FALL 2025

Maybe you aim to improve your public speaking or enhance your collaboration skills. Maybe you’re looking to carve out a spot on campus that reminds you of the quiet space at home where you write and paint. Is this the year you join a creative club and produce an event? Or is this the year you fall in love with a new artistic outlet?
Our team at BabsonARTS is thrilled to offer these opportunities and more through our creative community. This year I have the privilege of continuing our eclectic programming through a fresh lens, immersing myself among fellow Babson College creatives, and lifting our collective spirits with a refreshing overflow of artistic opportunities. I follow in impressive footsteps as Leslie Chiu moves on to her next chapter at Babson College as Associate Dean, Campus Life, after eight years of leadership with BabsonARTS. I am proud to inherit this flourishing department and thrilled at the opportunity of what we can continue to bring to our already robust and enriching campus.
We could not bring you all the wonderful offerings in this pamphlet without the continued generosity of the Sorenson family. As such, we proudly begin this school year with the newly named Richard & Sandra Sorenson Center for the Arts that we unveiled last Spring. When you come to watch a film or step onstage in the Carling-Sorenson Theater this year, we hope you will enjoy some of the updates and reworkings of our flagship space. Whatever this year brings, don’t let the arts at Babson College pass you by.

Clown Workshop with Julia Marcelis ’27
Thursday, September 18, 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.
Carling-Sorenson Theater
FREE. Open to current Babson, Olin, and Wellesley students, faculty and staff only.
Embrace your inner Fool! Come explore the basics of clowning in an exciting workshop covering character work, physical comedy and the fundamentals of slapstick including fake fighting and tripping. Participants will engage in a thorough facial warmup and gain experience showing off big emotions. By the end of this workshop, participants will have a deeper understanding of physical comedy and clowning by exploring the clown nose: “the world’s smallest mask” in a supportive and low-pressure environment. Those interested in theater will better understand how the clown’s focus on emotion can bring new dimensions to acting. No experience necessary and each participant will receive their own clown nose. Julia Marcelis is a clown, aerialist, jack of all trades, and a proud graduate of the San Francisco Circus Center’s Youth Circus. Their fifteen years of training in circus arts has taken them across the country, working with clowns from Cirque du Soleil, the Big Apple Circus, and the Ringling Bros’ Greatest Show on Earth. Offstage, their commitment to increasing inclusivity in the circus industry led them to serving as Co-Treasurer of CSAW Circus.

Global Film Series: I’m Still Here
Directed by Walter Salles
Monday, October 6, 7:00 P.M.
Carling-Sorenson Theater
FREE and open to the public. Registration encouraged. Walk-ins welcome.
Directed by Walter Salles, one of Brazil’s most celebrated filmmakers, the 2025 Oscar-winner I’m Still Here poignantly explores the haunting disappearance of Congressman Rubens Paiva, who was among the thousands of tortured and disappeared individuals during the military dictatorship from 1964-1985. The film is most powerful in its ability to reveal human resilience in the face of dramatic uncertainty and loss. Drawing from the real-life memoir of Paiva’s son, I’m Still Here points its lens on a family’s capacity to lean into joy alongside fear, hope in the midst of sorrow. The film evokes contemporary concerns in many places around the world as it considers what happens when a good life collides with political and social forces.
Post-film discussion will be held immediately following the screening.
Co-presented by the Global Film Series and the Arts and Humanities Division.
The Empty Space Theater presents Ada
A PLAY BY AENEAS SAGAR HEMPHILL

October 23 and 25, 7:00 P.M.
October 24, 2:00 P.M.
Carling-Sorenson Theater
Tickets $5 at babsonarts.org

In a not-so-distant future, Ada, a worker of artificial intelligence, disrupts her workplace’s carefully maintained power dynamics by becoming a little too human to contain. Joan, her superior and creator, must then reckon with the consequences of her influence on Ada while at the same time attempting to suppress the rebellious urges of her daughter, Amy. Ada follows these women, their family, and coworkers as they confront the imperfections of their “perfect” world.
The Empty Space Theater (TEST) is the faculty-led theater company co-sponsored by BabsonARTS and the Division of Arts and Humanities. Led by Artistic Director and Professor Beth Wynstra, TEST’s objective is to produce socially relevant, thought-provoking and compelling plays and musicals to strengthen and formalize curricular ties in ways rewarding to both participants and audiences.
