WE LOVE OUR DANCE COMMUNITY BY MARTY ROBERTS, STUDIO OWNER During the month of February, when we have the opportunity to celebrate Valentine's Day, we definitely feel the love of our dance community! Our many different community members spread the love in a multitude of ways--our parents, who take the time to bring their child to dance classes weekly (some daily!), our teachers, who are committed to each child's skill development AND socialemotional growth, and our dancers, who come to class to work hard and share our love of dance! Thank you for spreading love and positivity within our BDS community this and every month!

GAIA SHAVINER Gaia is enrolled in Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Ballet classes at Backstage. She was nominated by Miss Grace, her Hip Hop 2 teacher, who says that Gaia comes to class eager to learn, pays attention throughout class and is caring toward her classmates.

EMERY LAN Emery is enrolled in Creative Movement and was nominated by Miss Sofia, who says Emery is an amazing listener, is always on task, and stays very focused during class.

ANNELISE GUERRERO Annelise is a member of our Signature Competition Team! She was nominated by her Tap Tech 206 teachers, Marty and Bailey, who say that Annelise is always on time to class and comes with a great attitude! She can always be found practicing skills to better her tap technique!

Teacher Spotlight JENAE! Jenae joined the Backstage team last year as one of our awesome ballet teachers! Jenae began her ballet training at Tacoma City Ballet and continued her training for almost 30 years at Walnut Hill in Boston, Oregon Ballet Theater, Evergreen City Ballet and Lines Ballet in San Francisco. She began her professional experience in 2005, which includes dancing and teaching for Ballet Austin in Texas, Evergreen City Ballet, Tulsa Ballet in Oklahoma, Sahara Hotel and Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas, Tacoma City Ballet and most recently, Cascade Dance Academy in Snoqualmie. We are thrilled to have Miss Jenae bring her teaching and professional experiences to the Backstage community!

Mid-Winter Break Camp!
We are excited to offer an opportunity for dancers to join us during mid-winter break for a BEACH PARTY! Our mid-winter break camp, for dancers ages 5 to 8, will be filled with beach-themed songs, dancing, crafts and more! We hope your dancer will join us to create a little SUNSHINE at BACKSTAGE BEACH! We are finalizing our summer class schedule as this newsletter goes to print! Stay tuned for summer updates and summer class and camp registration details within the next two weeks! We plan to offer six weeks of classes as well as our 2-in-1 Dance/Gymnastics camps with Gym East and our BDS Performing Arts Camps!

OUR CHARACTER FOCUS FOR FEBRUARY IS...
TENACITY Look for a culture card coming home with your dancer in February! We hope everyone will earn a card for working on their TENACITY this month! Tenacity is defined as "persistent determination." A person with a tenacious character will achieve a goal they set despite any difficulties encountered while achieving that goal.
The benefits of developing tenacity include: You will not let obstacles stop you from getting what you want. You will increase your desire to achieve things important to you. You will not quit easily. You will develop greater self-confidence. You will have a positive attitude in tough situations.

FOOTNOTES 2023 Are you interested in our competitive program or just want to see some GREAT dancing? Support our Signature Team on March 5th at Renton High School's IKEA Performing Arts Center for Footnotes, the annual showcase featuring all our competition team dances. Our Signature Team dancers range in age from 7 to 18. More information available soon on the Backstage website. Showtime is 1:00pm, tickets are $25 and will go on sale February 13 at 11:00am. PAGE 9
STARS TEAM Updates
Our STARS teams have been hard at work for months, learning choreography in their hip hop, tap, jazz and contemporary classes that they will perform at their first competition in March. STARS students, who range in age from 5 to 14, enroll in a minimum of four required classes per week and participate in two competitions per year. More details about our STARS program will be shared in the coming months!
