International Women's Day The International Women's Day has been observed since the early 1900's - a time of great turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

In 1908, women's oppression and inequality were spurring, women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Around that time, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and voting rights.

In 1910, a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named Clara Zetkin tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women's Day - to press for their demands. The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, working women's clubs - and including the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament - greeted Zetkin's suggestion with unanimous approval and thus International Women's Day was born.

Following the decision agreed at Copenhagen in Denmark in 1911, International Women's Day was honoured the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

What colors symbolize International Women's Day? Purple, green and white are the colors of International Women's Day. Purple signifies justice and dignity. Green symbolizes hope. White represents purity. The colors originated from the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK in 1908.

Marked annually on March 8th, women's day is one of the most important days of the year to celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness about women's equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity and fundraise for female-focused charities.

The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists, isn't enough. Action is needed to level the playing field.

The international women's day sheds light on the great achievements of women in various fields. Empowering women is a great responsibility at present in the 21st century. It is necessary for gender equality and social dignity.

In the olden days, women were confined to the home and were not allowed to step out of the house for work. But today's society has seen a lot of changes. Today, women have started realising their strength. They are contributing to the success of their home and the entire society. Modern women are no longer dependent. She is strong and selfconfident.We should respect each of them. Not because of gender, but because of their identity. We must agree that both women and men contribute to the development of the home and community. You can see women reaching greater heights and even traveling to space. They are entering into all fields and are making success everywhere they go. As you know Kalpana Chawla, she was selected in honour of her prominent place in world history. She was the first women of Indian descent to go to space. She held commercial pilots license for single and multi-engine aeroplanes. We can proudly say even Chawla's accidental death is an inspiration to the modern women. You know Malala Youasfzai, at her early period, she became world popular, pointing her finger for the rights to women education. Yes, she is the youngest person ever to win a Nobel peace prize, just in the age of 14.

In this auspicious occasion, we should be inspired from the iron ladies like Wilma Rudolph. Wilma Rudolph was a sickly child who had to wear a brace on her left leg. She overcame her disabilities to complete Olympic games in 1960, she became the first American women to win three gold medals in track and field at a single Olympic.

So, on this international women's day, let's recognize the importance of women in our lives and to the society and motivate them for greater future achievements.

Off to Mada'in Saleh I was gradually settling down and was waiting for the team from Bangladesh, when one day I was summoned to the Director's office. He said he had a small problem. There was a dispensary under the hospital out in the desert manned by just a male nurse. The Amir (headman) of the village being very influential had been demanding for a doctor for quite some time and finally the Ministry decided to post a doctor in the dispensary and our director was asked to send a GP from the hospital. None of the other GPs, who were all Egyptians, wanted to go and the Chief Medical Officer who was also an Egyptian recommended that I, being the junior-most doctor in the hospital be asked to take charge of the upgraded dispensary.

The director handed over my posting order and explained that since all the other GPs were living with their families (I had not yet taken my wife) it would be difficult for them, as tin-houses or tents were the only accommodation available in the desert.

I was shocked!

“Sir, please give me my passport. I am going back to India. I was not starving in India. And I am a qualified doctor who can stand on his own feet” The director smiled at me. “Wait a minute. You think about this and tell me tomorrow. The place where you are posted is Mada'in Saleh (Cities of Saleh). It is a historic place quoted in the 'Holy Quran'; where the prophet Saleh lived. It is the only place in the world, other than Petra in Jordan, where they have huge rock carved monumental necropolis to bury the dead The people are very nice and the Amir is a thorough gentleman. And I will call you back the moment the Bangladesh doctors are here. You please oblige me for a fortnight.”

I walked out of the room. I was almost in tears. Why was I being singled out every time somebody had to be obliged?

Dr. Akhtar, our Ophthalmologist and a senior doctor from Tamil Nadu comforted me.

“We all have difficulties when we come to a new place. This is only for a fortnight. Take it as a vacation because there is absolutely no work there. You may have to see a maximum of 5 or 6 patients a day. Cool down and think about it before deciding to go back to India.”

Later in the day Dr. Mohan, the physician, introduced me to an engineer from Karnataka whom he had met from the hospital. He was delighted to know that I was posted in Mada'in Saleh.

“I am Wodeyar, an architect by profession. I work with an archeological team at the historic site of Mada'in Saleh.”

Their company had a huge setup and was involved in restoring all the historic monuments and buildings in Mada'in Saleh. The dispensary was just adjacent to their quarters and he promised to make arrangements for my food and accommodation. They had no company doctor and they had to come all the way to our hospital at Al Ula for medical facilities. He was thus really happy to hear about my posting.

I agreed to give Mada'in Saleh a trial. But I threatened my director that I will return back if I found it difficult to survive.

The trip to Mada'in Saleh was by itself an experience. We set out on a 4WD Nissan Patrol. After a couple of kilometres from the city, the asphalt road ended and then we travelled by a mud road with gardens of date palms all around. A few more kilometres of garden all round and abruptly we reached the end of the road. Stretching in front of us was a desert, with endless sand everywhere. There was no road to be seen anywhere but my driver rode on right into the desert. A few minutes later I found myself in the vehicle totally cut off from any sensible landmark.

I asked my driver whether he knew where he was taking me. He smiled and then rattled off, I knew not what, for the next five minutes. He slowed down to 70 to 80 kms/hr. when the ground below was hard and rocky, but accelerated to above 120 kms/hr. when it was total sand. I later learnt that even with sand tyres and 4-wheel drive, if you slowed down over thick sand, you can get stranded there; it was something similar to driving over thick mud. Driving over sand required special technique and skill; and you should know your route very well.

An hour's drive through the desert and we finally saw trees and make shift houses in the distance. We reached a small building well-constructed in stone. Our vehicle stopped in front of it an out came a short plump elderly man.

“Welcome to Mada'in Saleh. I am Chowdhury from Pakistan and I am the male nurse in this dispensary.”

Guest of honour Though my stay in Mada'in Saleh was short, my experiences there were rich and varied and will be remembered throughout my life.

I was officially invited to the Amir's house very soon after joining. He had arranged a grand party inviting all the elders of the village to welcome the first doctor of Mada'in Saleh.

His house was an enclosed area with plenty of open space inside. It was one of the few brick houses in Mada'in Saleh. My first exposure to Saudi culture and tradition was obtained from there. Some of the guests had already arrived when I reached his house sharp on time. The Amir came out to receive me and accompanied me inside.

The guests who had arrived earlier were seated in a large well-ventilated room. The room had no furniture but just a very expensive wall to wall carpet.

All the guests were seated on the floor next to the wall. Pillows and cushions were provided as back-rests or hand-rests. On seeing me, all of them got up and I was taken around and introduced to all the guests. I had to shake hands with all those present there and I really felt like a VVIP. I was seated next to the Amir and was provided with a pillow, a cushion and a wooden hand-rest covered with foam and velvet. Well, I really enjoyed it, seated next to the Amir in royal style, with all eyes focused on me.

The people tried to have a conversation with me in Arabic, and since I did not know the language, the Amir replied to all of them. The Amir too did not know English and so I never understood the questions nor the answers. All I knew was that they were directed towards me. So, I sat there smiling like a buffoon at all those who asked me questions. My feelings of a VVIP status gradually melted to a VIP status.

Then some more guests arrived. And I found that they all got up and the same process of hand shaking continued again. I too had to get up and shake hands with the newcomers. It was only then that I realized that it was customary to greet each of them personally and enquire about his health and welfare. Moreover, they also hugged each other after the handshake. So, what I had received was just the normal formal welcome. My feelings of VIP status further melted to an IP status. At least I was an important person, because the party was in honor of me and seated next to the Amir; all of them tried to be very nice to me.

Since I did not know much of the language, I sat and watched their mannerisms and attire. They wore the common 'thoop' – the long following dress up to the ankle with the typical headgear on top and the double ring.

The well to do people wore plain white 'thoop' and the common man wore coloured ones mostly shades of dark brown. The Amir and a few others wore plain white cloth on their head with the black double ring. All the others wore the typical red and white checkered headgear. I felt that the baldies were really lucky because nobody knew whether they had hair or not.

Their conversation was boisterous and at times I thought they were fighting with each other when the verbal exchanges were very loud. But my male nurse Chowdhury who had accompanied me assured that it happened when they got excited and there were absolutely no harsh words spoken. I was reminded of a friend of mine back home and I felt that I was in the company of many such friends speaking in a strange tongue.

“Good evening doctor. How do you find the company?”

That was a new person who had just come in. I was relieved. Well, here was someone who could speak English.

He was soft spoken unlike the others and well mannered. He had his education in the US and he had visited India many times, mainly Bombay.

He was happy to know that I was from India as he had very great respect for Indians. He considered Indian doctors as the best ones among those from the developing countries and believed that Indians were really hardworking people. During the course of the conversation, he informed that the affluent Saudis take off to Europe or the United States for their vacation and the less privileged ones to Cairo. And to the common man, the middle-class Saudi, Bombay was the best place for a vacation. But he was sorry to find that my knowledge of Bombay, especially the night life, was limited. Actually, till then I thought I knew Bombay fairy well. (to be continued)

Annie, was bit gloomy and bored now, now it's evening 6 pm, She is waiting to become night and when she wakes up morning she will be free from the quarantine that makes her completely a free bird from those 14 days of quarantine. Annie, 26 years old smart young lady who is working as a staff nurse in hospital after her nursing course. She is, so talented, active and smart girl who will easily mingle with everyone without hesitation. Because of this personality, sitting alone is a nightmare for her and this quarantine makes her some what put into a jail.

14 days back, she was assigned with a patient, Arun, 20 years boy with complaint of fever, cough for 3 days, while receiving to emergency department, he was having a high grade fever. His mother was along with him who was a lottery selling women was so much afraid that whether something will happen to my son.

Because, he was the only future and life of her. Annie, who got assigned with that patient gave care and supportive measures in order to relieve from fever. Her interaction and care makes his mother so comfortable and gave a hope for his child. Suddenly, Arun vomited over the Sr. Annie's body and becomes drowsy. His vitals were falling and suddenly it becomes a crisis situation and patient went unresponsive. Within a fraction of seconds, the emergency unit becomes so dramatic, Suddenly Arun gets intubated (mechanical ventilation support) and shifted to critical care ICU. Sr. Annie was actively participated in all activities and accompanied to ICU. By the time they realized Arun is having Covid-19 positive test result which makes all of the hospital team to a silence.

Mary mother hospital is a small 150 bedded hospital with few facilities. It was their first case reported with covid-19. So more care given to patient as well as hospital staff also and transferred the patient to medical college and made the staff to stay in quarantine.

Even though, Mary mother hospital is a Small hospital, it was the only hospital in that village, which makes a busy and popular one. Because of this, Sr. Annie would not get a proper off or leave and would not get a satisfied and calm meal time. Initially she became

statue by hearing primary contact of covid patient.

Later she realized, 14 days of quarantine is some what a heaven to her to realize all her stress and build her body.

First three days, she slept as much as she want and ate foods spent time by watching movies. She was so happy that no work load and even thank God for this opportunity. Later she started to realize, it is bit boring, because nobody is with her to talk and all the time sitting alone makes some more lazy. Even though chatting through phone relieves some boredom, but not constantly.

One day, through windows, she noticed that there was a bird, who is making a nest for their little ones to live.

Suddenly she remembered Arun. She immediately make a call to her friend and enquired about him. She said, he passed away from medical college, 2 days after reaching. By hearing those sad news, tears come from her eyes and smiling face of Arun came to her mind.

She prayed for his soul.

When the days goes on, Annie became more gloomy and waiting to get out of this quarantine time even though she knew, this stressful time will change, but she was eagerly waiting why it is not changing. She even realized, busy work schedule is more comfortable than sitting alone in one room.

As all of us says time changes the man's mind. This crucial time period made Annie to think more and more and made her to pray the God to change the pandemic situation.

Annie woke up with the alarm, she was so tired and there is dark spots over the eyes, since last night she did not slept, because today her covid test result will come. the result came, it is negative. She is so happy and excited and bit busy to pack her bags and to go to her near ones and her second family, that is none other than her Mary mother hospital. To everyone their workplace is their second family and there will be a time to realize it.

Today, Annie is bit busy in her work, even though she skipped her meal but enjoying her life with patient who thinks that they are the angels in the world.

Fall Prevention in the Elderly Falls and fall related injury is the third leading cause of chronic disability in the elderly. Falls have a significant impact on the elderly persons life as it may lead to fractures, fear of falling, loss of independence and decreased quality of life. One in three among those above 65years will have experienced atleast one fall in a year. The risk of fall increases with ageing. Falls are the major cause of injury related hospitalisation in people above 65 years.

Even if there is no physical injuries, the fall may cause downward spiral in the quality of life due to fear of falling, restriction of activities, dependence in activities of daily living(ADL),becoming frail, reduced mobility, de conditioning and finally bed boundedness.
