The ongoing support of Crescent School is tremendous. The consistent encouragement and kindness of current and past parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends of Crescent, allows me and all the faculty and staff to deliver our best work in service to our boys. On behalf of all of my colleagues, thank you.

Boys’ education remains essential for today’s increasingly diverse and global community. By extension, our mission to build Men of Character from Boys of Promise is both relevant and required for Crescent School’s second century. Increasingly, our boys require advanced knowledge, skills, and character strengths to know themselves, lead others, and leave a legacy in the world. The commitment to our mission and vision for a Crescent education has never been more clear for me and our Board of Governors.

With your help, our boys are able to learn from faculty and staff of the highest calibre, through innovative teaching programs and in customized learning spaces. As part of our Strategic Plan 2015-2020, we are developing initiatives that represent a truly independent Crescent education for boys. Our boys are, and will always be, our number one focus. Presently, our Board has identified needs-based Student Financial Aid as a significant funding priority. This will ensure talented boys from diverse backgrounds and experiences are able to benefit from and contribute to the Crescent experience.

One of the great rewards of serving as Headmaster is the opportunity to meet with and learn from people across the entire Crescent community. I cherish these relationships and am proud of all that we are accomplishing together.

Our job in the Advancement Office at Crescent School is twofold: to make friends and raise funds, always in that order. We support Crescent’s mission, Men of Character from Boys of Promise, through a multitude of alumni programs and fundraising initiatives for our graduates, current and past parents, grandparents, students, faculty and staff, and friends.

This report accounts for gifts made from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. As always, we sincerely thank each and every donor who made a financial contribution to the School during this period. Your philanthropic support allows us to be a better institution, participation makes a huge difference and we are very grateful for your support.

Highlights from the 2015/16 fiscal year include: • $2.6 million pledged in new commitments to the School • O ver $1 million pledged in support of Parent Annual Giving, including many double up and triple up commitments • S ignificant funds raised through our Alumni Annual and Reunion Giving programs toward Class Bursary Funds in support of needs based Student Financial Aid • W e formally concluded the Great Boys campaign with more than $34 million pledged toward our goal of $30 million • W e have established many new relationships with community organizations across the GTA to promote Crescent School and engage others in the process of identifying remarkable boys who would add significantly to the School through a variety of talents. Some of these boys may require Student Financial Aid which is currently the School’s top funding priority.

I would like to thank the Chair of the Development Committee and Governor, Paul Tompkins P’10, ’12, ’13, for his continued hard work on behalf of Crescent School. Paul’s three boys graduated years ago, yet he has continued to devote much time, effort and energy to Crescent School and for that we are truly grateful.

I am proud to report that 2015/16 was another successful year for the Crescent Alumni Executive and for the many and varied programs we offer to the alumni community we have the privilege of serving. The Alumni Executive are a tremendous group of dedicated men who work tirelessly on behalf of Crescent’s graduates, young and old.

Highlights of 2015/16: • Formally establishing the Alumni Reunion Giving Program and working with our reunion class representatives to raise needs-based Student Financial Aid through the By Alumni, For Alumni program • In particular, the Class of ’96 who celebrated their 20th reunion in May and raised over $24,000 in honour of their reunion, surpassing their goal of $20,000!

• Establishing the University Mentoring Program and building strong relationships between current Crescent School grads and university aged alumni in an effort to assist graduates in a smooth transition between Crescent School and first year university • Continuing to build success with the Alumni Internship Program and place more young alumni in meaningful summer jobs • Witnessing record alumni attendance at our Downtown Networking Event in November with over 100 alumni and at our Alumni Reunion in May, where we welcomed 165 alumni and staff to campus I want to take this opportunity to offer my thanks, on behalf of the Alumni Executive Committee, to the Advancement Office, and in particular, Kathryn Foster, for their great work and support throughout 2015/16.

This was my last year as Chair of the Alumni Executive. I am proud to say that I have passed the reigns to Jamie Coulter ’87, P’21 who will very capably guide our alumni activities to great success.

As at June 30, 2016, The Crescent School Foundation achieved a year-end value of $11.6 million, its highest year-end closing ever. The increase of $1.4 million from the previous fiscal year is due in part to over $1.2 million in new donations and market gains. New donations were directed towards Student Financial Aid, Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund, Robotics and Technology, Crescent Student Services, Prize Day Awards, as well as Local and International Outreach.

I’d like to offer a special thank you to the graduates and parents of the Class of 2016 who established The Colin Lowndes Class of 2016 Bursary Fund in support of needs-based Student Financial Aid. This endowed bursary was established with over $37,000 committed before the end of the 2015/16 fiscal year.

In FY 2015/16, The Foundation disbursed $254,000 in support of various School programs with approximately 70% directed by our generous donors in support of needs-based Student Financial Aid. This annual disbursement continues in perpetuity ensuring critical funding to key programmatic areas that directly benefit our boys.

The Foundation’s Directors review quarterly and annual financials, and establish and review investment and disbursement policies, as well as the firms we employ to manage Foundation funds, in an effort to preserve and grow the Foundation’s assets in the long term. Your donations are incredibly important to ensure the sustainability of the School’s programs and we take our stewardship responsibility in this regard very seriously. We hope we will continue to receive your trust and confidence in the years ahead.

As always, I encourage you to consider supporting the Foundation and, in particular, Student Financial Aid. All donations receive a charitable gift receipt from The Crescent School Foundation, for tax purposes.

While tuition covers the cost of school operations, charitable gifts are what provide the much-needed support for new facilities, enhancements to our signature academic programs and additional funds for Student Financial Aid. I am truly proud of the rich heritage of generosity that exists at Crescent School. It is this generosity that resulted in the Great Boys campaign raising over $34,000,000, surpassing our goal. Collectively, we were proud to conclude the campaign and put forth both the Great Boys Campaign Summary Report and unveil the Great Boys campaign Donor Wall to more publicly recognize and thank our amazing donors.

Our Parent Annual Giving program, which raised over $1 million per year with 71% participation, is the most successful program is its kind among our peer schools in the GTA. Last year, funds from Parent Annual Giving supported Board approved initiatives including special projects, student financial aid, the Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund and the development of a Master Facilities Plan, which are not covered by tuition.

Our community continues to be generous resulting in over $2.6 million in new pledges and $3.2 million in paid pledge donations. At this time, the majority of our major gift fundraising is directed towards needsbased Student Financial Aid which relates directly to the School’s current 2015-2020 Strategic Plan.

I am so proud to be part of the Crescent School family, which year after year, continues to inspire me with its generosity, encouragement, commitment and love for this School. This was my last year as Chair of the Development Committee. Stuart Raftus P’17, ’18, ’23 is taking over and I have every confidence that he will do a tremendous job in his new role.
