MS. RAFIAT O. YARROW MISS BLACK EIU 2024

MBEIU Queen’s Farewell To begin I will like to take a moment to recognize those who have passed on, and thank them for the long-lasting impressions, they have left in our hearts. Dearest Gentle Readers, As Miss Black EIU 2024, I am truly grateful for my journey as queen and the moments shared with my fellow Black student community. Serving as Miss Black EIU was a privilege. Preserving a 51-year-old tradition, that I was blessed to be a part of, I will forever hold it dear to my heart. Thank you to my fellow Queens before me for being the blueprint and thank you to the Diamonds of the Season for continuing the legacy left for them. As my reign comes to an end, to my successor, Miss Black EIU 2025, congratulations and welcome to our legacy. As you step into this position you might not fully understand your purpose, but you will. You are the light of the EIU Black community. You light up every room with your smile and embrace. The crown you wear today, is the crown your peers are looking up to. You are now a role model to those that you have touched tonight and share your experiences. You represent the Black women that are not yet able to spread their wings or use their voice. As you go through your reign remember you are still just a person. In this role Perfection is not the goal, constant growth over time is. When you desire the idea of perfection remember the words of Miss Gwendolyn Brooks - “Do not desire to fit in. Desire to oblige yourself to lead” Take this opportunity to lead yourself and our community down a brighter path in this world that is getting too dark. I am certain with your strength, poise, determination, and the assistance of our community, Miss Black EIU 2025, you will continue this beautiful legacy gracefully. 7

Arnezia, Words can’t express how incredibly PROUD I am of you. I’ve seen you carry a lot of responsibilities this semester and still show your determination and dedication to each individual thing. You’ve worked so hard to get to where you are today. SO you have every reason to be proud of yourself as well. Even when you have some tough days you still encourage and love everyone around you. You can light up a room with your smile and your motivating words. You are truly heaven sent. I’ve never met someone so loving, outgoing, and ambitious as you! You are always determined to make a name for yourself, do something great, and try something new even if it means stepping out your comfort zone. You have so many roles, you’re like superwoman… Student, daughter, pageant contestant #5, sister, aunt, cadet, e board member… Too many to name. You are AMAZING at all you do. Alaina, I'm so blown away at how well you have evolved. I love seeing you master and conquer your challenges. I know you are working hard when no one sees, and I know you are constantly reaching for the stars. And for that, I am in prayer for you and all of the things you put your hands to. So Niece, continue to reach, strive, and push forward because with each step, you gain more ground. One day, I know that we will look back and see how all of this sacrifice connects with your future success. So keep on beautiful and remember that struggle produces strength. I love you for life!
