ACE expands into second hall

isitors and exhibitors returned to transport logistic and air cargo Europe, which is set to be another busy and successful event.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Stefan Rummel, managing director of

Messe München, welcomed the delegates, saying how much the demand has recently grown.

He told the audience: “We have 2,279 exhibitors which has grown by 10%. Demand is so big, especially from abroad, the proportion of foreigners is 56%. We have had to open yet another hall.”

Highlighting the continued importance of conferences, Rummel said: “It is truly one of the biggest shows in the industry where we come and discuss solutions and approaches. It is the multimodal platform on a worldwide basis.”

He added: “Shows reflect the economic situation. The new Silk Road, artificial intelligence and the lack of qualified personnel will all be reflected on during the event.”

The opening ceremony was moderated by Susanne Franke, with Rummel followed on stage by Andreas Scheuer, federal minister of transport and digital infrastructure, talking about logistics issues and what the ministry is doing to resolve transport issues.

Scheuer said: “Germany will remain the number one for air cargo. We will maintain 24 hour operations and necessary approvals, interconnected relations with different carriers.

"We will make sure Germany is the logistics location of the future for all different modes of transport.”

ettainer will change its management with Carsten Hernig moving over to Lufthansa Cargo after five years at the top.

On 1 July, Thomas Sonntag will take over as managing director of the outsourced unit load

device management company. Hernig will take up the role as head of region Latin America and Caribbean at Lufthansa Cargo, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Harald Gloy, chief operations officer at Lufthansa Cargo and member of Jettainer’s Advisory Board says: “We would like to thank Carsten Hernig for his successful work and are delighted that he will remain within the Lufthansa family.”

Speaking about Sonntag’s arrival, Gloy says: “As a proven supply chain expert and experienced manager, Thomas Sonntag will continue to drive Jettainer’s success story into the future.”

irBridgeCargo Airlines and CargoLogicAir have entered into a global partnership with booking platform cargo.one, being the first cargo airlines to make capacity available for digital booking with instant confirmation.

Through the partnership, the two airlines will be able to market their global capacity to cargo. one’s growing customer base of hundreds of freight forwarding companies digitally.

Robert van de Weg, vice president sales and marketing for Volga-Dnepr Group says: “Offering our capacities on cargo.one enables us to meet customers’ growing demand for digital solutions and to give forwarders of all sizes access to our large global freighter network.”

David Kerr, CEO of CargoLogicAir adds:

“Being capable now to better reach small and medium-sized forwarders through cargo.one will also help us increase our short-term capacity sales and thus our load factors, to grow even more sustainably.”

eutsche Post DHL (DPDHL) ended its first Disaster Response Team (DRT) deployment in Africa in mid-April.

On Friday 12 April, 2019 the last DRT members moved out of Beira, where cyclone Idai the month before had damaged over 700,000 hectares of crops, and destroyed close to 200,000 homes. The team, in its time there, moved nearly 800 tonnes of incoming humanitarian aid from approximately 50 aircraft for further distribution to those displaced and affected by this natural disaster.

The DRT was deployed at Beira Airport between 24 March and 12 April at the request of the United Nations. Twelve DHL volunteers from Mozambique, South Africa and United Arab Emirates worked in rotation across three teams. Over the course of nearly three weeks, the volunteers handled incoming relief goods and coordinated incoming humanitarian aid for the United Nations and international relief organisations.

Chris Weeks, director for humanitarian affairs at Deutsche Post DHL Group who headed up the deployment said: “This particular deployment was ground-breaking for us in that it was our first mission to Africa. The challenges however were familiar and within the first few days of arriving the DRT firmly established its coordination expertise in the supply chain of incoming humanitarian aid.”

He continued: “All too often the sudden influx of relief aid to an airport creates bottlenecks and aid is unable to get out in a timely manner. This was precisely the scenario the team was trying to avoid and able to do so successfully.”

During their time in Mozambique, the DRT acted as a liaison between the Beira Airport Authorities (ADM) and the large humanitarian community who occupied a vast area at the air-

port. The team supported international relief organizations such as IFRC, UNICEF, UNHCR, WHO, ASB, WFP, USAid and UKAid, and assisted with handling equipment, driving forklifts and high-loaders, and ensuring there was no build-up of incoming shipments.

“Over 80 partners including the Government of Mozambique, NGOs, UN agencies and Red Cross teams are taking part in the humanitarian response following Cyclone Idai, one of the worst tropical cyclones ever to hit Africa and the southern hemisphere.

"The logistics expertise of Deutsche Post DHL Group’s DRT complemented the relief efforts from all these different partners at Beira Airport. We are grateful to the DHL volunteers who worked tirelessly alongside the humanitarian community to help move relief items efficiently in order for those affected to receive help as quickly as possible”, explains Stephen Cahill, global logistics cluster co-ordinator at United Nations World Food Programme.

DR ROBERT SCHOENBERGER ACW: If you could compare yourself with any animal, which would it be and why?

Schoenberger: A wired-hair dachshund (just google it). They are small and inconspicuous. But they set the tone in the family, as we were allowed to experience for ourselves as kids.

ACW: What was the last gift you gave someone?

Schoenberger: I was in Florida for Christmas and New Year.

I brought some presents from there.

ACW: Do you prefer to be right, or be liked?

Schoenberger: Easy. I am used to being liked because I am right.

ACW: If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island and all your needs, such as food and water, were taken care of, what two luxury items would you want to have with you?

Schoenberger: A fluffy towel. And a smartphone with good coverage and unlimited usage.

ACW: What is the most interesting fact about you that we would not learn by looking at your resume?

Schoenberger: My right arm is two centimetres longer than my left one.

ACW: Do you wear jeans outside of work?

Schoenberger: Not necessarily – I also have a variety of shorts and some skiing pants, which I need some weekends.

ACW: We finish the interview and you step outside the office and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning 10 million euro. What would you do?

Schoenberger: With the lottery ticket? Well, I would redeem it at the next lottery store.

ACW: What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever worn?

Schoenberger: I remember a summer vacation in Croatia, when I forgot my swimming trunks during a trip to the sea.

My mother gave me a bikini bottom from my sister.

I was very ashamed. That was five or six years ago - no, I was five or six years old.

ACW: If you were on Death Row, what would be your last meal?

Schoenberger: I like any kind of Spaghetti. If you need a good recipe for a fried Zucchini sauce, just ask me.

ACW: What would I find in your fridge right now?

Schoenberger: Essentially things that need to be cooled and that I want to keep fresh. I strive for a consistent cold chain.

ACW: What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?

Schoenberger: A few years ago I bought a Vespa from 1972.

CUNIS, the co-operation between Unitechnik and AMOVA both from Germany, planned and implemented the new air cargo terminal in Addis Ababa for government-owned Ethiopian Airlines. The air cargo facility covers 38,000 sq m, an area as large as five soccer pitches. It is divided into refrigeration and a dry storage zone. Some 600,000 tonnes of fresh food and dry goods can be transshipped at the installation. The cargo terminal is pioneering both in regard to throughput and logistics processes as well as its security standards, say the developers.

To attract investors and the business world to the land-locked country, Ethiopia had to guarantee that local goods can be exported and transshipped rapidly. The government and national airline Ethiopian Airlines (EAL) laid the foundation with the new air cargo terminal. In doing so, they are also making a sustainable investment in Ethiopia's general infrastructure.

Dry goods and fresh products like coffee, meat, flowers, fruits and vegetables can now be shipped around the world from Addis Ababa. The transport of perishables play a decisive role and are also important prerequisites for trading.

The new air cargo facility expands the capacity of the existing air freight terminal which was planned and built by the ACUNIS Group and creates the conditions for the efficient transshipment of fresh goods. Ethiopian Airlines has increased its previous throughput capacity with the new facility from 350,000 tonnes per year to nearly one million tonnes.

"In the long term, in making this investment, we want to estab-

lish our capital not only as a freight hub for the African continent, but also as an international cargo hub. This puts us in direct competition with hubs like Dubai," explains Tewolde Gebre Mariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.

From landside to airside

Export and import orders as well as transit processes are handled through the new facility in which the terminal serves as a transshipment point. The freight center is divided into a spacious refrigeration zone (17,000 sq m) with temperature ranges from 2 to 10 degrees Celsius and a non-refrigerated dry zone (19,000 sq m). The computer-controlled installation has capacity for 600,000 tonnes of freight per year. The hearts of the terminal are two automatic warehouses for air cargo unit load devices, (ULDs). Containers of various sizes can be combined in the 20 feet compartments, so that up to 1,000 10 ft ULDs can be stored simultaneously. Four fully automatic elevating transfer vehicles (ETV) are used to handle the heavy aluminium containers weighing up to 6.8 tonnes. The demands on the process chain are especially high to ensure optimum throughput. Maintaining the cold chain for fresh products also has top priority for the airport’s operators.

st air cargo terminal to capacity since the beginning of the year guarantees compliance with the cold chain throughout. Special coolers ensure products entering the facility are cooled to the target temperature.

Incoming and outgoing goods are inspected using the latest x-ray technology and go through quality assurance by expert personnel. To prevent unauthorized individuals from gaining access to the facility, the terminal is equipped with a state-of-the-art access control system. A comprehensive camera system (CCTV) also monitors safety-critical zones and makes the warehouse processes transparent even after the fact. The safety of workers at the workplace is also of great importance: light barriers at the gates protect access to the fully automatic section and stop the automatic system as soon as persons enter the critical zone. To ensure permanent availability of the automatic systems, warehouse operation is also backed up by several generators. In the event of a power failure, these generators are started and cover the installation's electricity requirements for several hours.

The brain behind the logistics facility is the warehouse management system (WMS). The control system is based on the own UniWare software platform, manages all warehouse slots and co-oordinates all automatic and manual movement of goods, including the movement of goods between the landside and the airside. The WMS system coordinates the arrival of goods at the truck ramp and assigns pallets a slot in the manual high-bay store. On the airside, the system identifies arriving ULDs and controls their storage in the automatic ULD high-bay racking store. In the zone between shipment pallet warehouse and ULD storage, the ULDs are loaded (builtup) or unloaded (breakdown) using height-adjustable workstations. Workers keep the complex material flow under control using the UniWare-VISU visualization integrated in WMS. This feature shows the state and processes inside the warehouse in real-time. The intuitive warehouse management system can be operated from anywhere in the warehouse thanks to mobile data terminals. UniWare communicates with the Cargospot host system which handles the overall coordination of freight orders.

"Our WMS has interfaces to all cargo hosts and thereby ensures reliable processes in the sophisticated cargo logistics. UniWare is currently in use at more than 12 international airports," reports Sebastian Sommer, project manager of ACUNIS. ACUNIS's mandate included the planning of the entire terminal, including construction and realization of the complete logistics installation. Since the existing construction site was on a slight incline and proved to be insufficiently stable, one half of the terminal had to be lowered by eight meters. "This development did not turn up until we were in the planning phase and demanded the utmost in flexibility from us. We had to build another road and

plan lifts to compensate for the difference in elevation," Sommer said.

Using the solutions suggested by ACUNIS, construction costs for the terminal stayed within the forecast budget despite the new design requirements.

The state airline is already prepared for any future expansion of the facility with the planned addition to the terminal to accommodate 1.2 million tonnes per year.

The contracts will see Atkins – which is part of Heathrow Airport’s Integrated Design Team – provide design and advisory services as Heathrow prepares for further public consultation in June, followed by

submission of a Development Consent Order application in 2020.

The scope of work includes: airport connectivity, ensuring people and goods can move to, from and around the airport seamlessly; energy and utilities; water, including drainage and flood prevention; land use and development zones; and construction delivery support, which will see Atkins advise on Design for Manufacture

and Assembly, modern methods of construction, and the design of temporary infrastructure.

Atkins is the lead consultant for all five contracts and will be supported by its integrated design partners (Arup, Grimshaw, Mott MacDonald, Jacobs, Quod and Woods Group), plus WSP and Buro Happold.

Steve Tasker, aviation market director at Atkins, said: “As we continue to design plans for Heathrow’s sustainable expansion, this collaborative delivery model will allow us to work at pace and with agility. As one of seven consultants in the integrated design team, we’re designing interdependent assets on a scale not seen before in our industry and in a manner which will set the benchmark for future major infrastructure programmes.”

Barry Weeks, head of design for Heathrow, said: “As early adopters of Project 13, we see the IDT as the perfect vehicle to drive and develop the way Heathrow works with its supply chain and industry partners to provide long-term value to its customers. Atkins will draw on local expertise and its regional hubs to deliver the work, with a focus on providing career and development opportunities for graduates and apprentices.

ACI Europe responds to European ATM future statement

ACI Europe notes that the report rightly calls for increased operational integration between airports and ATM through data sharing and collaboration. This is welcome. Indeed, ground capacity and airspace capacity are intrinsically interdependent.

Ultimately, there will only be as much usable capacity in the sky as there is on the ground – and vice versa. However, the report mainly focuses on En-Route capacity and does not follow a total aviation system approach.

For the proposed new centralised approach to succeed, Europe’s airports consider that a new modus operandi based on increased cooperation between ANSPs, airlines, airports and the Network Manager as well as changes in ‘operational culture’ is essential. This will require a reconsideration of the governance and management of the Network Manager - to ensure an effective and meaningful industry involvement in its new roles and responsibilities. From a passenger experience perspective, while

The report advocates a centralised approach as the enabler for delivering efficiencies, based on new roles and responsibilities for the Network Manager - a function currently performed by Eurocontrol. Accordingly, the Network Manager would in the future come to act simultaneously as airspace manager, ATM capacity manager and infrastructure manager. This means that the Network Manager would encompass enhanced day-to-day operational network functions, strategic oversight of ATM capacity planning & delivery, and also replace the current SESAR Deployment Manager.

Europe’s airports do not object to such an approach – not least because the current ATM set up has proved unable to ensure de-fragmentation, which is instrumental to achieving greater efficiencies.

ATM network efficiency is key, trade-offs might be needed to protect local airport capacity.

Europe’s airports support the recommendation for tower services to be based on contractual relationships as a key enabler for airport and ATM integration. This is however dependent on ANSPs’ acceptance and regulators providing the right framework.

ACI Europe looks forward to continued engagement with the European Commission and EU Member States and to becoming fully involved in the follow-up of the report.

russels-based airport trade association Airports Council Europe (ACI) reacted in mid-April to the report delivered to the European Commission by the ‘Wise Persons Group’, which sets out recommendations on the future of air traffic management (ATM) in Europe.

The report takes stock of the failures of the Single European Sky and of the need for reform, due to the impact of current ATM inefficiencies on the travelling public and airspace users, says ACI Europe. While ATM inefficiencies also impact airports at various levels, ACI Europe is especially concerned with their impact on the environment - and in particular climate change. Last year, these inefficiencies led to an additional +5.2% of CO2 emitted by aircraft in Europe.

Given calls to limit global warming and the European Commission’s strategic vision towards a carbon neutral economy for Europe, finally delivering the Single European Sky must become a key priority for EU Member States. liver Kingham, founder and managing director of UK-based LLM Handling, is an evangelist for the potential of automation processes to move the warehousing sector forward. Founder of Load. Lift.

Move. (LLM), he could hardly contain his excitement when news of a potential robotic parking scheme at London Gatwick Airport was unveiled to the British public.

How excited was he? “Very! The pilot scheme at Gatwick to trial a fleet of valet-parking robots marks an important step change in the automotive machine handling area. While automated lifting has been around for a while – used by the likes of ThyssenKrupp, Coko and Avo - the innovation here is around the software being used to manage the process,” says Kingham.

He considers that, like many other industries, technology is driving efficiency in the automated handling space. Current industry standards for anything automated are for the machine to react to its environment – using lasers, sensors and wires to detect obstacles or

people. This technology being piloted takes it to the next level and actually proactively manages where the cars go.

His opinion is that if consumers are willing to entrust their vehicles to a droid booked via an app, then the opportunities for warehouse solutions are almost limitless.

He says: “Consumers are increasingly demonstrating their willingness to hand over tasks and processes to a digital environment – online banking and online shopping are both clear evidence of this.

“In this case, consumer demand will drive innovation in the automotive space, which will inevitably lead to more cost-effective solutions – and that’s one of the main reasons it hasn’t happened yet in warehouses. As costs come down, this will change and the opportunities will be huge.”

In the future, warehouse management could be done almost entirely by robots. Some may have concerns about this. What does Kingham say to those concerns?

“Robotics for automation has existed for decades but mixing this technology with the Internet of Things (IoT) has the potential to revolutionise the industry beyond all recognition. The truth is that we’ll eventually expect all devices to be connected to the internet and every company will need to either own or rent an IoT platform to remain relevant.

“Robots have been helping companies make materials and products since the 1960s and currently account for around 65% of processes within welding and painting. It won’t happen overnight – just like it didn’t in the car industry – but it will happen.

Celebi automates at Istanbul Airport

ith the opening of Istanbul Airport in April, Turkish ground handler Celebi revealed the automation in its new warehouse at the airport.

The warehouse will consist of three separate sections for import, export and domestic cargo transition area. The warehouse, with all these sections under one roof, will consist of an area of 10,940 sq m.

Upgraded forklifts, ULD/palette storage areas and various custom-made rooms for special cargos are on three-levels with an 82-positioned ETV system storage area which will give managers the opportunity to prepare each pallet/ULD and store them until loading, saving space and increasing service quality even further.

A spokesperson said: "Another innovation at Istanbul Airport will be the VNA forklifts. With advanced forklifts and narrowed shelf ranges, we will see a number of positive effects, from efficient use of space to increasing forklift productivity and capacity during peak hours.

"Along with all this, we will be using a new system called CargoCEL to increase the quality of our work and save us valuable time.

Last but not least, we will have 322 moving CCTV system with HD cameras to have surveillance over the inside, outside and all entrances to the warehouse,."

Industrial processes need the right energy solution

rom electrically-driven forklift trucks to humanoid robots, it is extremely important to have the right power supply.

The energy provided must be high-power and reliable.

Lithium-ion batteries are considerably more efficient and powerful than the lead acid batteries that are still widely used today. For example, with 100 watt hours per kilogramme, they have three times the energy density of a lead battery.

As well as tailor-made battery solutions, the Power division at VARTA Storage now offers the EasyPack Industrial standardised ready-to-use lithium-ion battery packs designed for use in the “industrial/robotics” area.

Customers receive a battery solution that can be used immediately. No external battery management system is needed.

“Developing a separate, individual battery solution involves an expensive and lengthy process. It can easily take a year, and costs add up to six-figure sums” says Gordon Clements, general manager from VARTA Storage.

The project: Hamburg Airport, Dakosy, Cross Freight, Delta Stallion, a.hartrodt, Sable, LUG, Swissport, the Customs Office and Hamburg Freight Forwarders Association

Airport, employing more than 1,500 people Hamburg Airport Cargo Center (HACC) was constructed at a cost of around 50 million euros and opened in May 2016. In total, around 20,000 sq m have been allocated to logistics space for handling companies and forwarding agents. Directly adjacent to the large freight hall are 44 loading ramp positions for trucks and 36 for articulated trucktrailer combinations. A 60-metre underpass under the street, Weg beim Jaeger, means that the new airfreight facility is linked directly with the airport’s apron. HACC has an annual capacity of around 150,000 tonnes of airfreight.

FAIR@Link in 4-year Hamburg pilot

The goal of introducing FAIR@Link is to standardise and optimise processes at Airport Cargo Center. This will shorten handling and wait times in the air cargo centre, increase transparency along the transport chain and also minimise errors and costs by avoiding duplicate entry of data. A particular advantage is that the system prepares the Customs release and can automatically transmit it electronically upon entry into the Hamburg Airport Customs area.

Another important aspect is the Door Management System: as part of the pilot project, time slots are booked for the delivery of goods to the airfreight centre. The delivery company as well as the handling partner of the airline can thereby plan coordinated schedules for the delivery of goods.

As a result, drivers can reduce wait times on site and dispatchers can more easily plan for necessary capacities. It’s also a step towards protecting the environment: digital processes use less paper.

Pilot project

FAIR@Link will initially be used at Hamburg Airport in a fourmonth pilot project. In this phase, the project partners will concentrate on export processes. In addition to the initiator Hamburg Airport and Dakosy, the project participants include the forwarding agents Cross Freight, Delta Stallion, a.hartrodt and Sable, airline handling partners LUG and Swissport, the Hamburg Airport Customs Office and the Hamburg Freight Forwarders Association.

With the regions of Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and parts of Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Denmark, Hamburg Airport has a large catchment area. More than 150 air cargo companies have their headquarters in the area around Hamburg

amburg Airport has become one of the first airports in Germany to introduce the FAIR@Link air cargo community system.

Developed by software house Dakosy, FAIR@Link is a neutral, IT-supported air cargo community system that enables all companies involved in freight handling processes - in particular handling agents, forwarders, truckers and airlines - to optimize and accelerate their transport and freight processes for both import and export. Customs, security, dangerous goods and supply chain management processes are also supported - in many cases even automated. The pilot project started at Hamburg Airport Cargo Center on May 6, 2019.

"I’m pleased that we can implement the pilot project at Hamburg Airport Cargo Center together with our experienced partner Dakosy," says Alexander Müller, head of cargo at Hamburg Airport.

"I’m certain that the standardised early data exchange between the process participants made possible by FAIR@Link will create great added value for everyone. The pilot project will provide us with conclusive results for the processes at our air freight centre."

rom the start of April, Aireon, the first ever real-time, global air traffic surveillance system, has been fully operational and in trial use over the North Atlantic. Aireon’s space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) system provides real-time air traffic surveillance and tracking to 100% of ADS-B-equipped aircraft on the planet. Prior to Aireon’s system coming on-line, traditional ground-based surveillance covered just 30 percent of the globe, meaning civil aviation authorities, commercial carriers

and related industry stakeholders relied upon position updates from aircraft every 10-14 minutes to track aircraft outside of radar coverage, not the real-time updates that the Aireon service provides.

“For the first time in history, we can surveil all ADS-B-equipped aircraft anywhere on earth,” said Don Thoma, CEO of Aireon.

“Our air transportation system has operated with a safe but less than efficient system in the 70% of the world that does not have real-time surveillance. With the launch of our space-based ADS-B

service, Aireon now provides a real-time solution to that challenge—one that will radically optimize flight safety and efficiency.

The aviation industry has now joined the rest of the 21st century where real-time connectivity is relied upon for doing business.”

The Aireon system is expected to reduce overall flight safety risks by approximately 76% in the North Atlantic according to a joint analysis by NAV CANADA and NATS - the first Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) to use the service. Improved visibility and control over previously un-surveilled airspace—especially across oceanic regions—will allow airlines to fly routes at optimal speeds and levels, delivering expected cost savings of up to $300 per transatlantic flight, plus reducing carbon dioxide emissions by two tonnes per flight, based on an analysis conducted

by NATS and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Use of the Aireon system over the Atlantic allows for air traffic controllers to trial the reduction of aircraft in-trail separation

distances from 40 nautical miles (nm) to just as little as 14nm, making the airspace more flexible, predictable and able to accommodate the immense growth predicted in the coming years.

“To know the position, speed and altitude of every ADS-B equipped aircraft in oceanic airspace – in real-time – is a transformational change to how our controllers manage air traffic,” said Neil Wilson, president and CEO of NAV CANADA. “The Aireon system provides an immediate boost to aviation safety and airlines will benefit from more fuel-efficient routings and flight levels. Over 95 percent of the North Atlantic traffic is already ADS-B equipped so the fuel savings, along with the reduced carbon dioxide emissions will be attained very quickly.”

Martin Rolfe, NATS CEO, said, “The trial in the North Atlantic, the busiest oceanic airspace in the world, with over 500,000 flights every year and a forecasted 800,000 flights per year by 2030, will demonstrate to the entire aviation industry, that global, space-based ADS-B can revolutionize the service that we provide to our customers and the travelling public by transforming the way we perform air traffic management over remote regions.”

Eight years in the making, Aireon’s ADS-B payloads are hosted on the Iridium® NEXT satellite constellation—the final deployment of which took place January 11, 2019. After receiving control of the final six ADS-B payloads from Iridium on February 7, 2019, Aireon completed payload testing, validation and calibration stages prior to launching the full system into operation to support current ANSP customers.

The new tool will be available to Tigers’ extensive international agent network and will be hosted on the Tigers SmartHub:Connect portal following the release of future versions of Doozee.

Doozee will then allow customers to access live quotes between all Tigers locations globally, and to customise the service they receive through SmartHub:Connect.

he inaugural of the Great Wall Airlines B747-400 freighter service from Shanghai to Amsterdam landed full and on-time" on 1 June, according to Arnold van den Bosch, managing director of Euro-GSA, the carrier's exclusive commercial cargo general sales agent (GSA) for shipments from The Netherlands to China.

The first shipment to arrive from China consisted of "all kinds of cargo, including textiles and machinery parts," van den Bosch added.

"We are involved in the export business, which is mainly machinery parts and spare parts for industry.

"The aircraft is a B747-400 freighter with nose and side doors, flying daily except Mondays, and we are confident of being able to fill it," Bosch added. "We will be bringing cargo from around Europe into Amsterdam airport and then from here to Shanghai and to other destinations in China, as we have trucking services from Shanghai."

Great Wall Airlines is a new joint venture carrier, owned 51% by China Great Wall Industry Corporation, 25% by Singapore Airlines Cargo and 24% by Dahlia Investments, a subsidiary of Temasek Holdings.

The airline operates two B747-400 freighters from its base at Shanghai Pudong. The Amsterdam service will be followed by routes to India, South Korea and Singapore over the next few weeks.
