Extreme Reading!

We had some amazing entries in the Pre Prep Extreme Reading Photo Competition: reading in wheelie bins, in trees, on supermarket shelves and even underwater! It really was very difficult to pick winners however, the judging panel picked the following winners: Shaan in Kindergarten, Elizabeth and Jude in Reception, Ariel in Year 1 and Ella in Year 2.

Early Years

Open Morning Earlier this term the Pre Prep welcomed Early Years’ parents to their special Open Morning. It was lovely to see such big smiles on the children’s faces as they proudly shared their fantastic work with their families.

Year 2 visit the Midland Air Museum Year 2 visited the Midland Air Museum as part of their topic on transport and Sir Frank Whittle. A fantastic time was had by all with museum staff commenting on the children’s impeccable manners and behaviour.Thank you to Mrs Sawdon for organising such an exciting trip!

Early Years Open Morning!

World Book Day All Pre Prep teachers and pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters and donated £1 to Book Aid International on World Book Day. In every class a specific text was selected with lessons throughout the day linked to the text - with lots of creative ideas being shared! The children also took part in a book swap where they wrapped up books from home to share in the class lucky dip.

As well as of activities on the day the Pre Prep children were involved in a range of other activities.They sold raffle tickets all week for the children to be in with a chance to win a book hamper.

In total the Pre Prep managed to raise just over £180 from the raffle, which will buy lots of new books for children in Africa.

World Book Day at the Pre Prep ended with ‘The Big Read’, where the children got to listen to the teachers read in various places around the school. A fun filled day for all!

The Great British Weather!

Magic Movers Magic Movers is a music and movement club which promotes healthy living. Mrs Mohindra’s ‘Magic Movers’ club enjoyed performing their club dance to the whole school as part of Healthy Lifestyle week at the Pre Prep.

Earlier this term Kindergarten pupils had a fantastic morning playing in the (very small amount of) snow!

In stark contrast our Reception classes recently enjoyed outdoor play and learning on a beautiful spring afternoon.

Healthy

Eating Week Pre Prep pupils and staff learnt all about how to be healthy during their Healthy Eating Week.

Teachers talked to pupils in lessons and assemblies about healthy lifestyles and everyone learnt lots of interesting and fun things about healthy living. Pupils played games such as, ‘What’s in the box?’, and even had a fruity photo booth, that staff also enjoyed!

Pre Prep children were sent home with food diaries, along with games and challenges.They got to have a go at food tasting, daily morning exercises, a healthy eating poster competition, and much more! Thank you to parents for all your support with encouraging the children to taste ‘new’ foods, have a balanced diet and make healthy choices.

New School Council Announced At the end of last term Pre Prep pupils voted for their new School Council representatives.The democratic process saw a new set of school council members being elected by their peers.The school council plays a key role at the Pre Prep allowing pupils to share their ideas on how to make our school a better place.

During the term Mrs Cook chairs meetings with the School Council and helps to facilitate their discussions and develop ideas.The role of a School Council member is a very important one and they have done an excellent job so far this term.

The Adventures of Paddy and Tickle This term Bablake Pre Prep welcomed two new classmates into Reception - Paddy and Tickle!

Paddy and Tickle are our new class Teddies.The children have been so excited to see the mischief that Paddy and Tickle get up to. Since joining Reception they have been busy exploring the Pre Prep (sometimes when no one is watching!).Their teddy bear adventures have inspired Pre Prep pupils and the children have produced some brilliant writing in class.

Charity To help to fundraise for Zoë’s Place Bablake pupils were given ‘Paws for Thought’ coin holders, which had room for 12 £1 coins. Pupils took their coin holders home and for every good deed they delivered they were rewarded with a £1 donation.This not only gave them a purpose to help others, but they too have been rewarded by helping a local children’s hospice.

Although the majority of the money raised was through the ‘Paws for Thought’ coin holders, the school topped up their fundraising with a pyjama day which raised over £300.00.

After last terms successful fundraising we were delighted to welcome Blake, the Guide Dog sponsored by Bablake, to school.We hope to see lots more of him as he grows up!

Both the Pre Prep and Junior School have been eggperiencing the delight of watching chicks hatch in school!

Zoe’s Place Bablake Junior and Pre Prep School have raised a staggering £1600.00 for Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice in Coventry!

A New Addition to Bablake

Bablake Junior teacher Miss Shorter, who coordinated the fundraising efforts with the BJS School Council, commented, “We are delighted to have raised so much money for Zoë’s Place and we are really proud of all our pupil’s efforts.The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed spending the day in our pyjamas and had great fun welcoming the Zoë’s Place bear into school”.

Both schools have been following the progress of our little chicks with great egg-citement.The eggs arrived on Monday and by Wednesday afternoon we had 19 little chirpy chicks who are doing well and enjoying lots of love and attention from our pupils.

Jane McGaffney, Community Fundraiser for Zoë’s Place, said, “I am absolutely delighted and amazed at how much the pupils raised in such a short time and also the dedication they have shown in their ability to help others.They are an absolute credit to the school and their families, especially considering they age from 3 to 11 it really is a remarkable achievement.We can’t thank them enough for their effort and in making a difference to the hospice”.

Nose Day

It was fabulous to see so many children coming to school wearing red.With donations, cake sales and sales of red noses, we raised £1002.75 for Comic Relief across the Junior School and Pre Prep.

The Music Department was thrilled to host another successful two weeks with a Gamelan in our rehearsal room.

The Gamelan is a collection of Indonesian percussion instruments and has been provided by Mr John Pawson to the great delight of our pupils who spent their music lessons learning how to play these amazing instruments.

Concert Success

House Singing Competition This term we had the eagerly anticipated House Singing Competition.There was a constant stream of music in the air at BJS as our three houses, Churchill, Eliot and Nelson, practised their singing ready for their performances.

On the Friday before half-term, the whole of BJS headed to the theatre to take part in the singing competition.

Senior School Head of Music, Mr Crompton, was the guest judge who had the unenviable task of choosing the winner.

who with great gusto performed Ben E King’s, Stand By Me. Closing the show Churchill came to the stage with the most upbeat song of the morning, Can’t Stop The Feeling!, by Justin Timberlake, their performance even included some break dancing!

After three fantastic performances, Mr Crompton came to the stage to deliver his verdict. He firstly congratulated everyone on their performances and explained

what he enjoyed about each song. He also told us what he thought made a good performance which included entry and exit onto the stage, stage presence and having the confidence to make a performance your own.

It was with these things in mind that he announced Eliot as the winners!

Well done to everyone involved and thank you to Mr Crompton for being our judge.

Parents and pupils were treated to an excellent afternoon concert with a variety of performances from pupils across the school.

From violin and flute solos to beautiful upbeat singing from the choir, the eclectic mix was appreciated by all who attended.

BJS in the Classroom Year 3 Ancient Egyptian Day

Potter Mad! ‘It is often asked whether a Muggle could create a magic potion, given a potions book and the right ingredients.The answer, unfortunately, is no.’

Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic afternoon learning all about Ancient Egypt. Each class learnt about mummification and got to make cartouche book marks, using hieroglyphics to write their names, pyramids and Egyptian collars.Thank you to Year 3 teachers and the Herbert Museum for a truly inspiring afternoon!

Passover Year 4 were treated to a lesson from Ros Johnson who very kindly came into school to teach the children about the Jewish festival – Passover. She told the story of the Exodus from Egypt and showed everyone her Seder plate, with the six things that help remind her of this story at Pesach.The children then enjoyed the opportunity to make their own plates!

Maths Challenge – Bonus Round!

Six BJS pupils scored 19 or more in the first round of the national Schools Maths Challenge and were invited to participate in the bonus round competition.The six pupils did extremely well to get to this stage – well done to them all, and a special mention to Arjun, who was a Bronze medal winner!

This useful piece of information from Pottermore was very apparent at Bablake Junior School whenYear 4 welcomed a witch to help them create a magic potion in their Potions lesson.

Bake Off This term Year 4 took part in their very own ‘Bablake Bake Off ’.

Pupils made sure they measured out all the ingredients correctly to produce the best bake!

Marvellous Maths Mindset BJS pupils had a great time developing their Maths skills during two ‘Maths Mindset’ days.The whole of BJS focused solely on Maths, with a selection of workshops, quizzes and challenges over the two days.Thank you to Miss Love for all her hard work in coordinating this fantastic experience.

Luckily the witch wasn’t as scary as Professor Snape but she did bring with her some rather creepy and scary ingredients!

The children were chosen one by one to help the witch put the ingredients into a large glass vial - from pixie dust to

werewolf hair - they were very brave and the visiting witch was very impressed with their potion making skills.

As the last ingredient was added, the children, led by the witch, chanted a growing potion spell - and it worked! The gruesome green potion grew and grew and grew until it spilt out of its container in a bubbling mass of white foam...a perfect growing potion had been made!

Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed their recent English topic - here they are showing off their brilliant Harry Potter inspired scrapbooks!

After the excitement of their potions lessons,Year 4 went back to their classes to write up instructions on how to produce a potion to make things grow.

The Big Bang Science Fair at the NEC was enjoyed by Year 6 for its memorable and spectacular displays. Our pupils were commended for their excellent behaviour in a crowded public arena.

Thank you Miss Young for organising the trip – pupils really appreciated being involved in such a big STEM event during National Science Week.

The Year 5 visit to Holdenby House at the end of last term was another great success.

Pupils experienced life as a Victorian in the classroom and in the home.They were even put to work washing clothes and cleaning kitchens!

We all had a great time learning about how to keep safe in different situations, like on the road, in the home and by the railway. We even got to put our partners in the recovery position and make a 999 call!

Inspires BJS Pupils Year 4, 5 and 6 girls enjoyed an inspirational netball workshop with Wasps and South Africa star Bongiwe Msomi and staff connected with the newly formed Wasps Netball Vitality Superleague Team.

Each year group enjoyed an hour of drills and games inside our Sports

Hall with Bongiwe Msomi. Mrs Reed (Head of Girls’ PE) was delighted with the amount of skills and tips that were included in the sessions.

As well as the drills, the girls were keen to grab an autograph or two after the sessions!

Year 6 pupils visited the Ricoh Arena for a Netball Development Day ahead of the Wasps Netball teams first Superleague match.

The girls met their netball heroes as Tamsin Greenway (ex. England Captain and Wasps Head Coach) led a welcome with Wasps players in support. After a morning of drills, fun activities and tips from the professionals the girls were treated to autographs and a photo to end a great experience for all involved.

YEAR 5 WASPS RUGBY DAY Bablake School welcomed Wasps Rugby to its playing fields as it hosted a rugby day for local primary schools.

The day started with a focus on safety, as all players were fitted with mouth guards ready for a day of contact rugby. Inspired by the recent Six Nations performances, the children involved were ready and raring to go as Bablake and Wasps rugby coaches led a morning of training.

Refuelled by a hearty lunch, the schools split into teams in the afternoon with each team assigned a specific coach. After some final training, the teams showed off their new skills in a mini-festival of matches.The achievements of the teams were then celebrated with a presentation as spectators and children enjoyed the end of an excellent day of rugby.There were some super prizes handed out to thoroughly deserving young players.

Thank you to all the schools that attended, to Wasps Rugby and to Bablake’s Junior and Senior School rugby coaches, especially Messrs Benfield, Burdett and Wilson for arranging the day.

Netball 2017 Netball at Bablake Junior School continues to go from strength to strength.This has to be one of the most successful netball seasons recorded with 10 of our school teams playing over 88 games in matches and tournaments.

The Bablake U11A, B, C and D teams remain unbeaten in friendly fixtures against other school’s Year 6 teams and recorded 29 victories during the season whilst scoring a magnificent 311 goals in total and conceding only 124.The U10A team were victorious in 10 of their 12 matches.The U10B team won all of their 11 matches convincingly, scoring 134 goals and conceding only 17.The U10C and D teams also impressed and won 4 of their 5 games.

Our U9A and B teams recorded a fantastic achievement in their first season of competitive matches, with both teams winning all 8 games.The A team scored a total of 58 goals and conceded only 18 and the B team scored 56 goals and only conceded 8.

The U11A team squad have competed in two tournaments this term and against tough opposition can be proud of finishing as runners up and silver medallists of the Rugby School Tournament. Despite not playing at their best against opponents they have previously comfortably beaten, with 3 games won, 1 draw and a narrow 4-5 goals defeat, the squad took 3rd place in the recent KHPS Tournament.

The U10A team squad played exceptionally well in their first ever tournament at Bromsgrove School this term.They defeated teams from Warwick Prep, Fairfield, Bromsgrove Prep and Winterfold to reach the final.

Although they were unable to maintain their winning ways, they deserved their runners up position and silver medals.

In March, the Wasps South African International Netball Player, Bongiwe Msomi, delivered a practical skills session

to our Year 4, 5 and 6 players. Hopefully this will inspire our players to reach even greater heights in their netball careers.

More recently all Year 4, 5 and 6 girls have been competing enthusiastically in our Inter House Netball matches.

Congratulations to Year 6 winners Nelson,Year 5 winners Churchill and Year 4 winners Nelson.

As the netball season comes to an end for another school year, thanks must go to parents, who have supported the teams at fixtures and tournaments throughout the last two terms.

On a final note to all, this success is only possible with the enthusiasm and hard-working ethos of our players who have been a delight to teach and coach in lessons, practices and clubs throughout the year. I am sure they will achieve even greater success in the future.

U11 Rugby School Tournament Bablake Junior School came runners-up in the Rugby School Netball Prep Tournament after a fantastic day of netball.

Ten Year 6 girls, alongside coaches Mrs Reed and Miss Hingley, headed to Rugby School for a morning of Netball coaching followed by a tournament in the afternoon.

In the morning the girls were split into eight different groups to take part in drills led by coaches from various netball backgrounds - including current and ex Superleague players and the current Wasps U19 coach (much to

Emily’s delight as she managed to get a signature to add to her collection!).

Enjoying playing netball in the sun (a rare occasion!), the girls showed off their skills and had an enjoyable morning which warmed them up nicely for the afternoon tournament.

The girls got off to an excellent start winning their first two matches, 13-0 and 7-0 respectively, with impressive shooting from Libby S and Libby H. Their third match, against Milton Keynes, proved more of a challenge and the girls were up by the slightest of margins until in the last two minutes they turned over two centre passes, helped by the determination shown by Beth and Shannon, to win 7-4.With legs tiring and going into their third match in a row, the girls came up against the willowy and ‘taller than a Senior School team’, Berkhamsted School.

Tiffany, our fantastic GK, took on the coaches advice and made things difficult for the opposition with interception after interception, however, with tired arms and legs the girls struggled to get the ball down court and a very good Berkhamsted team picked up on our errors to take home a 6-0 win.

Having won 3/4 matches in the group stage we were through to the semi-finals.

The coaches decided to bring on fresh legs with Charlotte and Connie coming on at GD and C.The girls fought hard during the match, throwing themselves into every interception and putting in 110%, which led them to a 3-3 draw and saw them head into extra time.They got off to a good start, scoring a goal in the first minute, with time ticking and Tiffany guarding the goal brilliantly, the girls managed to hold onto the lead to win 1-0, taking us through to the final!

Meeting us in the final were the unbeaten team of Berkhamsted. Having already lost 6-0 to the same team we knew it was going to be a tough match, the girls went out fighting and came away as tournament runners-up after a very close final, which finished 3-1 to Berkhamsted.

Huge congratulations to the girls for reaching the final and for being a credit to the Junior School.

Bablake Junior School U11 Football Team walked away victorious from The Coventry Schools 4 a-Side Football Finals.

The team had a fantastic run in the lead up to the finals and went out confident that they could continue their winning streak. Mr Benfield, Head of Boys Sport at Bablake Junior, praised the boys’ efforts as they emerged from the finals as Champions over the 40 other schools that entered the competition. Huge congratulations to all involved, it was a brilliant day of participation, performance and Bablake spirit.

Here come the Girls…

The BJS U11 Girls Football team also reached the 4 a-side finals for the first time in BJS history! Having impressed in the previous rounds, with Daisy scoring a multitude of goals, the girls took to the pitch with a different line up to their usual team, as many of the Year 6 girls were unavailable due to the Hockey Finals taking place at the same time.The team came away from the finals having put their all into their matches and will definitely be the ones to watch next year!

Bablake Runners Shine in Top Company!

Coventry Schools Cross Country Relays The day had dawned sunny and bright and almost three hundred young athletes arrived in perfect conditions to represent their schools in the Coventry Schools Cross Country Relays, once again held at the Bablake School fields.

The day kicked off with the Mixed Race – boy, girl, boy, girl - and Willenhall led from start to finish. After a blistering first lap their lead was never threatened and they led Manor Park home by several lengths. Ernesford Grange emerged from the pack to take third place with Bablake and St Thomas More not far behind.

The Girls Relay followed and this allowed Bablake to reassert themselves after their runners up spot last year.They led from the start and left Holy Family,Willenhall and Manor Park scrapping for the remaining podium spots. In the end Holy Family prevailed with Willenhall and Manor Park tying for third place. It was good to see Grange Farm and Coundon pushing through not far behind and to see the Bablake B Team from Year 4 actually coming home in third place. Sadly for them they only enjoyed the glory, not the medals!

The Boys Relay was spectacular with the lead changing hands three times over the last lap.

Hearsall had started the final kilometre in first place with Sacred Heart in second. By the end Blessings from Holy Family had smoked them all in spectacular fashion, taking the gold medal and leaving the spectators, and all the other runners, gasping in admiration. Bablake’s Giacomo had surged to the front from third place half way round, but he was helpless to react as Blessings turned on the after-burners as the finish approached.This was a fantastic climax to a great race with over a hundred boys running hard for their schools. Bablake’s B Team put in a great effort to secure fifth place, auguring well for the future.

With three different schools taking the main honours and six schools medalling, this was a exhilarating mornings cross-country. Over thirty Coventry schools had teams competing and once again Carol Reese and the Coventry Primary Schools Sports Committee are to be commended for putting together an opportunity none of those taking part will ever forget. Great team spirit prevailed and from first to last, everyone was cheered home.

Girls’

Hockey Report Coventry Schools Boys’ Cross Country Report A soggy Saturday saw record numbers of boys from across Coventry take part in the annual Coventry Schools Boys’ Cross Country Event.

The rain held off for long enough to ensure the almost 500 runners and an equal number of spectators were treated to outstanding competition from some of the city’s most talented youngsters.

The day started with the A Race.Teams of six from 38 primary schools set off at great pace.The fast start, essential for getting and staying near the front, brought sprinting and jostling to the course. Leading the Bablake team was Giacomo, who traded places with his old rival Ruskin from Hearsall throughout their pursuit of the eventual winner from Holy Family. Runners from different schools made up the first 10 places.The Bablake team of Ray, Laurence Bez, Dylan and Rhys showed great determination to secure the winners’ spot in the team competition. Runners’ scores are added up and each place affects the overall position of both their team and the others, as a place gained for one runner is a placed lost to another. Every place mattered and the Bablake Boys had recognised this, battling past several runners in the final sprint to the line.

The B Race was another closely fought affair with Bablake’s Jake taking third place and leading home the team. Bablake’s support runners did a fantastic job and Kingston, Sebastian and Tom finished in the top 10.These finishes meant that our team score beat that of Manor Park to take top spot. It was great to see so many young Bablake runners making up the B Team; we look forward to seeing them continue their success in the future.

It was fantastic to witness so many boys out there on a cold Saturday in December, running their hearts out and giving their all for their teams. Everyone involved can take great credit from completing this challenging event - well done to all who took part.

Hockey at BJS has continued to flourish this term.The U11 A team has gone from strength to strength, qualifying for the Regional Finals of the National In2Hockey competition. In regular fixtures they have only conceded 2 goals since November which were against the Senior School U12 team to whom they lost 2-1, their only defeat!

Overall they have scored 42 goals and conceded only 5.This is an indication of the quality, commitment and teamwork that all the girls have shown and every member of the team has played an integral part in this success.

Connie has made some outstanding saves in goal backed up by the determination of Charlotte and Shannon, whose resolve in the tackle has been first class. In the midfield Imogen and Libby have formed a powerful partnership with Imogen’s ball distribution and Libby’s power creating numerous goal scoring opportunities. On the wings Emily and Sophia have proved to be a feisty pair never giving up in attack and stretching the opposition defence with skilful runs and crosses.

The U11 B team have also had great success again only losing 1 fixture in our regular calendar scoring an average of 3 goals per game.The U10 girls have shown great promise for next year having proved to be prolific goal scorers with an average of 5 goals per game.

It has been a particular pleasure to teach and coach all of the girls this year, to watch them gain confidence, develop their skills and in particular their teamwork. It has made my last year most enjoyable. I wish them all continued success in sport.

Junior School’s Chess Success The 2016-17 Chess Season proved to be Bablake Junior’s most successful to date.

Competing in division two of the Coventry School’s league.

Bablake Junior are the only junior school in the league, fielding two teams drawing players from all four year groups.This means that our players always compete against Senior School opposition from Bablake, Henry VIII and Campion School.

On several occasions, Year 3 and 4 children have played Sixth formers!

This year Bablake A team won all of their fixtures apart from the final game of the season- playing away at Campion.

Although we finished on the same number of points as Campion School, we finished second in the league on board count (a bit like goal difference!). In fact, Campion secured just one more board across the whole of the season- the narrowest of margins.

Bablake B team have also progressed well and picked up a well-deserved victory at Henry VIII this year. Both teams have played super chess and they should feel hugely proud of their achievements! A special mention should be given to Chess captains Arjan and Harry - both boys have played since Year 3 and have been a real asset to the team.

Orienteering Sibling Success!

A story of success for three BJS siblings at the Memorial Park Schools Orienteering Competition.

Giacomo (Y6), Oriana (Y4) and Sebastian (Y3), entered the Octavian Droobers competition on a whim as they attended the competition with their family.With Oriana and Sebastian doing exceptionally well against older pupils in the Year 5 competition and with Giacomo taking first place in the Year 6 competition, they all had a great day of orienteering.

Adding to their individual success they also took home the Primary School Team Competition first prize on behalf of Bablake Junior School. A fantastic achievement.Well done to the superstar siblings!

Boys’ Sport Report Football 2017 Football continues to thrive at Bablake Junior School despite the City team and the international team struggling this season! 80 fixtures have been played against other schools this term with all the boys representing the school.The results have been exceptional with a particular mention going to the U11 teams who have played 30 matches and only lost one!

The U8 team are full of enthusiasm and show that strong defending can lead to success.Two wins and three draws prove that there is real talent in the group and that their future looks bright. It has also been really pleasing to have a large number of B and C team fixtures where everyone in Year 3 has represented the school with great effort, determination and skill.

The U9 team have also performed well this year with excellent wins against the Croft (4-1) and Solihull (4-2). Both A and B teams have really improved this year and really try to work hard as a team.

The U10 teams have exceeded expectations and as a group having played 12 matches and only losing four.

The A team were rewarded with excellent victories against King Henry VIII (6-3) and Eversfield (3-2).

The U11s have be an exceptional year group throughout their time at Bablake and have again excelled.Winning the Coventry Primary Schools 4 a-side tournament was an unbelievable achievement.

The final will live long in the memory as after being 3-1 down, with 3 minutes to go, the boys came back to win 4-3 with the final kick of the game! Their performance showed great determination to fight to the end. Another fantastic highlight was taking five teams to Warwick School for a round robin festival with four other independent schools. All five teams came away from this festival undefeated (won 11, drew 5 and lost 0), which again shows our strength in depth!

Well done to everyone who has contributed to this great success.
