os enorgullece informarle que en días pasados iniciamos la ampliación de nuestro centro de capacitación, localizado en Ciudad del Saber, Ciudad de Panamá, para albergar un nuevo simulador de vuelo, en esta ocasión para los B737MAX.

W

e are proud to inform you that we recently began expanding our training center, located in Ciudad del Saber, Panama City. The updated center will house a new flight simulator, this time for the B737MAX.

Con una inversión inicial de US$13,8 millones, el nuevo simulador iniciará operaciones en enero próximo. Nuestra aerolínea es la única con un centro de capacitación de estas características en Latinoamérica, que además del nuevo simulador de vuelo para el 737 MAX a instalarse, está equipado con otros nueve simuladores: tres para el modelo Boeing B737NG, uno para el Embraer E190, dos B737NG Cockpit Procedure Trainers y tres para entrenamiento de procedimientos virtuales.

The new 13.8 million dollar simulator will begin operating in January. We are the only airline in Latin America to have this kind of training center, which, aside from the new flight simulator for the 737 MAX, is equipped with nine other simulators: three for the Boeing B737NG, one for the Embraer E190, two B737NG Cockpit Procedure Trainers, and three for virtual procedure training.

Este centro, con una inversión global que asciende a US$60 millones, permite entrenar a unos 1.150 pilotos al año, no solo de nuestra aerolínea, sino de otras que operan en la región. La nueva ampliación elevará dicha capacidad de entrenamiento en cerca del 25%. La expansión del centro de capacitación ostentará un diseño integrado con su entorno, con grandes ventanales que permitirán visualizar desde el exterior el funcionamiento de los simuladores.

A global investment of 60 million dollars has made it possible for this center to train approximately 1,150 pilots a year, for our airline as well as others operating in the region. The new expansion will increase our training capacity by around 25%. The expansion will integrate the training center with its surroundings via large windows that allow simulator operation to be viewed from the outside.

t came as a surprise to no one that Chile recently regained its position as the bestplaced Latin American country in the World Innovation Index. One of the factors considered in the South American country’s high ranking on the list is Chile’s growing number of new companies. According to data from the Chilean Entrepreneurship Association, the group has nearly 30,000 members, many of whom focus on digital businesses and new technologies. Most of the innovators can be found in Santiago, which is already known as “Chilecon Valley,” and Valparaíso. The Chilean model has inspired regional neighbors and local consultants to work with the government and the country’s other economic actors to improve and stimulate the economy. www.asech.cl

La gran sequía maya The Great Mayan Drought

L

a civilización maya tuvo su apogeo hacia el año 250 d.C. en la Península de Yucatán, pero sus grandes ciudades de compleja arquitectura, llenas de arte y desarrollo intelectual, quedaron abandonadas hace cerca de mil años y sus poblaciones fueron casi extintas.

Hasta la fecha se ha especulado que una fuerte sequía pudo haber ocasionado el colapso, pero un reciente estudio, publicado en la revista Science, cuantificó por primera vez los cambios de precipitación durante ese periodo de tiempo. El grupo de investigadores, liderado por Nicholas Evans, de la Universidad de Cambridge, utilizó una nueva técnica para analizar los isótopos de agua atrapada en el yeso del lago Chichankanab.

El yeso es un mineral que se forma al bajar el nivel de agua en los lagos durante las sequías y las moléculas de agua que quedan atrapadas allí tienen los isótopos de oxígeno e hidrógeno necesarios para medir la cantidad de agua presente en ese momento. Los investigadores hicieron un modelo de las condiciones hidrogeológicas y encontraron que la precipitación anual durante aquella época se redujo del 41 al 54%, con periodos hasta con el 70% menos de precipitación, lo que habría afectado a la agricultura y, a la postre, ocasionado el fin de la civilización.

ayan civilization reached its peak on the Yucatan Peninsula in 250 BC. Its large, intellectually developed cities filled with complex architecture and art were abandoned nearly a thousand years ago and the cities’ inhabitants disappeared almost entirely. Until recently, a severe drought was thought to have caused the collapse, but a new study published in Science quantified for the first time the changes in precipitation during the period. The group of researchers, led by Nicholas Evans of the University of Cambridge, used a new technique to analyze the isotopes of water trapped in gypsum in Lake Chichankanab.

Gypsum forms when the water level in a lake falls during droughts; the water molecules trapped in this mineral contain the oxygen and hydrogen isotopes needed to measure the amount of water present at the time. Researchers built a model of hydrogeological conditions and found that annual rainfalls at the time fell from 41-54%, with periods of up to 70% less precipitation than normal, which would have affected agriculture and, ultimately, decimated this civilization.

n las vacaciones de verano ideales no han de faltar días de sol y diversión.

Para disfrutarlos correctamente es necesario el uso adecuado de bloqueador solar, evitando así daños en el ADN de la piel.

Según Antony Young, líder de un grupo de investigadores del King’s College de Londres, uno de los errores más comunes es aplicar una capa muy delgada, lo cual podría reducir la protección a solo el 40% de lo esperado.

Los investigadores demostraron que cinco días consecutivos de alta exposición a rayos ultravioleta (UV) con el uso indicado del bloqueador podrían ocasionar menos daños a la piel que un solo día de exposición baja sin bloqueador. Los investigadores aconsejan aplicar una capa de al menos 2 mg por centímetro cuadrado de piel y que se use un factor de protección SPF más alto del necesario, para contrarrestar las consecuencias de usarlo de manera inapropiada.

he ideal summer vacation is sure to include lots of fun, sunny days. To enjoy them properly, it’s important to use sunscreen correctly to avoid damaging the skin’s DNA. Antony Young, leader of a research group at King’s College London, says one of the most common sunscreen mistakes is applying too little, which could mean a reduction of up to 40% of expected protection. Researchers demonstrated that five consecutive days of high exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays using the right sunblock could do less damage to the skin than a single day of low exposure without a sunblock. The same researchers recommend applying a layer of at least 2 mg per square centimeter of skin and using sunblock with a higher SPF than necessary to counteract the consequences of incorrect use.

El Manzano Histórico

A

demás de ser una localidad del departamento de Tunuyán, en la provincia de Mendoza, Argentina, también es un monumento natural e histórico. El lugar se desarrolló en torno a un viejo árbol de manzana bajo cuya sombra se dice que descansó el general José de San Martín a su regreso de la campaña libertadora en Perú.

Hoy existe un museo alusivo y este monumento llamado “Retorno a la Patria”, esculpido por el artista Luis Perlotti entre 1949 y 1950. El lugar es también origen de varios senderos que atraviesan una reserva natural de 314.600 hectáreas entre el volcán Tupungato y la Laguna del Diamante.

l Manzano Histórico (Historic Apple Tree) is both a location in the Tunuyán department in the province of Mendoza, Argentina and a natural and historical monument. The area grew up around an old apple tree that shaded the spot where General José de San Martín is said to have rested on his return from liberating Peru. Today the area boasts a museum and this monument, called “Return to the Fatherland,” sculpted by artist Luis Perlotti between 1949 and 1950. Several trails also start here before crossing a 780,000-acre reserve stretching from Tupungato Volcano to Laguna del Diamante (Diamond Lake).

Una novela criminal Jorge Volpi

l más reciente trabajo del escritor mexicano reproduce el llamativo caso de la francesa Florence Cassez, quien fue aprehendida el 9 de diciembre de 2005, en el marco de la detención de una famosa banda de secuestradores, al tiempo que se liberaba a sus víctimas. Luego se supo que el verdadero operativo había tenido lugar el día anterior, y que este había sido diseñado como un recurso mediático para elevar la imagen pública de las autoridades y, supuestamente, incriminar aún más a los detenidos. ¿Víctima o victimaria?: la dicotomía enfrentaría a los gobiernos y opiniones públicas de México y Francia durante años, hasta que, a principios de 2013, el truculento montaje original terminó por viciar el proceso, llevando a la Corte Suprema de México a ordenar su liberación. Quizá la obra de Volpi ayude a arrojar luz sobre esta triste cadena de eventos.

he Mexican author’s most recent work is based on the fascinating story of Frenchwoman Florence Cassez, who was arrested on December 9, 2005 as part of a case involving a well-known gang of kidnappers and the freeing of their hostages.

It was later learned that the actual operation had taken place the previous day, and the second operation had been designed as a publicity stunt to improve the image of the authorities and allegedly further incriminate the detainees. Victim or victimizer? The governments and public opinion of México and France would wrestle with this dichotomy for years, until early 2013, when the grisly original operation was considered to have contaminated the legal process, leading the Mexican Supreme Court to order Florence Cassez freed. Volpi’s book may help shed light on this sad chain of events.

ecuerdo la primera vez que me subí a un barco. Tenía entonces menos de veinte años e iba rumbo a una isla llamada Casaya, un pedacito de tierra del Archipiélago de las Perlas, en el Pacífico panameño. Era una nave precaria con camarotes oscuros y claustrofóbicos, que se dedicaba no solo al transporte de almas sino también al intercambio de mercancías entre Ciudad de Panamá y la provincia más selvática del país: Darién.

Transitar por el Canal de Panamá es una experiencia única. Más de un siglo después de su inauguración, la vía continúa sorprendiendo con su sistema de cámaras y esclusas.

I

remember the first time I went on a boat. I wasn’t yet 20 and I was headed for an island called Casaya, a spit of land in the Las Perlas Archipelago in the Panamanian Pacific. We sailed on a precarious boat with dark, claustrophobic cabins. The ship transported both people and merchandise between Panama City and the country’s most jungled province: Darién.

Traveling through the Panama Canal is a unique experience.

More than a century after it opened, the canal continues to amaze us with its system of chambers and locks.

Más de dos décadas después, aquel viaje nocturno me produce sonrisas nostálgicas, pero entonces fueron solo mareos y náuseas. Ni siquiera la brisa salpicada de lluvia alivió los malestares, potenciados por la impresión de navegar hacia un agujero negro.

More than two decades later, that night voyage conjures nostalgic smiles, but at the time, there was only seasickness and nausea. Not even the breeze bringing a hint of rain eased my sufferings, which were multiplied by the impression that we were sailing into a black hole.

A lot of water has flowed under bridge since then, and during this finite journey we call life, I have had the chance to travel by kayak, dugout canoe, launch, and yacht. But never on a cruise ship.

Until now.

El viaje que voy a contarles empezó en un poblado llamado Gamboa. Ubicado en medio de un bosque lluvioso, a 32 kilómetros de Ciudad de Panamá, Gamboa empezó a poblarse a principios del siglo XX, cuando se construía el Canal. Hoy es una comunidad semidesierta que aloja la División de Dragados de la vía interoceánica, y es precisamente en el puerto de esta división donde abordo el Discovery.

Our trip began in a town called Gamboa.

Located 20 miles from Panama City in the midst of the rain forest, Gamboa began to draw people in the early 20th century when the Canal was built. This now semi-deserted town is home to the Canal’s Dredging Division. I board the Discovery at the Division’s port.

Acostumbrada, como panameña que soy, a mirar pasar los barcos desde el Centro de Visitantes de Miraflores o sufriendo el tranque infernal de las horas pico sobre alguno de los dos puentes que cruzan el Canal, el trayecto por las entrañas de la vía resultó un cambio total de perspectiva: primero está el mítico Corte Culebra, ese que segó tantas vidas cuando la sierra que le dio nombre fue abierta con fuego de dinamita. Luego están las esclusas de Pedro Miguel y de Miraflores.

ur first few hours on this 24-passenger boat are spent in, ahem, “discovery.” Like any Panamanian, I’m used to seeing ships pass by from the Miraflores Visitor Center and suffering the infernal peakhour traffic jams on one of the two bridges over the Canal, but this journey through the heart of the Canal gave me a completely different perspective: first, there is the legendary man-made valley known as the Culebra Cut, which cost so many lives when the mountain after which it is named was dynamited.

Then there are the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores locks.

El recorrido desde el poblado de Gamboa hasta el océano Pacífico toma unas tres horas. Al día siguiente, y tras una cómoda noche en una de las habitaciones del crucero Discovery, se amanece con la selva de Darién en el horizonte.

Una cosa es saber, en teoría, cómo se llenan de agua las cámaras de cada esclusa del Canal, pero otra cosa es estar en la proa de un barco y experimentar cómo asciende en la cámara, hasta mirar el vacío inmenso de la siguiente; y cómo desciende, hasta sentirse “presa” de esas paredes centenarias.

Superados con éxito ambos juegos de esclusas en dirección norte-sur —para circular por allí se requiere orden estricto y experiencia—, finalmente se alcanza el océano Pacífico. Lo siguiente serían ocho horas de viaje hasta el Golfo de San Miguel, en la provincia de Darién, que transcurrieron en duermevela en un camarote cómodo y tibio.

It takes about three hours to travel from the town of Gamboa to the Pacific Ocean. The next day, after a comfortable night in Discovery’s cabins, we awoke to the Darién jungle on the horizon.

It is one thing to understand the theory of how water fills the chambers of each one of the Canal locks, but it is another entirely to stand in the bow of a ship and feel the boat rise in the chamber while looking at the immense void of the next chamber, and to then drop, until you feel those century-old walls pressing in on you.

With both sets of locks having been successfully negotiated from north to south —you need a lot of experience and strict adherence to regulations to sail here— we finally reach the Pacific Ocean. We spent the 8 hours it took to reach the Gulf of San Miguel in Darién Province lightly slumbering in a warm and comfortable cabin.

Al levantarme ese sábado tenía frente a mí la inquietante selva del Darién: vasta, fascinante, sorpresiva. Tomado el desayuno, el plan de ese día era visitar La Chunga, una comunidad emberá establecida a orillas del río Sambú, que se ha organizado para contarles y mostrarles a los turistas algunos aspectos de su historia y cultura.

I awoke that Saturday to see the exciting Darién jungle: vast, fascinating, and surprising. Our post-breakfast plan was to visit La Chunga, an Emberá community on the banks of the Sambú River, where visitors can learn about the group’s history and culture.

Para llegar a La Chunga hubo que abordar una lancha capaz de navegar por las sinuosas aguas del río Sambú. El viaje transcurrió sin mayores sorpresas hasta que, tras una curva, apareció una docena de piraguas desde las que varios hombres tiraban sedales al río. Pescaban, en silencio, mientras algunas aves intentaban hurtar el producto de la pesca. Trabajaban para llevar comida a sus familias, en una escena tan antigua como la historia de la humanidad.

To reach La Chunga, we boarded a launch that could navigate the meandering Sambú River. There were no major surprises until we rounded a curve and came upon a dozen dugout canoes from which a number of men cast fishing lines into the river. They fished in silence while birds tried to steal their catch. In a scene as old as the history of humanity, the men were working to bring food home to their families.

Los emberás son uno de los siete grupos indígenas que habitan el territorio panameño. Son muy conocidos por sus tallados en tagua y en madera, y por sus tejidos.

The Emberá are one of seven groups of indigenous peoples inhabiting Panama. They are known for their wood and tagua palm-nut carvings and their textiles.

A medida que el río se adentraba en tierra firme se fue angostando el camino. En un momento dado, hubo un desvío hacia un canal flanqueado por unos manglares cuyas raíces parecían extraídas de alguna saga fantástica: su belleza hipnotizaba.

The route narrowed as the river pushed further inland. At one point, we detoured toward a canal lined with mangroves, the roots of which seemed to have emerged from some fantasy saga, impressing us with their hypnotic beauty.

Ya en La Chunga, unas niñas con paruma (la falda tradicional de las mujeres emberá) fueron a recibir la comitiva. La comunidad es un caserío con una escuela pequeña, una casa comunal y una cancha que sirve para jugar fútbol o baloncesto.

When we arrived in La Chunga, girls wearing the paruma (traditional skirt worn by Emberá women) came out to welcome us.

The community is a hamlet with a small school, a communal house, and a sports court for soccer and basketball.

Las mujeres tejen cestas con diseños y formas variadas, utilizando fibras extraídas de palmas (chunga y nahuala). Los varones también trabajan la madera del cocobolo, una especie dura de muy bello color. Yo le compré a Rogelio un bastón en el que talló dos iguanas macho de monte, peleando por una hembra.

fter watching cultural performances, we had the opportunity to purchase handicrafts: the Emberá do exquisite work with tagua (palm nut), carving realistic, finely-detailed animals.

The women weave baskets of varying shapes and designs, using fibers obtained from chunga and nahuala palms. The men also work cocobolo wood, a hardwood that comes in a range of lovely colors.

I bought a cane from Rogelio that was carved with two male iguanas fighting over a female from Rogelio.

Para llegar fuimos en kayaks, una manera excelente de abrazar el mar. Ya en la playa, los paseantes extranjeros disfrutaron del mar tibio —una experiencia desconocida en sus tierras—, mientras otros preferimos caminar sobre la arena para descubrir caracoles y paisajes.

Given that the day was cloudy —Panama’s rainy season runs from May to November— our visit to Cañas Island was pleasant, albeit brief. We arrived by kayak, which is a wonderful way to experience the ocean.

Once on the beach, foreign tourists enjoyed the warm sea —something they don’t have at home— while the rest of us chose to walk along the sand to look for shells and scenery.

Estando ahí en la playa recordé lo que me había ocurrido horas antes. Todos los camarotes del crucero tienen ventanales y, como los cuartos están en la parte más baja de la embarcación, la vista desde la cama es prácticamente al nivel del mar. Resulta que era temprano en la mañana y todavía no me había levantado. Abrí las persianas, me acosté otro rato y me dediqué a mirar el vaivén del mar.

Being there on the beach reminded me of what had happened a few hours earlier. All the ship’s cabins have large windows, and since the cabins are on the lowest level of the ship, the view from our beds is practically at sea level. It was very early and I hadn’t risen for the day yet. I opened the blinds, laid down again, and watched the swell of the ocean.

The Las Perlas Archipelago lies in the Gulf of Panama. With 39 islands and some 100 islets, it is still possible to find deserted beaches here.

o voy a mentirles: estar en un barco implica cierta fortaleza estomacal.

Pero mientras miraba esa vastedad oceánica apareció de pronto una columna de pelícanos que, perfectamente alineados, volaban a ras del agua a escasos metros de mi ventana. No tengo que decirles que aquella escena terminó de despertarme: la naturaleza se mostraba espléndida y cercana y yo quedé sonriendo como una niña.

La experiencia del viaje en el crucero terminó en la marina del Causeway, en Ciudad de Panamá, con otra escena inusual: el rescate de un oso perezoso de dos garras que, de alguna manera, había llegado al embarcadero y se exponía a morir aplastado. El animalito, porque aún era bebé, fue rescatado y llevado a un bosquecillo cercano.

o be honest, being on a boat requires a certain amount of intestinal fortitude. As I stared at the vast expanse of ocean, a perfectlyaligned string of pelicans suddenly appeared, skimming the water just outside my window. You won’t be surprised to hear that such a tableau woke me up: splendid nature had come to call, and I couldn’t stop smiling.

My cruise experience ended at the Causeway Marina in Panama City, with another unusual scene: the rescue of a two-toed sloth that had somehow gotten stranded on the pier and was in danger of being squashed. The baby animal was rescued and taken to a nearby grove of trees.

aminar por el barrio de Pelourinho, en la ciudad brasileña de Salvador, es muy difícil. Te retiene la brisa, que pretende abrazarte cada vez que te paras bajo la sombra de una fachada o un árbol; te encanta la voz de sus habitantes, que pareciera una canción llena de requiebros; el ritmo del birimbao quisiera sujetarte y moverte de las caderas, en sensual condena, por el resto de tus días; el color de sus fachadas te asalta y deslumbra, el aroma que sale de sus cocinas te aferra por la nariz y te quiere llevar de la barbilla hasta las viandas de las que emana. Sí, es muy difícil caminar por las calles de Pelourinho, pero hace años que mi trabajo me impone semejantes retos, así que estoy acostumbrado a sacrificarme.

Mi “viacrucis” comienza desde el sitio mismo en el que me hospedo: el Hotel Fera Palace. Construido en la década de los 30 y restaurado hace poco, te evoca al glamour del art déco, actualizado por supuesto. Me tomo un coctel mientras espero al resto de mi grupo y admiro su lobby.

Quisiera mimetizarme con el ambiente, buscarme un sombrero panamá y vestir un terno de pana clara, no vaya ser que me tope con el fantasma de Orson Welles, Pablo Neruda, Carmen Miranda o algún otro de los huéspedes ilustres que se alojaron aquí.

Tomé de Souza, fundador de la ciudad, escogió este sitio porque se levantaba en un promontorio de casi noventa metros de alto, abrigado dentro de la Bahía de Todos los Santos, ofreciendo una defensa natural contra los enemigos de Portugal.

The city’s founder, Tomé de Souza, chose this site because it stood on a promontory nearly 300 feet high and was sheltered by Todos los Santos Bay, which provided natural protection against Portugal’s enemies.

I

t requires a certain amount of strength to stroll the neighborhood of Pelourinho in the Brazilian city of Salvador. The wind grabs hold of you, striving to embrace you when you pause in the shade of a façade or a tree; you’re brought to a standstill by the inhabitants’ speech, so like a song of fulsome compliments; the rhythm of the berimbau seizes you and persistently induces you to sensuously sway your hips; the color of the façades filters into your eyes and dazzles you; and aromas wafting from kitchens tug at your nostrils in an attempt to lead you to the food. Yes, it takes a certain amount of fortitude to stroll the streets of Pelourinho, but my work has inured me to precisely these kinds of challenges over the years, so I’m used to making this type of sacrifice.

My “ordeal” begins at my lodgings in the Hotel Fera Palace. Built in the 1930s and recently restored, it evokes the glamour of Art Deco, but with a modern twist. I wait for the rest of my group while sipping a cocktail and admiring the lobby. I’d like to blend into the scenery, put on a Panama hat and don a 3-piece suit of pale corduroy in case I should encounter the shades of Orson Welles, Pablo Neruda, Carmen Miranda, or any of the other illustrious former guests of this hotel.

a afuera, nos encaminamos por la calle Chile, antaño la vía comercial más elegante de la ciudad, que comunicaba su centro histórico con los sectores comerciales más cercanos al puerto. La Chile hace un recodo para desembocar en la Praça de Sé y de ahí se avanza un par de cuadras hasta el Largo Terreiro de Jesús. Incluso antes de doblar la última esquina y salir a este gran espacio, se siente la hipnotizante cadencia del birimbao que acompaña a un grupo practicante de la capoeira.

Suave al principio, la danza va subiendo de intensidad hasta que los cuerpos se enlazan en una discusión de gestos borrosos, al ritmo del pandeiro, el caxixi y el reco-reco, entre otros instrumentos de percusión.

El rápido devenir de torsos y piernas de la capoeira puede retenerte por un tiempo, pero tarde o temprano alzas la vista, giras la cabeza y te vas encontrando con los edificios públicos y religiosos que caracterizan al que fue el centro neurálgico de la población durante buena parte de su esplendor colonial y más allá. Al noroeste se yergue la Catedral Basílica de Salvador, levantada en 1933 sobre los restos de un templo jesuita. Sobre cada una de sus tres puertas preside uno de los santos titulares de dicha orden religiosa: San Ignacio de Loyola, San Francisco Javier y San Francisco de Borja.

El Pelourinho (“picota” en español) es un grueso pilar donde se encadenaba a los esclavos para castigarlos. En Salvador, el espacio en el que se ubicaba este instrumento de tortura terminó por darle nombre al barrio que lo rodeaba.

The name of this instrument of torture was later extended to the surrounding neighborhood.

ack outside, we head toward Calle Chile, once the city’s most elegant shopping avenue, which links the historic district to business districts closer to the port. Calle Chile makes a sharp turn into Praça de Sé and from there it’s a couple of blocks to Largo Terreiro de Jesús. Even before rounding the last corner and stepping into this enormous space, you can feel the hypnotic cadence of the berimbau that accompanies a group practicing capoeira. Gentle at first, the dance grows in intensity until bodies curve into a dialogue of blurred movements set to the rhythm of the pandeiro, the caxixi, and the reco-reco, among other percussion instruments.

Capoeira’s rapidly-shifting dynamics of torsos and legs holds your attention for a while, but eventually you look up, turn your head, and notice the government and religious buildings of what was once the town’s nerve center during a good part of the Colonial period’s glory days and beyond. To the northwest sits the Basilica of Salvador, built in 1933 atop the remains of a Jesuit church. Each one of its three doors is topped with one of the patron saints of the Jesuit order: St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Francis Borgia.

Otros edificios importantes en el Terreiro son las iglesias de São Pedro dos Clérigos y São Domingos de Gusmão, así como la antigua Escuela de Medicina, donde funciona el Museo Afrobrasileño, que exhibe una rica colección de arte, vestuario, máscaras rituales, instrumentos musicales y objetos cerámicos. Naturalmente, la impronta afrodescendiente es pilar fundamental de la historia y el patrimonio cultural de Salvador.

Other important buildings in the Terreiro are the churches of São Pedro dos Clérigos and São Domingos de Gusmão, along with the former School of Medicine, which currently houses the Afro-Brazilian Museum, a rich trove of art, clothing, ritual masks, musical instruments, and ceramic objects.

The influence of Afro-descendants is naturally a fundamental part of the history and cultural legacy of Salvador.

Tanto es así que, desde hace décadas, el Terreiro cedió preminencia a otro espacio público que fue escenario de escarnio y terror para quienes fueron traídos de África, pero que hoy es casi un epicentro cultural de la ciudad. Se trata de la ladera del Pelourinho, unos trescientos metros al noreste, siguiendo la calle Alfredo Brito. Pelourinho en portugués significa “picota”: un tronco grueso al que se clavaban anillas para encadenar a los esclavos. For decades, the Terreiro was less significant than another public space that symbolized contempt and terror for peoples brought from Africa, but it is now essentially an epicenter of culture in Salvador. We’re talking about the slopes of Pelourinho, some 1,000 feet to the northeast along Calle Alfredo Brito. The Portuguese word pelourinho means “pillory”: a stout pillar equipped with rings to which slaves were chained. I suspect that it was placed on the heights as a form of intimidation: men and women were tortured, many to death, in an elevated position visible to the public.

he church and convent of the Third Order of St. Francis on the plaza’s southern side are reached by crossing a vast expanse of cafés, small hotels, and handicraft shops, where tourists ramble about and local residents play dominoes or sit in doorways to chat and watch the world go by. The severity of St. Francis is misleading; I barely step through the sacristy doors before finding myself facing a chaotic wood and tempera saga that narrates the prophetic dreams of St. Francis, mixed with biblical scenes. Inside the church, my eyes follow the classic gold curlicues that snake along the walls and ceiling in a representation of the Portuguese baroque style. It is said that scraping all the gold leaf off the carvings would yield nearly 2,000 pounds of the precious metal.

Instead, we look up to gaze upon the façades of the Jorge Amado Foundation and the City Museum, institutions committed to the uplift of humanity; the former preserves the legacy of the Bahía author and promotes literature in the state, while the latter conserves cultural treasures that epitomize the city, including its history, religion, cuisine, and art, among other cultural elements. But these are not the only cultural centers located in the splendid neighborhood of Pelourinho. The drumming and song emanating from the Bahía Folk Ballet’s rehearsal can always be heard close to the slope, and the nearby streets are home to the Eugenio Teixeira Leal, Tempostal, and Abelardo Rodrigues museums, along with the Museum of the Imaginary Object and the Museum of Bahía Cuisine. Wishing to learn a little about the ingredients that make Salvador a gastronomic destination, we head for this last museum.

Complementamos la visita con una parada para almorzar en el Restaurante Escuela Senac de Pelourinho, distante pocos metros. Como estoy de paso y quiero llevarme la mayor cantidad de experiencias gustativas sin que se me revienten los botones de la camisa, convierto mi plato en una paleta de pintor en la que pongo una porción pequeña de cada manjar posible.

Luego del opíparo almuerzo y de una sabrosa sobremesa, aderezada por el delicioso y aromático café de la zona, nos levantamos para acometer la última fase de la jornada: caminar hasta el Largo do Santo Antônio Além do Carmo. Usualmente, los turistas hacen este camino en ómnibus, pero la pecaminosa ingesta calórica que nos acabamos de dar nos pesa en la conciencia (y en la barriga) y nos imponemos la “penitencia” de caminar el poco más de kilómetro y medio que separa ambos espacios.

La romería la hacemos a lo largo de la Ladera do Carmo y la Rua Direita de Santo Antônio, a nuestro ritmo, gozando de fachadas de vivo color y deteniéndonos ante las estructuras más importantes: la Igreja do Santíssimo Sacramento, por ejemplo, y la Igreja do Carmo, que da nombre a este barrio.

ortheastern cuisine in general, and Bahía cuisine in particular, is so extensive, complex, sophisticated, and delicious that it has become a key element of Brazil’s culinary identity. The museum introduces us to foods like dendé (palm) oil and fariña (cassava flour), both essential to dishes like moqueca (fish or seafood stew), tapioca, and the essential acarajé (deepfried balls of mashed beans). We wrap up our visit with lunch at the nearby Pelourinho Senac Restaurant School. During my brief visit here I want to collect as many taste experiences as I can without busting the buttons of my trousers, so I turn my plate into a painter’s palette of small portions of as many delights as possible.

After a splendid lunch and lovely postprandial conversation, complemented by the delicious and aromatic local coffee, we press on to the last part of our day: a walk to Largo do Santo Antônio Além do Carmo. Tourists generally make this trip by bus, but the sinful amount of calories we have consumed weighs on our consciences (and on our stomachs) and we walk the mile to our destination as a self-imposed penance.

We make our pilgrimage along Ladera do Carmo and Rua Direita de Santo Antônio at our own pace, enjoying the brightly-colored façades and pausing in front of the most important structures: the Church of the Santíssimo Sacramento, for example, and the Church of Carmo, which gives its name to this neighborhood.

unto a la última se halla el Convento do Carmo, que ahora es uno de los hoteles más exclusivos de Bahía.

La caminata nos aleja también del bullicio del Pelourinho y del Terreiro, más frecuentados por el turismo, y nos deja entrever, tras puertas y contraventanas entornadas, cómo transcurre la cotidianidad de sus habitantes.

Cuando arribamos a Santo Antônio Além do Carmo (“más allá del Carmen”, en español), la modorra que nos acosaba tras el almuerzo se ha disipado por completo.

Este barrio, alejado durante muchos años del estrellato turístico del centro de Pelourinho, acoge talleres de artistas y artesanos. En su plaza se levanta la parroquia de Santo Antônio, una de las más antiguas de la ciudad, cuyo diseño acusa estilos arquitectónicos que van desde el barroco hasta el neoclásico. A su lado la Fortaleza do Santo Antônio marca el límite norteño del distrito histórico.

Durante la segunda invasión holandesa, en 1638, la fortaleza fue uno de los principales focos de resistencia de la población. Actualmente es conocida como Fortaleza de Capoeira, pues diversas escuelas de esta danza marcial ubican aquí sus sedes de práctica desde la década de 1980.

Attacks by pirates and enemy powers, plagues, the displacement of the capital to Río de Janeiro, and the collapse of the sugar industry depressed the city’s spirits for many decades, but times have fortunately changed.

ext to this latter stands the Carmo Convent, which has been converted into one of the most exclusive hotels in Bahia. The walk carries us away from the hustle and bustle of the heavily-touristed Pelourinho and Terreiro and gives us a glimpse of the residents’ daily lives behind the doors and shutters.

The food-induced stupor has dissipated by the time we reach Santo Antônio Além do Carmo (meaning “beyond Carmel”). Long isolated from the tourist boom in the center of Pelourinho, this neighborhood is the place to seek out the workshops of artists and artisans. In the plaza stands one of the city’s oldest churches, the parish church of Santo Antônio, the architecture of which evinces styles that run the gamut from baroque to neo-Classical. Next door, the Santo Antônio Fortress marks the northern border of the historic district.

A seat of resistance during the second Dutch invasion in 1638, the fortress is currently known as Fortaleza de Capoeira, since various schools of this martial-arts dance have been practiced here since the 1980s.

he afternoon shadows lengthen and we head for our last —actually next-to-last— stop: the Monument to Tomé de Souza, the city’s founder and Brazil’s first governor. A look around the plaza gives us a sense of the power of government and the march of history: the plaza is flanked by Salvador’s City Hall, constructed in 1549 shortly after the city was founded; the Rio Branco Palace, rebuilt in 1859 in the Republican style, and home to Bahía’s federal governor; and the modern Prefecture of Salvador (built in 1973), designed by architect João da Gama Filgueiras Lima, who cut his professional teeth during the building of Brasilia.

Salvador’s historic Colonial district was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

ne other thing we should mention is the Lacerda Elevator, which links the upper city with the port. The current version of the Elevator dates to 1930. Don’t be frightened if you feel like it’s descending very quickly: it is designed to do just that, given that every day it serves thousands of Soteropolitanos, as natives of Salvador are called. The Modelo Market awaits at the end of the ride, so you’ll quickly forget any discomfort. Although it is not actually part of the Colonial district, the Market is still historic. Built in 1912, it features handicrafts shops and restaurants on the second floor.

It is here, sitting under the umbrellas on the terrace with good beers in hand as we wait for the sun to set, that Pelourinho imposes its last and most difficult test on me: making me leave when I don’t want to.

So how can you effectively ask for help? How can you impose upon people without making them feel imposed upon?

erhaps the easiest way to overcome the pain of asking for help is to realize that most people are surprisingly willing to lend a hand. When Vanessa Bohns reviewed a group of experiments that she and her coauthors had done, she found that compliance — the rate at which people provided assistance to strangers who asked for it — was an average of 48% higher than the help-seekers had expected.

Studies also suggest that we underestimate how much effort those who do agree to help will put in.

That’s in part because saying no or helping only halfheartedly carries a psychological cost that we tend to discount. But it’s also because most helpers know that giving freely of themselves has great emotional benefits.

The key to a successful request for help is to shift the focus to these benefits. You want people to feel that they would be helping because they want to, and that they’re in control of the decision. That means avoiding any language suggesting that they have no choice but to help. This includes prefaces such as “May I ask you a favor?” and profuse apologies such as “I feel terrible asking you for this,” which make the experience seem less positive. Emphasizing reciprocity — “I’ll help you if you help me” — can also backfire because people don’t like to be indebted to anyone. And minimizing your need — “I don’t normally ask for help” — is unproductive because it suggests the assistance is trivial or even unnecessary.

But you can ask for help in a way that avoids these pitfalls. That’s by using what I call reinforcements, or cues, which you can incorporate in specific requests:

Helpers must realize that you need help. Humans, as a rule, are preoccupied with their own affairs so the first step is making people aware of your problem.

One reinforcement you’ll want to give a potential helper is assurance that you’re on his team and that the team is important. This taps into the innate human need to belong to supportive social circles. There are several ways to do this. Say, “Have you noticed that we get interrupted all the time?” (a shared experience).

Positive Identity: A second cue for potential helpers involves enhancing their recognition that they are uniquely placed to provide assistance and that they are helpful people who routinely come to others’ aid. For example, studies have shown that people contribute more to charity when asked if they would like to “be a generous donor” (versus “to donate”).

Effectiveness People want to see the impact of the aid they will give. Many psychologists believe that feeling effective is the fundamental human motivation. To ensure that your potential helpers know that their assistance will matter, be very clear about what you need and its projected impact. For example, when asking a colleague to review a client proposal, you might say, “Would you please review this before I send it to XYZ? Your input really helped my previous pitch to ABC succeed.”

When I explain to people how these strategies work in practice, I often give an example from my personal life, involving an IKEA bookshelf.

About a year ago, a friend asked me to help her assemble a particularly complicated one, and I eagerly agreed.

That same morning, I’d turned down a request to review a submission to a scientific journal and ignored an email from my daughter’s school asking for parent volunteers to help with an ice cream party. So why was the do-it-yourself request an easy yes?

One reason is that the person asking was a longstanding friend with whom I enjoy spending time (in-group reinforcement). Another is that I’m weirdly good at such projects, and for years, I’d been her go-to gal for help with them (effectiveness).

nd finally, whenever we work together in this way, my friend always wraps up by saying something like “Heidi, thank you. You are always so helpful and generous” (positive identity).

I’ve seen situations play out the same way in professional settings. Consider the head of product development at a learning software company who wanted more input with the sales department, which was making his team’s work difficult by telling customers that highly customized orders could be delivered according to near-impossible schedules. He pleaded to be included in discussions with clients but was often ignored; the people in sales believed that he would be an obstacle to their success.

Eventually, the frustrated executive decided to take a fresh approach to getting the cooperation he needed from his colleagues. He set up a meeting with sales leaders to talk through the product development process, realizing that most of the team didn’t understand why their help was needed. He began to emphasize in every interaction that they all shared the goal of pleasing the customer, creating a strong sense of in-group camaraderie with the sales team. Suddenly it was clear that everyone was on the same side.

ature forests are important biodiverse sources of oxygen for all living beings and act as our allies in the face of climate change. But what benefits and environmental services do they provide? Do secondary forests, plantations, and paddock areas provide these same benefits?

Is reforestation a good idea and, above all, how is it accomplished? To answer these questions, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) scientist Dr. Jefferson Hall and his team have launched the Agua Salud project in the Panama Canal watershed.

Jefferson explica que un bosque secundario es aquel que resulta de procesos naturales cuando la tierra se restaura por sí sola después de haber sido utilizada para otros fines como la ganadería. También explica que para poder restaurar los servicios ambientales de un bosque o tener una buena plantación de madera, incluso si tenemos ganado, se debe hacer una reforestación inteligente. La idea es poner la especie correcta en el lugar preciso, en el tiempo adecuado y por una razón acertada.

Todo esto dependerá de las necesidades que se tengan para la reforestación.

heir objective is understanding how forest ecosystems work and measuring the environmental services they provide in order to reproduce these services. They also hope to develop new models to predict the behavior of water and carbon sequestration in these new forests in the face of climate change.

Jefferson explains that secondary forests are those that result from natural processes when the land recovers after being used for other purposes, such as pasture.

He adds that, in order to restore a forest’s environmental services or ensure the success of a timber plantation or even a cattle ranch, intelligent reforestation is a must. The goal is to place the right species of trees in the right place at the right time, for the right reason. And all of this depends on why an area is being reforested.

El proyecto pretende analizar si el bosque realmente es un reservorio y funciona como una esponja, que absorbe agua en el suelo durante la estación lluviosa y la libera durante la estación seca. Para medir este efecto, tienen “vertederos” o microcuencas que permiten a los hidrogeólogos conocer con alta precisión el flujo de agua en la quebrada. Para poder comparar resultados analizan una microcuenca en el bosque del Parque Nacional Soberanía, otra que reúne un mosaico entre agricultura, bosque secundario maduro y potrero, y una más en un potrero. Y comparan resultados tanto en estación seca como en lluviosa.

The goal of the project is to analyze whether a forest is truly a reservoir, working like a sponge to absorb water in the soil during the rainy season and releasing it during the dry season. To measure this effect, “spillways” or microbasins are created to precisely measure a stream’s current. The results of the measurements are then compared: a micro-basin in the Soberanía National Park forest is compared to a mosaic-like area that includes agriculture, mature secondary forest, and pasture land, and to another located in a paddock. The results from both dry and rainy seasons are also compared.

The project was able to demonstrate that, although trees use a lot of water, they also facilitate infiltration of large quantities of water into the soil thanks to their roots and the work of insects associated with trees, such as ants, which create holes in the ground that increase infiltration. It also showed that planting trees of any kind –teak plantations, silvopastoral systems, secondary forests, or native species– helps improve water infiltration.

En 2013, cuando la estación seca estuvo muy fuerte, pudieron observar que había 25% más agua en el bosque que en el potrero. In 2013, during an especially dry season, the scientists found that the forest retained 25% more water than the paddock. This additional water supplied the Canal, as well as the nearly two million people who depend on the basin, during the four months of drought, even during that difficult year.

Secondary Forest Jefferson’s group is interested not only in the possibility of preserving mature forests and biodiversity, but also in the environmental services provided by secondary forests, their importance for water conservation, and their carboncapturing capacity, as well as their contribution to mitigating climate change.

Scientists use a chronosequence system in plots with forests of different ages to understand the trajectory of a secondary forest over a period of years. Chronological results show that, by the fifteenth year, the light inside a secondary forest is similar to that of a mature forest, and the forest is home to up to six hundred different tree and vine species. By the twentieth year, the same forest is already producing fifty tons of

biomass for every 2.5 acres, and although this is far from the 125 tons produced by a mature forest on Barro Colorado Island, for example, it nevertheless represents a considerable amount of carbon sequestration. Secondary forests have been found to be a viable and economical strategy for lowering the costs of carbon capturing.

Jefferson adds that we need to do more than lower the rate of deforestation to reduce the effects of climate change; we must also strive for a lowcarbon economy and continue to reforest.

Ya sabemos que el bosque secundario ayuda en el aumento de la biodiversidad, del agua y del secuestro del carbono. La pregunta siguiente es ¿qué pasa si reforestamos con especies nativas?

Según Jefferson, hay cuatro especies que se utilizan para la reforestación: teca, eucalipto, pino y acacia, debido al fácil acceso a sus semillas y porque se conoce su manejo, el cómo sembrarlos. Sin embargo, no crecen bien en todos los lugares y el monocultivo no es conveniente.

We know that secondary forests increase biodiversity, water, and carbon sequestration, but what happens if we reforest with native species? According to Jefferson, four species are most often used to reforest: teak, eucalyptus, pine, and acacia, because their seeds are easy to access and we know how to plant and care for them. However, they don’t grow well everywhere or in monocultures.

The Native Species Reforestation Project (PRORENA, in Spanish) began with a collaboration between the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, the Panama Canal Authority, and the Ministry of the Environment. It aims to understand the right native species to use for reforestation and how to generate income for landowners through reforestation.

Según Jefferson, es por falta de conocimiento: no sabemos cómo germinarlas, manejarlas en el vivero ni cómo será su crecimiento. El resultado del primer proyecto de ensayo es un libro que ilustra cómo manejar 120 especies nativas en vivero y como germinar sus semillas. Un ejemplo es la semilla del corotú (Enterolobium cyclocarpum): tan dura, que es necesario cortarle un pedazo y sumergirla en agua un tiempo antes de plantarla. Si no se sigue este procedimiento, la semilla podría demorar un año en germinar. De la segunda etapa del proyecto se escribió otro libro con la guía de otras 64 especies nativas.

PRORENA is particularly interested in understanding why people don’t use native species. According to Jefferson, it’s due to a lack of knowledge of how to germinate them, care for them in the nursery, and manage their growth. The first trial project produced a book that illustrates how to manage 120 native species in the nursery and germinate their seeds. One example is the corotú seed (Enterolobium cyclocarpum), which is so hard that a piece of it must be cut and soaked in water for a while before planting. If this procedure is not followed, the seed can take up to a year to germinate. The second stage of the project produced a second book with guidelines for growing 64 other native species.

Secondary forests provide a viable and economical strategy for lowering the costs of carbon capturing.

nother goal of the project is to understand how species behave with their neighbors, whether they help each other grow or compete for resources, space, and time. Two species –one with shallow roots and one with deep roots– for example, can be alternated so that one takes water from the top of the soil and the other draws from a deeper level, eliminating competition for water.

The study showed that planting trees of any kind helps improve water infiltration, either through roots or insects.

There are many cases of people who set up teak plantations only to abandon them. An analysis of these plantations carried out in 2015 in the Panama Canal Basin found that the tree only does well in soil with sufficient limestone; a crop without the proper soil will not give consistent returns on investment.

But a study of this type of plantation helps us understand how trees can be planted in degraded soils.

There are now about 7.4 billion people on the planet and good soil is generally reserved for agriculture. The planting of trees for carbon sequestration and timber usually takes place in poor soil.

Agua Salud and Smart Reforestation are working to learn how to use these areas, converting timber plantations that have failed to produce the necessary yields (by planting the wrong tree in the wrong soil) into profitable businesses by taking advantage, for example, of shady areas to plant native trees.

The existing teak trees can be used as a “nursery” and cut down later when the new ones reach a good height.

An analysis of these plantations has also demonstrated that amarillo trees (Terminalia amazonia) and cocobolo trees (Dalbergia retusa) grow very well in poor soil.

In just three years, the cocobolo –whose wood is worth more than US 2,000 dollars per cubic meter– reaches the same height as a ten year-old teak tree.

l almendro de montaña (Dipteryx panamensis), que crece bien a la sombra, atrae animales y aves. Y uno de los favoritos de Jefferson: la quira (Platymiscium pinnatum) tiene casi el mismo valor que el cocobolo, aunque puede tener una forma más recta, y es fijador de nitrógeno. Un estudio realizado con esta planta, publicado en la revista Nature, demuestra que, a partir de los veinte años, esta especie fija mucho nitrógeno, lo cual le da un rol muy importante en el bosque secundario. La idea es aprovechar este conocimiento en el bosque secundario y utilizarlo en la plantación, debido a que este árbol crece muy bien debajo de la teca.

Por otra parte, la ganadería es una de las principales causas de deforestación en Latinoamérica. Por esta razón se está estudiando también el sistema silvopastoril, su relación con el agua y la forma en que este sistema podría aumentar la producción de carne o de leche.

And one of Jefferson’s favorites, the quira (Platymiscium pinnatum), sells for nearly the same price as the cocobolo and is often straighter and acts as a nitrogen fixer.

A study conducted with this plant and published in Nature showed that, from age twenty on, this species fixes substantial amounts of nitrogen, making it a very important part of the secondary forest.

The project hopes to take advantage of this knowledge of secondary forest behavior and apply it to plantations, as this tree grows very well below the teaks.

It is also important to note that livestock is one of the main causes of deforestation in Latin America. Additional studies are being made of the silvopastoral system, its relationship with water, and the ways this system could increase meat or dairy production.

abrielle Britton, doctora en Neurociencias y en Psicología, fue profesora de Estadísticas, Neurofisiología y Diseño Experimental en Lafayette College, pequeña universidad de Pensilvania (Estados Unidos), y ahora es investigadora principal de un estudio que comenzó en Panamá en 2011 y que promete esclarecer cómo envejecen sus habitantes y qué factores inciden para que algunos envejezcan bien y otros no.

Denominado Panama Aging Research Initiative (PARI; es decir, Iniciativa de Investigación enfocada en el Adulto Mayor), el estudio ha capturado los datos de más de setecientas personas mayores de sesenta años. A partir del análisis de esos datos se comienzan a saber algunas cosas: que la población panameña es longeva, que los adultos mayores padecen varias enfermedades crónicas y que, como en otras naciones, un factor genético predispone a los habitantes del país centroamericano al desarrollo del Alzheimer, la forma más común de demencia entre las personas mayores.

Un equipo del Instituto de Investigaciones Científicas y Servicios de Alta Tecnología (INDICASAT) de Panamá realiza, desde hace siete años, el primer estudio en el país para determinar cómo envejecen los panameños y cómo cambia la capacidad cognitiva con la edad.

abrielle Britton, who holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Psychology, worked for many years as a professor of Statistics, Neurophysiology, and Experimental Design at Lafayette College, a small college in Pennsylvania (United States). Now she is the principal investigator of a study that began in Panama in 2011 and promises to shed light on how the country’s inhabitants age and what factors influence the quality of their aging process.

The Panama Aging Research Initiative (PARI) study has collected data from more than 700 people 60 years and older. Analysis of the data revealed several facts: Panamanians live long lives; elderly Panamanians suffer from several chronic diseases; and, as in other countries, a genetic factor predisposes inhabitants of this Central American nation to Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia among the elderly.

Seven years ago, a team from Panama’s Institute of Scientific Research and Advanced Technology Services (INDICASAT, in Spanish) embarked on the nation’s first study of how Panamanians age, with a focus on how cognitive capacities change as we get older.

Entiendo que usted vivía en Estados Unidos. ¿Por qué regresa a Panamá y por qué se interesa en estudiar el proceso de envejecimiento?

Estudié y trabajé en Estados Unidos por más de veinte años, y en el 2006 regresé a Panamá por medio de una convocatoria de repatriación de talentos que tenía la Secretaría Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Investigación. Fue una decisión difícil, porque ya estaba trabajando en una universidad en Estados Unidos y me había costado mucho llegar allí.

Soy doctora en Neurociencias y en Psicología, y siempre me ha interesado todo lo relacionado con el aprendizaje y la memoria. En ese tiempo llegaron más investigadores y nos sentamos a hablar para encontrar un tema que fuera prioritario para el país, y ese fue el tema del envejecimiento. El estudio lleva ya siete años y es un estudio longitudinal; estudiamos un grupo de adultos mayores y los seguimos a lo largo del tiempo, para poder ver cambios.

Se calcula que en todo el mundo hay 962 millones de personas con sesenta años o más; es decir, un 13% de la población. En Panamá, este grupo etario representa al 10% de los habitantes.

I understand that you lived in the United States. Why did you return to Panama and why are you interested in studying the aging process?

I studied and worked in the United States for more than twenty years. In 2006, I returned to Panama as part of the National Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Research’s initiative to “repatriate” Panamanian talent. It was a difficult decision, because I was working at a university in the United States at the time, and I had worked hard to get there.

I’m a neuroscientist and a psychologist and I’ve always been interested in all things related to learning and memory. Other researchers arrived around the same time and we sat down to discuss the topics we thought were a priority for the country and together chose the issue of aging. The study has been going on for seven years now and is longitudinal, meaning we study a group of older adults and follow them over time to track their changes.

¿Dónde reclutaron a los adultos mayores y qué están buscando exactamente?

Empezamos en el Complejo Hospitalario de la Caja de Seguro Social, donde se atiende al 70% de la población del país. Esta primera cohorte (grupo) fue de 65 años en adelante.

Les hicimos diferentes pruebas a lo largo de cuatro años para ver cómo cambiaba su estado de salud, porque algunos (adultos mayores) desarrollan deterioro cognitivo; otros no. Algunos tienen pocas enfermedades crónicas y presentan un envejecimiento saludable; otros envejecen con menos salud. Hicimos entonces un número de estudios importantes sobre cuáles son los factores que provocan el Alzheimer y el deterioro cognitivo leve en los panameños. Cerramos ese protocolo y redactamos un segundo, y ahora estamos en una segunda fase, reclutando en la comunidad.

Nosotros no tuvimos que reinventar la rueda; estos protocolos son estándar. La cosa es que en los países desarrollados se han estado haciendo estos estudios desde hace veinte o treinta años, pero en Panamá es el primero de este tipo.

Where did you find your senior recruits and what are you looking for exactly?

We began at the Complejo Hospitalario de la Caja de Seguro Social (Social Security Hospital Complex), which treats 70% of Panama’s population. The first group was comprised of people 65 years old and older.

We ran different tests over a period of four years to see how their health changed; some (older adults) develop cognitive impairment and others do not. Some present few chronic diseases and a healthy aging process while others aren’t as healthy. We then performed a number of important studies to determine the factors that cause Alzheimer’s and mild cognitive impairment in Panamanians. Once that protocol was complete, we designed a second protocol.

We are now in this second phase, doing recruiting in the community.

There was no need to reinvent the wheel; these protocols are standard, but they’ve been going on for twenty or thirty years in developed countries, whereas in Panama, this was the first study of its kind.

Which parameters do you use to determine if a senior adult is in good condition for his or her age?

The evaluations we perform determine the condition of each adult, based on his or her age. The tests we perform are similar to the intelligence tests given to a ten-year-old child: they ascertain the cognitive levels in a variety of areas such as attention, concentration, memory, etc.

There are two types of Alzheimer’s: the hereditary type (affecting 1-5% of the population) and the sporadic type, responsible for 65% of all dementia in older adults.

¿Con qué parámetros determinan si un adulto mayor está bien para su edad?

Las evaluaciones que realizamos permiten determinar cómo está cada adulto según su edad. Las pruebas que les hacemos son como las pruebas de inteligencia que le ponen a un niño de diez años: ellas dicen cuál es el nivel cognitivo en una variedad de dominios, como la atención, concentración, memoria, etcétera.

Ustedes estudian las enfermedades asociadas con el envejecimiento y miden el deterioro cognitivo “normal” y la incidencia de Alzheimer. Es decir, lo que quieren determinar es qué factores inciden para que una persona desarrolle o no Alzheimer.

Exactamente. Eso es lo más valioso de este tipo de estudio, porque cuando tienes más de cuarenta años comienzas a padecer enfermedades crónicas asociadas con la edad. En Panamá, las causas de muerte son el cáncer, los accidentes cardiovasculares y enfermedades neurológicas o del cerebro… Todas son enfermedades asociadas con la edad que tienen los mismos factores

You study the diseases associated with aging and measure “normal” cognitive decline and the incidence of Alzheimer’s. So what you’re trying to determine are the factors that lead to Alzheimer’s.

Exactly. That’s the most valuable thing about this type of study, because when you’re over forty you start to suffer from chronic diseases associated with aging. These causes of death in Panama include cancer, cardiovascular accidents, and neurological or brain diseases, all of which are associated with aging and have the same risk factors: obesity, diabetes, untreated hypertension... It turns out that even those who age normally will show signs of cognitive deterioration, which is normal. Many of us will show signs of deterioration, in varying degrees, and increases in other areas such as general knowledge: older people possess more information and have a larger vocabulary than younger people.

So we’re taking a look over time: if we take blood samples and other measurements from a group of seniors today and then see them and perform the same tests two years later, we’re hoping to find out who has changed during those two years, and whether the changes are associated with blood-based markers, such as inflammatory proteins, and genetic markers, such as the apolipoprotein ApoE4.

Entonces vamos viendo sobre el tiempo: si vemos a un grupo de adultos mayores hoy, les tomamos la sangre y todas las medidas, y dos años después los vemos otra vez y les hacemos las mismas pruebas… Lo que queremos saber es quién cambió, de un punto al otro, y si eso está asociado a unos marcadores en sangre —como las proteínas inflamatorias— y genéticos —como la apolipoproteína E (ApoE4).

La idea es que si podemos usar esa información se pueden tomar medidas para retrasar la aparición de la enfermedad. Es esto lo que estamos tratando de hacer y no lo estamos haciendo solos: Panamá es parte de un grupo internacional que está estudiando lo que se llama biomarcadores basados en sangre. El proyecto es seguir reclutando hasta que tengamos una buena idea del valor predictivo de la muestra de sangre. Eso puede tomar entre ocho y quince años.

The idea is to use the information to take steps to delay the onset of the disease. This is what we’re trying to do and we’re not working alone: Panama is part of an international group that is studying something called blood-based biomarkers. The idea is to continue recruiting until we have a good idea of the predictive value of blood samples. This can take 8-15 years.

uando nos hacemos una mamografía, si los médicos ven una mancha y luego te hacen una prueba genética, te sale el marcador BRCA, que indica que tienes cáncer. Para el Alzheimer, la única manera de identificarlo 100% es post mortem… Cuando la persona está viva y tiene todos los síntomas clínicos (olvidos, incapacidad de cuidarse solo y dificultades en las actividades de la vida diaria), ya en ese momento no hay nada que hacer, porque el Alzheimer es incurable. ¿Cuál es la meta?

Tratar de identificar quién va a desarrollar el Alzheimer, pero veinte años antes, mediante las muestras de sangre y de la presencia del marcador ApoE4.

ith mammograms, for example, when a doctor sees a spot and then runs a genetic test, what he or she finds is the BRCA marker, which indicates that you have cancer. The only 100% effective way to identify Alzheimer’s, however, is post mortem... By the time a living person has developed all the clinical symptoms (forgetfulness, inability to care for themselves, difficulties with daily activities) it’s already too late to do anything, because Alzheimer’s is incurable. What is the goal? We hope to identify those who will develop Alzheimer’s, but twenty years earlier than we can now, through blood samples and the presence of the ApoE4 marker.

¿Cómo se puede retrasar la aparición del Alzheimer?

Digamos que te haces una evaluación y tienes riesgo porque eres diabético y tienes el marcador genético. Si te lo detectan a los 45 años, lo primero que tendrías que hacer es, por ejemplo, si eres obesa, perder peso; si eres hipertensa, controlar la presión; si eres sedentaria, hacer ejercicios… Hay estimaciones que dicen que si podemos controlar estos factores entre los cuarenta y los sesenta años, podríamos reducir el Alzheimer en 30%.

Decirme que tengo riesgo de padecer Alzheimer también es un tema ético. ¿Cómo se está manejando el tema?

Es una pregunta muy compleja para contestar porque tiene implicaciones bioéticas. Hay personas que dicen “a mí no me interesa saberlo”. Y hay personas que dicen “a mí sí”. Lo que nosotros consideramos es que el paciente tiene derecho a saberlo si quiere, y los médicos tienen la responsabilidad de desarrollar la manera correcta de informarles a sus pacientes sobre el riesgo.

El programa de investigación Panama Aging Research Initiative (PARI) busca identificar las causas que inciden en el envejecimiento patológico, así como los factores de protección que permiten envejecer bien.

How can the onset of Alzheimer’s be delayed?

Let’s say you get tested and you’re at risk because you’re a diabetic and you’re carrying a genetic marker. If you’re detected at age 45, the first thing you should do is, for example, if you’re overweight, lose weight; if you’re hypertensive, keep your blood pressure under control; if you have a sedentary lifestyle, start exercising... Certain estimates predict that by controlling these factors between the ages of forty and sixty, we could reduce Alzheimer’s by 30%.

Predicting one’s risk of Alzheimer’s is also an ethical question. How are you handling this issue?

It’s a very complex question because of the bioethical implications. Some people say, “I’d rather not know” and others say, “I want to know.” We believe that patients have the right to know if they so desire, and doctors are responsible for developing the proper ways to inform their patients of these risks.

¿Qué significa para un país como Panamá el hecho de que se esté haciendo un estudio sobre el envejecimiento y el Alzheimer?

El logro principal después de siete años es que, por primera vez, Panamá cuenta con la infraestructura necesaria para realizar estudios con adultos mayores. Por ejemplo, el [Instituto Conmemorativo] Gorgas se nos acercó porque a ellos les interesa ver cómo se están desarrollando los adultos mayores con VIH. Lo interesante del VIH es que antes era una enfermedad infecciosa, pero ahora con el tratamiento retroviral es una enfermedad crónica; por primera vez, las personas que viven con el virus están envejeciendo. Estas personas tienen un tipo de deterioro cognitivo que en la literatura ha sido llamado desorden neurocognitivo asociado al VIH, pero es diferente al deterioro que vemos con el Alzheimer; todavía hay que analizarlo y caracterizarlo a nivel genético y proteómico. Acabamos de escribir la propuesta, están por aprobarnos los fondos y vamos a empezar a ejecutar el estudio.

Actualmente, el diagnóstico de Alzheimer se realiza en fases avanzadas. Los estudios demuestran que un enfoque de detección basado en sangre podría facilitar un diagnóstico precoz a un costo eficiente, con lo que el sistema primario de salud contaría con una herramienta nueva para prevenir la aparición temprana de la enfermedad.

Alzheimer is currently diagnosed only in advanced stages. Studies show that focusing on bloodbased detection could be a cost-efficient way to facilitate early diagnosis, which would mean that primary health systems would have a new tool for preventing early onset of the disease.

What does it mean for a country like Panama to host a study on aging and Alzheimer’s?

The main achievement after seven years is that, for the first time, Panama has the necessary infrastructure to conduct studies with older adults.

The Gorgas Institute (Instituto Conmemorativo Gorgas, in Spanish) approached us with an interest in seeing how older adults with HIV are faring. The interesting thing about HIV is that it used to be an infectious disease, but now, with retroviral treatment, it’s considered a chronic disease. For the first time, people living with the virus are aging.

These people have a type of cognitive impairment referred to as HIV Associated Neurocognitive Disorder, but it’s different from the deterioration we see with Alzheimer’s. We have yet to analyze and characterize it at the genetic and proteomic level.

We’ve just written up a proposal and are waiting for funding to be approved in order to begin the study.

Casi todos los creadores se nutren de la megadiversidad de nuestra tierra. Entre ellos he querido elegir a varias figuras representativas de este despertar al reto estético al que llamamos Perú.

Until a few years ago, the boom in Peruvian cuisine monopolized the country’s reputation, but Peru’s brand is now increasingly associated with fashion, art, and design. All Peruvian artists are nourished by our country’s mega-diversity; here we highlight a few figures who represent this awakening to the aesthetic challenge we call Peru.

uando un territorio es la suma de compartimentos estancos, algo distinto ocurrirá en cada uno: un paisaje, una lengua, una etnia, un fruto, un ave, un tono de verde, una manera de hablar y una de vestir. Al viajar por Perú uno encuentra, en sus más remotas comunidades, rezagos de un legado antiguo que se manifiesta en múltiples formas; la tradición textil es una de ellas, igual que lo son la danza y la música. La manera de bordar, la iconografía, la combinación de formas y colores típicos de esa porción de tierra serán distintas a las de más abajo, arriba, al norte o al sur en nuestra topografía escalonada. Pero apenas hace algo más de un par de décadas podemos celebrar esa riqueza. Arrastramos, por mucho tiempo, una identidad que era más colonial que autóctona. Nada estaba más lejos del Perú que Lima. Era difícil mirar hacia adentro. Además, éramos víctimas de la violencia del terrorismo, de la hiperinflación, de la inestabilidad política y la corrupción. ¿Con qué ganas haríamos moda? ¿Con qué alegría celebraríamos el color de los Andes peruanos en una prenda?

Pero la comida vino a rescatarnos de la tristeza con sus picores antiguos, pescados vapuleados y cautivantes hierbas andinas. Una vez acabada la guerra interna, una vez que el pollo dejó de volar en los mercados y costó lo mismo día tras día, empezamos a reconocer que éramos el país de los miles de pisos ecológicos. Probamos la hoja de coca en el pisco sour y eso ya nos pareció un atrevimiento.

“El no ser uniformes nos hace ser especiales”, dice el diseñador Amaro Casanova, uno de los promotores de la moda peruana, quien explica que la cocina abrió las puertas del Perú, contribuyó a tomar en cuenta el aspecto comercial y a comprender a dónde vamos.

“Not being uniform makes us special,” says designer Amaro Casanova, a promoter of Peruvian fashion, who explains that cuisine opened Peru’s doors and helped us see the economic possibilities of our culture and understand where we are heading.

I

f a land is the sum of its separate parts, each one adds a different element: a landscape, a language, an ethnic group, a fruit, a bird, a shade of green, a way of speaking, or a way of dressing. When traveling through Peru’s most remote communities, one finds remnants of an ancient legacy that manifests itself in multiple ways, including a textile tradition, dance, and music. There are distinctive styles of embroidery. and iconography and diverse ways traditional shapes and colors combine in the landscape to make it different from what is to the north or the south in our terraced topography. Just a little over two decades ago we began celebrating this richness. For a long time, we were burdened by an identity that was more colonial than native and, back then, nowhere was further from being Peruvian than Lima. It was difficult to look within. We were also victims of the violence of terrorism, hyperinflation, political instability, and corruption. Where could we find inspiration to create fashion?

What joy could motivate us to celebrate the color of the Peruvian Andes in an article of clothing?

But our food rescued us from sadness with its ancient burning, its pounded fish and captivating Andean herbs. Once the internal war was over, once chicken stopped flying from the markets and started to cost the same day after day, we began to recognize that we were a country of thousands of ecological layers. We tried coco leaves in our pisco sour and this in itself seemed daring.

cuando preparamos nachos con nuestro maíz morado, se nos reveló el universo peruano: allí estaban esperándonos, también, junto con los sabores de esa nueva vieja patria, los colores, las texturas, las combinaciones, los bordados y, por supuesto, las materias primas mediante las cuales ese peruano de lejanos parajes se expresaba hace tanto. Sabe Dios qué tantas cosas pasaron por la mente, ya no de los cocineros sino de los diseñadores de moda, gráficos y orfebres, fotógrafos y arquitectos, escritores y poetas, y sinceramos la mirada al terruño.

Siempre existieron los pioneros, los visionarios. En el caso de la moda peruana, Olga Zaferson rescató el diseño étnico peruano e hizo un denodado trabajo en la recuperación de las técnicas tradicionales del telar de cintura.

Ester Ventura también debe ser considerada una de las primeras en plasmar y reinterpretar el Perú. Acerca de Ester y de tres figuras más dedicaré algunas líneas, aunque también es importante resaltar la importancia de otros creadores representativos, como Ani Álvarez Calderón, José Miguel Valdivia, Giuliana Testino, Susan Wagner y Lucía Cuba, esta última autora de diseños contestatarios, alternativos, con alto grado de contenido político.

Nuestra industria de la moda y el sector textil en general atraviesan por una serie de replanteamientos en cuanto a las exigencias, al impacto social y ecológico, y al comercio justo.

En eso está el Perú: madurando, constituyéndose, preparándose para el mundo, explica Casanova.

Our fashion industry and textile sector are constantly reinventing themselves to better meet the needs of consumer demand, social and ecological issues, and fair trade. This is where Peru finds itself: maturing, establishing itself, preparing for the world, Casanova explains.

nd when we prepared nachos with our purple corn, the Peruvian universe was revealed: there it was waiting for us, along with the flavors of this new old country, the colors, the textures, the combinations, the embroidery and, of course, the raw materials through which Peru expressed itself so long ago. God only knows how many things went through our minds, not just the cooks but the fashion and graphic designers and goldsmiths, photographers and architects, writers and poets, and we opened our eyes to our homeland.

Pioneers have always existed. In Peruvian fashion, Olga Zaferson rescued traditional Peruvian design and did valiant work recovering the traditional techniques of the backstrap loom. Ester Ventura is another one of the first to capture and reinterpret Peru. I will dedicate some lines to Ester and the other three designers, although it is also important to highlight the significance of many others, such as Ani Álvarez Calderón, José Miguel Valdivia, Guiliana Testino, Susan Wagner, and Lucía Cuba, who is known for her rebellious and highly political alternative designs.

Ester Ventura: el Perú es una joya Por medio de las piezas de Ester Ventura se puede viajar no solo en el tiempo y espacio peruanos, sino a la esencia misma de nuestro país. Suelos, materias primas, conceptos, vestigios precolombinos y coloniales están representados en sus joyas. Plumas de guacamaya, telares inspirados en el acervo, la iconografía y la técnica de culturas milenarias, restos de ceramios milenarios, conchas marinas, el mate que hasta hoy se burila en estas tierras, las alas de mariposas de nuestra Amazonia, piedras como el ópalo andino, semillas como el huayruro, huesos, totora o junco, y el preciosismo, debo resaltar, del trabajo en plata como alegoría del trabajo en hilos de algodón con que se tejieron las más primorosas gasas hace casi mil años. Ester fue una de las primeras que vio y comprendió que se podía rescatar, nunca imitando el pasado sino reinterpretándolo, el espíritu del Perú, el vínculo con el mar, las montañas, la tradición textil y el barro que los antiguos peruanos convirtieron en magníficos ceramios representativos. Ella llegó desde Argentina muy joven. No está de más decir que apenas tocó suelo peruano quedó profundamente enamorada de la cultura. Nunca más se fue y sigue creando, innovando y reinterpretando.

The country’s earth, raw materials, concepts, and preColumbian and colonial past are represented in her jewelry. Her designs include macaw feathers, weavings inspired by the iconography and techniques of a thousand-year-old culture, remains of ancient ceramics, seashells, the gourds that are still carved in these lands, the wings of butterflies from our Amazon, stones like Andean opal, seeds like huayruro, bones, and totora or reed. The precious silverwork is an allegory of the cotton threads with which the most exquisite gauze was woven almost a thousand years ago. But her designs also contain a contemporary dialogue between Peru, its ancestral culture, and its geographic richness.

Ester was one of the first who saw and understood that the spirit of Peru could be recovered. She never imitates the past, but instead reinterprets the sea, the mountains, the textile traditions, and the clay that the ancient Peruvians turned into magnificent symbolic ceramics. She came from Argentina at a very young age and it is no exaggeration to say that the moment she touched Peruvian soil she fell deeply in love with its culture. Meche Correa: color en los años negros Meche nació y creció en una casita humilde en el barrio popular de La Victoria. Se recuerda como una niña despierta, que tenía un ojo desprejuiciado para los objetos, a los que ofrecía segundas y terceras oportunidades. Meche despertaba a la vida a la vez que a la fantasía; su hogar fue su primer laboratorio. Esa creatividad, ansiosa de manifestarse, lejos de ser apagada, fue promovida y celebrada por su madre. Meche es parte de esa generación de peruanos que lo veíamos todo negro, pues el país vivía en conflictos sociales y políticos, crisis económica y terrorismo.

Cuando cumplió los veinte y estudiaba diseño de interiores, salió por primera vez de Lima al interior. Su destino: Huancayo.

Ella compara esa experiencia de llegar a Huancayo como cuando un huancaíno viene por primera vez a Lima. Ambos encontrarán algo que nunca en su vida imaginaron.

Varios días se quedó allá; fue al famoso domingo de feria, se volvió testigo del trueque (intercambio de productos), que aún se practica. No salía de su asombro al ver los colores y diseños que las mujeres lucían con tanta naturalidad en sus prendas y tocados.

Fue un flechazo directo a su corazón. Quiso seguir viajando, conociendo e invirtiendo en descubrir. En esos tiempos, pocos en Lima sabían lo que era un apu (espíritu de la montaña, en quechua), un pompón, un poncho, el porqué de ciertos colores en las polleras y cinturones, qué significaban las flores en los sombreros o qué es una lliclla.

Pero ¿qué es una lliclla? Es la pieza más simbólica de la vestimenta de la mujer andina.

Se trata de una tela rayada de colores en la que la madre envuelve a su bebé y lo carga en su espalda o regazo. La lliclla es la representación de la supervivencia, el tesón, la ternura, el amor y la tradición.

Meche Correa: Color in the Dark Years Meche was born and grew up in a humble house in the popular La Victoria neighborhood. She remembers herself as a very alert girl with an unprejudiced eye for objects. Meche awakened to life as well as to fantasy; her home was her first laboratory. This creativity, eager to manifest itself, was encouraged and celebrated by her mother. Meche is part of that generation of Peruvians who saw everything with pessimism because they grew up as the country was mired in social and political conflicts, economic crisis, and terrorism.

When she turned twenty she wanted to study interior design so she left Lima for the first time for the interior of the country. Her destination: Huancayo. She compared the experience of going to Huancayo to the experience of a person from Huancayo coming to Lima for the first time.

They both find something that they could never have imagined. She stayed there several days; it was the famous Sunday fair and she witnessed the trueque (exchange of products) that is still practiced there.

She couldn’t believe the colors and designs that the women wore so naturally in their clothing and headdresses. It was an arrow direct to her heart. She wanted to continue traveling, experiencing and investing in discovery. In those times, few in Lima could identify an apu (spirit of the mountain, in Quechua) or a pompom (poncho) or knew why certain colors are found in skirts and belts or what the flowers in hats signified or what an lliclla was.

But, what is a lliclla? It is an Andean woman’s most symbolic piece of clothing. It is a colorful striped fabric in which a mother wraps her baby and carries it on her back or lap. The lliclla represents survival, tenacity, tenderness, love, and tradition.

Meche creó una cartera que considera su más grande logro. La llamó Love Bag. En el momento en que ella lanzó esa pieza al mercado de la moda no existían carteras con telas andinas. Meche es consciente de haber creado una tendencia que se ha ido esparciendo hasta multiplicarse a gran escala. Hoy en cualquier mercado artesanal del Perú se encuentra la Love Bag. Lo peruano regresó al Perú profundo en clave contemporánea.

Ha pasado el tiempo y Meche se ha consolidado como un referente de la moda peruana. Hoy me muestra una organza de seda en la cual ha pintado los dibujos que siempre vimos en las puertas y costados de los retablos ayacuchanos. Es un chal, una estola. Es Meche y sus ganas de darle la vuelta a la realidad, de sacarle partido al arte popular muy a su manera.

he woman who arrives in Lima from the Andes can put on jeans and a pair of sneakers to go make a living, but the last thing she will stop using is her lliclla.

Meche designed a handbag, which she considers her greatest achievement.

She called it the Love Bag. When she launched this piece in the fashion market, there were no bags made of Andean fabrics.

Meche is conscious of having created a trend that has grown to the point of multiplying on a grand scale. Today in any handicraft market in Peru you can find the Love Bag. “Peruvianess” returned profoundly to Peru, on a contemporary note.

Time has passed and Meche has become an icon of Peruvian fashion.

Today she shows me silk organza on which she has painted the designs that we see on doors and the sides of Ayacucho altarpieces. It’s a shawl.

It’s Meche and her desire to turn reality around, to promote popular art with her very own style.

Mozhdeh Matin: las manos de los peruanos Mozhdeh es un caso especial: nació en Cajamarca, la ciudad más importante de la sierra norte peruana, en el seno de una familia iraní que llegó al Perú hace más de treinta años. Por medio de su marca MOZH MOZH trabaja con sus propias telas, hechas a mano por artesanos peruanos y conservando las técnicas que pasan de generación en generación, en lana de oveja y de alpaca, y en telares de algodón tan finos que parecieran tener, en su urdimbre, hilos de seda; telares que ella corta y en base a los cuales diseña y crea prendas de alta costura.

Mozhdeh representa la vanguardia; no solo sus prendas sino sus accesorios y la imagen de su marca se manifiestan con códigos de un lenguaje visual nuevo que no deja de ser rotundo, desenfadado y no hace concesiones. Su amor por el país que la vio nacer, las distintas referencias que aparecen en sus prendas de las comunidades y etnias de costa, sierra y selva peruanas, son el producto de los estrechos vínculos que esta joven ha forjado con artesanos peruanos que no necesariamente tienen en sus hijos y nietos a los que perpetuarán sus conocimientos y legado.

Mozhdeh Matin: Peruvian Hands Mozhdeh is a special case: she was born in Cajamarca, the most important city of the northern highlands of Peru, in the bosom of an Iranian family that arrived in the country more than thirty years ago. Through her brand MOZH MOZH, she works with her own fabrics, handmade by Peruvian artisans, conserving the techniques that pass from generation to generation. She works in lambswool and alpaca and in cotton from looms so fine that they seem to have silk threads in their warp; looms that she cuts and with which she designs and creates high fashion apparel.

Mozhdeh represents the vanguard; not only in her clothes but also in her accessories. The image of her brand is manifested in a new visual language that is resounding, relaxed, and unapologetic. Her love for the country where she was born appears in the distinct references that appear in her garments, which bear witness to the communities and ethnic groups of the Peruvian coasts, mountains, and jungles. Her designs are the product of the close ties that this young woman has forged with Peruvian artisans whose children or grandchildren may not necessarily be the ones who will perpetuate their knowledge and legacy.

Cuando conversábamos Sitka y yo, ambas de la misma edad, hablábamos de cómo ni siquiera nosotras crecimos en el boom de la gastronomía peruana; eso ocurrió cuando alcanzamos la adultez. Es más: sus padres tenían restaurantes en Lima, donde la comida que se servía era internacional. Ella conoció el mundo de la moda en Miami, cuando fue a vivir allá. A los dieciséis años regresó al Perú, como ella misma dice, con el bicho de la moda metido en el cuerpo. Para presentar su portafolio le aconsejaron que buscase el Perú como fuente de inspiración; debía presentar una colección para postular a la universidad.

La aceptaron en Rhode Island School of Design.

Fue entonces cuando se dio cuenta de que el Perú sorprendía, que había algo distinto que contar.

Sitka and I, both the same age, realized that we didn’t grow up in the Peruvian culinary boom; that happened when we reached adulthood.

Her parents had restaurants in Lima, where they served international food. She went to live in Miami and experienced the world of fashion. At sixteen, she returned to Peru, as she says, with the fashion bug.

To make her portfolio, she was advised to look to Peru as a source of inspiration; she had to present a collection to apply to university. She was accepted at the Rhode Island School of Design. It was then that she realized that Peru was full of surprises and that there was a new story to tell.

Ha buscado por diversos territorios, pero siempre regresa al Perú, a sus fibras naturales, a investigar qué cosas podemos hacer con las manos, qué texturas se pueden lograr en telas. lot has happened since then. She has searched different lands, but always returns to Peru and her natural fibers to discover what things we can make with our hands, what textures can be achieved in textiles. Lately, she is making fabrics for garments inspired by the straw weavings of the baskets made in different regions of Peru.

You can’t always detect Peru in her creations.

The country that inspired her is not always evident; the foreign public doesn’t need us to copy ethnic manifestations. You have to turn them around, she says, adding that this is the challenge. How do we deconstruct them, how do we make them ours, new, our own, unique?

Santiago es, sin duda, la ciudad de Suramérica más indicada para tener una aventura invernal, pues las pistas de esquí son excelentes y están apenas a unos minutos de la gran urbe.

Chile entré en avión atravesando la majestuosa cordillera de los Andes.

Desde las alturas, la inmensidad se hace visible y el cordón que nunca acaba me intimida desde la seguridad de mi ventanilla. No había puesto mis pies en tierra firme y ya el entorno en que está inmersa Santiago me había enamorado. Había venido a conocer sus picos nevados, así que, sin perder mucho tiempo, busqué la manera de acercarme a estas míticas montañas que tantas caras tienen a lo largo del continente, y muy pronto dejé atrás la ciudad.

La primera parada fue Farellones. Una villa de esquí a poco más de cincuenta kilómetros de la Plaza de Armas, centro de la ciudad capitalina o, como te lo pintan los chilenos, a cuarenta curvas de altura. La primera vez que me mencionaron las curvas por las que subiríamos a los 2.340

flew into Chile over the majestic Andes mountain range. The immensity is palpable from the heights and the infinite ribbon of mountains intimidates me from the safety of my window seat. I hadn’t even set foot on the ground and I was already in love with the natural environment cradling the city of Santiago. I had come to see the snowy peaks, so without further ado, I headed for the legendary mountains that show so many different faces along the length of the Americas. I soon left the city behind.

Our first stop was Farellones. This ski village lies some 31 miles —or as the Chileans would say, forty curves of altitude— from the Plaza de Armas in the heart of the Chilean capital. I first heard mention of the curves as we wended our way up at nearly 8,000 feet; I thought it was a reference to

Cuando ya empezaba a ver doble, unas casas de madera típicas de película surgieron de entre la nieve anunciando la llegada a la pequeña villa de esquí. Aunque en el sur del país algunos migrantes europeos, movidos por la nostalgia de sus queridos Alpes, ya disfrutaban de la nieve chilena en todo su esplendor, fue en 1937 cuando se construyeron las primeras estaciones de invierno en la zona de Santiago, precisamente aquí en Farellones.

something picturesque. However, by curve number 20, I began to see that I should have paid more attention to the warning. Sure that I was in good hands —with a driver very familiar with the route and an expert at driving on snow— I turned my attention to the landscape and counting backwards from forty as I enjoyed the whimsical play of white, black, and green on each curve.

Just as I was starting to see double, some superb wood houses appeared in the snow, presaging our arrival in the small ski village. Although European immigrants nostalgic for their beloved Alps enjoyed the snow in all its glory in the south of the country, it was not until 1937 that the first hostels were built in the Chilean Andes.

Eighty years ago, the curiosity and spirit of adventure of a few visitors paved the way to the Farellones mountains and fun in the snow.

Un poco aturdida por la subida y el abrumador paisaje, me bajo frente a la entrada del Parque los Farellones y tardo en entender mi realidad. El blanco profundo de la nieve brilla y refleja el sol del cielo perfectamente como si mil espejos reposaran en las montañas. Es casi imposible abrir los ojos sin lentes oscuros, no hay un soplo de viento y agradezco la suerte de haber subido en el mejor día posible.

A little disoriented from the ascent and the overpowering landscape, I get out at the entrance to Farellones Park and take a minute to adjust to my new reality. The pure white snow glistens and reflects the sun perfectly, as if the mountain were seeded with thousands of mirrors. It is nearly impossible to open your eyes without dark glasses. There is not the slightest hint of a breeze and I thank the fates for bringing me up here on the best possible day.

Jamás he sido buena en los deportes y casi no soporto el frío, por lo que decido recorrer con tranquilidad la calle entre los restaurantes y las tienditas que ofrecen ropa, lentes, trineos… todo lo necesario para disfrutar de un excelente día de invierno. En el camino, mi guía había contado que los brasileños son gran parte de la movida turística y que no dejan de sorprenderse al ver la nieve. A los pocos minutos lo compruebo al verlos formando una fila que se arma con rapidez para tomarse una foto con un muñeco de nieve.

El acento era claro y la felicidad en sus caras los delataba: el país del fútbol, el carnaval y la garota de Ipanema había, finalmente, llegado a la nieve.

Nuestra excursión continúa y a unos minutos y un par de curvas paramos en medio de la nada. Sin peligro aparente bajamos con una sola misión: cumplir lo que nos ha prometido Hollywood: ¡guerra de nieve! Los brasileños que me acompañan me llenan de energía y el miedo al frío desaparece.

I have never been good at sports and I can barely stand the cold, so I decide to stroll the street lined with restaurants and shops selling clothing, sunglasses, sleds, and everything you need for a great day of winter fun. Along the way, my guide told me that Brazilians form a significant part of the winter tourism wave, and they are invariably surprised by the sight of snow. I soon witness this when I see them lining up to take pictures with a snowman.

Their accent gives them away, as do their happy faces: the land of soccer, carnival, and the girl from Ipanema meets snow.

Our excursion continues and a few minutes and a couple of curves later, we stop in the middle of nowhere. There seems to be no danger, so we climb out, focused on the mission: getting what Hollywood promised us, in other words, a snowball fight! The Brazilians infuse me with energy and my fear of the cold disappears.

Sin entender lo que esto significa corremos a la montaña y ¡puf! caemos de cara contra un algodón helado en el que se nos hunden las piernas hasta las rodillas. Con cara de niños en juguetería se nos olvidan las reglas de comportamiento y el hecho de que debemos “actuar como adultos” y la nieve empieza a volar por todos lados. La humedad en mis botas deja de importarme y disfruto de los azules y blancos profundos que se forman a mi alrededor. Hay algo en la nieve que mueve el niño interior que llevamos todos; hay algo en ese frío intenso, en ese blanco nube, que nos hace reaccionar como nunca y disfrutar el estar mojados y fríos a miles de metros de altura. El día no alcanza y la guía nos llama a seguir el camino. Quiero tumbarme a sentir el sol en mis mejillas y no pararme más, pero no lo hago: los ángeles de nieve se com-

he guide tells us that the snow is fresh, meaning it is very soft. Without understanding what this means, we run to the mountain and —oops— we sink up to our knees and fall face first into the frozen fluff. Looking like kids let loose in a toy store, we toss aside all decorum and notions of “adult behavior” and snow begins to fly. The wetness in my boots ceases to bother me and I enjoy the deep blues and whites around me. There is something about snow that brings out the inner child in all of us. There is something about the intense cold and the white blanket that makes us see things differently and lets us enjoy being wet and cold at high altitudes. The time is far too short; the guide calls us back to continue on our way. I want to throw myself down, to lie here and feel the sun on my cheeks and

Toco esa mezcla de sal y algodón de azúcar y con la mano entumecida agradezco de nuevo estar aquí en este día tan blanco y a la vez tan soleado, y me dedico a la contemplación mientras cientos de expertos suben y bajan a gran velocidad por las pistas de esquí.

not get up again, but I don’t: it’s hard to make snow angels when you can’t see the ground and you have to lift your feet to knee height to walk. Besides, I don’t think I’ve lost enough of my fear of cold to give myself up completely to the snow.

The last stop is Valle Nevado, the highest point I will reach today. Located at nearly 10,000 feet, the town gives me lunch among the most sublime mountains I have ever seen. I want to take off my glove to feel this thing that has held me spellbound for so many hours. I touch that blend of crusty salt and soft cotton candy and, even though my hand is numb, I once again give thanks for being here on this white, sunny day. I spend some time watching hundreds of expert skiers flash down the ski runs.

he following day’s excursion begins as the city is still waking. Swaddled in five layers of clothing, we leave for Cajón del Maipo. Thirty-seven miles to the southeast lies San José de Maipo, a small community once inhabited by Chiquillanes, Incas, and Mapuches.

When the winds of independence blew after the Conquest, this small settlement played a big role in uniting armies from Argentina with those fighting on this side of the mountains.

The San José de Maipo of today remembers its history in a peaceful way ―handicrafts clearly evoking those who walked these streets long ago are offered in an open plaza. Not

Esta reserva artificial provee de agua potable a la ciudad de Santiago y sus alrededores. En el camino, el río Maipo nos acompaña casi apagado, pues su verdadera fuerza se ve en verano cuando su corriente es utilizada para los deportes acuáticos. El sol me vuelve a acompañar, mientras el paisaje brilla como si fuésemos cómplices y me estuviese dando todo para poder disfrutar de panoramas inesperados.

The first hostels in the Chilean Andes were built in 1937 and they owe much to the curiosity and adventurous spirit of those first few visitors who paved the way to the Farellones mountains.

This man-made lake provides drinking water to the city of Santiago and the surrounding areas. The Maipo River flows almost silently in the background during our journey; the current strengthens during the summer, when the river is used for water sports. The sun comes out again and the landscape glows as if we had agreed that it would go all out to allow me to enjoy these astonishing panoramas.

legamos a la entrada del embalse y lo que veo es una escena casi apocalíptica. Unas estructuras de cemento gigantes recuerdan un refugio de mineros mientras observamos el lugar donde nace el agua que se bebe en la ciudad.

Mis pies vuelven a tocar la nieve y siento de nuevo ese crujido que hacen las botas al romperla, ese “crac” como de cáscara de huevo que me trae a mi realidad. Hay gente por todos lados, decenas de idiomas, cámaras, coolers, comida y no entiendo muy bien qué sucede. Camino en fila siguiendo a un rebaño de humanos que, a medida que subimos, poco a poco va menguando. A los pocos minutos ya se ve el embalse: una laguna de agua turquesa embellece aún más el paisaje, si es que esto es posible. El panorama aturde.

e reach the entrance to the reservoir, where a rather apocalyptic sight awaits. Our guide tells us that the enormous concrete structures blocking the view are the remains of a miners’ hostel as we admire the birthplace of the water we drink in the city.

My feet touch snow again and, once more, I feel the crunch of my boots breaking the surface and hear the eggshell “crack” that brings me back to this reality. Everywhere there are people, dozens of languages, cameras, coolers, and food; I don’t quite know what’s happening. I fall in line behind a herd of humans, which disappears before I realize it. A few minutes later, I spot the reservoir, a turquoise lake that serves to enhance the landscape further, if that’s possible. The panorama stuns.

Estamos a dos horas de la ciudad y se siente como un mundo de distancia. Aun faltan dos horas más de caminata y el paisaje cada vez es más espectacular. Paso una curva marcada por la montaña, el viento desaparece y el agua se convierte en un espejo perfecto. Estoy perdida en una realidad donde ya no sé qué es arriba y qué es abajo.

We are only two hours from the city, but it feels like a world of difference. About two hours more walking takes us to an even more spectacular landscape. I round a curve framed by mountains; there are fewer and fewer people, the wind dies down, and the water is an unblemished mirror that pulls you into a reality where up and down mean little.

The altitude and the beauty take my breath away and the only thing I can do is breathe in this surreal landscape that surely sprang from the imagination of an artist whose name escapes me. The brushstrokes of thousands of shades of blue and white play with my senses. Faced with the grandeur of nature, we understand that we are mere visitors on this magnificent planet.

Antes de volver a la realidad, me salgo del camino, subo con un esfuerzo máximo el lado nevado de la montaña y me lanzo en la nieve.

I’m half an hour late for the return journey, so I hope that one of the picnicking families will invite me to join them for the rest of the day. Before heading back to reality, I step off the road and make the effort to climb up the mountainside, where I do indeed throw myself down in the snow.

They had emerged from the dirty summer fog and we had no idea who those hatchet-faced strangers were. Perhaps a young girl burning with fever had spotted them through the haze of her dreams. Faded beards, long brown hair, eyes hidden under broad-brimmed hats.

Distant rains and implacable sun had frayed their loose mouse-colored capes and the yellow prairie wind had etched their faces with creased smiles.

A horcajadas en sus cabalgaduras renegridas daban vueltas en círculo en el atrio empedrado, haciendo restallar sus látigos con zumbidos cortantes de abejorros. Permanecimos clavados como estacas a nuestros asientos e intercambiamos miradas temerosas ante la inminente embestida de los invasores.

Pastores de ovejas, gañanes y labriegos, nuestros puñales se enfriaban debajo de la almohada o yacían enterrados entre las reliquias de nuestros antepasados. Hacía ya más de un siglo que las guerras con los señores de las llanuras habían cesado.

Desde entonces nos ocupábamos en otros menesteres: bregábamos de sol a sol. La tierra negra y las escasas lluvias proveían nuestro alimento.

The thunder of hooves drew our attention to the door: there they were, swaying in the wind, wrapped in gray cloaks that fluttered like the flags of an army of avengers. Astride their dark mounts, they rode in circles in the cobblestone atrium, their whips humming like droning bees. We remained glued to our seats while exchanging fearful glances in the face of the invaders’ imminent attack.

We sheepherders, laborers, and farmers had left our knives gathering dust under our pillows or buried among the relics of our ancestors. More than a century had elapsed since the wars with the lords of the plains.

Since then, we attended to other tasks; we slogged through the days. The black soil and the scant rain provided our food.

os bastaba un puñado de avena, unas cuantas verduras y un pedazo de queso; y en las celebraciones de la muerte, nuestra mesa se veía enriquecida con carnes, almíbares y licores fuertes. Nuestras mujeres cargaban agua desde los manantiales, bordaban flores de oro en sus vestidos y tejían abrigos y cobijas de lana para calentarnos; y en nuestras casas de piedra no faltaban la leña, el café y la sal. A veces nos juntábamos para cantar, bailábamos sones de violín y nos emborrachábamos. Vivíamos en paz; y resolvíamos nuestros súbitos odios en silenciosos duelos a machete, en algún paraje solitario, a la caída del sol. Llamarnos cobardes hubiera sido una acusación vil, pues al mismo demonio habíamos expulsado de nuestro territorio. Sin embargo, el ataque de aquellos bandidos colosales nos tomó desprevenidos, y como mansos bueyes, encerrados en aquella fortaleza que alguna vez creímos inexpugnable, aguardábamos la acometida de los vengadores.

fistful of oats, a few vegetables, and a piece of cheese was enough for us. Our fare was augmented with meats, compotes, and strong liquor in honor of a death. The women carried water from the springs, embroidered flowers of gold on their dresses, and wove wool coats and blankets to keep us warm; there was sufficient firewood, coffee, and salt in our stone houses. Sometimes we gathered to sing, to dance to the fiddle, and to get drunk. We lived in peace; we resolved our flashes of hatred through silent machete duels in a solitary location at dusk. To call us cowards would have been a vile insult, since we had expelled the very devil himself from our lands. Nonetheless, the attack by those extraordinary bandits took us by surprise, and like tame oxen enclosed in a fortress we had thought impregnable, we awaited the avengers’ assault.

Y la bestia se incorpora, piafando y resoplando, tanteando el suelo con sus cascos como si quisiera asegurar sus recias pisadas antes de aventurarse en aquel terreno resbaladizo y traicionero. Luego, durante un breve instante, hombre y caballo se inmovilizan: recortados contra el marco luminoso de la puerta parecieran fundirse en el azul pizarra de la lejanía, y recuerdan algún monstruo legendario extraviado en la memoria y en los sueños. La visión se desvanece; y a una señal del primer jinete, los otros espolean sus cabalgaduras y se lanzan al asalto, resueltos e impetuosos, como si un viento poderoso los impulsara a girar en remolinos de luz que al avanzar pusieran en fuga a las tinieblas.

With a buzzard feather in his drab hat and his hair tied back with a blood-colored ribbon, the first horseman cleaves the parched air and crosses the threshold. The horse slips on the brick floor and drops onto bent forelegs. The horseman savagely pulls the reins and rakes the horse with his spurs.

The animal stands up, whimpers, and paws the ground with his hooves, as if testing his grip before venturing on that slippery, traitorous floor. Man and horse stand briefly silhouetted: against the square of light, they seem to blend into the slate blue of the distance, evoking some mythical monster lost in memory and dreams. The vision fades. At a signal from the first horseman, the others spur their mounts and launch the attack. They are intense and determined, as if a strong wind were propelling them into eddies of light that chased away the mist as they advanced.

as bestias se atropellan y se empujan por el centro de la nave. Entre los asistentes a la ceremonia interrumpida, que ya se creen víctimas de una falaz maquinación del enemigo, algunos levantan sus voces débiles y suplicantes. Otros, entre dientes, susurran una oración desesperada.

Los demás aguardan en silencio, rastreando en sus memorias el recuerdo imposible de algún hecho parecido, atribuyendo a sus pequeñas mezquindades la ira del cielo representada en aquella horda de bandidos que avanza profanando el suelo sagrado.

Voces, sollozos y silencios tejen una invisible muralla, que los jinetes van derribando con su altanera presencia y las bestias con el filo mellado de sus cascos.

Aunque no pasan de una docena, la ferocidad de sus rostros, sus raídos trajes de otro tiempo y los arreos insólitos de sus cabalgaduras, forman un conjunto siniestro, capaz de imponer el terror de un ejército.

No obstante, si alguien los hubiera observado sin temor, no habría visto jinetes vengadores sino pálidos espectros de antiguos pescadores o de reyes.

he beasts bump into each other and scuffle in the center of the nave. Already imagining themselves the victims of the enemy’s devious plot, some of the participants in the disrupted ceremony raise weak, pleading voices. Others mumble despairing prayers under their breaths.

The rest remain silent, scouring their minds for the engraved recollection of some similar event, attributing to their minor sins the wrath of the heavens as represented by that horde of bandits who had profaned sacred ground. Voices, sobs, and silence weave an invisible wall flattened by the horsemen’s haughty presence and the animals’ notched hooves. Although they number less than a dozen, their cruel faces, their tattered suits from an earlier era, and the unusual harnesses of their mounts make them a sinister group no less terrifying than an army. Nonetheless, if someone had been able to remove the prism of fear, they would have seen not avenging horsemen, but faint specters of old fishermen or kings.

Alguna vez nos habíamos sentido seguros en el interior de aquel recinto consagrado a un culto remoto, ininteligible casi siempre para nuestro entendimiento, ajeno por completo a nuestras preocupaciones terrenales. Tal vez sin proponérselo, los invasores habían develado nuestra debilidad. Y ahora cuando se detienen frente al altar, un cierto alivio se instala fugazmente en nuestros corazones, al menos recuperamos el aliento. Presentimos que aquellos extranjeros no han venido para hacernos daño. Sabemos, con extraña certeza, que no se quedarán entre nosotros. Y quisiéramos ignorar los propósitos de su dilatado viaje.

We had once felt safe inside that enclosure consecrated to an ancient religion, nearly always unintelligible to us, and completely detached from our earthly concerns. Perhaps without even trying, the invaders had revealed our weakness.

When they stopped in front of the altar, we enjoyed a brief respite from worry; at least we were able to catch our breaths.

We sensed that those strangers had not come to do us harm. We knew with a strange certainty that they had not come to stay. And we didn’t want to know why they were here.

The horseman with the black feather gets off his horse and walks confidently toward the altar. He moves forward, followed by the clanking of spurs and leaving dusty footprints in his wake.

obla ligeramente la rodilla y mueve los labios como si convocara las sílabas de un nombre secreto. Luego se voltea, y en una lengua desconocida, con voz potente pronuncia una frase breve y cortante que hace temblar a los otros jinetes en lo alto de sus cabalgaduras.

Los caballos se inquietan, y de las gargantas de los forasteros escapa un sordo clamor semejante al rugido de muchos leones.

El jinete nos vuelve la espalda y extiende sus brazos hacia el tabernáculo, colocado unos palmos arriba de la piedra negra. Abre la puertecita y con movimientos demorados extrae de aquel pequeño cofre incrustado en la pared la custodia de plata dorada, y la envuelve con delicadeza entre los pliegues de su capa.

Y mientras desanda el trayecto en dirección a su montura, vemos cómo su rostro resplandece.

Libres ya de temores, salimos al atrio y los vemos partir.

Capas y látigos al viento, cruzan el puente y como flechas negras se internan en los territorios de la luz. Regresan presurosos a sus dominios en la niebla o a alguna ensenada junto al mar. El alivio que nos proporciona su partida nos impide darnos cuenta de nuestro íntimo alborozo.

e climbs the steps and stops in front of the altar stone. He dips his knee slightly and moves his lips as if invoking the syllables of a secret name.

Then he turns around, and in a powerful voice curtly pronounces a few words in an unknown tongue, making the other horsemen tremble atop their mounts. The horses begin to fidget, and a muffled clamor like the roar of many lions escapes from the throats of the strangers.

The horseman turns his back on us, extends his arms toward the tabernacle, and rests his hands atop the black stone. He opens the little door and deliberately pulls the gold-plated silver monstrance out of the coffer embedded in the wall and carefully wraps it in the folds of his cape. We see how his face glows as he retraces his steps toward his mount.

No longer afraid, we come out into the atrium to watch them leave. Capes and whips flapping in the wind, they cross the bridge and, like black arrows, dart into the realms of light. They quickly return to their domains in the fog or to some cove near the sea. The relief afforded by their departure keeps us from realizing how exhilarated we feel deep down.

ientras tanto seguimos con la mirada aquella nube de polvo que se hace cada vez más diminuta e imprecisa con la lejanía. Y podemos imaginar el júbilo que inflama el corazón de los forasteros, el brillo de sus ojos y sus sonrisas relumbrantes de contento: pues, errantes desde los confines de los siglos, en aquella remota aldea de las montañas habían encontrado a su Señor.

eanwhile, we continue watching the cloud of dust as it shrinks and dissipates with the distance. We can imagine the joy warming the hearts of the strangers, their shining eyes, and their dazzlingly contented smiles; after wandering the confines of centuries, in that remote mountain village they found their Lord.

El tour parcial por el Canal de Panamá inicia en la entrada norte del Corte Culebra, llamado así porque sus curvas se asemejan a una culebra.

Panama Marine Adventures was established in 2003 to create and develop high quality leisure products for the tourism industry. In an effort to capitalize on the special relationship that Panama has with the oceans, the company started the Panama Canal Tours. The canal is one of Panama’s most important attractions and the tour is a perfect way to experience this unique engineering marvel.

The Panama Canal partial transit tour begins at the north end of the Gaillard Cut, where the Chagres River flows into the canal. The Gaillard Cut (also known as Culebra Cut because its curves resemble a snake) is one of the main points of interest for visitors because it was carved through the Continental Divide.

This section of the Canal is full of history and geological value.

Before reaching the Pedro Miguel Locks at the southern end of the Cut, visitors are able to view the Centennial Bridge, which crosses over the Canal. Next, the Pacific Queen enters Pedro Miguel Locks, which is one of the two sets of locks on the Pacific side. Here the vessel is lowered almost 30 feet in a single step. It then enters Miraflores Lake, which is a small artificial body of fresh water that separates Pedro Miguel from Miraflores Locks, the final set of locks before the Pacific Ocean. At Miraflores Locks, the vessel is lowered about 60 feet in two distinct steps.

Once in the Pacific Ocean, the tour passes under the Bridge of the Americas, and later, passengers can admire the Bay of Panama and Panama City’s fantastic skyline before disembarking at Flamenco Marina.

• Vista ropa y zapatos cómodos.

Rotaciones de tobillo / Ankle Circles Levante sus pies y gire sus tobillos en círculos. Haga cinco círculos rotando cada uno de sus pies en el sentido de las agujas del reloj y en el sentido contrario del mismo.

Raise your feet off the floor and rotate your ankles in a circular motion. Make five clockwise circles and five counterclockwise circles with each foot.

Levantamiento de pies / Foot Pumps Con sus talones en el suelo, levante los dedos de los pies lo más alto posible. Deténgalos en esa posición por unos segundos y luego bájelos al suelo. Keeping your heels on the floor, lift your toes upward. Hold for a few seconds and lower them to the floor. Then lift your heels while keeping your toes on the floor and hold for several seconds. Repeat five times.

While seated, keeping your arms in place, move your shoulders in a circle form front to back five times. Repeat in the opposite direction.

Estiramiento de rodillas a pecho / Knee to Chest Stretch At Copa Airlines, we work hard to get you to your destination safely and on time. We also want to make your travel experience a positive one. Long-distance travel, exciting as it may be, can also be tiring.

Following these tips can reduce the stress and fatigue that may occur with long-distance travel and combat the jet lag that may result from crossing time zones on your journey.

Tips for Healthy Travel: • Get a good night’s sleep and rest as much as possible during your flight.

• Try to stick to your normal sleep schedule as much as possible during your trip. You may find it refreshing to take short, thirty to forty minute naps as you adjust to a new time zone.

• Drink plenty of water and/or juice before and during your flight.

• Eat light meals during your flight, and limit or avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol.

• Don’t stay in one position for too long; perform the simple stretches shown on the right, and take short walks when possible.

• Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.
