As we teach our boys to be positive leaders and engaged citizens, they have a tremendous model to emulate in the dedicated generosity of Crescent School’s supporters. Your commitment to our vision for boys’ education is extraordinary. On behalf of all of my colleagues, thank you.

One of my most powerful learnings last year was just how much people care about Crescent. Some experience it as a vibrant community, others participate in it as a dynamic workplace, but overwhelmingly, most people feel it deeply as a family. The breadth and depth to the Crescent experience is unlike anything I have encountered before – an experience that emphasizes human relationships, deeply held traditions and core values.

Every family contains a myriad of priorities and interests. For Crescent, we consolidated these in our Strategic Plan – a five-fold focus on student learning, staff development, community engagement, facility enhancement and technological innovation. As we near the midway point of our plan, I am thrilled at what we have completed to date, especially the expansion of Crescent Student Services, the focus on health and wellbeing programs for students and staff, and the range of alumni relations programs. The generosity of the Crescent family played a key part in this, and your support is greatly appreciated.

Your support also provided the essential foundation for the work immediately ahead of us, as we share our Portrait of a Graduate and develop a Master Facilities Plan. There will be exciting opportunities for your generosity to continue to support our mission, Men of Character from Boys of Promise.

M E S S A G E F R O M J O H N LY N C H P ’ 1 6 , ’ 1 8 EXECUTIVE DIREC T OR , E X T ERN A L R E LATIO N S The External Relations Office is comprised of three administrative departments – Advancement, Marketing and Communications, and Enrolment and Financial Aid. I work closely with the three Directors – Jill Cannon in Advancement, Lynda Torneck in MarComm and David Shaw in Enrolment.

The mission of our External Relations office is to boldly and compellingly communicate Crescent’s mission so that we recruit outstanding, mission-fit boys and families, and engage them in life-long relationships that keep them emotionally connected and financially committed to their school.

Specifically, the mission of the Advancement Office is as follows – Through volunteerism, philanthropy, stewardship, and strong alumni and parent relationships, we strive to develop understanding and engagement among our various constituents in order to strengthen and grow our programs, and ensure the financial support and enthusiasm required to fulfill the School’s mission and strategic plan.

This Donor Report accounts for gifts made from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. As always, we sincerely thank each and every donor who made a financial contribution to the School during this period. You make us a better institution, and we are very grateful.

Highlights from the 2016/17 fiscal year include: • $4.1 million pledged in new commitments to the School and The Foundation, including $3.1 million in major gift commitments and over $1 million in support of Parent Annual Giving, including many double up and triple up commitments • Board-approved 5-year Development Plan with our newly revamped Development Committee • Very successful Reunion Giving program involving graduating Classes ending in 2s and 7s • Increased Faculty & Staff Annual Giving participation from 48% in FY16 to 71% in FY17 including 100% participation from the Leadership Team I would like to thank Stuart Raftus P’17, ’18, ’23, ’26, Chair of the Development Committee and Governor, along with all members of the Development Committee, for their great work this year. I would also like to thank my great team in External Relations for their work and dedication to the School.

FROM J A M I E C OU LT E R ’ 8 7 , P ’2 1 CHAIR, CRESCENT ALUMNI EXECUTIVE I am proud to report that 2016/17 was another successful year for the Crescent Alumni Executive and for the many and varied programs we offer to the alumni community we have the privilege of serving.

The Alumni Executive are a tremendous group of dedicated men who work tirelessly on behalf of Crescent’s graduates, young and old.

Highlights of 2016/17: • Hosting an incredible 30 alumni events across the GTA, Canada and the world; including welcoming over 100 alumni at our Downtown Networking Event in Toronto in December and almost 200 alumni at our Alumni Reunion in May • Partnering with some incredible employers for our young alumni and giving them a chance at a meaningful summer employment internship opportunity. A particular highlight was sending two young alumni to Melbourne, Australia to work at an accounting firm started by Peter Lalor ’92.

• Raising over $30,000 at our Crescent School Golf Tournament, an event hosted by the alumni, for student financial aid, which is the most money raised to date at this event • Launching our new Alumni Recognition Program, giving us an opportunity to celebrate and showcase the incredible work our alumni are doing in their lives, at Crescent and in their communities • Celebrating my 30th Crescent reunion with my fellow Class of ’87 alumni and raising over $120,000 to bring our Class fund, The Pat Mills Family Class of ’87 Fund, to over $850,000 in support of endowed student financial aid • Seeing a number of other classes raise funds in honour of their reunion, including the Class of ’92, who in honour of their 25th reunion, raised over $65,000 for student financial aid I want to take this opportunity to offer my thanks, on behalf of the Alumni Executive Committee, to the Advancement Office, for their great work and support throughout 2016/17. In particular, I’d like to thank Kathryn Foster and Katie Watt, who work tirelessly on our behalf. This was my first year serving the alumni community as Chair and I continue to enjoy the work that we have been doing as a group to enhance the overall Crescent alumni experience.

M E SSAGE FROM VI J AY PA RMA R P’ 1 8 C H A I R O F T H E C R E S C E N T S C H O O L F O U N D AT I O N As at June 30, 2017, The Crescent School Foundation achieved a year-end value of more than $12.9 million, its highest year-end closing ever. The increase of $1.3 million from the previous fiscal year is due to new donations and market gains. New donations were directed towards Student Financial Aid, Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund, Robotics and Technology, Crescent Student Services, Prize Day Awards, as well as Local and International Outreach.

I’d like to offer a special thank you to the graduates and parents of the Class of 2017 who established The Class of 2017 Facilities Endowment which will support capital enhancements on our campus in the years of come.

In FY 2016/17, The Foundation disbursed $317,000 in support of various School programs with approximately 65% directed by our generous donors in support of needs-based Student Financial Aid. This annual disbursement continues in perpetuity ensuring critical funding to key programmatic areas that directly benefit our boys.

The Foundation’s Directors review quarterly and annual financials, and establish and review investment and disbursement policies, as well as the firms we employ to manage Foundation funds, in an effort to preserve and grow the Foundation’s assets in the long term. Your donations are incredibly important to ensure the sustainability of the School’s programs and we take our stewardship responsibility in this regard very seriously. We hope we will continue to receive your trust and confidence in the years ahead.

As always, I encourage you to consider supporting The Foundation and, in particular, Student Financial Aid. All donations receive a charitable gift receipt from The Crescent School Foundation, for tax purposes.

I’d like to thank former Directors Patrick Burke, Mark Jenkins and Gavin Higgs for their years of service to The Foundation, and the Advancement and Finance Offices at Crescent School for their hard work on behalf of The Foundation.

While tuition covers the cost of fundamental school operations, it is the generosity of giving through charitable gifts that provide the much-needed support for new facilities, enhancements to our signature academic programs and additional funds for Student Financial Aid. I am truly proud of the rich heritage of generosity that has existed at Crescent School in support of our children’s educational experience.

All of the facilities on campus that our boys benefit from each and every day are the direct result of the generosity of current and past parents, alumni and grandparents. They have supported the School to ensure we can evolve with the changing needs of a future Crescent education. I feel deeply that it is the responsibility of every generation of Crescent families to do the same, and support the School for current AND future boys of promise.

Our Parent Annual Giving program, which raised over $1 million in 2016/17, with 75% participation, is the most successful program of its kind among our peer schools in the GTA. Last year, funds from Parent Annual Giving supported Board-approved initiatives, including special projects, Student Financial Aid, the Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund and the development of a Master Facilities Plan, which are not covered by tuition.

Our community continues to be generous, resulting in over $4.1 million in new pledges and $3.3 million in paid pledge donations. At this time, the majority of our major gift fundraising is directed towards needs-based Student Financial Aid, which relates directly to the School’s current 2015-2020 Strategic Plan.

I am so very proud to be part of the Crescent School family, which year after year, continues to inspire me with its generosity, encouragement, commitment and love for this School. I am also privileged to serve on the Board of Governors and as Chair of the Development Committee, both of which are comprised of committed and hard-working volunteers, and I thank each of them for their efforts over the last year.
