a while for her work to truly have an effect on protesters.

“It’s part of my goal; it’d be great if these people saw themselves or if their friends saw them and tried to discourage them from going out there,” Kent said. “But I don’t think it’s going to be an immediate effect. I think it might be something that we can see chill out over the long-term.”

Kent said one of the biggest positive impacts of Faces of the Fight has been an influx of pro-choice

activism.

Many of Kent’s readers have found themselves inspired by the clinic escorts often shown in her photos and volunteered to protect patients themselves, she said.

“Many, many clinic escorts have been born from this project,” Kent said. “I’ve had to refer several people to their local clinic escort groups because they’ve seen these photos and they want to help.”

Kent has also started volunteering as a clinic escort herself in New Jersey, where she and her partner, a University of Wisconsin mathematics professor, are currently living temporarily while he attends the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

Kent said she is passionate about showing the world the largely unseen strife surrounding reproductive freedom and will continue to do so through the project.

“It’s important for people to realize that reproductive justice issues are very closeted because of the shame and stigma surrounding abortion,” Kent said. “You really don’t know anything about what’s going on unless you inject yourself into that world.”

Basking in double wins in Alaska and Washington and speaking to thousands, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vermont, exuded the confidence of a Democratic presidential candidate on the road to

victory at the Alliant Energy Center Saturday March 26.

Leading to his speech, a parade of local leaders, including Mayor Paul Soglin, praised Sanders for his work in Congress and his message as a candidate. Attendees said they felt energized by Sanders’ campaign and focus on income inequality.

Sanders’ announcement of his Washington victory mid-speech frenzied an already energetic gathering of mostly young people. Soglin, who shares a similar background in civil disobedience with Sanders, said he shares the candidate’s belief that the government is meant to help give everyone a fair chance at success.

“How about a president who’s spent their whole life fighting for social and economic justice?” Soglin said.

The youth in the crowd contrasted the attendees at Chelsea Clinton’s recent visit who were predominantly older. During this event, Clinton painted a dire picture for Democrats and progressive values in the coming decade.

Attendee Joshua Stuart, a 32-yearold from Waukesha, said he has been a Sanders supporter since the announcement of his candidacy. Stuart said this was the first candidate that has motivated him enough to actually attend a political rally.

“His message of taking away corporate power and giving it back to the people resonates with me the most,” Stuart said.

On other issues like healthcare, Stuart said he believes Sanders has the best policy positions, but ultimately he is voting for him because of his economic policies.

Rallygoers at large seemed to be largely in agreement with Stuart, with the crowd responding particularly loudly at the mention of free college tuition and higher taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

Throughout Sanders’ speech, he reiterated his ability to beat opponent Hillary Clinton despite trailing her in delegate count.

“Don’t listen to anyone who says we can’t win,” Sanders said. “We have a path to victory.”

Wisconsin voters will cast their ballots for their presidential nominee on April 5.

Kasich focuses on compromise, fiscal conservatism in town hall

Despite repeated calls to drop out of the presidential race, Gov. John Kasich, R-Ohio, held an upbeat town hall at Madison’s Sheraton Hotel.

Kasich boasted his record as a fiscal conservative in Congress and his center right policies to a crowd of 400-some people.

discussion on the threat of terrorism, which he described as a danger to people of all religions, not just Christians — as his opponents have suggested. Kasich called for an all-faith coalition to combat terrorism and better coordination among European agencies.

“NATO is an old organization from the Cold War era ... it should shift towards policing extremism,” he said.

In combating extremism, Kasich said he would go beyond using air power and deploy ground forces to counter ISIS.

Kasich also recounted his time in the House of Representatives, highlighting how he exposed the Pentagon’s gross overspending. Kasich’s fiscal conservancy, even with regard to defense spending, is a significant separator between him and his rivals.

“The military wanted to buy over 100 B-2 Bombers,” Kasich said. “I didn’t win, but they only bought 32 planes.”

Kasich’s statement parallels his belief that the only way to fix big issues like Social Security is through compromise.

Politics are an obstacle that may only be surpassed through mutual respect, he said.

Michael Zupan, University of Wisconsin sophomore, said this spirit of centrism and compromise appeals to him. He said Kasich is the only candidate who has shown a willingness to compromise.

“As a nuclear engineer, Kasich is the only candidate who has voiced concern over climate change while his rivals have denied it even exists,” Zupan said.

Regarding student debt, Kasich said there must be an effort to control cost increases

from universities and then restructuring debt. The call from Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vermont, to provide free tuition is unsustainable, he said.

Kasich attributed the problem of college graduates struggling to find employment to them choosing degrees that do not confer skills.

“Go to your adviser and ask them what jobs you can actually get with your major,” he said.

Kasich said voting for his conservative policies would increase job growth while maintaining necessary safety net programs for vulnerable individuals. He said young people must learn that government should only be thought of as a last resort.

Two days after rival Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vermont, drew a crowd of 8,000, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s only scheduled appearance in Madison proved a sharp contrast to Sanders’ boisterous rally.

In front of 200-some invited guests, Clinton joined the chorus of Democrats seeking a hearing for President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court appointment, using familiar arguments and personal anecdotes.

Despite taking place in Gordon Commons, only select students received an invitation after an informal vetting process, University of Wisconsin College Democrats Chair Chet Agni, said.

The crowd consisted of students, faculty, and current and former government officials, including former Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle.

Despite launching three new TV ads in Wisconsin, Clinton’s speech appeared more similar to that of a candidate in the general election than one seeking the Democratic nomination.

Instead of catering to Wisconsin issues, Clinton’s focus was on national issues, with barely a mention of her rival Sanders.

Clinton called on Senate Republicans to hold a hearing on the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland, and said both her time within the Senate and as a lawyer inform her position. She described the court as a force that could “demolish progressive accomplishments,” but also one that could “give a voice to those with the least power.” “[Republicans] say the American people shouldn’t be denied a voice,” Clinton said.

“Well, as one of the 65 million who voted to reelect Barack Obama, I’d say our voice is

being ignored right now.”

While not all attendees were in complete support of Clinton, they said it was her campaign’s policy, not her message, that appealed to them the most.

Former alderman Scott Resnick said he endorsed Clinton because of her pragmatic policy goals.

Given Clinton’s weakness among college age liberals, students in attendance said they found it interesting that the event was closed to most of the student body. Agni said the Clinton campaign had asked him to ensure students he invited were Clinton supporters.

Given the interruptions that have become commonplace at rallies across the country, Agni said it made sense for Clinton’s campaign to be wary of who attended. But Agni said the decision to host the event directly above where students eat and deny them access was puzzling and upset many students.

“To be fair this is how most political events happen,” Agni said. “When Russ Feingold came here it was also a closed event.”

Describing the far reaching effect of SCOTUS on policy, Clinton appealed directly to student concerns, citing laws allowing guns on campus, affirmative action and women’s access to abortion providers.

Clinton underscored the gravity of the Supreme Court nomination by remarking on the advanced age of three other justices and their projected retirement.

Young, Tenorio vie for District 5’s county board seat Homelessness, affordable housing, environment among issues candidates hope to address

The student-dominated District 5 of the Dane County Board of Supervisors will be up for grabs April 5 — here’s a look at the two candidates vying for a spot on the board.

Hayley Young, former president of College Democrats and University of Wisconsin alumna, will be facing off with Associated Students of Madison representative and fellow College Democrat, Angelito Tenorio. While there is significant overlap in the key issues they hope to address, Young is banking on her experience and detailed policy proposals while Tenorio said his discipline and multicultural perspective set him apart.

As members of College Democrats, it’s no surprise both candidates are focusing primarily on social issues in their bid to replace incumbent Leland Pan, who is leaving county government.

Both candidates said human services, lake pollution, racial inequity and sexual assault are core issues they would tackle as members of county government.

A 23-year-old and recent UW graduate, Young said she has a gained a wealth of experience from her time working as an activist within the community. From volunteering with Planned Parenthood to hosting a mayoral forum through College Democrats, Young said she has learned a great deal about collaborating with community organizations.

Young said she has gained this experience because she has not had the luxury of explicit power available to ASM representatives. It is this ability to collaborate she hopes to bring to the County Board, Young said.

“The reason I’m running is I’ve spent the last four years having the opportunity to engage in the community and I hope to bring that leadership to the Dane County Board,” she said.

During her time as an activist, Young said she’s proud of her work to better engage students and the community as a

Young said she hopes to continue the work the county is doing to address issues of sexual assault on campus by continuing to fund resources such as the Rape Crisis Center.

What sets her apart, she said, is her detailed policy proposals. She said unlike her opponent, she has a firm understanding of what she wants to see accomplished at the county level. “[Tenorio] talks about addressing housing density, but that’s not in the jurisdiction of the county board,” Young said. “I’m talking about things we can actually do.”

Young also points to her numerous endorsements, including five city council and board members, as further validation of her ability to effectively govern.

As a sophomore and dual citizen of the Philippines and the U.S., Tenorio said his experiences as a multicultural student and discipline as an ROTC member give him a unique perspective on county issues.

He said he can point to a history of working through ASM to solve issues of sexual assault and mental health as proof he is committed to working for the community.

Tenorio, who has not yet selected a major, said he originally wanted to go to medical school, but after shadowing doctors, he realized there was more good to be done through public service.

“I shadowed some doctors and I realized that I wouldn’t be able to solve the underlying problems they deal with as a doctor,” he said.

During his time at ASM, Tenorio said he has served on the University Affairs Committee and worked with organizations such as Promoting Awareness Victim Empowerment and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. He said he would continue working with ASM as a county board member to ensure resources are being used to address sexual assault and shortfalls in funding for mental health counseling.

Tenorio said cleaning up Mendota Lake would be a big priority because he believes the county has thus far been “all talk and no action.” He said he hopes to put a stop to students having to swim in a dirty lake with regular algae blooms and phosphate runoff.

Tenorio said he continues to reach out to students and county board members to better understand the issues facing students and the county as a whole. Because of this, he said the issues he will focus on continue to evolve as he speaks with more community members.

“I remember summing up the courage to knock on that first door, and since then, I’ve learned a lot about campaigning and these issues,” Tenorio said.

He said he hopes to continue learning from the experience of campaigning on how best to address the concerns of students and connect with his possible constituents.

On fundamental issues, the two candidates admit there is little separating them. But Young claims her policy positions are more concrete while Tenorio believes his background speaks for itself.

Experimenting playwrights find home at Broom Street Theater Black box company makes up for size with seasons of entirely original works; emphasizes inclusivity

Bred from the experimentation of the ‘60s, Broom Street Theater has always stood for freedom of expression against all odds.

A black box theater, Broom Street Theater offers an interactive intimacy that coincides with the theater’s experimental mission. Its shows are often performed in a “thrust style” — when audience members are seated on three sides of the stage, the fourth side serving as the background.

Thanks to local playwrights and the Broom Street Theater community, the company’s works are entirely original. Heather Renken, who has served as artistic director since 2010 believes that this quality sets Broom Street Theater apart from the rest.

“What makes our theater truly unique is that 100 percent of our season is original works,” she said. “You’re probably not going to see that anywhere else.”

The company was founded in 1969 by Stuart Gordon as a direct response to University of Wisconsin’s attempts to censor his on-campus theater troupe, Screw Theater, Renken said.

Screw Theater was under scrutiny after their 1968 production of “Peter Pan” featured nudity.

The theater then found its bearings under the artistic direction of Joel Gersmann. From 1970 until his death in 2005, Gersmann cultivated this theater co-op to become one of the most imaginative and inspired theaters Madison has to offer.

Under Renken’s direction, Broom Street Theater’s season has expanded to 10 shows, each with four week runs. Playwrights from across

the country submit plays for Renken to review, but it is common for the staff, actors or anyone else in the Broom Street Theater community to write their own plays for the season.

Renken said the theater urges local playwrights to share their work, allowing them free range of choice when it comes down to the style and manner of the story they want to tell. But the Broom Street Theater particularly encourages an experimental style, she said.

This theater’s set-up is constantly changing based on the story and the needs of the writers and directors. The theater’s moveable bleachers make this flexibility possible.

“Sweet William,” Broom Street Theater’s current show written by local playwright Doug Reed, is performed in a traditional “proscenium style,” where the audience is seated on one side of the stage.

The play tells the story of a curmudgeon baseball player who has hidden himself away, but when a filmmaker makes a documentary about him his life is revealed through a series of flashbacks.

Having been a part of virtually every facet of the theater, Renken said the theater emphasizes including people regardless of experience or inclination.

“People can come and participate in any way they choose,” she said. “Whether they are only here for acting, or only here for tech — it doesn’t matter. We are happy to initiate them into this art form.”

For nearly 50 years, Broom Street Theater has allowed Madison’s theater community a space to let their creativity run wild. With Renken’s artistic direction and the passion of the community, the future of Broom Street Theater is nothing short of thrilling.

UW professor challenges people to rethink realms they thought they knew Faisal Abdu’Allah creates alternative viewpoints, sets of conciousness through printmaking, photography

After converting to Islam in 1991, Faisal Abdu’Allah was given a name that means judge — someone who distinguishes between truth and falsehood.

Living up to the name, a central theme in Abdu’Allah’s works is finding the truth in both one’s self and surroundings.

An associate professor of printmaking at University of Wisconsin, Abdu’Allah recalls some of his first artistic efforts, the nuance and challenges of addressing his experiences and now being a teacher of the arts.

Abdu’Allah began his path towards printmaking and photography after a student-exchange program sent him from the London College of Art to the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 1989. It was there also that he heard speeches from a local lecturer from a nearby mosque on the radio, which energized him to reconsider his identity.

“I had a Scottish name. When the landowners came to Jamaica — where my parents are from — they came from Scotland,” Abdu’Allah said. “They owned the land and they named my forefathers after them. So why should I give credibility to a family that enslaved my forefathers?”

One of Abdu’Allah’s earliest public pieces was “I Wanna Kill Sam ‘Cause He Ain’t My Motherfucking Uncle,” which was inspired by the Ice Cube song “I Wanna Kill Sam.” That work was also Abdu’Allah’s first effort that featured his own photography, a suggestion from a professor because it would add more substance and subtract potential copyright issues, he said.

The result was Abdu’Allah taking some pictures of his friends, blowing them up to a larger than life size and then printing them onto steel. Abdu’Allah explains the threeprint work featured young men he knew, but for the art world, what stood out was that they were black. “[The art world] thought, ‘These people are not the common occupants of this space, therefore we must highlight their ethnicity’ … and I began to understand that the art world wasn’t

familiar with this kind of representation,” he said.

Abdu’Allah said his work is not about emphasizing race, but rather about telling a story again and from the very beginning.

In his case, race is a part of his story — but one shouldn’t confuse it as the whole story.

“If you want to call me a black artist, call Damien Hirst or Jeff Koons a white artist — then you can call me a black artist and I’m happy with that label,” Abdu’Allah said. “But if you’re saying that I’m a black artist and that Jeff Koons is an artist, you’re saying that my issues are only black, they’re only about blackness. And I think that it dilutes, it denigrates the intellectual content of the work.”

For Abdu’Allah, it’s important for the art world to understand he works with what he collides most with. Race is a component of his work, but it doesn’t define it.

Instead, he is interested in conveying other abstract concepts in his art, particularly religion. Influenced by the religiosity of his father, a church minister, Abdu’Allah uses familiar religious titles in his work, such as “Garden of Eden,” “Last Supper” and “Revelations.” Abdu’Allah wants people to rethink a realm they thought they knew. “[Working with religious titles] was just

opening the first chapter for my audience to try engage with the work,” he said.

As a professor, teaching and conceptions about teaching also plays a large role in his artistic process.

In his recent piece,“The Count,” which is featured in the UW Art Department Faculty Quadrennial Exhibition, Abdu’Allah used a chalkboard with permanent screen print to challenge the audience to reassess the way they were taught, and to re-evaluate what he calls “mis-knowledge,” or purported truths.

“The chalkboard is a space, a conduit that we are taught is the truth,” he said.

“The person who is the gatekeeper of the board — your teacher — has certain kinds of knowledge and mis-knowledge that they can continue to support.”

In Abdu’Allah’s own teaching, the most important aspect is having a student walk out of his classroom as somebody different than who originally entered. Abdu’Allah recounted when earlier this year, one of his students “piped up” against censorships and what the word meant to her. He said he had never seen her speak up like that in the two years he had her as a student.

“I know that she is a completely different person now, and I’ve done my job,” Abdu’Allah said.

Comedian’s observational humor uses relatable, ‘striking’ experiences

‘Like an omelet,’ Brian Regan’s acts turn over, adapt with changing world as he increasingly delves into politics, religion

As funny over the phone as he is on stage, Brian Regan takes observational humor back to its roots with quick jabs at ordinary things that make them extraordinary.

His performance will be part of the recent influx of headline comedians to come into Madison in the next month. On April 1, he will be performing at the Orpheum. Even though he performed in Madison in 2014, there’s no need to worry — his acts tend to change.

The Floridian comedian has been performing his observational humor for more than 30 years now, and his material has developed along the way.

“The act kind of gradually turns over,” Regan

said. “So if somebody saw me the last time through, hopefully a lot of the stuff I’m doing will be different. I keep turning it over and turning it over — like an omelet.”

Regan’s style strays away from obscenities and vulgarities. Some of his more recent and famous work consists of an emergency room experience and checking in at a hotel — comedy that can relate to a wide range of audiences.

In another analogy to his comedy, Regan described selecting team members as a captain and wanting to “pick all the cool kids.” But for Regan, the “cool kids” are his bits. His writing process as a whole is an interesting facet.

“Occasionally, you will experience something, you’ll read something, or you’ll see something that strikes you as a little bit different than it might

strike other people,” Regan said. “You might see the funny in it, and you’ll take those opportunities as they come. Maybe you will write them down and say, ‘Maybe I can turn this into a bit.’”

Regan values his comedic expansion, and compared it to a band showcasing growth through various albums — an aspect that Regan believes should apply to comedians as well.

And though Regan makes sure to switch things up in general as his career has moved forward, he also correlates changing his act with the changing world. Previously he didn’t bring topics like politics and religion into his comedy, but now they are subjects that are prevalent in his acts.

Despite this, Regan’s comedy is not defined as “political comedy.” Change is important to Regan, but mainly focusing on politics, religion and the

like will not become a dominating force in his act.

For him, the search for material opportunity is endless.

“Not that [politics and religion] would ever be my whole act, but I do want to be a moving target,” he said. “I’m answering everything in metaphors.

I just have a book of metaphors in front of me and an oscillating fan blowing the pages back and forth.

Whatever page it lands on, I just read that metaphor — and pretend that it is part of the answer.”

Unknowingly, Regan answered various questions in metaphors throughout the interview.

Upon realizing, he shared a laugh.

But the fact he subconsciously did so, both through standard responses and attempts to crack a joke, he demonstrated his effortless humor — the mark of a talented comedian.

Despite mainstream rhetoric, infidelity is multi-faceted issue for couples Clarifying limits can help protect relationships, prevent someone from getting hurt

Navigating exclusivity in college can present challenges, especially when conflated with the ambiguity of hook-up culture.

Many folks entering romantic relationships struggle over defining the relationship. People fear that introducing monogamy too early will scare the other person away, or bringing it up too late will mean their partner has already had sex outside of the relationship without seeing it as hurtful. Every relationship follows its own unique trajectory, and proper communication creates guidelines for a healthier, happier path.

But even the smoothest roads contain bumps, and sometimes partners in committed relationships find themselves pursuing emotional or physical intimacy outside of their partner.

Infidelity — also known as cheating, adultery or having an affair — violates assumed or explicitly stated agreements regarding emotional or sexual exclusivity. Often, discovering infidelity creates jealous rifts in the relationship. Despite mainstream rhetorics that claim otherwise, cheating is neither simple nor a guarantee for a

break-up.

Unfortunately, some may seek affairs because they want out of a relationship and cannot find the courage to end it honestly. People may cheat and place little or no effort hiding their tracks, indicating a lack of respect for both the relationship and their partner. Communicating desire for an end to the relationship inflicts pain, but behaving dishonestly and pressing the selfdestruct button using infidelity casts a shadow over the entirety of the relationship.

Partners may commit infidelities because they cannot commit to a monogamous relationship.

Monogamy-normative culture presents serious obstacles for people who prefer being with more than one individual at a time, whether romantically or sexually.

Rather than pursuing adultery, people who prefer polyamory or other forms of nonmonogamy should have conversations with their partners. Explaining preferred modes of romance and sexuality builds trust and intimacy as opposed to cheating, which damages relationships. Introduce non-monogamy as an experiment, and adventure to try together rather than a disastrous anomaly.

Society places plenty of rules and regulations

on sexual and romantic scripts, but we have the power to rewrite them through open communication. Even if monogamy works for a relationship, defining boundaries can be beneficial. For example, do we consider flirting cheating? Can a partner kiss their friend at a party without violating the terms of the relationship?

Clarifying these limits can protect relationships. Monogamy doesn’t necessarily mean not wanting to sleep with other people — it means restraining from sleeping with other people.

Discovering infidelity in a relationship can feel world-ending. Suddenly, all the affection and trust placed in a partner feels hollow and false.

Following the release of Ashley Madison’s client list, plenty of folks in committed relationships were forced to confront the reality of their partner pursuing other people.

Every incidence of infidelity is unique, but none stand independent of the relationship. After the anger and hurt have faded a little bit, discuss honestly the events leading up to adultery.

Cheating can mean the end of a relationship, but plenty survive it and continue to stay together for much longer. Compromises and sacrifices are necessary sometimes, but do not sacrifice

autonomy, happiness or self-respect in the name of a partner.

Moving past infidelity can be challenging, but everyone deserves to have their commitments honored. Never feel obligated to stay or leave someone; make decisions carefully and independently of social pressure as much as possible.

Sometimes circumstances limit ability to be sexual or intimate with a partner. Lovers may be sick or disabled, thus making the option of divorce or a break-up cruel. According to sexadvice columnist Dan Savage, “cheating is permissible when it amounts to the least worst option, i.e., it is allowed for someone who has made a monogamous commitment and isn’t getting any at home … and divorce isn’t an option … and the sex on the side makes it possible for the cheater to stay married and stay sane.”

Many may disagree, but if infidelity allows a person to stay by their partner’s side and provide emotional or financial support, perhaps cheating is the lesser of two evils.

By no means does this excuse betrayals of commitment. But it does provide an empathetic backdrop for those who pursue sex outside of a relationship when it is not available to them.

The mayor will appoint the members of the 11-person task force, which the City Department of Civil Rights will support. Gloria Reyes, deputy mayor for public safety, civil rights and community services will direct the task force, which will include artists, promoters, police and ALRC members.

So far, the task force has yet to appoint all its members and it remains unclear exactly what shape its initiatives will take.

Evans said he hopes the task force will create protections for venues that follow city and task force safety guidelines. These protections would mean the ALRC and city attorney’s office would have a more difficult time blaming venues for instances of violence that occur at hip-hop shows if they meet all the guidelines, he said.

But for some artists, the lack of venues is only the tip of the iceberg.

Rob Franklin, a Madison rapper and current candidate for the Dane County Board of Supervisors, said a significant obstacle for the local scene will be the popular perception of the genre as a whole.

“A lot of times hip-hop is code for black, and that causes a skewed interpretation,” Franklin said. “If a fight happens at a hip-hop show, then people say it’s because of hip-hop, when really it’s because of a few individuals.”

A Madison sound emerges: Hip-hop activists work to strengthen genre Isolated incidents of violence at shows have damaged music’s reputation in city; community pushes to unify local, campus artistry

There was a time during the ‘90s and early 2000s when hip-hop vibrated throughout the halls of venues and clubs on the isthmus.

There was a sense of a real hip-hop scene in Madison — hip-hop artists and DJs performed on a weekly basis, LaCouir Yancey, a member of one of Madison’s pioneering hip-hop acts, The Black Poets Society, said.

But in the years that followed, Yancey said the entire genre — associated with people of color — came under fire for isolated incidents of violence that occurred at Madison shows.

“A couple guys — ignorant guys — would cause a disturbance and then it would be blamed all on hip-hop, i.e. black folk,” Yancey said. “It became that wherever there was hip-hop, there was going to be negative stuff.”

As hip-hop’s reputation in Madison deteriorated, it became more difficult to find spaces where it would be welcomed. Over time, 14 • badgerherald.com • March 29, 2016

larger venues dedicated to the genre closed their doors. Other venues, fearing a similar fate, limited the number of hip-hop acts they hosted.

Today, The Frequency on West Main Street is the only local venue that frequently hosts local hiphop artists. But in early March, the venue decided to halt booking new hip-hop shows for a year following a fight that broke out during a private event.

In previous years, The Frequency was forced to sign a lease that explicitly banned hosting hiphop events, Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, said. The move came from the landlord after several high profile instances of violence at or around hip-hop events, he said.

“The Alcohol Licensing Review Committee has struggled with this for many years and I personally cringe when applicants come before us and go to great lengths to say they won’t play hiphop,” Verveer said.

The Frequency was quick to rescind their March 2016 ban and issue an apology. From the beginning, owner Darwin Sampson said he

lamented the need for a “timeout.”

In his apology two days later, following an outcry from the local hip-hop community, Sampson admitted the ban was an irrational response.

“I regret throwing a blanket, dogmatic solution on the issue of violence,” Sampson said. “It was a mistake to lump all hip-hop together.”

But The Frequency’s hip-hop booking agent, Shah Evans, said this genre-blaming is far from an isolated incident.

Venues like High Noon Saloon have refused to book shows for local hip-hop artists, Brennan Haelig, Strange Oasis Entertainment co-founder, said.

Cathy Dethmers, owner of the High Noon Saloon, said this is primarily because her venue focuses on the rock genre. The High Noon books about 15 to 20 hip-hop shows a year, but they are primarily national acts.

Equating the genre with violence has been detrimental to hip-hop’s development in Madison,

Evans said.

For Christian Robinson, a hip-hop artist based in Madison, The Frequency’s temporary ruling presented a threat to the local scene.

“What happened was really dangerous for hiphop,” he said. “People look at the Frequency like an institution … so when The Frequency posted something that negatively impacts a genre like they did, people will just buy into it.”

But despite genre-blaming, Madison’s hip-hop artists have refused to stand idly by as they’ve witnessed their genre take a hit.

Task force

In response to a lack of venues that host hip-hop shows, Evans said local artists along with Madison business and government leaders will form an ad hoc task force committee to help guide the approval process for new entertainment events at private and public venues within the city.

Evans said the proliferation of new venue locations will be critical for both the health of the

In Madison, individuals have used hip-hop to foster goodwill on a local and national level.

Roberto Rivera is president of The Good Life Organization, which works to engage kids across the U.S. using methods like hip-hop. He also founded University of Wisconsin’s multicultural First Wave program, which grants scholarships and develops students’ art to promote positive social dialogue. Rivera got his start working sideby-side with Madison hip-hop artists, including Yancey and The Black Poets Society.

Rivera learned the positive power of hiphop through working at local youth centers in Madison. He noticed teens were fascinated by forms of hip-hop, but were frustrated because of a lack of guidance.

To address this gap, Rivera enlisted the help of Madison hip-hop artists to help mentor and develop the kids.

“Workshops turned into concerts and festivals,” he said. “We started doing hip-hop plays, and it became … a whole alliance of hip-hop artists throughout the city representing real hip-hop and mentoring youths in the process.”

The Good Life Organization is not alone in promoting the positivity of hip-hop in Madison.

The John Vietnam Nguyen Project and Urban Community Arts Network also focus on using hip-hop as a tool for social change.

Crossing communities

In another effort to strengthen the genre in Madison, the hip-hop community is pushing to better unify the local scene, which some artists argue is divided by generation and location.

Robinson, who recently graduated from UW and First Wave, is a prominent facilitator in the unification effort. He is also a founder of First Wave Music, a collective of musicians within the scholarship program created to promote each other’s work.

Robinson realized there was a division between campus artists and artists in the wider Madison community.

“We all live in the same 10-mile radius, but there’s not a lot of collaboration going on,” he said.

Campus and area artists often go to each other’s shows, he said, but they rarely perform shows together.

To make progress on the issue, Robinson organized a Feb. 26 show, Nimbus 2.0. Named after his previous album Nimbus, the show was a re-purposing of the album to include 16 artists from both UW and the wider Madison community.

“Everyone gave it their all,” he said. “What was beautiful was seeing a local audience mixed with a campus audience. If we could just do that for every show, I think that’s where you start seeing a Madison scene.”

Strange Oasis Entertainment, a local concert promoter founded by UW students, also plays a role in bringing the campus and local scene together through underground events.

Because of the combination of high demand for hip-hop with a general lack of venue space, Haelig said most Strange Oasis Entertainment shows happen in unlicensed basements and houses.

In addition to SOE, the North Street Cabaret, opening this summer, hopes to create a culturally diverse venue, Kevin Willmott, an organizer, said. The venue will feature a Black Arts Matter evening, which will include one younger and older local rapper, Willmott said A recent effort from Rivera, Yancey and others has been the return of an event called Soul Sessions, a monthly celebration of hip-hop in all its forms.

“The three goals of Soul Sessions is to unify the hip-hop community, build consciousness in the community and to give youth a voice,” Rivera said.

Rivera said Soul Sessions seek to join together not only the campus and community scenes, but also the various generations of Madison hiphop artists.

Robinson said the on-going efforts have already produced results — albeit small ones.

“It’s in baby phases, but you’re beginning to see emerge a Madison sound where people can hear a song and react, ‘oh, that’s the Madison sound right there,’” Robinson said.

On a grander level, Rivera said efforts to unify and strengthen Madison’s hip-hop can even help eradicate racial disparities the city faces.

“This idea of building an artistic and cultural community that’s inclusive and diverse is important for addressing ... the ills going on in our community,” Rivera said. “If we can get that right, we’ll start to see a lot of other needles move in the right direction.”

Former UW researcher cooks up Cajun cuisine Ellen Cook’s ‘WisCajun’ uses local products to bring authentic Louisiana food to Midwest

When a former University of Wisconsin researcher combines her love of the Dairy State and an affinity for Cajun cuisine, the result is a “WisCajun.”

A term coined by Ellen Cook, the head of culinary business Cajun Cook, “WisCajunizing” consists of using local products to bring authentic Cajun food to the Midwest. Not only does Cajun Cook cater, it also offers online recipes and starter kits for others to dabble with dishes on their own.

Born and raised in Houma, Louisiana on a bayou south of New Orleans, Cook was always surrounded by Cajun food, due to her mother’s Cajun roots. But Cook did not start cooking until she was in college, where her mom would guide her through recipes over the phone.

“They’re family traditions that have been passed down and modified by each generation,” she said.

Cook said the modern day representation of Louisiana food culture has been distorted by the media — people do not understand the historical differences between Cajun and Creole. But for the people of Louisiana, particularly for the people of both cultures, they are distinctly different, Cook said.

The Cajuns originated from Canada, describing their food as “rustic,” she said. According to Cook, the Creoles came to New Orleans from the islands of Haiti with food that “is a little more sophisticated, as far recipes go.”

Before Cook began her culinary business, she worked as

a researcher in UW’s animal science laboratory, a job she began when she was 28. Unfortunately, a lapse in research funding forced Cook to move on.

With the support of family and friends in the UW community, Cook was able to move forward with her culinary aspirations.

Many school faculty members, including the chancellor and provost, had experienced Cook’s cooking talents firsthand at committee parties. Friends and family later encouraged Cook to start her own line of work.

Running a business and conducting research may be different, Cook said, but both require raising money and fostering creativity to be successful. For Cook, these similarities made the transition from research to culinary business smoother.

“It’s incredibly rewarding, it’s kind of taken on a life of its own — it’s going so well,” Cook said. “It’s completely different from doing scientific research, but then almost the same. With scientific research, I was always having to write grants and raise my own money anyway. I was always having to be creative, so it’s different — but the same.”

Since retiring, Cook is focused on the preservation of her culinary business. She hopes to release a few more food products, then find a way to keep things moving forward. Eventually, she would like to pass off the business. But how or to whom does not matter to Cook — as long as her recipes stay intact.

To Cook, the most important aspect of her culinary business is using it as an outlet to shed light on Cajun cuisine and simply share her native food. And with what Cook calls her “larger Cajun food-loving family,” she can “WisCajunize” her way to a better public perception of Cajun culture.

‘90s upbringing inspires Wolf Alice’s grungy sound Grammy-nominated UK band ready for rowdy crowd at Majestic April 10

The first thing Theo Ellis, bassist of English rock band Wolf Alice, thought of when he learned The Badger Herald was a popular, defunct TV show — albeit one set in Green Bay. “Is that where ‘That ‘70s Show’ takes place? I love that show,” Ellis said.

Wolf Alice will bring their brand of fuzzy, ‘90s-inspired music to Madison April 10. Calling in from York, England before a show later that night with the rest of the band, Ellis spoke with the Herald about the band’s origins, inspirations and what aspects of performing in Madison excite him.

An up-and-coming band straight out of North London, Wolf Alice came together through mutual friendship. Throughout their time the band has released two EPs and an album, My Love is Cool, which have generated an immense buzz — including nominations from award ceremonies like the BRITS and the Grammys.

The album is full of heavy, echoed guitar riffs that some have compared to grunge acts like Nirvana. Ellis said this similarity was not intentional, but a product of the band’s upbringing.

Growing up in the ‘90s, grunge was “part of what [the band members] were digesting,” he said.

Where Wolf Alice differs from these influences can be found in lead vocalist Ellie Rowsell’s singing. Roswell switches between ethereal and subdued vocals, like on the track “Bros,” 16 • badgerherald.com • March 29, 2016

and giddy shouting, which can be heard on the punk-inspired track, “You’re a Germ.”

This contrast between hard and soft is part of what makes the band’s music so strong and engaging. This contrast also displays the band’s wide variety of musical influences ranging from grunge and punk all the way to mainstream pop music such as the English allwomen group All Saints, Ellis said.

Despite having crisscrossed the globe multiple times over the span of their brief career, Wolf Alice still enjoys small gigs full of young people, like Madison, as much as large arenas. When Ellis heard Madison was a college town full of rowdy young people ready to rock out, he was excited “The rowdier the better,” he said.

A Wolf Alice show is meant to be a memorable experience, and playing to American crowds thrills the band because they’re more “vocal” and “encouraging,” Ellis said.

The American brand of rowdiness will fit nicely with the bombastic anthems “Giant Peach” and “Moaning Lisa Smile,” the latter garnering the group a Grammy nomination.

“The Grammys were fun, and it’s nice to get recognized,” Ellis said.

But the band doesn’t make music that panders to critics, and awards “isn’t what it’s all about,” he said.

Instead, Wolf Alice seeks to cater to the screaming fans in the audience of wherever the concert may be. Big or small, every concert is important and exciting to Wolf Alice.

Ryan can, should make incompetent House effective again

Earmarks, power of committee, deciding who speaks are all tools Speaker of the House should use to motivate Congress members

As the Republican Presidential Convention nears, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-WI, is a name continually considered for the Republican presidential nominee in the case of a brokered convention.

Ryan, though, has proved he does not have the legislative savviness to properly control the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, even if both are controlled by Republicans.

Without a doubt, Congress, under President Barack Obama, has been more inactive than under any other president in recent history. Even under a Republican-controlled House and Senate, effective legislation has been few and far between.

With Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, stepping down from the Speaker of the House position, Ryan was looked to as the successor whom, with his youth and charisma, had the ability to make the House more effective.

But under Ryan’s guidance, the House has moved from ineffective to ridiculous.

The biggest accomplishments of Ryan’s House, thus far, has been naming post offices and filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court challenging Obama’s executive orders on immigration.

While these two legislative actions have little impact on the American people, the major issues have gone unaddressed. Issues such as combating the Zika virus, addressing the Flint water crisis and helping Puerto Rico avoid default have not been addressed. Two of these, the Zika virus and Flint water crisis, are public health concerns that could and should be addressed by Ryan.

More impressively, Republican House leaders have not been able to craft a budget — their

most important job — despite six weeks of deliberation.

Ryan should be wielding the powerful Speaker of the House position to force compromise among Republicans for his sake and his party’s benefit because he has the tools to make this happen. And with a 13 percent approval rating, the Republicancontrolled House needs to make a substantial change in the way it operates.

As speaker, Ryan has three measures that can force the House to take action: the ability to recognize who can speak during a floor session, deciding who gets appointed to what committee and earmarks.

Now, all of these measures are quite petty, but pettiness forced the House into this inactive state, so pettiness will solve this crisis. The most petty, by far, is the speaker’s ability to recognize who can speak during a floor session. The speaker can effectively decide which voices are allowed to be heard. That said, Ryan can essentially limit the speech of representatives that aren’t helping to effectively run the government — which is something he should be employing.

The appointing process to committees is one of the most popular ways of keeping members of the House in line. Threatening to demote a representative from the chair of a committee is key to controlling that member because of the major role committees play in formulating policy.

Every bill, before going to the House floor, passes through a committee and the committee chair chooses which of his or her bills move onto a House-wide vote.

Earmarks, or commonly known as pork barrel spending, is probably the easiest and best way to

The bribes don’t go to the representatives — it goes to the representative’s constituents in a public works project. Once Boehner outlawed these bribes, the House stopped working. Ryan should return to giving out free money if he wants to see a more effective legislature.

Ryan is a reasonable person. He is a possible future presidential candidate, but as president, he would need to wield all the power of the office.

If he cannot do so as Speaker of the House, how could he do so as president?

Hayley Young is right choice for Dane County Board of Supervisors Political professional committed to Madison, candidate has time, resources to establish consisistent voice representing students

No one can replace the fiery, colorful character that is Dane County Supervisor, Leland Pan, District 5.

But when Pan announced he would step down from the Dane County Board of Supervisors after four years of service, two candidates stepped up to the plate.

In the race to represent a district with a predominantly student population, recent University of Wisconsin alumna Hayley Young faces off against UW sophomore Angelito Tenorio.

Tenorio and Young tout similar platforms — cleaning up the environment, addressing rampant county-wide racial disparities, advocating for the homeless and representing student interests at the county level. Their biggest difference lies in their ability to achieve tangible results.

Other supervisors often see the District 5 seat

as a joke because of historically poor attendance at meetings, the seat holder’s regular passage of nonbinding referendums that enact no lasting change and a notable lack of initiative from the seat holder, Young told The Badger Herald Editorial Board.

But she said she can bring professionalism to the position.

Frankly, this board agrees.

While Tenorio is well-intentioned, he does not have the necessary experience and knowledge of the workings of county politics to accomplish his desired policies.

Tenorio has experience with the Associated Students of Madison, but it’s difficult to see this often unresponsive and ineffectual student government as adequate preparation for a position on the Board of Supervisors.

In contrast, Young has held leadership positions that more closely resemble a county government environment. Young chaired College Democrats

her senior year at UW and is a recent addition to Rep. Melissa Sargent’s, D-Madison, staff at the Capitol.

ASM usually has a guaranteed seat at the table while other organizations such as College Democrats often have to fight for a seat, Young said, which more accurately mirrors the actuality of county politics.

But one of Tenorio’s advantages lies in his close connection to campus. As a current UW student, Tenorio could easily represent campus voices more, a role he said he’s already comfortable with as an ASM leader.

Similar to Young, Tenorio said things like affordable housing and racial equity would be issues he would push forward. Tenorio also expressed interest in meeting with student activists often, to stay connected to issues affecting students.

Young also looks to stay connected through similar methods.

Despite graduating in May of last year, Young still retains considerable ties to campus. Cognizant of the fact she is no longer a student, Young said she will hold regular check-ins with campus leaders, listening sessions and office hours for the UW community. The techniques found success with Scott Resnick, former alderman of the student-dominated District 8, Young said.

As a young political professional committed to being in Madison for the foreseeable future, Young has the time and resources to establish a consistent and well-developed student voice within county government for years to come.

Likewise, this board is confident Tenorio could become a valuable asset to local government given the time to develop a more in-depth awareness of county issues and government mechanics.

For the April 5 election, however, The Badger Herald Editorial Board endorses Young for the Dane County Board of Supervisors.

Johnson on wrong side of history with refusal to hear Supreme Court nominee Republicans quick to forget past nominations, refuse to put party politics aside despite moderate choice in Merrick Garland

Many people far more important than a sparsely read University of Wisconsin student have requested many times that Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, and the rest of the United States Senate need to hold hearings on President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.

Nonetheless, I will use my platform to badger Johnson until he does his job.

In the immediate aftermath of Supreme Court Justice Anton Scalia’s death, it was semi-understandable that Johnson and other Republicans in the Senate would play hardball and insist they would not allow Obama’s nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, on to the court.

This is, after all, the gridlocked, ineffective U.S. Congress we all know and despise.

But now, weeks later and after Garland turns out to not only be a fairly universally respected man, but also very moderate compared to previous presidential appointees, this is getting absurd.

Johnson and his Republican colleagues insist that history suggests Obama should not appoint a nominee within his final year.

That just isn’t true.

Even former President Ronald Reagan, the poster boy for the modern Republican Party (who, I might add, was considerably less conservative than the current party), nominated Supreme Court Justice Kennedy in his final year in office.

Kennedy continues to be an incredibly moderate Justice, and most believe Garland would be too.

For the record, Democrats did not control the Senate that year. Not only did they hold hearings, not a single member of either party voted against the confirmation of Kennedy.

This situation seems incredibly similar, except the Republican Party continues to prove their inability to effectively govern this country, insisting they won’t even hold hearings on the president’s nominee.

The president’s party does not matter, nor which side holds the majority in the Senate. It is the president’s job to appoint a Supreme Court Justice when a seat opens.

It is the U.S. Senate’s job to hold hearings on the appointee’s qualifications. Then, if the candidate is qualified and properly vetted, the person will

become a Supreme Court Justice.

It’s pretty simple.

It is Johnson’s job to help the democratic process run as those who built the country intended.

Frankly, even without history on the side of Obama, this should be a no brainer for Johnson.

Even if you disregard the fact that a fairly large majority of Americans want to see Senate hearings for the nominee, it still doesn’t make sense for Johnson to completely reject the idea. And yes, even though he is “open to a meeting” with the nominee, he is outright rejecting hearings.

After promising Wisconsinites change and an end to the gridlock in Washington, the past six years have been completely dismal for Johnson.

Not only has he been almost entirely ineffective as a senator, he has actively added to partisanship and the inability of congress to govern.

Just a guess, but his unwillingness to work with congressional Democrats is probably why nearly every poll from the time former Sen. Russ Feingold announced his candidacy has shown Johnson to be trailing by double digits.

I don’t think this current situation has lost Johnson any more support than he already had from being a completely ineffective and nearly invisible senator, but it certainly hasn’t helped.

Then again, it is nearly impossible to be down by more than twelve points in a swing state like

today’s Wisconsin.

But generally, when reelection is less than eight months away, most swing voters would probably like to see their elected senator doing something to help end partisan gridlock, not make it worse.

Despite my wish to see him voted out in November, I will offer Johnson this once in a lifetime advice to gain in Wisconsin polls: do your job. Make your voice heard amongst your party and at least push for hearings.

If you want to win over Wisconsin independents who are clearly disenchanted by your time in office, it should probably start with allowing the Supreme Court to function with the number of justices it was meant to.

By continuing to toe the party line and acting as a leader for the group refusing to hold these hearings, you are further digging your already deep political grave.

If you decide to keep this going though, Johnson, it’s fine by me.

Come January it will be rather hilarious to watch Feingold take back his seat and vote to accept the nomination of a far more liberal nominee when Trump loses the general election to the Democrats.

Letter to editor: Time to put politics aside in judicial elections Kloppenburg offers distinct difference to Bradley, who has ties to Republican Party, Gov. Scott Walker I’ve heard a lot of people claiming they are not going to vote in the upcoming election. I would be lying if I said I didn’t understand why.

On one side, you have a front-running candidate calling for the ban of Muslims into the United States. On the other, you have an individual painted by the media as untrustworthy running against a “socialist.” Needless to say, I can see why party politics may not be for everybody this election cycle.

Instead, I invite you to participate in the election and vote for a race without parties: the state Supreme Court race.

The Supreme Court race is voted on in the April 5 election, alongside the Presidential primary. It is a non-partisan race, so even those of you refusing to follow a party can cast a vote. Smaller, statewide races often have significantly less turnout, so every vote begins to count even more in the final tally. The race has

been headlining state media for a long time, but for those of you not aware here’s a refresher.

Justice Rebecca Bradley is a sitting judge on the State Supreme Court. She’s seeking to be elected for the first time after Gov. Scott Walker appointed her to the Court in October following the death of Justice Patrick Crooks. Her name may sound familiar, even for those of you not following the race. Recently, she was found to have written newspaper op-eds during college referring to gay people as “degenerates” and “queers.” She also wrote that “homosexuals and drug addicts who do essentially kill themselves and others through their own behavior deservedly receive none of my sympathy.”

While this was published in 1992, critics claim it’s evidence of her larger beliefs on LGBTQ issues. She has been appointed

by Walker three times to positions on the state’s courts, a testament to her alignment

with the sort of values Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia embody. If that sort of candidate does not inspire you enough to vote, let me offer an alternative.

Judge JoAnne Kloppenburg sits on the 4th District Court of Appeals. While she does not have a history of hate and discrimination towards a particular community, she does have a history as an attorney, assistant attorney general and volunteer. Her non-partisan approach has been noted by many of her colleagues, including her former primary opponent Judge Joe Donald who endorsed her within a week of being defeated this past February. Kloppenburg’s disciplined and principled handling of cases throughout her career has been recognized by both judges and attorneys, and speaks to the fair approach she takes to her job every day.

Party politics may not appeal to you, but hopefully you’ll find a refreshing alternative within the state Supreme Court race. If you’re tired of “politics as usual” and believe politics belong outside of the judicial system, I highly encourage you to vote in the April 5 election.

Regardless of which side you take, it is imperative you get out and vote so your voice is heard. The only way to change a system you are unhappy with is to cast your vote and encourage others to do so. There is still plenty of time before the election to take a side and decide who most deserves your support.

I, like many, have chosen a side and intend to advocate for that side in the time I have left before the election. I hope you will all do the same.

National, state elections come to head in Wisconsin College Republicans: State’s April primary will drastically affect America’s future

College Democrats: Student voices must be represented, Republican bigotry must be rejected

April 5 is a big day for Wisconsinites — especially the college students.

No, it’s not because a new season of “The Bachelor” is airing, or because the Badgers are national basketball champions — it’s even more sensational than that. For the vast majority of college students, myself included, this year will be the first time we can vote in a primary.

Sensational is a perfect way to describe this campaign season. Some people may even suggest that watching a GOP presidential debate is better than reality TV. It seems that is what it took to finally win the attention of millennials.

Now that the government has finally grabbed the attention of college students I hope it motivates them to head to the polls. Why? Because the idea of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas or Gov. John Kasich as our next president should be more than enough motivation. Their decisions will change your life. To be more accurate, our decisions on whether or not we vote, and who we vote for will give one of those five people the power to change our lives. Yes, choosing to not vote will also impact your future.

Voting is our civic duty. It’s a simple act of participation that identifies us as American citizens. There are still so many countries across the world that don’t get the opportunity to speak their mind and share their opinions like we do in the United States.

Voting is our responsibility. We have many responsibilities in life, like cleaning our homes and paying our rent. What happens when you stop cleaning your room or when you stop paying your rent? Suddenly you’re faced with an overwhelming mess that seems to be unstoppable and continues to encroach on your daily life and on the place you call home. Just like with our household responsibilities, when we stop fulfilling our responsibilities in our government, our entire country is faced with an overwhelming mess that is hard to control.

Over the past few years, voter apathy has only increased. People have stopped fulfilling their basic duty of voting in elections and our country

We once again have the opportunity April 5 to exercise our constitutional right to vote.

We will be making some big decisions including who to nominate for president of the United States, who will serve us on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and who will represent us on the Dane County Board.

Student turnout in elections is typically abysmal. With so much at stake this year, I hope you all decide to take a role in deciding who governs you. There have been incredibly dangerous trends in U.S. and Wisconsin politics as of late, and we need to vote to reject them.

If for no other reason, you should turn out to vote to spite the Republican legislators in the Capitol who have made voting nearly impossible for students. From the absurd requirement that out-of-state students must obtain a Wisconsin-issued voter ID to the elimination of special registration deputies, the primary way we students register each other to vote, it has become clear Republican legislators are not interested in encouraging student voter turnout.

Now the scary stuff. First up in the parade of ignorance is Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Rebecca Bradley. She has been appointed to three positions in three years by our very own Gov. Scott Walker. All politics aside (as they should be in Supreme Court races), one can only be judged on their character and integrity in these races. In recently unearthed articles Bradley penned while in college at Marquette, it has become clear her character and integrity are woefully lacking.

In one article, Bradley called AIDS victims, “degenerate drug addicts and queers.”

In another, she equated abortion to the Holocaust and slavery. In yet another, she suggested women are somewhat at fault when they are date raped. Bradley has said she should not be judged on what she wrote when she was a young college student.

Let me boldly say I stand behind all the articles I have written in college. None of

is becoming a mess. The Obama administration and many other Democrats have taken advantage of voter apathy and increased voter disconnect by inappropriately expanding federal government to the point where it infringes upon Americans’ basic freedoms.

Throughout Obama’s two terms he has issued several overreaching executive orders, buried our nation in trillions of dollars of debt, dismantled our healthcare system, focused more on climate change than foreign relations and he has tried to limit the rights of the 2nd Amendment.

This is our reality. As college students, we are no longer the future, we are the present. The adult world exists and we are entering it. It’s a world where we have to pay ridiculously high taxes, while still managing to pay our bills. A world where terrorism is infiltrating our country just as we are starting to build our families and homes. A world where the government has created not only a disconnect with the people, but distrust in our respectful men and women who serve in uniform. Our freedoms and our safety are at stake.

We can do better. We can fix the disconnect the Obama administration has created between government and people, by giving the power back to the people. It’s not too late to be a part of a great movement to take America back from a greedy government.

Above all, you should vote April 5 because you are an American. You owe it to yourselves, to vote in favor of limiting the overbearing reach of the federal government. You owe it to yourselves to tell the government that worked hard for your income, and deserve to keep more of it. You owe it not only to your future selves, but also to your future children, to vote to ensure they grow up in an America safer than the one we currently live in. Most importantly, you owe it to the men and women who serve this country, to ensure that we remain a nation worth fighting for. All you have to do is vote.

We also need to turn out to ensure students’ voices are represented in the decision of who may become the leader of the free world. This presidential election cycle has brought out some of the most terrifying aspects of the American conscience.

The demagogic, dystopian Donald Trump has exploited the anger of the American electorate and used it to encourage citizens to express ignorance and hatred.

Unfortunately, this regrettable chapter in American politics has begun to hit close to home. Incidents of hate and bias have been springing up all over our own campus in recent weeks — so many it is difficult to keep up.

A First Wave scholar was spat on and called racial slurs, someone crudely drew a black lynching in a campus bathroom stall, pictures of swastikas were taped on a Jewish student’s dorm door and students yelled racist war cries at a Wunk Sheek event honoring Native American victims of sexual assault. These are just a few examples of the most recent aggressions.

We need to turn out to vote April 5 to reject candidates like Trump and Bradley, who spew this bigotry. While there is a lot of work to do here on campus to deal with these assaults stemming from systemic racism, ensuring Trump never has the opportunity to influence Americans’ thoughts or actions again is a damn good place to start.

Even Republicans have been lining up to defeat Trump. While they are concerned about the damage to their own party, many of them seem to be genuinely concerned about the damage Trump could do to our country.

In a strange twist of irony, Trump could end up being the one thing that unites both parties.

Following the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team’s epic collapse against Notre Dame Friday March 25 in the NCAA Sweet 16, fans were desperate to search for blame.

Whose fault was it? Who should be looked at as the reason for this loss?

Maybe it was junior forward Nigel Hayes, who, on top of yet another disappointing shooting performance, allowed the Fighting Irish’s full-court pressure to get to him when he turned the ball over and allowed the opposition to take the lead.

Or maybe it was junior guard Bronson Koenig, who not only botched the potential goahead layup late in the game, but also allowed Notre Dame junior guard Demetrius Jackson to strip the ball away from him in the closing seconds, disallowing the Badgers to even have a shot to tie it up down three points.

But pinning the blame on one, or even two people, is lazy and unfair.

The fact of the matter is that Wisconsin

should have never been in that situation Friday with about 20 seconds remaining. They should not have needed a go-ahead 3-pointer from junior forward Vitto Brown, nor should they been breaking a press following a quick layup from Notre Dame’s Jackson shortly after.

The Badgers should have ended the game in the first half.

While the start of the game was slow offensively for both teams, with just more than five minutes remaining in the first half, Wisconsin found themselves up 22-13, and the Fighting Irish had not scored a single point in almost four minutes. Notre Dame also had four turnovers in that time.

The Badgers were in a prime position to pull away, and there was a building sense that this team was about to improbably make a return to the Elite Eight for the third consecutive year.

But from that point till the end of the first 20 minutes, Wisconsin managed to score just one point. Notre Dame would pull within four, and despite still holding a lead, no one felt good about where UW stood.

After failing to build upon a nine-point lead early on, the Badgers had yet another

opportunity to put the game away.

Trading baskets with the Fighting Irish for the first five minutes of the second half would open up their lead again. With 13:47 remaining in the game, Wisconsin held a 34-26 lead, and once again, it looked as if the game was firmly in their grasp.

But, three minutes, five missed jumpers and two turnovers later, the Badgers lost their lead once again, and Notre Dame was starting to gain rhythm and confidence once again.

From there, the teams traded baskets, with four turnovers in the final two minutes and an 8-0 Notre Dame run in the final 26 seconds ultimately dooming the Badgers.

It was an outcome that could have been avoided entirely.

“You blink your eyes and the next thing you know Jackson’s shooting two free throws, we’re down five and now we’re going home,” Hayes said.

And while it remains unfair to pin the blame on a single player, pinning the game on one thing is much more reasonable.

That one thing, or things, is the 17 turnovers UW committed over 40 minutes Friday,

something head coach Greg Gard knows is unacceptable.

“I don’t know if there’s a program in the country that prides itself more on taking care of the ball and valuing every possession more than Wisconsin,” Gard said after the game. “I don’t know if there’s anybody that works on it more than we do.”

As a team, the Badgers averaged just 11 turnovers per game this season, and while the 17 that occurred against Notre Dame may feel like an abnormality, it was an abnormality that could not have come at a worser time.

But that’s how March works. The NCAA tournament requires a team to be at its best for 40 minutes on six consecutive nights, and sometimes, the team that may be better on paper doesn’t always play better.

That is a sentiment that Hayes felt following Wisconsin’s crushing defeat. He knew they had this game and knew they let it get away from them.

“I really do believe we should have won this game,” Hayes said. “We have the better team.

We didn’t play well enough, had too many turnovers, but all in all, I’m proud of the team.”

Record-shattering season comes to familiar end Wisconsin falls in NCAA tournament semi-final to Minnesota for third-straight season

Despite a stellar season for University of Wisconsin women’s hockey, it came to a bitter end which the Badgers are all too familiar with.

Wisconsin was on top of the world when the 2015-16 season started, beginning with nine shut-out wins. Even when the shutouts ended, the Badgers kept their momentum going when they won seven more games, including a sweep against rival University of Minnesota-Twin Cities for the first time since 2009.

Going undefeated proved to be quite a challenge, though.

During a difficult weekend against the University of North Dakota, the Badgers suffered their first loss of the season and lost their first place ranking in the NCAA polls.

But the Badgers didn’t let it get them down and came roaring back from a month-long break with new-found determination; the team seen earlier in the year were back in action.

The first test of Wisconsin’s strength came when the Badgers faced North Dakota for their second series. Since North Dakota was the only team to hand Wisconsin a loss up to that point, junior Mellissa Channell knew the team had to put it in the past if they wanted to emerge victorious.

“It’s not fun losing,” Channell said. “Especially against a team that we have such a big rivalry with, but we’re just going to go out and act like that didn’t happen. We’re just going to go out and play our game and hope for a different outcome.”

Wisconsin defeated North Dakota in both games, proving the first series was a fluke, but the best of the season was yet to come.

It seemed as if the season couldn’t get any better than it did on Feb. 14, when the Badgers not only celebrated senior day, but clinched the WCHA regular season title as well. Wisconsin felt as if nothing could bring the team down.

But Minnesota had another idea and made sure Wisconsin’s celebration was cut short. The Gophers handed the Badgers two losses the following weekend, dampening the Badgers’ cheer.

Wisconsin wouldn’t focus on it for long though, with its first WCHA playoff game the next weekend. In hindsight, it wouldn’t appear that UW had just loss to their rivals the week prior to the

game, sweeping Minnesota State twice in the series.

Junior goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens went on to do something that hadn’t been done by any man or woman in NCAA history during the series. She set the NCAA record for the most single-season shut-outs at 21 this season.

Wisconsin was rolling at that point, when they set a team record for shut-outs (23) and won both the WCHA’s regular season and tournament titles.

But with their win over Mercyhurst University came a demon from previous seasons that Wisconsin still needed to face: the semi-final round of the NCAA Frozen Four Tournament.

For the previous two years, the Badgers had faced Minnesota in the semi-final. Both years, they suffered two-point losses to the Gophers and found their season come to an abrupt end. The kind of ending, according to sophomore Emily Clark, that helped to motivate the team this season.

“Last season [was] a hard pill to swallow,” Clark said.

“Especially when you’re ending your season with a loss and not with your goal accomplished. [Taking] the positive spin off of it, you remember that feeling, it’s not fun, and you don’t want to feel it again. I think it’s extra motivation for every one that was there last year.”

With a 2-2 score at the end of the third period, and the game moving into overtime, it seemed like Wisconsin could finally shake the semi-final curse and move on to the final game. That was, until Gopher forward Sarah Potomak found a way to slide the puck past Desbiens and ended the game as well as the Badgers’ season.

The loss pushed Wisconsin’s streak to a three-year drought.

While Wisconsin might be down right now, this season showed that some of Wisconsin’s darkest nights have been followed by its finest hours through their constant resiliency when faced with adversity.

Now, the Badgers have a year until the next semi-final round potentially comes back around. Wisconsin proved this year that it does not simply lay down and count itself out; they have shown they have the potential to make history.

It is only be a matter of time before they overcome the semifinal curse.

Goldsobel: Badgers need to promote creativity, ditch predictability

12-46-13 record over the past two seasons requires shakeup, Michigan could serve as example of what Wisconsin men’s hockey needs

In the shadow of March Madness, the 2016 NCAA men’s hockey tournament began Friday, March 25 and was capped by some of the most exciting hockey of the season.

One game in particular was a sign of what’s to come for the Big Ten, as Michigan squared off with Notre Dame in front of a packed crowd in Cincinnati. With Notre Dame set to join the conference as a hockey-only affiliate member in the 2017-18 season, the game had all the feelings of a rivalry in the making.

It was 60 minutes of end-to-end action featuring two of the best skating teams in the nation and couldn’t be decided in regular time, with the third period ending in a 2-2 tie. But in the end, Michigan’s top line gave Notre Dame a heartbreaking preview of what to expect when they join the conference.

Midway through the first overtime period, J.T. Compher forced a turnover at Notre Dame’s blue line, gained possession and passed out wide to a streaking Kyle Connor. Connor hesitated and then passed back to Compher as he skated past Notre Dame’s goal. Compher,

with his back to the goal as Tyler Motte crashed the net, let a no-look centering pass fly and Motte, in perfect position, smashed a one-timer in for the game winner.

That’s the way this line has played for the Wolverines all season. Their creative, freeflowing play is fun to watch, it’s how hockey should be played and it shows exactly what’s been missing from Wisconsin men’s hockey for some time now — a spark.

On offense, Wisconsin has been formulaic, playing by the boards and settling for long to mid-range shots with limited success. They don’t break down defenses with creative passing or skating. They’re predictable.

It’s a shame Wisconsin plays this way given the talent on the roster in Luke Kunin, Grant Besse, Cameron Hughes and others.

The team went 12-46-13 in the past two seasons and during that time former head coach Mike Eaves repeatedly said the team was young and learning. Understandably, he had to say that to the media, but that doesn’t say great things about the program if it only won four more games in 2015-16 than it did during 201415.

While it’s tough to learn a system and mesh with new players, it seems the Badgers never

did that. They looked stagnant under Eaves’ system and so he was let go on March 18. The move was a big shakeup for the program, which had Eaves at the helm for 14 seasons, and started a national search for a new head coach.

The new head coach will have a tough task at hand to find a way to spark the Badgers’ roster and create chemistry between players who look like they’re playing a system, not playing as lines.

Youth and growing pains cannot be the standard excuse for Wisconsin anymore.

Michigan’s top line does have two juniors on it, but Connor is a freshman. The line was put together this season and grew into the most devastating unit in the country in a matter of months.

That should be the goal for Wisconsin’s next head coach — to group players together so they know each other like the back of their hand and play exciting, creative hockey. Even if the Badgers don’t possess the most talented players, chemistry and creativity can overcome talent.

It makes no-look, behind-the-back centering passes seem easy because the player making the pass knows his teammate will be there crashing the net. When a team plays the way Michigan’s top line does, it can be near unstoppable and

break down defenses time and time again.

That line led Michigan to become the topscoring team in the nation, which averages 4.84 goals per game and overcomes less than stellar defense. It’s a model Wisconsin could follow since the team has consistently struggled to put the puck in the net this season while giving up goals in droves.

Wisconsin allowed 3.63 goals per game this season while only scoring 2.66 goals per game and were last in the Big Ten in shots on goal, but were only outshot by 64 total shots in games this season. They were, however, outscored by 34 goals, which speaks largely about what kind of shots the Badgers are taking versus what kind of shots they’re giving up.

Other teams are breaking down the Badgers’ defense much more often than the Badgers do to other teams.

With declining attendance and revenue, the pressure is on for the Badgers and their next head coach. But taking a page out of Michigan’s book could help propel Wisconsin come next season.

Chemistry creates success. The formulaic play needs to be ditched — it’s time for Wisconsin to get creative with more outlet passes, overlaps and tools of the sort to put pucks in the net.
