FOOD TREND BURRATA MANIA

Y

ou can’t miss it! For the past few years, burrata has established itself as the undisputed queen of summer tables. Creamy, delicious, and utterly photogenic, this Italian specialty has conquered restaurant menus worldwide, and naturally, Abidjan could not resist its charm! Born in Apulia, Southern Italy, burrata reportedly came to life in the early 20th century near Andria. Its invention is attributed to cheesemaker Lorenzo Bianchino, who imagined this mozzarella pouch filled with stracciatella and cream to make use of surplus milk and avoid waste. Long a regional treasure, burrata has since expanded far beyond Italian borders. Its rise was driven by the growing popularity of Mediterranean cuisine, as well as Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest, where its runny center continues to cause a sensation. As a result, the tomato-burrata duo—enhanced with a drizzle of olive oil, a few basil leaves, and sometimes a touch of balsamic—has become an essential classic. However, this dairy star is no longer content with just traditional salads. Chefs are reinventing it endlessly: on crispy toast, paired with fruit, served with roasted vegetables, placed atop pasta, gnocchi, or risotto, breaded and fried, baked al forno, wrapped in pizza dough, or slipped into ultra-gourmet burgers. In short, a thousand and one ways to enjoy it! To find out where to give in to “Burrata Mania”, BAAB has prepared a selection of addresses to taste it. Buon appetito! 18

A

major exhibition on Ivorian cinema from the 1960s to today, but through a different lens. Until October 19, 2026 at La Fabrique Culturelle (2 Plateaux).

He invites us to reflect on the origins of culture, its transmission, and its transformations over time. Until October 20, 2026 at the Farah Fakhri Gallery (Plateau).

VLISCO SETS UP SHOP AT CAP SUD

THE TRENDY MUST-VISIT SPOT OF THE MONTH

W

e all know Vlisco—its patterns, vibrant colors, and instantly recognizable fabrics. Behind these creations lie nearly two centuries of expertise and a story that continues to unfold. This October, Vlisco invites us to discover several facets of its world. The brand takes over Cap Sud with a pop-up store and an exhibition looking back at 180 years of history. First stop: the ground floor of the shopping mall, where a pop-up store features a selection of iconic prints alongside its latest releases. Perfect for planning year-end outfits, finding your next favorite print, or simply discovering an unexpected design. To help you make the right choice, the Vlisco team is on hand to guide and advise visitors through the collections. And that’s just the beginning—the pop-up store has more surprises in store throughout the month!

The visit doesn’t end with shopping. On the first floor, Vlisco opens another door to its heritage with an exhibition dedicated to 180 years of history and design. A wonderful way to compare timeless patterns with those writing the house’s latest chapter today.

Throughout October, Cap Sud becomes Vlisco’s flagship stop in Abidjan. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 46

BEHIND THE PATTERNS 180 YEARS OF CREATIVITY In 2026, Vlisco celebrates 180 years of history, textile creation, and craftsmanship. Remarkable longevity for a fashion house whose patterns span generations and continue to be worn and reinterpreted today. FABRICS THAT TELL STORIES Over the decades, Vlisco has created more than 350,000 designs and color variations. Across West and Central Africa, these patterns were not merely worn—they were named, interpreted, and imbued with meaning. Over time, specific designs became linked to proverbs, everyday situations, or romantic, family, and social dynamics, giving rise to evocative names like “Mari capable” (“Capable Husband”), “Je cours plus vite que ma rivale” (“I run faster than my rival”), “Si tu sors, je sors” (“If you go out, I go out”), or “Les Yeux de ma belle-mère” (“My Mother-in-Law’s Eyes”). These stories, passed down alongside the fabrics, often give them a whole new dimension beyond what was originally envisioned. New collections, creative collaborations, and fresh interpretations continue to evolve Vlisco’s artistic universe today.

IDENTITÉ EN FLORAISON THE MUST-SEE EXHIBITION

W

hat if identity were never static, but in perpetual bloom? That is the premise of “Identité en floraison”, an exhibition curated by Léandro Brito de Araujo around the works of young Ivorian artist Livasse Gopré. Until October 22, 2026, the Laurenceairline gallery transforms into a sensitive, burgeoning space where painting and introspection meet to question what shapes us. Born in Oumé, in southwestern Côte d’Ivoire, and trained at INSAAC in Abidjan, Livasse Gopré places human beings at the center of his artistic approach. His canvases strike first through their vibrant backgrounds: colors, textures, and organic shapes intertwine like inner vegetation in motion. But here, the backdrop is not merely decorative—it is the very fabric of identity. Within this pictorial jungle, silhouettes, faces, and bodies appear to emerge from the color rather than detach from it. Their skin and clothing seem porous, permeated by this living matter. It is as though memories, emotions, wounds, and encounters suddenly become visible. For the artist, every relationship leaves a mark. Certain encounters bring life, while others wound; some open paths, while others obscure them. Whether through friendship, love, conflict, or pivotal moments, they all help shape our trajectories and the way we inhabit the world. “Identité en floraison” thus offers a dialogue between past, present, and future. It reminds us that we are both the product of our history and the actors of what we choose to do with it. Identity is therefore not a fixed definition: it evolves, transforms, and reinvents itself. ôte d’Ivoire is getting ready to vibrate to the rhythm of dance with the long-awaited return of the Great Dance Workshops (Les Grands Ateliers de la Danse - GADA). From October 23 to 25, 2026, Abidjan and Mondoukou will host this major event, which has established itself as an essential benchmark on the African and international artistic scenes. For this 6th edition, GADA promises a true celebration of creativity and diversity, bringing together artists from varied backgrounds around a shared passion: dance.

The company is also behind La Cocoteraie des Arts, a unique seaside cultural space in Mondoukou that serves as the heart of the festival. A venue for creation, training, and residencies, La Cocoteraie perfectly embodies GADA’s philosophy: a space where art and community connect. A festival with international reach More than ever, GADA 2026 aims to be a platform for encounters and exchanges, showcasing Ivorian cultural heritage while positioning Côte d’Ivoire as a cultural hub in West Africa. By welcoming international artists, the festival reinforces its role as a bridge between African traditions and contemporary creation. This edition features the exceptional presence of choreographer Josef Nadj’s Atelier 3 + 1 company, presenting Full Moon on October 23 at 7:30 PM at the Institut Français, and Omma on October 25 at 3:30 PM at La Cocoteraie des Arts. Other international figures such as Marius Sawadogo (Burkina Faso) and Aipeur Foundou (Congo-Brazzaville) will also enrich the lineup. Strong local roots GADA also celebrates the richness of the Ivorian scene, which will be widely represented on October 24 and 25 at La Cocoteraie des Arts. Featured works include Le Palmier by Eloi Hortense and Cie Para’elle (combining dance, music, and theater), Une dernière goutte by Emerson from Cie Team Boys Dance (hip-hop), Fononbingue by Kassoutri and Mehansio companies, as well as traditional Zaouli mask dances performed by the Zaouli Unter company of Banco.

10 YEARS OF WORDS, VOICES, AND ENCOUNTERS

F

rom October 29 to November 1, 2026, the Abidjan International Slam Festival returns for a special 10th edition. For ten years, Babi Slam has brightened outlooks, awakened minds, touched hearts, and challenged conventions. Ten years of passion and sharing with the public. For a decade, Babi Slam has grown with its audience and made the capital vibrate to the rhythm of urban poetry. For this 10th anniversary edition, the festival gathers slam poets from Côte d’Ivoire, Africa, and Europe over four days. More than a stage marathon, the event is a genuine space for exchange: through workshops and masterclasses, young artists gather to refine their writing, hone their stage presence, and learn to tell their stories. It is this diversity of backgrounds and journeys that makes this unique event so rich. The highlight of the festivities, La Grande Nuit du Slam (The Great Slam Night), will take place on Saturday, October 31 at 7:00 PM at the Institut Français de Côte d’Ivoire. A true celebration of words, this closing night will offer nearly two hours of immersive performance blending text, music, song, and light. Featured artists include talented voices from Burkina Faso (Yellow), Togo (Mygiab), Germany (Melanelle Hémêfa), and Côte d’Ivoire.

For ten years, Babi Slam has made words resonate in Abidjan. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> LA GRANDE NUIT DU SLAM

EBINTO, THE MOVIE

THE MOVIE EVENT OF THE MONTH

T

here are books you read, and others you keep somewhere inside you. Les Frasques d’Ébinto, the novel by Amadou Koné published in 1980, belongs to this second category. Generations of Ivorian and West African readers grew up with this story of youth, love, ambition, and responsibility. On October 15, 2026, Ébinto leaves the pages of schoolbooks to take over Abidjan’s movie theaters, before continuing its journey to Bouaké and then to the Grand Rex in Paris on October 29. Adapted by writer Gauz, directed by Luc Gnepa, and produced by Charly Kodjo for Instant2Vie Studio in co-production with NCI, Ebinto takes on a bold challenge: transposing the emotion of a cult story into a modern visual experience. At the heart of the narrative, Ébinto, a brilliant student at the Grand-Bassam middle school played by the talented Ephraïm Oka, embodies all the hopes of an ambitious youth. But between first loves, naive passions, and teenage pregnancies, his dreams collide abruptly with the weight of responsibility and irreversible choices. Supported by Maud Guérard and Armande Lo, the actor brings to life the universal struggles of a teenager pushed too quickly into the adult world. Filmed between the enchanting landscapes of the Aby Lagoon and the historic charm of Grand-Bassam, the movie pays special attention to its atmosphere. Meticulous 1970s set reconstructions, period costumes, and refined photography make the Ivorian territory a character in its own right. More than a simple exercise in nostalgia, this comedy-drama questions family, education, sexuality, and the possibility of forgiveness. 56

BAAB - OCTOBER 2026 #139

What remains is the meeting between a film and the memories of those who knew the book. Will readers find the Ébinto of their youth? Will younger audiences discover a character who still speaks to them? That is the ultimate value of this adaptation: bringing a story born in Ivorian literature to a new generation and, in the process, reminding us that some classics never stop growing. From October 15, 2026 in Pathé and Majestic theaters. Reservations: www.ebinto.net

STREET FIGHTER MOVIE OF THE MONTH

I

n 1993, Ryu and Ken Masters, two once-inseparable Street Fighters, are plunged back into the arena when the mysterious Chun-Li recruits them for the upcoming World Warrior Tournament: a brutal showdown where fists, destiny, and fury collide. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy forcing them to fight each other while confronting the demons of their past… And if they fail, it’s game over.

BAAB’s Take... Thirty years after the 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Street Fighter returns to cinemas with a new adaptation of the famous video game franchise. Coproduced by Capcom, Legendary, and Paramount Pictures, the film directed by Kitao Sakurai releases on October 16, 2026 in your Majestic theaters with a clear promise: capturing the spectacular energy of the arcade while offering an adventure crafted for the big screen. The project’s main asset is its surprising cast. Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo play Ryu and Ken, Callina Liang embodies Chun-Li, Jason Momoa steps into the role of Blanka, 50 Cent becomes Balrog, Cody Rhodes portrays Guile, and Roman Reigns plays Akuma. A blend of actors, professional wrestlers, and music personalities that gives the film a resolutely pop energy, embracing the over-the-top nature of the original universe. Visually, the film checks all the boxes: martial arts choreography executed to perfection, striking special effects, clear nods to Hadokens and spinning kicks, and a sleek visual direction. While the screenplay favors direct efficiency, the direction compensates with a fast-paced rhythm that leaves no breathing room. This modern retelling succeeds in converting arcade fury into a generous, deeply fun pop-culture blockbuster. An unmissable big-screen appointment to get your fill of adrenaline. Fight! 62

GETAWAY TO BOUAKÉ

THE BEATING HEART OF BAOULÉ COUNTRY

H

alfway between Abidjan and the northern part of the country, Bouaké is often passed through before being visited. Yet, the capital of Gbêkê deserves a closer look. As Côte d’Ivoire’s second-largest city by population, it has long been a major commercial, cultural, and railway hub. A bustling, cosmopolitan city where various communities from across the country and neighboring states cross paths.

A HISTORY FORGED IN THE HEART OF THE SAVANNA

Above all, Bouaké is a gateway to Baoulé country. A destination where history, artisanal craftsmanship, and savanna landscapes are revealed through authentic encounters.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

74

BAAB - OCTOBER 2026 #139

Before becoming the major regional metropolis known today, Bouaké was a peaceful settlement named Gbêkêkro (“Gbêkê’s village”), founded in the late 19th century by Baoulé chief Gossan Kwa Gbêkê. Tied to the epic story of the legendary Queen Abla Pokou, the region established itself as the cradle of a proud and inventive people. The arrival of colonial authorities in the late 1800s, followed by the decisive inauguration of the Abidjan-Niger railway in 1912, propelled the small town into a strategic national hub.

CITY STROLL WHAT NOT TO MISS!

Discovering Bouaké starts with feeling the pulse of its emblematic neighborhoods. The first essential stop is the Grand Marché de Bouaké, a true commercial giant spanning several hectares near the cathedral, completely redesigned following major modernization works. Nearby, the Marché de Gros showcases the city’s vital role in the distribution of food crops across West Africa. To experience Bouaké’s creative soul, head to the Dar-es-Salam neighborhood. Here, women dyers perpetuate centuriesold expertise in indigo fabrics and batik techniques. Among large dye vats, visitors can watch artisans tie, dip, and reveal captivating geometric patterns. Regarding religious and architectural heritage, the city features two major landmarks: Sainte-Thérèse de l’EnfantJésus Cathedral, located in the Nimbo neighborhood, featuring 20th-century raw concrete architecture and The Grand Mosque built between 1881 and 1889 and the city’s oldest mosque. 75

Here, the rhythmic clatter of traditional looms fills the air. Men skillfully assemble dyed cotton threads to create bands of Baoulé cloth featuring ancestral patterns, where each design tells a proverb, a status, or a legend.

The Loka reservoir lake, supplying 70% of Bouaké’s water, offers shaded banks ideal for picnics, hiking, mountain biking, or pirogue rides among fishermen. Nearby stands Mount Fli, sacred to locals, where a rock features a mysterious footprint attributed to a mythical creature, a giant, or the mountain’s protective spirit. Further east toward Brobo, impressive granite outcrops form unexpected cliffs, perfect for watching the sunset over the savanna.

4. Bush Experience at N’Zi River Lodge 45 km northeast of Bouaké Nestled between the N’Zi and Mafa rivers, this 41,000-hectare nature reserve features wooded savannas, gallery forests, and Baoulé hills.
