e are pleased to announce that Copa Airlines is now the third airline in the world to sign the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP) —an initiative championed by UN Women and the UN Global Compact— that aims to foster a business culture based on equality, including gender equality, by guiding corporate processes such as hiring, compensation, professional development, and well-being.

Our commitment to these principles is reflected in concrete actions based on humanresource management policies and practices that are intended to continuously improve the overall well-being of all our co-workers.

This model and corporate culture entail regularly updating our code of ethics and refining our guidelines on equality, human trafficking, and sexual and other types of harassment at work. To this end, the Copa Escucha (Copa is Listening) channel is available to all our co-workers; all reports received will be analyzed in the light of strict compliance with the code of ethics. Áreas Protegidas Marinas Mucho más que protección

¿Qué hay de nuevo?

Las Áreas Protegidas Marinas (MPA) son lugares en el mar en donde la pesca está prohibida o significativamente reducida, con el objetivo de dejar restaurar las poblaciones de peces, especialmente las de importancia comercial. Según muestra un reciente estudio, muchas de estas áreas están logrando no solo que la cantidad de peces aumente, sino también que se restauren procesos ecológicos que permiten el mantenimiento de la vida en el mar y más beneficios para el ser humano. Sin embargo, el estudio también detectó que no todas las reservas marinas están funcionado de forma óptima y es de vital importancia saber por qué.

Al proteger a los peces de la pesca se protege a los grandes depredadores, los que, a su vez, al recobrar su población, tienen un efecto en toda la cadena alimenticia y en el balance entre la depredación y la herbivoría. Según el estudio, en las reservas menos eficientes las probabilidades de que la presa sea consumida por un depredador son de 1 a 1, mientras en las más eficientes es de 49 a 1, lo que permite restaurar una función crítica del ecosistema para mediar el flujo de energía y el ensamblaje de la comunidad.

What’s New? Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are places in the ocean where fishing is prohibited or significantly restricted, with the aim of allowing fish stocks to be restored, especially commercially important ones. According to a recent study, many of these areas are achieving not only an increase in the quantity of fish, but also the restoration of ecological processes that allow ocean life to be maintained and provide additional benefits for humans. However, the study also found that not all marine reserves are functioning optimally and it is vitally important to learn why.

How Do They Do It? Protecting fish also protects large predators and when their populations are restored, it affects the entire food chain, as well as the balance between predation and herbivory. According to the study, in the less efficient reserves, the chances of prey being consumed by a predator are 1 to 1, while in the most efficient ones they are 49 to 1, which allows the ecosystem to once again mediate the flow of energy and assemble the community.

¿Qué hay de nuevo?

Una dieta pobre en alimentos sanos sumada a dietas altas en sodio causó unos once millones de muertes en 2017, debido a diez millones de casos de enfermedades cardiovasculares, 913.000 de cáncer y unos 339.000 de diabetes tipo 2. Un estudio recientemente publicado confirmó que solo el 12% de la población mundial ingiere la cantidad recomendada de nueces y semillas (21 gramos diarios) mientras bebe diez veces más cantidad de bebidas azucaradas de lo recomendado. Esto y la deficiencia en el consumo de frutas y verduras permiten comprobar que una de cada cinco muertes en el mundo es ocasionada por una mala dieta. La mayoría de las muertes son ocasionadas por bajo consumo de granos integrales, frutas, vegetales, nueces y semillas, seguido de dietas altas en azúcares, sodio, grasas trans y carnes procesadas.

Tome nota Latinoamérica y el Caribe consumen las dosis recomendadas de legumbres. Colombia tiene uno de los más altos índices de consumo de frutas. China, Japón y Tailandia tienen los más altos consumos de sodio. Los países con menos riesgo de muerte debido a una mala dieta son Israel, Francia, España, Japón y Andorra; los de mayor riesgo son Uzbekistán, Afganistán, Islas Marshall, Papúa Nueva Guinea y Vanuatu.

Diets poor in healthy foods but high in sodium caused an estimated 11 million deaths in 2017, including 10 million cases of cardiovascular diseases, 913,000 cases of cancer, and about 339,000 cases of type 2 diabetes.

Take Note Latin America and the Caribbean consume the recommend doses of legumes. Colombia has one of the highest rates of fruit consumption. China, Japan, and Thailand have the highest consumption of sodium. The countries with lowest risk of death due to a bad diet are Israel, France, Spain, Japan, and Andorra; the most at risk are Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu.

Luego de diez años de excavaciones, realizadas por la Fundación El Caño bajo la tutela de la arqueóloga Julia Mayo, y de un año de adecuación del museo del sitio, el pasado 12 de abril abrió las puertas este museo que brinda una mirada científica a la vida y muerte de los primeros pobladores de Coclé, su estructura social, costumbres funerarias y cosmovisión.

he magnificent pre-Columbian artifacts found at the El Caño archeological site in Natá, in the province of Coclé, Panama can finally be viewed by the public.

This milestone comes after ten years of excavations, carried out by the El Caño Foundation under the tutelage of the archeologist Julia Mayo, and a year of remodeling the site’s museum. On April 12, the museum opened its doors to offer visitors a scientific look at the life and death of the first settlers of Coclé, including insights into their social structure, funerary customs, and world view.

The festival returns in 2019 with an enticing program that offers attendees the opportunity to explore Central American identity, tell stories, and question reality without renouncing utopia.

ove is a labyrinth. Doris Romera and Claudio Levi would agree. They are a living, breathing example. They met as youngsters in the south of the south, near the icy lakes of Patagonia on a night of the full moon. While camping in the woods, they found themselves on the threshold of their first kiss, embraced by the fire and the stars that blanketed the night sky. Suddenly, Claudio’s facial expression changed.

“Before anything else happens, you should know something,” he said. She was surprised by his serious demeanor, but she waited. Bioy Casares used to say that you should never ask what you’ll find out anyway.

Los antropólogos no han podido ponerse de acuerdo sobre cuándo surgieron ni quién los inventó.

Se dice que hay atisbos de ellos en la Edad de Bronce y que acompañaron desde entonces el desarrollo de la humanidad. Fueron construidos en todas las culturas y en distintos lugares del mundo, en muchos casos al mismo tiempo. Algunos tenían objetivos espirituales o lúdicos, otros pretendían encerrar allí espíritus malignos o incluso también servían para escapar de ellos.

Anthropologists have not been able to agree on the origins of labyrinths or the identity of their inventor. It is said that traces of labyrinths date from the Bronze Age and that they developed alongside humanity. Labyrinths were built by all cultures and in various places around the world, often during the same period.

Some labyrinths were designed with spiritual or festive purposes in mind. Others were intended to combat malign spirits by trapping the spirits inside the maze or providing people with an escape from them.

The labyrinth’s webpage notes: “The labyrinth is a symbol of the spiritual world, a representation of the alternative paths and crossroads we encounter in life. Visiting, traversing, and inhabiting it is an exhilarating experience and an invitation to self-knowledge.”

Anthropologists have not been able to agree on the origin of labyrinths or the identity of their inventor, but they speculate that labyrinths may have emerged during the Bronze Age.

El Laberinto Patagonia, el sueño consumado de Doris y Claudio, se encuentra en la provincia argentina de Chubut en el sur del mundo, más precisamente, en el valle del río Epuyén, en la localidad de El Hoyo, en el camino hacia la desembocadura del río.

The Patagonia Labyrinth, a dream fulfilled for Doris and Claudio, is located in the Argentinean province of Chubut at the bottom of the world, or more precisely, in the Epuyén River valley near the town of El Hoyo, on the road to the river estuary.

Lo cierto es que una vez consolidada la relación de pareja, enfocaron sus esfuerzos en cumplir el proyecto de Claudio que, poco a poco, también se transformó en la ilusión de Doris. Consiguieron la tierra y lentamente comenzaron la tarea. Jamás pensaron en abrirlo al público ni en convertirlo en una de las atracciones más requeridas de la Patagonia argentina. Solo querían hacerlo. Mientras diseñaban el recorrido, tuvieron que preparar el terreno, limpiarlo, aplanarlo, dejarlo apto.

Once the pair had established their relationship, they focused their efforts on gradually bringing Claudio’s project to life, and it became Doris’s dream too. They obtained the land and slowly began the task. They never thought about opening the labyrinth to the public or turning it into a mustsee attraction in Argentinean Patagonia. They just wanted to do it. As they designed the route, they had to prepare the land, clear it, level it, and render it suitable for this use.

“En realidad es como si el laberinto hubiese estado siempre allí, esperándome a mí y a mi destino”, asegura. “Lo que recuerdo son las emociones y sensaciones que me fueron atravesando durante aquellos tiempos de concepción: incluso el año que, desalentado por el esfuerzo, intenté abandonar el proyecto, pero el laberinto no me dejó; se impuso, y pudo más”.

“Actually, it is as if the labyrinth had always been there, waiting for me and my destiny,” he claims. “What I remember are the emotions and feelings I experienced during its conception, even the year when I was so discouraged that I tried to abandon the project. But the labyrinth wouldn’t let go of me; it insisted and it was stronger than I was.”

hen came the most difficult part: the shrubs. “We obtained the Cupressus (cypress) seedlings in bunches with exposed roots. During the first year, we had to ‘nurse’ them in one kilogram pots and then transplant them to larger pots.” While waiting for the shrubs to grow, they ruminated on the labyrinth’s final form. Levi speaks of sleepless nights spent drawing maps and intensely studying the Kabbalah, history, sacred geometry, mythology, philosophy, and magic.

Alejandro Chaskielberg es un fotógrafo argentino de reconocimiento mundial. Ganador del premio Sony, viaja por el mundo realizando series de fotografías nocturnas. Al laberinto llegó de casualidad, como turista. “Fue un encuentro casual. Llegué con mi hija y quedé fascinado. Es un microuniverso fuera del tiempo.

Pedí permiso para fotografiar a mi hija durmiendo dentro del laberinto y así conocí a Claudio y a Doris. Más adelante me contactaron para hacer este libro en colaboración”. Laberinto Patagonia es un libro de editorial India que se encuentra girando por el mundo en diversas exposiciones.

The Book Alejandro Chaskielberg is a globally renowned Argentinean photographer. Winner of the Sony Award, he travels the world composing series of nocturnal photographs. He came upon the labyrinth by chance.

“It was a chance encounter. I came with my daughter and was fascinated. It is a micro-universe outside of time. I asked permission to photograph my daughter inside the labyrinth and that’s how I met Claudio and Doris.

Later they contacted me to collaborate on this book.” Patagonia Labyrinth (India Publishers) is being presented around in the world at various exhibits.

asta que llegó el momento que tanto esperaban. Llevar las plantas a la tierra y darle forma al laberinto. Lo diseñaron en papel, luego en una cartulina y finalmente lo dibujaron en el terreno, con hilo y cal; sin conocimientos matemáticos y empujados a todo vapor por el deseo.

El proceso llevó varios meses, pero lejos estaban de terminar. Llegaron los días de la espera, de ver crecer los arbustos, podarlos, regarlos hasta notar con el tiempo que el laberinto, por sí mismo, tomaba forma hasta que finalmente se convertía en un organismo vivo.

Solían meditar en sus patios interiores, recorrerlo por las noches e invitaron amigos. Era un patio de juegos familiar; más que eso, un espacio espiritual que les trajo paz y regocijo… Hasta que las escuelas de la zona se interesaron y pidieron visitarlo. Los niños les contaron a sus padres y también quisieron visitarlo. Y así, lentamente y sin querer, comenzó a crecer el mito de los locos del laberinto. Y se decidieron a abrirlo al público.

Construyeron un bar con vistas preciosas al laberinto y a la montaña y finalmente, en 2014, se lanzaron al turismo. El éxito fue instantáneo.

he long-awaited moment finally arrived.

They planted the shrubs and shaped the labyrinth. They traced it on paper, then on cardboard, and finally on the ground, using string and lime; they had no mathematical knowledge, merely a strong passion.

This process took several months, but they were far from finished. There were days of waiting, of watching the shrubs grow, pruning them, and watering them until the labyrinth took on its own form to finally became a living organism.

They used to meditate in the inner patios and traverse the maze at night; they invited friends.

It was a family playground, but more than that, a spiritual space that brought peace and joy.

One day, local schools took an interest and requested permission to visit. The children told their parents, who also wanted to visit. Gradually and unintentionally, the legend of the loonies of the labyrinth began to spread. They decided to open the labyrinth to the public.

They built a café with lovely views of the labyrinth and the mountains, and they opened it to tourists in 2014. It was an instant success.

l predio de cinco hectáreas, que contiene casi 8.000 metros cuadrados de pasillos y patios interiores, es un inmenso campo verde rodeado de montañas monumentales. A pocos kilómetros se encuentra el lago Epuyén, alucinante espejo de agua rodeado de montañas nevadas, donde se puede navegar en verano y los valientes pueden zambullirse, aunque las aguas son de deshielo.

El marco natural es inmejorable, pero lo que más llama la atención de Laberinto Patagonia es el silencio. Los visitantes que llegan a los gritos, con niños corriendo y en plan turístico lentamente ingresan en una especie de trance, como si algo muy antiguo despertara en ellos el cosmos dormido que son.

Todos saben que se trata de un juego, que nadie se va a perder, que ningún monstruo terminará por devorarlos; sin embargo, ingresan a paso lento con cierto grado de temor, de imprevisibilidad.

he lot covers some 12,000 acres and includes around 86,000 square feet of paths and inner patios; it is an immense green field surrounded by giant mountains. A few miles away is Lake Epuyén, a wondrous sheet of water ringed by snowy mountains; visitors can sail the lake in the summer and brave souls can take a dip in the snow-melt waters.

While the natural setting is incomparable, the most striking aspect of the Patagonia Labyrinth is the silence. Visitors, including overexcited children, may arrive here in loud, full tourist mode, but everyone slowly slips into a sort of trance, as if something very ancient had awakened the dormant cosmos of self.

Even though everyone knows it’s all a game that no one will get lost and no monster will devour them, they still enter warily, feeling a touch of fear and uncertainty.

The labyrinth sits 86 miles from El Bolsón, 11 miles from Lago Puelo, and 94 miles from Esquel. It is located at kilometer 3.7 on the road to El Desemboque - El Hoyo in the province of Chubut.

It generally takes about an hour to traverse the labyrinth. We won’t give you any hints about paths that end in dead ends or doors that open or close along the way, complicating the route. There are always people who take a lot longer. They might stop in the inner patios to connect with some sort of millenary energy that can be reclaimed only here. In the afternoons, Doris and Claudio once again traverse the dream fulfilled, but now imbued with so much life.

En noviembre de 2018, la cultura congo de Panamá fue reconocida como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la Unesco. Sus rituales, bailes y fiestas, practicados principalmente en Costa Arriba y Costa Abajo de Colón, celebran la vida cotidiana y la libertad, esa que es posible tras siglos de resistencia.

In November 2018, UNESCO recognized the Congo culture of Panama as part of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The Congo rituals, dances, and festivities, practiced mainly on Colón’s Costa Arriba and Costa Abajo, celebrate everyday life and the freedom made possible by centuries of resistance.

Nearly forty villages or communities in the districts of Santa Isabel, Portobelo, Colón, Chagres, and Donoso, all in Colón province, keep the Congo rituals and festivities alive, with regional variations. There are also Congos in places like La Chorrera in the province of Panamá Oeste, Chepo, Chilibre, and Curundú in the province of Panama, and Bocas del Toro, northwest of the nation’s capital.

El “juego congo” o “Tiempo de Soto” empieza el 20 de enero, día de San Sebastián, y se extiende hasta el Miércoles de Ceniza. En este período se instalan palenques en los que se baila para recordar a los antepasados esclavizados, burlarse del amo español o contar episodios de la cotidianidad.

El palenque es presidido por una Reina.

Los personajes del juego congo incluyen a una Reina y a un Rey, a Pajarito (el traidor del palenque), Mamá Guarda, el sacerdote, las ánimas, el Matuanga y los diablos, entre otros.

The “Congo game” or “Tiempo de Soto” begins on January 20, San Sebastián Day, and extends through Ash Wednesday. During this period, “palenques” are set up in which dances are staged to commemorate enslaved ancestors, make fun of the Spanish masters, or tell stories of everyday life. The palenque is presided over by a Queen.

The characters in the Congo game include a Queen and a King, Pajarito, or Bird (the traitor in the palenque), Mama Guarda, the priest, the spirits, the Matuanga, and the devils, among others.

El Miércoles de Ceniza, los diablos salen a atormentar a los congos, pero son atrapados y entregados al sacerdote, quien los bautiza. On Ash Wednesday, the devils venture out to torment the Congos, but are caught and handed over to the priest, who baptizes them. This represents the struggle between good and evil as well as the struggle between the pleasures of the flesh (carnival celebrations) and the beginning of Holy Week.

Las festividades y rituales congos se transmiten oralmente y sirven como integradores sociales y medios de expresión de las comunidades congos. Por estas razones, la cultura congo fue admitida como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad.

The Congo festivities and rituals, transmitted orally, are a means of cultural expression that integrate the Congo communities.

For these reasons, the Congo culture was designated part of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Research by American anthropologist Sheila Walker documents Congo culture in countries like Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. In all of these countries, the “Congo game� is linked to the ancient Kingdom of Kongo in Africa, which existed from the 14th to the 19th century. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the Kongo state maintained an extensive commercial network and its inhabitants traded copper objects, raffia cloth, and ceramics.

Structural Racism in the Americas Se calcula que en Latinoamérica viven unos 130 millones de afrodescendientes que, gracias al trabajo organizativo y de resistencia, están logrando mayor visibilidad y reconocimiento. ¿El objetivo? Lograr políticas públicas específicas para revertir las consecuencias del racismo estructural.

It is estimated that around 130 million people of African descent live in Latin America. Through organization and resistance, they are achieving greater visibility and recognition.

The objective? To bring about specific public policies to reverse the consequences of structural racism.

obreza, desamparo estatal, menor acceso a la salud y a la educación y mayores tasas de desempleo forman parte de la realidad que enfrenta hoy la población afrodescendiente de América Latina, producto de un racismo estructural heredado desde la Colonia.

According to the ECLAC, this situation affects approximately 22% of the population of Latin America: about 130 million people, descendants of more than 12 million Africans who were brought to America and enslaved between 1500 and 1867. These populations still face depravations and difficulties that the “white” population does not suffer and these conditions are aggravated by “their invisibility and the denial of their existence” in some countries in the region.

Pero frente a este panorama desalentador, la CEPAL también resalta los avances: la resistencia histórica, por ejemplo, que ha hecho posible no solo la conservación de la cultura y la formación de conciencia, sino también la estructuración de grupos y organizaciones de afrodescendientes que trabajan para impulsar el reconocimiento, el diseño de políticas públicas específicas y la incorporación de la variable identitaria en los censos, entre otros temas.

But in the face of this discouraging panorama, the ECLAC also highlights the progress that has been made. Historical resistance, for example, has facilitated cultural preservation and awareness raising as well as the structuring of groups and organizations of people of African descent who work to promote recognition, specific public policies, and the incorporation of the identity variable in censuses, among other topics.

Como se lee en el informe “Situación de las personas afrodescendientes en América Latina y desafíos de políticas para la garantía de sus derechos”, en las últimas décadas “los países han avanzado, aunque en distintos grados, en la creación de marcos normativos e institucionales para el combate de la discriminación racial, así como en la realización de acciones afirmativas y la aplicación de políticas de inclusión”, y se espera que el Decenio Internacional para los Afrodescendientes 2015-2024 contribuya a darles mayor visibilidad tanto en los temas de autoidentificación como en la efectiva consecución de derechos.

A report titled, “Situation of People of African Descent in Latin America and Policy Challenges for the Guarantee of their Rights” states that, in recent decades, “countries have advanced, although to varying degrees, the creation of normative and institutional frameworks for combating racial discrimination, as well as in the realization of affirmative actions and the application of inclusion policies.”

The International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) is expected to contribute by giving Afro-descendants greater visibility, both in the areas of selfidentification and securing rights.

Si bien los hay en todos los países —o, al menos, eso sugiere la historia y varias prácticas culturales— hay algunos en donde su presencia es evidente —en Brasil o en Cuba, por ejemplo, donde representan el 50% y el 36% de la población, respectivamente—, mientras que en otros apenas empiezan a manifestarse de forma visible como grupo étnico o tribal.

Está México, por ejemplo, país al que se vincula de forma cotidiana con su población indígena, pero en el que existe también una importante población negra en el sector de Costa Chica, en el estado de Guerrero. O Chile donde, según el dirigente Cristian Báez, de la Organización Lumbanga, la población afrochilena fue víctima de “un proceso de ‘chilenización’ o ‘blanqueamiento’” que los mantuvo invisibilizados durante mucho tiempo.

Where are they?

Cuando se habla de población afrodescendiente se piensa en países como Colombia, Brasil, Cuba o Panamá, pero también existe en México, Chile y Argentina.

El autorreconocimiento y el trabajo organizado de las comunidades negras están logrando una mayor visibilización de su presencia, problemas y herencias.

Afro-descendants exist in all countries, as history and several cultural practices suggest, but in places such as Brazil and Cuba, where they represent 50% and 36% of the population respectively, their presence is more evident. In other countries, however, they are just beginning to gain recognition as an ethnic or tribal group.

This is true of México, for example, a country with strong ties to its indigenous population, but that also boasts a significant black population along the Costa Chica in the state of Guerrero. When we speak of people of African descent, we think of countries like Colombia, Brazil, Cuba, or Panama, but there are also populations in México, Chile, and Argentina.

Self-recognition and organizational work in black communities are helping to make their presence, problems, and traditions more visible.

Su dispersión geográfica, por otro lado, está vinculada con procesos históricos y presiones migratorias. ut people of African descent are also very present in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama, countries in which they represent 7% to 10% of the population, and in Perú, where black populations equal approximately half a million people.

Their geographic dispersion is linked to historical processes and migratory pressures. In Colombia, black ancestral territories are on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, as well as in the Cauca Valley, but the armed conflict has forced many people to migrate to cities such as Medellín or even Bogotá. The black Garifuna populations along the Atlantic coasts of Nicaragua, Belize, and Honduras are the descendants of people from the islands of Jamaica, San Vicente, and the Grenadines, who were used as slave labor on cocoa, sugar, and banana plantations. In Honduras, English or Antillean blacks also populate the Atlantic coast, as happens in Costa Rica (the Limón area) and in the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Colón, in Panama.

En Chile están concentrados en el nor norte del país, en la región de Arica y Parinacota, limítrofes con Perú y Bolivia, porque esas zonas fueron punto estratégico para el comercio de la plata que se extraía en las minas de Potosí (Bolivia), durante la Colonia. Tal como explica Báez, de Lumbanga, la presencia africana en Chile es centenaria, pero solo el 7 de marzo pasado fue aprobada la Ley de Reconocimiento del Pueblo Tribal Afrodescendiente, luego de que, en el año 2000, empezaran “un proceso de incidencia, junto con la ayuda de organizaciones afrodescendientes de Perú, Bolivia, Uruguay y Argentina, para lograr dos objetivos grandes: una ley de reconocimiento y la inclusión dentro de las estadísticas, en los censos”.

In Chile, black populations are concentrated in the northern Arica and Parinacota region, bordering Perú and Bolivia, given the area’s strategic importance to the trading of silver extracted in the Potosi mines (Bolivia) during the colonial years. As Báez from the Lumbanga organization explains, the African presence in Chile is at least 100 years old. Only recently, however, on March 7, 2019, was the Law of Recognition of AfroDescendant Tribal People passed, following an advocacy process begun in 2000, which, “together with the help of organizations of African descent in Perú, Bolivia, Uruguay and Argentina, [worked] to achieve two main objectives: a law of recognition, and inclusion in statistics, in censuses.”

It is not only a matter of self-identification, though that is in itself important: selfidentification serves to disaggregate data that, in turn, can be used as a foundation for demanding and developing public policies that meet the specific needs of the Afro population. “Differentiated statistical data are important because they seek actions in benefit of our communities,” said Yimene Calderón, executive director of the Organization for Ethnic Community Development (ODECO) of Honduras.

And, as John Jairo Blandón Mena of the Process of Black Communities of Colombia (PCN) pointed out, the statistical data help to make visible and appropriate spaces that have been historically, socially, politically, and culturally denied.

The migration of people of African descent continues: groups of Africans are now appearing in Central America on their way to the United States from South America. There has been a strong Haitian migration to Chile in recent years.

n la Declaración Universal sobre la Diversidad Cultural, aprobada por la UNESCO en 2001, los Estados miembros se comprometen a reconocer la diversidad cultural como componente del patrimonio común de la humanidad y promover una cultura de paz y diálogo entre culturas. Con el fin de concientizar a la humanidad al respecto, se declara el 21 de mayo como el Día Mundial de la Diversidad Cultural para el Diálogo y el Desarrollo. Más que la simple constatación de la diversidad, se pretende un genuino reconocimiento de los beneficios del pluralismo cultural, entendido como un principio ético y político de respeto igualitario de las identidades y tradiciones culturales.

n the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, adopted by UNESCO in 2001, Member States commit to recognizing cultural diversity as a component of the common heritage of humanity and promoting a culture of peace and dialogue between cultures. In order to raise awareness of these issues among all people, May 21 was declared World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. More than a simple confirmation of diversity, the event seeks to genuinely recognize the benefits of cultural pluralism, understood as an ethical and political principle of equal respect for cultural identities and traditions.

En la historia de la humanidad “no ha existido un único modelo de sociedad”, dice Diana Gómez Correal, doctora en Antropología y profesora asistente del Centro de Estudios Interdisciplinarios del Desarrollo (CIDER), de la Universidad los Andes en Bogotá. La diversidad es un hecho; existe y debe existir. Pero además debe ser celebrada. Por ello, afirma, el diálogo entre culturas nos posibilita abrir nuestros imaginarios y reflexionar sobre las diferentes formas en que las sociedades se organizan en esferas como la economía, la política, el medio ambiente, el territorio, la vida cotidiana, la relación con la tierra y con otros colectivos sociales.

In the history of humanity “there has been no single model of society,” says Diana Gómez Correal, PhD in Anthropology and Assistant Professor at the Center for Interdisciplinary Development Studies (CIDER), at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá. Diversity is a fact; it exists and it must exist. But it must also be celebrated. Therefore, she affirms, the dialogue between cultures allows us to broaden our ideas and reflect on the different ways in which societies organize themselves in areas such as economics, politics, the environment, territory, daily life, and our relationship to the land and other social groups.

El informe mundial de la UNESCO, publicado en 2010, dice que invertir en la diversidad cultural y el diálogo intercultural es promover el proceso de receptividad mutua entre los pueblos. Las diferencias, lejos de ser una amenaza, pueden beneficiar la acción de la comunidad internacional. La diversidad contribuye a la solidaridad intelectual y moral de la humanidad, que lucha contra la intolerancia, los prejuicios y la ignorancia, ayudando a cimentar la paz.

The UNESCO World Report, published in 2010, states that an investment in cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue promotes processes of mutual receptivity among peoples. Differences, far from being a threat, can complement the actions of the international community. Diversity contributes to the intellectual and moral solidarity of humanity, which fights intolerance, prejudice, and ignorance, helping to cement peace.

El diálogo en América Latina Según Diana Gómez, se pueden tipificar cuatro actitudes históricas frente al diálogo cultural. La primera es la eliminación de toda diferencia mediante la imposición de un estilo de vida, como sucedió en la época de la Conquista. La segunda es la asimilación: las minorías se acoplan al estilo dominante, perdiendo toda su riqueza e identidad cultural. La tercera es el multiculturalismo: reconoce la diferencia entre sociedades, pero con políticas muy limitadas. La última es la interculturalidad, que significa tanto el diálogo entre visiones diversas de sociedades como el reconocimiento mutuo.

Esta última permite que las minorías consideradas diferentes puedan sobrevivir y permanecer en el tiempo sin discriminación, con oportunidades de contribuir desde sus miradas a aportar cultural, social y económicamente a la sociedad mayoritaria.

El diálogo intercultural avanza en el ámbito local y esto es esperanzador. La delegación de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas, por ejemplo, condenó cualquier acción prejuiciosa contra los árabes. Esto permitió avanzar en los diálogos entre comunidades judías, musulmanas y católicas para desalentar las manifestaciones de extremismo y fanatismo.

También se han desarrollado diálogos entre la sociedad mayoritaria y las comunidades indígenas y afrodescendientes y así se han mejorado las constituciones de Bolivia, Perú y Ecuador. El respeto por las cosmovisiones de los pueblos originarios ha permitido que en estos países la Tierra y la naturaleza sean reconocidas como sujetos de derechos, lo cual es un ejemplo para el mundo.

Dialogue in Latin America According to Diana Gómez, historical cultural dialogue can be characterized by four attitudes. First, the elimination of all differences through the imposition of a lifestyle, as during the Conquest. Second, assimilation, whereby minorities conform to the dominant culture, giving up their cultural richness and identity.

The third attitude is multiculturalism, which recognizes the differences between societies, but offers very limited policies. And, finally, interculturalism, which ensures both dialogue between different visions of societies and mutual recognition. This allows minorities to survive over time, free from discrimination, with opportunities to contribute culturally, socially, and economically, from their own perspectives, to the dominant society.

Intercultural dialogue advances at the local level, which is encouraging. A delegation from Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas, for example, condemned all prejudicial actions against Arabs. This allowed dialogues between Jewish, Muslim, and Catholic communities to advance, discouraging manifestations of extremism and fanaticism.

Dialogues have also taken place between majority societies and indigenous and Afrodescendant communities, thus improving the constitutions of Bolivia, Perú, and Ecuador.

Respect for the cosmovisions of indigenous peoples has allowed these countries to recognize the Earth and Nature as subjects with rights, setting an example for the rest of the world.

In some cases, reforms have conditioned the redistribution of land and other social benefits to a dominant indigenous language. In Colombia, multiethnic and cultural dialogue advances, although with many difficulties. In Perú, Bolivia, Chile, Guatemala, and Panama, intercultural dialogues have led to public health services being cooperatively administered with indigenous peoples, recognizing their methods of prevention, healing practices, and traditional medicines.

The challenge is to convince decision makers, politicians, and local social actors to integrate the principles of cultural diversity and the values of pluralism and multiculturalism into government plans and public policies as an essential dimension of dialogue, sustainable development, the effective exercise of freedom, and the strengthening of social cohesion, peace, and democratic governance.

Inter-culturalism involves experiencing other cultures and allowing other cultures and their truths to affect, change, and transform us, shifting not only our answers, but our questions, ideals, and myths. Cultural dialogue is born of reflection in the presence of others and inside ourselves.

Con su mezcla de soul, guaracha, soca, calypso y típico, los combos nacionales marcaron una época en el escenario musical panameño hasta que, a principios de 1980, fueron tragados por la fuerza del reggae.

The Beachers, sin embargo, el combo que nació en la provincia de Bocas del Toro, permanece y consigue, más de medio siglo después, encender al Baco y al Eros que todos tenemos.

With their mixture of soul, guaracha, soca, calypso, and folk music, the “national combos” marked an era on the Panamanian musical scene until, in the early 1980s, they were swallowed up by the power of reggae. And yet The Beachers, a combo from the Bocas del Toro province, have remained and, more than half a century later they continue to delight the Baco and Eros in all of us.

En octubre de 2017 apareció The Beachers Cincuenta, una producción con diez temas y varios artistas invitados, para conmemorar sus cincuenta años.

E

se miércoles 25 de octubre de 2017, el Teatro Amador estaba a reventar. No cabía un cuerpo más, pero la gente seguía llegando porque todos sabían que esa sería una gran noche: el naitafon (night of fun) de los cincuenta años que The Beachers, uno de los grupos representantes de la época de los combos nacionales de Panamá, había organizado para lanzar su último disco.

Entre la multitud, vestido con pantalón negro y camisa dashiki, el director del grupo, Lloyd Gallimore, caminaba saludando, sonriendo y dejándose tomar fotos. Llegado el momento subió al escenario y le dijo al público: “En diez días voy a cumplir 72 años, ¡pero aquí seguimos haciéndole un poquito de bulla!”.

The Beachers son, en palabras del historiador Mario García Hudson, “la agrupación de los combos nacionales más importante que ha existido en la historia de la música popular del país”, por el tiempo que se ha mantenido activa.

he Amador Theater was packed to bursting on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. Not a single additional body could be squeezed into the theater and yet people kept coming because everyone knew it was going to be great night: the 50th anniversary of The Beachers, one of the biggest bands from the days of Panama’s “national combo” scene, was being celebrated with the release of a new record.

Dressed in black pants and a dashiki shirt, bandleader Lloyd Gallimore walked through the crowd, waving, smiling, and letting people take his picture. When the time came, he went on stage and told the audience: “In ten days I’ll be 72 years old, and here we are, still making noise!”

According to Mario García Hudson, The Beachers are “the most important ‘national combo’ band in the history of the country’s popular music,” given the time the band has remained active.

A principios de los años 60, las estrellas del escenario panameño eran las grandes orquestas. Luego surgieron agrupaciones más pequeñas que, influenciadas por la música soul del sureste de Estados Unidos, del latin jazz de Nueva York, de la guaracha cubana y del típico panameño, se impusieron en el mercado con un repertorio que integraba estas tendencias con el calypso y la soca, dos ritmos de fuerte presencia en Colón, Panamá y Bocas del Toro, provincias donde hubo inmigración antillana a mediados del siglo XIX y principios del XX. The Beachers fueron uno más de esos grupos y nacieron de la forma más casual.

Gallimore no tenía forma de saberlo entonces, pero la llamada que recibió una tarde de Dennis Joshia, ministro de la Iglesia episcopal de Changuinola, le daría un giro a su vida y a la de varios amigos que, como él, tocaban la conga, el ukelele y la quijada por diversión.

In the early 1960s, large orchestras were the stars of Panamanian stages. Later, smaller groups influenced by soul music from the southeastern United States, Latin jazz from New York, Cuban guaracha, and Panamanian folk music took over the market with repertoires that incorporated these styles as well as calypso and soca –two rhythms with a strong presence in Colon, Panama, and Bocas del Toro, provinces that had absorbed Antillean immigrants in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries.

In October 2017, The Beachers Cincuenta –an album that included ten songs and several guest artists– was released to commemorate the band’s 50th anniversary.

One of these groups was The Beachers, a band that came about almost by accident.

Gallimore had no way of knowing it then, but the call he received one afternoon from Dennis Joshia, minister of the Episcopal Church of Changuinola, was about to change his life, and the lives of several friends who, like him, played congas, ukulele, and the Jew’s harp for fun.

Lloyd Gallimore nació en Bocas del Toro, al noroccidente del país, cuando la United Fruit Company era la dueña de un imperio bananero que, desde finales del siglo XIX, se extendía por varios países de América.

Lloyd Gallimore was born in Bocas del Toro, in northwestern Panama, at a time when the United Fruit Company ran a banana empire that, since the late 19th century, had stretched into several countries in the Americas.

Descendiente de negros que llegaron a Bocas desde Martinica y Jamaica, Gallimore pasó su infancia en Changuinola, en medio de la dinámica que impuso la “mamita yunait”. La Chiriquí Land —subsidiaria de la United— no solo cosechaba, empacaba y exportaba el banano que sembraban miles de trabajadores, sino que había hecho en Changuinola un “minigobierno”. Allí se conseguían los puestos de trabajo y los salarios dependiendo del color de piel, y los grupos —latinos, negros, indígenas y estadounidenses— se mantenían aparte uno del otro: había barrios residenciales separados —para ejecutivos y para trabajadores— y también clubes sociales distintos.

A descendant of blacks who came to Bocas from Martinique and Jamaica, Gallimore spent his childhood in Changuinola, in the heart of the dynamics imposed by the “mamita yunait.” Chiriqui Land, a subsidiary of United Fruit, not only harvested, packed, and exported the bananas planted by thousands of workers, but had also established a “mini-government” in Changuinola. Jobs and salaries were distributed depending on skin color and the different groups –Latinos, Blacks, Indians, and Americans– remained segregated, with separate residential neighborhoods for executives and workers, and different social clubs as well.

La United contrataba a grandes orquestas y músicos para diversión de los altos ejecutivos.

“Por eso allá a Changuinola llegó Benny Moré y La Sonora Matancera”, recuerda Gallimore.

Como a él le gustaba la música desde niño, una vez se escapó de casa para escuchar a hurtadillas a uno de esos grupos del club para ejecutivos, pero un vecino lo vio y se lo contó a su padre. “Mi papá me dio una rejera por eso. Me dijo que no tenía derecho a estar en ese lugar”.

The “United” hired large orchestras and musicians to entertain its top executives.

“That’s how Benny Moré and La Sonora Matancera came to play in Changuinola,” recalls Gallimore. A music lover since he was a child, Gallimore once snuck out to listen to one of those bands playing for the executives, but a neighbor saw him and told his father. “My dad gave me a real whipping. He told me I had no right to go there.”

The Birth

Gallimore tuvo que dejar Bocas para obtener su bachillerato y luego ingresó a la Universidad de Panamá, en la capital. Pero al terminar el primer semestre, su padre lo mandó a buscar porque necesitaba ayuda. En Changuinola lo esperaba un empleo en la Chiriquí Land y un puesto, como pianista, en una orquesta.

Gallimore had to leave Bocas to obtain his baccalaureate and went on to the University of Panama, in the capital. But at the end of his first semester, his father sent for him because he needed help. There was a job waiting for him in Changuinola, at Chiriqui Land, and a position as a pianist in an orchestra.

The Beachers en Plaza Catedral.

Algunos de los miembros de The Beachers han fallecido y otros se han retirado o hecho su vida en otras tierras.

Se trata de Frank Sergeant, Chino Williams, Guillermo Francis, Cardial Earlington y Eugene Chambers.

E

n esas estaba cuando lo llamó el ministro Joshia. La orquesta que tenía años de tocar en el evento social de la iglesia se iba para Costa Rica, porque habían conseguido un mejor contrato, y el evento local se quedaba sin músicos. Gallimore, que era un miembro nuevo, Chino Williams, el cantante, y el conguero decidieron no viajar y ayudar con la fiesta parroquial.

“El Chino me dice que tiene un amigo en Almirante que toca la batería; yo llamo a mi amigo, el Sargento Buggy, que tocaba la guitarra. Reunimos a seis personas y empezamos a ensayar”.

El sábado, a las ocho de la noche, con instrumentos de cuarta y un piano de ochocientas libras que cargaron entre varios, el grupo empezó a tocar. Al terminar la primera pieza hubo un silencio de funeral. Nerviosos comenzaron a interpretar la segunda pieza. Entonces el padre, para romper el hielo, sacó a una dama a bailar y ¡se formó el julepe!

uch was his situation when he got the call from Minister Joshia. The orchestra that had been playing at the church social for years had gone off to Costa Rica, where they’d landed a better contract, and the local event was left without musicians. Gallimore, who was new, “Chino” Williams, the singer, and the conguero decided to stay behind and help with the parish party. “Chino said he had a friend in Admiral who played the drums, and I called my friend, Sergeant Buggy, who played the guitar. The six of us got together and started rehearsing.”

The Saturday night of the event, at eight o’clock in the evening, with cheap instruments and an 800-pound piano carried in by several people, the group began to play. At the end of their first tune a funereal hush fell over the room. They nervously began to play their second piece.

Then, to break the ice, the minister invited a lady to dance and the party was off and running!

“¿Sabe a qué hora terminamos? ¡A las 3:40 de la madrugada! ¡Y nos pagaron cuarenta dólares!”, cuenta, mientras se ríe a carcajadas. Creyente de la congregación bautista, Gallimore piensa que aquel favor que hicieron marcó la vida artística del grupo y por eso le gusta decir que los cincuenta años de carrera han sido un cúmulo de “diosidencias”.

“You know what time we finished? At 3:40 in the morning! And they paid us forty dollars!” he adds, laughing loudly. A member of the Baptist congregation, Gallimore believes that this first favor marked the band’s artistic career and he likes to say that their 50 years of success have been a succession of “Godsends.”

The Beach Boys —como decidieron llamarse— comenzaron a tocar en isla Colón, la cabecera de la provincia, hasta que un día fueron contratados para la Feria de Bocas del Toro. Allí estaban cuando Pete Romero, que hacía de maestro de ceremonias y era entonces una estrella de televisión, mostró interés en ellos.

The Beach Boys –as they decided to call themselves– began playing on Isla Colon, the capital of the province. Then, one day they were hired for the Bocas del Toro Fair. It was here that Pete Romero, master of ceremonies and a television star at the time, showed an interest in them.

“Ya llevábamos como dos horas tocando cuando nos dice: ‘Oye, yo quiero cantar con ustedes’…

Y el hombre quedó encantado”. Hoy Romero lo confirma: “No necesité ni diez minutos para darme cuenta que ahí había un gran descubrimiento musical, tenían un sonido propio”. Eso sí: Romero les sugirió cambiarse el nombre porque en Estados Unidos ya existía una banda con la misma denominación. Fue así como nacieron The Beachers.

“We’d been playing for about two hours when he said: ‘Hey, I want to sing with you...’ and he was sold!” Romero now confirms the story: “It took less than 10 minutes to realize that this was a great musical discovery; they had a sound all their own.” Just one thing: Romero suggested they change their name, because there was already a band in the U.S. with the same name.

That’s how The Beachers were born.

Several members of The Beachers have passed away and others have retired or moved to other countries, but some remain: Frank Sergeant, “Chino” Williams, William Francis, Cardinal Earlington, and Eugene Chambers.

Los nuevos y no tan nuevos: Hiram Arjona (saxofón alto), Ernesto Belgrave (batería y timbales), Carlos Yayo Hernández (bajo y coros), Roger Orcasitas (saxofón tenor) y Jermaine Vásquez (cantante).

Gracias a sus contactos lograron una cita con Santiago García, dueño de Loyola Records.

Los recibió en su estudio sin mucho entusiasmo. “Abrió la puerta y dijo: toquen lo que quieran”, cuenta Gallimore. Nada más empezar, la reacción de García fue inmediata: “¡Vamos a grabar!”.

Buscando qué interpretar, Feliciano Larry Earlington sugirió un tema que había armado hacía poco: “El estiloso”. El resultado final fue “África caliente”, un tema símbolo que sigue emocionando cuando a las congas que inician se unen el bajo, los sonidos de animales y el teclado. La pieza, que transpira africanidad, fue un boom. Como explica García Hudson, se vendieron más de 60.000 copias en una época en la que un disco de 45 revoluciones costaba un dólar. The Beachers terminaron encandilados, con una popularidad rimbombante que compartían con otros combos como Los Excelentes, Los Shelters y Los Mozambiques.

Un golpe trágico El 18 de marzo de 1975, el grupo viajaba rumbo a la Feria de David, cuando la fatalidad los alcanzó. Mientras comían en Santiago, un amigo policía saludó a Frank Sergeant, el Sargento Buggy, y lo invitó a irse con él en moto hasta David. Dice Gallimore que el grupo le pidió a Buggy que siguiera con ellos, pero el amigo policía insistió. El Sargento Buggy se montó a la moto y la siguiente vez que lo vieron yacía en el fondo de un barranco. Aquello los golpeó durísimo.

“Estuvimos parados como dos meses y el bajón duró como un año”, recuerda Gallimore.

The Beachers sobrevivió a la tragedia, pero la competencia con otros géneros musicales siguió dándoles batalla: primero fueron los otros combos, luego el reggae en español.

Stardom The encounter with Romero was providential. Thanks to his contacts, they were given an appointment with Santiago García, owner of Loyola Records. He gave them a lukewarm welcome at his studio. “He opened the door and said, play whatever you want,” recalls Gallimore. When they began to play, Garcia’s reaction was immediate: “Let’s start recording!”

As they decided which song to play, Feliciano “Larry” Earlington suggested a tune he’d put together recently: “El estiloso” (“Stylish Man”). The final result was “África caliente,” one of the band’s theme songs that continues to thrill with its bass congas, animals sounds, and keyboard riff. The track, dripping with Africana, was a hit. García Hudson recalls the more than 60,000 copies sold at a time when a 45-rpm record cost one dollar. The Beachers were on fire, with an amazing popularity shared with other combos such as Los Excelentes, Los Shelters, and Los Mozambiques.

Tragedy Strikes

On March 18, 1975, as the group traveled to the David Fair, misfortune reared its ugly head. While having a bite to eat in Santiago, a police officer and friend of Frank Sergeant –Sergeant Buggy– offered to give Buggy a lift to David on his motorcycle. Gallimore says the group urged Buggy to continue on with them, but the police officer insisted. Sergeant Buggy got on the motorcycle and the next time they saw him was at the bottom of a ravine. The band was hit hard. “We stopped playing for about two months and our slump lasted for almost a year,” recalls Gallimore.

Más tarde, el reguetón, el vallenato y la bachata. Las presentaciones nunca cesaron, pero la popularidad del grupo se limitaba, en los últimos años, a un underground muy particular.

Así estaban cuando el músico Billy Herron, productor de Folk Lab Studio, se interesó en ellos. “Los había escuchado, pero no le había puesto atención a su música”, confiesa. Las cosas cambiaron a partir de Transístmico Project, un trabajo en el que Herron incorporó el teclado de Gallimore. De las largas conversaciones entre ambos salió la idea de un disco nuevo.

Ese miércoles 25 de octubre fue una gran noche: nada más interpretar “El toro y la luna”, el público cantó a todo pulmón: “Ese toro enamorado de la lunaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…”. Nada más arrancar con “El cojo y la muleta”, la gente empezó a dar brincos. Al escenario no solo subió este grupo, que lleva más de medio siglo cantando y tocando, sino también un personaje impecablemente vestido con traje, sombrero y zapatos black and white: Camilo Azuquita, agitando nostalgias con sus boleros.

The Beachers survived the tragedy, but they had to fight competition from other musical genres: first, from other “combos,” then from the wave of reggae in Spanish. Then came reggaeton, vallenato, and bachata. They never stopped playing live, but the group’s popularity has been limited in recent years to a very specialized underground fan base.

The oldest members of The Beachers are Marvin Sam Williams (backing vocals), Alberto Salas Salazar (backing vocals and bell), “Larry” Earlington (congas), and Lloyd Gallimore (bandleader and keyboards). New and not so new members include: Hiram Arjona (alto saxophone), Ernesto Belgrave (drums and timbales), Carlos “Yayo” Hernández (bass and vocals), Roger Orcasitas (tenor saxophone), and Jermaine Vásquez (lead vocals).

That is, until musician Billy Herron, a producer at Folk Lab Studio, became interested in them. “I’d heard of them, but hadn’t paid much attention to the music,” he confesses.

Things changed when Herron used Gallimore’s keyboards on the Transístmico Project. Out of the long conversations between the two men came the idea for a new album.

Wednesday, October 25 was a great night: as the band began to play “El toro y la luna,” the audience sang at the top of their lungs: “Ese toro enamorado de la lunaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…” (“that bull in love with the moon...”). And with the opening chords of “El cojo y la muleta” (“The Cripple and the Crutch”) people started jumping. Joining The Beachers, who have been singing and playing for more than half a century, was another artist, impeccably dressed in a suit, hat, and two-tone black and white shoes: Camilo Azuquita, with his nostalgic boleros.

La potente presencia en este espacio de Olinda Silvano y sus compañeras Silvia Ricopa y Wilma Mayas, del colectivo Madres Artesanas, hace parte de un diálogo horizontal entre los saberes ancestrales y el mundo de hoy.

equeña. Ágil. Concentrada. Apenas un suspiro (que es lo que significa Reshijabe, su nombre en el lenguaje de los shipibo-konibos, tribu amazónica de Perú). Pero también fuerte y decidida. “El mundo entero está cubierto por diseños”, dice una canción de su cultura y ahora Olinda Silvano (su nombre occidental) tiene el reto de llenar con ellos una superficie desnuda. Aunque esta suele ser una tela, una cerámica o un trozo de madera, esta vez es un muro extenso. Ella ya los ha enfrentado en ciudades como Lima o Moscú. Hoy está en Madrid, antes de ir a Valencia y a Londres.

Entona entonces un canto ritual y mueve su pincel. Vuela. El muro empieza a ser marcado sin titubeos por líneas que no tienen la rigidez y horizontalidad de los textiles aymarás o quechuas, por ejemplo.

mall. Nimble. Focused. Barely a whisper (the meaning of Reshijabe, her name in the language of the Shipibo-konibos, an Amazonian tribe in Perú). But also strong and determined. “The whole world is full of designs,” says a song from her culture, and now Olinda Silvano (her Western name) faces the challenge of covering a bare surface with designs. The surface is usually fabric, pottery, or wood, but this time it is an expansive wall. She has already faced such canvases in cities like Lima and Moscow. Today she is in Madrid, before continuing on to Valencia and London.

She sings a ritual song and lays down a brushstroke. She flies. The wall begins to bloom with strong lines that lack the rigidity and horizontality characteristic of Aymará or Quechua fabrics.

Curious passersby who stop to watch see only a tiny woman with shining black hair, a woman wrapped in many colors, wearing necklaces and sporting designs on her face. They see a woman who carefully and calmly draws across yards of urban wall. From where they stand and with their cultural precepts, they do not see the crown of power placed on her head by her grandfather when she was a little girl. They cannot sense the piripiri, that Amazon plant that opened her eyes and made her a different child.

Her geometry is organic, clear, and dynamic. Sometimes it fans outward, sometimes it narrows inward. Sometimes it contracts, sometimes it expands. The colors grow out of a palette that is cheerful and intense, but still controlled. She does not improvise: although there is no pre-determined outline, she fluidly develops a complex storyline of space and time.

They do not see the visions unfolding under Olinda’s eyelids, visions that she meticulously reproduces on the wall.

Nor do they recognize the mighty current of the Ucayali River, the father of the jungle and of Olinda’s drawing. They do not see the slithering muscular anaconda with its tattooed skin, the origin of all the designs and colors in the cosmos. Contrary to appearances, these lines are not merely aesthetic compositions like those that have taught us to appreciate modern abstract art. This is not a simple excursion into form on form. Nor is it a display of beauty for beauty’s sake.

Lo que Olinda dibuja es otra cosa para la que la palabra “mapa” también se quedaría corta. Ella está volviendo a tejer con su canto y su pincel el territorio que han creado durante siglos los pasos de su pueblo en el vientre de la intrincada Amazonia. Even the word “map” doesn’t begin to describe what Olinda is drawing. Her song and her brush contrive anew the territory created in the heart of intricate Amazonia by the passage of her people throughout the centuries. We should perhaps speak of the itinerary of the soaring flight of expanded consciousness and hypersensitivity induced by the sacred ayahuasca plant.

n sobrevuelo que deja apreciar, desde arriba y al tiempo, el surco creador del río, el camino del agua al sol, la vibración de los bosques, los picotazos de colores encendidos de los loros, monos, pájaros y peces, la convivencia de los seres reales y míticos. Y entre todas estas coordenadas, el lugar sobre la tierra, conectado con el cosmos, en el que se ha afincado su tribu. Olinda, la coronada, la de ojos abiertos, la de manos poderosas, la que conoce las claves profundas de los icaros (cantos sagrados) y el kené (los dibujos) realiza con su cuerpo y su voz la danza que plasma todo esto hoy en un rincón de Matadero de Madrid, como parte de la programación de Perú como país invitado de ARCO 2019.

No se trata de un asunto menor. Aquí los dibujos de Olinda han dejado los collares donde hablan en tono menor en la forma de las artesanías.

Tampoco se han congelado en los museos ni domesticado en los relatos de la antropología; al contrario, la elaboración de este mural en uno de los centros más dinámicos de arte contemporáneo de Europa abre las puertas del presente al pensamiento visual indígena.

This is no small matter. These drawings of Olinda’s go beyond the supposedly simpler artisanry of jewelry without being stiff museum pieces or tame expressions of anthropological tales. Rather, the creation of this mural in one of the most dynamic European centers of contemporary art opens the door of the present to indigenous visual thought.

This new material broadened the spectrum of kené drawing, which was traditionally done with natural dyes. Olinda likes the acrylics because they are bright, cheerful, and lasting. For some time now, her public murals have enlivened not only the proverbial gray of Lima, but also the official history of the indigenous stamp on national identity; now the murals are making their way to other world capitals.

This new muralism is a reinvigorated and enriching experience, fully modern in the radical freedom and daring iconoclasticism that tears down barriers between languages, eras, and cultures, and between art and handicrafts, indigenous and Western cultures, ancestral and modern practices, and natural and urban environments. How could we not take pleasure in this whisper of the jungle in the big city?

Netflix’s culture, which The Wall Street Journal recently described as “encouraging harsh feedback,” is an example of the overriding belief that the way to increase performance is through frequent and often critical feedback.

The research on feedback is clear: Telling people what we think of their performance doesn’t help them thrive and telling people how we think they should improve actually hinders learning.

Underpinning the conviction that feedback is an unalloyed good are three theories that the business world commonly accepts as truths. The first is that other people are more aware than you are of your weaknesses, and that the best way to help you, therefore, is to show you what you cannot see for yourself. We can call this our theory of the source of truth.

Another of our collective theories is that feedback contains useful information and this information will accelerate someone’s learning. The research points in the opposite direction. Learning is less a function of adding something that isn’t there and more a process of recognizing and refining what is already present. There are two reasons for this.

But remember that when you do, you’re merely remediating — and that remediating not only inhibits learning but also gets you no closer to excellent performance. If you see somebody doing something that really works, stopping her and dissecting it with her is your highestpriority interrupt.

• Explore the Present, Past and Future: When people come to you asking for feedback on their performance or what they might need to fix to get promoted, try this: Start with the present. If a team member approaches you with a problem, he’s dealing with it now.

He’s feeling weak or challenged, and you have to address that.

ut rather than tackling the problem head-on, ask your colleague to tell you three things that are working for him right now. These things might be related to the situation or entirely separate. Getting him to think about specific things that are going well will help open him to new solutions.

Next, go to the past.

Ask him, “When you had a problem like this in the past, what did you do that worked?” It’s likely that he has encountered this problem before. On one of those occasions he will almost certainly have found some way forward.

Finally, turn to the future. Ask your team member, “What do you already know you need to do?” Offer up one of your own experiences to see if it might clarify his own.

But operate under the assumption that he already knows the solution — you’re just helping him recognize it.

Soy un privilegiado porque, a pesar de vivir cerca de la ciudad, puedo disfrutar de los placeres de oír y observar desde mi casa animales silvestres debido a la cercanía de un reducto de bosque. listen to the clay-colored thrush announce the beginning of the rainy season here in Panama. Even though I live near the city, the nearby swath of forest luckily allows me the pleasure of hearing and observing wild animals from my house. However, these groves so close to the city are a death trap for the wildlife I enjoy so much. Dozens of animals are run over on the highways that intersect the forest. The victims are often mothers whose young have not yet learned to fend for themselves in the forest, thus multiplying the tragedy.

In response, biologist Néstor Correa and his wife, administrator and specialist in the care of wild neonates, Yiscel Yangúez, founded the Panamanian Conservation Association (APPC). The couple and a group of colleagues are committed to rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife in Panama. Intent on paying them a visit, I leave early in the morning, traveling through the exuberant tropical jungle of Soberanía National Park toward the town of Gamboa at the junction of Lake Gatún and the Chagres River, in the heart of the Canal Zone.

A Second Chance

A mother sloth —with a baby clinging to her— fell on her head and died. George, a building supervisor who witnessed the event, put the baby in his car and took it to APPC. The baby is now one of the ambassadors.

It all began in 2006 with the expansion of the Canal. Néstor and Yiscel were hired by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) to rescue animals that would be affected by the works.

The magnitude of the work in the middle of the humid tropical jungle made it necessary to design a strategy that included monitoring before, during, and after tree felling. The idea was to find and relocate the largest possible number of animals. Working side-by-side with the ACP, some one hundred people collaborated in three shifts over 21 hours every day and rescued more than two thousand animals.

This work established wildlife rescue protocols in coordination with the ACP, the Ministry of the Environment, and the APPC.

os protocolos, la experiencia y la necesidad de rescatar animales atrapados entre el bosque y el rápido desarrollo urbanístico de Panamá continuaron después de la ampliación del canal. En 2014 el señor Herman Bern, dueño de la cadena hotelera Bern Hotels & Resorts, que incluye al Gamboa Rainforest Reserve, ofreció parte de sus instalaciones para continuar con el rescate de animales a cambio de dictar charlas informativas para los visitantes y huéspedes del resort. Los perezosos huérfanos, que no habían podido ser reintroducidos, se convirtieron en los protagonistas de esta nueva fase.

Rápidamente estas charlas se volvieron muy populares entre los turistas que visitaban Gamboa, con más de cien espectadores por sesión. Con tanto éxito, Néstor decidió dedicarse del todo a la organización APPC. En el 2017 Herman Bern Jr. hijo del señor Bern, llegó de Australia tras visitar un santuario de koalas con la idea de crear un santuario de perezosos en Gamboa.

he protocols, the experience, and the need to rescue animals trapped between the forest and Panama’s rapid urbanization remained relevant well after the canal expansion. In 2014, Mr. Herman Bern, owner of hotel chain Bern Hotels & Resorts, which includes the Gamboa Rainforest Reserve, offered part of his facilities for use in ongoing animal rescue in exchange for organizing informative talks for visitors and resort guests. The orphaned sloths that could not be reintroduced into the wild became the stars of this new phase.

The talks quickly became popular with tourists visiting Gamboa, attracting up to one hundred people per session. Given such success, Néstor decided to throw all his efforts into APPC. He tells us that the hotel suggested expanding the model from just talks to a visitor center —the first— featuring rescued sloths. In 2017, Herman Bern Jr., son of Mr. Bern, returned from a visit to a koala sanctuary in Australia with a plan to establish a sloth sanctuary in Gamboa.

Se realizaron las adecuaciones y se inauguró el santuario de perezosos. Hoy gracias a esta asociación entre el Gamboa Rainforest Reserve y la APPC, los rescatistas han podido seguir con su labor, pues el aporte del hotel a la Asociación, que se obtiene del cobro de la visita al Santuario, cubre el 50% de los gastos que genera el programa de rescate de fauna.

Los perezosos embajadores cumplen ahora una función: educan a los visitantes sobre la importancia de la conservación de la fauna.

Estos fueron rescatados muy pequeños y huérfanos, razón por la cual fueron criados por Yiscel y las especialistas de la APPC. Al no estar con sus madres biológicas, no aprendieron cómo sobrevivir en el bosque.

Son diez pequeños súper héroes, pues perdieron su vida en libertad por culpa del desarrollo humano, pero contribuyen a educar a la población y, al mismo tiempo, colectar el dinero necesario para ayudar a los animales que sí pueden ser liberados.

Suitable adaptations were made and the sloth sanctuary opened. This association between Gamboa Rainforest Reserve and the APPC has allowed the rescuers to continue their work. The hotel donates proceeds from the Sanctuary to the Association, covering 50% of the wildlife rescue program’s expenses.

The sanctuary is divided into two work areas: the sloth ambassadors zone and the recovery, rehabilitation, and release zone, where other species are also treated. The ambassador sloths were rescued as tiny orphans by Yiscel and the APPC’s other specialists. Because they were raised by humans rather than their mothers, the ambassador sloths never learned how to survive in the wild. They now play an important role in educating visitors about wildlife conservation.

Wakanda

El rescate Antes del acuerdo con el hotel recibían en promedio doscientos cincuenta animales al año; ahora, gracias al santuario y a la publicidad, el número casi se ha duplicado. Cuenta Néstor que llegan animales con patas o alas rotas que, tras ser tratados, tienen la oportunidad de ser reintroducidos con éxito en el bosque. El objetivo principal es reubicar a los animales en áreas donde no corran un nuevo peligro.

Lo más difícil es la reintroducción de crías. Hasta el santuario llegan de uno a dos animales por día, y en ocasiones uno suele ser una cría. Generalmente es la policía ecológica la que recibe el llamado de un ciudadano y hace la primera parte del rescate. El resto de la tarea: curarles sus heridas y prepararlos para el regreso a la vida silvestre se realiza en la APPC, ubicada en Gamboa.

Explica el especialista que, si un ciudadano encuentra una cría en apuros, lo más importante es mantenerla caliente y no darle nada de alimento. Se le pueden suministrar gotitas de electrolitos o Pedialyte y se debe entregar de inmediato a un centro de rescate o llamar a la policía ecológica, 314 9451, o escribir al whatsapp de la APPC, 6497 7223, para darle más posibilidades de sobrevivir. Néstor también enfatiza que si usted encuentra a una cría que llora, hay que dejarla llorar porque de este modo su madre puede escucharla y venir a recogerla. Hay que tener paciencia; la madre de un perezoso, por ejemplo, puede demorar en llegar por la velocidad de sus movimientos, pero es posible que esté viniendo en camino.

The Rescue Before the agreement with the hotel, the rescuers took in an average of two hundred fifty animals a year; now, thanks to the sanctuary and the publicity it has generated, the number has almost doubled. Néstor says that rescued animals with broken legs or wings can be treated and successfully reintroduced into the forest. The main goal is to relocate the animals to areas where they will be out of danger.

The most difficult task is reintroducing youngsters into the wild. The sanctuary takes in one or two babies per day. Since the environmental police are generally the first to get calls about animals, they carry out the first phase of the rescue. The rest of the work —treating the animals’ injuries and preparing them to return to a life in the wild— is performed by the APPC in Gamboa.

Tapir

La madre de la tapir fue cazada y comida en el Darién cuando la cría tenía apenas dos meses. El tapir bairdii o centroamericana es una especie muy amenazada: quedan menos de cinco mil entre Panamá y México.

The mother of a tapir was hunted and eaten in Darién when her baby was barely two months old. The Bairdii or Central American tapir is highly endangered - there are fewer than five thousand in Panama and México.

The specialist explains that if you happen upon a young animal in trouble, the most important thing is to keep it warm and not feed it. To increase the animal’s chances of survival, you can give the animal a few drops of electrolytes (such as Pedialyte) and immediately take the animal to a rescue center or call the environmental police 314 9451 or write a whatsapp to 6497 7223. Néstor also stresses that if you find a baby that is “crying,” you need to let it cry, since this alerts the mother to come for her baby. You need to be patient; the mother of a sloth, for example, might take a good while to get there, but she could well be on the way. If we pick up the baby animal, it might feel comforted and stop crying, but its mother will never find it again. If there is really no sign of the mother, we can pick the baby up, keep it warm, and take it to a wildlife rescue center.

os animales que llegan desorientados al centro y con heridas mínimas se pueden reubicar en períodos de 24 a 72 horas. Los más graves son trasladados a cirugía, al Centro Veterinario Panamá con el doctor Julio Reyes, luego pasan a rehabilitación, se les pone a hacer ejercicio y se les reubica con una marca. El costo de la rehabilitación de un animal es muy alto; por ejemplo, si llega un águila con un ala rota, primero se debe realizar la cirugía del ala, luego se le debe habilitar una recinto lo suficientemente grande para que pueda ejercitarse, de unos tres metros de alto y una superficie 25 a 35 m2 como mínimo.

Un recinto grande de entre 50 a 100 m2 puede llegar a costar de 2.500 a 5.000 dólares. Luego de la liberación pueden ser reutilizadas para otros animales.

Por estas instalaciones han pasado tucanes, zarigüeyas, gavilanes, gallinazos, hormigueros, capibaras, búhos, monos tití, monos araña, olingos, tapires, monos aulladores, gavilanes crestados, cara caras cabeza amarilla, ñeques y muchos más, siendo los más rescatados los perezosos de dos y tres dedos, búhos, zarigüeyas, ardillas y hormigueros.

Los mamíferos más atropellados en carretera son hormigueros y perezosos. El hormiguero porque, cuando ve la luz de los autos, se para en dos patas para tratar de defenderse y el perezoso porque es muy lento. Las rapaces juveniles y adultas son un poco más fáciles de reubicar, siempre que puedan cazar su alimento y vuelen bien.

nimals that come to the center suffering from no more than minor injuries and confusion can be relocated within 24 to 72 hours. More seriously injured animals are sent for surgery at the Panama Veterinary Center with Dr. Julio Reyes, and then to rehabilitation; they are allowed to exercise and are tagged before being relocated. The cost of rehabilitating an animal is very high; for example, and eagle with a broken wing must first have surgery, and then it will need an enclosure large enough to accommodate flight during its recovery.

These cages can be 10 feet high and measure a minimum of 270-370 square feet. One large enclosure (538-1076 square feet) can cost $2,000-$5,000, but they can be reused once an animal is released.

These facilities have housed toucans, opossums, hawks, turkey vultures, anteaters, capybaras, owls, titi monkeys, spider monkeys, olingos, tapirs, howler monkeys, crested goshawks, yellow-headed caracaras, agoutis, and many more, with the most frequent guests being two- and three-toed sloths, owls, opossums, squirrels, and anteaters. The mammals most often run over on the roads are anteaters and sloths: the anteater tends to stand up on two feet to defend itself when it spots car lights, and the sloth is simply slow. The easiest animals to relocate are the raptors, as long as they can hunt their food and fly well.

A tropical tawny owl fell out its nest. After molting its juvenile feathers, the bird will be transferred to a larger enclosure where it will live for a week, then it will be allowed to fly free.

curious and only recently-documented phenomenon is that of substitute mothers for caracaras and turkey vultures. Néstor and his team noticed this with a caracara chick in an outdoor enclosure. A female caracara in the forest was seen observing the chick intently. The team decided to release the bird and leave food for it near the house. When the female approached the food, the team thought she had come to steal it, but she was in fact feeding the chick. The same thing happened with the turkey vultures: the chicks are feed by adult turkey vultures who come in from the forest.

The Enclosures

Los recintos Parte de la oferta de alojamiento del Gamboa Rainforest Reserve consistía en una serie de casas de madera de la época canalera. Las casas, cuyo mantenimiento resultaba muy costoso, tenían además muy poca demanda. El hotel decidió concederlas a estos animalitos para convertirlas en los recintos de recuperación. Los cuartos —de 12 a 14 m2 con altura de 2,30 metros— permiten adecuar espacios para las aves donde puedan saltar, volar y moverse. Precisamente hoy están terminando de preparar un cuarto para una aguililla adornada y pude presenciar el momento en que esta hermosa ave, operada de un ala rota, fue trasladada a su nuevo recinto. Allí se ejercitará por un tiempo, para luego ser reinsertada a su hábitat natural.

Part of Gamboa’s Rainforest Reserve lodgings consisted of a series of wood houses dating to the Canal period. The houses were very costly to maintain and not much in demand. The hotel decided the houses could be put to better use as recovery facilities for the animals. The rooms —130 to 150 square feet and 7.5 feet high— are large enough for enclosures that allow the birds to jump, fly , and move around. A room is being prepared right now for an ornate hawkeagle, and I witness this lovely bird with a broken wing being transferred to its new home. There it will exercise for a time, then it will be reintroduced into its natural habitat.

Perezoso A un perezoso que se lastimó una pata al caer de un árbol por estar peleando, le pusieron un tornillo para unirle el hueso y ahora está en rehabilitación. Ya sale a hacer ejercicio y pronto le quitarán el clavo. Tan pronto esté listo, él mismo encontrará la cuerda que lo saca del recinto rumbo a la libertad. Será otro de los muchos finales felices que día a día se presentan en el santuario.

Sloth

A sloth that hurt its foot by falling from a tree during a fight had a screw inserted into the bone and the animal is now in rehabilitation. It can already exercise and the screw will soon be removed. As soon as it is ready, it can follow the rope to freedom outside the enclosure. This will be another of the many happy endings that play out in the sanctuary day after day.

tro de los nuevos recintos fue construido gracias a donaciones del Ron Magill Conservation Endowment (Zoológico de Miami) y del Fondo de Conservación SeaWorld - Busch Gardens. Es el recinto exterior para perezosos, con este nuevo hábitat, la APPC espera poder colocar allí a las crías que ya tienen de seis a doce meses, para así intentar su adaptación y liberación. Aquí pueden realizar su entrenamiento por tres meses; el lugar, luego, se conectará mediante una cuerda con los árboles de afuera. Los perezosos, con un dispositivo de rastreo, podrán ir y venir a su antojo, hasta que decidan por sí mismos que su vida es en el bosque. La idea es que las crías también aprendan a ser autónomas. Así se logrará aumentar el número de crías liberadas en el bosque y reducir el número de animales en cautiverio.

onations from the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment (Miami Zoo) and SeaWorld Busch Gardens Conservation Fund made it possible to build another new enclosure. The APPC hopes to be able to help six to twelve month old sloths in this enclosure with adaptation and then release. Here they will undergo training for three months, after which a rope will be strung to the trees outside.

The sloths, outfitted with tracking devices, can come and go as they please until they decide to move to the woods for good. The youngsters are taught to be independent in hopes of reducing the growing number of babies in captivity.

Since 2006, the Association has also received support from the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund. Rob Yordi, Executive Director of the Conservation Fund, has stated that “The dedication, passion and knowledge that the APPC team shows is one of the many reasons why we are pleased to support the organization.

We know that our support (consisting of funds, technical staff, and field staff) is being used in the best possible way to benefit the animals that arrive for the care of the APPC team from all over the country.”

En 2008, The Guardian le dio el segundo lugar como la Librería más bella en el mundo y en 2019 National Geographic la nombró la Librería comercial más bella del mundo.

Construida dentro de un antiguo teatro de principios del siglo pasado, su belleza impresiona. El ambiente clásico que daba vida a los shows de tango en la década de los 20 nos transporta a una época brillante y de mucho glamour.

Solo por la grandiosidad del lugar, la visita ya vale la pena y gana aún más importancia cuando empezamos a darnos cuenta de cuántos libros están alojados allí.

Adecuado para recibir todas las estanterías de libros, pequeñas salas de lectura y un café bar, el espacio transformado en librería dispone del subsuelo, dedicado a la sección de literatura y música infantil; tres galerías, que mantienen la arquitectura de un teatro de ópera, con sus paredes recubiertas por infinidad de volúmenes, y una cúpula pintada por Nazareno Orlandi.

The classic atmosphere that gave life to the tango shows of the 1920s transports us back to a bright and glamorous era. It is worth visiting for the grandeur of the place alone and it becomes even more worthwhile when we realize how many books are here.

Ample enough to include bookshelves, small reading rooms, and a coffee bar, this theater- turned-bookstore also has a basement dedicated to children’s literature and music.

Palermo es uno de los barrios más conocidos de Buenos Aires, famoso por albergar los lugares más cool de la ciudad. Y es exactamente caminando por allí donde se puede avistar la librería de fachada roja con su vitrina iluminada, abriendo las puertas a sus impresionantes estanterías de libros, que van de techo a piso y cubren toda pared disponible. Al fondo de la tienda está la cafetería: un espacio cubierto y acogedor dispuesto para el café y la charla, y por qué no, un trabajo de última hora, pues tiene Wi-Fi. En los Libros del Pasaje la atmósfera es tranquila y agradable, y ofrece diversos títulos de literatura universal. Posee una sección entera sobre artes como la fotografía, el cine y la pintura. También hay libros de poesía, literatura argentina, filosofía, guías de viaje e incluso libros en inglés y una sección para los más chicos. El lugar te dejará loco.

Palermo is one of the best-known neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, famous for having the coolest places in the city. Walking around the neighborhood, you can spot this bookstore’s red façade and illuminated display window, and open the doors to its impressive floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that cover every available wall space. At the back of the store, the cafeteria provides a covered, cozy space perfect for coffee and conversation, and why not, a last minute project, since it has Wi-Fi. The atmosphere at Libros del Pasaje is calm and pleasant and the shelves offer a diverse range of world literature. It has an entire section on the arts, including photography, film, and painting. There are also poetry books, Argentine literature, philosophy, travel guides, and even books in English and a section for children. You will go crazy in this place.

Es gracias a Pablo Braun, librero y editor, que Eterna Cadencia existe desde el 2005. Después de dejar la herencia familiar, lograda con grandes cadenas de supermercados, montó una librería y una editorial, como resultado de una intensa rutina de lectura, donde se veía hipnotizado por un libro durante más de quince horas al día. Fue entonces cuando resolvió transformar su pasión en un lugar físico para mantenerse en contacto con ese mundo imaginario de las letras.

Eterna Cadencia es famosa también por publicar libros de escritores argentinos y latinoamericanos. Parte del local está reservado para exponer los libros publicados por la librería, dando visibilidad a la literatura local y apoyándola.

El ambiente cuenta además con un bar, una terraza perfecta para la lectura y un espacio donde es posible trabajar, estudiar o simplemente viajar por medio de una historia.

Pablo Braun, bookseller and publisher, is the reason Eterna Cadencia has been around since 2005. After leaving his family inheritance, which came from large supermarket chains, he decided to honor his intense love of reading. He would often be utterly absorbed by a book for more than fifteen hours a day. He was determined to transform his passion into a physical space, a bookstore and publishing house, so he could keep in touch with the world of imagination and letters.

Eterna Cadencia is famous for publishing books by Argentine and Latin American writers. Part of the store is reserved for displaying the books published by the bookstore, promoting and supporting local literature.

The store includes a bar, a terrace perfect for reading, and a space where you can work, study, or simply let a story take you on a journey.

Librería de Ávila

Es la librería más antigua de la ciudad y, según algunos historiadores, allí se vendió el primer libro en Buenos Aires y, años más tarde, el primer periódico. A pesar de haber pasado por una serie de cambios y remodelaciones, su fachada ya deja claro que es un lugar lleno de historias.

La librería surgió en 1785 en una botica, conocida como La Librería del Colegio hasta 1994, cuando así la bautizó su nuevo dueño: Miguel Ávila.

Entre sus más de cien mil ejemplares se encuentran los libros más raros y antiguos del país. Estar allí, acompañado de un tango que suena en un antiguo tocadiscos, te da la certeza de ser parte de un importante fragmento cultural de este país.

This is the oldest bookstore in the city and, according to some historians, it is the place where the first book was sold in Buenos Aires; years later, it became the place where the first newspaper was sold. Despite having gone through a series of changes and remodels, its façade alone makes it clear that this is a place full of stories.

The bookstore was founded in 1785 in an apothecary shop. It was known as La Libería del Colegio until 1994, when its new owner, Miguel Ávila, renamed it.

Among its more than 100,000 volumes, you can find the rarest and oldest books in the country.

Being there, accompanied by a tango playing on an old turntable, makes you certain you are part of an important cultural fragment of this country.

We already know that Buenos Aires loves books, but their omnipresent display is altogether admirable and interesting to see. First Aid from Panama

esde noviembre del 2018 funciona en Panamá el primer Centro Logístico Regional de Asistencia Humanitaria (CLRAH) o Hub Humanitario. Su objetivo es aprovechar el entorno económico y político estable del país, su menor vulnerabilidad ante fenómenos naturales y su conectividad aérea y marítima para garantizar una respuesta mejor coordinada, rápida y eficaz frente a posibles desastres que afecten a los países de América Latina y el Caribe.

I

n November 2018, the first Regional Humanitarian Assistance Logistics Center (CLRAH), or Humanitarian Hub’s, began operating in Panama. The Hub’s main objective is to take advantage of the country’s stable economic and political environment, its reduced vulnerability to natural phenomena, and its air and maritime connectivity to ensure a better coordinated, faster, and more effective response to possible disasters in Latin America and the Caribbean.

l CLRAH maneja el Depósito de Respuesta Humanitaria de las Naciones Unidas (UNHRD), que abarca 12.000 m2 repartidos en tres espacios, los cuales son operados por el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA), la Federación Internacional de la Cruz Roja y de la Media Luna Roja (FICR) y el Sistema Nacional de Protección Civil (SINAPROC) de Panamá, respectivamente. Tiene además un área de cuartos fríos de 1.122 m2 para almacenar insumos como medicamentos y vacunas.

El CLRAH se basa en los resultados positivos que los organismos internacionales han tenido en la región al atender emergencias humanitarias desde Panamá.

LRAH manages the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD), which covers 130,000 square feet distributed across three spaces operated by the World Food Program (WFP), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), and Panama’s National System of Civil Protection (SINAPROC). It also has 12,000 square feet of cold storage for supplies such as medicines and vaccines.

The CLRAH was inspired by the positive results international organizations have had addressing the region’s humanitarian emergencies from bases in Panama.

El proyecto tiene una tercera fase, que comprende la infraestructura aeroportuaria con conexión a la pista del Aeropuerto Panamá Pacífico, a un monto estimado de diez millones de dólares.

The project has a third phase, which includes airport infrastructure connecting to the Panama Pacifico Airport runway, at an estimated cost of ten million dollars.

Desde su inauguración, el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Panamá ha suscrito acuerdos de cooperación y asistencia humanitaria en casos de desastres de los países de la región, con la Dirección Ejecutiva del Proyecto de Integración y Desarrollo de Mesoamérica (DEPM), la Secretaría General de la Comunidad Andina (SGCAN), la Agencia Caribeña de Emergencia por Desastres (CDEMA) y el Centro de Coordinación para la Prevención de los Desastres en América Central (CEPREDENAC).

El proyecto tiene una tercera fase, que comprende la infraestructura aeroportuaria con conexión a la pista del Aeropuerto Panamá Pacífico, a un monto estimado de diez millones de dólares.

ith support from Copa Airlines and Hub users, for example, Panama was one of the first countries to provide assistance and humanitarian supplies to the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, and the British Virgin Islands following recent hurricanes Irma and María.

Since the Hub began operating, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama has signed agreements with the Executive Directorate of the Mesoamerican Integration and Development Project (DEPM), the General Secretariat of the Andean Community (SGCAN), the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Agency (CDEMA), and the Coordination Center for the Prevention of Disasters in Central America (CEPREDENAC) to provide cooperation and humanitarian assistance in case of disasters in countries around the region.

Volvió a gozar de sus andanzas solitarias durante los recreos y cómo se escondía de los demás, murmurando las historias que iba construyendo para que no la delatara su propio entusiasmo.

he breathed her fill of her own self. She went back to being the six-year-old escaping dragons among the thicket of hedges in the school courtyard. She went back to enjoying her solitary ramblings during recess and hiding from other people while formulating stories in a whisper, so as to not be betrayed by her own enthusiasm.

Las cáscaras de huevo eran señales que el dragón había dejado en su estampida. ¿O serían la escritura secreta de un destino? Claro que el huevo duro venía en los almuerzos de la primaria, lo sabía, pero, hasta que no sonara la campana, los trocitos de cáscara podían significar que el nido del dragón estaba cerca. Una vez dentro del salón de clases, regresaba a las tablas de multiplicar sin ninguna confusión.

Aunque, a veces, se perdía en el ocho por cuatro, y volvía a trotar entre las ramas secas del invierno, tarascando la rebanada de pan tostado, cuya cubierta de mermelada le enmarcaba la boca con dulzuras sofocantes mientras buscaba la guarida del dragón bebé.

Se llenaba los pulmones de esa sensación de ser ella, de tener un lugar en la existencia, lugar que ella iba construyendo con cada nuevo pensamiento, con cada vuelco de su acalorado corazón.

The eggshells were signs, left by the dragon as it rushed away. Or could they be the secret script of destiny? Of course, she knew that hard-boiled eggs were served for lunch at her elementary school, but until the bell rang, the shell fragments could reveal the presence of a dragon’s nest nearby. Back in the classroom, she returned to the times tables with a clear mind.

She did sometimes get lost at 8 x 4 and find herself once again running under the withered branches of winter, chomping a slice of toast whose coat of jam smothered her mouth in sweetness as she searched for the baby dragon’s lair.

She breathed her fill of that feeling of being herself, having a place in the universe, a place she solidified with every new thought, with every beat of her impassioned heart.

legaba la noche y en el universo de su cama, porque sólo su cama era algo suyo en esa habitación compartida con la hermana menor, ella podía cerrar los ojos en la oscuridad para mirar un confín de galaxias remolineando bajo sus párpados. Estrellas polares navegando en cúmulos de nieve, arrecifes fulgurantes donde especies ignotas danzan con las alas abiertas. Podía, también, abrir los ojos y hurgar en las pesadas cortinas del balcón algún resquicio de luz. Sólo el vapor de la luna que asomaba guiñando el ojo arriba de los edificios, derramando sombras largas por la alfombra. Por momentos, se estremecía. Prefería cerrar los ojos, convertirse en la reina de su propia nocturnidad.

Así, recordó el jabón deslizándose como pez juguetón sobre su piel, en medio de una tempestad. La regadera estaba loca y se ponía fría y luego caliente y otra vez fría. Había que abrir al máximo las llaves, inundar la tina. Volvió a llenarse de sus impostergables carcajadas entre las cosquillas de espuma y de los regaños que le imponía al pez que no se estaba quieto entre sus manos. Ella era alguien con una profunda y apasionada vida latiendo en el filamento mismo de la nervadura con la que Dios la había hecho.

nsconced in the universe of her bed at night —the bed being the only thing that was really hers in the room she shared with her younger sister— she could close her eyes in the darkness to gaze upon the confines of galaxies whirling under her eyelids. Polar stars drifted on mounds of snow and unknown species spread their wings to dance upon gleaming reefs. She could also open her eyes and search for a sliver of light among the heavy curtains across the balcony, finding only the misty moon that winked above the buildings and threw long shadows on the carpet. At times, she shivered. She preferred to close her eyes and become the queen of her own nighttime.

She remembered the soap gliding like a playful fish across her skin in the midst of a storm. The shower was bonkers, going from cold to hot and back to cold again. You had to open the taps all the way, flood the tub. Once again, she breathed her fill of her irrepressible peals of laughter among the tickles of foam and the scoldings aimed at the fish that refused to stay still in her hands. She, herself, throbbed with a deep and passionate life on the nerve fiber God had used to create her.

Le gustaba vestirse con el traje de damita de honor.

Cualquier fecha especial era pretexto para sacar de la bolsa la crinolina de tul, el bolerito de terciopelo con agujetas al frente y el tocado de raso rematado con ondas hacia arriba en cada punta.

Para ella, esas ondas tiesas no podían ser sino las alas con las que flotó durante el desfile hacia el altar. Ella abrió la caravana, soltando margaritas de encaje que llevaba en una canastilla, y todos la miraban sonrientes, con los ojos humedecidos. Ser ella, estar dentro de su piel, volver a entrar en la corriente amarilla del perfume de nardos, esa corriente que gira lentamente hasta ser un torbellino y convertirse en el tejido mismo de las células. La vida, la vida misma.

et again, she breathed her fill of her own self until tiny pulses of sweat beaded her nose. Macarena narrowed her eyes to better feel her life spiraling back into her veins.

She liked to wear flower girl dresses. Any special date was an excuse to bring out the tulle crinoline, the velvet bolero jacket that laced up in front, and the satiny headpiece, all finished off with flipped up hair. To her, those stiff curls could only be wings that wafted her to the altar. She led the procession, tossing lace daisies from a little basket, as everyone watched her with moist eyes and smiled. Being her, existing in her skin, slipping into the yellow perfumed stream of tuberose —a stream that slowly twists into a whirlwind— and becoming the very tissue of the cells. Life, life itself.

Macarena put on her bridesmaid dress at Christmas, on the day of the soccer championship, and on the day when Manchas got a distemper shot.

Pedía el chocolate en un vaso de color rosa que tenía integrado el popote. Porque así era ella.

Era una persona de flequillo negro como charol y cabeza ladeada, como mirando siempre en diagonal, de soslayo, con una suspicacia disfrazada de remilgo o lentitud. Era una persona que saboreaba el chocolate con popote y sabía perfectamente que odiaba el hígado encebollado, los calcetines de lana porque pican y los pasadores en el pelo.

She used to ask for her chocolate milk in a pink glass with a built-in straw. She was just that way. She was someone with glossy black bangs and a head that tilted, as if it looked at everything diagonally, sideways, with distrust disguised as excessive demureness or slowness.

She was someone who savored chocolate milk with a straw and was sure that she hated liver and onions, the prickliness of wool socks, and barrettes in her hair.

ambién ahora, ahora mismo en que está llenándose de ella, vuelve a sentir la sensación de tener un corazón adolorido y un clavo de melancolía en la garganta. ¿Por qué sentir que es ella misma le enciende la cabeza, le agita el pecho, le deposita un lago en las comisuras de los ojos?

Macarena tuvo que respirar varias veces, muy en lo profundo, para no sumergirse en un vahído.

Recuperar esas sensaciones le despoblaba el alma de todo lo accesorio, aparecía en el horizonte de su memoria el légamo fértil de una tierra recién llovida a punto de acoger los brotes de una vegetación largamente dormida. Pronto las lianas formarían columpios y Macarena habría de volar entre las frondas y los claroscuros de un mundo que no había muerto.

nd now, now that she is breathing her fill of her own self, she once again feels her bruised heart and a melancholy jabbing her throat. Why does it seem that it is she herself who inflames her mind, quickens her heartbeat, and waters the corners of her eyes?

Macarena had to take several very deep breaths to keep from blacking out. Recovering those feelings stripped her soul bare of anything extraneous; her memory opened a vista of the fertile mud of soil after rain, ready for the sprouts of long dormant vegetation. Soon the vines would grow into swings and Macarena would fly through the foliage and the lights and shadows of a world that had not died.

a muerte era como la noche. Pero también la noche era un inicio. Las cosas adquirían un contraste diferente. El espejo del tocador se volvía un ojo enorme, por el que uno no debía asomarse, a riesgo a caer en un remolino sin fin, o en el fondo de una botella de cristal perdida en un mar helado. Las cortinas, con sus flores rojas, polvorientas y pesadas, murmuraban secretos indescifrables. Ellas no querían ser entendidas, sólo asustaban. El pecho de Macarena era una piedra a punto de quebrarse. Se quedaba tan rígida, conteniendo la inminente devastación del universo, que amanecía en estado de extenuación, y se negaba rotundamente a ponerse la camisa con cuello redondo del uniforme de primaria, la falda azul marino y el suéter rojo. Se negaba con todo su ser a mover un dedo bajo las cobijas, aunque su padre azotara cien puertas y ladrara otros tantos insultos mientras su madre le calentaba la avena en la cocina.

Cuánto disfrutaba Macarena salir con ojos de fuego hacia el autobús de la escuela, resoplando su furia, porque la habían sacado a fuerzas de esa telaraña que durante la noche había construido con una tenacidad de náufrago, y en la que finalmente había podido conciliar un sueño quieto y calientito.

eath came like night. But night was also a beginning. Everything took on a different cast. The dresser mirror became an enormous eye to avoid the risk of falling into an infinite whirlpool or the bottom of a glass bottle lost in an icy sea.

The curtains, covered in red, dusty, heavy flowers, whispered inscrutable secrets.

They did not want to be understood, only to induce fear. Macarena’s breast was a stone about to crack. She held herself so stiffly, restraining the imminent collapse of the universe that she woke up exhausted, and she firmly refused to put on the round-collared shirt, navy blue skirt, and red sweater of her elementary school uniform. She emphatically refused to move so much as a finger under the covers, even though her father slammed door after door and barked insults while her mother made oatmeal in the kitchen.

How Macarena enjoyed heading for the school bus stop huffing with rage, eyes blazing because she had been forcibly hauled out of that web she had woven during the night with the tenacity of a shipwreck survivor, the web in which she finally dropped into a calm, warm sleep.

rotestaba pateando la mochila. Y se sentía mejor. Buscaba su lugar en el autobús, y durante todo el camino divisaba por la ventanilla el mundo que tenía vedado a los siete años de edad. Pero esta conciencia, lejos de abatirla, le atizaba el ímpetu. Entonces, Macarena reemprendía la tarea de construirse un ovillo más resistente donde estuviera inscrito quién era ella.

Ella no quería entrar al equipo de voleibol, no entendía qué le veían a Sara Méndez para ponerla como capitana; y tejer los repuestos de tinta de las plumas, con hilitos de hule de colores, de modo que parecieran víboras de cascabel, le parecía divertidísimo.

he kicked her backpack in protest. And she felt better.

She sought her seat on the bus, spending the journey looking out the window at the world that was forbidden to her seven-year-old self. But this awareness, far from discouraging her, only energized her. Macarena once again took up the task of building a stronger shell to contain her own self.

She didn’t want to play on the volleyball team and she didn’t understand why Sara Méndez should be the captain; she found amusement in decorating spare ink cartridges for pens, turning them into rattlesnakes with strands of colored rubber.

Se echó los últimos tragos de su botella de refresco, antes de correr hacia el salón del segundo piso, todavía excitada por las imágenes del dragón entre los setos.

he chewed a ham sandwich as she sat on the edge of a planter. She watched the girls play hopscotch and the boys fight in the middle of the courtyard. It was not a great day. The prospect of History class clouded the horizon. But existing in her skin was not so bad. Macarena knew that a willful person lived there. Still excited by the images of the dragon among the hedges, she finished the last of her bottled soft drink before running to the room on the second floor.

¿Cuántos años le faltaban para cumplir los cincuenta y dos que dictaminaba su acta de nacimiento? Macarena suspiraba mirando los días de un calendario vaciado de sí misma. Y se disponía a recuperar la memoria, a volver a llenarse de su propia presencia. Le habían robado demasiado. Había otorgado otro tanto.

El trabajo sería arduo, pero fascinante.

How many years would need to pass before she would reach the fifty-two years levied by her birth certificate? Macarena sighed, watching the days of a calendar wiped clean of herself. She prepared to recover the memory, to once again breathe her fill of her own existence. Too much had been stolen from her.

She had given away another portion. The work would be arduous, but fascinating.

La autora Ethel Kolteniuk Krauze (Ciudad de México, 1954) es doctora en Literatura y autora de cuarenta y tres obras publicadas a la fecha en varios géneros literarios. Su obra Cómo acercarse a la poesía es un clásico contemporáneo y forma parte del acervo nacional en la Biblioteca de Aula y Salas de Lectura de la Secretaría de Educación Pública de México.

Ha construido una plataforma teórica y didáctica de la creación literaria, que ha vertido en su obra ensayística: Desnudando a la musa: ¿qué hay detrás del talento literario?; además de su exitoso modelo con perspectiva de género Mujer: escribir cambia tu vida, puesto en marcha en vinculación con la actual Secretaría de Cultura Federal y la Secretaría de Turismo y Cultura de Morelos, donde reside. Es catedrática en el posgrado del Colegio de Morelos y en el Tec de Monterrey, Campus Cuernavaca. Desde el año 2000 pertenece al Sistema Nacional de Creadores Artísticos del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes de México.

The Author Ethel Kolteniuk Krauze (Mexico City, 1954) has a PhD in Literature and, to date, has published 43 works in several literary genres. Her book, How to Approach Poetry, is a modern classic and forms part of the collection of the Mexican Ministry of Public Education’s Classroom Library and Reading Rooms programs.

She has constructed a theoretical and educational platform for literary creation, channeling it into her essays in Undressing the Muse: What Lies Behind Literary Talent? She also created a successful gender-aware model in Woman: Writing Changes Your Life, implemented in collaboration with the current Federal Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture in Morelos, where she resides. She teaches graduatelevel classes at the Colegio de Morelos and the Cuernavaca Campus of the Monterrey Institute of Technology. Since 2000, she has been a member of the National System of Creative Artists of the National Fund for Culture and the Arts in México.

Salud a Bordo Personal Health

En Copa Airlines, deseamos llevarlo a su destino seguro y a tiempo. Además, queremos que tenga una experiencia positiva. Los viajes largos pueden ser muy excitantes pero también extenuantes.

Seguir estas instrucciones puede reducir el estrés, la fatiga y evitar los síntomas que se producen como consecuencia del cruce rápido de los husos horarios durante su viaje.

Consejos para un viaje saludable: • Duerma bien la noche anterior y descanse todo lo posible durante su vuelo.

• Mientras se encuentre de viaje, intente dormir la misma cantidad de horas que dormiría al estar en su casa. Tome siestas de 30 a 40 minutos.

• Tome mucha agua y/o jugo antes y durante el vuelo.

• Ingiera alimentos ligeros durante su vuelo.

• Evite bebidas con cafeína o alcohol.

• No permanezca en la misma posición por mucho tiempo; haga los ejercicios de estiramiento que se muestran a la derecha y camine cada vez que pueda.

• Vista ropa y zapatos cómodos.

Rotaciones de tobillo / Ankle Circles Levante sus pies y gire sus tobillos en círculos. Haga cinco círculos rotando cada uno de sus pies en el sentido de las agujas del reloj y en el sentido contrario del mismo.

Raise your feet off the floor and rotate your ankles in a circular motion. Make five clockwise circles and five counterclockwise circles with each foot.

Estiramiento de rodillas a pecho / Knee to Chest Stretch At Copa Airlines, we work hard to get you to your destination safely and on time. We also want to make your travel experience a positive one. Long-distance travel, exciting as it may be, can also be tiring.

Following these tips can reduce the stress and fatigue that may occur with long-distance travel and combat the jet lag that may result from crossing time zones on your journey.

Tips for Healthy Travel: • Get a good night’s sleep and rest as much as possible during your flight.

• Try to stick to your normal sleep schedule as much as possible during your trip. You may find it refreshing to take short, thirty to forty minute naps as you adjust to a new time zone.

• Drink plenty of water and/or juice before and during your flight.

• Eat light meals during your flight, and limit or avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol.

• Don’t stay in one position for too long; perform the simple stretches shown on the right, and take short walks when possible.

• Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.

Relax your shoulders. Stretch you neck toward your left shoulder; hold for a few seconds, slowly roll your head toward your chest, and then stretch toward the right shoulder. Hold for several seconds and then reverse, rolling your head from right to left. Repeat three times.
