APRIL 30 IS JAZZ DAY !

JAZZ IS CELEBRATED IN ABIDJAN TOO

Every year, International Jazz Day is celebrated on April 30. A date that honors jazz and highlights its role in promoting peace, unity, dialogue and cooperation between peoples. Established by UNESCO in 2011, it aims to raise public awareness of the virtues of jazz as an educational tool and a force for rapprochement. In Abidjan, as around the world, April is the month of jazz. Here are 2 not-to-be-missed events in Babi, if you want to celebrate !

His influence on Brazilian and world music is immense, and his work continues to be played and revisited by musicians the world over.

A tribute to jazz and bossa nova, brought to you by the Abijazz Association, in partnership with the Institut français. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Jobim made history with his sophisticated harmonies and smooth, fluid melodic approach. He collaborated with legendary artists such as Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald and João Gilberto, shaping the encounter between bossa nova and international jazz.

SOUL DRIVER BACK TO THE VINYL TURNTABLES !

For more than eight years, Soul Driver, aka Sébastien Gavini, has been a regular fixture in Abidjan’s cultural venues and bars, armed with saddlebags full of vinyl ! He hosts evenings with his selections mixing reggae, hip-hop, funk and afrobeat... The next one will take place on April 12, 2025 at La Fabrique Culturelle. Don’t miss it !

But Soul Driver didn’t start his DJ career in Côte d’Ivoire. His first appearances behind the turntable date back to 1998 ! Back then, he was one of the selectors of the now famous “Chalice” reggae sound-system. It was alongside his friends from Lille that he learned how to make a string of records and keep the dance floor on its toes.

Leaving the north of France for Brussels, then Italy and various African countries, Soul Driver broadened both his musical tastes and his vinyl collection: funk (which was already very present), afrobeat (thanks, in particular, to his singer-wife Ruth Tafébé) and above all hip-hop occupied an increasingly important place in his sets (on two turntables this time)... even slipping in a little house and electro !

The dance floor at La Fabrique Culturelle is set to heat up ! Get ready to move to the beat of soul with talented DJ Sébastien Gavini. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Ça va chauffer sur le dance floor de La Fabrique Culturelle ! Préparez-vous à bouger au rythme de la soul avec le talentueux DJ Sébastien Gavini.

And so, after mixing for many years in some of Brussels’ best-known nightspots, Soul Driver regularly finds himself behind the decks at the Fabrique Culturelle, which is undoubtedly the ideal place to enjoy his selection: an open-air dancefloor, a very friendly bar... Atmosphere guaranteed ! Photos : Flyers designed by Nicolas Withof

The exhibition explores vernacular architecture and mystical realism in the Black Atlantic, shaped by centuries of transatlantic trade. It reveals the transmission of indigenous and ancestral knowledge through habitat, ritual and spirituality. Initiated by artist Wendie Zahibo, this transmedia and transnational project is enriched by the collaboration of Keren Lasme, Anaïs Cheleux, Alejandra Loreto, Jeebrahil and RD/WL. « AH… L’ÉCOLE ! »

BOODER’S NEW SHOW

Booder takes a mischievous look at the evolution of school, making us laugh as much as he makes us think.

To our great delight, Booder is back in Abidjan! On April 30, 2025, on the stage of the Palais de la Culture, he will present his brand-new one-man-show “Ah... l’école !”. An intergenerational, funny and touching show to share with the whole family. BAAB will be there. And what about you ?

With his piquant humor and legendary tenderness, Booder takes us on a hilarious journey between his childhood and that of his son. He revisits the world of school in his own light-hearted way, tackling subjects that speak to everyone : teachers, the playground, homework, friends... Between anecdotes and memories, he recalls his school years with humor : his outstanding teachers, his first steps on stage thanks to a school workshop... and also takes the opportunity to deliver a strong message against school bullying.

Far from moralizing, Booder prefers to compare the school of yesterday and today, and to highlight the transformations in the education system, always with finesse and self-mockery ! “I’m not here to judge, just to make an observation... with a smile,” he says.

The result ? A real moment of complicity and, above all, laughter for everyone ! No vulgarity or provocation, just accessible humor that appeals to all generations. With his cartoonish good looks, Booder succeeds in creating a friendly atmosphere where everyone recognizes themselves... and, above all, has a great time ! April 20, 2025, Palace of Culture

THEATER AT IFCI

“PHOTO DE GROUPE AU BORD DU FLEUVE’’

Adapted from Emmanuel Dongala’s novel of the same name, “Photo de groupe au bord du fleuve” depicts the poignant struggle of a group of female stone-crushing workers for a decent wage. Carried by the inner voice of Méréana, who by circumstance becomes both heroine and witness to this collective revolt, the play comes to life under the direction of Valérie Goma. It explores the complexity of female solidarity and resilience in the face of injustice. It returns to the Institut Français on Friday April 11, 2025, with a cast featuring artists from Guyana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Published in 2010, Emmanuel Dongala’s novel made a lasting impression with its secondperson narrative, immersing the reader in the consciousness of its heroine, Méréana. The theatrical adaptation remains faithful to this approach, highlighting this inner voice and reinforcing its power through immersive staging and a choral approach.

Created in French Guiana, it pays tribute to these invisible women who, by breaking stones, also shape their own destiny. The play doesn’t simply follow a linear narrative : it unfolds around a wake, that of Batatou, one of the workers who fell under the blows of an oppressive system. A dramaturgical choice that highlights the links between memory, mourning and revolt.

The play doesn’t simply follow a linear narrative: it unfolds around a wake, that of Batatou, one of the workers who fell under the blows of an oppressive system. A dramaturgical choice that highlights the links between memory, mourning and revolt.

In keeping with the Théâtre de la Ruche company’s approach, the staging is inclusive. Through an interplay of open spaces and moving set designs, the audience is invited to share in the heroines’ struggle, pain and hope. Music, already present in the original work, is naturally integrated into the stage, alongside song and dance, bringing a festive and popular dimension to the piece.

ART SOLIDAIRE

VILLA 76 X AKWABA MOUSSO

On Thursday April 10, 2025, Villa 76 will host the first “Traits de Vie” evening, combining art and solidarity. During this exceptional evening, artist Capucine Minot will present her Limited Editions and original works. One of them will be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to the Akwaba Mousso Association.

In her work of infinite precision and delicacy, Capucine Minot pays tribute to the wonders of Africa, its cultural and organic heritage. Each work, created in graphite pencil and sometimes punctuated with black ink, is transporting in its realism and the emotion the artist invests in it during dozens, even hundreds, of hours of work. For the “Traits de Vie” evening, the spotlight will be on her work “Awa”, the cowrie shell. A symbol of feminine power, it links the artist’s work with her commitment to Akwaba Mousso.

Akwaba Mousso is an integrated service center that provides free care for women and children who are victims of violence, in a secure, confidential and caring environment. Funds raised during the “Traits de Vie” evening will help finance the fitting-out of the new shelter for the most vulnerable women and children.

As a reminder, Capucine Minot’s Limited Editions are available at La Villa 76, a concept store that celebrates the know-how of the African continent and those who draw inspiration from it on their creative journeys. The new space hosts workshops and exhibitions, as well as a number of exciting initiatives, such as the “Traits de Vie” evening on April 10.

LE RETOUR DU GENDARME DE ABOBO

MOVIE OF THE MONTH

Gendarme Gokou has been decorated by the President for foiling a terrorist plot in Abobo. But the day he is appointed to lead a team of Ivorian gendarmes against other African gendarmerie teams, his skills are put to the test.

BAAB talks...

After winning over audiences in 2019, Le gendarme de Abobo is back with a vengeance for an even crazier new adventure ! This time, Gokou (Michel Gohou), promoted to the head of a special unit, must represent Côte d’Ivoire in a competition between African police forces. But fate has a surprise in store for him: he will have to team up with Lieutenant Leblanc (Ray Reboul), a French gendarme... who is none other than the hidden son of the President of the French Republic! Needless to say, the mission promises to be explosive.

With their absurd situations, improbable stunts and cult retorts, this explosive duo promises a cocktail of humor and action with an Ivorian twist. The cast includes Michel Gohou, Ray Reboul, Le Magnific, Agalawal, Fingon Tralala and many other figures of African laughter.

With a fast-paced plot, scenes filmed between Abidjan and Grand-Bassam, and a wicked sense of humor, Le Retour du Gendarme de Abobo promises to be THE film not to be missed this month. Are you ready for a high-risk mission... for your zygomatic ? See it in Majestic cinemas from April 4, 2025 !

PAQUINOU’S TRIP TO BAOULE COUNTRY

As you know, among the Baoule people, Easter isn’t just a religious holiday, it’s the event of the year: a great family reunion where we return to the land of our ancestors to celebrate with music, dance and traditional dishes. If you’re looking for a place to stay and experience Paquinou to the full, we’ve got just what you’re looking for! Here are 3 addresses to make the most of this long weekend, whether you’re looking for authenticity, festivity or simply a relaxing setting !

LE REFUGE DU BANDAMA – KANGA NIANZÉ

Perched high above the Bandama River, the Refuge du Bandama is an architect-designed house designed for total immersion in nature, with XXL bay windows offering exceptional panoramic views at every moment of the day. An invitation to slow down, breathe and reconnect !

In terms of leisure activities, the Refuge offers a program combining relaxation and adventure: swimming in the natural pool in a

calm branch of the river, forest walks, pirogue trips to meet the hippos, observation from the platform perched in a tree, accessible via a suspension bridge, a sauna in the middle of nature... in short, the ideal place to take a breather and live in harmony with the elements.

We love : the unique setting and peaceful atmosphere, the cosy, well-appointed apartments and the choice of activities.

DIATOULA, LES TERRES DOUCES – TIÈKORODOUGOU

A nature getaway on the outskirts of Yamoussoukro.

Looking for a weekend in the countryside, far from noise and asphalt ? Head for DiatoulaLes Terres Douces, an agro-ecological farm just 10 minutes from Yamoussoukro. Here, time slows down, nature reclaims its rights and we rediscover the pleasure of simple things !

This 35-hectare haven of peace, 20 hectares of which are farmed using agroforestry and permaculture methods, is the home of Marie and Mamadou Coulibaly. Diatoula, in Bambara, means “dry land that turns green”. And that’s exactly what has happened here. In just a few years, this once dry land has become a model of sustainable management, where cocoa, yams, bananas, moringa, rice and cashew trees are grown in harmony with nature.

For total immersion, settle into one of the three guest rooms, built from geo-concrete (a material that keeps you cool even without air conditioning!), relax by the magnificent swimming pool, stroll through the plantations or enjoy a good meal under the large hut... “Slow life” is the watchword here. Slow life” is the watchword. A true delight !

We love : the 100% natural setting and ecoresponsible approach, the warm welcome and the home-cooked meals using the farm’s own resources.
