Editor´s letter Advertising Era

ON THE BASIS OF BEING EXPOSED to the goodness of brand names for generations, our own culture has grown as accustomed to advertising as it is to traffic or rises in the cost of electricity. It’s part of the DNA of the market: without advertising there are no materialistic dreams to follow.

Advertising is merely a reflection of our times. It takes care to remind us that our cars could be faster, our dogs happier and our shirts whiter; and that our latest gizmos, perfumes and hairstyles, in less time than it takes to sing a jingle, are now out of fashion (take advantage of the sales to get the latest update!). Since its beginnings, this age old art has met with a lack of confidence and belief, obliging advertising people to modify the tone of their siren calls in line with the dictates of each era.

At present, as well as paying the wages of the super stars of sport, advertising supports, literally, entire businesses. In a world that marches to the rhythm of technology, the models for its use are exposed to the biggest test of Darwinism in its history: renovate or die. All the time there are more companies moving into this niche of the market thanks to advertisers.

The trend of ‘Do it yourself’ has reached the business world and advertising is, in the majority of cases, the only means of survival for many companies that are looking to raise their heads; their passport to independence.

From the point of view of brand names, the possibilities are even greater. New methods for the free distribution of contents are preparing to make the big leap, enabling money to be made out of these spaces, while traditional models specialize in improving and giving more power than ever to the experience of the advertiser. The combination of both methods allows brands to achieve greater diversity and reach in their campaigns; for the companies, it means more security, for the consumers a bigger choice. The Advertising Era is back.

Desde sus inicios, este milenario arte se ha topado con la desconfianza y la incredulidad, obligando a los publicitarios a modular sus cantos de sirena según el dictado de cada tiempo.

En la actualidad, además de pagar las nóminas de las súper estrellas del deporte, la publicidad permite sostener, literalmente, negocios enteros. Ante un mundo que cambia al ritmo de la tecnología, los modelos de explotación se exponen a la mayor prueba darwinista de su historia: renovarse o morir.

Cada vez hay más empresas que se mueven en esa fisura del mercado gracias a los anunciantes. La corriente del ‘Hazlo tú mismo’ ha llegado al mundo empresarial y la publicidad es, en la mayoría de los casos, la única fuente de supervivencia para muchas compañías que buscan asomar la cabeza; su pasaporte a la independencia.

Desde la perspectiva de las marcas, las posibilidades son aún mayores. Los nuevos modelos de distribución gratuita de contenidos se preparan para dar el gran salto, la rentabilización de sus espacios, mientras que los modelos tradicionales se especializan en mejorar y potenciar más que nunca la experiencia del anunciante. La combinación de ambos soportes permite a las marcas una mayor diversificación y alcance de sus campañas; a las empresas, una mayor seguridad, y a los consumidores, una mayor capacidad de elección. The designer is one of those sorts of characters that live stuck to their time like limpets. After more than 20 years in the breach, he has never

disappeared from the news. Ferran Adrià is a similar case. His story was the cover one in issue number 2, in 2008, but his name has not stopped appearing in the media for a single day. Nobody really knows what El Bulli has turned into, but we all recognize the cook, instinctively, as one of the best in the world. To stay up to date, like them, something very simple is also necessary. Good publicity.

Una revista no entiende de brechas temporales, sino de regularidad y actualidad. La edición pasada de Babylon se quedó, en cambio, partida entre dos décadas. Custo Dalmau ocupó la portada, aunque es cierto que hubiera podido ser así, con el mismo derecho, diez números antes. El diseñador pertenece a ese tipo de personajes que viven adheridos al tiempo como lapas. Después de más de 20 años en la brecha, no ha desparecido jamás de

la actualidad. Ferran Adrià es un caso parecido. Su historia fue portada en el número #2, en 2008, pero su nombre no ha dejado de salir en los medios ni un solo día. Nadie sabe realmente en qué se ha convertido El Bulli, pero todos reconocemos al cocinero, instintivamente, como uno de los mejores del mundo.

Hasta el número #15, no lo hemos entendido. Para permanecer en el tiempo, como ellos, también es necesario algo muy simple. Buena publicidad.

Keep in touch IN MADRID THERE ARE MANY professional musicians from Lliria (Valencia), the town where I was born and where since I was small I developed a love for classical music. From a distance, speaking with you in Madrid, reminds me of

Ibarra Real: resuscitated Nobelleaks

IN MARCH BABYLON MAGAZINE will be presenting the third edition of I love Spain, the Spanish networking sessions in London that each year attract more attention. As on the previous occasions, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain will be working with the Babylon team on organizing the event.

This year between 200 and 300 invited guests are expected to attend, among whom will be members of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and of Spanish and Latin American official and cultural entities based in London, as well as British companies with interests in Spain and its culture. In this way Babylon will strengthen its presence in 2011 in the United Kingdom, a country in which it distributes 15,000 copies every two months and where it promotes Spanish culture through the organization of and participation in various annual events.

THESE DAYS WE ARE NOT accustomed to the release of books that can also be considered pieces of art. With a few exceptions, nobody takes so much care with the process of publishing to the point where the final product becomes a unique object. En 1780, the Spanish Royal Academy (RAE) placed an order with the printer Joaquín Ibarra for an edition of Quijote that has gone down in history as a jewel of bibliography. “I found around the world miraculous travel books, incredible Quijotes, printed by Ibarra”, Pablo Neruda said in his autobiography about this edition of the work by Cervantes, known as the Quijote de la Academia (and also de Ibarra). The printer selected a special typography for the work, designed by Francisco Javier de Santiago Palomares and later copied by Jerónimo Antonio Gil. The Ibarra Real family was recuperated and vectorized in 2007, and Babylon wanted to pay tribute in this issue to the maestro Ibarra by including the typeface in the report by the writer Soledad Puértolas about the secondary characters of don Quijote.

Their two stratotypes (Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), geological fault lines that serve as a model for defining and recognizing the unity and limits of the different strata, have just been chosen as the best place in the world to study the period known in geologist speak as the Eocene.

This was the age on Earth, 55 million years ago, when some of the planet’s most important mountain ranges were formed, among them the Alps and the Himalayas. Stanley Finney, president of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), drove a Golden Spike into the ground at the foot of both lines. The spike symbolizes the global importance of the flysch (a sequence of rock formations that alternate between hard and softer layers) found in the province of Guipuzcoa.

FITUR '11 : Economic lesson Every January they release the main data for the Spanish tourism sector, and for an economic activity so dependant on statistics the start of the year can at times prove stressful. For a change, this past January was a sweet one. All the prophecies went up in smoke. Spain closed 2010 with some notable results. The number of international tourists rose by 1%, with the total of visitors to Spain reaching 52.6 million, the first rise registered since the pre-crisis year of 2007. Yet again, the United Kingdom topped the ranking of tourist generating countries, making up 23.6% of the total. The second most important market was Germany with a market share of 16.7%, followed by France with 8.1 million visitors. At the world’s biggest tourism fair, Fitur, which every January presents a Planet Earth in miniature, the euphoria behind the latest figures could be felt in the atmosphere. This super forum in Madrid has become over the last few years one of the most reliable thermometers of the Spanish economy, and 2011 looks at last to be bubbling.

Babylon´s Bazaar What's happening on the spanish cultural scene What started as a simple burning of waste from carpentry shops has turned into one of the most spectacular fiestas in the world. The city of Valencia will resound and burn between 15 and 19 March with the fiesta of Las Fallas, in which giant papier mache sculptures, each a work of art, will be set ablaze.

The first edition of the festival Film&Cook, a novel idea that brings together independent cinema and gastronomy, is on its way to Barcelona. All this at the FAD (Catalan Arts and Design Centre) from 11 to 13 March.

Reality vs. Fiction

SPANISH DOCUMENTARIES RECOUP THEIR PRESTIGE AND GAIN GROUND IN THE CINEMA. EL DOCUMENTAL ESPAÑOL RECUPERA EL PRESTIGIO Y GANA TERRENO EN LAS SALAS DE CINE. WORDS BY MIKEL CANO

EVER SINCE THE LUMIERE brothers’ Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, back in 1895, had spectators leaving the cinemas bewildered, the genre of documentaries has undergone a roller coaster ride. Following that initial impulse, the arrival of fiction (and with it bigger profits) in cinemas cut the number of documentaries in the first half of the twentieth century. It wasn’t until the boom of television when they began to reemerge from the ashes. But they did so in line with the moulds and restrictions of television. They lost, in part, the concept of the documentary as a cinematic genre. This was especially evident in Spain where for a long time they were seen as a lesser genre, with a few memorable exceptions such as Las Hurdes, by Buñuel.

Now the trend has changed. In the last few years we have seen an explosion of documentaries around the world, a global renovation movement that has been particularly successful in Spain.

The commitment to new (and old) directors such as Llorenç Soler, Javier Corcuera, Mercedes Álvarez and Cristian Poveda (who was murdered in El Salvador in 2009 after filming La vida loca, (The Mad Life) a documentary about young gang members, and the creation of festivals, like DocumentaMadrid and Zinebi (Bilbao) have made this recuperation possible.

In 2001, the first ever prize for a long documentary was handed over at the Premio Goya awards ceremony. The winner was En construcción, one of the most widely distributed Spanish films in cinemas along with La pelota vasca, (The Basque Ball: Skin Against Stone)

by Julio Médem. This year, two films are the favourites: Bicicleta, cuchara, manzana, which tells the story of the former prime minister of Catalonia, Pasqual Maragall, and his fight against Alzheimer’s; and How much does your building weigh, Mr. Foster? about British architect Norman Foster.

DESDE QUE LA LLEGADA del tren a la ciudad de los Lumiere, allá por 1895, provocara que los espectadores salieran turbados de la sala de cine, el género documental ha vivido en una montaña rusa.

Después del impulso inicial, la llegada de la ficción (y sus mayores beneficios) a las salas mermaron su proyección en la primera mitad del siglo XX. No fue hasta el boom de la televisión cuando resurgió de sus cenizas. Pero lo hizo bajo los moldes y ataduras televisivas. Se perdió, en parte, el concepto del documental como género cinematográfico, algo que se notó singularmente en España, donde durante mucho tiempo ha sido considerado un género menor, con excepciones memorables como LasHurdes, de Buñuel.

La tendencia ha cambiado. En los últimos años hemos asistido a la explosión del documental en el mundo, un movimiento de renovación global que ha tenido una de sus mejores versiones en España. La apuesta de nuevos (y viejos) directores, como Llorenç Soler, Javier Corcuera, Mercedes Álvarez o Cristian Poveda (murió asesinado en 2009 en El Salvador, tras filmar La vida loca, un documental sobre los jóvenes pandilleros de las ‘maras’); y la creación de nuevos festivales, como DocumentaMadrid o Zinebi (Bilbao) han hecho posible la recuperación.

En 2001, se entregó por primera vez el Premio Goya al mejor largo documental; entonces lo ganó En construcción, uno de las producciones nacionales que mayor difusión ha logrado en los cines junto con La pelota vasca, de Julio Médem. Este año, destacan como favoritas dos cintas: Bicicleta, cuchara, manzana, que narra la lucha del ex presidente catalán, Pasqual Maragall, contra el Alzheimer; y How much does your building weigh, Mr. Foster?, sobre el arquitecto británico Norman Foster.

BM: How do you see the prospects for documentaries in Spain?

IL: To me it looks hopeful, although it’s still early days. There have always been great filmmakers whose legacy has stood out (Buñuel, Val del Omar, Esteva, Erice, Portabella, Patino, Jordà...) before they find others to take over.

BM: Can the frontier between fiction and reality be blurred?

IL: No, to me it’s basic that we keep on differentiating between Shoah and Schindler’s List, that they are not the same.

BM: What ways are there to show off the genre?

IL: The Internet is the current one.

I don’t understand the supposed division that some media have made between creators/internauts as a result of the controversy over authors’ rights.

BM: What are you working on at the moment?

IL: I am in Switzerland, finishing off the post-production of my next full length film, Los pasos dobles, which was filmed in Mali a few months ago.

BM: ¿Cómo ves el panorama del documental en España?

IL: Me parece esperanzador, es algo muy incipiente. Siempre había habido grandes cineastas cuyo legado quedaba aislado (Buñuel, Val del Omar, Esteva, Erice, Portabella, Patino, Jordà...) antes de que encontraran continuadores.

BM: ¿Se puede difuminar la frontera entre ficción y realidad?

IL: No, me parece fundamental que sigamos distinguiendo que Shoah y La lista de Schindler no son lo mismo.

BM: ¿Qué vías de exhibición tiene el género?

IL: Internet es el presente. No he entendido esta supuesta división que han hecho algunos medios entre creadores/internautas a raíz de la polémica de los derechos de autor.

BM: ¿En qué estás trabajando ahora?

IL: Estoy en Suiza, terminando la postproducción de mi próximo largometraje, Los pasos dobles, rodado en Mali hace unos meses.

Russian Red is preparing a new disc, but this time Lourdes Hernández has signed up with a big name label (EMI) and has gone to record it in France. It seems that their records have pushed the group towards a sound with more commercial tendencies, with session musicians and more professional recording, taking into account that the last disc was practically a home recording.

Vetusta Morla have received offers from many multinational companies and major labels, but have passed them all by. As they have been doing up to now, it’s a case of a disc completely self-managed by the lads themselves. Their first new song sounds more or less like what the Madrid group has always done.

There are not going to be any great novelties in this year’s disc.

La Bien Querida have once again recorded with the guy who is now a member of the group in his own right, David, their producer, who since their previous disc has become the lieutenant of the group. The musicians are the same and their sound, in general, is similar to the last disc. A little more varied perhaps, with more middle of the road and a few numbers close to rumbas.

New Raemon already have a couple of new songs on their web page to have a listen to. On one hand, they are preparing a project for a mini LP together with Francisco Nixon, with whom they have been giving quite a few concerts. On the other, their new disc, which is to be released this next spring, has a similar sound to the previous ones, although with more musical richness and added instruments.

Russian Red prepara nuevo disco, pero en esta ocasión Lourdes Hernández ha fichado por un sello importante (Emi) y se ha ido a grabar a Francia. Parece que la discográfica ha empujado al grupo hacia un sonido con tendencias más comerciales, con músicos de sesión y una grabación más profesional, teniendo en cuenta que el anterior disco lo grabó prácticamente en casa.

Vetusta Morla ha recibido ofertas de muchas multinacionales y sellos gordos, pero ha pasado de todo el mundo. Como han venido haciendo los chicos hasta ahora, se trata de un disco completamente autogestionado por ellos mismos.

Su primera canción nueva suena más o menos a lo que ha sonado siempre el grupo de Madrid. No va a haber grandes novedades en su disco de este año.

La Bien Querida ha vuelto a grabar con el que es ya un miembro de pleno derecho del grupo, David, su productor, quien desde el disco anterior se ha convertido en el lugarteniente del grupo.

Los músicos son los mismos y el sonido, en general, es similar al del disco anterior. Un poco más variado quizás, con más medios tiempos y algún tema que se acerca a la rumba.

New Raemon ya tiene un par de canciones nuevas en su web para poder echarles un vistazo. Por un lado, están preparando un proyecto de mini LP conjunto con Francisco Nixon, con el que ha estado dando bastantes conciertos.

Por el otro, el disco nuevo, que saldrá la próxima primavera, posee un sonido similar a los anteriores, aunque con más riqueza musical y más instrumentos.

Luis J. Menéndez Music in the air The panorama of the music industry is in the air. We are all waiting on the (new Spanish) Sinde law. But, with the law or without it, if in any way they manage to halt free downloads, it would see disc sales take off. However, it is complicated because the technological tricks are always one step ahead of the law. What’s more, downloads enjoy widespread social support. The argument that discs are very expensive is a bit misleading. Before they were sold at a price that allowed them to make money and people to buy them. Now, they seem very expensive to everybody and yet, on the other hand, nobody complains about the rise in prices for live music. The music business, meanwhile, will continue focusing on concerts and the big labels keep supporting festivals and magazines… Nowadays, it’s the brewers and the clothes’ makers who are the ones providing the daily bread for music people.

El panorama de la industria musical está en el aire. Todos estamos a la expectativa de la Ley Sinde.

Pero, con ley o sin ella, si de alguna forma se consiguiesen parar las descargas gratuitas se volvería a disparar la venta de discos. No obstante, es complicado, porque las triquiñuelas tecnológicas siempre van un paso por delante de la ley y, además, las descargas gozan de gran respaldo social. El argumento de que los discos son muy caros es un poco tramposo.

Antes estaban a un precio que permitía ganar dinero y que la gente los comprase. Ahora, a todo el mundo le parecen carísimos y, por contra, nadie se queja de la subida de precios de la música en directo. El negocio de la industria, mientras tanto, irá enfocado hacia los conciertos y a que las grandes marcas sigan apoyando festivales o revistas… Pues hoy en día, las empresas cerveceras o de ropa, son las que están dando de comer a la gente de la música.

While at the end of January the first virtual art fair, VIP Art Fair, collapsed from the massive number of people logging in, and the company A & F Markets invented the sale of shares in works of art, in Spain only the major fairs are capable of injecting adrenaline into the market. ARCO, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this February, is - in spite of the criticismone of the most necessary events.

Since 1982, the number of visitors to this contemporary art fair has grown by some 600%, although those who go to look still outnumber those who go to buy. The Spanish auction houses keep on growing but they don’t reach the level of Christie's, which has just announced profits of 3.3 billion dollars, 53% more than in 2009. For its part, the network of galleries keeps growing stronger, with salons such as López de Aragón and Caylus (Madrid), Déborah Elvira (Castellón) and Artur Ramon (Barcelona) going in March to the 24th edition of The European Fine Art Fair (Tefaf) in Maastricht, one of the most elitist and influential fairs in the world.

Spanish museums have suffered the blade of the knife in the flesh. Several significant if lesser centres have already been obliged to close, and the majority of the big ones have had to adjust their business models to weather the storm.

The most notable example is the closure of the Chillida-Leku museum. Located at Hernani, it held a valuable collection of the works of Eduardo Chillida, one of the most dazzling Spanish sculptors in history. It’s a case of an undefined rather than a definitive closure. The family of the maestro are still negotiating with public institutions to find a way to reopen it, following the failure of private management.

The museum of the history of Alcañiz has also had to hang up the closed sign because of a lack of resources. And a similar fate has been suffered by museums about the Battle of the Ebro in Fatarella and Vilalba dels Arcs, that have not managed to stay open more than nine months. Just added to the list of closures are the Religious Art Museum in Málaga and the Centro José Guerrero in Granada. Others have not quite reached the same extreme, but have gone on to a war footing. These include the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, which has closed its library and is no longer hosting outside exhibitions.

Fortunately, and in contrast to the forecasts made in 2009, the major museums have shown during the crisis that the quality of what they offer is self-sufficient, although all of them have suffered adjustments. In 2010, the Guggenheim in Bilbao increased its number of visitors by 6%, while Madrid’s Golden Triangle of Art (the Reina Sofía, up 10%; the Thyssen, by 2.4%; and the Prado, down 1.17%) timidly reaffirmed its leadership.

El ejemplo más notable es el cierre del museo Chillida-Leku. Se trata de una clausura indefinida pero no definitiva; la familia del maestro aún está negociando con las instituciones públicas una vía para su reapertura, tras el fracaso de la gestión privada. El museo de Historia de Alcañiz también ha tenido que colgar el cartel de cerrado por falta de recursos. Y destino similar han sufrido los museos sobre la batalla del Ebro, en Fatarella y Vilalba dels Arcs, que no han superado los nueve meses de vida. A la lista de cierres se acaban de sumar también el Museo de Arte Sacro de Málaga y el Centro José Guerrero, en Granada. Sin llegar a ese extremo, otros han aplicado una economía de guerra, como el Museo Patio Herreriano de Valladolid, que ha cerrado su biblioteca y ya no acoge exposiciones externas.

Por suerte, y en contra de las previsiones de 2009, los grandes museos han refrendado durante la crisis que la calidad de su oferta es autosuficiente, aunque todos han sufrido reajustes. En 2010, el Guggenheim de Bilbao aumentó un 6% sus visitas, mientras que el triángulo del Arte de Madrid (Reina Sofía, +10%; Thyssen, +2,4%; Prado, -1,17%) revalidó -con timidez- su liderazgo.

Mientras a finales de enero la primera feria virtual de arte, VIP Art Fair, se caía de la red debido a las entradas masivas o la empresa A & F Markets inventaba la venta de acciones de obras de arte, en España sólo las grandes ferias son capaces de inyectar adrenalina en el mercado. ARCO, que este febrero cumple 30 años, es -a pesar de las críticas- uno de los eventos más necesarios. Desde 1982, el número de visitantes de la feria de arte contemporáneo ha aumentado un 600%, aunque los que miran todavía son más que los que compran.

Las casas de subastas españolas se mantienen en proyección pero no llegan al nivel de Christie's, que acaba de anunciar beneficios de 3,3 mil millones de dólares, un 53% más que en 2009. Por su parte, el entramado de galerías sigue fortaleciéndose, y salas como López de Aragón y Caylus (Madrid), Déborah Elvira (Castellón) y Artur Ramon (Barcelona) acudirán en marzo a la 24 edición de The European Fine Art Fair (Tefaf), en Maastricht, una de las ferias más elitistas e influyentes del mundo.

Leo Margets bets 10,000 dollars every month, and when she plays online can end up playing six games of poker at once on three different screens. The woman from Catalonia looks like a character out of a Stieg Larsson novel. She’s 27 years old, studied Economics in London –where she still lives-, is attractive, swears like a trooper, and enjoys the White Stripes, Kubrick and Saramago. What’s more, she has an extraordinary talent. She plays poker like an authentic demon. “You have to put pressure on your rival, to vex him, try to put him in a difficult situation where he has to make tricky decisions”. She’s not a hacker like Lisbeth Salander, but Leo belongs to that same generation of young and independent rebels who triumph outside the orthodox canons of the system, in the era of chaos and hedonism. She recognizes this. “I’ve set myself up well. Not having to wake up early is the biggest luxury I can allow myself. ” After two years of apprenticeship and intensive studies, in 2009 her name ended up at number 27 out of a total of 7,000 players at the World Championships in Las Vegas, making her the best female European in the history of the tournament. “I realized my vocation when, one day, without having the faintest idea, I picked up a poker magazine and said to my boyfriend: ‘I’m going to do something in the world of poker’. It was a sector that was just emerging, there was still plenty of room…” Leo’s story is not one of money or luck, but of a search. “Every day I get up and feel happy. Work should be like this, and not something that turns you off.

For me poker is fulfilling. It’s not the only thing, fortunately, but I love it.”

Tras dos años de aprendizaje y estudio intensivo, en 2009 su nombre terminó en el puesto 27, entre un total de 7.000 jugadores, en el Campeonato del Mundo de Las Vegas, convirtiéndose en la mejor europea en toda la historia del torneo. “Me di cuenta de mi vocación cuando, un día, sin tener ni puta idea, cogí una revista de póker y le dije a mi chico: ‘yo voy a hacer algo en el mundo del póker’.

Era un sector súper emergente, aún había mucho margen…”. La de Leo no es una historia de dinero ni de suerte, sino la de un búsqueda. “Yo cada día me levanto y me siento contenta. El trabajo tendría que ser esto, y no algo que te aliena. A mí me llena el póker. No es lo único, por suerte, pero me encanta.”

Asparagus goes very well with nuts such as walnuts, hazel nuts and almonds. Although, without doubt, they look much more elegant accompanied by pine kernels.

Permeating a melon with the aroma of lemon is an ideal technique for adding more flavour. To do it we inject a needle into a green lemon and then the piece of melon until we manage to pass on the aroma.

Clarifying broth is a very old cooking technique. It involves straining the broth to get rid of any impurities and fibre, achieving the effect of making it transparent.

Roman cauliflower is a hybrid of broccoli and cauliflower, very rich in vitamin C and fibre. Having a very delicate taste, it adds a lot of texture to raw dishes.

Cream of beetroot with olive oil is an ideal accompaniment for cubes of cheese covered in breadcrumbs and fried.

Francis Bacon WHEN THE LITTLE JOSÉ (born in Jerez de la Frontera, 1955) started to sing four decades ago at the Basílica de la Merced, he never imagined just how widespread and acclaimed a career he had in front of him. From a good flamenco upbringing, José Mercé took his artistic name from the district in which he grew up. Possessor of a soul that is enchantingly rebellious and close to his people, the man from Jerez confesses to being a great admirer of the poet Miguel Hernández and the depth of his verses. The flamenco singing of this Madrid-based Andalusian has evolved in a way that is always fresh and full of life. On top of his own extensive repertoire of hits has to be added memorable versions of others such as Al Alba by Luis Eduardo Aute and Clandestino by Manu Chao. But it was his work Aire that made him widely known in 2000. His latest disc, Ruido (Noise), was released in May 2010, becoming the 17th in his career. Recorded live, as the singer songwriter has become accustomed to, he appears accompanied by his inseparable companion Moraíto Chico, along with three other great maestros, reverberating the essence of flamenco in both voice and guitar. Shortly before his last big concert of the year, at the Barbican in London, where he received a standing ovation for his style of flamenco, Mercé spilled out his flamenco soul for Babylon, drop by drop.

CUANDO EL PEQUEÑO JOSÉ (Jerez de la Frontera, 1955) empezaba a cantar, hace ya cuatro décadas, en la Basílica de la Merced, jamás imaginó la amplísima y reconocida carrera que tenía por delante. De cuna bien flamenca, José Mercé adoptó su nombre artístico del barrio que le vio crecer. Dueño de un alma encantadoramente rebelde y cercana al pueblo, el jerezano se confiesa gran admirador del poeta Miguel Hernández y la profundidad de sus versos. El cante flamenco de este andaluz afincado en Madrid ha evolucionado siempre de manera fresca y viva. A su extenso repertorio de éxitos propios se deben añadir versiones memorables como Al Alba de Luis Eduardo Aute o Clandestino de Manu Chao. Pero fue su trabajo Aire el que le dio a conocer masivamente en el 2000. Su último disco, Ruido, fue publicado en mayo de 2010, convirtiéndose el decimoséptimo de su carrera. Grabado en directo, como acostumbra el cantaor, Mercé aparece acompañado al ‘toque’ por su inseparable Moraíto Chico junto a otros tres grandes maestros, reverberando así la esencia del flamenco: voz y guitarra. Minutos antes de su último gran concierto del año, en el londinense The Barbican, cuya audiencia terminó en pie totalmente entregada a su duende, Mercé desgranó para Babylon, gota a gota, su alma flamenca.

BABYLON MAGAZINE: What do you think of the recent listing of flamenco by UNESCO as part of its intangible World Heritage?

JOSÉ MERCÉ: It seems phenomenal to me, although I believe it’s arrived a bit late as flamenco has been known around the world for many years now. I hope this will serve to give flamenco the true value it has. Above all, I am very happy for those who came before us, those who had to fight with the high and mighty of their times. Thanks to them and their battles, today we can earn a dignified living from our profession.

BM: Which way is flamenco singing headed, and are you afraid it is losing its purity?

JM: I wouldn’t say its “purity”, but I do believe that it is evolving in this way for the worse. I really think that young people should first learn the basics, the roots of flamenco, and from there do what they feel is right. I always say that I need an echo that breaks me, that wounds me, that comes to me. A Fernando ‘Terremoto’, a Manuel Soto ‘Sordera’, an‘Agujetas’, an echo of the greats of this art.

BM: You mix flamenco without losing its roots, but have you ever felt ‘clandestine’, like your version of the Manu Chao number?

JM: I have felt that way because I’ve lived very close to it. I am from Jerez, and I lived in Chipiona for many years. Along

The truth is that the illegal smuggling boats are often seen around there, and it’s very hard. Just imagine that they [the sub Saharan immigrants] know that they are going to die crossing the Straits of Gibraltar, and yet they still prefer to die than to be back there. It’s really fucked up. When you live so close to it you realize just how hard it is.

BM: In your last disc you include a poem by Miguel Hernández, Nanas de la Cebolla (Onion Lullaby). When and how did you learn about his work?

JM: I learnt about his poetry when I was 16 or 17 years old, when I was in Buenos Aires. In those days you could not read the works of Miguel Hernández in Spain because they were banned

by Franco. I managed to buy his works in Argentina, and from that moment on I fell in love with Miguel’s poetry. For me he is the deepest poet in Spanish history, and we did this Nanas de la Cebolla in the centenary year of his death as a small tribute to him.

BM: It’s the fourth time that you have appeared in London and you have given concerts all around the world. Did you ever imagine having such a successful career?

JM: I arrived in Madrid when I was 13 years old and I wanted the world to be mine. I am very happy with what I have achieved, but I didn’t expect so much. Fortunately it’s turned out that way and I hope to have the strength to keep on working. The young people who come to see me at the concerts and buy my discs are those that keep me going.

BABYLON MAGAZINE: ¿Qué opinas del reciente reconocimiento del flamenco como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad por parte de la UNESCO? JOSÉ MERCÉ: Me parece fenomenal, aunque creo que llega un poco tarde porque el flamenco es conocido mundialmente desde hace muchos años. Espero que sirva para darle el verdadero valor que tiene. Sobre todo, me da mucha alegría por los de antes, que son los que han tenido que luchar con los señoritos de turno. Gracias a ellos y su lucha hoy en día vivimos dignamente de nuestra profesión.

BM: ¿Hacia dónde se dirige el cante flamenco, temes que se vaya perdiendo su pureza?

JM: Yo no diría “la pureza”, pero sí creo que se está evolucionando en ese sentido para mal. Realmente pienso que la gente joven debe aprender primero la base, la raíz del flamenco, y a partir de ahí hacer lo que ellos crean conveniente. Yo siempre digo que necesito un eco que me rompa, que me hiera, que me llegue. Un Fernando ‘Terremoto’, un Manuel Soto ‘Sordera’, un ‘Agujetas’, un eco de esos grandiosos de este arte.

BM: Fusionas el flamenco sin perder las raíces, ¿pero te has sentido alguna vez ‘clandestino’, como tu versión del tema de Manu Chao?

JM: Me he sentido así porque lo vivo muy de cerca. Yo soy de Jerez, he vivido mucho años en Chipiona, y al lado tenemos Tarifa, de la que todos conocemos su historia, y la verdad es que las pateras se han visto mucho por allí y es muy duro.

Imagínate que ellos [los inmigrantes subsaharianos] saben que se van a morir cruzando el Estrecho y aun así prefieren morir a estar allí. Es muy jodido. Cuando lo vives de cerca te das cuenta de lo duro que es.

BM: En tu último disco incluyes un poema de Miguel Hernández, Nanas de la Cebolla. ¿Cuándo y cómo conociste su obra?

JM: Conocí su poesía con 16 ó 17 años, estando en Buenos Aires. En aquel tiempo, en España no se podía leer a Miguel Hernández porque estaba prohibido por Franco. Pude comprar su obra en Argentina y a partir de ese instante me enamoré de la poesía de Miguel. Para mí es el poeta de mayor profundidad que ha dado España, y nosotros hemos hecho esas Nanas de la Cebolla en el año del centenario de su muerte, como un pequeñito homenaje.

BM: Es la cuarta vez que actúas en Londres y has ofrecido conciertos en todos los rincones del mundo. ¿Imaginabas una carrera así de exitosa?

JM: Yo llegué a Madrid con 13 años y me quería comer el mundo. Estoy muy contento con lo que he conseguido, pero no esperaba tanto. Afortunadamente ha sido así y espero seguir con fuerza para continuar trabajando. La gente joven que viene a verme a los conciertos y compra mis discos son los que me hacen seguir aquí.

Requiem for Morente The 13 December 2010. The world of flamenco dressed in mourning on hearing of the unexpected death of the singer songwriter from Granada, Enrique Morente, the last great benchmark in contemporary flamenco after Camarón de la Isla.

Since then there have been tributes to him from all over Spain, especially in his native Granada. The heartrending song –Habanera Imposible, by Carlos Cano- which Estrella Morente dedicated to her father at a packed funeral service was felt by the whole country. His professional companion, José Mercé, could not hide the pain caused by the death of the writer of Omega (1996), given that his departure had left a “deep footprint” in the national art” in which he had become the “great innovator in flamenco” in recent times. Before he died, the maestro Morente left behind a pearl for lovers of flamenco; he was filming for a documentary Morente: El Barbero de Picasso (Picasso’s barber), by Emilio Ruiz Barrachina, which will be shown for the first time on 23 March in his home province.

Se suceden los homenajes en todo el territorio español, sobre todo en su Granada natal. El desgarrador canto –Habanera Imposible, de Carlos Cano- que dedicó Estrella Morente a su padre en su multitudinario funeral conmocionó a todo el país. Su compañero de profesión, José Mercé, no podía disimular la pena que le producía la muerte del autor de Omega (1996) puesto que su desaparición había dejado una “profunda huella” en el arte nacional al convertirse en el “gran innovador del flamenco” de los últimos tiempos. Antes de morir, el maestro Morente dejaba una perla a los aficionados del flamenco; se encontraba rodando el documental Morente: El Barbero de Picasso, de Emilio Ruiz Barrachina, que se estrenará el próximo 23 de marzo en su tierra natal.

WORDS BY LUCÍA MANRIQUE AFTER LONG YEARS OF DEBATE, the 22 national academies of the Spanish language have finally reached agreement. The winds of change are blowing. The elimination of certain tildes (pronunciation marks) and proposals to change the names of various letters are just some of the most significant novelties. According to the Spanish Royal Academy (RAE), they have tried “to be coherent with the uses of the speakers and the rules of grammar”.

Since last December, the ll and the ch are no longer letters of the alphabet, which has been reduced from 29 to 27. Moreover, more in the way of a proposal than an imposition, in future what is known in Spanish as the Greek i(thelettery) could end up being called “ye”, and the w as “doble uve” (double v, instead of double u). As far as the elimination of tildes is concerned, from now on the word “sólo” will no longer carry a tilde in any form, and monosyllabic words like “guión” (script) or “truhán” (rogue) will also officially lose them, even if their continued use will not be regarded as an orthographical error.

According to Salvador Gutiérrez, coordinator of the Orthography, the reform is “broad, reasoned, explicit and totally clear”. However, its publication has been enveloped in controversy from the beginning. At the heart of the Spanish speaking community the changes have been seen as unnecessary, and the RAE (in the case of Spain) has felt obliged to explain publicly that, in the majority of cases, they are not talking about rules but proposals.

With or without argument, the RAE introduced its new director on 16 December. After various ballots, José Manuel Blecua was elected by an absolute majority to become the 28th person to hold the post since the academy was founded in 1713.

TRAS LARGOS AÑOS DE DEBATES, las veintidós Academias nacionales de la lengua española se han puesto de acuerdo. Soplan vientos de cambio. La eliminación de ciertas tildes o las propuestas para el cambio de nombre de varias letras son algunas de las novedades más significativas. Según la Real Academia Española (RAE), han pretendido “ser coherentes con los usos de los hablantes y las reglas gramaticales”.

Desde el pasado mes de diciembre, la ll y la ch ya no son letras del alfabeto, que ha pasado de tener 27 en lugar de 29. Además, a modo de propuesta y no de imposición, en un futuro la i griega (y) podría pasar a llamarse “ye”, y la w a “doble uve”. En el capítulo de la eliminación de tildes, a partir de ahora la palabra “sólo” no llevará tilde en ningún caso, y palabras monosílabas como “guión” o “truhán” también la perderán oficialmente, aunque su uso no será considerado como falta ortográfica.

Según Salvador Gutiérrez, coordinador de la nueva Ortografía, la reforma es “amplia, razonada, explícita y sumamente clara". Sin embargo, su publicación se ha visto rodeada de polémica desde el principio. En el seno de la comunidad hispanohablante se han valorado las novedades como innecesarias, y la RAE (en el caso español) se ha visto obligada a explicar públicamente que, en la mayoría de los casos, no se trata de normas sino de propuestas.

Con o sin discusiones, la RAE estrenó el pasado 16 de diciembre nuevo director. Después de varias votaciones, José Manuel Blecua se han convertido, por mayoría absoluta, en el número 28 desde que se fundara la academia en 1713.

BM: The critics say that when you were young your artistic language was radical…

AJ: I was more aggresive before. I thought the world was mine for the taking. Now I know that you can say the same in a more relaxed and much more convincing way.

BM: What is the most difficult thing you have illustrated?

AJ: A story about Martians, for an ad by the Directorate General of Traffic.

BM: What sort of covers do you do for The New Yorker?

AJ: From fashion covers to the most heavy from the Iraq war.

nevitably, one of the first questions that we teachers ask in class is why our students are studying Spanish, as if it were easier to answer this than learning pronouns or the much feared subjunctive.

The replies, although different with each group, are deep down always the same.

In some way, all include the essence of what Spain represents for many people.

What comes next are the actual replies of my last group (London, 2010): “to go on holiday”, “to understand flammenco” [sic], “to find Spanish (male) friends (and female ones)”, “to go and live on the beach”, “Lorca”, “to go partying and [I] understand everything” [sic]…

With so much sangría, “matadors” and Almodóvar, one can’t help but smile. This year, however, one of the answers left me deep in thought: “to speak with my son in his language”. My students never fail to surprise me. And I’ve never had so much desire to teach them.

Las respuestas, distintas en cada grupo, son en el fondo siempre las mismas, porque, de algún modo, todas contienen la esencia de lo que España representa para mucha gente. Este año, sin embargo, una de las respuestas me dejó pensativa: “para hablar con mi hijo en su idioma”, decía. Nunca dejan de sorprenderme mis alumnos. Y nunca les he enseñado con más ganas.

Up until the 31 January of this year, the number of nights that the Western Sahara has slept in limbo had reached 12,496. During that time the Saharan people have been trapped in a nightmare in which they are owners of a country without land. In the refugee camps, under the starry sky of the desert, Irish photographer Andrew McConnell has focused his report on the main characters of the exile and wreck of this former Spanish colony. His pictures form part of the exhibition The long Saharan night organized by the group MĂŠdicos del Mundo (Doctors of the World).

have a weak spot for secondary characters, for those who it falls upon, in the different orders of life, to fill the marginal positions and who soon attract the eye of a spectator, a reader, a friend or an unknown person. The secondary character is not seen much, is not to be found in the middle of the action or conversation, but on the periphery, on the fringes, in the corners. We have to make a small movement, a gesture, to move the head a little to see them. These people and these characters, in life and in art, have provided outlets for my imagination which has been entertained rescuing side stories, in taking the eye off the central characters and episodes. From the tales that were read to me as a child, and those I later read and chose of my own accord, I singled out above all those characters who remained a bit in the background, a disoriented toad, a clumsy elephant, a chicken with faded feathers.

The secondary characters in Don Quijote have attracted my attention ever since I did a course on the work of Cervantes, directed by Arturo SerranoPlaja, at the University o f California.

T h e children’s tales and the adventures o f Cervantes’ h e r o , enjoyed in the fullness of youth, op ene d up very different worlds to me, but some of them resulted in my hobby gaining strength. In a way that the imagination, in close alliance with language, showed me how I could walk at my leisure, that there it was possible to lose oneself without fear, and to be moved, to suffer, laugh, think and dream. I decided that was my sort of place.

Without doubt, my interest in secondary characters started with those infant readings. The main characters in those tales always found, along their complicated and dangerous routes, strange allies, as well as unexpected and magical support. They set off in very difficult circumstances and came across obstacles that appeared insurmountable. But the intervention of these characters changed the course of things in a radical way and enabled them to reach a happy ending. Years later, trapped in the adventure of Cervantes’ hero, I went looking in the book for those unexpected and magical elements, those allies who helped them on their way. That is why I have called my presentation Allies. With it I am trying to pay a small tribute to those characters in whom Don Quijote, in his battle to impose his ideals, found courage, stimulus, understanding, friendship, company and a level of complicity, f leeting or permanent, immediate or symbolic. In a way that Don Quijote, in spite of the adversities, makes friends and gives and receives advice. It’s not all obstacles. As in those tales that were read to me and I read in my childhood, the hero comes across allies and keeps going on his way.

He trips and picks himself up, rebuilds his dream time and time again, he doesn’t lose hope. In spite of his famous declaration after the ill-fated adventure of the enchanted boat: “I can’t go any further” (II, xxix, 954), Don Quijote always manages to take a few more steps.

Don Quijote shows us the world of one’s self, of personal will, of personal dreams. It’s not a story. It is the story, the novel by Cervantes.

When we start to talk about Don Quijote, of Sancho, Dulcinea, Marcela, Dorotea, the Knight of the Green Topcoat, the bandit Roque Guinart, we end up talking about Cervantes and his determination to achieve immortality. A treatise about literature that is at the same time a treatise about life. That’s what the work of Cervantes is: literature as a metaphor of life itself, madness as a metaphor of literature.

engo debilidad por los secundarios, por aquellos a quienes, en los diferentes órdenes de la vida y del arte, les toca ocupar posiciones marginales y a quienes de pronto descubre la mirada de un espectador, un lector, un amigo o un desconocido. El secundario es poco visible, no se encuentra en el centro de la acción o del discurso, sino en la periferia, en los flecos, en los rincones. Tenemos que hacer un pequeño movimiento, un gesto, mover un poco la cabeza, para verlo.

Estas personas y estos personajes, en la vida y en el arte, han dado mucho que hacer a mi imaginación, que se ha entretenido rescatando historias laterales, apartando la mirada de los personajes y episodios centrales.

De los cuentos que me leyeron en la infancia y los que luego leí y fui escogiendo por mi cuenta, me fijaba sobre todo en aquellos personajes que se quedaban un poco atrás, un sapo desorientado, un elefante patoso, una gallina de plumaje deslucido.

Los personajes secundarios del Quijote llamaron mi atención desde que, en la Universidad de California, seguí un curso sobre la obra de Cervantes, dirigido por Arturo Serrano-Plaja. Los cuentos de la infancia y las aventuras del héroe de Cervantes, disfrutadas en plena juventud, me mostraron mundos muy distintos, pero unos y otras hicieron que mi afición fuera cobrando fuerza.

En esa vía que la imaginación, en estrecha alianza con la lengua, me mostró, yo podía transitar a mis anchas, allí era posible perderse sin miedo, y conmoverse, sufrir, reír, pensar, soñar. Decidí que ése era mi lugar.

Mi interés por los personajes secundarios sin duda arranca de aquellas lecturas infantiles. Los protagonistas de aquellos relatos encontraban siempre, a lo largo de sus complicadas y peligrosas empresas, extraños aliados, apoyos inesperados y mágicos. Partían de circunstancias muy difíciles y se topaban con obstáculos que parecían insalvables, pero la intervención de estos personajes cambiaba el

curso de las cosas de forma radical y se alcanzaba el final feliz. Años después, atrapada en la aventura del héroe de Cervantes, yo buscaba en el libro esos elementos inesperados y mágicos, esos aliados que facilitaran su empresa. Por eso he dado el título de Aliados a mi discurso. Con él pretendo rendir un pequeño tributo a los personajes en quienes don Quijote, en su lucha por imponer sus ideales, encontró aliento, estímulo, comprensión, amistad, compañía o una clase de complicidad, fugaz o permanente, inmediata o simbólica.

De manera que don Quijote, a pesar de las adversidades, hace amigos y da y consigue apoyos. No todo son obstáculos.

Como en aquellos cuentos que me leyeron y leí durante mi infancia, el héroe encuentra aliados y prosigue su camino.

Tropieza y se levanta, reconstruye su sueño una y otra vez, no desespera. A pesar de su famosa declaración tras la desdichada aventura del barco encantado, “Yo no puedo más” (II, xxix, 954), don Quijote siempre puede dar unos pasos más.

El Quijote nos muestra el mundo del yo, de la voluntad personal, de los sueños personales. No es un cuento. Es el cuento, la novela de Cervantes. Nos ponemos a hablar de don Quijote, de Sancho, de Dulcinea, de Marcela, de Dorotea, del Caballero del Verde Gabán, del bandolero Roque Guinart, y acabamos hablando de Cervantes y de su empeño por conseguir la inmortalidad. Un tratado sobre la literatura que es, al mismo tiempo, un tratado sobre la vida. Esta es la obra de Cervantes. La literatura como metáfora de la vida. La locura como metáfora de la literatura.

ho is indisputably on the margin of this social order is Roque Guinart, the bandit with the big heart, with whom the knight gets on very well. He spends several days at his camp and he has long conversations with him.

Finally, don Quijote tries to convince him that he should give up his life as a bandit and embrace the cause of the knight errant. It seems more than mere chance that in this second part, when so many characters take up the baton to set themselves up as orchestrators of the game and to turn it into a joke, the idea passes through don Quijote’s head that first the poet don Lorenzo and a while later the bandit Roque Guinart, with whom he has had such good times of friendship, should accompany him in his adventures.

THE BANDIT ROQUE GUINART The good criminal

uien está indiscutiblemente al margen del orden social es Roque Guinart, el bandolero de buen corazón, con quien el caballero hace muy buenas migas. Pasa unos días en su campamento y mantiene con él largas conversaciones. Finalmente, don Quijote intenta convencerle de que abandone su vida de bandolero y abrace la causa de la caballería andante. No parece una casualidad que en esta segunda parte, cuando tantos personajes toman la batuta para erigirse en directores del juego y transformarlo en burla, a don Quijote se le pase por la cabeza la idea de que el poeta don Lorenzo, primero, y el bandolero Roque Guinart, algo después, con quienes ha pasado buenos ratos de amistad, le acompañen en sus aventuras. ¶The highwayman in Don Quixote distributes the booty he robs from the rich among the poor, just like Robin Hood.

DOROTEA The virtuous one

W

ith Dorotea comes conciliation.

She is amiable and self confident, a reader of books about knighthood and an excellent narrator, and has an extraordinary beauty and intelligence.

She fights to repair her honour and the reciprocity of her loved one, knows how to play when it is necessary and is always ready to offer a helping hand to those who find themselves in a fix. This young woman, so well equipped, had the weakness to fall in love with a man of higher social class than her own and, what is even more serious, succumbed. But she manages to find a happy ending by her own means, without the help of anyone else. Knowing how to express oneself is a fundamental part of Cervantes’ scale of values. That Dorotea should be the owner of this precious skill seems to be an unequivocal sign of the sympathy that the author feels for her. Everything that Dorotea says, she says very well.

Her tale, as happens with all that reaches the level of the most exact and convincing expression, sounds true. The “You won beautiful Dorotea, you won, because it is not possible to have the will to deny so many truths together” (I, xxxvi, 470) with which don Fernando recognizes his defeat receives universal acclaim. At the root of Dorotea’s misfortune is the fact she is a woman, as happened with Marcela. But in Dorotea’s case it is more emotional, because the one who succumbs is always more moving than the one who rejects.

n Dorotea se da la conciliación. Es amable y desenvuelta, lectora de libros de caballerías y una excelente narradora oral, está dotada de extraordinaria belleza e inteligencia, lucha por reparar su honra y conseguir la correspondencia de su amado, sabe jugar cuando es preciso y se muestra siempre dispuesta a echar una mano a quien se encuentra en apuros. Esta joven tan bien dotada tuvo la debilidad de enamorarse de un hombre de linaje social superior al suyo y, lo que es más grave aún, sucumbió. Pero consigue el final feliz por sus propios medios, sin la ayuda de nadie.

Saber expresarse es un asunto fundamental en la escala de valores cervantina. El que Dorotea sea dueña de este preciado don parece una señal inequívoca de la simpatía que el autor siente por ella. Todo lo que dice Dorotea lo dice muy bien, su relato, como ocurre con todo lo que alcanza la expresión más ajustada y convincente, suena a verdad. El “Venciste, hermosa Dorotea, venciste, porque no es posible tener ánimo para negar tantas verdades juntas” (I, xxxvi, 470) con que don Fernando reconoce su derrota recoge el aplauso general.

En la base de la desgracia de Dorotea está su condición femenina, como sucedía con Marcela. Pero el caso de Dorotea resulta más conmovedor, porque siempre conmueve más quien sucumbe que quien rechaza. ¶In reality she is a servant with a heart broken by love, but in the mind of Don Quixote she’s a princess.

THE POET DON LORENZO The learned one

T

he poet don Lorenzo, son of don Diego, is an even better person to speak to than his father. As a poet, don Lorenzo belongs to the lineage of the marginalized, even if - as don Quijote illustrates in detail, given that the matter interests him - there are poets who triumph and prosper socially. With clear irony, he advises don Lorenzo that if he wants to be successful he should follow the easy path of rhetoric. Knight and poet have such a good time chatting that don Quijote finds it difficult to say goodbye to him: “God knows if I should want to take Sir don Lorenzo with me, to teach him how subjects have to be pardoned, and to subdue and trample on the haughty, virtues attached to the profession that I profess; but, his young age doesn’t call for it, nor will his laudable practices consent. I can only content myself my advising your worship that, being a poet, you could be famous if you let yourself be guided more by outsiders’ opinions than by your own, because there is no father or mother to whom their children seem ugly, and with those that really are (ugly) the risk of deceit is even higher” (II, xix, 852), he declares.

l poeta don Lorenzo, hijo de don Diego, aún resulta mejor interlocutor que el padre. Como poeta, don Lorenzo pertenece a la estirpe de los marginados, si bien, como don Quijote ilustra con detalle, ya que el asunto le interesa, hay poetas que triunfan y medran socialmente, y, con manifiesta ironía, aconseja a don Lorenzo que, si desea el éxito, siga el fácil camino de la retórica. Caballero y poeta pasan tan buenos ratos de charla que a don Quijote le cuesta despedirse de él: “Sabe Dios si quisiera llevar conmigo al señor don Lorenzo, para enseñarle cómo se han de perdonar los sujetos, y supeditar y acocear los soberbios, virtudes anejas a la profesión que yo profeso; pero, pues no lo pide su poca edad, ni lo querrán consentir sus loables ejercicios, sólo me contento con advertirle a vuesa merced que, siendo poeta, podrá ser famoso si se guía más por el parecer ajeno que por el propio, porque no hay padre ni madre a quien sus hijos le parezcan feos, y en los que lo son del entendimiento corre más este engaño” (II, xix, 852), declara. ¶Don Lorenzo is a great fan of books about knights, and, although he is timid he likes to recite comments on the genre.

THE DAUGHTER OF THE INN KEEPER

The dreamer

he line that separates the dreams of the knight and the picaresque life that rules on the roads and in the inns is not very clear. The daughter of the innkeeper, who fits in well with her setting, is to be found in the middle of that invisible frontier. Her presence in the novel – intermittent and anonymous, yet discernible – helps give credence to this ambivalence. Not everyone fits the category of rogue, delinquent, or coward to perfection, and much less still that of a dreamer. Reality is extremely complex. A character can be innocent at one specific moment and malicious at another.

As happens in life, there are people who don’t feel pushed into a permanent definition or behave with complete coherence.

From the very moment of her appearance, the innkeeper’s daughter presents herself as a character half way between the dreams of the errant knights and the reality of the rogues.

Her “pleasing appearance” and her dreamy character distance her from Maritornes, whose description fits completely into the field of the grotesque, but the joke prevails over initial respect and sympathy, as the co-existence between rogues and dreamers is almost impossible. It seems to be no accident that Cervantes doesn’t give the young woman a name and that on some occasions he mentions her as being the daughter of the (male) innkeeper and on others, though fewer, as the daughter of a (female) innkeeper. He has put her into an intermediate space, a sort of limbo. She is neither sufficiently a dreamer nor roguish enough. She escapes definition, the author doesn’t know, doesn’t recall or doesn’t want to remember her name.

We find ourselves on ground where knightly ideals have mixed with the world of the roguish. That’s the territory of the novel.

a línea que separa los sueños del caballero de la vida picaresca que impera en caminos y ventas no es demasiado clara. La hija del ventero, que está muy de acuerdo con su entorno, se encuentra en medio de esa frontera invisible. Su presencia en la novela –intermitente y anónima, pero discernible- viene a dar fe de la ambivalencia: no todo el mundo encaja a la perfección en la categoría de pícaro, malhechor o cobarde, ni mucho menos en la del soñador. La realidad es sumamente compleja, un personaje puede ser inocente en determinado momento y malintencionado en otro.

Como sucede en la vida, hay personas que no se sienten empujadas a una definición constante ni a portarse con entera coherencia. Desde el mismo momento de su aparición, la hija del ventero se presenta como un personaje a medio camino entre los sueños de los caballeros andantes y la realidad de los pícaros. Su “buen parecer” y su carácter soñador la alejan de Maritornes, cuya descripción entra de lleno en el plano de lo grotesco, pero la burla se impone sobre el respeto o la simpatía iniciales, y es que la convivencia entre pícaros y soñadores es casi imposible. No parece casual que Cervantes no le de nombre a la joven y que incluso algunas veces la mencione como hija del ventero y otras, más escasas, como hija de la ventera. La ha situado en un espacio intermedio, una especie de limbo. No es lo suficientemente soñadora ni lo bastante pícara, se escapa a la definición, el autor no conoce, no recuerda o no quiere recordar su nombre. Nos encontramos en un territorio donde los ideales caballerescos se han mezclado con el mundo de los pícaros. Es el territorio de la novela. ¶The daughter of the inn keeper does not have a name, comes and goes, lives in a sort of dream all the way through the novel.

he knight of the green cloak, a model of Castilian nobility, is an excellent person for our hero to speak to. His virtues are so many that Sancho, believing him to be a saint, throws himself at his feet (II, xvi, 823). This prudent and discreet man lives apart from the rumble of the world around him. He has built himself an earthly paradise where calm and moderation reign. From this almost idyllic spot – without any palace intrigues, without the sense of superiority or the mind to trick –, don Diego admires the good opinion he has of don Quijote when it comes to important and far from simple matters, as is the case with the education of the children. Don Quijote, while talking with the knight of the green cloak, comes out with one of his most famous discourses, the one regarding the education of the children, and starts with these words: "Children, sir, are pieces of the entrails of their parents and as such they have to be loved, good or bad as they may be, as are loved the souls that give us life [...]".

THE KNIGHT OF THE GREEN CLOAK The nobleman

l Caballero del Verde Gabán, modelo de hidalgo castellano, es un excelente interlocutor para nuestro héroe. Sus virtudes son tantas que Sancho, creyéndole santo, se echa a sus pies (II, xvi, 823). Este varón prudente y discreto vive alejado de los ruidos del mundo, se ha construido un paraíso terrenal donde reinan el sosiego y la mesura.

Desde este lugar casi idílico -sin intrigas palaciegas, sin espíritu de superioridad ni ánimo de burla-, don Diego admira el buen juicio que tiene de don Quijote cuando trata de asuntos de importancia y nada sencillos, como es el caso de la educación de los hijos. Don Quijote, en conversación con el Caballero del Verde Gabán, pronuncia uno de sus discursos más famosos, el relativo a la educación de los hijos y que se inicia con estas palabras: "Los hijos, señor, son pedazos de las entrañas de los padres y así se han de querer, buenos o malos que sean, como se quieren las almas que nos dan vida [...]".

MARCELA The rebel woman

arcela bursts into the knightly universe in the first part and leaves an indelible mark.

What surprises those who listen to her, don Quijote included, and readers through the ages, is her firm declaration of liberty.

Marcela, who has a reputation for being cruel and ungrateful, begins her argument with impeccable reasoning: “I was made in heaven, according to what you say, beautiful, and in such a way that, without being powerful in other ways, you love me, you are moved by my beauty, and for the love that you show me you say and even want that I should be obliged to love you [...] I cannot understand why, for the reason of being loved, the one who is loved should be obliged, for being beautiful, to love the one who loves her” (I, xiiii, 167). Towards the middle of her speech she makes the fundamental declaration: “I was born free, and to be able to live free I chose the solitude of the fields” (I, xiiii, 168). Marcela is intimately related to don Quijote. She has nothing to do with his fellow men. Her nature doesn’t fit in with social order. If she wants to preserve her liberty, she has no other option than to be alone. The idea that comes out of Marcela, liberty as an innate quality of the human being, has a lot to do with don Quijote’s decision to live by the rules of the knight errant.

The incisiveness of her declaration -”I was born free”- and the extraordinary coherence that exists between her ideas and her way of living turn Marcela into an implicit ally of the knight. Both she and don Quijote propose to live in accordance with their own codes.

Lo que sorprende a quienes la escuchan, don Quijote incluido, y a los lectores de todos los tiempos, es su firme declaración de libertad. Marcela, a quien precede la fama de cruel e ingrata, inicia su discurso con un razonamiento impecable: “Hízome el cielo, según vosotros decís, hermosa, y de tal manera que, sin ser poderosos a otra cosa, a que me améis os mueve mi hermosura, y por el amor que me mostráis decís y aún queréis que esté obligada a amaros [...] mas no alcanzo que, por razón de ser amado, esté obligado lo que es amado por hermoso a amar a quien le ama” (I, xiiii, 167). Hacia la mitad del discurso, hace la declaración fundamental: “Yo nací libre, y para poder vivir libre escogí la soledad de los campos” (I, xiiii, 168).

Marcela está íntimamente emparentada con don Quijote. No tiene nada que ver con sus semejantes. Su naturaleza no encaja en la organización social. Si quiere preservar su libertad, no tiene otra opción que la soledad.

La idea de la que parte Marcela, la libertad como cualidad innata del ser humano, tiene mucho que ver con la decisión de don Quijote de vivir según las reglas de la andante caballería. Lo tajante de su declaración -”nací libre”- y la extraordinaria coherencia que existe entre sus ideas y su forma de vida convierten a Marcela en una aliada implícita del caballero. Tanto ella como don Quijote se proponen vivir de acuerdo con sus propios códigos. ¶Marcela lived imprisoned by society, and found her freedom by escaping the worldly bustle for the countryside.

I t’s a football night in the capital of Catalonia. Not that one senses the ambience.

A home game in the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) on a Wednesday, and the comfortable routine of victories for the leading club in the city, F.C. Barcelona, doesn’t help feed the passion. But for Luis Bassat (born Barcelona, 1941), it’s still a football night. Many people know him precisely for having twice been a candidate for the presidency of the claret and blue club or, perhaps more, for having failed on both occasions. Others, however, know him as the leading Spanish advertising man of the 20th centur y. That’s advertising, a world of invisible people who dictate the way you drink, dress and drive, but who you

never get to know. The genius who transformed an agency of three employees into a benchmark of the international elite of creativity is not a celebrity.

The mastermind behind the ceremonies of Barcelona ’92, one of the best Olympic openings in histor y, the man who has been awarded more than 400 prizes for his advertising work, receives us today on one of the several floors occupied by his agency, Bassat Ogilv y.

Nobody would imagine that within this slight, suited man can be found one of the sharpest brains in the art of selling.

Several works of art from his collection, an old sandwich board man, a portrait of David Ogilv y and a vintage cash register, a personal present from Ogilv y himself, complete the attrezzo. “They gave each agency a cash register to remind us about what was important for the client, that the cash register keeps ringing”, his personal assistant, Montse, tells me.

Having spent more than 20 years in the small great Bassat family, she sits at an Olympus VN-3100PC, probably bought following the impact of a good advertising campaign, waiting for it to boot up.

Luis Bassat got involved in advertising because of a motorbike. His father didn’t want to buy him one, so he decided he would have to arrange things himself. He started selling televisions in the Ensanche district of Barcelona because the company that took him on, Marconi, was the only one that accepted employees who had not finished their national service.

After a year of door to door selling, it was clear that convincing people was his forte.

He set up an agency, Venditor, -which would later lead to Bassat y Asociados-, from where he would begin making a name in advertising. “When I started to do advertising my friends told me: ‘But how have you got yourself into this profession of liars, of people who cheat the consumer?’"

Un partido doméstico de copa del Rey en pleno miércoles y la cómoda rutina de victorias del club mayoritario de la ciudad, el F.C. Barcelona, no ayudan a alimentar el furor. Pero para Luis Bassat (Barcelona, 1941), sigue siendo una tarde de fútbol. Muchos le conocen precisamente por haber sido dos veces candidato a la presidencia del club blaugrana o, más bien, por haber fracasado en ambas ocasiones. Otros, sin embargo, le conocen por ser el mejor publicitario español del siglo XX. Así es la publicidad, un mundo de hombres invisibles que dictan las pautas de lo que bebes, vistes, o conduces, pero a los que jamás conocerás. El genio que transformó una agencia de tres empleados en una referencia de la élite internacional de la creatividad no es una celebrity; el cerebro de las ceremonias de Barcelona ’92, una de las mejores aperturas olímpicas de la historia, el mismo que ha sido galardonado con más de 400 premios por su labor publicitaria, nos recibe hoy en una de las varias plantas que ocupa su agencia, Bassat&Ogilvy, y nadie se imaginaría que bajo ese menudo hombre trajeado se encuentra una de las mentes más brillantes del arte de vender. Varias obras de arte de su colección, un viejo hombreanuncio, un retrato de David

Ogilvy y una caja registradora vintage, regalo personal del propio Ogilvy, completan el atrezzo. “Nos regalaba una caja registradora a cada agencia para recordarnos que eso era lo importante para el cliente, que su caja registradora sonase”, me chiva Montse, su asistente personal, que lleva más de dos décadas en la pequeña gran familia Bassat, antes de que una Olympus VN-3100PC, comprada probablemente tras el impacto de una buena campaña publicitaria, se ponga en funcionamiento.

Luis Bassat se metió en publicidad por culpa de una moto. Su padre no quería comprársela y decidió que tendría que arreglárselas sólo.

Empezó vendiendo televisores en el Ensanche de Barcelona porque la marca que le contrató, Marconi, era la única que aceptaba tener empleados sin el servicio militar cumplido. Tras un año de puerta en puerta, era obvio que lo de convencer era lo suyo, y creó una agencia, Venditor, -posteriormente, desembocaría en Bassat y Asociados-, desde la que acabaría marcando una época en la publicidad. “Cuando empecé a hacer publicidad mis amigos me decían: ‘¿Pero cómo te metes a esa profesión de mentirosos, de gente que engaña al consumidor?’"

A nd I wanted to show them with my attitude and my way of doing things that it was not a profession of bad people, but one of people who are creative, interesting, very cultured, very concerned about what is happening in the world… And at that time I made a promise to myself to never lie. I said: ‘I am not going to tell a lie whatever it costs me, neither to my clients, nor the consumers. On one occasion I arrived late for an appointment and the client made excuses for me in front of his directors. He told them the traffic was very bad. I told them that it was not so, that I had left late. And he told them: ‘See? That’s exactly what I like about Bassat’”. Yes, but in advertising, a little lie doesn’t hurt anybody… “A lie is not the same as a bit of poetic license. My grandson tells me ‘I love you to bits’ and I tell him ‘And I love you even more.’ Neither of us has told a lie. This is an emotional thing, something quite different from when you give out information about a product”. This man convinces. It’s because of his attitude: an impermeable aura of security surrounds him.

Anyone would say that he’s capable of selling sand in the desert. He stops the interview to call for a Coca Cola Zero instead of the glass of water that has been brought us, and asks if I too would like one. “No, thanks”. Minutes later the damned spark of life bubbles in his glass and makes me regret my decision. The portrait of Ogilvy looks at me very seriously from the wall, in the pose of a British lord (two fingers on the face and the other hand holding on to his arm). For a moment I feel the sensation that he is judging me. Bassat talks of Him, as if he were a god. “He is my master. I have him here as if it were a photo of my father. I have him

here because I had a great affection for him. He always treated me like a son.”

The Englishman, a pioneer of modern advertising and one of the kings of Madison Avenue (as he is called in his biography, which moreover has a prologue written by Bassat), was so impressed by the work of the agency and the personality of the Catalan that he had no doubts in becoming his partner in Spain, in a relationship that would unite them until his death.

Ogilvy was one of the creators of the legend about the old school of New York ad men that Mathew Weiner managed to distill -drop by drop of Scotch whisky- in the acclaimed series Mad Men. The image that Weiner brings out about the ins and outs of Madison Avenue has contributed to feeding the legend of the advertising men. Bassat himself rubbed shoulders with the men from Madison Avenue in his golden years. His face portrays a mixture of nostalgia and roguishness on recalling those years. “Man, with Mad Men suddenly we are all seen, advertising people, like those gentlemen on the telly. I watched the first episode and didn’t want to see any more. My wife asked me with surprise, why, as it was about my profession. ‘Because all we are seeing, Carmen, is the truth’. I was working in New York at that time, on Madison Avenue, and that’s the way it was.

One day the financial director of our company invited me out to eat at a restaurant opposite our office. That is pure Mad Men” – and his eyes open up like saucers. With the legendary image of Donald Draper in my mind I take the bait. “Let’s go to a restaurant, a very nice place. He says: ‘I could have a whisky sour. ‘Well, me too’. We chat, chat…and he says: ‘I could have another whisky sour’ ‘Well… well me too’. After two whisky sour, in the end he says to me: ‘You don’t want anything else, right?’ He paid and we left.

“That gentleman drank two whisky sour!”. And he burst out laughing.

You can see he misses the old times. What is there then in that image of smokers, alcoholics and womanizers described in the series?

“At one time that image was true, today not any more. Today in advertising there are very serious people, very trustworthy… You can keep going until two in the morning if the idea doesn’t come, and you don’t say ‘This is what I’m going to present to the

client and that’s that’. No” – he bangs the table twice with force. “I’m not leaving here until I am sure that this is the great idea”. The great idea, that white blackbird, that phantom that many have caressed with their fingers yet few have managed to touch, the Holy Grail of any good advertising man. And Bassat is obsessed with it. One of his most famous sayings is stamped on the wall that clients see -inevitably- on leaving the conference room: ‘The Great Idea, as difficult to find as it is easy to reject’. “The phrase on the wall is there because maybe they have thrown out one of your ideas, and at least they get to this phrase and say: ‘Christ, I’ve just buggered it up in a moment’- he jokes.

“The great idea is very difficult to achieve. David Ogilvy himself said that he had two great ideas in his life. But the great idea, the one that turns the market right round, is difficult. I think I’ve had relatively few in my life”. This hyperactive globetrotter has had his dreams answered because he loves his work. Luis Bassat is addicted to advertising. “This profession really gets you hooked. Let’s say it has a lot of sex appeal, no?” He has managed to place his agency in the international shop window because he followed to the letter a doctrine with three simple commandments: sell, sell and sell. “A good piece of advertising is not the one that wins a great prize, that you talk about all the time yet you never buy the product. The best advertisement is the one that on seeing it you go to the shop and say ‘I want this product’. What the advertisement has to do is sell it to you, in a new, creative, intelligent way… but it has to sell it to you, and if it doesn’t sell it to you, I am very sorry, it is not good advertising. ” Bassat sells himself; but not in the way a quack doctor would with a miracle cure. He does it as a spiritual leader who tells you that you should buy an umbrella because there’s a downpour coming. It’s understandable why so many people have put their future profits in his hands.

“What an advertising person has to achieve is that the client sees him as his doctor. Like a person who is going to care for him, who is going to look after his brand, his products, who will advise him if something starts to go wrong, who does something more every year to improve his health.”

You know why?

Because all we are seeing is the truth.'

Y o les quise demostrar con mi actitud y con mi manera de hacer que no era una profesión de mala gente, sino una profesión de gente creativa, interesante, muy culta, muy preocupada por lo que está pasando en el mundo… Y en aquella ocasión, me prometí a mí mismo no mentir jamás. Dije: ‘Yo no voy a decir una mentira cueste lo que me cueste’. Ni a mi cliente ni a los consumidores. En una ocasión yo llegaba tarde a una cita. Llegué tarde y el cliente me excusó delante de sus directivos. Les dijo que el tráfico estaba muy mal y yo les dije que no, que había salido tarde. Y les dijo, ‘¿ves? Eso es justo lo que me gusta de Bassat’”. Sí, pero en publicidad, una mentirijilla no hace daño a nadie…

“No es lo mismo una mentira que una afirmación poética. Mi nieto me dice ‘Te quiero hasta el cielo’ y yo le digo ‘Pues yo más’, y ninguno ha dicho una mentira. Esto es una cosa emocional, algo muy distinto a cuando das datos de un producto”. Este hombre convence. Es por su actitud: un impermeable aura de seguridad le acompaña. Cualquiera diría que sería capaz de vender arena en el desierto.

Detiene la entrevista para pedir una Coca cola Zero en lugar del vaso de agua que nos han traído, y pregunta si también quiero una. “No, gracias”.

Minutos después, la maldita chispa de la vida salta en su vaso y hace que me arrepienta. El retrato de Ogilvy me mira muy serio desde la pared, con pose de lord británico (dos dedos sobre la cara y la otra mano sujetando el brazo), y por un momento da la sensación de que me está juzgando.

Bassat habla de Él como si fuera un Dios. “Es mi maestro. Le tengo aquí como si fuera la foto de mi padre. Le tengo porque le tuve un gran cariño,

me trató como un hijo, siempre”. El inglés, pionero de la publicidad moderna y uno de los “Reyes de Madison Avenue” (como se llama su biografía, que además prologa el propio Bassat), quedó impresionado por la labor de la agencia y la personalidad del catalán, y no dudó en convertirse en su socio en España, en una relación que les uniría hasta su muerte.

Ogilvy fue uno de los creadores del mito de la vieja escuela de publicitarios neoyorquinos, que Matthew Weiner ha sabido destilar –gota a gota, de whisky escocés- en la aplaudida serie Mad Men. La imagen que aporta Weiner sobre los entresijos de la avenida Madison ha contribuido a alimentar el mito de los hombres anuncio. El propio Bassat se codeó con los hombres de la avenida Madison en su época dorada, y en su cara se dibuja una mezcla de añoranza y picardía al recordar aquellos años. “Hombre, con Mad Men de repente todos somos vistos, los publicitarios, como esos señores de la tele. Yo vi el primer capítulo y no quise ver ninguno más.

Mi mujer me preguntó extrañada por qué, tratándose de mi profesión. ‘Porque todo lo que estamos viendo, Carmen, es verdad’. Yo he trabajado en Nueva York en esa época, en Madison Avenue, y era así. Un día me invitó el director financiero de nuestra compañía a comer a un restaurante frente al despacho. Esto es puro Mad Men –y abre los ojos como platos;con la mitificada imagen de Donald Draper en mente, muerdo el anzuelo. “Vamos al restaurante, un sitio muy bonito. Él dice: ‘Yo me tomaría un whiskey sour’. ‘Pues yo también’. Charlamos, charlamos… y él dice: ‘Yo me tomaría otro whiskey sour’ ‘Bueno… pues yo también’. Después de dos whiskey sour al final me dice ‘No quieres nada más ¿verdad?’ Pagó y nos fuimos. ¡Este señor comía dos whiskey sour!”.

Y estalla en carcajadas.

Se nota que echa de menos los viejos tiempos. ¿Qué hay entonces de esa imagen de fumadores, alcohólicos y mujeriegos que describe la serie? “Esta imagen en una época fue verdad, hoy ya no. Hoy en la publicidad hay gente tremendamente seria, tremendamente cumplidora…

Uno se pasa hasta las 2 de la mañana si no le sale la idea y no dice ‘Ésta se la presento al cliente y ya está’.

No -da dos enérgicos golpes en la mesa-. No me voy de aquí hasta que

no esté seguro de que ésta es la gran idea”. La gran idea. Ese mirlo blanco, ese fantasma que muchos han acariciado con los dedos y pocos han llegado a tocar, el grial de cualquier buen publicitario. Y Bassat está obsesionado con ella. Una de sus más célebres frases está estampada en la pared que los clientes se encuentran –inevitablemente- al salir de la sala de reuniones: ‘La Gran Idea, tan difícil encontrarla como fácil despreciarla’. “La frase en la pared es porque a lo mejor se te han cargado una idea y al menos leen esta frase y dicen: ‘ostras, la acabo de cagar en un minuto’-bromea. La gran idea es muy difícil de conseguir. El propio David Ogilvy decía que él grandes ideas había tenido dos en su vida. Pero la gran idea, lo que le da la vuelta total al mercado es difícil. Creo que he tenido relativamente pocas en mi vida”.

Este hiperactivo trotamundos ha cumplido sus sueños porque ama su trabajo. Luis Bassat es adicto a la publicidad. “Esta profesión engancha mucho. Tiene un sex appeal, digamos, muy grande ¿no?” Ha logrado situar a su agencia en el escaparate internacional porque siguió al pie de la letra una doctrina con tres simples mandamientos: vender, vender y vender. “La buena publicidad no es la que gana el grand prix y hablas toda la vida de ese anuncio pero jamás compras el producto. El mejor anuncio es aquel que al acabar de verlo te vas a la tienda y dices ‘quiero este producto’. Lo que tiene que hacer el anuncio es vendértelo, de una manera nueva, creativa, inteligente… pero te lo ha de vender, y si no te lo vende, lo siento mucho, no es buena publicidad”.

Bassat se vende a sí mismo; pero no cómo lo haría un charlatán de feria con un elixir milagroso, sino como un líder espiritual que te dice que te compres paraguas porque se acerca el diluvio. Es normal que tantas empresas hayan puesto el futuro de sus beneficios en sus manos. “Lo que un publicitario tiene que conseguir es que su cliente lo perciba como su médico. Como una persona que va a cuidarlo, que va a cuidar su marca, sus productos, que le va a avisar si algo empieza a ir mal, que todos los años le hace algo más para que su salud mejore”.

'Hombre, con Mad Men de repente todos somos vistos, los publicitarios, como esos señores de la tele. Yo vi el primer capítulo y no quise ver ninguno más. ¿Sabes por qué? Porque todo lo que estamos viendo es verdad'.

A part from his recent autobiography, Confesiones (personales) de un publicitario, (Personal confessions of an advertising man) he has written two other books, El libro Rojo de la Publicidad (The Red Book of Advertising) and El Libro de las Marcas (The Book of Brands), that those who aspire to be great account executives and eager copywriters guard in their libraries as treasures. Having in front of me the guru who wrote these manuals, an update on the contents wouldn’t go amiss. And what next? “Without any doubt, the brand name continues to be very important, but once again the consumer wants to know about the product. The consumer has always been king. Several years ago the style of communications changed in a radical way. I can remember when advertising was rational. You gave the product an edge and that made you different.

When all the products become the same, when the research and the technical teams of the companies manage to make all detergents with yellow, blue and white powders… When more or less the whole world ended up making the same type of product and there was nothing new to say, that was when emotional advertising started.

Now they spoke not so much about the product as the consumers of the product, of the life style of the consumers”. Are we therefore coming to the end of emotional advertising? Don’t tell me that the likes of ‘Connect-

ing people’ and ‘Just do it’ are finished… “No. What is happening is that emotional advertising, instead of evolving and becoming ever more emotional, has found a new media, the Internet, where what people are looking for, once again, is information. Luis Bassat always has an idea. At present he is a member of more than 20 boards and honorary president of the agency that bears his name (among another unending list of jobs). But, fortunately for his family and the ill luck of his partners, not for much longer. “Now I am at the stage of life for giving up things. I hope to have another eight years in front of me, and I’ve planned my life to do the things that I still have to do in these eight years. That’s that.

And without any fear. Life expectancy in Spain is 78 for a man.

That means I’ve got eight years left. At my age you have to start thinking about it, not be so naïve that suddenly you say: ‘Fuck, I’ve died and I didn’t do all I wanted to do.’” We don’t know what Bassat has written on his to do list for those eight years. I guess he will dedicate himself to his family and his recently founded (Contemporary Art) Museum in Mataró, sports that are less absorbing than the frenetic business of advertising but surely equally satisfying.

For the moment they remind him that, if the photo session doesn’t get going, he may not get to see his game. It seems to have an effect. He leaves as he arrived, with the attitude that everything is going to turn out fine, whatever happens. If this man tried to sell you shares in Lehman Brothers, you’d buy them. Truly. For the record, his team won: five goals to nil.

A demás de su reciente autobiografía, Confesiones (personales) de un publicitario, ha escrito dos libros, El libro Rojo de la Publicidad y El Libro de las Marcas, que los aspirantes a grandes ejecutivos de cuentas y ávidos creativos guardan en sus librerías como tesoros. Teniendo delante al gurú que escribió estos manuales, una actualización de contenidos nunca viene mal. Y ahora, ¿qué? “Ahora sigue siendo muy importante la marca, sin duda alguna, pero el consumidor otra vez quiere saber del producto.

El consumidor siempre ha sido el rey. Desde hace algunos años el estilo de la comunicación ha cambiado de forma radical. Recuerdo cuando la publicidad era racional. Tú dabas una ventaja del producto y eso te hacía diferente. Cuando todos los productos se igualaron, cuando la investigación y las direcciones técnicas de las empresas consiguieron todas el detergente con polvos amarillos, azules y blancos… Cuando más o menos todo el mundo acabó haciendo el mismo tipo de producto y no había nada diferente que decir, entonces empezó la publicidad emocional. Y ya no se hablaba tanto del producto como de los consumidores del producto, del estilo de vida de los consumidores”. ¿Estamos entonces ante el fin de la publicidad emocional?

No me diga que se acabó eso de ‘Connecting people’ o ‘Just Do it’… “No. Lo que sucede es que la publicidad emocional en vez

de evolucionar y ser cada vez más emocional se ha encontrado con un nuevo medio, Internet, donde la gente lo que busca, otra vez, es información. Ya no entras a Internet para que te convenzan, entras en Internet para saber más cosas de algo. De una televisión, de un ordenador, de una película determinada…

Y el consumidor es el que decide antes de ir a la tienda lo que quiere. Antes el consumidor iba a la tienda y al final se acababa dejando convencer por el vendedor. Ahora el consumidor va a la tienda y muchas veces sabe más que el vendedor de aquello que va a comprar”.

Luis Bassat siempre tiene una idea. Es miembro en la actualidad de más de una veintena de consejos y presidente de honor de la agencia que lleva su nombre (entre otra infinita lista de ocupaciones), pero para suerte de su familia y desgracia de sus socios, no por mucho tiempo. “Ahora estoy en el proceso de mi vida de dejar cosas. Espero tener ocho años por delante, y me he planificado mi vida para hacer las cosas que me quedan por hacer en estos ocho años.

Ya está. Y sin ningún miedo. La expectativa de vida en España son 78 años para un hombre.

Eso quiere decir que me quedan ocho años. A mi edad hay que empezarlo a pensar. No ser tan ingenuo que de repente dices: ‘Coño, me he muerto y no he hecho todo lo que quería hacer’”. No sabemos lo que Bassat ha escrito en su lista de cosas pendientes para estos ocho años. Supongo que dedicarse a su familia y a su recién nacido Museo en Mataró, deportes menos absorbentes que el frenético negocio de la propaganda pero seguro que igual de satisfactorios. Por ahora le recuerdan que, si no comienza la sesión de fotos, a lo mejor no llega a ver su partido. Parece que surte efecto.

Se marcha como ha venido, con la actitud de que todo va a salir bien, pase lo que pase. Si este señor te vendiera acciones en Lehman Brothers, las comprarías.

De verdad. Por cierto, su equipo ganó. Cinco a cero.

Fifty years after it started, the same time period as covered by the story of Tolstoy, ETA is in a corner, but nobody has yet been able to say the word peace.

Country. All that for nothing. Shortly afterwards he learnt that the terrorist organization had taken advantage of the truce to re-arm, and the deal was off.

n television, leaning back in his seat, a Mont Blanc pen in one hand and the other placidly supported on the table, European Member of Parliament for the Partido Popular (the Popular Party - PP) Jaime Mayor Oreja has for years now been the image of the fight calling for the surrender of ETA. His has been the voice for those who claim that the Basque terrorist group always plays tricks when it announces a ceasefire. Those who know this man in his 60s, with his white beard and nerves of steel, acknowledge that whatever disagreement there may be over his interpretation of the latest truce proclaimed by the armed group, he is always fully briefed, and not just because he has lived face to face with each and every one of the most dramatic contemporary chapters. His work in heading up the Ministry of the Interior during the first government of José María Aznar is almost legendary: “To think that ETA on it’s own has managed to bring together the support of Nobel Peace Prize winners to open negotiations is absurd. That can only be achieved with the support of a government.

And that can only be done after making a pact with the Socialists”, he said during the television interview, before speaking about the effect of linguistic illusions that, in his opinion, the izquierda abertzale (the traditional left wing nationalists in the Basque Country) use when they speak of peace.

And once again, Mayor Oreja has to be applauded at least for persevering in his argument. He was the one directly responsible for the penultimate negotiations with ETA, and it was through him that Aznar’s government made small concessions to the organization, such as the transfer of prisoners spread around peninsular Spain to jails close to the Basque

A NEW CEASEFIRE Today everything is against ETA. Its intentions, demonstrated in its last communiqué, are at the moment a compendium of old arguments for a country burdened with the frustration of four failed attempts to achieve peace. “The Basque revolutionary socialist organization for national liberty has decided to declare a permanent ceasefire, a general one and verifiable through the international community. ETA wants to pass on to the authorities in Spain and France its firm commitment with a process to finding a definitive solution that must resolve the key issues of territorial rights and self determination, at the heart of the political conflict", states their note.

The first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, de-

scribed the communiqué as “arrogant,” and added that ETA "wants to maintain its position of protecting guarantor of any negotiations.

They should know that the clock cannot be turned back". And the recent past in the Basque region is so dramatic that it seems to have no end.

It’s enough to stroll through the streets of the Vizcaya province town of Ondárroa, where support for Basque independence is obvious, to get an idea of the political abyss over which the Basque region swings.

Some 70% of the social support for ETA comes from the rural areas of the Basque Country, and many of these areas are bastions of a left wing abertzale that in some way is broken. ETA continues to find most of its support in the rural Basque world. In districts such as Goiherri, in the province of Guipuzcoa, in Ondárroa, and in the Basque speaking area of the Navarra region, the left wing abertzale party has always been the party that won the most votes. It was in the seaside town

of Goiherri that the last enormous bomb was planted. Although there were no victims, it almost destroyed a barracks block of the autonomous police force with all its officers inside. The abertzale base remains convinced that there is only one way to find a solution to this old conflict, one that has already lasted 51 years, ever since a group of young nationalist university students decided the Franco regime should be fought with arms in their hands and founded ETA. They want a round table to arbitrate over the merger of the Basque Autonomous Community and that of Navarra into one single administration, with the rights to decide whether to belong to Spain or to become independent. “There is nothing to negotiate with ETA. We are just waiting for a communiqué in which it announces that it renounces the use of arms. While there is no distancing from violence, Batasuna (ETA’s political wing) will not be allowed to take part in any elections”, stressed Rubalcaba at the end of his public appearance.

Abertzale leader Arnaldo Otegi was released from prison on 30 August 2008 after serving a 15 month sentence for the crime of extolling terrorism.

In October 2009 he returned to jail, where he still remains.

Su labor al frente del Ministerio del Interior durante el primer Gobierno de José María Aznar es casi legendario: “Pensar que ETA en solitario ha logrado reunir el apoyo de Premios Nobel de la Paz para abrir una negociación es absurdo. Eso sólo se consigue con el respaldo de un Gobierno.

Y eso sólo se hace tras llegar a un pacto con los socialistas”, advierte durante la entrevista televisiva antes de hablar sobre el efecto de los espejismos lingüísticos que, en su opinión, utiliza el entramado abertzale para hablar de paz.

Y una vez más, a Mayor Oreja habría que alabarle, al menos, por perseverar en su discurso. Él fue el responsable directo de la penúltima negociación con ETA y bajo su responsabilidad el Gobierno de Aznar realizó pequeños guiños a la banda, como el acercamiento de presos dispersos por la península a cárceles

cercanas al País Vasco. Todo ello para nada. Poco tiempo después se supo que la organización terrorista aprovechó la paz para rearmarse y se rompió la baraja.

UN NUEVO ALTO EL FUEGO Hoy todo corre contra ETA. Las intenciones que muestra en su último comunicado son, de momento, un compendio de viejos discursos para un país lastrado por la frustración de cuatro intentos fallidos por alcanzar la paz. “La organización socialista revolucionaria vasca de liberación nacional ha decidido declarar un alto el fuego permanente, general y verificable por la comunidad internacional. ETA quiere trasladar a las autoridades de España y Francia su firme compromiso con un proceso de solución definitivo que debe resolver las claves de la territorialidad y el derecho de autodeterminación, el núcleo del conflicto político", reza la nota.

Gobierno y Ministro del Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, calificó este comunicado de “arrogante” y añadió que ETA "quiere mantener su posición de tutela garante de una supuesta negociación.

Que sepan que el pasado nunca vuelve". Y el pasado reciente en Euskadi es tan dramático que parece no tener fin.

Basta con recorrer las calles del municipio vizcaíno de Ondárroa, donde el apoyo al independentismo vasco es palpable, para hacerse una idea del abismo político en el que se columpia Euskadi. El 70% del apoyo social a ETA emerge en la vida rural del País Vasco y Navarra, bastiones muchos de ellos de una izquierda abertzale que en modo alguno está resquebrajada. ETA sigue encontrando en el mundo rural vasco su apoyo social mayoritario.

En comarcas como el Goiherri guipuzcoano, en Ondárroa y en la zona vascófona de Navarra, el partido izquierda abertzale siempre fue el partido más votado. En

este municipio costero colocaron la última bomba descomunal que, aunque no causó víctimas, casi destruye un cuartel de la policía autonómica con todos los agentes dentro. La base abertzale sigue convencida de que la única manera de solucionar este viejo conflicto, que ya dura 51 años -cuando un grupo de jóvenes universitarios nacionalistas decidieron que al franquismo debía de combatirse con las armas en la mano y fundaron ETA- es en una mesa que arbitre la fusión de la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca y Navarra en una administración única y con el derecho a decidir entre su pertenencia a España o la independencia. “No hay nada que negociar con ETA. Sólo esperamos un comunicado en el que anuncie su renuncia a las armas.

Mientras no haya un desmarque de la violencia, Batasuna (su brazo político) no estará presente en unas elecciones”, recalcó Rubalcaba al concluir su comparecencia pública.

declaration on the part of ETA which should be followed by the Spanish Government’s acceptance of an independent international commission to supervise the truce, with the aim of creating the climate of confidence necessary to begin new talks.

Although the international declaration does not make any specific demand on the Spanish government beyond replying to the truce, Currin has said that in his opinion the measures that should be adopted should include the legalization of Batasuna, moving ETA prisoners closer to the Basque Country, and a relaxation of the legislation on security.

The Partido Popular believes that this declaration has the backing of Zapatero’s government, although Rubalcaba swears blind that Spain will never accept outside mediation because “the only ones qualified to verify anything are the State’s security forces”.

ETA commits its first mortal attack since the breakdown of the previous truce, which lasted 439 days; on 21 November it assassinated the former Socialist minister Ernest Lluch. In December, the Partido Popular (PP) and Socialist (PSOE) parties sign the Pact for liberty and against terrorism.

ETA breaks the ceasefire with a car bomb attack at Barajas airport, Madrid.

It’s the first mortal attack since the ceasefire, although the organization does not make an official announcement of the end of the truce until June 2007.

THE POLITICAL PATH Despite this support today for the network that backs the organization, there is no other choice for them but to accept the democratic rules of the game. The fight against terrorism launched by the last government of Aznar – and seconded by all the parties represented in parliament with the exception of the Basques – forced Batasuna into a dead-end street. The main objective was to intensify police control, harden habeas corpus for those arrested, to treat as terrorists violent street activists, and above all to institutionally ban any candidate who did not come straight to the point and condemn violence by ETA. The tactic has worked to perfection.

The abertzale has been suffocated, in the political context and financially. “It’s no mystery. Even they don’t try to hide it. But it won’t be sufficient to finish for ETA, because this organization does not sustain itself with the money it collects as do the drug trafficking mafias. It has a very high level of popular support, which is why the State will have no other option than to sit down at a negotiating table and make some political concessions,” says an old militant from the now extinct ETA PolíticoMilitar (EPM), a breakaway group that pushed for political solutions more than two decades ago. Up to now, none of the official research studies carried out by Euskobarómetro on whether the region’s citizens want to see Batasuna allowed to take part in any elections has dropped below 65% and almost 45% see nothing wrong with the possibility of a legal and political change for the Basque region vis a vis Spain.

He’s not afraid, but he is cautious. He insists that the long internal debate begun by the izquierda abertzale in 2004 about the effects of the armed struggle has concluded, in his opinion, “with the imposition of the practice of the political wing over the testosterone of the armed wing”.

But the experiment that began then, following a speech in San Sebastián by the currently jailed leader of the abertzale, Arnaldo Otegi, has not been a simple mathematical equation. "They assumed that the political questions can only be settled with a political battle", explains the former EPM leader: a reality check for a world reluctant to step out of the shadows.

At the end of the day, the most reactionary must think that demanding at gunpoint something as controversial as the union of Navarra and the Basque region, with a shared culture, the same language, and similar history, has too high a price.

And if one scratches a little at this opaque world, the smell it gives off in the street is one of a commanding need to return to the institutions and to give echo to the voice of a political machine with 150,000 followers anxious to find their place in the sun. Even within the illegal organization itself they recognize that the latest moves to draw closer have already begun. But they have also advised their grass roots support to be prepared for a slow process "that will start to move when the government accepts international mediation", say sources within Batasuna.

The pillars on which hope is founded are described in the Declaration of Brussels, a document signed on 29 March last year by four Nobel Peace Prize winners – the ex president of South Africa, Frederik de Klerk; South African archbishop Desmond Tutu; the former leader of the Northern Ireland Social Democratic and Labour Party, John Hume; and the ex president of the Republic of Ireland, Mary Robinson – and also by the prestigious Nelson Mandela Foundation. The driving force behind this initiative is Brian Currin, a South African lawyer who has struggled with peace processes even more complex than the Basque one, as were those of his own country and of Northern Ireland. LA VIA POLITICA Pese a este respaldo hoy al entramado que apoya a la banda no le queda otra vía que aceptar las reglas democráticas del juego. La lucha antiterrorista promovida por

el último Gobierno de Aznar -y secundada por todos los partidos con representación parlamentaria a excepción de los vascos- metió a Batasuna en un callejón sin salida.

El objetivo principal era intensificar el control policial, endurecer el habeas corpus con los detenidos, tratar como terroristas a los violentos activistas callejeros y sobre todo inhabilitar institucionalmente a cualquier candidato que no condene sin ambages la violencia etarra. Y la táctica está resultando gloriosa. La izquierda abertzale está asfixiada.

En lo político y en lo económico.

“No es ningún misterio. Ni siquiera ellos lo esconden. Pero no será suficiente para acabar con ETA porque esta organización no se sustenta en el dinero recaudado como hacen las mafias de narcotraficantes. Tiene un respaldo popular muy alto por lo que al Estado no le quedará otra que sentarse en una mesa de negociación y hacer algunas concesiones políticas”, afirma un viejo militante de la extinta ETA político-militar (pm), una escisión de la banda que apostó por vías políticas hace más de dos décadas. Su cono-

cimiento de lo ocurre en los bajos fondos de la izquierda abertzale le empuja a mantener su nombre en el anonimato. No tiene miedo pero es precavido. Asegura que el largo debate interno iniciado por la izquierda abertzale en 2004 sobre los efectos de la lucha armada ha concluido, según su opinión, “con la imposición de la praxis del ala política a la testosterona del sector armado”.

Pero ese experimento iniciado entonces tras el discurso del líder abertzale, hoy encarcelado, Arnaldo Otegi en San Sebastián no ha sido una sencilla operación matemática. "Han asumido que las cuestiones políticas sólo pueden conseguirse con una lucha política", explica el ex dirigente etarra.

Un baño de realismo para un mundo remiso a salir de las sombras. Al fin y al cabo, deben de pensar los más reacios, exigir mediante el chantaje de las pistolas algo tan controvertido como la unión de Navarra y Euskadi, con una cultura común, la misma lengua y similares pasados, está teniendo un precio demasiado alto.

Desde la propia organización ilegalizada reconocen que los últimos movimientos de aproximación ya han comenzado, pero han advertido a sus bases de que se preparen para un proceso lento "que avanzará cuando el Gobierno acepte la mediación internacional", comentan fuentes de Batasuna. Los pilares sobre los que se asienta su esperanza están descritos en la denominada Declaración de Bruselas, un documento firmado el 29 de marzo pasado por cuatro premios Nobel por la Paz -el ex presidente surafricano, Frederik de Klerk; el arzobispo surafricano Desmond Tutú; el antiguo líder del Partido Laborista y Socialdemócrata de Irlanda del Norte, John Hume; y la ex presidenta irlandesa, Mary Robinson- además de por la prestigiosa Fundación Nelson Mandela.

El alma mater de esta iniciativa es Brian Currin, un abogado surafricano bregado en procesos de paz más complejos que el vasco como fueron el de su propio país y el norirlandés. En síntesis, su propuesta arranca con una declaración unilateral de alto el fuego por parte de la banda a la que debería seguir la aceptación del Gobierno español de una comisión internacional independiente que supervise la tregua con el fin de crear el clima de confianza necesario al inicio de nuevas conversaciones.

Aunque la declaración internacional no dirige ninguna petición concreta al Gobierno español más allá de responder a la tregua, Currin ha declarado que, en su opinión personal, entre las medidas que debería adoptar está la legalización de Batasuna, el acercamiento de los presos etarras al País Vasco y la relajación de la legislación sobre seguridad.

El Partido Popular considera que esta declaración lleva el respaldo del Gobierno de Zapatero aunque Rubalcaba jure y perjure que España no aceptará jamás una mediación externa porque “los únicos capacitados para verificar algo son las fuerzas de seguridad del estado”.

logic aside, any attempt by Batasuna to be present at the next elections will be pursued and neutralized if there is no previous express public declaration of rejecting arms. The situation of the 720 prisoners held in Spanish and French jails, that’s to say their being spread around outside the Basque Country, will be a cornerstone that marks the pace of the process. Or, at least, that’s what they hope. And, although it seems unlikely, "the time frame doesn’t run out”, concludes our abertzale source, with the municipal elections scheduled for May. At the moment, the positions are still separated by a huge abyss; icy water waiting for the spark to ignite the talks. From the Socialists to the abertzales: "The political discussion cannot be carried forward with the previous 'status'. We don’t accept the threats of arms, nor the d' esiderátum' (Navarra and its self-determination) after the violence that has been written", the Minister for the Cabinet Office, Ramón Jauregui, who knows much about the Basque situation, said recently.

And from the abertzales to the Socialists: "We don’t trust the true intentions of a politician like Zapatero who today is on the ropes", they say.

Nonetheless, in spite of the years of pain, or to be precise the cause of them, Basque terrorism continues each day to invalidate the calculations of those who confide in progress. "How can you trust to the goodness of that world when on one hand it speaks of peace and on the other shuts up on facing the clamour from a people fed up of feeling eternally protected by gangsters? Is that conciliatory?", asks a Basque businessman who has not let his arm be twisted by the terrorist organization and its threats.

In spite of all the words, in spite of the good intentions to be found on all sides, in spite of the terrible moral cost of the more than 900 lives that have been swept away by this conflict, to dismantle a clandestine network with more than half a century of history will not be easy.

That is why scepticism has succumbed to this new horizon that could open up, if that is it can be believed, after the ceasefire. There is only one intangible truth. People are tired of the hate. More than that: disgusted. Nobody now wants to see funerals as political milestones.

The great majority of the Basques are unanimous in that ETA has to disappear, but they can’t see when.

El último capítulo del proceso de desmarque por etapas de la violencia lo ofreció el pasado 27 de noviembre, con una declaración, en Pamplona, leída por Rufi Etxeberría, en la que anunció su pretensión de constituir un nuevo partido, que no solo rechazará la violencia sino que tenía pensado presentar unos estatutos para cumplir los requisitos de la Ley de Partidos en cuanto a la condena de la violencia. Se ha especulado incluso con que esos estatutos podrían estar literal y premeditamente copiados de los del PSOE. Fuentes abertzales aseguran, incluso, que ETA podría anunciar en breve que su alto el fuego “no tiene marcha atrás”. Ingeniería estratégica y lógica política al margen, cualquier intento de Batasuna por estar presente en las próximas elecciones será perseguido y neutralizado si antes no hay una declaración pública expresa de rechazo a las armas. La situación de los 720 presos en cárceles españolas y francesas, es decir, su dispersión fuera del País Vasco, serán pieza angular que marcará la velocidad del proceso. O al menos así lo esperan.

Y, aunque parezca poco creíble, "los plazos no se agotan”, concluye la fuente abertzale, con las elecciones municipales previstas para mayo.

A día de hoy, las posturas siguen estando separadas por un abismo de proporciones descomunales. Agua gélida para la mecha que encienda el fuego de las conversaciones. De los socialistas hacia los abertzales. "La discusión política no puede llevar aparejado un 'estatus' previo. No aceptamos las amenazas de las armas ni tampoco con el 'desiderátum' (Navarra y la autodeterminación) postviolento ya escrito", advirtió recientemente el Ministro para la presidencia, Ramón Jáuregui, buen conocedor de la realidad vasca.

Y de los abertzales hacia los socialistas. "No nos fiamos de las intenciones reales de un político como Zapatero que hoy está contra las cuerdas", avisan.

Sin embargo, a pesar de los años de dolor, o precisamente a causa de ellos, el terrorismo vasco sigue invalidando cada día los presupuestos de quienes confían en el progreso. "¿Cómo fiarse de la bondad de ese mundo cuando por un lado habla de paz y por otro lado calla ante el clamor de un pueblo hastiado de sentirse eternamente tutelado por una mafia? ¿Es eso distensión?", señala un empresario vasco al que la organización terrorista no ha conseguido doblarle el brazo con sus amenazas.

Cualquier intento de Batasuna por estar presente en las próximas elecciones será perseguido y neutralizado si antes no hay una declaración pública expresa de rechazo a las armas.

A pesar de todas las palabras, a pesar de las buenas intenciones que hay en todas las partes, a pesar del terrible coste moral para las más de 900 víctimas que se ha llevado por delante este conflicto, desmontar un entramado clandestino con más de medio siglo de historia no será fácil.

Por eso el escepticismo ha sucumbido a este nuevo horizonte que puede abrirse, si es que puede creerse, tras el alto el fuego. Sólo hay una verdad intangible. Hay fatiga del odio. Es más: asco. Nadie quiere ya ver funerales como hitos políticos. La inmensa mayoría de los vascos son unánimes en que ETA tiene que desaparecer, pero no imaginan cuándo.

wouldn’t like to lose myself in one of my landscapes, but to look at them from afar they are fine.” The work of Ricard Chiang (born Barcelona, 1966) is full of those abysses we like to look over but never want to fall into. The work of this chameleonic Catalan painter (Mallorquín by adoption) moves between the sordid and the ethereal. Or - why not? - both of them.

Transmuted Christian iconography, unsettling female portraits, impersonal landscapes…

Ricard invites us to lean over and look through the keyhole of a world of threatening atmospheres, of claustrophobic beauty. “I had my fears when I was little and never drew them. But as it’s never too late, I did it as an adult”. Influenced by disciplines as disparate as medieval art, the sinister, Chinese and Japanese art and comics, Chiang makes use of a time consuming technique that enables him to imprint his personal signature on the painting, providing it with an aura of a pagan altarpiece. “I use a pictorial technique based on aerography, brush, pencil and rubbing carbon pigment with the fingers and the hands. I superimpose innumerable layers of paint that slowly and laboriously start to put the image together. It’s a sort of technique very similar to that used by the Flemish painters, who combined the new materials and derivatives of industrial painting with more traditional techniques and materials”. The impeccably put together technique is one of the hallmarks of this versatile artist, who carries out an enormous amount of work before facing a blank board. “I never work intuitively. At times I make a few notes more like those of a physicist than those of a painter. I work on the sketches mentally, giving them shape in my head until I have a pretty clear idea. When I get it, I put myself straight to work on the base. Rarely does the final result match the conceived idea one hundred per cent, but it’s close enough.”

In his work it’s common to find the contrast of stylized elements with basic ones that, through “abstraction and realism”, live together to create his own special micro cosmos. A universe full of mysterious women, at times candid and at other times provocative: of sordid lavatories and urinals, of childhood nightmares and Zen landscapes. “In reality my landscapes are very abstract and are invented. The way of applying the paint and the finishes give it a photographic look. With the figures, I tend increasingly towards hyperrealism in the detail and abstraction in the backgrounds. I’m interested that a painting can be seen as much up close (the skin, the layers of paint, the texture, the transparency), as from a distance (the composition, the light and shade, the colours, etc.)”.

o me gustaría perderme en uno de mis paisajes, pero para verlos de lejos están bien”. La obra de Ricard Chiang (Barcelona, 1966) está llena de esos abismos a los que nos gusta asomarnos pero a los que jamás querríamos caer.

El trabajo del camaleónico pintor catalán (mallorquín de adopción) se mueve entre lo sórdido y lo etéreo. O, por qué no, en ambos. Iconografía cristiana transmutada, inquietantes retratos femeninos, paisajes impersonales… Ricard nos invita a asomarnos por el ojo de la cerradura de un mundo de atmósferas amenazadoras, de belleza claustrofóbica. “Los miedos los tenía de pequeño y nunca los dibujé. Pero como nunca es tarde, lo hice de mayor”. Influenciado por disciplinas tan dispares como el arte medieval, el tenebrismo, el arte chino y japonés o los cómics, Chiang emplea una laboriosa técnica que consigue imprimir en el cuadro una firma personal, dotándolo de un aura de retablo pagano. “Utilizo una técnica pictórica a base de aerografía, pincel, lápiz y frotando pigmento de carbón con los dedos y las manos. Superpongo incontables capas pictóricas que, lenta y laboriosamente, van constituyendo la imagen.

Se trata de una técnica muy similar a la utilizada por los pintores flamencos, que combina los nuevos materiales y derivados de la pintura

industrial con las técnicas y materiales más tradicionales”. La impecable factura técnica es una de las señas de identidad del polifacético artista, que realiza un enorme trabajo previo antes de enfrentarse a la tabla en blanco. “Nunca trabajo intuitivamente, a veces hago unos apuntes más parecidos a los de un físico que a los de un pintor; los bocetos los trabajo mentalmente, dándoles forma dentro de mi cabeza hasta que tengo una idea bastante clara. Cuando lo consigo, me pongo directamente sobre el soporte y pocas veces el resultado final es la idea concebida al cien por cien, pero se aproxima bastante.”

En su obra es común la contraposición de elementos estilizados con elementos primitivos que, a través de “abstracción y realismo”, conviven para crear su peculiar microcosmos. Un universo cargado de mujeres misteriosas, a veces cándidas y otras veces desafiantes; de sórdidos sanitarios y urinarios; de pesadillas infantiles y de paisajes zen. “En realidad mis paisajes son muy abstractos y son inventados. La forma de aplicar la pintura y los acabados le dan un aspecto fotográfico. En las figuras, tiendo cada vez más hacia un hiperrealismo en el detalle y una abstracción en los fondos. Me interesa que un cuadro se pueda mirar tanto de cerca (la piel, las capas de pintura, la textura, transparencia), como de lejos (la composición, claroscuros, colores, etc.)”.

uch of his work is subtly sprinkled with religious iconography, that’s a bit like Gothic art in its use of geometry and the hieratical attitude of the characters.

“The Christian iconography in my work is purely aesthetic. It has no hidden meaning (at least for me it doesn’t). When I walk through the Prado and I see a Fra Angelico or a van der Weyden my hair stands on end and they fill me with ‘envy and anger’; that’s what makes them influence my work”.

With a noticeable aesthetic style between naïf and funereal, the artistic output of Ricard Chiang is an amalgam of icons and a lack of them. It’s paradoxical that his work, which in appearance oozes classicism, has fed on other much more profane sources. “What (pop culture) has brought me is getting good results without going through academic filters. I have always been interested in other ways that are freer and less rigorous”. From there comes a man who was a devourer of graphic novels in his youth and a great admirer of the creator of Alien, the Swiss surrealist painter H.G. Giger –“one of the best painters of the twentieth century”. Midway between the meticulous Flemish painters and the sombre sensitivity of David Lynch, Ricard Chiang has found his niche in the shadows of art. H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Edward Gorey… all of them have belonged to the select club of those who have found success in penetrating a terrain where the unpleasant can be beautiful. “About my atmospheres… I believe it is a question of a pictorial stamp: although I strive to find another style, in the end I am going to stop here. I try not to belong to that club and make something beautiful from the beautiful. When I do a figure in a nightgown it looks like a ghost, and when I paint a woman with her eyes closed she looks dead. In the end… sometimes I have managed to do something that is not dismal and I stick to the path of being able to do a bit of everything.”

Con una marcada estética entre lo naíf y lo lúgubre, la producción artística de Ricard Chiang es toda una amalgama de iconos y de ausencia de ellos. Es paradójico que su trabajo, que en apariencia rezuma academicismo, se haya alimentado de otras fuentes mucho más profanas. “Lo que me ha aportado [la cultura pop] es obtener buenos resultados sin pasar por filtros académicos. Siempre me han interesado otras vías más libres y sin tanto rigor”. De ahí que fuera devorador de novelas gráficas en su juventud y gran admirador del creador de Alien, el pintor surrealista suizo H.G.Giger –“uno de los mejores pintores del siglo XX”. A caballo entre los meticulosos pintores flamencos y la sombría sensibilidad de David Lynch, Ricard Chiang ha encontrado su hueco en las tinieblas del arte. H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Edward Gorey… todos ellos han pertenecido al selecto club de los que han conocido el éxito adentrándose en terrenos donde lo desagradable puede ser hermoso. “Lo de mis atmósferas… creo que es una cuestión de impronta pictórica: aunque me esfuerce en hacer otro estilo al final voy a parar ahí. Intento no pertenecer a ese club y hacer bello lo bello pero cuando hago una figura en camisón parece un fantasma y cuando pinto una mujer con los ojos cerrados parece una muerta. En fin… alguna vez he conseguido hacer algo que no sea tétrico e insisto en ese camino de poder hacer de todo.”

Lights, Camera, Act… Oh my God!

Even don Quijote would have been surprised to learn about the misfortunes that Terry Gilliam lived through in 2000 with his (frustrated) attempt to bring the story of the naïve nobleman to the cinema screen. To start with, the noise from the manoeuvres of a squadron of Air Force fighters which made it impossible to do the recording. Soon after, a flood carried away part of their equipment and they had to change the locations for the filming. As if that were not enough, the lead actor fell ill and had to give up the film. And just to rub it in, poor Terry had to pay 15 million dollars to the insurer for not finishing the film.

Hasta el mismo Quijote se hubiera sorprendido al conocer las desventuras que vivió en el 2000 Terry Gilliam en su (frustrado) intento de llevar la historia del ingenioso hidalgo al cine. Para empezar, las maniobras de un escuadrón de cazas del ejército hicieron imposible la grabación, a causa del ruido. Poco después, una riada se llevó por delante parte del equipo y se tuvieron que modificar las localizaciones del rodaje. Por si esto fuera poco, el actor protagonista enfermó y abandonó la película. Y para colmo, el pobre Terry tuvo que pagar 15 millones de dólares a la aseguradora por no completar el film.

A wrong step ended forever the career of the promising Seville filmmaker Claudio Guerín. After making several reasonably successful full length films and plenty of work for television, he set out in 1973 to make the film La Campana del Infierno (the Bell of Hell), an ambitious story of terror and revenge. Bad luck deemed it that the filmmaker fell more than 20 metres from a bell tower during the recording of one of the final scenes in the film. Juan Antonio Bardem picked up the reins of filming and took charge of finishing the film.

Un paso en falso truncó para siempre la carrera del prometedor realizador sevillano Claudio Guerín. Tras varios largometrajes de cierto éxito y numerosos trabajos en televisión, en 1973 se había embarcado en el rodaje de La Campana del Infierno, una ambiciosa historia de terror y venganzas. La mala suerte quiso que el cineasta cayese al vacío desde un campanario, situado a más de veinte metros de altura, durante la grabación de una de las escenas finales de la película. Juan Antonio Bardem tomó las riendas del rodaje y se encargó de finalizar la cinta.

Empusa is one of the most recent damned films of Spanish cinema. The plot sounds inoffensive: a story of terror about women who are half vampire and half mermaid. However, two directors lost their lives during the filming. The project got under way in 2007 under the direction of Carlos Aured, but a week after starting work on the filming he died of a heart attack. Paul Naschy took his place, but he didn’t manage to finish the film either.

He died before seeing it finished. Finally, their assistants managed to bring an end to this horrifying story.

Empusa es una de las películas malditas más recientes del cine español. La trama parece inofensiva: una historia de terror sobre mujeres mitad vampiro, mitad sirena. Sin embargo, dos directores perdieron la vida a lo largo del rodaje.

El proyecto empezó en 2007 bajo la dirección de Carlos Aured, pero una semana después de haber comenzado a trabajar en la grabación el cineasta falleció de un infarto. Paul Naschy tomó el relevo del rodaje pero tampoco logró finalizar la película: murió antes de verla completada. Finalmente, sus ayudantes consiguieron poner punto y final a esta truculenta historia.

When Fernando Delgado began filming El Genio Alegre (The Happy Genius) in 1936, he didn’t know that would be the year that was going to pass into the history books.

The start of the Spanish Civil War caught the director in the middle of the filming.

But that was not the only mishap. Soon afterwards a typhus epidemic hit the team hard. On top of that, a resurgence in the fighting forced several of the film’s actors to escape into exile, because of their republican ideals. The rest of the filming was postponed until the end of the war in 1939, but they had to use doubles to take the place of the exiled actors.

Cuando Fernando Delgado inició el rodaje de El Genio Alegre, en 1936, aún no sabía por qué ese año iba a pasar a los libros de historia. El inicio de la Guerra Civil española encontró al cineasta en mitad del rodaje.

Pero eso no fue el único contratiempo.

Poco después, una epidemia de tifus castigó duramente al equipo. Además, el recrudecimiento de la contienda forzó a varios actores de la película a marcharse al exilio, por sus ideas republicanas. La grabación de la película fue aplazada hasta el final de la guerra, en 1939, pero tuvieron que utilizarse dobles en sustitución de los actores exiliados.

NOBEL Five Latin American authors (and more than 20 candidates who have left with their hands empty) in a century of Nobel Prizes for Literature full of absences. words by david pérez

n the centre of the stage stands Per Wästberg, dressed in a black suit, giving a solemn speech.

The president of the Nobel Committee recites it from memory, in English, while the audience at the Stockholm Concert Hall listens, uninterrupted by other sounds and wrapped in strict silence, as from another era. From time to time, the set director for the ceremony changes the scene and another person appears in the picture. The first time Mario Vargas Llosa was a candidate for the Nobel Literature Prize he was a 41-year-old novelist. Today he’s a grey-haired maestro, and he remained seated along with the rest of the award winners for the year. He didn’t get up from his seat until the Swedish academic addressed him directly, for the first time in the history of the ceremony speaking in Spanish. “You have encapsulated the history of twentieth century society in a bubble of imagination. This has been kept floating in the air for 50 years, and it’s still shining. The Swedish Academy salutes you.” More than 20 years had passed since the last Latin American author walked up the blue carpet. The Spanish-speaking part of the universe could now celebrate the victory of the author of La guerra del fin del mundo (The war of the End of the World) as if it were a World Cup. Being a Nobel Literature Prize winner is another way of leading a people. Vargas Llosas failed in his attempt to become President of Peru in 1990, but via the literary path he has just become a national hero.

At the same time, around much of the world the media was publishing, as every year, the names of its eternal national candidates for the Nobel.

In Argentina they were talking of Sábato, and remembered Borges and Cortázar. In Chile, of Nicanor Parra; in Nicaragua, Ernesto Cardenal; and in Spain, Javier Marías. Once again the Mexicans resuscitated Juan Rulfo. Meanwhile, different juries of writers, professors, journalists

and presidents censured the awarding of the prize to the Peruvian for political reasons. The left wing heirs of the Cuban revolution talked of conspiracies, of bribes. That is another characteristic of the Nobel Prize: it’s also capable of multiplying your enemies.

Eternal candidates A few days before the ceremony, during his acceptance speech, Vargas Llosa made several references eulogizing various Latin American colleagues. He named Borges, Rulfo and his compatriot César Vallejo (two mentions for each of the three), and also remembered Cortázar, Fuentes, Cabrera Infante, Juan Carlos Onetti, Carpentier, Jorge Edwards, Amado Nervo, José Donoso, Neruda, García Márquez and Octavio Paz. With the exception of the last three, none of the authors on the list had ever won a Nobel Prize, although most of them have been candidates at some time and those that are still alive have been from time to time. Each Nobel Prize winner has his or her own dark double; their own antiNobel. If in the case of Miguel Ángel Asturias it was Borges, and until last year that of García Márquez had been Vargas Llosa, Mexico’s Carlos Fuentes has now been turned into the antiNobel of the Peruvian. “If we are to balance up an era of Latin American literature we can speak of the Academy now complying with the boom. It’s possible that the importance of Fuentes has been mitigated”, says another Peruvian, the poet Renato Sandoval. “But there are still so many authors to be considered… such as Ernesto Sábato, who in June will be 100 years old! and in a way is our Dostoevsky, even if in Argentina there are many who are not in favour of him.” Every year the Swedish Academy writes hundreds of letters to institutions all around the world inviting them to nominate candidates for the Nobel Prize. Ever since 2006, Sábato has been one of the three chosen by the Sociedad General de Autores (authors’ society - SGAE). In 2010, the Spanish body also pushed in Stockholm for Ernesto Cardenal -“I’m not interested in the Nobel”, he told journalists last February- and Spain’s Miguel Delibes, who died in March 2010.

British professor Niall Binns has a deep knowledge of the Chilean scene. “The figures

of Gabriela Mistral and Neruda are central to the configuration of the national identity. The persistent claims for a Nobel Prize for Nicanor Parra, who has had political support at certain times and without doubt wide-scale popular backing, has much to do with a certain idea that the prize should go, almost by right, to the latest great poet”. The founder of anti poetry was nominated for the first time in 1995, with the support of the University of New York. His name was put forward once more in 2000 and yet again in 2005, supported on these occasions by a powerful public and private machine both in Chile and in Spain. Today, his cause has cooled off. “Now he’s 96, I see it as impossible. On top of that, how do you give a third prize to Chile without even one for Argentina and Uruguay?” asks Binns. “Cardenal has things in his favour, but his revolutionary argument, which so seduced people a couple of decades ago, sounds ever more dated. Roberto Bolaño died young.

Candidates for the future? No idea”.

Artur Lundkvist In 1980, two years before he received the Nobel Prize, an article by García Márquez about the Swedish academics was published in Spain. “How they go about things, how they reach agreement, what are the real commitments that determine their intentions is one of the best kept secrets of our times”.

In the shadows of the candidature of the Colombian and the majority of the firm candidatures of other Spanishspeaking authors during the ‘70s and ‘80s was the hidden presence of Swedish poet and translator Artur Lundkvist. Before the Second World War he had introduced his country to authors such as Arthur Rimbaud, T.S. Eliot, James Joyce and William Faulkner. In the ‘40s, he met Gabriela Mistral in Stockholm, and the poet opened the doors for him to Neruda and Mexico’s Octavio Paz. It was he who translated the poetry of Guatemala’s Miguel Ángel Asturias and Paz into Swedish for the first time, both of whom later became winners of the Nobel Prize. And, in spite of what would happen later, he was also the first translator of Borges into Swedish.

Desde la última vez que un autor latinoamericano había cruzado la alfombra azul habían pasado más de 20 años.

El universo hispanohablante celebraba ahora la victoria del autor de La guerra del fin del mundo como un Mundial de fútbol. Ser Nobel de Literatura es una forma alternativa de liderar un pueblo. Vargas Llosas había fracasado en su tentativa de ser Presidente de Perú en 1990, pero por la vía literaria se acababa de convertir en héroe nacional. Al mismo tiempo, en medio mundo los medios publicaban, como cada año, los nombres de sus eternos candidatos

nacionales al Nobel. En Argentina se hablaba de Sábato y se recordaba a Borges y Cortázar.

En Chile, de Nicanor Parra. En Nicaragua, de Ernesto Cardenal; de Javier Marías en España.

Un invierno más, los mexicanos resucitaban a Juan Rulfo. Mientras tanto, diferentes tribunas de escritores, profesores, periodistas y presidentes censuraban el premio al peruano por razones políticas. La izquierda heredera de la revolución cubana hablaba de conspiraciones, de amaños. Ésa es otra característica del Nobel: también es capaz de multiplicar tus enemigos.

Candidatos eternos Varios días antes de la ceremonia, durante su discurso, Vargas Llosa hizo elogiosas referencias a varios colegas latinoamericanos.

Nombró a Borges, Rulfo y a su compatriota César Vallejo (dos veces a cada uno de los tres), y se acordó también de Cortázar, Fuentes, Cabrera Infante, Juan Carlos Onetti, Carpentier, Jorge Edwards, Amado Nervo, José Donoso, Neruda, García Márquez y Octavio Paz. A excepción de los tres últimos, ninguno de los autores de la lista había ganado nunca el Nobel, aunque la mayoría habían sido candidatos alguna vez, y los que seguían vivos todavía lo eran de vez en cuando. Cada Premio Nobel tiene su propio doble oscuro, su antinobel. Si el de Miguel Ángel Asturias fue Borges y hasta el año pasado el de García Márquez había sido Vargas Llosa, el mexicano Carlos Fuentes se ha transformado ahora en el antinobel del peruano. “Si con saldar una época de la literatura latinoamericana hablamos de que la Academia ha cumplido ya con el boom, es posible que la importancia de Fuentes se relativice”, piensa el poeta (también peruano) Renato Sandoval. “Pero quedarían aún tantos autores por considerar… como Ernesto Sábato, que en junio cumple ¡100 años!, y que de alguna manera es nuestro Dostoievski, si bien en Argentina hay muchos que no lo favorecen.” La Academia Sueca escribe cada año cientos de cartas a

instituciones de todo el mundo invitándolas a proponer candidatos al Nobel. Desde 2006, Sábato es uno de los tres elegidos de la Sociedad General de Autores (SGAE). En 2010, el ente español también pujó en Estocolmo por Ernesto Cardenal -“a mí no me interesa el Nobel”, dijo a los periodistas en febrero- y el español Miguel Delibes, que falleció en marzo.

El profesor británico Niall Binns conoce en profundidad el escenario chileno. “Las figuras de Gabriela Mistral y Neruda son centrales en la configuración de la identidad nacional, y los insistentes reclamos del Nobel para Nicanor Parra, que han tenido respaldo político en ciertos momentos y sin duda un amplio apoyo popular, tienen que ver con cierta idea de que el premio debería llegar, casi por derecho propio, al nuevo poeta grande”. El fundador de la antipoesía fue propuesto por primera vez en 1995, con el apoyo de la Univerdidad de Nueva York. Volvió a serlo en el año 2000 y de nuevo en 2005, impulsado esta vez por una potente maquinaria pública y privada tanto en Chile como en España.

Hoy, su causa se ha enfriado. “A sus 96 años lo veo imposible. Además, ¿cómo dar un tercer premio a Chile sin que haya uno solo en Argentina y Uruguay?”, se pregunta Bins.

“Cardenal tiene cosas a favor, pero su discurso revolucionario, que tanto sedujo hace un par de décadas, va sonando cada vez más anacrónico. Roberto Bolaño murió joven. ¿Candidatos del futuro? Ni idea”.

Artur Lundkvist En 1980, dos años antes de recibir el Nobel, García Márquez publicó en España un artículo sobre los académicos suecos. “Cómo proceden, cómo se ponen de acuerdo, cuáles son los compromisos reales que determinan sus designios, es uno de los secretos mejor guardados de nuestro tiempo”. En la sombra de la candidatura del colombiano y de la mayoría de propuestas firmes de otros autores hispanohablantes durante los 70 y los 80 se oculta la presencia del poeta y traductor Artur Lundkvist. Antes de la 2ª Guerra Mundial, el sueco había introducido en su país a autores como Arthur Rimbaud, T.S. Eliot, James Joyce o William Faulkner. En los años 40, conoció en Estocolmo a Gabriela Mistral, y la poeta le abrió las puertas de Neruda y del mexicano Octavio Paz. Fue él quien tradujo por primera vez al sueco la poesía del guatemalteco Miguel Ángel Asturias y del propio Paz, a la postre ambos ganadores del Nobel. Y a pesar de lo que ocurriría después, también fue el primer traductor al sueco de Borges.

n 1968, when he was proposed to become part of the Academy, Lundkvist admitted that he did it “for Neruda”. “That way I could have more influence in the prize”. Notwithstanding the hidden pressures from the CIA via the Congress for Cultural Freedom, the Chilean managed to get the academics agreement in 1971. Seven years later, Lundkvist made public a list of his 18 favourites for the following year. Among them were Vargas Llosa, García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortázar, but the Swede was only given time to present the Colombian to the King of Sweden. Many years later Vargas Llosa would have a second chance. Cortázar, on the other hand, died soon after, in 1984, and his adhesion to revolutionary ideology – as happened also to Cuba’s Alejo Carpentier – was not well regarded in the Prize’s Scandinavian homelands.

The case of Borges merits its own explanation. The reports on the deliberations of the Nobel jury are kept each year in a sealed envelope. One of the rules of the Academy prohibits revealing any information about the arguments against a candidate until 50 years after his or her last official nomination. In accordance with this norm, the truth about Borges’ absence from the Nobel lists will not be known until 2035. Fortunately, there is sufficient information to complete the story. In 1968, the Argentinean was on the point of winning for the first time before Miguel Ángel Asturias took it, and from then until the time of his death he

never failed to be a candidate for the Nobel honour. The point of inflection came in 1976. That year Borges received a University of Chile Honoris Causa doctorate from the hands of Augusto Pinochet, an event that would pass into the history books as being the official omen for the author of El Aleph with the Chilean dictatorship.

The detail was not appreciated in Europe, and caused much displeasure to Artur Lundkvist. In the book Borges, esplendor y derrota (Borges, splendour and defeat), Maria Esther Vázquez added a chapter in which the Swede is also a leading figure. In 1964, at a dinner in Stockholm, one of the guests read a poem of Lundkvist’s and Borges ridiculed it in a low voice. According to the author, who was there at the time, the academic never forgave him. Borges died in 1986 and Lundkvist five years later. Speaking about the Swedish translator, García Márquez thought he was the only member of the Academy who knew how to read in Spanish. “It’s Lundkvist who knows the works of our writers, who proposes our candidatures and fights the hidden battle for them”. Since Lundkvist’s death, Mario Vargas Llosa is the first Spanish-speaking writer to receive the award.

After the eclipse Until the boom exploded in the ‘60s, Latin American literature had lived under a permanent eclipse. Before that big bang, many important authors from the previous generation, such as Uruguay’s Juan Carlos Onetti, Carpentier, Borges and Rulfo, were barely read outside their own countries. “It’s a fact that from that decade onwards certain political events, such as the Cuban revolution; and commercial ones, as well as the boom, made the Europeans look at Latin American culture and literature”, notes Eduardo Ramos-Izquierdo, professor of Hispanic American Literature at the Sorbonne. That is when the writers from the cono sur (the southern part of Southern America) started to be translated into various languages and to emerge from the water like a vast lost continent. However, editorial, popular and critical success is not enough to win a Nobel Prize. It depends on more intimate sensitivities,

on subtle tendencies. “What’s more, we must not forget that it’s not always the same jury that is voting. And it is clear that the lobbies, both by definition and practice, are also central in the decision-taking,” argues the Mexican professor.

Every 31 January the date closes for presenting candidatures, and from February onwards the selection process is tremendous. From an initial list of 300 names, usually no more than five are left by the month of May. Over the summer the academics read the complete works of the candidates in as many translations as possible, and then vote on them in September. The reasons for a number of controversial rejections have in some cases a certain logic. Juan Rulfo dazzled with his Pedro Páramo, but his work, in general, cannot be considered extensive. César Vallejo, on the other hand, was a prodigious poet, yet when he died he had only published two books, and his most important collections of poems, Poemas humanos and España aparta de mí este cáliz, were published posthumously.

Although the Swedish Academy takes personal charge of the translations of some authors with the goal of getting a deep knowledge of their work, language has often become a barrier.

“How many authors are translated into Swedish, or even into English, French, Italian and German, which are the languages that are used by 90% of those that make up the Nobel Committee”, asks the poet Renato Sandoval. “Almost a century had to pass before at last a writer in Portuguese, Saramago, was awarded the prize; or in Arabic, Mahfuz”.

Neruda believed that “all writers from this planet called Earth want at some time to win the Nobel Prize, including those who don’t say it and also those who deny it.” The youngest Latin American authors (or those who have lived enough) have received the Premio Cervantes (Spanish literature award), but the Swedish Academy has already left out many outstanding figures such as Rómulo Gallegos, Alfonso Reyes, José Lezama Lima, Bioy Casares, Augusto Roa and Mario Benedetti, and has still not taken into account writers like Juan Gelman, Gonzalo Rojas, Sergio Pitol and Eduardo Galeano. One thing is clear: a century is not long enough to contain the world’s literature.

Like the referee of a football match, perhaps the Swedish Academy is right and wrong in such a balanced way that all the world’s writers feel, at the end of their lives, as content on one side as they do on the other. At the end of the day, ending up sharing posterity with writers who died without a Nobel Prize, such as Franz Kafka, James Joyce, Henrik Ibsen, Paul Valéry, Graham Greene and Vladimir Nabokov is not profane luck but a divine honour.

Siete años después, Lundkvist hizo pública una lista con sus 18 favoritos para el año siguiente. Allí estaban Vargas Llosa, García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges y Julio Cortázar, pero al sueco sólo le dio tiempo a llevar al colombiano ante el Rey de Suecia. Muchos años después, Vargas Llosa tendría una segunda oportunidad. Cortázar, en cambio, murió pronto, en 1984, y su adhesión al ideario revolucionario -como le ocurrió también al cubano Alejo Carpentier- no estaba bien vista en el patria escandinava.

El caso Borges merece una explicación aparte. Los informes sobre las deliberaciones del jurado del Nobel se guardan cada año en un sobre sellado. Una de las normas de la Academia prohíbe revelar cualquier información sobre los argumentos en contra de un candidato hasta que no hayan transcurrido 50 años desde su última proposición oficial. Según esto, la verdad sobre la ausencia de Borges en la lista de los Nobel se conocerá en el año 2035. Por suerte, existen indicios suficientes para completar la historia. En 1968, el argentino estuvo por primera vez a punto de ganar ante Miguel Ángel Asturias, y desde entonces hasta la fecha de su muerte ya no dejó de ser candidato al Nobel. El punto de inflexión fue 1976. Ese año, Borges recibió de manos de Augusto Pinochet el Doctorado Honoris Causa de la Universidad de Chile, y esos hechos pasarían a los libros de historia como el auspicio oficial del autor de El Aleph a la dictadura chilena. El detalle no gustó en Europa, y disgustó mucho a Artur

Lundkvist. En el libro Borges, esplendor y derrota Maria Esther Vázquez añade un capítulo donde el sueco también es un personaje principal.

En 1964, durante una cena en Estocolmo, un invitado leyó un poema de Lundkvist y Borges lo ridiculizó en voz baja. Según la autora, que estaba presente, el académico no se lo perdonó jamás. Borges murió en 1986 y Lundkvist cinco años más tarde. Sobre el traductor sueco, García Márquez pensaba que era el único miembro de la Academia que sabía leer en castellano. “Es Lundkvist quien conoce la obra de nuestros escritores, quien propone sus candidaturas y quien libra por ellos la batalla secreta”. Desde su muerte, Mario Vargas Llosa es el primer escritor hispanohablante que obtiene el galardón.

Después del eclipse Hasta que el boom estalló en los años 60, la literatura latinoamericana había vivido bajo un eclipse permanente. Antes del aquel big bang, muchos autores importantes de la generación anterior, como el uruguayo Juan Carlos Onetti, Carpentier, Borges o Rulfo, apenas se habían leído más allá de sus propios países.

“Es un hecho que a partir de esa década ciertos hechos políticos, la revolución cubana; y comerciales, el boom, atrajeron la mirada europea a la cultura y literatura latinoamericanas”, apunta Eduardo Ramos-Izquierdo, catedrático de literatura hispanoamericana en la Sorbonne. Los autores del cono sur empezaron entonces a traducirse a múltiples idiomas, y emergieron sobre las aguas como un vasto continente perdido. Sin embargo, el éxito editorial, popular y de crítica no es suficiente para ganar un Nobel. Depende de sensibilidades más íntimas, de tendencias sutiles. “Además, no podemos olvidar que no siempre es el mismo jurado el que vota. Y está claro que los lobbies, por definición y práctica, también son centrales en la toma de decisiones”, argumenta el profesor mexicano.

Cada 31 de enero se cierra el plazo para la presentación de candidaturas, y a partir de febrero el proceso de criba es fulminante. De una lista inicial de trescientos nombres no suelen llegar más de cinco al mes de mayo. En verano, los académicos leen la obra completa

de los candidatos en todas las traducciones posibles, y votan en septiembre. Las razones de algunos descartes polémicos son en ciertos casos de una lógica verosímil. Juan Rulfo deslumbró con Pedro Páramo, pero su obra, en general, no puede considerarse extensa. César Vallejo, en cambio, fue un poeta voluminoso, pero cuando murió sólo había publicado dos libros y sus poemarios más importantes, Poemas humanos y España aparta de mí este cáliz, fueron póstumos. Aunque la Academia Sueca encarga por su cuenta traducciones de algunos candidatos con el fin de conocer a fondo su obra, el idioma se ha convertido a menudo en una barrera. “¿Cuántos autores están traducidos al sueco o, en todo caso al inglés, francés, italiano o alemán, que son los idiomas que maneja el 90% de los que conforman el Comité Nobel”, se pregunta el poeta Renato Sandoval. “Ha tenido que pasar casi un siglo para que por fin se premiara a un autor en portugués, Saramago; o en árabe, Mahfuz”.

Neruda creía que “todo escritor de este planeta llamado Tierra quiere alcanzar alguna vez el Premio Nobel, incluso los que no lo dicen y también los que lo niegan.” Los autores latinoamericanos más jóvenes (o los que han vivido lo suficiente) han recibido el Premio Cervantes, pero la Academia Sueca ya ha saltado por encima de muchas figuras sobresalientes como Rómulo Gallegos, Alfonso Reyes, José Lezama Lima, Bioy Casares, Augusto Roa o Mario Benedetti, y todavía no ha tenido en cuenta a autores como Juan Gelman, Gonzalo Rojas, Sergio Pitol o Eduardo Galeano. Una cosa está clara: un siglo no es tiempo suficiente para contener la literatura universal. Como el árbitro de un partido de fútbol, quizás la Academia Sueca acierta y se equivoca de forma tan equilibrada que todos los escritores del mundo se sienten, al final de su vida, tan contentos a un lado como al otro. Al fin y al cabo, llegar a compartir la posteridad con autores que murieron sin Nobel como Franz Kafka, James Joyce, Henrik Ibsen, Paul Valéry, Graham Greene o Vladimir Nabokov no es un azar profano, sino un honor divino.

I am always being asked why the papers and television channels are so interested in New York’s weather when a snowstorm in Moscow never makes the headlines. And, of course, the extremes of cold and heat that at times hit Spain never interest the US media. Fortunately. With the little they look at foreign news in this countr y’s press, all they need to do, on top of ever ything, is to pay attention to our skies! During the decade I have been living in New York, among the few times that something has been published about Spain inevitably it includes the word ‘Franco’ in the article. It’s the same whether they are writing about Almodóvar, football, flamenco or food. It’s the inevitable reference point, and other correspondents and I are always joking about it. However, one topic that has not managed to attract any of the clichés that are always generated by news about Spain is the economic crisis. Franco has been kicked out of the news related to Spain and, what’s more, we have hit the front pages of the papers. It happened miraculously last December in a lengthy report about Yebes, one of the many ghost towns in the homeland that the crisis has left in its wake, published on page one of The New York Times. Not so much as a trace of the dictator. A shame that it had to be the infamy of the illfated bricks (the construction sector) that tore the protagonism away from someone who stopped darkening the histor y of our countr y nearly 40 years ago. Now, between drinks with acquaintances, nobody asks about Franco but about unemployment and evictions. In a way the United States and Spain have become twinned with this crisis and it seems that a certain empathy has been established. Here, there are also more unemployed and evictions than ever before. The possibility that the banks might have to be rescued by the European Union keeps hovering in the news, although it has to be recognized that winning the Soccer World Cup has also contributed to Spain now appearing quite often in the sports sections. Ferran Adrià and other Spanish chefs have also added their grains of salt in pushing Franco out of the news about Spain. I imagine it was difficult linking lyophilized pistachio foam with the dictatorship. But, without a doubt, the crisis has been the fundamental factor. Ever y cloud has a silver lining, as they say.

A OBSESIÓN DE ESPAÑA con Estados Unidos, y en particular con Nueva York, suele ser unidireccional: todo lo que ocurre en la ciudad de los rascacielos, aunque sea una simple nevada –en esta urbe el invierno a menudo se tiñe de blanco- se convierte en noticia para la prensa española. Siempre me he preguntado por qué los periódicos y televisiones se interesan tanto por la meteorología neoyorquina mientras que una nevada en Moscú nunca da titulares.

Y por supuesto, el frío o el calor extremo que a veces golpea España jamás tiene eco entre los medios estadounidenses.

Afortunadamente. Con lo poco que se mira hacia el extranjero en la prensa de este país solo faltaría que encima le prestaran atención a nuestros cielos. Durante la década que llevo viviendo en Nueva York los pocos artículos que se han publicado sobre España incluían irremediablemente la palabra Franco. Da igual que versaran sobre Almodóvar, fútbol, toros, flamenco o gastronomía. Era la referencia inevitable y con otros corresponsales siempre bromeábamos al respecto.

Sin embargo, lo que no ha conseguido ninguno de los tópicos que siempre han generado noticias sobre la península lo ha conseguido la crisis económica: Franco ha sido desterrado de la información relacionada con España y además, hemos llegado a las portadas de los diarios. Ocurrió milagrosamente el pasado diciembre con un amplio reportaje sobre Yebes, uno de los muchos pueblos fantasma patrios que ha dejado la crisis a su paso, publicado en primera plana de The New York Times. Ni rastro del dictador. Lástima que haya tenido que ser la fama del infausto ladrillo la que le haya quitado el protagonismo a alguien que dejó de ensombrecer la historia de nuestro país hace casi cuarenta años. Ahora, entre copa y copa ya nadie te pregunta por Franco sino por el paro o los desahucios. De alguna manera Estados Unidos y España se han hermanado en esta crisis y parece que se ha creado una cierta empatía –aquí también hay más parados que nunca y más desahucios que nunca. La posibilidad de que los bancos españoles tengan que ser rescatados por la Unión Europea sigue planeando en las noticias, aunque hay que reconocer que haber ganado el Mundial de fútbol ha contribuido a que España ahora aparezca también a menudo en las páginas de deportes. Ferran Adrià y otros chefs españoles también han puesto su granito de arena en la expulsión de Franco de la información sobre España. Imagino que era difícil conectar la espuma liofilizada de pistacho con la dictadura. Pero sin duda, la crisis ha sido fundamental. No hay mal que por bien no venga, dicen.

uan José Ballesta returns to the foreground of the world of cinema and television. Right now he’s there with two films in which he has the lead role, Entre Lobos and Bruc, and on television the Madrid actor continues to play the part of Paulo, one of the main characters in the series Hispania on Antena 3. Ever since the actor from the southern suburb of Parla burst successfully into the world of cinema eleven years ago with the film El Bola (Achero Mañas), the professional and personal life of Juanjo Ballesta has shot past so rapidly that at only 23 years of age he is now the father of ‘Juanjito’, a lad of three, is happily married with Verónica, his girlfriend from the same district, and guards with pride the Goya and Concha de Plata awards he has won at his home in a small town in Toledo province, away from the bustle of the city sidewalks. That is precisely where we head with the actor, after a long photo session on the outskirts of Madrid. On this occasion it has not been necessary to take much time building up confidence with the interviewee. From the first moment, his simple and close nature creates an atmosphere of a dialogue between friends. It seems unreal that an actor of his stature can live a life so different from what we imagine when we talk of stars of the celluloid screen. He gives off the sensation that he has seen it all. “I like to go fishing and hunting with my family, I’m good at cooking and here in the country I feel good, away from the agglomerations of the cities,” confesses Juanjo. Analyzing in depth his meteoric career, it’s not so strange that he lives at a different tempo from others of his age. He was only 12 years old when he won a Goya as the best new actor in El Bola.

Since then he hasn’t stopped growing professionally and personally, making films with some of the best Spanish directors, like Fernando Trueba and Antonio Mercero, and selecting roles so fulfilling as the young delinquent Tano in Siete Vírgenes –the film with which he won the Concha de Plata for best actor at the San Sebastián festival in 2005. His life was going so fast that he had to stop. “I’ve supported the fame pretty well up until now, although I’ve tried my hand at other things: I worked as a mason and in construction. It was to wake me up a bit because everything happened to me when I was very young. When I was only 16 years old, doing three promotions for films, and the stress and everybody recognizing you. That’s hard to do. I had a couple of years doing nothing and it’s been good for me, for seeing what I want to do in my life, so as not to burn out my career as an actor”, he says. People who have worked with him agree that the lad from Parla has an innate talent for acting that comes from within him. So much so that when the filming begins he hardly ever has to do much in the way of preparation for his dialogues: “The truth is that I look at the script a couple of times at night before going to sleep and the following day I remember it all perfectly. What is important is not to burn out on things. I believe that roles come from within.” Now Juanjo is living a new personal and interpretative stage that has led him to parts in action and adventure movies, to abandon the role of “delinquent” in which he was becoming “typecast”. His role as a father has made him an “adult all of a sudden” and taught him to take seriously his profession in the world of cinema because he wants to get to the very top. His goal is Hollywood: “My dream was to have a house in the country and a good car and I already have that. The next step is to go to Hollywood and reach the top. I hope I can represent Spanish cinema and win an Oscar”.

Desde que el actor del barrio de Parla irrumpiera exitosamente en el mundo del cine hace once años con la película El Bola (de Achero Mañas), la vida profesional y personal de Juanjo Ballesta ha transcurrido tan rápido que con tan sólo veintitrés años ya es padre de ‘Juanjito’, un chaval de tres años; está felizmente casado con Verónica, su novia del barrio; y guarda con orgullo un Goya y una Concha de Plata en su casa -situada en una pequeña localidad toledana, alejada del mundanal ruido de las aceras=. Es precisamente hacia allí donde nos dirigimos con el actor, tras una larga sesión de fotos en las afueras de Madrid. En esta ocasión no ha sido necesario demasiado tiempo para tomar confianza con el entrevistado. Desde el primer instante, su sencillez y cercanía crean una atmósfera de diálogo entre amigos. Parece mentira que un actor de esa categoría lleve una vida tan diferente a la que nos imaginamos cuando hablamos de estrellas del celuloide. Da la sensación de que ya lo ha vivido todo: “Me gusta ir a pescar y a cazar con la familia, se me da bien la cocina y aquí en el campo estoy bien, alejado de las aglomeraciones de las ciudades”, confiesa Juanjo. Analizando con profundidad su meteórica carrera, no resulta tan extraño que viva con otros tiempos diferentes a los de la gente de su edad.

Con tan sólo doce años ganó un Goya como mejor actor revelación por El Bola y desde entonces no ha parado de crecer profesional y personalmente haciendo películas con algunos de los mejores directores españoles, como Fernando Trueba o Antonio Mercero, entre otros; y escogiendo papeles tan redondos como el del joven delincuente Tano en Siete Vírgenes –filme por el que ganó la Concha de Plata como mejor actor en el Festival de San Sebastián de 2005–. Su vida iba tan deprisa que tuvo que parar. “He llevado la fama bastante bien hasta ahora, aunque sí he metido mano en otros mundos: estuve trabajando como marmolista y en la obra. Fue por despejarme un poco porque todo me pilló muy joven. Con tan sólo dieciséis años, hacer tres promociones de pelis, el estrés y que todo el mundo te conozca… Es duro de llevar. Estuve un par de años sin hacer nada y me ha venido muy bien para ver qué quiero hacer en mi vida, para no quemar mi carrera como actor”, reconoce. Los que han trabajado con él coinciden en que el de Parla tiene un talento innato para la interpretación, le sale de dentro. Tanto es así que cuando llega a un rodaje casi nunca se prepara exhaustivamente sus diálogos: “La verdad es que me miro el guión un par de veces por la noche, antes de dormir, y al día siguiente me acuerdo perfectamente de todo. Lo importante es no quemar las cosas, creo que los papeles salen de dentro”. Ahora Juanjo vive una nueva etapa personal e interpretativa que le ha llevado a hacer papeles de acción y aventuras, a abandonar el rol de “delincuente” donde se le estaba “encasillando”.

Su responsabilidad como padre le ha hecho “adulto de golpe y porrazo” y le ha enseñado a tomarse en serio su profesión en el mundo del cine porque quiere llegar a lo más alto. Su meta es Hollywood: “Mi sueño era tener una casa en el campo y un buen coche y ya lo tengo. Lo siguiente es irme a Hollywood y llegar a lo más alto. Ojalá pueda representar al cine español y conseguir un Oscar”.
