Crescent is a special place. Our dedicated faculty and staff devote countless hours within and beyond the classroom servicing our mission and our boys.

Our campus houses tremendous resources where our boys learn and grow in spaces that encourage discovery, creativity and community. Our alumni are active in the Crescent brotherhood long after they leave our halls.

But perhaps what makes Crescent most special is our extended family of parents, grandparents and friends who entrust us with their sons’ education and believe so strongly in what we do. Your exceptional generosity is one example of your trust in us.

Through your contribution, Crescent’s 2017/18 fundraising effort was the most successful of the last five years. Our parent annual giving program generated the second highest donated amount ever. And by year’s end, our endowment was at an all-time high, approaching $15 million. Your support is truly humbling.

We are more than halfway through our Strategic Plan 2015-2020 and much has been accomplished to support student learning, staff development, community engagement, campus enhancement, and technology innovation. Two significant initiatives have been the creation of a Strategic Academic Plan and a Master Campus Plan.

Our Strategic Academic Plan, what we are affectionately calling “The Crescent Way,” focuses on what makes a Crescent School education truly unique. The groundwork is complete and we are now starting a phased implementation. This year, a new school schedule was introduced to support student health and wellbeing and our community of practice.

Soon we will introduce further ways to showcase student learning with modern assessment practices and through our enriched curriculum of study, while continuing to explore opportunities that increase our diversity, strengthen our standing, and solidify our difference.

Our campus planning continues and envisions Crescent’s facilities over the next 25 years. While there is still important work ahead, our intention by year’s end is to share concrete plans for the initial stages of our Master Campus Plan.

These are exciting times for Crescent School. Thank you for your unwavering support today and for the future.

The External Relations Office is comprised of three administrative departments – Advancement, Marketing & Communications, and Enrolment and Financial Aid. I work closely with the three Directors – Jill Cannon in Advancement, Lynda Torneck in MarComm and David Shaw in Enrolment Specifically, the mission of the Advancement Office is as follows – Through volunteerism, philanthropy, stewardship, and strong alumni and parent relationships, we strive to develop understanding and engagement among our various constituents in order to strengthen and grow our programs, and ensure the financial support and enthusiasm required to fulfill the School’s mission and Strategic Plan.

This Donor Report accounts for gifts made from July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018. As always, we sincerely thank each and every donor who made a financial contribution to the School during this period. You make us a better institution, and we are very grateful.

Highlights from the 2017/18 fiscal year include: • $4.1 million pledged in new commitments to the School and The Foundation, including over $3.0 million in major gift commitments and $1.17 million in support of Parent Annual Giving, including many double up and triple up commitments • $2.3 million in new commitments to endowed needs-based financial aid • Our most successful Grad Gift campaign in terms of participation with 77% of the Class of 2018 grads and 54% of their parents making a gift or pledge • Over 72% of our Faculty and Staff supported the School with a charitable gift including 100% participation from the Leadership Team I would like to thank Stuart Raftus P’17, ’18, ’23, ’26, Chair of the Development Committee and Governor, along with all members of the Development Committee, for their great work this year. I would also like to thank my great team in External Relations for their work and dedication to the School.

The 2017/18 year was another success for our Crescent Alumni Executive, of which I have the privilege of chairing. The Alumni Executive is an outstanding group of committed alumni who volunteer their time to chair and assist in the running and implementation of our varied alumni events and programs. Without their service, we could not offer the programs that we do.

Highlights of 2017/18: • Launching our Crescent Alumni Experience fund raising expendable funds for our student financial aid students to ensure they reap the benefits of a full Crescent School experience inside and outside the classroom • Celebrating and honouring our Alumni Recognition Program winners – Rob Watt ‘85, P’14, Mike McDerment ‘94 and Oleg Baranov ‘94 • Hosting over 25 alumni events across the GTA, Canada and the world, including a rare meet up in Ireland with Dr. Boyes!

• Launching a completely revamped design of Past & Present magazine, making it more alumni specific with more alumni voices heard! Stay tuned for issue number three in January 2019.

Working with the Class of 2018 in raising over $1,200 (and exceeding their goal of $1,000) in support of The Stuart Cumner Class of 2018 Pond, to honour both their graduation and retired faculty member Stuart Cumner Partnering with some incredible employers for our young alumni and giving them a chance at a meaningful summer employment internship opportunity. A particular highlight was sending three young alumni to Melbourne, Australia to work at an accounting firm started by an alumnus from the Class of 1992 Seeing a number of our reunion classes raise funds for student financial aid in honour of their reunion and collectively raising $70,000 in new commitments Launching our new online alumni engagement platform offering our alumni community complete access to one another to facilitate meaningful mentoring connections for both personal and professional use

I want to take this opportunity to offer my thanks, on behalf of the Alumni Executive Committee, to the Advancement Office, for their great work and support throughout 2017/18. In particular, I’d like to thank Kathryn Foster and Katie Watt, who work tirelessly on our behalf. As at June 30, 2018, The Crescent School Foundation achieved a year-end value of $14.36 million, its highest year-end closing ever. The increase of $1.424 million from the previous fiscal year is due to new donations and market gains. New donations were directed towards Student Financial Aid, Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund, Robotics and Technology, Crescent Student Services, Prize Day Awards, as well as Local and International Outreach.

I’d like to offer a special thank you to the graduates and parents of the Class of 2018 who established The Class of 2018 Scholarship. Over $42,000 was committed to a goal of $40,000 and 54% of Class of 2018 parents participated, the highest participation rate ever for a Grad Gift. Well done!

In FY 2017/18, The Foundation disbursed over $370,000 in support of various School programs with approximately 66% directed by our generous donors to support of needs-based Student Financial Aid. This annual disbursement continues in perpetuity ensuring critical funding to key programmatic areas that directly benefit our boys.

The Foundation’s Directors review quarterly and annual financials, and establish and review investment and disbursement policies, as well as the firms we employ to manage Foundation funds, in an effort to preserve and grow the Foundation’s assets in the long term. Your donations are incredibly important to ensure the sustainability of the School’s programs and we take our stewardship responsibility in this regard very seriously. We hope we will continue to receive your trust and confidence in the years ahead.

As always, I encourage you to consider supporting The Foundation and, in particular, Student Financial Aid. All donations receive a charitable gift receipt from The Crescent School Foundation, for tax purposes.

I’d like to thank the Advancement and Finance Offices at Crescent School for their hard work on behalf of The Foundation. This is my last year as Chair of the Foundation. I am passing the reigns to our Vice Chair, Rita Caporiccio P’17, ’20, and wish her well in her new role. I have immensely enjoyed my term as Chair and know that I am leaving The Foundation Board in excellent hands.

While tuition covers the cost of fundamental school operations, it is the generosity of giving through charitable gifts that provide the much-needed support for new facilities, enhancements to our signature academic programs and additional funds for Student Financial Aid. I am truly proud of the rich heritage of generosity that has existed at Crescent School in support of our children’s educational experience.

All of the facilities on campus that our boys benefit from each and every day are the direct result of the generosity of current and past parents, alumni and grandparents. They have supported the School to ensure we can evolve with the changing needs of a future Crescent education. I feel deeply that it is the responsibility of every generation of Crescent families to do the same, and support the School for current AND future boys of promise.

Our Parent Annual Giving program, which raised $1.17 million in 2017/18, with 72% participation, is the most successful program of its kind among our peer schools in the GTA. Last year, funds from Parent Annual Giving supported Board-approved initiatives, including special projects, Student Financial Aid, the Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund and the development of a Master Facilities Plan, which are not covered by tuition.

Our community continues to be generous, resulting in over $4.1 million in new pledges and $3.2 million in paid pledge donations. At this time, the majority of our major gift fundraising is directed towards needsbased Student Financial Aid, which relates directly to the School’s current 2015-2020 Strategic Plan. Of note are recent major gift commitments in support of Robotics and Diversity & Tolerance.

I am so very proud to be part of the Crescent School family, which year after year, continues to inspire me with its generosity, encouragement, commitment and love for this School. I am also privileged to serve on the Board of Governors and as Chair of the Development Committee, both of which are comprised of committed and hard-working volunteers, and I thank each of them for their efforts over the last year.
