Football for connaisseurs

I’M WRITING THESE LINES WITH THE INTENTION of not talking about football. But it’s impossible! The hangover of the World Cup is still with us (literally). In this glorious month we have learnt that Africa has never stopped existing, that the vuvuzelas hail from some sort of traditional torture, and that God also commits errors. And, what things has this victory brought for Spain, apart from a tsunami of good vibes, a star on the national team shirt and a peak in birth statistics?

To start with, a gigantic marketing campaign at minimum cost. This group has been able to leave a brilliant impression on the collective imagery. Let’s recap: imperturbable coach, invisible heroes of solidarity football, stoic patience against dirty play, and a Disney ending with kiss included… Could we ask for more? Yes, because this epic gesture will bring with it an expected boom in tourism, a growth in GDP of up to 0,7%, and a revaluation of 10% in the financial markets (according to the most encouraging forecasts).

It's the triumph of a block, in plural, without complexes, without fissures, with many accents but an identical sentiment. Let nobody be surprised by that. Just like our gastronomy, the leading player in this issue, contrasts have always been our hallmark. Making the complex simple and combining the special qualities without altering the harmony of the whole is something that our chefs discovered three decades ago in the so-called “Spanish nouvelle cuisine revolution”. Now, our sportsmen have put it into practice. Various languages, different customs, a common culture. The bravery of Xavi Alonso in symbiosis with the mischievousness of El Guaje (the Lad) Villa; the wit of Sergio Ramos with the intelligence of Sweet Iniesta and the saintliness of Casillas. An authentic demonstration of haute cuisine football.

As is customary at Babylon, and forgetting now about football –at last–, in this issue we have brought together a supreme council of specialists to tell us about the ins and outs of a culinary revolution that started in the 1970s. A true line up of ace players who some time ago conquered the world in their discipline. They will be accompanying us on this odyssey of our gastronomy, from the times of cooking pots to the era of deconstruction. An exclusive summary of the most important game for Spanish nouvelle cuisine. The table is ready.

ESCRIBO ESTAS LÍNEAS CON LA INTENCIÓN de no hablar de fútbol, ¡pero es imposible! La resaca del mundial todavía nos acompaña (literalmente). En este glorioso mes hemos aprendido que África nunca ha dejado de existir, que las vuvuzelas provienen de algún tipo de tortura tradicional y que Dios también comete errores. Y, ¿qué cosas ha aportado esta victoria a España, además de un tsunami de buenrrollismo, una estrella en la elástica nacional y un pico en las estadísticas de natalidad?

Para empezar, una gigantesca campaña de marketing con un coste mínimo. Este grupo ha conseguido dejar una brillante impronta en el imaginario colectivo. Recapitulemos: entrenador imperturbable, héroes invisibles del fútbol solidario, paciencia estoica contra el juego sucio, un final Disney con beso incluido… ¿podemos pedir más? Sí, porque esta gesta épica traerá consigo un previsible boom turístico, un crecimiento del PIB de hasta el 0,7% y una revalorización del 10% de los mercados financieros (según las previsiones más halagüeñas).

Es el triunfo de un bloque plural, sin complejos, sin fisuras, con muchos acentos pero un sentimiento idéntico. Que nadie se extrañe por ello. Al igual que la gastronomía, protagonista de este número, los contrastes han sido siempre nuestra seña de identidad. Hacer sencillo lo complejo y combinar las cualidades particulares sin alterar la armonía del conjunto es algo que nuestros chefs descubrían hace tres décadas en la llamada “revolución de la nueva cocina española”.

Ahora, nuestros deportistas lo han puesto en práctica. Varios idiomas, diferentes costumbres, una cultura común. La bravura de Xavi Alonso en simbiosis con la picardía del Guaje Villa; el salero de Sergio Ramos, con la inteligencia de Sweet Iniesta y la santidad de Casillas. Una autentica muestra de haute cuisine futbolística.

Como es tradición en Babylon y olvidándonos ya del fútbol -¡al fin!, en este número hemos reunido a un sanedrín de especialistas para contaros los entresijos de una revolución culinaria que comenzó en los años 70. Una verdadera alineación de cracks que conquistó hace tiempo el cetro mundial en su disciplina nos acompaña en la odisea de nuestra gastronomía, desde los tiempos de los pucheros hasta la era de la deconstrucción. Bulls and bullfighters The football philosopher (former Argentina coach) César Luis Menotti said at the World Cup in the United States that La Roja “is a team that has to decide whether it is the bull or the bullfighter.” The German daily paper Bild urged its national team to “take the bull by the horns” in the semi finals in South Africa, but by then the Spanish team had already made up its mind what it wanted

to be. Falling back yet again on the bullfighting vocabulary that we learnt in the last issue of Babylon, we’d like to dedicate a well deserved: “¡Olé, toreros!” to the Spanish team. Now all we need do is transfer this task well done on the playing field to the others we are facing, like providing employment and education for the young people of this World Champion generation.

echando mano del vocabulario taurino que aprendimos el pasado número, dedicamos a los jugadores de la selección un merecido: “¡Olé, toreros!”.

Ya solo hace falta trasladar este buen hacer del terreno de juego a aquellos otros en los que tanto nos jugamos, como el empleo y la educación de los jóvenes de esta generación campeona del mundo.

The selection is taken from the series On the road, migration without documents across Mexico, a multimedia work involving professionals from Argentina, El Salvador and Spain and covering the odyssey of the nearly 500,000 Latin Americans without papers who cross Mexico each year in search of the American Dream. The work of Óscar Martínez (reporter), Edu Ponces, Toni Arnau and Eduardo Solera (photographers), it won the Digital Journalism category at the 2nd edition of the Premio de Periodismo Joven La Pepa 2012 awards and has been published in book form with a prologue by photo journalist Javier Bauluz (see page 32).

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BEAUTIFUL CLIFFS at Zumaia, at the idyllic beach of Azkorri (País Vasco). Their two stratotypes (Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), geological fault lines that serve as a model for defining and recognizing the unity and limits of the different strata, have just been chosen as the best place in the world to study the period known in geologist speak as the Eocene.

This was the age on Earth, 55 million years ago, when some of the planet’s most important mountain ranges were formed, among them the Alps and the Himalayas. Stanley Finney, president of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), drove a Golden Spike into the ground at the foot of both lines. The spike symbolizes the global importance of the flysch (a sequence of rock formations that alternate between hard and softer layers) found in the province of Guipuzcoa.

Requiem for Saramago “Because it’s like nothing else”. That was how José Saramago replied to his friend Carlos Fuentes when the Mexican asked him why he had chosen to live on the island of Lanzarote in the Canaries. The Portuguese Nobel literature laureate arrived at his own “stone raft” in 1993, and couldn’t help falling in love at first sight with its landscape and its architecture, invented at much the same time by all round artist César Manrique (“When I returned from New York, I came with the intention of converting the island of my birth into one of the most beautiful places on the planet”). Saramago defended Lanzarote from the same enemies as his character Cipriano Algor faced in The Cave: from violent progress and totalitarian globalization. In the village of Tías, surrounded by great expanses of vines that look like waves of stone set in a lunar landscape, as in the photo, he founded his home and his soul. He died there in June, leaving Lanzarote forever without its shepherd.

On the island they still listen to, as the Portuguese writer once wrote, “the sighs from which probably the silence that precedes the silence of the world is made.”

LAST JUNE THE NEW management team at Altamira, the body responsible for the best known cave in the world, decided unanimously to admit “limited and controlled” access to the public. This means that after eight years of waiting people can once again admire the hundreds of prehistoric paintings to be found in the cave complex. While a scientific commission still has to give its definitive approval to the opening, everything points to 2011 being the year when the queues will form again to see what is often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic Art”. Located near the town of Santillana del Mar, the cave of Altamira houses the most important series of prehistoric paintings discovered until now: The bison, horses, hands and mysterious signs painted and engraved there represent part of the cultural expression of the inhabitants living in the cave 15,000 years ago. Ever since the hunter Modesto Cubillas discovered the cave by accident in 1868, hundreds of thousands of visitors have had the fortune to admire the enigmatic paintings during the periods in which the complex has been open. It was because of the growing number of visits that new microorganisms began to cause deterioration of the paintings, and the cave was forced to close on several occasions, the last in 2002. While we wait on the results of the evaluation, the president of the Cántabria autonomous region, Miguel Ángel Revilla, has already prepared the invitation for Obama to reopen the caves.

EL PASADO MES DE JUNIO el nuevo Patronato de Altamira, órgano responsable de la cueva prehistórica más conocida del mundo, decidió por unanimidad conceder el acceso “limitado y controlado” al público, que podrá admirar de nuevo, y tras ocho años de espera, los cientos de pinturas rupestres que albergan sus diferentes salas. A la espera de que una comisión de científicos apruebe definitivamente su apertura, todo indica a que en 2011 volverán las colas de espera para visitar la considerada como “Capilla Sixtina del Arte Paleolítico”. Situada en la localidad cántabra de Santillana del Mar, la Cueva de Altamira acoge el ciclo pictórico prehistórico más importante hallado hasta la actualidad: bisontes, caballos, manos o misteriosos signos, pintados y grabados, son parte de la expresión cultural de los habitantes que vivieron en la cueva hace 15.000 años. Desde que el cazador Modesto Cubillas descubriera por casualidad la cueva en 1868, cientos de miles de visitantes han tenido la fortuna de admirar las enigmáticas pinturas durante los periodos en los que se ha mantenido abierta. Como consecuencia de la masificación de visitas, nuevos microorganismos han ido deteriorando los dibujos y la cueva se ha visto obligada a cerrar en varias ocasiones, la última en 2002. Mientras se espera el resultado de la evaluación, el presidente de la Región Cántabra, Miguel Ángel Revilla, ya tiene preparada la invitación para que Obama reinaugure las cuevas.

BM: What is the main objective of the new Museo de la Evolución Humana in Burgos province?

JD: We want to show visitors the remains of the first humans to live in Europe, found in the Sierra de Atapuerca mountains, and to help them understand the history of human evolution.

BM: What are the jewels of the museum collection?

JD: Cranium No 5, Miguelón, of Homo Heidelbergensis and the pelvis Elvis that’s 500,000 years old.

BM: To give us an idea, let’s take a virtual tour through the museum.

JD: On the first floor we learn about how people work at an excavation site. On the second floor there is an explanation of human evolution in biological terms. On the third, we show cultural objects that man has been making, and on the last we find a cube that simulates the natural environment that has surrounded the life of mankind through history.

BM: ¿Con qué objetivo nace el Museo de la Evolución Humana de Burgos?

JD: Queremos mostrar a los visitantes los restos de los primeros humanos que poblaron Europa, hallados en la Sierra de Atapuerca, y ayudarles a comprender la historia de la evolución humana.

BM: ¿Cuáles son las joyas que alberga el museo?

JD: El cráneo número 5, Miguelón, del Homo heidelbergensis y la Pelvis Elvis de 500.000 años de antigüedad.

BM: ¿Podría hacernos un breve recorrido virtual por el museo?

JD: En la primera planta, conocemos cómo se trabaja en una excavación; en la segunda planta se explica la evolución humana en términos biológicos; en la tercera, mostramos los objetos culturales que el hombre ha ido construyendo y por último, nos encontramos con un cubo que simula el medio ambiente natural que ha rodeado a la vida de los hombres a lo largo de la historia.

Never the same water

THE EVERLASTING HERITAGE OF MÉRIDA RENEWS WITH THE TIMES. EL LEGADO ETERNO DE MÉRIDA SE RENUEVA CON LOS TIEMPOS WORDS BY CLAUDIO MARTÍN THE SUMMER SEASON, WITH THE CELEBRATION of its prestigious Festival de Teatro Clásico, helps dress up the city of Merida and submerges it in a magical dream that began more than 2,000 years ago. “The promise of the water” is the slogan for this 56th edition of the festival, a metaphor for “found in that well of living and unending water, as are the texts of the ancient Greek poets”, according to the director Francisco Suárez.

Visitors have until 29 August to dive into the classics wrapped up as they are in the historic Roman setting of Merida. It was in 1993 when the iconic theatre, built for Agrippa in 16 to 15 B.C, the amphitheatre from 8 B.C, dedicated to spectacular shows of gladiators and wild animals, and the Casa del Anfiteatro (Amphitheatre House) with its magnificent mosaics, were recognized as one of the most important and best preserved complexes of the Roman world when they were declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The same year the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano was opened, an indispensable complement to a visit to Emérita Augusta as the Romans called their city. Rafael Moneo used bricks as his material, imitating classic Roman construction. The same architect will be responsible for an extension on an adjoining site of 300 m2, which is scheduled to open in Autumn 2011. Before then we will be able to enjoy the first Holy Week in Mérida since the festival was recognized as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional, especially the Vía Crucis that is held at the amphitheatre. It’s a unique spectacle that is only matched by the one celebrated by the Pope in Rome on Good Friday. Mérida, always changing but never different, as the philosopher Heráclitus would say.

Hasta el 29 de agosto el visitante podrá zambullirse en los clásicos envuelto en el monumental conjunto emeritense. Fue en 1993 cuando el emblemático Teatro, encargado por Agripa en los años 16 y 15 a.C.; el Anfiteatro del año 8 a.C. dedicado a espectáculos con gladiadores y animales salvajes, o la Casa del Anfiteatro con sus magníficos mosaicos, pasaron a ser reconocidos como uno de los más importantes y mejor conservados conjuntos del mundo romano y fueron declarados Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco. Ese mismo año se inauguraría el Museo Nacional de Arte Romano, complemento indispensable en la visita de Emérita Augusta. Rafael Moneo utilizó el ladrillo como material recordando a las construcciones clásicas romanas.

El arquitecto será él mismo el encargado de su ampliación en un solar contiguo de 300 m2, cuya finalización se prevé para otoño de 2011. Antes podremos disfrutar de la primera Semana Santa que Mérida celebrará desde su reciente reconocimiento como Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional y disfrutar del Vía Crucis que se celebra en el Anfiteatro, un espectáculo único solo equiparable al que celebra el Papa en Roma durante el Viernes Santo. by Pedro Pos Ever since presenter Pepe Navarro started the genre of late night shows in Spain in 1995 with his programme Esta noche cruzamos el Mississippi (Tonight we’re crossing the Mississippi) followed by the smash hit Crónicas Marcianas (Martian Chronicles) with Javier Sardá, there have been various unsuccessful attempts to survive more than a season in the most outrageous of the television time zones. The only who has succeeded until now has been the showman from La Sexta channel, Andreu Buenafuente, who for several years has kept more than 500,000 spectators in suspense every night. But Buenafuente has now ended up with true ‘competitor’, his friend Santi Millán, the new presenter of the late show on Cuatro, Guau (Woof). “We didn’t set out with the idea of fighting for audiences with Buenafuente, nor to revive the genre, but with the aim of reaching out to a public that had lost their nights with the disappearance of the late night shows and had hooked up instead with social networking,” says the Catalan actor, presenter, humorist and businessman who made his name with the public at large in the popular series Siete Vidas (Seven Lives). It’s the first time that Santi Millán has faced up to the demanding task of rattling on every night and making people laugh. “Humour is important in this job, a way of life, although it is not always easy to be the ‘funny one’, especially those days when the audiences are not good. So far the ratings have been with him and the formula of a dose of the outrageous, optimism and freakishness offered on Guau is working. The fiesta continues from September.

El único que lo había conseguido hasta ahora era el showman de La Sexta, Andreu Buenafuente, quien mantiene en vilo -desde hace ya varios años- a más de 500.000 espectadores cada noche. Pero a Buenafuente le acaba de salir un digno ‘competidor’, su amigo Santi Millán, el nuevo presentador del late show de Cuatro, Guau. “No veníamos con la idea de luchar en audiencias con Buenafuente ni de renovar el género, sino con el objetivo de llegar a un público que había perdido las noches con la desaparición de los late night y que está enganchada a las redes sociales”, subraya el actor, presentador, humorista y empresario catalán, que se dio a conocer al gran público en la famosa serie Siete Vidas.

Es la primera vez que Santi Millán se enfrenta al exigente reto de estar todas las noches de buen rollo y hacer reír a la gente y es que “en este trabajo es importante el humor como forma de vida, aunque no es fácil ser siempre ‘el gracioso’, sobre todo cuando hay días en que las audiencias no son buenas”. Hasta el momento los shares han acompañado y la fórmula con dosis de desmadre, optimismo y frikismo que propone Guau está funcionando. La fiesta continúa a partir de septiembre.

Francis Bacon THE EYES OF JAVIER BAULUZ (born Oviedo, 1960) are taking a rest from horror. No, he hasn’t stopped working, understanding –and denouncing– the world with his photos. (“Journalism is not just a profession, but also a vocation”). But, allegorically he has put aside the camera with which he has travelled to the most convulsive corners of the world. The places where things happen that we see on the news.

The revolts in the Rif, Christmas ‘92 in Sarajevo, the genocide in Rwanda, the conflict in Chiapas, Palestine, Kosovo… Now, the only Spanish Pulitzer Prize winner – awarded for his testimony of Rwanda in ‘94, together with his companions from Associated Press – runs Periodismo Humano (Humane Journalism), a non-profit making digital media where the information is “focused on those who don’t have a place in the media, to those nobodies Eduardo Galeano speaks about, those people who are worth less than the bullet that kills them”. His photographs have been published on the most prestigious front pages of the world. But Javier only gives importance “to the establishment of an independent journalism, true and honest”. Sounds crazy, perhaps it is: “But in this world there are many mad people who don’t want their news to be goods or a business, but a service and public property.”

LOS OJOS DE JAVIER BAULUZ (Oviedo, 1960) están descansando del horror. No, no ha dejado de trabajar, de comprender -y denunciar- el mundo con sus fotos (“El periodismo no sólo es una profesión, sino una vocación”), pero alegóricamente ha guardado la cámara con la que ha recorrido los puntos más convulsos del mundo. Los lugares donde ocurren las cosas que vemos en los informativos.

Las revueltas del Rif, la Navidad del 92 en Sarajevo, el genocidio en Ruanda, el conflicto de Chiapas, Palestina, Kosovo… Ahora, el único Premio Pulitzer español -lo ganó por su testimonio de Ruanda en el 94 junto a sus compañeros de Associated Pressdirige Periodismo Humano, un medio digital sin ánimo de lucro donde la información “enfoca a los que no tienen sitio en los medios, a esos nadies de los que habla Eduardo Galeano, esas personas que valen menos que la bala que los mata”. Ha publicado sus fotografías en las cabeceras más prestigiosas del planeta, pero Javier sólo le da a importancia “a la creación de un periodismo independiente, veraz y honesto”. Parece una locura, quizás lo sea: “Pero en el mundo hay muchos más locos que quieren que la información no sea una mercancía y un negocio, sino un servicio y un bien público”.

BABYLON MAGAZINE: What’s your opinion about the type of information that’s provided these days by the news media, from an ethical point of view?

JAVIER BAULUZ. Unfortunately, a large part of the media has lost it way and no longer follows the priority objective of news. What’s most important now is making a profit, that “everything’s OK for the money”. Earning money is legitimate, but the problem comes when the butcher starts selling rotten meat to boost business.

BM: Do you believe that humane journalism and ethics are compatible with the giant media organizations today?

JB: The same as with firefighters, doctors, notaries or any profession, it’s possible. It should also be in journalism. It’s only a case of keeping to the ethic parameters that should be practiced. What we are trying to achieve at Periodismo Humano is that as journalists we regain control of our occupation. We want to go back to the origins of the profession, for it to be a public service to citizens, to people, and not at the service of political, financial and private interests.

BM: Ever since you photographed those protestors in Hyde Park in ‘81, how have you evolved as a journalist

JB: I think I’ve evolved very little. I keep the same ethical and professional principles that I started with. I have tried to practice them throughout my life. What could have varied are the circumstances. Never before has the media been so controlled from within. Today there is more concentration. That means less voices, although it appears there are more.

BM: Throughout your career as a photo journalist, what has been your most raw experience?

JB: Unfortunately, there have been quite a few. From Rwanda, with one and a half million people dying literally in front of your camera, to the city of Sarajevo, besieged and bombarded, and seeing how the attackers shot at children or people going to fetch water, and at the journalists themselves.

BM: In Rwanda, at any moment did you feel like Paul, the main character in the film Hotel Rwanda, when he sees all the westerners getting out and leaving the country adrift ahead of the massacre.

JB: At least they recognize it now. The UN “shit itself” in Rwanda, The same happened in Bosnia, in Sbrenitza, as in many other places, for three reasons. For private interests, for a lack of valour, but above all for a lack of demand from public opinion in democratic countries, those where we fortunately still have the right to shout.

And we didn’t shout, or not loud enough.

BABYLON MAGAZINE: ¿Qué opinas sobre el tipo de información que se hace hoy en día en los medios de comunicación, desde un punto de vista ético?

JAVIER BAULUZ: Desgraciadamente, una gran cantidad de medios han perdido el rumbo y ya no persiguen el objetivo prioritario de la información. Lo más importante en esta época es el ánimo de lucro, el “todo vale por la pasta”. Ganar dinero es muy legítimo, pero el problema llega cuando el carnicero empieza a vender carne podrida para hacer negocio.

BM: ¿Crees que el periodismo humano y la ética son compatibles con las grandes empresas de comunicación de hoy en día?

JB: Igual que los bomberos, los médicos, los notarios o en cualquier otra profesión eso es posible, en el periodismo también debería serlo. Se trata solamente de cumplir con los parámetros éticos que se deben practicar. Nosotros lo que intentamos en Periodismo Humano es que los periodistas recuperemos el control de nuestro oficio.

Queremos volver a los orígenes de la profesión, para que sea un servicio público al ciudadano, a las personas, y no al servicio de intereses políticos, económicos y particulares.

BM: Desde que fotografiaste en el 81 a aquellos manifestantes en Hyde Park, ¿cómo has evolucionado como periodista y persona?

JB: Creo que he evolucionado muy poco. Sigo manteniendo los mismos principios éticos y profesionales que cuando empecé. He intentado practicarlos durante toda mi vida, y lo que puede haber variado son las circunstancias. Nunca como ahora los medios de comunicación habían estado tan controlados internamente. Ahora existe una mayor concentración, por lo tanto menos voces, aunque parezca que hay muchas.

BM: A lo largo de tu carrera como periodista gráfico, ¿cuál ha sido tu experiencia más descarnada?

JB: Desgraciadamente, ha habido bastantes.

Desde Ruanda, con un millón y medio de personas muriéndose literalmente delante de tu cámara, hasta la ciudad de Sarajevo, sitiada y bombardeada, y viendo cómo se disparaba contra los niños o la gente que iba a buscar agua, o contra los propios periodistas.

BM: En Ruanda, el algún momento te sentiste como Paul, el protagonista de la película Hotel Rwanda, cuando ve cómo todos los occidentales se marchan dejando el país a la deriva, antes de la matanza.

JB: Por los menos, ahora ya lo reconocen. La ONU “la cagó” en Ruanda, igual que en Bosnia, igual que en Sbrenitza, como en muchos otros lugares, por tres razones. Por intereses propios, por falta de valor, pero sobre todo por falta de una exigencia de la opinión pública en los países democráticos, donde por suerte todavía tenemos el derecho a gritar, y no gritamos, o no lo suficiente.

WITNESSES OF CRIME Not all westerners abandoned Rwanda in 1994 when the fight to the death began between the Hutus and the Tutsis. Some remained. Among them was Javier Bauluz, then 34 years old, together with other professionals from different international media. “As some of my work colleagues told me, we are always there, we always stay so that nobody can say they didn’t know, or that they hadn’t been told”. A year after that hell, when Javier was in Chiapas working with Médecins Sans Frontières, he received a call telling him that along with his AP colleagues he had been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for their photographs of the genocide in Rwanda. The people they portrayed there with their cameras appeared for the first and last time in a photo.

“They are those who never appear in the media, except when many of them die at the same time, or when they form part of a media spectacle that makes money.”

No todos los occidentales se marcharon de Ruanda en 1994, cuando empezó la lucha a muerte entre los hutus y los tutsis.

Algunos se quedaron. Entre ellos, estaba Javier Bauluz, a sus 34 años, junto a otros profesionales de diferentes medios internacionales. “Como me dijeron algunos colegas de profesión, nosotros siempre estamos ahí, siempre nos quedamos para que nadie pueda decir que no lo sabía, o que no se había contado”. Un año después de aquel infierno, cuando Javier estaba en Chiapas colaborando para Médicos sin Fronteras, le llamaron para decirle que había recibido el Premio Pulitzer junto a sus colegas de AP por sus fotografías del genocidio ruandés.

Las personas que ellos retrataron allí con sus cámaras salieron por primera y última vez en una foto. “Son los que nunca aparecen en los medios, salvo cuando se mueren muchos a la vez, o cuando forman parte del espectáculo mediático que produce beneficios”.

Rebirth of the cloverleaf

ONE OF THE LEGENDARY BRANDS OF SPANISH BIKING RETURNS VUELVE OSSA, UNA UNA DE LAS MARCAS MÍTICAS DEL MOTOR ESPAÑOL. WORDS BY CRISTO LIEBOWITZ

THE RENAISSANCE OF A FORGOTTEN BRAND is always good news for nostalgia lovers. Ossa, one of the jewels of the Spanish motorcycle scene, is returning to the road 25 years after it disappeared. The revival of the legendary company is due to the efforts of a group of investors led by Jordi Cuxart and Alejandro Laplaza. With a budget of approximately six million euros they have resuscitated a Spanish brand that was a leader in the sector for several decades. As happened with another company that disappeared from the scene and then reappeared, Bultaco in 1999, Ossa (Orpheo Sincronic Sociedad Anónima) is banking strongly on making up for lost time since the ‘80s. It was then that the appearance of Japanese bikes, among other factors, relegated Spanish manufacturers to the second division. Many of them ended up closing their factories, apart from a few exceptions such as the iconic Montesa, which was acquired by Japanese giant Honda. Ossa Factory, as the new company that is inheriting the famous cloverleaf symbol has been called, is aiming at the motoring world and, specifically, at trials competition. Its revolutionary model, the TR280i, backed by world champion Marc Colomer – their official tester –, has already demonstrated that the Catalonia manufacturer is taking things seriously. As well as announcing the company’s participation in the world championships with its own team, Ossa has also said it will have a new road model ready for 2012. All this without forgetting the lovers of retro, for whom they have created a new line of vintage fashion inspired by the competition and with the four-leaf clover as its logo. We hope this time it will bring the company luck…

EL RENACER DE UNA MARCA olvidada siempre es una buena noticia para los nostálgicos. Ossa, una de las joyas del motociclismo español, vuelve a la carretera 25 años después de su desaparición. El renacer de la mítica compañía se debe a la apuesta de un grupo de inversores, encabezados por Jordi Cuxart y Alejandro Laplaza, que con un presupuesto aproximado de 6 millones de euros, han resucitado a una de las marcas españolas líderes del sector durante décadas.

Como ya hiciera la también desaparecida Bultaco en 1999, Ossa (Orpheo Sincronic Sociedad Anónima) ha apostado fuerte para recuperar el tiempo perdido desde los 80. Entonces, la aparición del mercado japonés, entre otros factores, relegó a un segundo plano a los constructores españoles, que en la mayoría de los casos se vieron obligados a cerrar sus fábricas (salvo excepciones como la mítica Montesa, adquirida por el gigante japonés Honda). La apuesta de Ossa Factory, como se ha bautizado a la empresa heredera del trébol, está orientada al mundo del motor y, más concretamente, al trial de competición. Su revolucionario modelo, la TR280i, apadrinada por el campeón mundial Marc Colomer - su probador oficial-, ya ha demostrado que el constructor catalán va en serio. Además de anunciar su participación en el campeonato del mundo con su propio equipo, Ossa también ha anunciado la creación de un modelo de carretera para 2012. Todo ello sin olvidarse de los amantes de lo retro, para los que han creado una línea de moda vintage inspirada en la competición y con el trébol de cuatro hojas como buque insignia. Esperemos que esta vez les traiga suerte…

THE CRISIS WIPES OUT THE LAST SPANISH BOOKSHOP IN THE BIG APPLE. LA CRISIS EXTINGUE A LA ÚLTIMA LIBRERÍA EN ESPAÑOL DE LA GRAN MANZANA. WORDS BY LUCÍA MANRIQUE THE HEART OF NEW YORK, Manhattan, has lost its last bookshop dedicated to literature written in Spanish. It’s been a long while since there has been such bad news in the flourishing world of Cervantes’ language in the USA, but in June Calíope – as the shop run by Dominican César González, who now sells his books in the street, was called – closed its doors to the public. The reason for the closure is perfectly well known to everybody: the Crisis.

Books by Neruda, García Márquez and Vargas Llosa were no longer sufficient to pay the high rent of a bookshop that also served as a meeting point for Latin American culture in the big Apple.

Back in 2007, New York bookshops specializing in Spanish literature were already in danger of extinction. That was when the two main bookstores in the city dedicated to selling books in the language of Cervantes, Macondo and Lectorum closed. (At the time there was no crisis, but the reasons for the closure of the businesses were similar). The news caused considerable public commotion, and Calíope remained alone on the island of Manhattan.

Now reality has once again surpassed fiction, and although the United States remains the non-Spanish speaking country where the most books written in Spanish are sold, the market is still not strong enough, at the moment, to guarantee the existence of a bookstore at the centre of the world.

EL CORAZÓN DE NUEVA YORK, Manhattan, ha perdido a su última librería consagrada a la literatura en español. Hacía mucho tiempo que no se producía una mala noticia en la frondosa actualidad del idioma de Cervantes en EE.UU., pero desde el pasado mes de junio, Calíope -así se llamaba el establecimiento regentado por el dominicano César González, que ahora vende los libros en la calle- ya no abre sus puertas al público. La culpable del cierre es perfectamente conocida por todos: Crisis.

Los libros de Neruda, García Márquez y Vargas Llosa dejaron de ser suficientes para pagar el alto alquiler de un espacio que servía, además, como punto de encuentro de la cultura latinoamericana en la Gran Manzana.

En 2007, las librerías neoyorquinas especializadas en la literatura en español ya habían entrado en riesgo de extinción. Fue entonces cuando cerraron (entonces no había crisis, pero las causas de la clausura del negocio fueron similares) las dos principales librerías de la ciudad dedicadas a la venta de libros en el idioma de Cervantes, Macondo y Lectorum. La noticia produjo entonces una notable conmoción en la opinión pública, y Calíope se quedó sola en la isla de Manhattan. Ahora, la realidad ha superado de nuevo a la ficción, y aunque EE.UU. sigue siendo el país no hispanohablante donde más libros escritos en español se venden, el mercado todavía no es lo suficientemente fuerte, de momento, como para garantizar la existencia de una librería en el centro del mundo.

BM: What does the Hirsch Conjecture express?

FS: If a polyhedron can be defined by N equations in D variables, it should be possible to go from one vertex to another in N-D steps.

BM: And in language that is comprehensible to humans?

FS: It deals with polyhedrons, but not threedimensional ones where we all live; but ones that can have millions of dimensions.

BM: Does mathematics resemble any other language?

FS: BIt has always been very introspective to a certain point, like philosophy.

hat do 900 international students speaking Spanish in the summer in Santander and 200 European teachers who become students from 3 to 7 weeks in the UIMP Campus in Cantabria have in common?

Spanish as a foreign language (ELE). Spanish as a foreign language represents 10% of the Spanish GNI. Humanities, in its applied form, has now become an asset. The proof is in the 200 applications that the UIMP has received for their Master ELE. Crisis, what crisis? For the last 75 years the UIMP has had one of its campuses totally dedicated to ELE, and has added in the last 6 years a Master in ELE for the European Association of Higher Education; and in the last 4 years, an Official Masters in ELE for Teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes (IC).

Thirty-five new students share the campus and their experiences with the thirty-two students from the former two-year course: they will need two summers to acquire the 60 credits needed. The students of this course starting in July will be the 4th set of students to graduate from this official course run exclusively in Santander.

Qué tienen en común 900 estudiantes internacionales reunidos en verano en Santander que hablan español y 200 profesores europeos en activo que se convierten en alumnos entre tres y siete semanas en el Campus de la UIMP en Cantabria? El Español como Lengua Extranjera (ELE). La enseñanza del ELE aporta aproximadamente el 10% del PIB español. Las Humanidades en su vertiente más aplicada constituyen un valor seguro, y se nota. Prueba de ello han sido las más de 200 solicitudes que ha recibido la UIMP para el Máster ELE. ¿Quién dijo crisis? La UIMP dedica uno de sus Campus al ELE desde hace 75 años; los últimos 6, con un Máster ELE en el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior y 4, como Máster Oficial de formación de profesores de ELE, en colaboración con el Instituto Cervantes (IC). Treinta y cinco alumnos recién ingresados comparten campus y experiencias con 32 del bienio anterior: invertirán dos veranos para completar 60 créditos. A GASTRONOMIC MANIFESTO

A

mong the great riches of current Spanish gastronomy, what is probably the most striking is its sheer variety.

There’s a stor y about a former royal chef who said there was hardly a district in Spain that didn’t have its own culinar y speciality that was worthy of being served at a palace table. In my opinion, from the gastronomic point of view Spain has enough riches and possibilities to be considered much more than a countr y, more of a continent. It’s difficult to find such a quantity of features, signs of identity and differentiating elements in gastronomy in such a relatively small geographical area as ours, just as it is with histor y and with traditions. This confirms the old theor y of Gregorio Marañón in his Essay apology on Spanish cooking. According to this, peoples with great artistic feelings, like those from the Mediterranean, have an excellent cuisine, while the more industrialized civilizations only have exceedingly simple ways of eating.

The key point is to establish a balance between traditional and creative cooking. The great secret of the success of Spanish cooking in the world is that it has been able to overcome old ways of thinking, preserving the best of the old ovens and adding creativity. Ever ybody wants to tr y the culinar y giants of dishes that have always been there, but also the creative ones of Adriá, Arzak, Berasategui or Adúriz. They know how to conserve the certain ritualistic character of eating that has its time, its customs and its mannerisms. It is not just a case of what you eat but how you eat it.

Just as important as the consolidation of our top c in the world elite is the presence of our top products in the leading world markets. We should be taking advantage of the noticeable penetration of Spanish restaurateurs abroad to start the next phase: the biggest possible promotion of the products.

And to achieve this, the tapa is a basic tool. It’s a concept that is firmly rooted in, yet not sufficiently related to the Spanish culture that keeps it alive. I also think it’s important that the next generation, the one that will follow the current grand masters, starts to find a niche beyond our borders. Spanish cooking today, the cooking of freedom as I like to call it, is now fully recognized internationally. But we have to keep persevering to make sure this phenomenon is not just a flash in the pan and that it gains strength through the products and recipes.

ntre las grandes riquezas de la gastronomía española actual probablemente la más llamativa sea la variedad.

Cuentan de un antiguo cocinero real quien señaló que apenas existe en España una comarca que no disponga de una especialidad culinaria digna de figurar en las mesas de los palacios. En mi opinión, España alberga, desde el punto de vista gastronómico, suficientes riquezas y posibilidades como para considerarla mucho más que un país, casi un continente. Difícilmente en una extensión geográfica de tamaño relativamente reducido, como ocurre con la nuestra, pueden encontrarse tal cantidad de rasgos, de señas de identidad y de elementos diferenciales en lo gastronómico, al igual que ocurre con la historia o con las tradiciones mismas. Esto confirma la vieja teoría de Gregorio Marañón en su Ensayo apologético sobre la cocina española, según el cual, los pueblos de gran sentido artístico, como los mediterráneos, poseen una cocina excelente, mientras que las civilizaciones preferentemente industriales sólo exhiben modos de alimentación de notoria sencillez.

La clave consiste en establecer un equilibrio entre la cocina tradicional y la creativa. El gran secreto del triunfo mundial de la cocina de España es que ha sabido superar esquemas del pasado, preservando lo mejor de los fogones antiguos y añadiendo la creatividad. Todo el mundo quiere probar los monumentos culinarios de siempre, pero también los platos creativos de Adriá, Arzak, Berasategui o Adúriz. Se ha sabido conservar cierto carácter litúrgico de la comida que tiene su tiempo, sus ritos y sus maneras. No se trata tan sólo de lo que se come sino de cómo se come.

Tan importante como la consolidación de nuestros grandes cocineros en la élite mundial es la presencia de nuestros grandes productos en los principales mercados del planeta.

Deberíamos aprovechar la notable penetración internacional de los restauradores españoles para iniciar la fase siguiente que es la máxima difusión de los productos y, para ello, una herramienta fundamental es la tapa, un concepto plenamente arraigado pero no lo suficientemente relacionado con la cultura española, en la que se sustenta. Y también me parece importante que la siguiente generación, la posterior a los actuales grandes maestros, empiece también a hacerse un hueco fuera de nuestras fronteras. La cocina española actual, que es la cocina de la libertad, como a mí me gusta llamarla, tiene el máximo reconocimiento internacional, pero debemos seguir perseverando para que este fenómeno no sea flor de un día y se consolide a través de los productos y las recetas.

CHRONICLE OF A COUP D´ÉTAT

I

t all starts with the first round table organised by the magazine Club de Gourmets in Madrid, 1976. Renowned representatives of the French Nouvelle Cousine such as Paul Boucuse and Raymond Oliver attended this meeting; great gastronomy critiques like Víctor de la Serna and Néstor Luján; the current president of the Royal Academy of Gastronomy, Rafael Ansón, and the most important Spanish chefs such as Pedro Subijana, Luis Betánica or Manuel Llano Gorostiza, they were all there. Subijana and I were hearing people claiming that there was something more superior than eating for the sake of eating, and that was eating for the sublimation of the senses, and eating as a form of art. After this meeting I told Pedro that we had to work for our cuisine and for our culture; and that was the birth of the new Basque cuisine movement. Thus, the new Basque cuisine was beginning to be known in the whole of Spain, then it was Catalan cuisine followed by the rest of the regions. We were all searching for new techniques based on different roots. With the arrival of Ferran Adriá, and his imaginative techniques, our cuisine was propelled to the international arena.

A esta reunión asistieron representantes de la Nouvelle Cousine francesa como Paul Boucuse y Raymond Oliver, grandes críticos gastronómicos como Víctor de la Serna y Néstor Luján, el actual presidente de la Real Academia Española de Gastronomía, Rafael Ansón, y los chefs españoles más importantes, entre otros, Pedro Subijana, Luis Betánica o Manuel Llano Gorostiza. El hecho es que Subijana y yo empezamos a oír hablar de un concepto superior al de comer por comer, que era el de comer por sublimación de sentidos y comer por arte. Tras esta reunión, le dije a Pedro que teníamos que trabajar por la cocina y por nuestra cultura y de ahí nace el movimiento de la nueva cocina vasca. Así, se empieza a conocer la Nueva Cocina Vasca en toda España, después la catalana y finalmente el resto de las cocinas regionales. Todos fuimos buscando nuevas técnicas sobre raíces diferentes. Luego llegaría Ferran Adriá, quien con sus técnicas imaginativas e impresionantes ha dado el impulso internacional a nuestra cocina.

hef Teodoro Bardají Mas (born 1882, Binéfar, Huesca – died Madrid, 1958) is regarded as the father of modern Spanish gastronomy. Bardají fed in France on the knowledge that later allowed him to carr y out the difficult task of revitalizing the decadent Spanish gastronomy of the time, dominated by an excess of all things French. He censured the use of French terms and ‘Hispanified’ culinar y phrases; spread the word and vindicated the work of the classic Spanish cooks, as well as the foods, stews, and popular sweet dishes. He created a cuisine based on the tradition of the rural world while realizing the importance of science: “You have to have knowledge of chemistr y to know the mixes that are enjoyable and those that are a turn off… To be a chemist, but not to adulterate, to use it correctly”.

THE DISSIDENT

n 14 May 2008, the newspapers published a bombshell about Spanish nouvelle cuisine cooking. After decades of work crowned with success the first real dissident appeared. Santi Santamaría, chef at the Michelín three star restaurant Can Faba, spoke out critically about: a) The excessive media attention given to the new cooks, b) the problem that the use of methyl cellulose in their dishes supposedly represents for public health. “Can we feel proud about a cuisine, supported by Ferran Adrià and his followers, who fill their dishes with gelling agents and emulsifiers from the laborator y?” he asked. A week later 800 Spanish chefs stepped for ward in defence of avant garde cuisine, and shortly after wards the Ministr y of Health and the Spanish Agency for Food Safety did the same. Santamaría was left on his own.

Una semana después, 800 chefs españoles salieron en defensa de la cocina de vanguardia, y poco después el Ministerio de Sanidad y la Agencia Española de Seguridad Alimentaria hicieron lo mismo.

esign has played different roles in producing utensils and gastronomic products, in creating interiors for restaurants, and in communicating all of these phenomena in a good way. > Ferran Adrià has broken moulds, but in general all the chefs have good criteria when it comes to working with designers on a service plate or creating the interior of a restaurant. The level of design in restaurants is very high in Spain. > Being a perfectionist is to think about everything and to do things well, Good chefs are perfectionists, and good designers are too. > To be competitive you have to take design into account. It’s a tool that gives coherence to the project and also helps communicate it well. > I had the good fortune to eat at el Bulli, and truly the 32 dishes were 32 surprises. But also surprising was that the environment was very traditional; a table, plates and cutlery like you can find in any house. What was really technical and new was in the kitchen.

Los buenos cocineros son detallistas y los buenos diseñadores también. > Para ser competitivo hay que contar con el diseño, es una herramienta para dar coherencia al proyecto y también para comunicarlo bien. > Tuve la suerte de comer en El Bulli y realmente los 32 platos fueron 32 sorpresas, pero sorprendentemente el entorno era muy tradicional: una mesa, platos y cubiertos como puedes encontrar en cualquier casa. Lo realmente técnico y nuevo estaba en la cocina.

irst of all you have to be careful about the setting. That’s why I give great importance to a two way circulation system, one giving access to the clients and the other to the restaurant staff. The crockery and cutlery are as important as the interior design itself. Crockery has to be impeccable and complement the decoration. A table has to surprise; it’s the preamble to the great moment of tasting.

n primer lugar se trata de cuidar el entorno. Para ello doy gran importancia a la doble circulación, por un lado el acceso para los clientes y por otro al personal del restaurante. La vajilla y la cubertería son tan importantes como el propio interiorismo. La vajilla ha de ser impecable, cómplice de la decoración, y una mesa tiene que sorprender: es el preámbulo del gran momento de la degustación.

SPACE A luxury is having space, creating a lobby bar area to welcome clients. From the moment they enter an upmarket restaurant you have to get them participating in the exclusiveness of the place. The privacy of the tables is a maxim for offering comfort to diners.

SOUND You have to avoid silence. Silence can be as awkward or even more so than sound… which is why my way of seeing it is that you should create a relaxed atmosphere that allows us to maintain a conversation without hearing what’s happening beyond.

FURNITURE When it comes to choosing the materials for the restaurant, I think of fine woods, leather, metals, and brass… lacquered glass, fabrics with a very natural weft; the maxim, give the space texture.

LIGHT The light should be warm and regulated, with a point of light that allows us to appreciate the work of art in a good signature dish.

One of his teachers was Martín Berasategui. In 2009 the head chef of the restaurant Calima received the National Gastronomy Award. His cuisine is based on low-temperature cooking and on creations using nitrogen.

Arzak attended the prestigious Hotel Business School Schwezerische Hotelfachschule Luzern (Suizerland). In the year 2000 she was considered the best chef in Europe and is now the chef of the restaurant Arzak. Her cuisine is techno-emotional.

Self taught but influenced by Ferran Adrià or Sergi Ariola. Jordi Cruz is the youngest chef in the history of Spain to be awarded a Michelin star and is the chef of the restaurants l’Àngle and Àbac. His speciality: La ‘Coca’ de caballa mediterránea. (Mediterranean mackerel).

Top training They had the opportunity to learn from the best teachers without leaving their country and trained their palates and techniques on the best gastronomy schools´ kitchen stoves.

Interracial They follow in the wake of their teachers and travel abroad to show their dishes and most innovative techniques. There are frequent meetings with foreign chefs to try new and more exotic combinations.

Peripheral location All of them are head chefs and most of them manage their own restaurants. They prefer to be based in locations away from city centres, in pleasant places surrounded by wide open spaces.

Media attention The spotlights follow every movement of their pans, the use of nitrogen or the most unexpected combinations. They understand marketing and move through conferences and master classes like a fish in water.

he only thing that suggests Eduard Punset (born Barcelona, 1936) is not 20 years old is his exterior look. Inside, it seems he has just started studying law at university. This Catalan, a man full of life and simple tastes, is a sort of flesh and bone version of I-Ching, the Chinese oracle who the Emperor Fu Hsi started to write about thousands of years ago tr ying to imitate the Universe. The replies that Punset gives, however, are neither pills nor placebos. Nor are his books the Prozac that floods the bookshops of half the world, those manuals for living that sometimes we see tucked under the arms of passengers waiting at an airport. The most respected and listened to disseminator of science in the countr y set off five years ago on a return journey to knowledge, and with his latest book he has finished the trilogy about happiness, love and power of the mind that sums up all his reflections. In a way Eduard wanted to learn about himself in order to teach others how to do it. The method doesn’t allow for reasonable doubt. His only guide is science.

BM: To know is to remember?

EP: It’s one of the few things that Plato was right about. Today we know that memor y is fundamental to human existence in the sense that conditions accumulated from the past determine our vision of the present. When it comes to imagining the future we are also incapable of doing it without using stories from the past.

BM: Are we condemned to be free?

EP: We are programmed to be unique. What happens is that this programming can be affected by individual experience; what’s around us. There was a first scientific progression on this theor y when the so called “depression gene” was discovered to be responsible for this mental illness. In the first part of the experiment, when this was confirmed, the reductionists applauded, saying: “We were right”. But in the second part the experiment showed that this gene might not express itself in a pleasant ambience. So, all the others applauded, saying that individual experience is important when it comes to taking decisions.

BM: Nothing is black and white then…

EP: The big debate has been breached with the experiment with ta xi drivers in London.

They have demonstrated that the constant effort to expand the memor y through the assimilation of thousands of street names ended up causing an extension of the hippocampus, the part of the brain that looks after the filing of our memories.

Since then we know that we are programmed, but that we are unique in that our individual experience has an effect on this programming. And that opens up unexpected, unpredictable and unsuspected areas not only in the field of education, but also in the business world.

BM: So, if the brain can be modified, could a Gandhi become a Hitler, or vice versa?

EP: At the moment we have to admit that the possibilities of literally changing the brain of a person are much greater than we thought before. In the field of science fiction, I have no doubt there will come a time when we can increase the levels of compassion or altruism in a person by working on certain circuits in the brain.

o único que sugiere que Eduard Punset (Barcelona, 1936) no tiene veinte años es su aspecto exterior. Por dentro, aún parece que acaba de entrar a estudiar Derecho en la Universidad. Este catalán vitalista y de gustos sencillos es una especie de I-Ching de carne y hueso, el oráculo chino que comenzó a escribir hace miles de años el emperador Fu Hsi tratando de imitar el Universo.

Sin embargo, las respuestas que ofrece Punset no son pastillas ni placebos. Sus libros tampoco son el prozac que inunda las librerías de medio mundo, esos manuales para vivir que algunas veces vemos bajo el brazo de los pasajeros que esperan en algún aeropuerto. El divulgador científico más respetado y escuchado del país emprendió hace un lustro un viaje de ida y vuelta hacia el conocimiento, y con su último libro acaba de completar la trilogía sobre la felicidad, el amor y el poder de la mente que resume todas sus reflexiones. De algún modo, Eduard ha querido conocerse a sí mismo para enseñar a los demás cómo hacerlo. El método no admite dudas razonables. Su única guía es la ciencia.

BM: ¿Conocer es recordar?

EP: Es una de las pocas cosas en que Platón tenía razón. Hoy sabemos que la memoria es fundamental en la existencia humana en el sentido de que las condiciones acumuladas en el pasado determinan nuestra visión del presente, y a la hora de imaginar el futuro también somos incapaces de hacerlo sin confabular el pasado.

BM: ¿Estamos condenados a ser libres?

EP: Estamos programados para ser únicos. Lo que ocurre es que sobre esa programación puede incidir la experiencia individual, nuestro entorno. Hubo un primer adelanto científico sobre esta teoría cuando se descubrió el llamado “gen de la depresión” como responsable de esta enfermedad mental. En la primera parte del experimento, cuando se comprobó esto, los reduccionistas aplaudieron diciendo: “teníamos razón”. Pero el experimento descubrió, en la segunda parte, que este gen podía no expresarse en un ambiente amable.

Entonces, aplaudieron todos los demás, diciendo que la experiencia individual también tiene su importancia a la hora de tomar decisiones.

BM: Nada es blanco ni negro entonces…

EP: El gran debate se ha zanjado con el experimento de los taxistas de Londres. Se ha demostrado que el esfuerzo constante por ampliar la memoria mediante la simulación de miles de nombres de calles acaba incidiendo en la ampliación del hipocampo, el órgano cerebral encargado de archivar la memoria. Desde entonces sabemos que estamos programados, pero que somos únicos en la medida que nuestra experiencia individual incide sobre esta programación, y eso abre campos inusitados, imprevisibles e insospechados no solo en el campo de la educación, sino también en el mundo empresarial.

BM: Entonces, si el cerebro se puede modificar, ¿un Gandhi puede llegar a ser un Hitler, y viceversa?

EP: Hoy por hoy tenemos que admitir que las posibilidades de cambiar literalmente el cerebro de una persona son mucho mayores de lo que pensábamos antes, y en el campo de la ciencia ficción yo no tengo ninguna duda de que llegará un momento en que podremos aumentar el grado de compasión o de altruismo de una persona incidiendo sobre determinados circuitos cerebrales.

e can’t remember the name of his favourite opera. It is the only genre of music he listens to, apart from the different symphonies of nature, usually at his refuge in the village of Fonteta in the province of Gerona. That is also where he writes, accompanied by his dog Dar win. On the other hand Eduard Punset is capable of explaining in total clarity each and ever y one of his theories of the world. He is not a journalist, nor a scientist, nor an official member of the Nobel Prize committee. But the Catalan has interviewed on his public television programme, Redes (Networks) most of the key male and female scientists of the last few decades.

From Hamilton O. Smith, one of the creators of the human gene map, to Philip Zimbardo, the ideologist in the famous Stanford prison experiment, and Jane Goodall, the expert on primates who shared her life with the chimpanzees in Tanzania for 50 years. Punset’s way of thinking, in practice, is like an arrow that flies through time as it seeks out the centre of the target. The problem is that occasionally this point doesn’t exist, and the projectile loses itself in the abysses of myster y. But it’s not his fault.

BM: Does the brain have an ideology?

EP: Definitely no. What happens is that ideological and doctrinal convictions implanted in the brain have a transcendental importance, and can change the form of reality. There is a thing we can call discordance which is the lack of correspondence

between an ideological conviction and reality. When this takes place, the brain not only filters opposing opinion it also gets to inhibit the cerebral circuits through which we can perceive this discordance. I think one of the reasons that explains the capability of people to make themselves unhappy has to do with this capacity of convictions to influence, to distort reality.

BM: To be happy, do you have to renounce moral convictions?

EP: Beliefs can sometimes accompany levels of happiness. In the surveys we have carried out on the dimensions of happiness, moderate religious feelings appear as a positive factor. At other times this encapsulation of religious and ideological convictions can lead to abnormal situations.

It has been shown by experiment that almost 60 per cent of people who undergo a test can end up at a criminal level as a result of an unfortunate environment or a moral prison.

BM: If human beings had had a greater capacity for changing opinion, does that mean histor y would have turned out differently, there would have been less wars, less violence?

EP: Although it appears incredible given the world wars and the holocaust of the last centur y, what we are confirming now is a drop in the levels of violence in the world and an increase in those of altruism, empathy and compassion. This is a fact that is going to deeply affect the world and educational and institutional designs. For the first time humanity has a future. Life expectancy has tripled, and for the first time levels of violence are not going up.

BM: What historical anecdotes would you suggest to your favourite writer, Stefan Zweig, if he had to rewrite his book Stellar moments of Humanity?

EP: I would have suggested to him the stor y of the Hungarian gynaecologist who sensed that washing hands was important 20 years before the discover y of infectious illnesses. I am sure Zweig would have felt an irresistible attraction to study it. And I

believe he would have been ver y interested in the experiment with the taxi drivers in London…

BM: What ideas are gaining ground today?

EP: I believe that social intelligence, the relation between one brain and another and not just what happens in the innermost part of the brain, is one of the ideas that is prospering. With social networks, ever y day we are seeing the results of this social intelligence, of this connection between different brains. In the same way, we are seeing that today there is no innovation without multi disciplinar y focuses, and on the other hand that specialization at any cost and isolation are ideas that carr y with them obstacles to grow th.

BM: Has the global financial crisis changed the conscience of society in any way?

EP: In times of crisis, the herd behaves in a certain way. It reaches out for intuition, for unconscious thought and appeals to the young for leadership. Altruism, on the other hand, is a biological constant that even many biologists questioned in the past, yet today we accept it even among other animals.

BM: Why does individual happiness depend on the values of society as a whole, on social organization?

EP: That’s what we have seen from scientists who are studying the subject of terrorism.

One of the conclusions they are putting for ward is that a change of organization in the marriage pattern, going from polygamy to monogamy, for example, reduces terrorism, in the sense that when you have fewer young men without wives one of the sources of terrorism disappears. In general terms, what is evident is that a change in conduct or organization has an effect on something that we considered basic and unmovable.

stopped suddenly for Eduard Punset. He was diagnosed with lung cancer that he finally managed to vanquish, after going through the operating theatre and being submitted to chemotherapy.

The illness represented a point of existential change for him, but also one of the most important revelations of his life. “With the illness, the conclusions you reach are not so much the result of an internal reflection as of seeing what is happening with the sentiments and ideas of the rest”, he explains. “In particular, you realize, through the people close to you, through friendship or family, to what unexpected point they lavish altruism, compassion and generosity”. Barely eight months after being diagnosed with cancer, Punset reappeared on his television programme to present a public offering of his testimony, accompanied by the specialists who treated hm. “The only thing I suggest is that the great change with the illness doesn’t affect you yourself, and that what changes is the conception of the rest.

I have seen irrefutable proof of this altruism, of this compassion, and I have seen little change in the sick people themselves.”

En cambio, Eduard Punset es capaz de explicar con total clarividencia todas y cada una de las teorías del mundo. No es periodista, ni científico, ni miembro oficial del comité del premio Nobel, pero el catalán ha entrevistado en su programa de la televisión pública, Redes, a la mayoría de los hombres y mujeres de ciencia esenciales de las últimas décadas. Desde Hamilton O. Smith, uno de los artífices del mapa del genoma humano; pasando por Philip Zimbardo, el ideólogo del famoso experimento de la prisión de Stanford; hasta Jane Goodall, la primatóloga que convivió durante 50 años con chimpancés en Tanzania. El modo de pensar de Punset, en la práctica, se parece a una flecha que recorre los tiempos en busca del centro de una diana. El problema es que, en ocasiones, ese punto no existe, y el proyectil se pierde en los abismos del misterio. Pero no es culpa suya.

BM: ¿El cerebro tiene ideología?

EP: Definitivamente no. Lo que ocurre es que las convicciones ideológicas y doctrinales implantadas en el cerebro tienen una importancia trascendental, y pueden deformar la realidad.

Hay una cosa que podemos llamar disonancias y que es la falta de correspondencia entre una

convicción ideológica y la realidad. Cuando se produce esto, el cerebro no solo filtra la opinión contraria, sino que llega a inhibir los circuitos cerebrales mediante los cuales se podía percibir esta disonancia. Pienso que una de las razones que explican la capacidad de la gente para hacerse infeliz tiene que ver con esta capacidad de que las convicciones influyan, distorsionen la realidad.

BM: ¿Para ser feliz hay que renunciar a las convicciones morales?

EP: Las creencias pueden acompañar algunas veces los índices de felicidad. El sentimiento religioso moderado en las encuestas que hemos realizado sobre las dimensiones de la felicidad aparece como un factor positivo, y otras veces este encapsulamiento de las convicciones religiosas o ideológicas puede conducir a situaciones anormales. Se ha comprobado a través de un experimento que casi el 60 por ciento de las personas sometidas a prueba pueden llegar a grados delictivos a causa de un entorno desgraciado o de una prisión moral.

BM: ¿Si el ser humano hubiese tenido más capacidad para cambiar de opinión, la historia hubiese sido de otra forma, hubiese habido menos guerras, menos violencia?

EP: Lo que estamos constatando ahora es, aunque parezca increíble a la luz de las guerras mundiales y el holocausto del siglo pasado, una disminución de los índices de violencia en el mundo, y un aumento de los de altruismo, empatía y compasión.

Esto es una verdad que va a conmover el mundo y los esquemas educativos e institucionales. Por primera vez la Humanidad tiene futuro. Se ha triplicado la esperanza de vida, y por primera vez no están creciendo los índices de violencia.

BM: ¿Qué anécdotas históricas le sugeriría usted a su escritor favorito, Stefan Zweig, si tuviese que reescribir su libro Los momentos estelares de la humanidad?

EP: Yo le hubiera sugerido la historia del ginecólogo húngaro que

intuyó, 20 años antes de que se descubriesen las enfermedades infecciosas, que lavarse las manos era importante. Estoy seguro que a Zweig habría sentido una atracción irresistible por estudiarlo. Y creo que también le habría interesado mucho el experimento de los taxistas de Londres…

BM: ¿Qué ideas están ganando enteros hoy día?

Creo que la inteligencia social, la relación de un cerebro con otro y no sólo lo que ocurre en el seno de un cerebro, es una de estas ideas que están prosperando. Con la redes sociales estamos viendo todos los días los resultados de esta inteligencia social, de esta conexión entre distintos cerebros. En el mismo sentido, estamos viendo que hoy no hay innovación sin enfoques multidisciplinares, y en cambio las especialización a toda costa y el aislamiento son ideas que conllevan cortapisas al crecimiento.

EP: ¿La crisis financiera global ha cambiado en algún sentido la conciencia de la sociedad?

En momentos de crisis, la manada se comporta de una manera determinada. Echa mano de la intuición, del pensamiento inconsciente y recurre al liderazgo de los jóvenes. El altruismo, en cambio, es una constante biológica que en el pasado muchos biólogos incluso cuestionaban, pero que hoy admitimos incluso en el resto de los animales.

BM: ¿Por qué la felicidad individual depende de los valores de la sociedad al completo, de la organización social?

EP: Eso lo hemos visto en los científicos que están estudiando el tema del terrorismo. Una de las conclusiones que están avanzando es que un cambio de organización en el esquema matrimonial, pasar de la poligamia a la monogamia, por ejemplo, disminuye el terrorismo, en el sentido de que al haber menos jóvenes sin esposa desaparece una de las fuentes de este terrorismo. En términos generales, lo que es evidente es que un cambio de conducta o de organización incide sobre algo que considerábamos básico e imperturbable.

lA vida de los otros EN NOVIEMBRE DE 2007, el tiempo se detuvo

de repente para Eduard Punset. Le fue diagnosticado un cáncer de pulmón al que pudo finalmente vencer, tras haber pasado por el quirófano y haberse sometido a un tratamiento de quimioterapia. La enfermedad supuso para él un punto de inflexión existencial, pero también una de las revelaciones más importantes de su vida. “En la enfermedad, las conclusiones a las que llegas no son tanto el resultado de una reflexión interna, como de ver lo que ocurre con el sentimiento y la ideas de los demás”, explica. “Particularmente, te das cuenta, por la gente allegada a ti, por amistad, o por familia, de hasta qué punto parece insospechado cómo se prodigan el altruismo, la compasión y la generosidad”. Apenas ocho meses después de aquel diagnóstico, Punset reapareció en su programa de televisión para ofrecer públicamente su testimonio, acompañado de los especialistas que trataron su cáncer. “Yo lo único que sugiero es que el gran cambio en la enfermedad no atañe a uno mismo, lo que cambia es la concepción de los demás. He visto pruebas irrefutables de este altruismo, de esta compasión, y he visto pocos cambios en los propios enfermos”.

unset strains against being the last leaf in winter, barely hanging on to the branch of a tree, as happens to the old Koskoosh (“He didn’t complain. That was how life was and it seemed fair to him”) in Jack London’s story. There, the tribe, which is in a hurry to get on the road and loaded up with heavy packs, finally abandons the old man – resigned to die – next to a fire in the middle of the snow. Punset maintains that for the first time in the history of evolution humans have conquered this cruel and voracious metaphor for the law of life. Eduard himself is the best example of an existence filled to the brim with expectations, dreams and projects. Time is no longer a shadow for the herd of mankind that continually lengthens behind them. The future, at 70 something, can also be a beautiful seascape to lean out over every day and be astonished like a child, immortal.

BM: What revolution is still waiting for humanity?

EP: There’s a big revolution waiting, one that stems from the verification that there is life before death, something that humanity didn’t realize before. The extending of life expectancy and the simultaneous use of new technology will allow a life to have a future for the first time in the history of evolution. We will grow tired filling this life with objects, feelings and objectives.

BM: Do our brains deceive us?

EP: The brain is not for seeking the truth. It never has been. But it is for surviving, for not banging one’s head against the wall. It’s very possible that as we go about guaranteeing the possibility of survival in more normal conditions

the possibility of seeking the truth will flourish.

BM: The truth always comes later…

EP: Of course, and ‘if’ there is truth, obviously…

BM: Which is more contagious about human behaviour, good or evil?

EP: Since the beginning of time there have been two ways of seeing this, one that considered human nature as perverse and the other, the opposite, that it was friendly, like Buddhism. Studies of innate morals and social intelligence would show that the Buddhists were more right than the Christians, in that human nature has a tendency to be more understanding than we thought.

BM: And what is the goal for human beings?

EP: To survive.

BM: But we are doing many more things…

First comes the solution in evolutionary terms, and then the problem. With birds, the first things to show are the feathers to protect them from the cold, and then these feathers help them to fly.

First comes cooking to survive, and then comes the art that allows us to enjoy the cooking. It’s difficult to identify a human activity that doesn’t have the two sides, that is useful and at the same time turns into art.

BM: Is there something super-natural in the mind, or simply that it is extraordinarily natural?

EP: The supernatural in the mind is an add on to what is natural, and it’s true that when we analyse the minds of people the level of super natural knowledge is till very surprising. For example, 9 out of 10 people say that they have felt that somebody is looking at them from behind, and that we know is scientifically impossible.

BM: What possibilities are there still open for human beings to explore?

EP: Human beings have more than enough possible openings to develop. I, personally, don’t expect many more.

duard Punset se resiste a ser una hoja del último invierno, apenas sujeta a la rama de un árbol, como le ocurre al viejo Koskoosh (“No se quejaba. Así era la vida y aquello le parecía justo”) del cuento de Jack London. Allí, la tribu, que tiene prisa por seguir su camino y carga con fardos muy pesados, abandona finalmente al anciano -resignado a morir- en mitad de la nieve, junto a un fuego. Punset sostiene que por primera vez en la historia de la evolución el ser humano ha vencido esa metáfora cruel y voraz de la ley de la vida. El propio Eduard es el mejor ejemplo de una existencia colmada de expectativas, sueños y proyectos. El tiempo ha dejado de ser para la manada de los hombres una sombra que se alarga hacia atrás continuamente.

El futuro, a los setenta y tantos, también puede ser un hermoso paisaje marítimo al que asomarse cada día y ante el cual asombrase como un niño, inmortal.

BM: ¿Qué revolución le queda pendiente a la Humanidad?

EP: Le queda una gran revolución, que parte de la constatación de que hay vida antes de la muerte, cosa que antes no sabía la Humanidad. El alargamiento de la esperanza de vida y la utilización de nuevas tecnologías simultáneamente permite que una vida tenga futuro por primera vez en la historia de la evolución. Nos cansaremos llenando de objetos, de sentimientos y de objetivos esta vida.

BM: ¿Nuestro cerebro nos engaña?

EP: El cerebro no está para buscar la verdad, nunca ha estado para eso, sino para sobrevivir, para no pegarse de cabeza contra la pared.

Es muy posible que en la medida

en que vayamos garantizando la posibilidad de sobrevivir en condiciones más normales aflore la posibilidad de buscar la verdad.

BM: La verdad siempre para más tarde…

EP: Desde luego, y si hay verdad, claro…

BM: ¿Qué se contagia más del comportamiento humano, la bondad o la maldad?

EP: Desde el comienzo de los tiempos ha habido dos tipos de concepción, una que consideraba que la naturaleza humana era perversa, y otra, al contrario, que era amable, como el budismo. Las investigaciones sobre la moral innata y sobre la inteligencia social darían a entender que tenían más razón los budistas que los cristianos, en cuanto a que la naturaleza humana tiene una tendencia a ser comprensiva mayor de lo que pensábamos.

BM: ¿Y cuál es la finalidad del ser humano?

EP: Sobrevivir.

BM: Pero hacemos muchas más cosas…

EP: Primero surge la solución en términos evolutivos, y después el problema. A los pájaros, primero les salen las plumas para protegerse del frío, y estas plumas luego sirven para volar. Primero surge la cocina para sobrevivir, y luego surge el arte que permite disfrutar de la cocina. Es difícil identificar una actividad humana que no tenga las dos vertientes, que sea útil y que al mismo tiempo se convierta en arte.

BM: ¿Hay algo sobrenatural en la mente, o simplemente es extraordinariamente natural?

EP: Lo sobrenatural en la mente es un añadido a lo que es natural, y es cierto que cuando analizamos la mente de la gente el grado de conocimiento sobrenatural es todavía muy sorprendente. Por ejemplo, 9 de cada 10 personas dicen haber sentido que alguien les estaba mirando por la espalda, y eso sabemos que científicamente es imposible.

BM: ¿Qué posibilidades le faltan aún al ser humano por explorar?

EP: El ser humano tiene posibilidades abiertas más que suficientes para desarrollarse. Yo, particularmente, no espero mucho más.

ot only ‘is this world for the brave’; the parallel universe of Formula 1 is even more so. Because no proverb is sufficient when one learns about the current reality and brief history of what will always be the first Spanish team to compete with the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault on a racetrack. It was on 14 March, at the Bahrain Grand Prix, when the Hispania Racing, HRT F-1 Team became part of the ‘great circus’ and of the history of sport in Spain There was nothing legendary or poetic at the beginning. More like madness.

Without doubt, you have to be ‘a bit mad’, if not ‘completely crazy’ to pluck a racing car practically from nowhere in three weeks. But that’s what happened, as their Chief Engineer, Toni Cuquerella admits. Picking up more than one piece by hand at the factory, fitting them “just before going out on to the track” and carrying out “fewer tests than on a standard car sold from a showroom”, the two drivers, Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok, were able to give shape to the same dream at the Sakhir circuit as Adrián Campos had in his day. It was this ex-driver from Alzira who got the project under way and obtained an FIA license a year ago; and José Ramón Carabante (born Malaga, 1952), who has ended up carrying it forward. “The last component that we put in place I’m going to keep as a paperweight when the championship is over,” jokes the owner of the team.

He is clear why this blessed madness keeps going. “The Spanish are that way.”

This adopted son of Murcia was obliged to make an unexpected move to the front at the start of 2010 to avoid everything going pear-shaped, as happened with the U.S F1. “Campos suggested I make a small investment and

I’d accepted. However, the crisis meant that none of the expected sponsors materialized and that the initial project, in which Pau Gasol is also involved, couldn’t be completed”, recalls Carabante. “Practically all was lost,” when Bernie Ecclestone, the public figurehead of Formula 1, personally convinced him to become the main financial supporter of the team. “I had two options, bank strongly on it and carry it through or simply withdraw. As it was a unique opportunity for Spain, I accepted”.

Carabante took over from his predecessor at the head of the project and the original Campos Meta turned into Hispania. You don’t have to go back 3,000 years to find the answer as to why the team is called what it is. Apart from being the name with which the Phoenicians baptized the Iberian Peninsula, it is also the name of the business group that belongs to the team’s owner. A conglomerate into which he will plough back any profits that he might make from this experience. “With Formula 1 it is very difficult, if not to say impossible, to make money directly.

That’s the first thing that Ecclestone told me. Even if a sponsor comes along and gives you some more money you spend it on shaving another tenth off lap speed, What is clear is that in this world there are other profits to be made: the races are watched by more than 100 million people every fortnight, and in each country you are received by the monarch or the head of state. Doors are opened to other business.”

The dignity of a modest person There is the jewel of José Ramón’s business empire. Competing in his own way, but competing. Getting closer to the best, “a little bit more in each race”, as his Managing Director, Colin Kolles keeps on repeating.

After overcoming the “chaos at the start”, those that said the Spanish and the two other debut teams -Lotus and Virgin- were not worthy of a competition like Formula 1 have practically disappeared. There is plenty of proof of their worth. Except on one isolated occasion, the times of their drivers respect the historic 107% rule, that will once again come into play next year to sweep from the tarmac those that are the slowest on the grid.

El universo paralelo de la Fórmula 1 lo es aún más. Porque está de más cualquier proverbio cuando uno conoce la realidad actual y la breve historia del que ya para siempre quedará como el primer equipo español que compite con Ferrari, Mercedes o Renault en un circuito. Fue el 14 de marzo, en el Gran Premio de Bahrein, cuando el Hispania Racing, HRT F-1 Team entró a formar parte del ‘Gran Circo’ y de la historia del deporte nacional. No hubo nada de leyenda ni poesía en sus inicios. Más bien locura. Sin duda, hay que estar “un poco locos”, por no decir mucho, para sacar un monoplaza prácticamente de la nada en tres semanas. Pero así fue, como reconoce su Ingeniero Jefe, Toni Cuquerella. Recogiendo más de una pieza en mano de la fábrica, montándolas “justo antes de salir a la pista” y realizando “menos pruebas que a un coche normal que se vende en un concesionario”, sus dos pilotos titulares, Bruno Senna y Karun Chandhok, pudieron plasmar en el circuito de Sakhir el sueño que en un día tuvo Adrián Campos. El ex piloto alzireño fue quien comenzó el proyecto y consiguió la licencia FIA hace un año; José Ramón Carabante (Málaga, 1952), quien ha terminado sacándolo adelante. “El último componente que colocamos me lo quedaré de pisapapeles cuando acabe el campeonato”, bromea el propietario de la escudería, que tiene claro por qué sigue en marcha esta bendita locura. “Los españoles somos así”.

Este murciano de adopción se vio obligado a dar un paso al frente a principios de 2010 para evitar que todo se fuera al garete, como sucedió con el estadounidense USF1. “Campos me había propuesto realizar una pe-

queña inversión y yo había aceptado.

Sin embargo, la crisis provocó que no llegaran los patrocinadores previstos y que el proyecto inicial, en el que también estaba metido Pau Gasol, no se hiciera”, recuerda Carabante, que asegura que “prácticamente estaba todo perdido” cuando Bernie Ecclestone, tótem de la Fórmula 1, le convenció personalmente para convertirse en el sostén económico del equipo: “Tenía dos opciones, apostar fuerte y sacar adelante esto o simplemente retirarme. Como era una oportunidad única para España, acepté”.

Carabante relevó a su precursor al frente del proyecto y el primigenio Campos Meta se convirtió en Hispania.

No hay que remontarse 3.000 años para encontrar la respuesta a por qué la escudería se llama como se llama.

Además del término con que bautizaron los fenicios a la Península Ibérica, es el nombre del grupo empresarial que posee el dueño de la escudería. Un conglomerado en el que revertirán los beneficios de esta experiencia. “En la Fórmula 1 es muy difícil, por no decir imposible, ganar dinero directamente; es lo primero que me advirtió Ecclestone. Aunque llegue un patrocinador y te dé algo más, lo vas a querer gastar en arañar una décima. Lo que es evidente es que alrededor de este mundo se generan otras plusvalías: las carreras las ven más de 100 millones de personas cada 15 días y en cada país te recibe el Rey o el jefe de estado. Se abren puertas para otros negocios”.

possible”. “Of course I would like to compete for the podium and to win, but many successful drivers started in cars that were not competitive”, says the nephew of the legendary Ayrton Senna.

A close-knit group with a Spanish touch

o say that we are an annoyance is stupid. In the same way, those that annoy us are the big teams, as we have to brake to let their cars overtake us,” says Cuquerella, half joking, half serious. His argument is that in such an advanced sport, technologically speaking, there “should be a bit of everything”. “Teams like Honda, Toyota and BMW have disappeared because they spent a lot of money and didn’t win anything”, says the Chief Engineer. “The differences are there. It’s not the same having a budget of 400 or 500 million as 45, like us”, explains the team’s owner.

He compares his desires and those of Ferrari, for example, with two Spanish football clubs as different as Real Madrid and Numancia. “We are about as alike as an egg and a chestnut. We work on minimums and others have total freedom to spend”.

And what do his drivers think about all this? Chandhok, whose car was not ready until the actual practice session in Bahrain, believes that “José Ramón and his family are doing a good job”. At Lotus and Virgin there are people who have taken part in other projects, unlike them. But they are learning very quickly and have some brilliant ideas. “We are in Formula 1 and we do the best job we can”, says the Indian driver, who, like Bruno Senna, has not escaped the policy of rotating drivers introduced at Hispania in the last few races to give some opportunities to Japanese driver Yamamoto, the third in this conflict. So happy are they with the team that offered them the possibility of making their debut in the ‘Grand Circus’ that the Brazilian, without going any further, says he wants to keep going with Hispania “as long as

Carabante - who Chandhok defines as “a great father to us all” -, has forged a fellowship around him comparable with the Spanish football team who were recently proclaimed world champions for the first time. “Fórmula 1, as well as the headaches, is giving me a lot of enjoyment. Especially for the human side of things and the sacrifice people make, I feel for my team as I do for La Roja (the Spanish football team)”, stresses Carabante, proud of the “Spanish touch” that led one of Cuquerella’s backers - who had previously worked with Fernando Alonso and Robert Kubica - to support the project. “Professionally it could be a step backwards, but sentimentally it is very clearly forwards”, explains the Chief Engineer, one of the 200

people who make it possible for the cars to be on the grid.

Speaking of steps forward, Hispania could be making a very large one in preparation for 2011. As Cabarante says, a great opportunity has been presented “and you have to take advantage of it”. It is to change the current cars made by Dallara for those that Toyota had prepared for this year, as well as being able to use the installations the Japanese company has in the German city of Cologne.

The agreement will be for two years and will allow the team to think about more ambitious goals, like getting up to the level of Force India and Spiker. “The next championship we expect to be fighting to get among the points. It will be something historic”, says the alma mater of the team, who, until that day arrives, remains a realist. “Although I didn’t believe that we would get as far as we have at this point, we are still not ready for big goals. We have had little more than 10 races and this is a world in which it takes years to get settled.”

‘Cuque’ defines it as a “small victory that hardly anybody realizes” when one of the Hispania team finishes a race and does it ahead of the other newcomers.

Pero están aprendiendo muy rápido y tienen ideas brillantes. Estamos en la Fórmula 1 y hacemos el mejor trabajo que podemos”, afirma el hindú, que, como Bruno Senna, no se ha librado de la política de rotaciones instaurada en Hispania en las últimas carreras para dar oportunidades al japonés Yamamoto, tercero en

Es la de cambiar los actuales coches fabricados por Dallara por los que Toyota tenía preparados para este año, amén de la utilización de las instalaciones que la firma japonesa tiene en la ciudad alemana de Colonia. El acuerdo será por dos años y permitirá al equipo pensar en metas más ambiciosas, como ponerse a la altura de Force India y Spiker. “El próximo campeonato esperamos ya estar luchando por entrar en puntos; sería algo histórico”, avanza el alma máter de la escudería, quien, hasta que ese día llegue, es realista. “Aunque no creía que llegaríamos tan lejos a estas alturas, aún no estamos para grandes metas. Llevamos poco más de 10 carreras y este es un mundo en el que cuesta años asentarte”.

‘Cuque’ cataloga de “pequeña victoria que casi nadie se da cuenta” cada vez que algún Hispania acaba una carrera y lo hace por delante de los otros debutantes.

Great haste and few hours of sleep ended up with the project moving forward when many still didn’t know the name of the companion at their side, when there were neither spares nor the possibility of producing them, up to the point where the first Spanish car became one of the most reliable on the grid. “Our great advantage was that we were so far behind that we had plenty of room to get better.” There are still changes to be made on the horizon. Not only of a technical and sporting nature, but also sentimental. In the long term it’s “unmovable” that the headquarters of Hispania should be in the Region of Murcia. Carabante makes that clear as often as he can, poohpoohing any rumours of a sale or transferring the team elsewhere.

ing the autonomous regions from getting into debt because of the crisis”. And to show there is no doubt that he would not betray his country, the businessman recalls “there are eight engineers at the University of Murcia working on the evolution of the cars”.

Pedro Martínez De La Rosa or Jaime Alguersuari could put the icing on the cake in the future. “From the beginning we have been looking for a very Spanish team,” and it is logical that one of the drivers should be home grown. “It’s a dream that one day will become reality. We were in contact with Pedro for this year”, points out José Ramón, whose mouth waters just thinking that the Spanish driver could one day be at the wheel of a Hispania car. “I have always been a fan of this sport and I really loved Ayrton Senna, as I did Lauda and Prost. But the best at the moment is Fernando Alonso. He’s a real one-off both on and off the racetrack. “When you show a bit of perspective, you can see what he has achieved and what he has done for this sport in our country, where there was no culture of Formula 1 before”. The recognition for having achieved something historic will surely also accompany Carabante before long.

He will be listed in encyclopedias – like one of his grandfathers “who was a painter and has four pages in the Espasa Calpe” – for being the owner of the first Spanish racing team. In his service manual will also appear that at 18 years old he took hold of a company with 800 workers, involved in jobs that ranged from picking strawberries to selling orthopedic apparatus, and led a real estate group of 30 companies. With degrees in Law and Economics, a taste for the arts and a collection of fountain pens as well, of course.

All that remains to be seen is how far he gets with his achievements in Formula 1. Now his project has managed to survive and he has put a car capable of 340 kilometres per hour on the track, what is going to be his next goal? “Races have to be finished. Running in them is not enough.”

Todavía hay cambios por realizar en el horizonte. No sólo de índole técnico y deportivo, sino también sentimental. A largo plazo es “inamovible” que la sede de Hispania esté en la Región de Murcia. Lo deja claro en cuanto puede Carabante, que resta credibilidad a cualquier rumor de venta o de traslado del equipo. “No nos vamos a ir de aquí. El proyecto de Fuente Álamo está paralizado, como obras tan importantes, pero es porque el Gobierno impide a las Autonomías endeudarse por la crisis”. Y para que no haya duda de que no traicionará a la patria, el empresario recuerda que “hay ocho ingenieros de la Universidad de Murcia trabajando en la evolución de los coches”.

Ramón, a quien se le hace la boca agua solo de pensar que el único campeón nacional en la historia del ‘Gran Circo’ pudiera estar algún día al volante de un Hispania. “Yo siempre he sido aficionado a este deporte y me gustaba muchísimo Ayrton Senna, como también Lauda o Prost. Pero, actualmente, el mejor es Fernando Alonso. Es un auténtico fuera de serie tanto dentro como fuera de los circuitos. “Cuando tengamos un poco de perspectiva, se verán sus logros y su aportación a este deporte en nuestro país, donde antes no había cultura de Fórmula 1”. El reconocimiento por haber logrado algo histórico seguramente acompañará también a Carabante dentro de un tiempo. Ingresará en las enciclopedias -como uno de sus abuelos “que fue pintor y tiene cuatro hojas en la Espasa Calpe”-, en calidad de dueño de la primera escudería española. En su hoja de servicios aparecerá, además, que con 18 años cogió una empresa con 800 trabajadores, que participó en negocios de recogida del fresón o venta de aparatos ortopédicos y que dirige un grupo inmobiliario de 30 empresas. Licenciaturas en Derecho y Economía, gusto por el arte y colección de plumas aparte, claro. Solo falta por ver hasta dónde llegan sus logros en la Fórmula 1.

Una vez que su proyecto ha logrado “sobrevivir” y poner un coche de carreras a 340 kilómetros por hora, falta por ver cuál es la meta. “Las carreras hay que terminarlas, no basta con correr”.

A largo plazo es inamovible que la sede de Hispania esté en Murcia.

lustration? Design? Simply Art? Let’s call it Andi. It’s futile today to try and separate genres of art, diverse as they are in the great variety of expressions and how they are staged. There is art at the Prado art gallery just as there is in the street and in the folder “My pictures”. And that is reason to be happy. It’s difficult, however, to find artists who are capable of keeping up with the pace of a world that’s going too fast, of not getting fed up with the constant process of digesting and recycling that we are obliged to go through. Man has not been capable, and possibly never will be, of finding a fair system. But at least we’ve moved on from primitive caves to Plato, and now we’ve added to this a connection to the Internet and all that. Andi Rivas has covered it with his drawings, a bit like the jokes from his home province of Cadiz. Works that are free from ties, that are always free and easy and have a sense of humour superimposed on the social criticism contained in them. Art was never so much within our reach. Andi, knows this well and showers his paintings on walls, canvases, books and T shirts. “Perhaps it’s because my work revolves around drawing, it is very malleable towards any other discipline. A drawing is a project, a raw idea. Everything starts there. At the moment, the multi-disciplinary training and technical capabilities of a current day artist multiplies the chances of creativity. A lot of barriers have been knocked down (or are in the process of being) as far as artistic disciplines are concerned. So it’s easy to find design studios that carry out installations, video and advertising, and it is this same creative nucleus that goes out into the street to call for a place in the city.” An art that without being combative fights against the ugliness produced in this era, as seen by Andi in “aberrations like valances, bubbled paint finish, tubular glasses, plastic cutlery, tacky prints and their combinations...”

Llamémoslo Andi. Fútil es la tarea de separar hoy día los géneros del arte, atomizado en las más variadas expresiones y soportes. Hay arte dentro del Museo del Prado como lo hay en la calle o en la carpeta “Mis imágenes”. Y eso es motivo de alegría.

Es difícil, sin embargo, encontrar artistas capaces de correr a la par de un mundo que va demasiado deprisa, capaz de no empacharse en el constante proceso de digestión y reciclaje a que nos obligamos. El hombre no ha sido capaz, ni posiblemente lo será, de encontrar un sistema justo, pero al menos hemos pasado de las primitivas cavernas a la de Platón, y ahora a ésta la hemos puesto conexión a internet y todo. Andi Rivas la ha cubierto con sus dibujos a modo de las chirigotas de su tierra. Obras libres de ataduras, con capas de desenfado y sentido del humor siempre superpuestas a la crítica social que contienen. El arte jamás estuvo tan al alcance de la mano; el gaditano lo sabe bien y desparrama sus dibujos por muros, lienzos, libros o camisetas. “Quizás porque mi obra gira en torno al dibujo, es tan fácilmente maleable hacia cualquier

otra disciplina. El dibujo es un proyecto, la idea en bruto. De ahí nace todo. En la actualidad la formación multidisciplinar y la capacidad técnica con la que cuenta el artista de nuestros días multiplica las posibilidades de la creatividad. Se han roto muchas barreras (o se está en ello) en lo que a las disciplinas artísticas se refiere. Así es fácil ver estudios de diseño que hacen instalaciones, vídeo y publicidad, y es ese mismo núcleo creativo el que también sale a la calle para reclamar un sitio en la ciudad”.

Un arte que sin ser combativo lucha contra la fealdad que produce esta época, representada para Andi en “aberraciones como la cenefa, el gotelé, los vasos de tubo, los cubiertos de plástico, los estampados horteras y sus combinaciones...”.

Para el artista gaditano, “hacer una vida cotidiana bella es tan importante como una obra de arte.

Por mucho que algunos tiendan a pensar el arte no está nunca por encima de la gente, sirve a la gente. Por esto creo que el buen diseño es un Arte con mayúsculas”. No hay que olvidar que en el Renacimiento se hablaba del Arti del disegno, expresión que hacía referencia a una concepción intelectual y estructural de la creación artística.

Su estilo “poprrenacentista” maneja las estéticas del cómic underground americano, pasando por el macarrismo de Frank Kozik a la imaginería surfera del mundo naive de Keith Haring.

If the beauty of the arabesques of Muslim art –that great Art-Design– and the level of perfection it reached came partly from the prohibition of drawing their God, with Andi it’s a bit of the opposite. In his case, it’s not that representing God in art is prohibited, it’s that God is what is consumed and has, as with the Christian God, the gift of omnipresence. Our insatiable religion of desire, gobbling up illusions of freedom that are never satisfied, converted into a profane and profuse pop. “It’s becoming ever more difficult to escape the waves of globalization. I draw the world in which we live, my reality. I am trying to make these information circuits more biodiverse. I don’t pretend to fight stoically against these ‘waves of globalization.’ I prefer to surf them, which is more enjoyable. I believe that the language of revolutionary pamphlets is well and truly obsolete. I’m also against the absorbing power of globalization. But I believe the revolution against it is more subtle and intelligent than the role models of ’68. Revolution today should not fall back on the social element, but on the personal sphere of the individual.”

Revolution starts within oneself. With Andi this consists of showing faces that appear friendly but don’t necessarily have to hide their sinister other side. As in his Gernika Brother, a design carried out for the 75th anniversary of the painting by Picasso - “the maestro”, as Rivas refers to him - with the dramatic effect taken away, playful despite the criticism that is poured on war, weapons and the violence exercised by the media.

His soulful paintings of metropolises such as Madrid, Paris and London, to which Andi gives shape with simplicity, and in multi-coloured compositions the beauty and the trampled way of life of the big city. Or, on another line, works that connect with the Spanish cultural inheritance, in an attempt to meet up again with aesthetics, in search of an identity. “I try to create without barriers, recycling images of my environment, feeding on what I see, read and think, transforming it with my drawing into part of my own language”. Come high or low tide, Andi’s work moves as naturally as a fish in water. Graceful and svelte lines, a dynamism that manages to fill each drawing with life. Reality converging in a world that’s two dimensionally sincere.

i la belleza de los arabescos del arte musulmán –ese gran Arte-Diseño- y su grado de perfección alcanzado nacieron en parte de la prohibición de representar a su Dios, en Andi ocurriría un poco a la inversa. En este caso no es que esté prohibido representar a Dios, es que Dios es el consumo y tiene, como el Dios cristiano, el don de la ubicuidad. Nuestra religión insaciable del deseo, fagocitadora de ilusiones de libertad nunca satisfechas, convertida a un profano y profuso pop: “Cada vez es más difícil escapar a las olas de la globalización.

Represento el mundo en el que vivimos, mi realidad. Se trata de hacer de estos circuitos de información más biodiversos. No pretendo luchar estoicamente contra esas ‘olas globalizantes’, prefiero surfearlas que es más divertido. Creo que el lenguaje panfletario revolucionario está muy obsoleto, yo también estoy en contra del poder absorbente de la globalización pero creo que la revolución contra ésta es más sutil e inteligente que los modelos del 68, la revolución de hoy en día no debe recaer en lo social, sino en la esfera personal del individuo.”

La revolución empieza por uno mismo y en Andi ésta consiste en mostrar caras amables en apariencia, pero que no por ello tienen por qué ocultar su reverso tenebroso. Como en su Gernika Brother, un diseño realizado con motivo del 75º aniversario de la obra de Picasso -“el maestro”, según le denomina Rivas-, desprovisto de carga dramática, lúdico a pesar de las críticas que vierte sobre la guerra, las armas o la violencia ejercida desde los medios. Sus entrañables retratos de metrópolis como Madrid, París o Londres, en las que Andi plasma con sencillez y en abigarradas composiciones la belleza y el modo de vida atropellado de las grandes urbes. O, en otra línea, trabajos que conectan con el abolengo cultural español, en un intento de reencuentro estético, de búsqueda identitaria: “Intento crear -afirma el artista- sin barreras, reciclando imágenes de mi entorno, alimentándome de lo que veo, leo, pienso, transformándolo con mi trazo en parte de mi propio lenguaje”. Haya pleamar o bajamar, la tabla de Andi se mueve como pez en el agua. Líneas gráciles y esbeltas, un dinamismo que consigue llenar de vida cada dibujo. La realidad convergiendo en un mundo bidimensionalmente sincero.

It’s practically impossible, but for us it’s not going to be that way, we are going to try” was the phrase from Santillana, a forward in the Spanish team that was leading Malta 3-1 at half time and needed to score nine goals to reach the finals of the European Championship of 1984.

La Roja called on all its fury and managed to achieve what appeared improbable. The story was related by Spanish TVE reporter José Ángel de La Casa, a person who looked cold but whose voice burnt with emotion when Señor notched up 12-1 on the scoreboard. The Spanish couldn’t distinguish between dreams and reality.

he longest final at Wimbledon -4 hours and 48 minutes- took place in 2008 between Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer. In the final set, after a second interruption by the rain, they got to 5-5. Rafa reached a double break that Roger saved miraculously. Then, after an unforgettable point with Roger producing an unbelievable return to a Nadal smash, he still had two points to break serve. Roger once again resisted, but Nadal ended up breaking the Swiss’s serve. It was almost dark when the player from Manacor on the island of Mallorca served out to win what is regarded as the best tennis match of all time.

It was an easy run, more of a classic than one of the great stages of the Tour. Between rises that barely reached slopes of 5.8 metres, Miguel Indurain began an unexpected attack 25 Km from the finish that blew the race apart. That night all the chasers went to bed 50 seconds behind the Spanish cyclist.

The against the clock and the first mountain stage, with a spectacular final climb to La Plagne, would be the coup de grace for Indurain on his way to becoming the first cyclist to win five consecutive Tours.

Esa noche sus perseguidores se acostaron a 50 segundos del español La contrarreloj y la primera etapa de montaña, con una espectacular subida final a La Plagne, sería el golpe de gracia de Indurain, que sería el primer ciclista en ganar cinco Tours consecutivos.

arta Domínguez missed out on the 2004 Olympic games because of a serious tendon injury in her left foot; she overcame it to be crowned winner of the 5,000 metres for the second time at the European games of 2006.

Her fall in the 2008 Olympics at the last but one hurdle deprived her of a medal that she looked to have secured. At the age of 33, Marta had the gold medal hung around her neck for the 3,000 metre hurdles at the World Championships in Berlín. The runner launched an attack that let her cross the finishing line solo and 40 metres ahead, knowing she would be the champion. Marta set the best time in the world that year.

Although the White House has called for the ruling to be dropped as unconstitutional, several other states are considering the creation of similar laws.

Doors in the countryside

ccording to the proverb, good fences make good neigbours. The one that separates the US state of Arizona and Sonora in Mexico is almost perfect: it’s 626 kilometres long, and trying to cross it costs the lives of more than 200 people every year.

But it doesn’t make good neighbours. Robert Krentz, whose ranch is right alongside the frontier, was killed, presumably by a smuggler who he surprised one night. Sergio Adrián Hernández, aged 14, was gunned down by a border patrol.

There are deaths on both sides of the line.

Illegal immigration, along with the catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico, has become the biggest (or at the least most immediate) head-banger for Obama. The reason: the most transited frontier in the world, the one that separates the two Americas, and the one that is changing the face of the continent.

Arizona, the state through which most illegals enter the country, passed a new law, SB1070 on 23 April. Under the aseptic name hides a ruling that makes criminals of the nearly 500,000 illegal immigrants in Arizona (30% of its population, but only 12% of the electorate). What’s more, the new law allows the police to ask to see the documents of any person suspected of being an “illegal”. This has opened up an “immigrant hunt”, according to associations opposed to SB1070.

In the United States there are 35 million Latinos. One in six inhabitants is a Latin American, higher than the number of Afro-Americans.

Some 70% of them voted for Obama.

Writer Jorge Molist lived in the U.S for several years and is the author, among other works, of the novel Presagio, in which he portrays the collision between Latin and Anglo worlds. “The law is motivated by the fear felt in Arizona about the invasion they are suffering from the south,” he says. “It’s like wanting to put doors in the countryside. Or in the Sonora desert in this case.

The Latinos will keep crossing the frontier. For as many as they send back, they won’t be able to stop them. While there is poverty to the south and riches in the north the invasion will continue. Barbed wire fences, police, bullets and deaths, none of them can put a brake on their dreams and the desire for a better life.”

The numbers and the facts support his argument. A law can change the life of individuals, but can’t hold back a process that is measured in generations. According to the U.N, at the moment there are 214 million immigrants trying to enter one country or another around the world, 37% more than in 1990.

In the same period, immigration to the United States has grown by 80%. The experts maintain that we are seeing the third wave of globalization, after those of trade and finance. Óscar Guardiola-Rivera, author of the book What if Latin America Ruled the World? claimed recently in declarations to Babylon Radio: “The census that is being carried out in the United States in 2010 will show that there are between 10 and 15 states in the Union where the Anglos are no longer in the majority. Even if today they were to close all the borders completely, by the year 2040 all the states in the USA will have a Latin majority. The next Latin American country will be the United States.”

La que separa los estados de Arizona (EE UU) y Sonora (México) es casi perfecta: mide 626 kilómetros e intentar cruzarla cuesta la vida a más de 200 personas cada año. Pero no hace buenos vecinos. Robert Krentz, cuyo rancho se encontraba junto a la frontera, fue asesinado presuntamente por un contrabandista al que sorprendió de noche. Sergio Adrián Hernández, de 14 años, fue abatido a tiros por la patrulla fronteriza. Muertos en ambos lados de la línea.

La inmigración ilegal se ha convertido junto a la catástrofe del golfo de México en el mayor (o al menos el más inmediato) quebradero de cabeza de Obama. La razón, la frontera más transitada del mundo, la que separa las dos Américas, la que está cambiando el rostro del continente.

Arizona, el estado por el que más ilegales entran en el país, aprobó el pasado 23 de abril la ley SB1070. Bajo este aséptico nombre se esconde una normativa que convierte en delincuentes a los casi 500.000 inmigrantes ilegales que hay en Arizona (el 30% de su población, pero tan sólo el 12% del electorado). Además, la nueva ley permite a la Policía solicitar la documentación a cualquier persona sospechosa de ser “ilegal”. Esto, según las asociaciones contrarias a la SB1070, desata una “caza al inmigrante”.

En EE UU viven 35 millones de latinos. Uno de cada seis habitantes del país es hispanoamericano, cifra que supera la de la población negra.

Los números y los hechos le dan la razón. Una ley puede cambiar la vida de los individuos, pero no detener un proceso que se mide en generaciones. Según la ONU, en este momento hay 214 millones de inmigrantes tratando de entrar en algún país del mundo. Esto supone un aumento del 37% respecto a 1990. En este mismo periodo, la inmigración en los Estados Unidos ha crecido un 80%. Los expertos sostienen que asistimos a la tercera ola de la globalización, tras las que supusieron el comercio y las finanzas. Óscar Guardiola-Rivera, autor del libro What if Latin America Ruled the World?, afirmó recientemente en declaraciones a Babylon Radio: “El censo que se está llevando a cabo en Estados Unidos en 2010 va a demostrar que hay entre diez y quince estados de la Unión donde los anglos ya no son mayoría”. Es más: “Aunque se cerrasen hoy las fronteras por completo, en el año 2040 todos los estados de los USA tendrán mayoría demográfica latina.

El próximo país latinoamericano será EE UU”.

La Arrocera is one of these points, famous among the immigrant routes for being the scene of continuous assaults and rapes carried out by groups of local people, a phenomenon that’s been going on without interruption and without any effective answer on the part of the local authorities since 1995.

eorge Molist sensed what is happening now back in the ‘80s: “Nearly 25 years ago, when I was working in the U.S, I tried to persuade my bosses to invest in marketing targeted at the Latino population. To do this I presented them with population projections showing that by 2005 Latinos would be the second minority in the country. In the study the Anglos were the majority minority.

But in some areas, such as southern California, the great market of the future, the Anglos would be the minority to the Latinos. I made a mistake on the dates. It happened earlier”.

Two cultures Law SB1070 has become the catalyst for the collision of two cultures condemned to understand each other. “The relationship between the USA and Latin America has to improve,” says Ariadna, a young air hostess whose life runs between the two worlds. “Because, believe it or not each one depends on the other”.

Some 60% of U.S citizens approve of the Arizona law against 36% who think it “goes too far”.

This is reflected in a survey carried out by CBS. However, it also shows that 64% are in favour of the “without papers” staying in the country and legalizing their situation as temporary workers.

That leaves 32% who say, “They should be thrown out”.

George Molist said years ago that the U.S would one day have a president who would speak Spanish. He was right: in the last elections one Barack Obama, then a candidate, launched his 8 2 B A BY L O N M A G A Z I N E

electoral message in Spanish with a soft Mexican accent. The video lasted barely 31 seconds, but without doubt it had a lot to do with the massive support he received from the Spanish speaking community at the ballot box.

A support for which many feel they have been betrayed with the decision to send 1,200 soldiers from the National Guard to the frontier. “We will improve police controls without the need to change laws”, was the argument of the president as he tried to placate the feelings of the Latinos.

Sonora Desert Wile all this is going on, there are many people secretly crossing through frontier controls by paying bribes or hidden in trucks.

Others choose to make their way through the desert in search of the dream and a better life, turning to the so-called coyotes or polleros (chicken farmers), people who earn between 200,000 and 500,000 dollars a year from immigrants (pollos, chickens) to get them to the other side.

Luis Carlos Davis knows all too well about what happens at the frontier. The life of this young news report director, born and raised in Nogales, is a product of two countries, two cultures, and two languages. For years he passed along the 626 kilometre long frontier separating Mexico and Arizona with his camera. “The place where I grew up”, he says. The result is the documentary 389 Miles: living the border, which has led him to a conclusion: “Nothing is black and white. Each side is right in some respects”.

And that truth is sometimes very hard: “Immigrants are easy prey. Before reaching the border they can be robbed, abused, raped,” he explains.

As a matter of fact, in his documentary he managed to film some “bajadores”, the name given to those who hide along the routes taken by the immigrants before they try to cross to the United States and attack them and rob them of the few belongings they carry. “Crossing a river has its risks”, says Luis Carlos,

“but the desert hides many secrets. The terrain is very harsh, with very little vegetation”.

The Sonora, which covers 311,000 km², is one of the biggest in the world. In some parts it rains barely once every five years, and the temperature can vary between a maximum of 44ºC and a minimum of -20ºC. It’s a place where, in the early morning of 1 July, rival gangs making money from drug trafficking and people smuggling, clashed in a long shootout that left 21 dead.

Facts like this back up the arguments of those who see illegal immigration bringing with it violence and crime. Luis Carlos believes the comparison is not fair. “The immigrants are hard working people who contribute

a lot to the development of the country. They face long and poorly paid days, abuse, solitude, isolation, hunger, discrimination, persecution”.

Davis is determined to get Governor Brewer to attend one of the public showings of his prize winning documentary. So far she has declined the invitations, but the young film maker is not giving up.

Will SB1070 make good neighbours? Although it’s not made from concrete and barbed wire, the law is a sharp pointed fence against a form of cohabitation that is shown to be inevitable. And what use are these fences in a changing world where 214 million people have decided to leave their countries, fleeing from poverty in search of a better life?

orge Molist intuyó lo que estaba sucediendo ya en los años 80: “Hará casi veinticinco años, cuando trabajaba en los EE UU, quise persuadir a mis jefes para que invirtieran en marketing dirigido a la población latina.

Para ello les presenté proyecciones poblacionales mostrándoles que para 2005 los latinos serían la segunda minoría del país. En ese estudio los anglos eran la minoría mayoritaria. Pero que en ciertos lugares como el sur de California, el gran mercado futuro, los anglos serían minoría frente a los latinos. Me equivoqué de fechas. Ocurrió antes”.

Dos culturas La ley SB1070 se ha convertido en catalizador del choque de dos culturas condenadas a entenderse. “La relación entre USA y América Latina tiene que mejorar”, afirma Ariadna, una joven azafata de vuelo cuya vida transcurre entre los dos mundos, “porque, lo crean o no, dependemos unos de otros”.

El 60% de estadounidenses valora positivamente la ley de Arizona frente a un 36% que considera que “va demasiado lejos”. Así lo refleja una encuesta realizada por la CBS en la que, sin embargo, se afirma también que el 64% se muestra favorable a que los “sin papeles” permanezcan en el país legalizando su situación como trabajadores temporales. Queda un 32% que manifiesta que “deben ser expulsados”.

Jorge Molist afirmó hace años que EE UU tendría algún día un presidente que hablaría

español. Acertó: en las últimas elecciones un Barack Obama todavía candidato lanzó su mensaje electoral también en español con un suave acento mexicano.

El vídeo tiene una duración de apenas 31 segundos, pero sin duda tuvo mucho que ver en el masivo apoyo que la comunidad hispanohablante le prestó en las urnas. Un apoyo que muchos han sentido traicionado por la decisión de enviar 1.200 soldados de la Guardia Nacional a la frontera. “Mejoraremos el control policial sin necesidad de cambiar las leyes”, argumentó el presidente con el ánimo de calmar los ánimos latinos.

Desierto de Sonora Mientras todo esto sucede, son muchos los que atraviesan clandestinamente los controles fronterizos a golpe de soborno o escondidos en camiones.

Otros optan por adentrarse en el desierto tras el sueño de una vida mejor recurriendo a los llamados coyotes o polleros, personas que ganan entre 200.000 y 500.000 dólares al año cobrando a los inmigrantes (pollos) por pasarles al otro lado.

Luis Carlos Davis sabe bien qué sucede en la frontera. La vida de este joven director de reportajes nacido y criado en Nogales es producto de dos países, dos culturas, dos idiomas.

Durante años recorrió con su cámara los 626 kilómetros de frontera que separan México y Arizona. “El lugar donde crecí”, cuenta. El resultado es el documental 389 millas: viviendo la frontera que le ha llevado a una conclusión: “Esto no es blanco ni negro. Cada cual tiene su verdad”.

Y esa verdad es a veces muy dura: “El emigrante es una presa fácil. Antes de llegar a la frontera pueden sufrir robos, abusos y violaciones”, explica.

De hecho en su documental logró filmar a los “bajadores”, sujetos que se esconden en las rutas que toman los inmigrantes antes de intentar cruzar a los Estados Unidos para asaltarles y robarles las pocas pertenencias que pueden cargar.

CLANDESTINELY.THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE SECRETLY CROSSING THROUGH FRONTIER CONTROLS BY PAYING BRIBES OR HIDDING IN TRUCKS. “Cruzar el río tiene sus riesgos”, explica Luis Carlos, “pero el desierto esconde muchos secretos. El terreno es escabroso, con muy poca vegetación”.

El de Sonora, con 311.000 km², es uno de los más grandes del mundo. En algunas de sus regiones llueve apenas una vez cada cinco años y las temperaturas oscilan entre máximos de 44ºC y mínimos de -20ºC. Es en este lugar donde, en la madrugada del 1 de julio, bandas rivales que se lucran con el tráfico de drogas y de personas se enfrentaron en un interminable tiroteo que dejó 21 muertos.

Hechos como éste reafirman a quienes consideran que la inmigración ilegal comporta violencia y delincuencia. Luis Carlos considera injusta tal equiparación: “Los inmigrantes

son gente trabajadora que contribuye mucho al desarrollo del país. Se enfrentan a jornadas largas y mal pagadas, abusos, soledad, aislamientos, hambre, discriminación, persecuciones”.

Davis está decidido a conseguir que la gobernadora Brewer asista a una de las proyecciones públicas de su premiado documental. De momento ella ha declinado las invitaciones, pero el joven realizador no desiste. ¿Hará la SB1070 buenos vecinos? Living in an Iberian dimension Vivir en dimensión ibérica

U

SUALLY, WHEN TALKING ABOUT relations between Spain and Portugal, we fall back on the recurring cliché about the two siblings who for years lived with their backs to each other and now walk happily hand in hand. We also tend to remember historic distrust from the times of the battle of Aljubarrota or of when Felipe II of Spain also became Felipe I of Portugal. Once we put aside the ill feelings, and with both countries now within the European Union, we can agree on saying that the future of Iberia looks very promising. It’s evident that almost 25 years after entering Europe, Spain and Portugal have both benefitted a lot, not only from the individual point of view but also from the Iberian perspective. Europe has served, among other things, to unite these two countries.

More than analyzing the aspects of a relationship that the politicians assure us is better than ever, I prefer to talk about what for me are the true protagonists: the citizens who live along the frontier.

There are many areas in which the Portuguese and the Spanish are separated by only a few kilometres, but given the relations of emotions and proximity one can say that the frontier practically no longer exists. They are citizens with first and family names although unknown to the vast majority of Spaniards and Portuguese. They don’t understand nationality, but neighbourhoods and quality of life. They know how to make the most of the opportunities they have on each side of an invisible line.

They are the ones who give rise to proposals that the local authorities of both countries get involved in projects that are simple yet have great significance. They understand the logic of sharing resources because that way they will have a better quality of life. That is why they want a theatre to be built on one side of the border and a sports complex on the other, to have communal cultural programmes and transport. There are even cases of government agreements that identify perfectly what cross-frontier relationships should be. I’m referring here to the Maternidad Infanta Cristina maternity hospital in Badajoz, where women from a specific district of Portugal go to give birth to their Portuguese children because the maternity clinics have closed in their area. It functions so well and without complications that the European Union has rewarded these citizens with a PET TAC diagnosis machine at the Infanta Cristina (there are five in public hospitals in Spain). Three days a week it is used for patients from the Extremadura region of Spain and two for patients from the Alentejo region of Portugal.

There are times we forget that Portugal is the closest country to Spain from all points of view: geographical, sociological, economic, political and cultural. We forget because we don’t think of Portugal in a natural way. There are even some who overlook the country. It’s not enough that our governments understand each other, but also that we ourselves should understand that Portugal is an ally of ours. Whatever aspect of our life, if we give it an Iberian dimension it becomes richer.

And those who live close to the line realized this a long time ago.

ORMALMENTE AL HABLAR de las relaciones entre España y Portugal caemos en el recurrente tópico de los dos hermanos que durante años vivieron de espaldas y ahora andan felices de la mano. También tendemos a recordar los recelos históricos de los tiempos de la batalla de Aljubarrota o de Felipe II de España y I de Portugal. Y una vez que dejamos los rencores a un lado, y con ambos dentro de la Unión Europea, coincidimos en decir que el futuro ibérico se presenta muy prometedor. Es evidente que casi 25 años después de entrar en Europa, España y Portugal han salido muy beneficiados no solo desde el punto de vista individual sino también desde una perspectiva ibérica. Europa ha servido, entre otras cosas, para unir a estos dos países.

Más que analizar los aspectos de una relación que los políticos aseguran ser mejor que nunca, prefiero hablar de los que para mí son sus verdaderos protagonistas: los ciudadanos transfronterizos. Son muchas las zonas en las que portugueses y españoles están separados por escasos kilómetros pero dada su relación de afecto y proximidad se puede decir que la frontera es prácticamente inexistente. Ellos son ciudadanos con nombre y apellido aunque desconocidos para la gran mayoría de españoles y portugueses. Ellos no entienden de nacionalidad, sino de vecindad y de calidad de vida. Saben aprovechar las oportunidades que tienen a cada lado de una línea invisible.

De ellos nacen propuestas para que las autoridades locales de ambos países se involucren con proyectos sencillos pero de gran significado. Entienden que la lógica lleva a compartir recursos porque así tendrán más calidad de vida. Por eso quieren que se construya un teatro a un lado de la frontera y un polideportivo en el otro, tener programaciones culturales o transporte comunitario.

E incluso hay casos de acuerdos gubernamentales que identifican perfectamente lo que deben ser las relaciones transfronterizas. Me refiero a la Maternidad Infanta Cristina de Badajoz, en donde las mujeres de una zona delimitada de Portugal van a dar allí a luz a sus hijos portugueses porque en su área han cerrado las maternidades. Funciona tan bien y sin complicaciones que la Unión Europea ha premiado a estos ciudadanos con la adjudicación de un PET - TAC al Infanta Cristina (hay cinco en hospitales públicos de España) en donde tres días a la semana se utiliza por pacientes extremeños y dos por pacientes del Alentejo.

A veces nos olvidamos que Portugal es el país más próximo a España desde todos los puntos de vista: geográfico, sociológico, económico, político y cultural. Nos olvidamos porque no pensamos en Portugal de forma natural e incluso hay quien tenga a este país bastante olvidado. No hace falta únicamente que nuestros gobiernos se entiendan sino que seamos nosotros mismos los que entendamos que Portugal es nuestro país aliado. Cualquier aspecto de nuestra vida, si la damos una dimensión ibérica, se enriquece. Y los que viven próximos a La Raya hace mucho tiempo que se dieron cuenta.

The wood of infancy had turned into cement and impersonal buildings, but the dreams kept winding up the spineless rhythm of existence.

Fundación Comillas Enriching the spanish language

T

his year’s course is about to start and Fundación Comillas (Santander) is consolidating itself as the most important centre dedicated to teaching and promoting the language and culture of Spain. On the 9th and 10th of September Fundación Comillas will be holding the “IV Conference on Spanish as a Specialist Language.” The aim of this fourth meeting is to establish an effective communication channel between worldwide business specialists and the needs aired by teachers and researchers in the field of “Spanish language for Specific Needs.” Well-known specialists, including both linguists and experts on Corporate Social Responsibility will gather under the Fundación’s sponsorship. One of the themes that will be presented during the event is the communication problems that arise in corporate businesses. The second theme will focus on finding solutions to the challenges that teaching “Spanish with Specific Needs” presents. Two weeks later, from the 29th of September to the 1st of October, representatives from more than thirty teams of sociolinguistic researchers from Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Argentina, amongst others, will gather in Comillas to share their work. They will bring material compiled during the first phase of the project PRESEEA for the creation of a corpus of the spoken Spanish language that is representative of the Hispanic world in its geographic and social diversity.

he has slept almost all of the way, hardly noticing that we have been driving aimlessly for several kilometres. Though Carolina looks quite rela xed now, the last months “have been ver y hard”, as is hardly sur prising. Being the main character in the ver y demanding Alex de la Iglesia’s film Balada Triste de Trompeta, or working with charismatic Jesus Bonilla in La Daga de Rasputin, requires a daily dose of energy that takes its toll at the end. After struggling with the van through extremely narrow roads, we finally arrived to our destination: an idyllic spot near Guadarrama, a town of Madrid. While the production team and the photographers get on with their work, I read again the CV of this young actress from Tenerife—now resident in Madrid—who I am going to interview on our way back. After making herself known in television programs such as El Intermedio of Gran Wyoming, Carolina has become one of the most promising actresses in Spain, thanks to her work in Pluton BRB Nero, a TV series directed by Alex de la Iglesia, where she per forms the role of Norma, a ver y sexy alien who seduces the whole crew of the spaceship after which the series takes its name.

Bang—which is not an artistic name, but a family name—could be ver y descriptive of this particular moment in her career--“like a shot”—and also of her extremely practical nature, which helps wind up the photographic session in no time at all. After gathering the bulky technical paraphernalia we get back in the van, and bet ween potholes, we start talking about her relationship with Alex de la Iglesia.

“Alex gave me lots of camera experience.

He is a ver y demanding director and will tell you when you do things wrong”, comments the actress that in Balada Triste de Trompeta, plays the role of a trapeze artist over whom t wo circus clowns are fighting. “My character is a trapeze artist in a circus, where there are t wo assassin clowns in love with her. This is one of Alex’s most personal works –the script has been written entirely by him- which places us in Spain´s post Francoist period of the 70s, when Spain was, as Alex puts it, `a circus.´” Balada Triste de Trompeta will be released in time for the Festival of Venice and will be out in the cinemas in Spain by the end of the year, just a few months before the other film that Carolina has starred in this year: La Daga de Rasputin directed by renowned director Jesús Bonilla. During the making of this film, this beautiful blond actress had the opportunity to be filmed in the Red Square in Moscow. “This is the first time that a film has been allowed officially to be shot in the square... and it had to be Spanish!” Carolina doesn’t stop. We can see her in one of the first online Spanish series, Desalmados, and she says she has a lot of projects for 2011, but she won’t give anything away because “it is bad luck”. Before arriving back in Madrid, and with many questions still left in my notebook, I can’t help but ask her if she considers herself to be sexy, to which she replies that “women are sexy by nature.” Bang! That sounded like a shot. Those were the last words we exchanged before saying goodbye after a ver y busy day. Back at Babylon’s editorial office I couldn´t stop listening to that Sinatra’s song that Tarantino brought back to our ears in Kill Bill. Let’s see if I get inspired: Bang! Bang!, Carolina shot me down.

Tras hacer malabarismos con la furgoneta para pasar por caminos peligrosamente estrechos llegamos a la localización deseada, un paraje idílico cercano a la localidad madrileña de Guadarrama.

Mientras el equipo de producción y fotografía comienza la sesión de fotos aprovecho para repasar el currículum de esta joven actriz tinerfeña afincada en Madrid que entrevistaré en el trayecto de vuelta.

Tras darse a conocer en programas de televisión como El Intermedio del Gran Wyoming, Carolina se ha convertido este último año en una de las actrices más prometedoras del panorama nacional gracias a su trabajo en Plutón BRB Nero, una serie de ficción dirigida por Álex de la Iglesia en la que interpreta el papel de Norma, una alienígena muy sexy que vuelve loca a toda la tripulación de la nave espacial que da nombre a la serie. Su apellido Bang -no es artístico, viene de familiapodría describir su momento profesional actual que va ‘como un tiro’ y un carácter práctico que le ayuda a resolver la sesión de fotos en poco tiempo. Después de recoger todo el aparatoso instrumental técnico, nos subimos a la furgoneta y, entre bache y bache, empezamos a charlar sobre su relación con Álex de la Iglesia. “Álex me ha dado mucha experiencia delante de las cámaras. Es un director muy exigente, te dice las cosas cuando lo haces mal”, comenta la artista que en Balada triste de trompeta caracteriza a una trapecista por la que se pelean dos payasos de circo: “Mi personaje es el de una trapecista de un circo de la que están enamorados dos payasos asesinos. Es una de las obras más personales de Alex -de hecho el guión está escrito sólo por él – que nos sitúa en la España tardofranquista de los Setenta, una época que como dice Alex ‘era de circo’ ”. Balada Triste de Trompeta llegará a tiempo para el Festival de Venecia y se estrenará en España a finales de año, pocos meses antes que la segunda película que ha rodado este año Carolina, La Daga de Rasputín. En este filme, dirigido por el veterano director Jesús Bonilla, la guapa actriz rubia ha tenido la suerte de poder rodar en la mismísima Plaza Roja de Moscú: “Es la primera vez que se filma una película de forma oficial la Plaza Roja y… ¡tenía que ser española!”. Carolina no para, la podemos ver en una de las primeras series online españolas, Desalmados, y nos comenta que tiene muchos proyectos para 2011, pero no nos adelanta nada porque le da “mal fario”. Antes de llegar a Madrid, y ya con no muchas más preguntas en la libreta, no puedo evitar preguntarle si se considera una mujer sexy a lo que me responde que “la mujer es sexy por naturaleza”. ¡Bang! Ha sonado como un tiro. Son las últimas palabras que cruzamos antes de despedirnos tras un ajetreado día. Mientras vuelvo a la redacción de Babylon puedo parar de escuchar esa canción de Nancy Sinatra que Tarantino nos devolvió a nuestros oídos en Kill Bill. A ver si me inspira. Bang! Bang!
