re you an aspiring golfer A who doesn’t know where to start, or an intermediate golfer looking to improve your game?

This article is written for golfers of all skill levels who want to know what techniques they can try to improve their shots and lower their scores. Read on to find out how.

In order to be good at golf, one of the basic things that you need to take care of is your grip. It is good to know how the ball will act in response to your grip. The tighter you hold the golf club, the more likely it is that the ball will go to the right. The looser the grip, the more likely that the ball will go to the left.

Add power to your swing by using your body, not your arms. Lean in to power your shot. Turn with the ball on the downswing. This lets you use the power of all of the muscles in your body to get a better shot, instead of being limited to just your arm muscles.

Another helpful tip is to be sure that you are a positive role model on the course when it comes to sportsmanship. This will say a lot about your character and help to build up the relationship with whoever you are playing with. Never let competitiveness get in the way of friendship.

A helpful tip when it comes to golf is to make sure that you follow through with each shot that requires a full hit. This is helpful because you want to make the most out of your swing and stopping short may cause you to not hit the ball as far as intended.

If you want to get rid of a hook the first thing you should do is check your grip. If your grip is too strong, your right hand is rotated too far over your left hand, you should practice moving your hand to a more neutral position. This will open your club face at contact and should prevent the hook.

Additionally, always be sure to try to find the reason why things go wrong if you have a bad day or bad shot. It is common to blame outside factors for your shortcomings, but you will not become a better golfer unless you can narrow down how to improve.

How To Choose Between Top Golfing Accessories

hen you are faced with may different golfing accessories, it can be easy to lose sight of your goals and simply become overwhelmed by all of the different options. If you want to spend your money well and get golf accessories that will come in handy, you should follow some guidelines that I will lay out for you here.

It will help you to step back and look objectively at what your ultimate goal is. Hopefully, as a result of your careful research you will save some money and end up making the best choice when it comes to choosing the accessories that are best for you.

First you need to assess how useful the item can be. Will it actually make your game of golf more enjoyable, or is it more of a novelty that will soon wear off? If you aren’t buying an item for its utility, you will have to seriously think about why else you could want it. Are you hoping to impress your golfing buddies, or do you just feel the obsessive need to spend money on golf and its many accessories? Items like golf club bags will always be useful since they help to keep your other big investments save and organized for you. However, the same can’t be said for other golf accessories. Some are just a waste of money that reel you in because of how neat they are.

One day when you go to the golf course, imagine that you have the accessory with you. Every time you would use it throughout the day, make a mark on a piece of paper. You may be surprised to find that there are absolutely no marks at the end of the day.

However, if there are a few marks and you honestly believe that you would be better off with the accessory, then you should start comparing brands and features. Price is an important factor to consider. Personally, it helps me make a choice when I can find the cheapest option for the particular accessory I’m looking at.

If you think there is a way that you could get cheaper golf accessories, then you should certainly take advantage of this.

You might be able to find the same exact accessory for half as much. If you have golfing buddies who tend to go through accessories at a high turnover rate, you should ask them if they have anything that they would be willing to part with for a fair price. You might luck out and get it for free. Even if you just get it for a discounted rate, it is still better than paying full price.

Golf accessories can put a huge hole in your wallet if you re not careful, so it s good to take advantage of these opportunities when they arise.

Instead of just going for the most expensive accessory whenever you see something that strikes your interest, you should take a more cool and calculated approach to the purchase. Do everything that I have mentioned so far in order to make sure that you really want and need the item, and then do what you can to get the best deal possible on the golf accessory. You will save plenty of money in the long run for it to be worth the effort.

I

t’s true. You will most likely never see a car carrier on a Hearse. We’ve all heard the old saying “You can’t take it with you.” Nonetheless, everyone tends to collect something. And there’s certainly no shortage of stuff with the average person ending up with a large amount of personal items over the course of a lifetime. So much so that charity centers are starting to become more picky, declining to pickup a growing list of items and making it harder for people to figure out what to do with all this stuff when the time comes.

Meanwhile, every single day someone is faced with the daunting task of having to liquidate the contents of a house. It’s usually as a result of one of the four ‘D’s : a death, downsize, default, or divorce. So what do they do? How do they empty the house and get the most money possible for the salable items?

The answer is to always call a professional estate sale liquidator. Before you start to throw things away, line up donations, or bring jewelry to the cash for gold place, call a professional. Your Golf Basic Training Routine

A

proper training program is the most important part of your golf training routine. When training, most folks forget to work on shots close to the green. Extra hours hitting a picturesque drive can be fun, but fixing the kinks in your shots in the sub 100yard range will cut strokes from you card faster.

For a training regiment to be effective, you must keep a regular routine. Golf training time should be shared equally between driving and approaches. An hour pounding drives should at least equal an hour on the putting green.

Do not neglect approach shots either, or chip shots and or shots out of the sand. A long, arrow straight drive is a thing of beauty to watch, but an accurate chip shot will save two-puts and win matches. When training, it is best to simulate real world conditions. Sure, you could rake the sand perfectly smooth for each and every practice shot and place ball gently on top, but that will never happen on the course. Toss the ball straight up in the air to simulate the dreaded fried egg flop. Set your practice shots up right against the wall of the sand trap practice high angle outs, or the smart shot off to the side.

Train at rescuing your game from the deep salad. Not making it to the driving range is not a reason to skip training.

If you spent an hour at the driving range this morning, then you owe yourself an hour of short game practice. A bucket of balls is the only equipment you need to practice The Back Nine of CHERRY HILL ♌ advertising to move your business forward ♌ 16

chipping from the unattended edges at the park.

Incorporating your putter into your training routine will prove the most important thing you can do. More matches are decided on the green than any other part of the course.

Practice the long shots, the short taps and even a few from the fringe while on the putting green.

Do not forget that you can practice at home too. You can chip from the garden and weed at the same time! Refrain from mowing the back yard another week and practice some light chip shots. Find a neighbor and take turns hitting practice balls into each other yard to work on blind chip shots.

Regular practice is the most important element in your training routine. You will be better off with an hour, three times a day than four hours on a Sunday. Most important, enjoy your time.

Golf is no fun if becomes work.

unglasses are, for most, part of the every day. You wake up, you leave the house and on go the sunglasses. They protect our eyes and keep us from seeing spots when we get caught in the glare of a rear window. But a good pair of shades can be extremely useful when playing golf,too. Here are a few different things to consider when buying a pair of sunglasses, both for on and off the greens.

Comfort Comfort is an extremely important factor. If your sunglasses slide down your nose or maybe rest awkwardly against your ears, you can find yourself distracted. Or unable to keep them on your face. When buying a good pair of sunglasses, make sure that you’ve tried them on and that they feel ‘matched’ to your facial structure. It doesn’t do to just let them sit on your face. Move your head around. Look up and down and side to side. If you feel any slippage at all, it could tell you that when you start sweating, you could find your sunglasses being more annoying that useful.

Tint and Polarization For golf, you want to be able to measure distances by eye. Dark or ‘smoke’ tint on your sunglasses might not be great. A nice dark amber or brown is probably your best bet. Smoked lenses tend to wash things out a bit and can make everything look like the same color. You may find yourself lifting your glasses up to gauge distances better. A brown lens won’t wash things out nearly as much. No matter the lens color, though, getting yourself a pair of polarized lenses is important. Polarization reduces glare and cuts the strain on your eyes if you’re looking in the direction of the sun.

Weight This might be surprising for many. A pair of sunglasses is always light, right? Wrong. Some pairs have a real weight feel to them. This can cause discomfort around your ears and on the bridge of your nose, especially if there are uncomfortable nose pads on the glasses. lighter the better. Many high end manufacturers are now producing sunglasses made of plastic that are just as tough as metal and weight half as much.

UV Protection Ultra-Violet rays can really cause damage to your peepers. To avoid this find sunglasses that have a decent UV protection number on them. The more you’re outside, the higher your UV protection should be. Don’t skimp on this. UV damage accumulates over time and can cause problems down the road. If you’re playing golf often, do yourself a favor and get something with strong UV protection.

Price Pricing is also something you ought to consider when making a purchase. I don’t mind spending $100.00 on a pair of sunglasses. These are things I use daily and they should be worth it. It’s just an extra benefit when I can use it on the golf course or at the driving range. Of course, spending $100.00 on a pair of shades isn’t for everyone. As long as you can find the specifications you need, price doesn’t matter, even if they’re something you find at a convenience store on the way to play.

o you’ve been avoiding yourself in the mirror lately, and you want to get started on some kind of exercise program.

The problem is you’re not sure what. You could join a gym membership, and crowd in there like everybody else after work, and trudge away on the treadmill. That would definitely give you the exercise that you need. Recently, however, more and more people are starting to realize that by participating in competitive sports, you get incredible benefits far and above what you would get from joining a gym. If you’d like to get involved in sports but aren’t sure how, then this article is for you.

If you are absolutely clueless on how to start, don’t worry.

Everybody starts off that way. One way to begin is to head down to your local library, and head on over to the sporting section. Pick up a few “how to” books on various sports, and thumb through them and see if they seem interesting. If you can imagine yourself playing that particular sport, and find it enjoyable, then it will likely be so when you play for real. Don’t limit yourself to only one, make sure to note all the different sports you think you’ll enjoy.

Another idea is to head on down to your local sporting goods store. Just wander around and look at what’s available as far as sports equipment. Pick up a few and try them out, and see how they feel. This can be a good way to do a ‘gut check’ to see if a particular sport is right for you. An advantage of going to a sporting goods store it that you can ask questions of whatever sport you may be interested in.

Another great source of inspiration is your local community college. These always have beginners course in many sports.

They are good for many reasons. One is that they are relatively cheap, and meet once a week or so. Another is that you’ll find many other people that are in the same boat as you, and are just starting out. You might even find plenty of people to play your new sport with, giving you all kinds of extra opportunities.

Another option you may have is to check with your company.

If you work for a fairly large company, there’s a good chance they’ll have sports organizations within the company for team sports like softball, volleyball and others. This can be a great way to get to know your coworkers as well. And if you participate through work, there’s a good chance that it can be subsidized in some way.

Naturally, these ideas are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to finding the right sport for you. Once you start exploring your options, you’ll realize you have more choices than you are aware of. And before you know it, you’ll be playing your favorite sport on a regular basis.

Tee Off With Disc Golf

at the Top of the Rockies

D

isc Golf, also known as Frisbee Golf, is a simple sport that almost anyone can enjoy. Disc Golf has taken off in popularity in the last few years, since it requires relatively inexpensive equipment and most everyone has experience throwing a Frisbee. Combine that with fact that most courses are free and have beautiful surroundings, and you have an affordable outdoor sport that can provide hours of entertainment for the whole family.

Courses can be found just about everywhere these days and generally consist of 9, 18 or 24 holes. The “holes” are actually baskets with hanging chains to slow & secure an incoming disc. On an average course these holes can be anywhere from 150 to 500 feet apart, and have water hazards to make things interesting. A bad throw could result in a lost disc unless you are prepared to do a little swimming.

Discs cost between $8-$20, so they are easy to replace, and come in three basic types. The driver is normally a harder disc that you can rocket off the tee. But be careful, because if you misfire, then you are in for a long walk. The putter is a softer disc made to grab the chains of the basket from a shorter distance. these two you have your midrange discs that can vary in weight and flight style.

Winter Park Resort has a great 18-hole course that is located at the top of Winter Park Mountain. At nearly 11,000 feet you have spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, and can enjoy a nice lunch on the wraparound deck of the Sunspot. Discs can be rented at the base of the mountain and you must ride the scenic chair lift to the top, unless you are up for a little hike.

hose of us who have been playing golf for any length of time understand that it is more than just a game. There’s no denying that golf instills certain physical attributes and that it’s good exercise but there’s more to it than that, and most golfers that I know would wholeheartedly agree. That extra component that

golf offers its players is a set of life skills that serve us daily — whether we know it or not.

This holds true for new golfers as well as they begin to learn the game and appreciate its overall value not just on the course but in life in general.

But golf isn’t like basketball or soccer or baseball when it comes to our younger

players. Kids who want to play but don’t have the resources to buy the needed equipment or mentors to teach them the game are pretty much left out. The truth is golf can be horribly expensive, even at the junior level.

So what can the average Joe do about this? That depends on how much you want to do. If you live a metro area, chances are there are mentoring programs already in place.

A call or visit to one might lead you into taking personal active action by becoming a mentor. If you don’t have the time or feel as if you don’t have the skills to teach others, perhaps you can do other things to help the program.

If you live in a rural area or an area that simply doesn’t have a golf mentor program at all, well, consider creating your own mentoring program. You don’t have to be a pro to teach a youngster the fundementals of the game. Schedule a chat with your course manager and discuss the idea with him or her and see if you can’t work something out.

If you’re not the mentoring type, consider donating to a program. Many golfers (at least the ones I know) have old clubs and bags sitting in their garages that they will never use again. Why let them gather dust and spider webs? Give them to a program of your choice and let someone else enjoy them. Even if you only have a few old clubs (meaning less than a full set, or even an old putter or driver)... donate it to them.

Frankly, I think it’s something of a shame that kids who can’t afford clubs or have no one to teach them this game are left out. It doesn’t have to be that way, and you could be the one to change that in your community. the back nine of CHERRY HILL ♦ backninepublishing.com ♦ 27

However, just like any other sport, the start of a match can set the tempo for your entire game. This is why learning how to hit a successful driver shot can benefit you tremendously.

A successful driver shot in golf can you set you up in better position for the rest of your shots on the current hole you are playing. An unsuccessful driver shot can lead to disaster in your golf game, causing you to have to take extra strokes, or causing you to play your ball on an unfavorable lie. These steps will hopefully allow the viewers to gain a hold on their driver shots, which will improve their entire game as a whole.

The first step to hit a successful driver shot is to ensure that you have the proper equipment tailored to your game. The modern day driver has various customized features that one can apply to their weapon of choice. You first must get your driver sized properly according to your height and arm length. This will make sure that you are not swinging a club that is too large or too small. Another feature that is customizable on a driver is the degree of the driver head.

Many divers allow you to change the angle of the head to provide either more of a draw to their shot, or more of a slice in some situations. The shaft of the driver also allows for some change, providing either a flex or stiff shaft type.

A stiff shaft does not bend during your shot, and is more consistent in many cases. A flex club provides a bit more torque while swinging the club, although is harder to control. No matter how you choose to create your driver,

you want to make sure it matches your style of play.

The second step to producing a successful drive is your setup to the ball. You must first use a tall tee to raise the ball. You usually want the ball height to be about ½ of an inch above your club when placed in front of it. Once you have finished placing the ball in the corresponding fashion, you must approach the ball and focus on your driver stance. Unlike many irons, the driver is almost always played on your front foot. In order to match the weight of the club, place your front foot even with the ball. Next, make sure you have a slight bend in your knees, allowing you to swing with more degree of motion on your swing.

Once you have set up to the ball correctly, you can now focus on the actual swing itself.

Yes it is true, everybody will obviously not have the same exact same swing, but there are key pointers in your swing that a successful driver swing possesses. The first component of a smooth driver swing is the player’s grip on the golf club.

It is important that the player holds the club in a relaxed manner, because if the club is held too tight, the player will roll their wrists over, causing the ball to hook. If a player is too loose with his grip, the club face will open up, causing the ball to slice instead. The next step to a correct driver swing is to remain calm and collected in your downswing.

Once you bring your club back to a comfortable height, you must fight your first instinct, and control your club on the way down.

Many beginner golfers feel that in order to crush the golf ball, you must swing as hard as you can. This is hardly the reality of the matter. Remaining calm and collected on your downswing allows your body to remain loose, instead of tensing up and losing control of the club. Remaining loose allows your muscles in your body to act as rubber bands and produces a whip like motion, creating the overall power in your shot. Although it might seem awkward not to swing as hard as you can, it will prevent you from losing your eye on the ball and much of the time, force your body to raise up and top the ball. the back nine of CHERRY HILL ♦ backninepublishing.com ♦ 29

nvision this scenario: you have just launched a E beautiful driver shot off the

tee and followed it up with an even better approach shot from the fairway. As a result, the ball is sitting 10 feet from the cup with a chance at birdie! You are probably feeling pretty good until you walk up to grab your putter and think to yourself “what on Earth do I do now?” You would be like many golfers who haven’t quite yet developed the skill of reading a putt.

In essence, you are attempting to envision the path your ball is going to take to hear that wonderful sound of the bottom of the cup. There are numerous factors that play into this potential success and we will review them here.

First things first. Determine an estimate of the distance your putt will need to travel. If the ball is a mile away from the hole and on the green, you need to adjust your strategy.

You cannot realistically go for the hole and expect to make it from 40 feet and out.

Instead, deploy the “lag” shot as it is called. This is a shot in which you do your best

to get it relatively close to the hole in order to give yourself a true chance of sinking the next putt. On your way to grabbing the flagstick out of the hole, attempt to eyeball the distance by pacing off the walk carefully.

There is a rule of thumb that for every foot of distance the club needs to be taken back 1 inch on the backswing (use that simply as a guide). Next, determine the bend or slope of the green.

Not every putt is going to travel on a straight path towards the hole and you must realize that and account for it. Putts with a lot of break should fall into the cup from the side of the hole, not the front like most straight traditional putts. This allows you to really play the break and give you a better chance to hole out the putt. If you can’t determine the slope of a green, know that if there is water involved that the green USUALLY falls towards that hazard. The slope and break of a putt are the two biggest components of any putt. For example, if a putt has a lot of break but is downhill, you will need to compensate for the break more. The reason for this is that a slower putt will experience the full force of the break as opposed to a faster hit uphill putt. One last thing to keep in

mind is how to address putting out of the fringe. The fringe often outlines the greens and contains a thicker cut. Therefore the ball will slow down when traveling through it, so please take that into account and add speed to your putt. These are just a few simple keys to abide by around the greens and following them will work wonders on your game.

Do not be deceived by how much I have stressed the importance of hitting the “long ball” and approach shots. While it is absolutely imperative you have this part of your game down to get on the greens, what you do when you’re on the dance floor is just as important. You can hit the prettiest drive and stick your approach shot close and be looking at a birdie opportunity! But then if you three or even worse four putt, no one will remember your first two great shots. Today we are going to learn the bare bones basics of a solid, working putting stroke. Everyone please take heed; even you “big hitters” out there.

The Stance/Setup Often overlooked, this is the point at which the success (or lack thereof) is determined. If you want to put more putts in the bottom of the cup then you need to be careful how you set up.

• Aim to have your eyes over the ball and place the ball up in your stance; off your left foot • Grip hands with palms opposite of each other (one palm facing the other) • Grip should be about 6 on a scale of 10; relaxed and loose grip is always better

The Stroke Ensure shoulders are aligned parallel to the target line and form a triangle with your arms and hands.

• Maintain triangle throughout stroke and limit use of lower body • Pretend your arms form a pendulum; backswing should be the same tempo as downswing • Do NOT hesitate at any point. Trust your stroke and good things will happen Unfortunately you cannot just walk up and hit the ball hoping for the best like you can in miniature golf. Greens actually have varying slopes, ridges, and other obstacles that mean you have to account for the speed and break of each putt. Before you make your putt, squat down and do your best to read the slope and speed and then pick a “line” to the hole. From there, align your ball along that target you pictured in your head and just trust it.

THE BOOMERANG PUTTING TECHNIQUE or BOOMTECH means learning how to roll a ball with perfect line and distance control. One can easily learn the technique within a month depending on the quality of the person’s golf education and how much he or she wants to learn.

For medium-slow it is 5’6’’. For slow play it is only 4’6’’.

Tips for Training Speed If the player wants to learn in a short time period then he or she should start on the very slow surface because the slower the surface, the longer the stroke.

How to Test Your Surface with the Putting Pro If you want to test your Putting Pro, then you need a perfectly

flat surface. If you do not have that, you can make your own.

To compensate for any break around the target, gently twist the Putting Pro’s wire leg, then put it back and test it using the rolling level feature. Place your Putting Pro down and position it on the curlier end of your putting mat. Next, hold the marble gently on the edge of the target, at 4 o’clock. Then let it roll until it comes to a stop. If it stops at precisely 6 o’clock, you know your Putting Pro is on a flat surface. If the ball comes to rest in any other position, give the legs another little tweak, then test again.

When your Putting Pro is set up correctly (level around the target), any putt that curves off line at the end is attributable to the stroke itself and nothing else. That’s why doing the work to get set up correctly before you start ensures the highest quality feedback, and the fastest possible improvement. When satisfied that your Putting Pro is set up level, it’s time to test the full length of your putt.

To do this, carefully release your marble from its resting position, allowing it to roll down the ramp under its own steam. Note where your marble rolls. If it reaches the end of the mat without falling off either side, the entire putt is level enough to use. However if it falls off before reaching the end of your mat, then your putt has a break. Avoid setting up your Putting Pro at the end of a breaking putt, but if you have no choice use business cards placed at strategic intervals under the low edge of your mat to even it up.

I’ve done it, occasionally, when there was nowhere suitable, and I needed to give a demo.

Later in the day, she pulled out a 5 wood and proceeded to hit one of the sweetest shots possible, landing on a perfectly flat lie (not easy on this course) leaving an exact 150 yards to the middle of the green.

Very nice indeed! As the game progressed it became obvious to us all that this 5 wood was quickly becoming a real favorite. She really bonded with this club.

By the time we finished the first nine she disappeared into the pro shop and had ordered a 5 wood and a 3 in this particular make.

Now here is a good golfer with a nice positive attitude who knows immediately what she wants! I like her style.

I was immediately reminded of the fact that an almost identical thing had happened to me a few months earlier, although sadly I did not take such immediate action. I was playing in the Carolinas and had not taken my clubs and hence borrowed a set, which I immediately bonded with; I have to say that this does not usually happen for me.

Upon returning home I just could not hit my own driver and woods as sweetly as I had those other clubs.

I kept looking down at the club as it sat facing the ball and it simply didn’t look good to me; it didn’t look “right”. I knew in my head that it was in my own mind, if you see what I mean. But the fact remains that if your club does not look right to you, your golf confidence doesn’t feel right either! And any golfer knows that confidence is KING. Without confidence that ball zips off cross country as it takes on a mind of its own and visits trees, bunkers, lakes and goodness only

knows what else. Those golf balls do what they are told and if you do not apply a firm and focused mind set they will undoubtedly reflect this omission.

I am a self confessed golf addict as are the gals I was playing with.

A great conversation ensued about the look of a club and how it affected each of us. We progressed to discussing swings and swing thoughts and swing styles. We all agreed that everyone has to find their own perfect swing. There is no perfect swing for all and everyone.

Between the three of us, one has a baseball swing with a start and a finish added later, one has a “too-wide” stance and “too-flat” swing plane (me), and the other has what one would probably say is the more accepted norm. But they all work...for the person who uses them. They wouldn’t necessarily work for someone else, but that doesn’t matter; so long as your swing works for you, that’s all that is important.

And your swing will work for you when you have golf confidence. In golf, confidence is KING.

ports Psychology is nothing new. Major athletes have used it for years as a way to get over the innate fears of the losses they have experienced.

Being able to confront and push past ones fears is a way to perform at or near the pinnacle of your ability.

When you’re feeling your best mentally, you just play better. The same applies for the game of golf.

Tournament and competitive players are always under pressure to perform at their best and this pressure can really collapse when the inevitable mistake comes and bites them. Everyone has seen how pressure, both on and off the course, has affected great players. Anything from a bad night’s sleep to a breakfast that didn’t agree with you can somehow manage to increase that pressure. All it takes it one little misstep and suddenly you’re mired way back in the field and suddenly every time you swing, you think ‘if I miss this shot I’m done.’

Many players have taken to going to a sports psychologist at some point in their career and it has completely revitalized them. That pressure is no longer a curse, but just part of how the game is played. The game of golf is an inherently mental game. It’s all about focus. A sports psychologist can easily help

you narrow that focus and not think about the things around you that could effect your game. Once you set foot on the course, you’re able to maintain your composure.

But there’s also no real need to go see a psychology professional. There are hundreds of resources on the internet just waiting for you to access them. You can also find plenty of sports psychology books written by some of the leading professionals in the field.

The greatest thing about golf is that is really is designed as a way to relax. Perhaps that is really the most important thing to remember when you’re playing for fun. On the fairway, the pressures of your day are really off and the club is your psychologist.

o one expects to go out on the golf course and be perfect every time. Perfection can never really be attained, even by the greatest players of our day. At least not in the play itself. No one really says that it’s important to be totally fashionable on the golf course.

Comfort really should be first and foremost considering that we’re playing in the sun and in the heat.

Despite that, you can still look good. Spending the extra money on a moisture-wicking polo shirt and comfortable, light weight pants that still have some semblance of style is priceless, especially when playing at a club with a strict dress code. Comfort should still be a priority.

Many major sports brands, such as Nike and Adidas, make comfortable and subtle clothing that can work just as well while The Back Nine of CHERRY HILL ♦ advertising to move your business forward ♦ 40

playing golf as they do in an air conditioned conference room. The thin, cool material absorbs and disperses sweat. When people think of moisture wicking clothing, they tend to think of the skin tight undergarments that football players wear in the locker room. Yes, the material is quite similar, but clearly not skin tight. It looks exactly like what you would buy specifically to dress business casual.

Even pants have become more comfortable and made to pull away heat and moisture to keep you dry and comfortable. It’s also not uncommon to see UV protection as well as adding the convenience of tee holders. Like the moisture wicking shirts, the material tends to be light, but durable.

Something that can be absolutely vital to ones comfort when playing in the hot sun.

Who says looking good and being fashionable have to be mutually exclusive?

f there were sticks and objects that could be hurtled along, then there was ‘golf.’ No one knows for certain who started golf. But everybody knows who plays it now - everyone does.

The origin of the name ‘golf’ is believed to be the Dutch word of ‘colf,’ which means ‘club.’ In the medieval ages, golf was also known as “spel metten colve,’ which literally meant ‘game with clubs.’

Nearly every area around the world has some claim to the origination of golf. Scotland, of course, has its claim. But so do China, Rome, England, France, Holland, Belgium, even Laos.

Every country has a game consisting of sticks and balls, and every country is correct in its assumption that it invented the game. But there is no one country where ‘golf’ actually began.

Still, Scotland is widely considered to be birthplace of golf. And it began haphazardly, a way of hitting a pebble or other roundish object into a hole by means of a stick or club.

Edinburgh, Scotland, claimed the first golfing society. The Gentlemen Golfers - later known as the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and today in residence at Muirfield - claim their club was already under way in 1744.

The first inter-Scotland club matches were played in 1857. The world would wait until 1860 for the first British Open to be played.

The British Open was being played 35 years before the U.S. Open. It has been called “The World Open.” Players from around the globe participate, as they have for a century or more. the last decade. But the British Open has been accepting a cast from around the world since the turn of the century.

It is not known for certain when golf came to America - only that when it got a toehold in the 20th century, America became the world leader in great players. By 1900, the explosion of the game in America was complete. Proof was that, at the turn of the century, there were more golf clubs in the United States than there were in Britain.

Tiger Woods came upon the scene in 1996. He won eight times in 1999, nine times in 2000, and won the four major championships in succession in 2000-2001, starting with the U.S. Open in 2000.

Should his career be as successful in his 30s and 40s as it has been in his 20s, he will assume the mantle of “best player ever.”

Women have played a very large part in the history of golf, even before the last half of the 20th century when they finally achieved equality with men. Records of ladies playing golf exist all the way back to the time of Mary Queen of Scots.
