Proudly presents FOOTNOTES SIGNATURE TEAM SHOWCASE

Season 40 WOW!!! What a year! 40 years down, and we can hardly believe how quickly the time flew. We’d like to extend a HUGE thank you to everyone for joining us in dance and in celebration of our 40th anniversary this season We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work with thousands of dancers of all ages and have even enjoyed watching alumni return, allowing us to dance with their own children, and grandchildren, too. We are a big family, here at Backstage, and are so grateful for this wonderful community The support and strength that’s come from having such deep, meaningful relationships with our students and families is nothing short of amazing! We teach dance with the collective goal of not only creating great dancers, but more importantly, raising great humans from the lessons and experiences derived from this special art form

As part of this momentous year, it’s also time for us to send off another round of graduating seniors into the great-big-adult world

Emily and Chisako, have been with us since they were just wee little 5 and 6 year olds, so it feels like we ’ re saying goodbye to our own kids These dancers have made a strong impact on us as dance educators, contributed positively to the overall culture here at BDS, and they’ve been ideal role models, inspiring many of our dancers throughout the years. They are leaders within not just the studio, but to so many others, as both ladies manage their own home lives and travel around the country assisting world-renowned teachers from the dance industry. When younger dancers see them at the studio, they always excitedly yell their names and run up to hug them These two dance and perform with a special kind of fearlessness, that makes you involuntarily move and sway in your seat as you ’ re watching them pour their hearts out onto the dance floor, captivated by their storytelling. They let inhibitions go to put their all into their performance and in doing so, help set the bar to give others the confidence to do the same. We are beyond proud of the women they’ve become and look forward to watching them live out their bright futures.

FOOTNOTES 2024 SEASON 40

EMILY is one of the most dedicated and driven people we ’ ve worked with She manages to juggle an unusually rigorous school schedule with college-level classes, an internship, dancing 12+ hours a week, Robotics club and what seems like 5 other kinds of clubs, traveling and competing most weekends, and then also making time for near-daily car and studio parking lot shenanigans with her sister and friends Emily is strong and courageous in her approach to both dance and life She’s a powerhouse of a dancer, whose self-confidence allows her to go for pretty much anything we throw at her without fear of judgment or of looking scary before looking good She’s dynamic and expressive on stage, with a calm, nonchalant kind of presence and dry sense of humor off stage Emily sets lofty goals for herself, with careful, intentional planning behind how to achieve those goals We think she’s bonkers, but in the best way possible, for the high expectations she holds herself to and for the number of activities she’s always committed herself to If not actively in dance class, you will find her hunkered down over her computer working on homework every free moment she has… or possibly lying on a mat in room 3 or a box in room 5 with her hoodie over her head, on the verge of falling asleep All kidding aside, with whatever she decides to do in the future, Emily will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with She and her family have been with us since 2012 and have contributed over the years to making our Signature Team what it is today by always encouraging the community aspect, volunteering to help plan and work events, and always ensuring that everyone is informed and cared for We’ve been very lucky to have the whole Elien family so involved over the years We will miss Emily and all that she brings to this team, and the studio and, of course, wish her all the best as she transitions into this next phase of her life.

The team will have some BIG shoes to fill next year without you, Em Thanks for being you!

CHISAKO’S journey dancing with us has been one of the most gratifying and transformative experiences we ’ ve seen from a student. When Chisako started with us way back in 2012, she was very quiet, shy, and soft-spoken, not one to want to be in the limelight or have any attention on her in class At one-point, years ago, she found herself in a precarious situation – she wasn’t sure she wanted to keep dancing, but with a little encouragement from us and her mom (thank you, Yuko!!), she decided to give it another shot From there, her story made a complete 180 and the rest is history Ever since that point, Chisako has evolved as a dancer, and person, in a way we don’t often see We’ve since had the privilege of watching her develop into the strong, confident, uninhibited dancer, and leader that she is now, who enthusiastically wants to choreograph and teach whenever possible We’ve gotten to watch her find her own voice, literally and figuratively, and discover a new kind of joy and passion in her own dancing that she may never have found otherwise That voice she found is now one of the rowdiest, loudest, goofiest, most influential voices that our team has, and we are so grateful for that As a dancer, Chisako has become adept at keeping the audience’s attention with her unmistakable feeling and intensity behind her movements She has been a mentor and go-to person to many of our students, being easily approachable with her bubbly, silly personality and her natural knack for building up others What a gift it’s been to see her embrace her talents, continually stepping out of her comfort zone, to become this incredibly solid, resilient dancer and human We are so proud of her growth, for who she’s become, and for trusting us years ago when we said she was an asset to this team and had so much potential to be an incredible dancer Not to gloat, but we love when we ’ re right We can’t wait to see Chisako’s journey continue, and maybe even get to teach alongside her as peers in the future

Chis, you will forever be our favorite kind of taco

EMILY ELIEN –

ELITE │ AGE 17 │ 12TH GRADE AT BIG PICTURE HIGH SCHOOL

– My favorite thing about myself is my ability to work hard towards goals in many facets of my life – I’m scared of Cockroaches I’ve never seen one and I never want to – I wish I knew how to juggle, that would be such a cool party trick. – My dad gave me the best piece of advice I’ve ever gotten He told me that a good leader is someone who can support their organizations to survive them once they leave, it’s not easy but something I have been trying to do as I head out the senior door!

This studio has been the biggest part of my life for the past 12 years, I have appreciated every person who has contributed to my experience here and would like to take some time to properly appreciate you all!!

Mom: Thank you for being there through all of my dance adventures, from gluing my lashes on and doing my hair when I was little, to having to leave the room before my solos because of your own nerves today (she still glues my lashes sometimes today too haha) Through all the hotel rooms and post comp tea sessions – thank you mama <3

Dad: You are the swaggiest dancer, and I know and really do know how the bring the house down!! I’m not sure if they’ll have you walk the red carpet, sing a solo, play the piano, or some other wild thing this year in the dads dance but I’ll sure be excited and proud to see you shine Also, even though I start laughing on stage whenever I see you in the audience, it is always great to see (and hear…) you at comps and performances!

Zoe: Hey sis, I am running out of words and have wayyyy too much to say so I’ll give it to you in a card But thank you for slaying the day away with duo at all of these comps this year!

Chis: A few years ago, you said something in an Insta caption that has stuck with me ever since – “Emily is my second home” And I guess it’s about time for me to say back that you are my second home too, miss taco I literally wouldn’t want anyone else to share my senior year at BDS with and looking back I think that it is fair to say we really did take on the world Leaving you is going to be one of the hardest things that I do but trust I will be there for every show when you’re on tour <3

ELITE!!!: Thank you all for being the sweetest group of people I have ever had the privilege of being on a team with I will miss you all dearly and I am excited to see you grow into the incredible leaders you are!!

Olivia: Now that you have been officially voted as an Elite, I hope you had a great time with our wacky team and know that we all adore you so so much You are an amazing dancer and have been so fun to have in class I know this world has a lot to offer for you and I am so excited to watch as you go and take it all!

My royal family: Whether you were in my kingdom this year or last, it has been an honor to be your queen, keep dreaming and keep working hard, I am proud of you all and hope you carry your royalty with pride!

Marty: I have taken from a whole lot of tap teachers and I gotta say, we really do have the best one right at BDS It has been an absolute honor to perform your incredible choreography over the years, and listening to our music without the tap over it, I always marvel at how your and Bailey’s brains can come up with it all Your studio has been so important in my life and I am excited to see how it grows when I come back to visit!

Bailey: Thank you for being not just a teacher, but a mentor and a guide throughout my senior year Having someone like you to go to for advice, a ranting sesh, or a new idea for my solo has been invaluable and I deeply appreciate every late night that you choose to spend with Chis and I

Rhonda: I’m not sure if I have ever told you this but you feel like the studio mom and have been there both to build me as a dancer and a person throughout these years as such Thank you so much for taking the time to care about me both in and outside of the studio and reminding me where my emotions for pieces come from – even when that leads me to cry on stage I’ll miss you so so much and am excited to eat more of your scrumptious Rice Krispies when I visit!

Leta: I have taken more ballet classes from you than I have (and probably will) from any other person in my life and have appreciated your constant investment in my growth as a dancer, and ability to challenge me at every part of my life. I’m going to hunt on Amazon for those knee braces too ;)

Jenae: First off, I would like to apologize for the condition of my shoulders, they are a mess, and I really appreciate your willingness to work on them despite their stubbornness But, as far as ballet goes, thank you so much for making your class a welcoming and caring space for us all to work hard and push ourselves, while knowing that if I don’t feel great – Ms. Jenae will have my back!

Kelly: I honesty attribute so much of my stylistic growth as a dancer to those privates we had during COVID and the solos you have choreographed for me since Thank you for always pushing me (even when I may be grumpy) and bringing me up to be the most mature and unique dancer I can be

Tani: Though I have missed your presence much in the studio this year, I would like to thank you for always being a steady and calm energy amidst the chaos of competition season I think that you win as teacher with the strangest pictures in my camera role, and I wish you and CC the best in all your future travels!

CHISAKO MAEDA

ELITE │ AGE 17 │ 12TH GRADE AT SAMMAMISH HIGH SCHOOL

– Favorite thing about myself: My outgoing personality – Something that scares me: Public speaking – Something I wish I knew how to do: I wish I knew sign language – The best advice I’ve ever gotten is from Alyssa, and she told me to dance for myself and to take in every moment.

Wow It feels unreal that I am writing my senior bio Throughout my years on the team, I have always read the senior bios wondering what I would write in mine, but now I am here writing my last Footnotes bio I have been at Backstage since I was 4, and it has been the most life changing experience of my life I have always been shy and quiet and would always dance in the back corner of the room, but being a part of such an amazing team created an environment that allowed me to hatch out of my shell This amazing studio has shaped who I am today and allowed me to blossom as a dancer and as a person.

To my Elite team, you guys have become my family I will never forget the memories we have made together You guys have made my time at this studio unforgettable Sydney, you were there for my first jazz dance, my first contemporary dance, my first tap dance, you were there for it all Thank you for bringing such a bright light to my life and I can’t wait to see you flourish as you continue your years at the studio Wari, I can’t believe I have only known you for a few years I will forever cherish all the laughs and memories we have shared and look back to them when I am missing a little Wari in my life Thank you for bringing a smile to my face with your goofy energy and your Celsius outburst. Elise, I will forever be in awe of your maturity and your ability to make the cutest cards Watching you grow into becoming such an amazing leader to the Elite team is something I will never forget, and I can’t wait to see where these next years take you. Edie, my jaw will always drop when I watch you dance You have become an inspiration to me and everyone around you I will forever admire your work ethic and your kind soul You bring so much joy to the dance studio with your humble and positive energy You are truly amazing Pri, you never fail to make me laugh with your goofy jokes and Chad faces Something I love about you is how you never give up and you always see the good in people You are such an amazing role model for everyone around you Olivia, you probably don’t know this, but you bring me SO much joy You are THE most charismatic person I have ever met Your little goofy moments in class bring me the most joy

To the teachers, my time on the backstage competition team would not have been the same without these amazing teachers Marty, you have the ability to come up with the most unexpected and most creative ideas for tap. From rain dances, to painting classes with bob ross, the tap dances at this studio will be the most iconic Rhonda, going on rides with you and Marty at Disney is probably the highlight of nationals Thank you for pushing me in class with your crazy hard exercises and for inspiring me to become really buff like you Kelly, I don’t think an easy Kelly combo exists You are always pushing us out of our comfort zone, and I will forever appreciate that You have helped me find my own style of dance Tani, you are like the glue that holds everything together Whenever I see you at the studio it’s like a breath of fresh air You always remind me that I am enough, and you have always reminded me to be myself You are the yogi queen Jenae, if Olaf was a person, it would be you because of your funny and caring heart. I have never been confident in ballet, but because of you I believe in myself more than I ever have Leta, although I don’t have you this year, you have taught me so much You are the sweetest person ever and I am so grateful to have had you as my ballet teacher. Alyssa, you have the kindest heart, and probably the most positive human being to ever exist on this planet You have impacted my entire perspective of dance from just one conversation The advice you gave me is something that I will always remember and take with me with every performance I do Maddie, you are the coolest person I have ever encountered The outfits, the hair, the everything is just amazing I wear the bracelet you gave me every day because I feel like whenever I do hip–hop with it on, I channel my inner Maddie swag Bailey, I wouldn’t be where I am today without you You have been such an amazing teacher to me and to everyone else Because of you I am here writing my footnotes senior bio, and because of you I have the confidence to put myself out into the college dance world. Thank you for being the rock of the studio.

To Emily, my amazing duo partner, and my fellow senior. I don’t know where I would be without you. We have been through so much and I wouldn’t want to have done it with anyone else I am so lucky that I get to share my senior year with my best friend We started together, and we will take our final bows together, and I wouldn’t want it any other way

To my mom/fam, thank you for making my dreams come true You have given me something more than money can buy, your endless amount of support and love Thank you for being my best friend throughout my journey here at Backstage Without you, my dreams would never have become reality Thank you for always being there from my highs to my lows I wouldn’t have made it without you.

To the rest of the team, every single one of you is truly amazing, and every single one of you has impacted my journey here at Backstage This team, this studio, the support, and love, has given me something to live for
