However, as a diverse curriculum area, information is unavailable for certain subjects so this report uses economic modelling data from EMSI where information is not included in the Local Enterprise Partnership toolkit. The report identifies the source of specific information for clarity.

The advanced engineering and manufacturing sector employs around 73,300 people in Lancashire, accounting for 12% of total employment. The sector generates around £3.7bn in Gross Value Added each year, contributing 15% to Lancashire’s GVA compared to 8% nationally. The workforce is ageing, with 45% aged between 45 and 64 years of age (compared to 40% overall). In the forthcoming years, a large section of the workforce will enter retirement age and need replacing. Industrial digitalisation may impact on workforce requirements and should be considered when considering curriculum.

This is the application of digital tools and technologies to businesses which make things (e.g. the automotive and construction industries) or are otherwise operationally asset intensive (e.g. power grids and wind farms). These technologies enable the physical and digital worlds to be merged, and can bring significant enhancement to performance and productivity. These technologies are called industrial digitalisation technologies (IDTs) and include: 1. AI, machine learning and data analytics 2. Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing 3. Robotics and automation 4. VR and AR and visualisation 5. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and connectivity (5G, LPWAN etc.)

It is proposed that a National Adoption Programme (NAP) with a goal of increasing and accelerating the development and adoption of IDTs is to be adopted following a six-month pilot project in the North West of England owned by Local Enterprise Partnerships.

Aerospace The UK is a global leader in aerospace with the second largest presence worldwide.

The sector is a major contributor to the UK economy with a turnover last year of ÂŁ55bn, supporting over 250,000 high-value jobs with a productivity level at almost double the national average.

It enjoys a projected 90 per cent growth in sales over the next 20 years, and full order books.

A national effort to increase digital capability across the supply chain would radically enhance the competitiveness of UK aerospace companies and wider industry.

Key areas should include developing a digital workforce, the exploitation of a fully integrated information environment, the development and exploitation of digital assets to enable business model transformation, and maximising productivity.

Digital technologies can enable radically new business models and platforms, such as electric powered urban air mobility. These new offerings will depend on a “system of systems� approach to manage safely the complex interactions of air vehicles within urban environments and airspace. In turn, this will demand high speed digital connectivity, fully autonomous vehicle architectures and complex airspace management.

Automotive The UK automotive sector has enjoyed unprecedented success in recent years.

Car manufacturing is now at its highest level since 2005, exports are stronger than ever and the UK can boast an increasingly competitive supply chain, with cars built in Britain now having over 22% more UK content than they did six years ago.

The UK produced 1.7 million cars and commercial vehicles and almost 2.4 million engines in 2015, the highest production level since the recession in 2007. The output level is expected to reach 2.0 million vehicles by 2021. The UK remains the second largest vehicle market and fourth largest vehicle manufacturer in the EU. It is also the second largest premium vehicle manufacturer after Germany.

However, currently the automotive sector is experiencing a period of unprecedented change.

Driven by global megatrends such as CO2 reduction, air quality improvement and exacting safety requirements, vehicles are becoming increasingly electrified, autonomous and connected. This disruptive transformation is happening rapidly and in itself represents a significant opportunity for companies that are flexible and can develop new products and business models quickly e.g. servitisation. In turn, many of the developments provide the foundations for integration into the wider challenge of personal mobility. Digitalisation is the prime enabler.

Blackpool Transport is the first bus company in England to go fully electric and is a local example of how traditional workforce requirements are changing with technological advancements.
