Unearthed: How two UW students helped find new human relative Alia Gurtov, Caroline Van Sickle traveled to South Africa to excavate, studied ground-breaking fossils with other early-career scientists

What started as a simple post on Facebook would eventually lead two young University of Wisconsin researchers to become part of a discovery of a lifetime.

The discovery of a new hominin, Homo Naledi, made national and international news Sept. 10 as one of the largest discoveries of hominins in Africa to date.

UW graduate student in anthropology Alia Gurtov woke up one morning in early 2013 and began scrolling through her Facebook newsfeed when she saw a post from Lee Berger, a paleoanthropologist, who had found hominin fossils in a few years earlier in Africa, calling for smallbodied, experienced excavators who were ready to drop everything at a moment’s notice.

Having received a Thomas J Watson fellowship, Gurtov traveled the world for a year pursuing her own independent studies before returning to the States and getting her masters.

Gurtov graduated with an anthropology degree from Wellesley College before getting her masters in Paleolithic anthropology at Leiden University.

Gurtov said using social media has become an increasingly popular practice to share information in the anthropology field.

“These days, at least in the field of anthropology, social media has been a way to stay up to date on new discoveries,” Gurtov said.

After being accepted to the team, Gurtov was one of six women small and experienced enough to crawl through the close dimensions of the cave to retrieve the fossils.

The team itself consisted of early-career scientists from a variety of backgrounds, Gurtov said. Some of these scientists were more anatomically informed, while Gurtov had more of an archeologist excavator and paleoanthropologist background.

“It was great, these are some of the most experienced early-career scientists that you could hope for and they all have a variety of backgrounds,” Gurtov said.

After finishing the excavation process of the fossils, Gurtov was then welcomed back in May 2014 for a five-week workshop in South Africa to analyze and compare the features of this unknown creature’s fossils to some early and late hominins.

While at the workshop, Gurtov was part of the tooth team. The team worked together to analyze and compare a variety of features of the teeth to other early and late hominins.

Joining Gurtov at this workshop was post-doctorate fellow Caroline Van Sickle.

Like Gurtov, Van Sickle too had seen a post on Facebook asking for early career researchers who had data on various types of skeletons and hominins.

As the first Wittig Postdoctoral fellow in Feminist Biology in the Gender and Women’s Studies Department at UW, Van Sickle also teaches biology gender and women studies courses. Additionally Van Sickle conducts research on

hominin gender and sex in the in the Anthropology department.

Van Sickle was already familiar with early hominins, specifically in studying the evolution of the pelvis among these hominins. Van Sickle used this knowledge when she studied the pelvic fossils at the May 2014 workshop in South Africa.

Every body part had to be divided up and studied individually. During the course of five weeks, the fossils of the unidentified creature were compared to known hominins, Van Sickle said. The research showed this was an unusual species.

“It was amazing. It was a really cool experience ... Everyone is as excited about the anatomy of this species as you are so you would talk about it all day long,” Van Sickle said. “It was a phenomenal experience and not a usual one for paleoanthropology.”

Back at UW, Van Sickle recently returned from attending the unveiling of the species in South Africa two weeks ago, while Gurtov returned from London after attending the European Society of Human Evolution meetings.

Though they are both busy with school and their respective research, Gurtov and Van Sickle hope to return South Africa one day to continue research.

“Who wouldn’t want to go back?”

Gurtov said.

Researchers will introduce more information about the anatomy of Homo Naledi in the future.

Discovery could make hydrogen more affordable energy source Professor says newly-found catalyst would decrease cost, uses no rare materials; critic says it is important not to narrow focus to one option

A discovery from a University of Wisconsin professor could make hydrogen a viable, inexpensive fuel option.

University of Wisconsin chemistry professor Song Jin has developed a catalyst that could replace platinum in chemical reactions. Platinum is widely used to accelerate hydrogen reactions, which Jin believes could be a possible alternative to fossil fuels in the future.

Since the new catalyst does not use any rare metals, it costs about 1,000 times less than platinum, Jin said. But it performs almost as well, making it more economical. “[Our] catalyst is a lot cheaper than platinum, the performance is still a little less

[but it’s] getting quite close which is actually why this is a very interesting and exciting discovery,” Jin said. “We hope this will [be used] in the future when people want to make hydrogen.”

In wide scale production, Jin hopes the catalyst will be used in an electrolyzer to generate hydrogen, or in a reaction which generates hydrogen directly from sunlight.

He said the catalyst is a significant step toward using hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels in the future.

“This catalyst will be a small piece of that big puzzle going in to making the hydrogen economy more likely to happen,” Jin said.

“The whole idea is that we would like to use hydrogen as a fuel.”

The appeal of using hydrogen as a fuel is that when hydrogen is burned, it produces water instead of greenhouse gases, Jin said.

Unfortunately, the hydrogen used for fuel now comes from fossil fuels, he said.

Chris Schultz-Buechner, a spokesperson for the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation, said improving efficiency and affordability of all existing energy sources, not just hydrogen, is integral to reducing carbon emissions.

People are already reducing their need for fossil fuels by increasing energy efficiency, she said. Maintaining a variety of fuel sources, so that the U.S. does not become too focused on one source will be key moving forward, she said.

“I think it’s important to have a variety of options available to people so that we’re not just focused on one type of fuel,” SchultzBuechner said. “[So that we don’t] just [have] fossil fuels, renewables or hydrogen available.”

The cost of implementing renewable energy

has continued to drop since 2010, according to an August 2015 report from the International Energy Agency.

But the initial cost of implementing renewable energy in a person’s home still prevents people who would like to utilize it from doing so, Schultz-Buechner said.

“We believe renewable energy should be available to people and a lot of times that first cost is prohibitive to people implementing it,” she said. “We offer loan programs to other states, [and] work with utilities to offer a loan where people could do renewable energy so we can help limit that first cost barrier.”

Right now, fossil fuels are still cheaper than alternative energy sources, but Jin said he sees alternative energy prices falling as the technology backing them improves. In Arizona and California, he said that solar power is almost equivalent to fossil fuel costs.

Budget cuts, construction could impact student jobs on campus

When not in a lab coat, University of Wisconsin graduate student and aspiring American Ninja Warrior contestant Zachary Kemmerer is climbing, jumping or running around the UW campus.

An athlete his entire life, Kemmerer is no stranger to physical activity. He was a top wrestling recruit after graduating high school and a member of the wrestling team at University of Pennsylvania, where he completed his undergraduate degree.

After graduating from Pennsylvania, Kemmerer found his passion for biochemistry and received his master ’s degree from Villanova University.

“I’m trying to make memories, try new things and be the best person that I can,” Kemmerer said. “I really strive to be the total package individual.”

When Kemmerer came to UW last year, a colleague introduced him to climbing at Boulders Gym, where he started to open his eyes to new possibilities. Finding the experience fun, Kemmerer continued climbing and also joined a UW parkour team.

Coupling his newfound interests with his athleticism, he started to see tangibility in taking his extreme sports activity to another level.

Working through the logistics was a concern, Kemmerer said, since graduate students are not allowed to have jobs other than their lab work. But after getting the thumbs up from his department, Kemmerer embarked on his path to become a contestant on the hit TV show American Ninja Warrior.

“People come up and ask me about it, but I feel like I’m getting more attention now even though I’m the same person and just as athletic as when I got here,” Kemmerer said. “Even when I take the elevator, I get some grief for that because people think I can just scale the wall.”

Kemmerer tries to train during “off peak” hours of the day, in order to avoid the busyness that can overwhelm downtown Madison.

Kemmerer said the university is a playground, and a bulk of his training happens around the Mosse Humanities Building. Other places include the Medical Sciences Building and Steenbock Memorial Library. He also said there is good set of rails he uses in front of the building next to the Red Gym. But training for a national competition and the workload of a graduate student

does present its challenges. Kemmerer said it is hard and he has a lot of obligations to his research. Plus, Kemmerer is in the second year of his program, which he said is usually the hardest.

Throughout the juggling though, Kemmerer said parkour and climbing have provided him with outlets to express a sense of discovery he said has always been a part of his character.

And his character on the show is what Kemmerer wants people to see, he said.

Part of the auditioning process includes contestants being able to sell who they are to not only the show, but to the viewers at home. Contestants submit a video documenting their athletic ability, but more so their story and why they’re interesting enough to be on the show.

“I would love to represent the university on a national stage,” Kemmerer said. “It’s just been an unbelievable experience coming out here and trying these new things and going down these different routes. I’m meeting a bunch of people and I’m proud to say this is a life worth living.”

Campus leaders are insisting that although budget cuts will affect students, they will not necessarily take away their campus jobs.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ran a story on Sept. 12, saying budget cuts Gov. Walker signed into law for the University of Wisconsin System earlier this year could affect student jobs on different UW campuses.

But some department heads at UW said they have no plans to make cuts that would affect undergraduate student jobs. Nancy WestphalJohnson, senior associate dean for Undergraduate Education and Academic Administration, said student job wages make up a small portion of individual departments’ expenses.

“We don’t anticipate that there would be cuts to the student hourly budget per se,” WestphalJohnson, said. “Student hourly budgets are not usually a huge part of a department’s budget.”

Departments decide for themselves how they want to spend their funding — and therefore where they will make cuts, according to WestphalJohnson. The biggest part of a department’s budget, she said, are faculty and other staff.

Westphal-Johnson said Letters and Science will be making their budget cuts more centrally this year, and departments are making individual plans for next year.

The departments employing the most undergraduate and graduate students are student academic affairs, chemistry, computer sciences and School of Music and physics, WestphalJohnson said Students might notice the effects of cuts more in departments heavy on research. Faculty that head research labs where students work for credit — or possibly get paid — could be cut, which is what happened in the chemistry department, Matt Sanders, the department’s executive director, said.

Sanders said the department lost faculty positions because of the budget cuts, and this accommodated for the majority of the budget cuts the department was required to make.

Though budget cuts affect graduate students more than undergraduates, he said students who were taking research credits with a faculty member who was forced to leave would no longer be able to pursue that opportunity.

“We’ve been damaged,” Sanders said. “We’ve been hurt by budget cuts. Any future budget cuts would be significant in what we can offer to our students in classes, but also in terms of jobs.”

Mark Hill, chair of the Department of Computer Sciences, said while not many student jobs will be affected, the cuts the department has to make will hurt students overall.

Hill said some undergraduate students work in their computer systems lab, so cuts the

department has to make this fall might affect the number of students they can hire.

“I think the important effect [of budget cuts] is that our major, or even taking a class in computer science, is valuable to people’s 21st century skills,” Hill said. “It would be great if more resources could come our way, but obviously it’s very difficult with budget cuts.”

Outside academic jobs, other positions on campus are being cut for reasons unrelated to the budget cuts.

Memorial Union began the final phases of its construction earlier this summer, and all except the west wing of the building has been closed to the public since Sept. 1, according to the reinvestment website.

“We’ve been hurt by budget cuts. Any future budget cuts would be significant in what we can offer to our students.”

Many undergraduate students who held positions at the Union— like Der Rathskeller — were not able to come back to those jobs because of the renovations.

Stephanie Webendorfer, spokesperson for Memorial Union, said they offered students positions at other markets and cafes at Union South or other campus buildings, but some students did not accept because of location. She said she does not know the exact number of jobs that were cut because of the Union’s construction.

As of the beginning of September, Webendorfer said the Union employs 1,500 students, with an average wage of $9.25 per hour.

Parts of the Union will re-open on a rolling basis, Webendorfer said.

Brendon Dybdahl, spokesperson for Division of University Housing, said students play essential roles in all campus programs.

“The student employees that we have are really crucial to operation,” Dybdahl said. “It’s a staffing level that we kind of need to maintain in order to operate the way that our customers and our residents require us to.”

Musician hopes to strengthen link between Cuba, US through art

With the hope of exposing his students to his country’s culture, Grammy award winning Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González is teaching fall semester residency courses at University of Wisconsin.

Born and raised in Cuba, González’s time there shaped his understanding of music. Coming from a family of musicians, his father was a lead singer of great Cuban bands in the ‘30s and ‘40s. But his father wanted González to attend university and become a true professional; he didn’t see music as a proper career.

González said he was initially a rock and roll musician, because he was influenced by music on the radio. But as he grew older, he started performing traditional Cuban music, and has focused much of his career on this style.

time, but in the end, I decided that the only way to make it was to turn my eyes to the music of my country,” González said.

This desire to play the sounds that fill Cuba’s robust music culture led to the creations of the Buena Vista Social, Sierra Maestra and the Afro-Cuban All Stars. González said he’s glad to keep the prevalent sound of Africa alive in the All Stars music. In 1997, he decided to make the All Stars a project instead of a band, which meant the group’s lineup would switch throughout the years.

Through working with different musicians over the course of his career, González has made lasting connections.

With the help of a close friend and former writing mate for the Sierra Maestra, William Ney from UW’s Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives called González last year with the opportunity to come to Madison.

It’s not his first time teaching a course,

having lectured at universities such as Dartmouth, Cambridge and Oxford.

But González has not been in front of a classroom for 15 years.

This time around, he prepares the coursework and is able to work closely with his students, which he said is “a good time.”

“I am an active musician,” González said. “I work, I perform and I write music.

I prepare albums and produce music for myself and other people too. But I have a bunch of great students so everything is good. I like to be in touch with them.”

And González said he’s learning from his students as much as they are learning from him. When it comes to working with students instead of professionals, González said there’s no difference in the quality of sound that’s produced. While professionals play faster and have the training, González said students have to work and create a plan of what they want to achieve in their

minds.

González hopes his students leave his course appreciating the art and evolution of Cuban music, but he wants them to experience real interaction with Cuban culture.

Because of the strained relationship between the U.S. and Cuba, this generation has a distanced understanding of the country, González said. But the power of the music, he said, will create a link between the countries by helping others see the connections within American and Afro-Cuban music.

González said his country’s music could be commercialized as relations between the U.S. and Cuba improve. But in a century, he hopes people will still play Afro-Cuban and African music.

“Dance and music is very important for Cubans,” Gonzáles said. “We have to dance and we have to play music. Everybody is a musician in my country.”

Madison mural, art installation commemorate local ‘victims of violence’ Lead artists say project gives community outlet for emotional expression, remembrance for those killed in shootings, accidents shot last year.

Another leading artist, Kelty Carew, said most of the Willy Street community knows each victim, but she hopes those who pass by and do not know them still feel a connection. Carew also works with families to create gravestones and monuments for lost loved ones, so she is used to working with people in emotional situations.

Carew said the families of the deceased have been working closely with the artists on the design, and occasionally with hands-on work.

She said the collaborative nature of the mural has made the process take far longer than it would have if there were only a single artist.

“We’ve gone about it in a way that honors everyone’s feelings while also embracing the sentiments too, despite it being a peace mural,” Kilfoy said. “An important part of it is that peace is the ideal but most of the families here are not at peace.”

Carew said the project has already created some profound relationships between artists, families and the community.

Kilfoy said the installation will also include a photo component which they have dubbed “The Hope,” and will feature friends and family

Local artists and community members are working to create an art installation at Madison’s Social Justice Center dedicated to “victims of violence.”

The project will depict victims, including Tony Robinson, as silhouettes doing the activities they loved. Community members and victims’ families continue to work on the installation, which features a mural, a mosaic and painted labyrinth.

Robinson was killed six months ago in Madison, sparking community protests and conversations on racial inequity in the city.

Sharon Kilfoy, a local muralist, said the project was a reaction to Robinson’s death, but also

commemorates six other victims of violence, but not all were killed in officer-involved incidents.

“When [Robinson] was killed my first reaction was ‘This is too close to home’ and then the next day it was ‘No, this is home’ … it’s real personal to a lot of Willy Street people,” Kilfoy said. “This was one of our kids.”

The mural will also depict Paulie Heenan, who was killed by Madison police in 2012, Brendan Scanlon, a local graffiti artist killed by police in Chicago and Shaina Davenport, who died as a result of gun violence as a child in 1999.

It will also feature Conor Dunleavy, who died at 20 in 2012 when a drunken driver hit his car and Fredrica Hanger, who was fatally September 29, 2015 • badgerherald.com • 9

members of those who have been killed by police.

Kilfoy hopes the installation will bring some measure of comfort to the families of the victims, however slight. She said artists are hoping to finish the project in time for a public viewing on Oct. 5, but she does not want to rush any of the artwork.

“For all of us as artists, we feel it’s some of the most important work we’ve ever done …

It’s given these families some real tangible place to put their energy and that’s been a wonderful thing,” Kilfoy said.

Russ Feingold, a 2016 senatorial candidate, and United States Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, promised to dedicate themselves to lowering higher education costs at a University of Wisconsin event Saturday, Sept. 26, but one critic said their approach is “misleading.”

Outlining their specific plans to make college more affordable, Feingold and Warren pointed to the Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act, which Congress failed to pass. The bill would have increased taxes on billionaires in order to allow students to refinance their student loans, Warren said at the event.

Noel Radomski, director of the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education said it is misleading for Democrats and Republicans to say allowing students to refinance their loans would solve student debt. The problem is far more nuanced, he said.

There was no way a bill to allow students to refinance their loans would ever make it through the US Senate or House of Representatives, Radomski said, and even if it did, it wouldn’t really help UW students.

Interest rates are a very minimal cost, he said. Decreasing them might help, but it wouldn’t make much of a difference.

“The real problem with student loan defaults isn’t at UW-Madison,” Radomski said. “It’s at the technical colleges and the two-year colleges.”

Radomski said some students who attend technical schools are more likely to default

on their loans because they aren’t getting financial support from their families and don’t end up with well-paying jobs. Those students, he said, default on their loans and are then stuck.

Warren said she understands the struggles of college students who are being crushed by student loan debt and said she is committed to helping lower higher education costs.

“Every student needs a debt-free option to get a college diploma,” Warren said.

Radomski said after the $250 million dollar budget cuts to the UW System, Wisconsin was the second worst state in cutting funding for higher education in the last two years.

Warren said the U.S. government is capitalizing off student debt, and the federal government made $66 billion in student loan profits from 2006 to 2012.

Warren said Feingold is the kind of senator who will care about college students and working class Americans, not billionaires.

“The people will decide who the senator for Wisconsin is going to be,” Warren said.

“And that’s going to be someone who won’t be there just for millionaires, … it will be someone who will stand up and fight for the people of Wisconsin, and that is Russ Feingold.”

Emily Colo, spokesperson from the Wisconsin Hope Labs, a UW laboratory researching college affordability, said one of the only ways for students to get out of poverty is to get a college education, and they’re unable to do that if college is too expensive at four-year institutions.

Radomski said the major cause of student loan increases is tied to the state’s decrease

in funding for higher education. Even though UW currently has an in-state tuition freeze, Radomski said there will likely be further reductions to the UW System. He expects the tuition freeze will go away in fall of 2017.

Radomski said a lack of funding for the UW System could lead to more expensive student loans and make students more likely to default.

Radomski said he thinks the best way for legislators to solve the student debt problem is to issue a “Maintenance of Effort” policy for higher education. The policy, he said, would take away federal funding from states if they make cuts on higher education.

At an event earlier this month at Ian’s Pizza, where he met with students to discuss college affordability issues, Feingold called for a federally-funded program to provide states with federal dollars to fund their universities.

Colo said other measures legislators could take to make college more affordable would be increasing funding for the federal pell grant, or making the first two years of college free, or debt free.

Feingold last UW visit was in early September, where he talked to students about college affordability. So far, he is the only declared Democratic candidate for US Senate in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin bioscience industry plans to maximize potential Researchers, bioscience company CEOs are joining forces to push for industry growth, improve sector’s marketing

Wisconsin bioscience companies and researchers are rallying behind a recent study which revealed the industry generated $27 billion in economic output and filled 105,000 direct and indirect jobs in 2013.

Members of Bioforward, an association composed of representatives from leading Wisconsin bioscience companies, claimed that a lack of marketing has caused the industry to be overlooked on the national scale at a summit this month.

The summit featured a panel with with Kevin Conroy, Exact Sciences CEO, James Dias, Welbe CEO, Matt Jennings, PhillipsMedisize Corporation CEO and Cynthia Laconte, Dohmen Company CEO, and was designed to spark collaboration between some of the industry’s front-runners.

They discussed developing a joint message to expand Wisconsin’s appeal to investors and young talent.

“We need a single voice and that is not going to happen with two or three people sitting in an office and it’s not going to happen with 10 more sitting on a board,” Laconte said.

Laconte said every single person interested in seeing life sciences “become a force to be reckoned with” in the state is becoming involved.

In addition, Conroy said Wisconsin is projected to experience a doubling of its over-retirement age population in the next 18 years. Jennings said the rapid aging of Wisconsin will enable continued growth in the bioscience industry since there will be more people in need of medical care.

With such a large increase in the number of Wisconsin citizens out of the workforce, the bioscience industry will suffer from a shortage of qualified workers. Conroy said this future problem is a driving force behind the plan to aggressively market for the Wisconsin bioscience industry.

“I think that it is really important to note that with the aging demographic in Wisconsin, there is going to become a huge gap between the number of jobs that are available and the number of people trained and skilled to use them,” Conroy said.

Chad Vezina, UW comparative biosciences researcher, said his research is focused on better understanding why people and some animals have problems with urination as they age, with a long

term goal to develop more appropriate therapies. He said UW bioscience research as a whole has a “unique early role” in developing the “next generation” of therapies which could improve human lives.

the next device manufacturing or the next candidate drug, but it falls short of receiving public appreciation because of a lack of advertising. He said he and some researchers are “isolated” on campus and it has led to a lack of understanding of the importance of their research.

Vezina said part of the budget reduction to UW and the UW System could be because researchers are not meeting their full responsibilities to address the Wisconsin Idea.

“I think we are providing the state with a benefit, but the people of Wisconsin don’t recognize that because the word is not getting out, because people like me are locked in laboratories and not interacting with the rest of the public,” Vezina said.

Masatoshi Suzuki, a comparative biosciences professor, said in an email to The Badger Herald that new findings from UW research functions as “seeds” for new Wisconsin businesses. Suzuki said an increase in state funding to the bioscience industry would be a “win-win” for both the state economy and members of the bioscience community.

The slippery secret to better sex

Far more than a goofy sidekick to condoms, lube has the power to halt painful sex in its tracks, make anal possible, maximize pleasure and even increase condom effectiveness.

Reasons to love lube Besides the obvious benefit of smooth, sexy friction, people use lube for all sorts of reasons. Adding a drop of lube to the inside and outside of a condom improves sensations, keeps the condom from drying

out and prevents breakage. Lube provides the wetness essential for anal play, since the anus is not self-lubricating. Without proper lubrication, tiny tears can occur in the anus or vagina, increasing risk of infection.

Lube also provides the perfect solution to those who suffer from vaginal dryness, according to a 2012 study. People of all ages can experience insufficient lubrication for multiple reasons, including hormonal changes during menstrual cycles, medication side effects, menopause and chemicals in soaps or perfumes. Even dehydration can hinder natural lubrication.

Those interested in adding a little zest to their sex lives can use flavored lubricant for oral sex on penises, but be wary of use in orifices — the sugars can cause infections.

COMPLICATED LAWS THREATEN WISCONSIN’S FUTURE IN ‘GOLDEN AGE OF CRAFT BREWING’

Peter Gentry, owner of Madison’s One Barrel Brewing Company, lost 10 percent of average monthly revenue in the last two months. But, he has been consistently brewing and selling more beer.

Gentry’s conundrum is becoming exceedingly common in Wisconsin as a result of a 2011 law refusing “Class B” liquor licenses to many budding breweries.

The complicated legality threatens beer ’s future in its arguably most popular state.

The three-tier system Gentry’s dilemma dates back to a threetier system implemented in Wisconsin after the Prohibition, said Mark Garthwaite, executive director of the Wisconsin Brewers Guild.

The first tier is producers and brewers, the second is wholesalers or distributors to different retailers and the third is the retailers who sell to consumers, he said.

The system sought to prevent large scale brewers from taking ownership of many different taverns and retail locations, selling only their products and thereby eliminating competition, he said.

It also permitted brewers to hold a Class “B” license for beer and another Class “B” for liquor. This allowed them to sell all types of alcohol within their own tap room while also preventing ownership of any taverns or retail stores of any kind.

But, in the early 2000s, members of the second and third tiers — wholesalers and tavern owners — disputed these licenses, believing it unfair that large, first tier breweries like Budweiser could hog profits if permitted to also sell liquor on their premises, Garthwaite said.

This led to a major law change in 2011 that had unforeseen consequences on small craft breweries in Wisconsin.

Budgetary bamboozlement In the 2011 budget bill, statutes detailing liquor licenses were changed to supposedly accommodate the big-brewery issue.

The bill stated, “No person holding a Class “A” license, Class “B” license or wholesaler ’s permit issued under this

chapter may register as a brewer.”

As a result of this legislation, anyone hoping to obtain a brewing permit after June 2011 could not also sell liquor or wine of any sort in their tap room.

Realizing these restrictions could hurt smaller craft breweries that gain significant profit in their tap rooms and have lower distribution, lawmakers created the “brewpub.”

If a small brewery makes less than 10,000 barrels a year, they can receive a brewpub permit which also allows for a Class “B” liquor license, Garthwaite said.

But this adjustment has not always been successful.

To fight for the right to brew One Barrel Brewing Company makes around 250 barrels of beer per year, well under the 10,000 limit, Gentry said. When he obtained a brewing permit in 2012, it was for a brewpub.

Gentry wanted to expand production, but the only way to seemingly do so under the current law was contract brew at another facility.

Gentry then moved two fermenters into House of Brews in Madison, but that’s when his legal troubles began.

There are “artificial barriers” in the current law regarding breweries, Garthwaite said, and one of these is what Gentry ran into: Brewers cannot maintain status as a brewpub and keep their Class “B” license if they contract brew at another facility.

Gentry tried to speak with politicians to change the law, fight it with his lawyers and even speak with the Department of Revenue, but still nothing has changed.

He finally switched over to a brewery permit two months ago. Since cocktails and liquor have left the tap room at One Barrel, Gentry has seen a 10 percent revenue shortfall.

To make matters more complicated, the 2011 law states that breweries in existence before said year are grandfathered into the right to sell liquor and wine. Thus breweries like Capital and Miller in Wisconsin still have this ability, while places like One Barrel do not.

“It’s been tough,” Gentry said. “I’ve had to make a decision whether or not to expand my production, or keep my liquor

Is the Golden Age of craft beer near its end in Wisconsin?

Garthwaite agrees with Gentry’s assessment, and has seen it throughout Wisconsin.

“We have 130 craft breweries in this state now,” Garthwaite said. “Small, local breweries have a $1 billion impact on this economy.”

This doesn’t just impact craft brewery owners either, but other small business owners, namely equipment manufacturers, packaging companies and those who build

fermenters, Garthwaite said.

Garthwaite said Wisconsin has long been known as the beer state, but this law could allow other states with more favorable laws toward brewers to surpass it in production.

The simple fix is to create a small brewery permit that returns Class “B” privileges to these craft breweries, Garthwaite said.

According to him, there’s also a fourth tier in this system that is affected: the consumers.

“If people love what they’re drinking, then they need to tell their lawmakers this needs to change,” Garthwaite said.

“Otherwise, the Golden Age of craft brewing will be over, at least for the state of Wisconsin.”

UK’s Glass Animals finds eccentric sound in midnight muses Band refuses to use metronome to keep music ‘fresh;’ frontman Dave Bayley talks creative process, flexible live performances

Despite Indie-rock band Glass Animals’ emphasis on production, the up-and-coming group’s devotion to live performance is set to resonate with an amped Sconnie crowd as they bring their eccentric sound across the pond.

In 2014, the English band released their debut album, ZABA, which frontman Dave Bayley described as “louder, weirder and stranger” than anything they’ve ever created.

Tracks like “Gooey” and “Black Mambo” quickly climbed alternative charts, leaving their unique sound effects ringing in ears everywhere.

Unsurprisingly, Bayley’s creative process was less than conventional.

“I always sleep with my laptop next to my bed,” he said. “I’ll wake up really late at night with an idea, roll over and get my little Spanish guitar out and start playing some chords and humming a vocal line.”

After laying down the bare bones of a midnight idea, Bayley said he wakes up the next morning and continues building a song, generally completing the writing portion within a day.

Though writing the music tends to happen quickly, moving into the recording process takes time, as creating the progressive blend of atmospheric electronics and wild instrumental effects found on ZABA involves a great deal of trial and error.

“It’s mainly just me fiddling around with

stuff,” Bayley said of producing the sounds present in the music. “I’ll see a synth that I just kind of like the look of, but I won’t know how it sounds. Then I end up messing around with it … [Sometimes] I’ll go in with a very specific sound in my head and I’ll spend hours trying to get it right.”

In other instances, Bayley draws inspiration from everyday life to create a sound.

“The sounds can be anything,” he said.“I’ll be walking down the road and I’ll hear someone driving over a bag of crisps and they’ll go ‘Pop! Crunch!’”

Though this intensive and intricate production process has made for an avantgarde album, the band prefers to use live instrumentation on stage. While mistakes happen — sometimes quite a bit, Bayley said — Glass Animals refuses to follow a

metronome to keep their music fresh and interesting.

Not only does the band include live instrumentation to create what Bayley deems a “proper live show,” but they tend to mix up their setlist, catering each live experience to the crowd at hand. Whether the isthmus is sleepy or ecstatic, Glass Animals will be prepared.

“We tend to judge the vibe of the crowd,” Bayley said. “If the crowd looks very mellow and tired, we play more of an ambient set and keep things chilled out,” he said. “If the crowd is up and dancing, and if they’ve maybe taken a couple of ecstasies of something, we’ll speed the tempo up a bit, make the base drum a bit louder and have a dance party.”

Glass Animals will play at the Orpheum Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Behind every Madison paper is a Capital Newspapers pressman With journalism in transition, city’s local print company continues to deliver publications while evolving digitally

Every Monday night, The Badger Herald gets a call from Capital Newspapers confirming the Herald’s issue will be on the stands the next morning.

Operating at 40,000 to 60,000 papers per hour, it only takes the company’s three-story metro press machine 10 to 20 minutes to print the Herald’s 10,000 print circulation.

The 21 hours between 9 a.m. to 6 a.m. the next day are spent printing, packaging and delivering publications for Madison readers, Diane O’Dair, Capital Newspapers prepress coordinator, said.

“It’s amazing to see something this big move in unison,” O’Dair said.

“Years ago, we used to print The Onion,” O’Dair said. “And I’m sorry, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. It was almost a footrace to see who could get to the Savage Love column first.”

Behind-the-scenes Capital Newspapers’ press prints five daily newspapers, five or six twice-a-week newspapers and two or three weekly newspapers, not including commercial pamphlets, O’Dair said.

The hissing, beeping and ringing of the press fills the room, shaking the concrete ground. Perspiring workers stand at conveyer belts, inserting ads, sorting page templates and monitoring the press.

Without the cooling system to maintain a temperature of 65 degrees in the pressroom, the operating machinery would quickly push the temperature to triple-digits, O’Dair said.

It takes a Capital employee 25 to 30 years to gain enough experience to operate the intimidating metro press. Starting in the reel room, workers feed boulder-sized reels of paper onto the lower-level portion of the press machine.

“There’s various degrees of skill,” O’Dair said.

“There’s no way you walk in and you run this machine without years and years of training.

Eventually, you work your way up.”

Changing newsrooms Over the course of her 30-year employment at the press, O’Dair has seen a lot of change in the editorial departments.

“Over the years, our newsroom has become emptier and emptier, like every paper,” O’Dair said.

Housed and divided on the same floor, both the Wisconsin State Journal and The Capital Times newsrooms work in parallel to write, edit and publish daily stories.

The sounds of typing and ringing phones fill the paper-littered space shared by scattered reporters.

While the Journal is still publishing a daily newspaper, they have a keen interest in the digital front, John Smalley, Wisconsin State Journal editor, said.

The Journal breaks all of their news online first, he said, which has changed the way of life in the newsroom. “[The shift to online has] had a giant impact on our industry and on my newsroom very specifically,” Smalley said.

In the mid-90s, virtually all newspapers decided to create their own websites, James Baughman, University of Wisconsin journalism and mass communication professor, said.

Capital Newspapers decided to create one site called Madison.com that would allow users to access either newspaper, Baughman said.

The life cycle of a story has changed from what it was about five or 10 years ago, Smalley said.

Stories are born online and built upon over the course of the day.

“We are an industry in transition,” Smalley said.

“There’s no question about that.”

Any longtime press employee knows the threat of the equipment. O’Dair said pressmen, like her husband, are familiar with the loss of a finger to the “ripping and smushing” of rotating rollers.

Still, press workers keep coming back for the next print. Some employees, O’Dair said, stay with the position for as long as 40 years or more.

“When I see these people that are like 65, I think, ‘Oh, you’re a brave soul,’ because it’s hard work,” O’Dair said.

Press workers look forward to the day’s stories as much as Madison’s print audience.

Circulation Part of the transition to digital news has inevitably lessened print readership.

“There absolutely has been a decrease in circulation over the years,” Smalley said. “That’s industry-wide.”

The highest circulation for newspapers industry-wide happened around 1995, Smalley said. For 20 years there has been a “long, slow but steady” decrease in subscriptions.

In 1995, the Journal’s circulation was between 150,000 and 160,000 papers, Smalley said.

Currently, their circulation is 90,000 papers Sunday and more than 80,000 papers during the week.

Twenty years ago, most people in the media industry did not see a decline in print readership coming, Baughman said.

Newspapers had done so well in the past and publishers became complacent.

“I thought you had generations, literally, of Americans who were addicted to reading a newspaper in the morning or in the afternoon,” Baughman said.

Even though print circulation numbers are down, the Journal’s audience is larger than ever due to their Internet platform, Smalley said.

Despite the larger reach through online publication, both The Cap Times and the Journal still depend on print for most of their advertising revenue.

“Newspapers can’t drive the same revenues on the web that they can from a print product,” Baughman said.

Because of this, the advertisement and sales departments hold onto their numbers.

Beneath the emptier newsroom cubicles, the advertising and sales department for Capital Newspapers bustle with the sounds of dealmaking in progress.

“The sales force doesn’t usually go like other people do,” O’Dair said. “They’re always here because you need your sales people.”

The advertising and marketing departments at Capital Newspapers has “embraced the digital component of the business” in a similar way to the editorial departments, Smalley said.

There are some staff members solely focused on selling digital advertising, Smalley said.

Madison’s taste for print Madison has a unique “vibe” where people like printed products more than digital products, O’Dair said.

“Madison has always been unique in the fact that papers really do well here,” O’Dair said. “It’s always been a sort of island to itself. Madison is nothing like any other city in the state, whether you go north, south or east.”

The market in Madison is a very educated market relative to other markets, Smalley said.

“There’s a lot of very well-read people in town, people that like to consume news and information,” Smalley said.

On the other hand, those same people are very technologically savvy, Smalley said.

They are inclined to read news not only in print, but online as well.

This trend can be traced back to 1980, Baughman said. Los Angeles had a relatively low household presence in 1980 compared to Washington D.C. Similarly, Madison has kept its affinity for print, Baughman said.

Different print newspaper markets have different penetration rates, Baughman said, because different markets have different proclivities for reading print newspapers.

Though the shift to digital has been part of The Badger Herald’s focus for a while, Madison’s taste for print has kept its weekly paper moving off the stands. Once the Herald is hot off Capital Newspapers’ presses, its pages are loaded into distribution trucks and delivered across campus.

Meanwhile, Capital’s press continues to churn out newspaper after newspaper.

Keg stands and “Jump Around” are just a few ingredients that help make the University of Wisconsin the number one college football town in America. But, since 2010, Madison’s game day has not been complete without “Teach Me How to Bucky.”

The viral video showcases everything from band leader Mike Leckrone with his drumline to a dancing Chancellor Rebecca Blank.

The video’s millions of viewers can thank a certain UW alumnus: Beef.

Clifton Beefy was the rapper everyone saw and heard rap in Teach Me How To Bucky back in 2010, and now in 2015, Beef is out in Los Angeles working on his second studio album Chapter 2.

With a name like Beef, the rapper raises the question of how serious he might be about his music. But, his lyricism exhibits how committed Beef really is to his craft.

The rapper describes himself as a poet; his music is “about the words.” Beef attributes writing poetry at a young age as foreshadowing for his future lyrical aptitude.

The former Badger ’s depth can be seen in his new single, “Outer Space.” The track discusses depression and loneliness, creating a parallel between the emptiness of space and mental illness. The uncanny and psychedelic samples are key features in the tone of the song.

“It is me going through hell and how to navigate it,” Beef said.

He said it’s possible to be lost in the midst of the desolation; but the project signals the light at the end of the tunnel.

Despite its galactic title, “Outer Space” features some familiar faces; two of Beef’s past collaborators, Phonetic ONE and Zu, are former members of UW’s First Wave program. Though he was never a formal member of First Wave, Beef always collaboratd with the talented group of individuals, and he cites the pair as the song’s “heart and soul.”

While Beef is originally from the north side of Madison and spent a lot of time on campus, he is hoping to channel the south side in his work. It’s the harder, run-down side of Madison — one most UW students don’t get to see — which becomes the basis for a lot of Beef’s lyrics.

UW is a huge institution that, often, leaves people to fend for themselves, which Beef said made him more independent as a musician and businessman. He said he wants to bring the importance of a collective community to UW’s campus, because it’s something people shouldn’t take for granted.

This is a pursuit the rapper doesn’t take lightly; Beef’s first release, Zooniversity, is a UW concept album about his alma mater. It’s an album made to be relevant to the typical UW student, including a song most coasties know as the bane of their existence, “Coastie Song.”

Beef may be out in LA now, he is always repping his hometown on the West Coast because — as Beef himself puts it — “I got some Wisconsin shit to say.”

Free two-year college should be reality throughout state Milwaukee Area Technical College’s subsidized tuition program for low-income students could prove catalyst to breaking cycle of poverty

Free two-year college is a hot topic nationally and Wisconsin needs to get on board before it’s left in the cold.

In January of this year, President Barack Obama called for free community college across the U.S. modeled after the Tennessee Promise, a program offering free community college to Tennessee high school graduates.

Oregon made waves by announcing a similar program over the summer. Most recently, and closest to home, Milwaukee Area Technical College announced the MATC Promise.

This program, which would offer free tuition to low-income graduating high school students, is tremendous news for people who want to see economic growth and increased access to education.

Milwaukee can certainly benefit from increasing access to higher education.

Currently, 83 percent of Milwaukee Public School students qualify as low-income, which presents a huge hurdle to anyone wanting to continue their education.

With state dollars continuing to siphon from the state’s largest school district to wealthier communities in the suburbs, the MATC Promise could be a catalyst for thousands of individuals to break out from a cycle of poverty. Wisconsin should follow MATC’s lead and institute a “Wisconsin Promise” at all two-year University of Wisconsin colleges.

Last fall, I called for a bipartisan effort to create a Wisconsin Promise modeled after the Tennessee Promise. After all, Tennessee is also governed by a conservative Republican governor who was one of the strongest backers of the new program as an engine of economic growth.

If Republican-led Tennessee can support more inclusive and expansive higher education in the name of economic growth, why can’t Wisconsin?

To be clear, a Wisconsin Promise program already exists but it is separate from these calls for free community college. For the sake of rhetorical consistency, I use Wisconsin Promise to refer to a hypothetical new program.

Since the introduction of the Tennessee Promise, the results make the case for a Wisconsin Promise even clearer.

In the first year of the Tennessee Promise eligibility, Tennessee schools saw a sharp increase in both raw enrollment numbers and in the number of students who are registered for a full course load, which is a

With many of the UW System’s twoyear institutions located in rural or economically depressed areas, this increase in enrollment would be a boon for both the students and communities to develop skills and education needed for economic growth.

Regardless of your opinions toward two-year degrees, research shows there is significant added value for students who obtain an associate’s degree before transferring to a four-year institution.

The degree stands on its own as a substantial benefit compared to just earning a high school diploma. As Republicans have been arguing for years,

we need more graduates of community and vocational colleges.

The biggest hurdle to a Wisconsin Promise, however, remains the general Republican hostility to all educationrelated expenditures that don’t go to vouchers or charter schools. This is a subject void of all sensibility and rationality in favor of delusional arguments over tyrannical teachers and bureaucrats.

This shouldn’t be a partisan issue. The cost is minimal and since it is a ‘last dollar ’ program, funds will only cover what other programs do not.

Additionally, there are requirements built into the program to ensure recipients are performing well and focused on their

studies. This should be good news to Republicans who have spent a good deal of time making sure recipients of state aid are being constantly monitored for any signs of excess or waste.

Seriously, this could happen in Wisconsin, but it won’t until people from across the state start asking for it. I encourage you to write to your assembly representative and state senator — you can find yours here — and ask them to support a Wisconsin Promise. It’s a promise we can’t afford not to make.

POINT COUNTERPOINT College Republicans: Tenure commonly misconcieved, creates ‘publish or perish’ mentality, inhibits young professors Four years ago, since Act 10, teacher tenure in our state has come under the microscope. More recently, with budget cuts to the university and a restructuring of our system, many are scrutinizing professor tenure.

There are many misconceptions about what this change means for our professors and University of Wisconsin. The main misconception is that the budget passed this summer by our state government takes away all forms of tenure. That is simply not the case.

The budget takes away tenure when there are budget constraints or changes in departments. This allows UW to make the right choices about teachers who are worth paying for, not the Legislature or governor, but the people that know the needs of our university best to make it the most efficient it can be.

Beyond budgetary issues, with the technology revolution and our changing economy, new departments need more funding and better and brighter professors to staff them. Removing teacher tenure will allow UW to allocate professors where students need them most.

The main argument for keeping teacher tenure is the idea of ‘chilling speech,’ meaning professors would not be able to say what they want without fear of termination.

But the budget does not get rid of all teacher tenure. Tenure that protects the chilling speech problem is still in play.

But this argument didn’t do much to calm the professors who felt very passionate about the chilling effect when they protested the move of tenure provision out of state statute and to the Board of Regents.

The chilling effect actually occurs most often when tenure is established. Theoretical physicist, Lee Smolin, argues tenure actually chills the youngest and brightest scientists’ speech because to achieve tenure, you have

to fall in line with the standards set forth in the field and you are not free to challenge those standards.

Smolin argues by limiting young professors’ speech in their formative years, they are enlisted to a life of playing by the rules.

The argument Smolin makes is the same argument that goes against the idea that tenure attracts the best and the brightest.

Tenure is not why the best young minds become professors. They become professors by the attraction of academia and the ability to explore their passion. Tenure does not allow young professors to do that, but rather puts them on a rigid path to conformity.

Now let’s talk about us, the students.

According to a Northwestern educational policy study, students learn more from nontenured professors.

When professors aren’t concentrating on the motto “publish or perish,” making sure they publish as many works as possible for their tenure committees, they actually focus on teaching, thus making them better teachers.

Columbia University professor Mark Taylor recalls a young associate professor being told not to put teaching awards on his résumé because it looks bad to a tenure committee that only values published works.

Our education system should be about just that: education. Tenure devalues why we pay to go to this great university, the simplicity of receiving a world-class degree from a world-class institution from worldclass teachers.

We all value the education we receive here at UW — Republicans and Democrats alike. We just want to make sure students are valued just as much as professors.

The policy jurisdiction Walker gives himself during budget season is unprecedented. Walker’s 2015-17 budget went far beyond its purpose, attaching numerous hyper-partisan policy items that were unrelated.

The budget included provisions to drug test welfare recipients, expand voucher schools and strip multiple expert boards of their active power, turning them into mere advisory committees and vast changes to the UW System, including the dismantling of shared governance and professor tenure.

In a listening session with faculty, Chancellor Rebecca Blank may have put it best when she declared, “Tenure exists not to protect individuals, but to protect ideas.”

Blank hit the nail on the head. When Republicans try to shift the narrative to unearned job security, they are disrespecting the entire history of innovative ideas born out of the safetynet that tenure provides professors.

When Galileo proposed that the earth was not the center of the universe in the 17th century, he was placed under arrest for the blasphemous idea.

Galileo was brave enough to not back down from his ideas even in the face of arrest, but had tenure existed at the time, Galileo would have been safe from persecution.

We need tenure to protect the sanctity of innovative ideas.

Today, academia is still controversial. Just this month, debate has erupted over the use of fetal tissue in research. As Republicans in the Capitol are entertaining a ban on this research, UW faculty are speaking out about the vast scientific value.

More than 700 faculty recently sent a letter to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel expressing the harm the bill would have on research. Without tenure, professors could very well lose their job for speaking up in favor of fetal tissue research.

This hypothetical becomes all too real when

taking into account the fact that the Board of Regents, who would hold the power to fire professors, is made up largely of Walker appointees.

It is ironic that the tenure changes are poised to hurt conservative professors the most. Two conservative professors at UW, Donald Downs and John Sharpless, published an article in Politico voicing their deep concerns about the tenure changes.

In a biting response to the attacks Republican lawmakers have waged on tenure, Downs and Sharpless said, “Outnumbered and often targeted for our beliefs by members of the campus left, constitutional conservatives like us — who take individual liberty, freedom of speech and academic freedom very seriously — have long relied on tenure to protect our right to dissent and to preserve the free exchange of ideas in academia.”

While it is true the Board of Regents have said they intend to maintain tenure in some capacity, they will, from now on, hold the power to arbitrarily change the policy if they so choose.

There is no longer anything standing in the way of the Board of Regents’ agenda. Tenure has historically been strong in Wisconsin and enjoyed its codification in state law. That is all gone now.

These changes to tenure policy will hurt not only professors, but UW students, as well. Without tenure protections, many professors are leaving for jobs at other universities where they can express their ideas freely without the worry of job loss.

Students will feel the blow as the best professors leave and the overall quality of education at UW declines.

Furthermore, the precedent has been set that the budget process is open-season for the majority party to push controversial policy items unrelated to the budget. This is a slippery slope that will inevitably lead to more extreme policy enacted under the guise of the budget.

Why Scott Walker’s presidential campaign came to a grinding halt Given his abysmal performance in low-scrutiny portion of election season, it was clear governor was not ready for national stage

The roller coaster ride that was Gov. Scott Walker’s presidential campaign has come to an abrupt end.

He and his staff are departing from the campaign gate. Many were expecting Walker to be a possible frontrunner for the GOP nomination, and many are wondering why he crashed and burned so hard and so early.

In May, the governor ranked at the top of the Republican field in the all important, firstin-the-nation Iowa caucus polls, averaging 17.5 percent support, 7 points ahead of establishment candidate Jeb Bush.

As the anti-establishment candidates rose to the top of the polls, however, Walker careened to fourth place, garnering only 6.7 percent of likely Republican voters according to the Huffington Post’s poll aggregation — far behind businessman Donald Trump, neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Sen. Ted Cruz.

Walker was doing even worse nationally, with an embarrassingly low 2.5 percent. In the latest CNN poll that was released after its Republican debate, Walker was polling at a dismal 0 percent.

Three months ago, the chances of Walker ending his campaign in late September were slim to none. His conservative credentials and ability to implement policy won the hearts of conservative firebrands and establishment Republicans alike.

The proximity of Wisconsin to Iowa gave Walker an invaluable advantage to win; arguably, the most important primary in the race.

If Walker is looking for reasons as to why his campaign crashed and burned, he need only to look in a mirror. He repeatedly made suspicious policy proposals on the campaign trail, such as the

abolishment of federal government employee unions and the infamous Canadian border wall.

Walker’s ‘head in the sand’ moment surely came when he compared fighting the global terrorist organization, the so-called Islamic State, to ‘taking on’ the protesters that occupied Capitol Square as his party pushed anti-union legislation through the state legislature.

He was also incredibly inconsistent with his policy stances. For example, before the presidential race, Walker was considered a moderate on immigration, but after Trump’s hardline approach on the issue became popular, Walker took a more nativist stance. During the campaign, his views on the issues were so flippant.

Some things, however, were not within Walker’s control. The Republican primary has been overtaken by candidates with no prior experience in politics. Polls currently show Trump comfortably in the lead and former HewlettPackard CEO Carly Fiorina surging to the forefront.

Though Walker tried to portray himself as a political outsider by traversing the country on his

Harley-Davidson, it was hard to hide the fact he held political office for 22 years.

Given his abysmal performance in the lowscrutiny portion of the presidential election, Walker was not ready for the national stage, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. Even though he has been elected three times in the past five years, two of these elections were during midterm years, during which Republicans are more likely to be successful, and the other was during the controversial gubernatorial recall election.

The candidates Walker ran against, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and former State Secretary of Commerce Mary Burke were lackluster candidates who never had the political gusto to draw Democrats to the polls and convince Independents to pull the lever for them.

Ultimately, Walker did to himself what the Wisconsin Democratic Party failed to accomplish: demonstrate to moderates and conservatives he is incompetent as an executive office holder.

Walker now joins the likes of former Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani and former Gov. Rick Perry as seemingly formidable candidates who couldn’t handle the heat of the national spotlight.

Given the carnival ride that was the Walker presidential campaign, the best decision he has made lately was to pack his bags and come back home to Madison.

Diversity in journalism hasn’t been discussed much in mainstream publications, but with the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement and increased coverage of the killings of unarmed black men in this country, it’s something that needs to be addressed.

At the beginning of the month an upstart blog Madison365 published an op-ed by Rev. David Hart titled, ‘If You’re White, You’re Alright,’ which addressed the lack of minorities in Madison’s newsrooms.

Shortly after the article was published, Wisconsin State Journal columnist Chris Rickert responded via Facebook and dismissed Hart’s article by listing a few names such as Ogechi Emechebe, a reporter and recent hire for the Capital Times, as well as three TV reporters and a TV morning anchor.

Rickert said there are plenty of voices — of all colors — in the media. He added that

in his opinion it doesn’t matter that people of color have not regularly been hired at newspapers around the country because they have their own publications.

It’s okay to look at the progress made and be satisfied with that. But to imply the color quota has been reached in print news is nothing short of insulting.

Print is still one of the most universally respected news sources. It is troublesome that there is a diminutive amount of minorities at these places.

The Capital Times only has one person of color listed on their editorial staff. Even worse, Rickert’s employer, The Wisconsin State Journal, has an editorial staff of 50 plus, yet has as many people of color on said staff as I have Superbowl rings — none.

Overall for the city of Madison’s mainstream publications, only about 4 percent of full-time editorial staffs are

minorities. This is considerably lower than the average of 13 percent nationwide.

Rickert can’t just disregard this fact by saying there are smaller publications for minorities to write at, especially if they don’t have the financial support and readership these larger publications have.

Madison365 had to resort to a kickstarter, making a public appeal for donations just to get their operation up and running.

The readership is smaller with blogs like Madison365 and their important messages don’t reach many of the people who actually need to hear them.

Middle class white Americans aren’t reading Ebony. But they are reading newspapers like the New York Times and the Wisconsin State Journal. More minorities in these publications might just ensure these messages reach those who need to hear them.

What people like Rickert need to realize

is simply having a minority presence is not enough. I, like many others, stay motivated by seeing diversity in high-ranked positions.

It’s easy for someone like Rickert, who facilitates and sees perspectives that mirror his own, to think there is a sufficient amount of alternative viewpoints from minorities.

But the truth is we are shortchanging the entirety of societal discourse when we put quotas on perspectives.

Diverse perspectives are important and drive true change. If Rickert wants to render these perspectives to a quota system, then it’s sounding more and more like he is standing in the way of that change.

Tractor Traylor: Fifth-year senior breaks out in final season as a Badger Wisconsin tight end caught 100 passes per day during offseason to improve receiving skills

Austin Traylor knew he had to get better.

The fifth-year senior tight end was lined up to become the No. 1 tight end on the Wisconsin football team’s depth chart, but had never caught a pass in his career at University of Wisconsin.

Sure, he had been targeted before, but the passes wound up on the ground, evading the clutches of his receiver-gloved grasp and causing Traylor frustration and disappointment.

So when Paul Chryst and his staff took over this past January, Traylor asked, “How do I get better?”

UW offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Joe Rudolph had an answer.

Catch 100 balls a day, he said. You will get better, he said.

And “an answer” turned out to be “the answer.”

Now, in his final year as a Badger, Traylor has transformed himself from a blocking tight end to one of quarterback Joel Stave’s most sure-handed targets.

“They talk about the great wide receivers of the game, who regardless of how good their hands are, will always stay after practice and catch a few extra balls,” Stave said. “I think Traylor took some of that mindset into his own.”

The results jump off the stat sheet. In Traylor ’s career prior to 2015 it read: no passes, no catches. But this season, Traylor already has eight catches for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

But the work had to be put in first.

needed to do, Traylor was going to catch 100 balls a day.

Whether he was using a machine or tossing the pigskin with redshirt sophomore wide receiver Rob Wheelwright, Traylor caught the ball every day, even if it meant going into the locker room during the bitter Wisconsin winter.

“It’s paying dividends now as you can see,” Traylor said. “When the ball’s coming my way, I don’t even second-guess it, I know it’s going to be a catch.”

Rudolph had implemented the 100 ballsa-day technique with other UW tight ends, like Lance Kendricks (now with the St. Louis Rams), when he served as that position coach from 2008-11.

Rudolph and Chryst are known to use their tight ends quite a bit in their offensive scheme, and Traylor has noticed a significant uptick in the number of targets javaden-badgerherald-2015.pdf 2 9/2/15 4:43 PM he’s getting.

“Having the confidence from the coaching staff helps a lot,” Traylor said.

All three of his scores have come in the Badgers’ last three consecutive games against Miami (Ohio), Troy and Hawaii. His first touchdown came On campus. In Grand Central. on a back-shoulder 1022 W. Johnson St. throw from Stave in the middle of the end zone. Traylor made an acrobatic play to corral the ball.

goal line. Traylor fully extended and came down with the ball, but fell at the two-yard line.

Traylor said he was disappointed because he thought the coaching staff would just call a play to run it in. Not so fast.

The play-action call came into the huddle, and Traylor perked up. He got what he deserved and had his second touchdown of the season near the right sideline by the student section.

in the middle of the Rainbow Warriors’ defense and Stave delivered a dart.

Over the last few seasons, Wisconsin has had the luxury of having effective tight ends in the passing game with guys like Jacob Pedersen and Sam Arneson.

Pedersen caught 17 touchdowns in his career at UW, and Arneson, as a primary target last season, caught 29 passes for 387 yards and a team-high four receiving touchdowns.

Traylor is now simply continuing that trend. Having predecessors put up those numbers not only motivated Traylor, but helped him become the player he is today.

“Being around those guys definitely helped me a lot,” he said.

That said, Traylor molded himself into a unique tight end not only through natural ability, but also dedication and thousands of hands snatching footballs.

Traylor ’s success comes as little surprise to Chryst because hard work pays off, Chryst said.

“He did it. He did more than that,” Chryst said. “But that was an example of where he’s going to take it literally and do everything he can to give himself a chance to be the best he can.”

Iowa has found a solid balance between passing and running in 2015.

The ability to mix up play calls has allowed the Hawkeyes to average 37.8 points per game on 429.2 yards per game.

Junior quarterback C.J. Beathard represents that dual-threat offense in his own play as well. After seeing limited action the past two seasons, Beathard has come into his own and

developed his running alongside passing.

In 2015, he has had six passing touchdowns and one interception thrown, 962 total passing yards, a 68.2 percent completion rate, 151 total rushing yards, a 5.6 yards per carry average and three rushing touchdowns.

That isn’t to say running back Jordan Canzeri hasn’t shared the load though.

On the other side of the ball, the Hawkeye defense, which has been consistent in most respects, is vulnerable to passing attacks and has allowed 210.8 passing yards per game.

But a stout run-defense, allowing only 84 rushing yards per game, could place a lot of pressure on Wisconsin’s passing attack to perform.

Iowa, on average, gives up only 84 rushing yards per game, and has the sixth best total defense alongside the fourth best rushing defense in the conference.

Coupled with the third best total offense

in the Big Ten, 439.2 yards per game, they pose a legitimate threat to the Badgers.

However, their inability to finish drives with touchdowns could place a lot of pressure on the defense to hold back a dual-threat Wisconsin offense the Hawkeyes didn’t see last year in Iowa City.

After two strong showings by the Fighting Illini to open the year, in which they averaged 48.5 points per game, a stumble against UNC has the team at 2-1.

The fifth best scoring offense in the Big Ten, averaging 34.2 points per game, and averaging 404.8 yards per game has boasted a consistent running game. A tandem between Josh Ferguson,

4.9 yards per carry, and Ke’Shawn Vaughn, 4.4, has provided a onetwo punch for a team that has traditionally lacked any sort of running-game.

Tim Beckman’s firing a week before the season hasn’t made things easy on Illinois this year, but so far it has been a valiant showing for a team lacking a stable hierarchy.

The Cornhuskers’ defense has given up 26.5 points per game alongside 453 yards per game.

Without a solid defense, Tommy Armstrong Jr., first in the Big Ten in passing with 316.5 yards per game, will have to step up in his second attempt to beat Wisconsin.

Oct. 17: Purdue at Wisconsin, Camp Randall, 11 a.m. CT Purdue is in the midst of well, another average year for Purdue.

An opening loss to Marshall and a 51-24 thrashing at the hands of Virginia Tech highlights the defensive woes that have lingered from last season. The Boilermakers have allowed opponents to average 440.2 yards per game and given up 35.2 points per

game.

Austin Appleby’s 5-6 touchdown to interception ratio hasn’t helped Purdue supplement its defensive woes with offense. D.J. Knox’s rushing average, 3.9 yards per carry, is nothing to highlight either.

Something special will have to happen for this to not end in another blowout for Purdue.

Oct. 31: Rutgers at Wisconsin, Camp Randall, TBA Rutgers’ transition into the Big Ten hasn’t been easy, but a fantastic job with limited resources in their inaugural season in 2014 has put 2015 to shame.

Losses to Washington State and a particularly heavy 28-3 loss at Penn State have Rutgers searching, albeit dazed, for wins.

Sophomore quarterback Chris Laviano’s inexperience has shown in his five interceptions, hindering

six touchdowns and a 72 percent completion rate. The Scarlet Knights will need him to settle down behind a steady committee running game that features two backs averaging 6.1 and 6.0 yards per carry, respectively, in order to keep offensive balance.

While the Scarlet Knights remain a middle of the pack team in nearly every respect, last year’s win against Michigan serves as a reminder of what this team is capable of.

This Saturday marks the opening of conference play for Wisconsin. Coming out of non-conference play with a 3-1 record and a No. 19 overall ranking, the Badgers’ path to the Big Ten Championship is favorable, playing only one currently ranked team for the remainder of the year.

Here is a breakdown of the remainder of the season’s matchups against Wisconsin’s conference opponents.

Nov. 28: Wisconsin at Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, TBA The fight for Paul Bunyan’s axe may not decide the West division this year, but it will still be a hotly contested game.

Minnesota narrowly lost to No. 2 TCU in their season opener by six points, and has since won three games, rather unconvincingly, against mid-tier out of conference opponents.

The Golden Gophers are dead last in the Big Ten in scoring offense, 19.2 points per game, but have also allowed opponents to

With freshman running back Rodney Smith averaging only 4.4 yards per carry with 363 total yards, and quarterback Mitch Leidner throwing only four touchdowns to two interceptions and a 58.3 percent completion rate, that defense will have to continue to play lockdown.

Maryland averages 29.5 points per game, but seven total interceptions have stalled drives at crucial times. With a defense that allows 32.8 points per game, the Terrapins can’t afford to have these turnovers carry over to conference play.

While not the most exciting team offensively, the Wildcats have been stalwart on defense.

Northwestern has allowed opponents to average only 8.8 points per game, the third lowest total of all FBS schools, against formidable out of conference opponents. Most notably in a season opening 16-6 victory over No. 21 Stanford followed by wins over Eastern Illinois, Duke and Ball State.

At 4-0, the Wildcats have boasted a very steady offense that has limited turnovers.

While scoring hasn’t been explosive, Justin Jackson’s 516 total rushing yards have allowed Northwestern to move the ball and kill clock time, keeping their elite defense rested. If that defense continues its success, this may be the game that decides the Big Ten West.

Attacking midfielder provides spark for UW in first two wins of season Sophomore Christopher Mueller has played a key offensive role, helping Wisconsin achieve its first conference victory since 2013

After starting the season 0-4, the Wisconsin men’s soccer team needed a jolt of creativity and energy.

This spark came from sophomore midfielder Christopher Mueller ’s play.

Mueller scored his first career goal for the Badgers in dramatic fashion Sept. 11 at Rutgers. With the final seconds ticking off the clock in double overtime, Mueller received a pass into the box and sent his shot flying past the goalkeeper into the upper left corner of the net.

The sophomore had given the Badgers their first win of the season, and it could not have come at a better time, Mueller said.

“It was just huge to come away from Rutgers on the road with three points from a goal that we pulled off right in the last second,” he said. “It was unbelievable. It was a big moment for me.”

The goal gave the Badgers their first

conference win since 2013.

Mueller ’s game-winning goal earned him a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week of Sept.

14. SportsCenter ’s “Top 10 Plays” segment also featured the goal. [link] The Schaumberg, Illinois native followed up his game-winner against Rutgers with another stellar goal to give Wisconsin a 2-1 win on the road at St. John’s. Mueller drew a foul from 25 yards out, and he stepped up to send the resulting free kick fizzing past the Red Storm goalkeeper.

Mueller said Trask demands different things from his players, and the head coach agreed.

“The big thing for [Mueller] at this point in his career is we’re asking a lot more of him as an attacking midfielder,” Trask said. “He’s still young ... It’s about getting the balance of how many touches he takes and who he’s feeding — that’s just all part of the maturing of a player in that role.”

Mueller has put in extra work in the offseason to aid in this maturation, getting more fit and being more willing to work defensively, he said.

A key aspect of Mueller ’s game that has allowed him to make an impact this year is his body type.

Standing at 5-foot-9, Mueller is the perfect size for a soccer player, according to Trask. Last year, Trask said Mueller wasn’t physically ready to compete for the 26 • badgerherald.com • September 29, 2015

Then you compliment that with not just tricks, but once the ball’s on his foot, he’s one of those guys who’s faster with the ball than he is without it.”

Physical attributes aside, Mueller brings a unique dynamic to the offense playing in the attacking midfielder role.

Trask said Mueller is a clever player, and that he uses his intelligence well during the game.

Mueller has already improved immensely from his freshman season.

Last year, he tallied one assist and 12 shots in 16 appearances for the Badgers.

So far this season, Mueller has already proven to be the biggest offensive threat for UW. Through seven games, the sophomore leads the team in points (five), goals (two) and is tied for the lead in assists (one). Mueller has started the past three games for the Badgers, and is likely to far surpass his number of five starts from the 2014

campaign.

Playing in the attacking midfielder role, Mueller says he tries to model his play after Eden Hazard, a professional soccer player for English club Chelsea FC. “[Hazard]’s really good on the ball and works hard defensively,” he said.

“He’s just super creative — a magician.

I love to watch him play.”

In just one season, Mueller has come a long way, producing bright moments and good minutes. But Trask said the coaching staff is still looking for more consistency out of the young midfielder.

If Mueller can find that consistency, Trask believes he can leave a lasting impact in his last seasons for the Badgers.

“We always knew that [Mueller] was a special attacking player,” Trask said.

“To know that he’s got over two and half years left in this program, he can really make his mark in college soccer and at Wisconsin with what he can bring to the table.”

Apple iPhone 6s to compensate for complete lack of social skills Business major claims pricey smartphone better than individuality Donald Somerville, a newly admitted business school student, began his day on a high note Monday when he was asked to describe his top three strengths in his Gen Bus 100 class. His desk partner, Alice Jackson, said she was confused by his response.

“I told him the three strengths I always say for things like this: positivity, creativity and nice,” Jackson said. “When I was done, he awkwardly paused for about a minute and just started talking about his new iPhone.”

“My three strengths are: it has all sorts of apps, sends me notifications and comes in several trendy colors,” Somerville said.

Somerville’s description of his iPhone 6s also drew the attention of other puzzled students in the room, as well as his professor. James Burton, Gen Bus 100 instructor, was completely taken aback by Somerville’s response to the activity.

“Normally, we hear pretty mundane responses from students when they’re asked what their strengths are, but there

was something odd about Donald,” Burton said. The way he chose to describe the strengths of his most valuable possession instead of himself was strange and off-putting, yet somehow inventive and engaging.”

Somerville has been known as more of an introvert throughout his college career, according to his peers; his new fame among students and staff at the business school has made him feel a little weird, but he is now comfortable with talking about himself.

“Oh, yeah. I could talk about myself all day, or, as we say in the business school, I could network all day. I mean, it has email, a superior camera, personalized touch, upgraded features, tons of space for data and is really lightweight. What else do you want to know about me?”

As of press time, Somerville said he thinks everyone should have a new smartphone every year to “further develop one’s demeanor and personalty.”

Learning curve steep for bike placement on bus Lack of prior knowledge inhibits cyclists daily, perplexed bus rider said For the first time ever, University of Wisconsin senior Adam Koenig attempted to place his Schwinn road bike on the 10 bus Monday on his way to work. Koenig allegedly refused to engage in the process at any time before; he said it was very difficult to figure out how to exactly secure his bike to the front of the bus.

“It was quite the challenge,” Koenig said.

“There was a reason I had never done it before, and that reason was fully realized Monday. I struggled to figure out the method to putting it on the rack, how to strap it on the bus, and to do it in short enough of time to not have the entire bus angry at me, no less.”

about transporting one’s bike on the bus.

Patrons of the bus are expected to “just put it on the rack” with relative ease, even the first time doing so.

“Well, you know, just get it up on there, it’s not rocket science,” Metro bus driver Yvonne Smith said. “I mean I probably couldn’t figure it out personally, it looks like a complicated process, but people do it all the time, so I’m sure it’s doable. Somehow.”

Koenig said he doesn’t agree with this philosophy, claiming it was not an easy feat to get his bike on the bus. In the process of mounting the bike, Koenig said the bike hit him twice in the leg as he strapped it on, and dropped it completely, an accident which resulted in the removal of the rear reflector.

Although it may seem a cumbersome

process for many, some claim once it’s been done multiple times, it gets significantly easier.

“I have no problem getting it on and off the bus in little time,” local bike enthusiast Gary Sanbourne said. “There is a huge barrier to initially figuring it out, but honestly, once I got it down, it’s been smooth sailing.”

In addition, Sanbourne, clad in cargo pants, a plaid Chaps button-up and Merrells, said he thinks Madison Metro does a great job of facilitating green public transportation.

“I’m so happy that Metro encourages the bike-and-bus combo. If you know how to get your bike on there, which, believe me, isn’t easy that first time, you can go anywhere in Madison.”

Koenig said he has since given up on the bike mount on the metro and has decided to choose one method over the other. After his bike fell off mid-bus ride and got run over on his second attempt to bike and bus last week, he said he will “stick to walking for now, until I can get my bike fixed.”
