In 1956, Koichi Sakuma started the development of the world's first home lockstitch sewing machine, driven by a desire to simplify fabric edge sewing. He began by creating a wooden prototype, and despite facing obstacles, he persisted towards commercializing the edge-sewing machine. In 1963, the prototype was completed and started moving towards commercialization. The machine’s petite appearance led to the adoption of the renowned "baby lock" brand which made its worldwide debut in February 1968 as the "baby lock EF-205.” This revolutionary machine evolved under Sakuma's innovative leadership, developing features like the "Automatic Threading Delivery System" and the "Looper Air Threading." Today, Baby Lock’s development continues to uphold a philosophy of craftsmanship and innovation led by Sakuma’s son, Toru Sakuma.

Gudrun Erla
Gudrun Erla is the founder, designer, and owner of GE Designs and was born and raised in Iceland. She started quilting at the age of 23. After owning and running quilt shops in her home country and designing patterns along the way, quilting brought her to Minnesota in 2003. Since then, Gudrun has been designing full time, publishing patterns and books from just west of the Twin Cities.
Gudrun loves to take traditional ideas and put a little bit of a modern spin on them. All her patterns and books are geared toward today’s quilt makers, easy and innovative with a modern touch. She has published patterns and books as well as designed groundbreaking tools for quilting for years, including the bestselling Stripology rulers.
n WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THIS KIT?
The first ever pattern I designed and published was a quilt as you go pattern and it has been my top seller through the years. Being able to quilt a project as you are piecing and getting to use it right away is a gratifying experience for experienced quilters and beginners alike.
When I got my first Baby Lock machine, I was blown away by the digital dual feed foot as it was the most amazing tool for my quilt as you go patterns. I felt this was the perfect method to share with the Baby Lock community for that reason and because quilt as you go is a great way to enter the quilting world.
n WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FEATURE ON BABY LOCK MACHINES?
There are so many things to love about my Solaris and Chorus machines. In general, I love the ease of use, the smoothness of the stitches, the programming capabilities, durability and large throat space. What takes my Baby Locks to the absolute top is the digital dual feed foot, in my opinion the best I've ever seen, and the built-in lasers for piecing corner to corner.
n WHAT KIND OF SEWIST WOULD BENEFIT FROM USING THIS KIT?
This kit is great for all skill levels of quilters but also for complete beginners. The technique, combined with the video class is going to give a total beginner all the tools to finish the project.
