The Rhenus Group, which has a longstanding history working across the automotive sector, has expanded its in-house capabilities to offer customers a full range of logistics services under one provider. To date, Rhenus UK has largely sup-

ported the automotive sector with the transportation of vehicle parts and sub-assembly projects, with the support of its automotive competence centres across Europe. EMIRATES STARTS ON GREENER ROAD JOURNEYS

EMIRATES has revealed that nearly a third of its dedicated fleet of transport buses for cabin crew in Dubai will now operate on biofuel. The airline’s contracted service provider, Al Wegdaniyah, has committed to operating all road trips with biodiesel provided by Neutral Fuels, one of the UAE’s leading producers of biofuels, utilising locally-sourced, used cooking oil as feedstock. Emirates commissions a fleet of nearly four dozen buses in Dubai alone, to safely shuttle its cabin crew between their homes and the workplace, clocking an average of 700,000 km in a normal month. Similar to operations in the air, route and schedule planning for ground transport is also an important aspect to maximise transport efficiency and reduce emissions. The estimated carbon dioxide savings from this initiative alone is 75,000 kg annually. Karl W. Feilder, CEO of Neutral Fuels congratulated Emirates and Al Wegdaniyah for the initiative, pointing out that it is in line with the energy-related sustainability goals that the UAE has committed to achieve by 2050. Using biofuel reduces greenhouse gases and other pollutants, and the change can be easily made because switching from fossil fuel to biofuel requires no modification to diesel engines and has a positive effect on engines.

NATIONAL AIRLINES TO INCREASE ITS FLEET IN response to the rapidly growing demand for cargo and passenger charters, National Airlines has expanded its fleet with three more B747-400Fs and an A330-200 passenger aircraft. National Airlines’ current fleet includes two B747-400Fs and one B757-200. The Airbus A330-200 passenger aircraft, which has already joined the fleet, is deployed primarily for charters and contract flying for its corporate and government customers. National had acquired three

B-747-400Fs two years back and because of the declining demand for airfreight all of them had been parked in Arizona. Current market conditions have prompted National to pull them out of storage now and quickly induct them into service after completing all the required maintenance checks.

Parked airplanes The first of the three B747400Fs joined the fleet in the first week of October and will begin

commercial operations. This will be followed by the second joining in later this month and the third will join in November this year, making a total fleet of five B-747-400Fs. Commenting on the latest fleet expansion Chris Alf, chairman of National, said: “We always had a plan of bringing out the parked airplanes into service right at the beginning of the year but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. We felt the urgency to bring on these aircraft to support the demand

for moving the urgent relief supplies in support of governments and global aid agencies. It was strategically important for us to bring in additional cargo capacity since there is a huge constraint because of the pandemic taking away the belly capacity on passenger operations. We are happy to offer our global customers with an additional three B747-400Fs.” National B747-400Fs are flying between USA into Middle East, China, and Hong Kong on a daily basis.

Lockdown lifestyles drive growth at London Stansted

eople’s increasing reliance on e-Commerce during the pandemic, coupled with a reduction in passenger flights, has driven significant growth in air cargo at the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) owned London Stansted airport. The current climate has turbo-charged the shift to online shopping, the impact of which is being felt at London Stansted. Earlier in the year, figures from the UK Office for National Statistics showed that the proportion of UK shopping carried out online rose from 19% in February to almost 33% in April as lockdown restrictions took hold. Over the summer months, traditionally the quieter time of year for air cargo, volumes at London Stansted were significantly up on the same time last year. In July and August, volumes at London Stansted increased by 43.6% and 25% in the same period.

Traditional belly-hold operations The shift towards dedicated air cargo operations is also being driven by the lack of traditional belly-hold operations, where goods are transported in the baggage hold of passenger aircraft. With many airlines scaling back long-haul

passenger operations in recent months, the availability of belly-hold capacity has reduced significantly to key markets, especially on popular routes to the US. These volumes are eclipsing what would normally be expected during the weeks leading up to Christmas, which is traditionally the busiest time of year for dedicated air cargo and express freight airlines. It comes after the airports played a central role in transporting essential goods during the pandemic, with shipments of vital medical supplies and PPE helping add to the increase in volume. “The last few months have seen a seismic shift in the way we live our lives. While much has been made of the changes to the way people travel, behind the scenes our airports have been leading the charge in helping the logistics sector adapt to rising demand for dedicated air cargo and changes in the way goods are transported. “This underlines the vital role MAG airports play in supporting the UK economy as it gets back on its feet, and the critical role of air cargo in moving essential products quickly across the globe. Emirates expands its FEMA calls on Volga-Dnepr to deliver fire engine trucks for California network in Europe to 31 destinations

VOLGA-DNEPR Airlines has operated the An-124-100 charter flight for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist the US firefighting mission in California. The two fire engines and a Ford F-250 pickup truck, weighing more than 20 tonnes in total, were delivered from Atlantic City, New Jersey to San Francisco, California after all the documentation was approved within one

day after application. They will join other resources of the country to eliminate further fire spread and bolster firefighting activities in the region which has been struggling with natural disaster. “For more than five years we have been co-operating with FEMA to guarantee fast, seamless and intact humanitarian deliveries to the regions hit by various natural disasters.

With profound and wellaligned relations, we are able to process all the flight issues within the shortest timeframes which is crucial for humanitarian missions when so much is at stake. “Up till now, we have operated over 80 FEMA charter flights delivering more than 3,000 tonnes of essential cargo and we are always on alert with our dedicated services, fleet and personnel,” highlighted Ekaterina Andreeva, commercial director, Volga-Dnepr Airlines. Volga-Dnepr has been supporting FEMA since 2015 with various aid and relief charters facilitated by unique capabilities of its freighter fleet and team of logistics practitioners. The range of cargoes it transports varied from food, water, tents, telephone poles and construction machines which bolstered recovery from natural disasters after devastating Typhoon Soudelor (2015), Hurricane Maria (2017), and Typhoon Yutu (2018). In 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic Volga-Dnepr has operated six charters from South East Asia to the USA with PPE onboard to assist the region in its battle against virus spread.the

China air cargo in gradual August rebound CHINA’S air cargo transport has maintained gradual recovery momentum with cargo volume in August reaching 86.7% of last August, according to the civil aviation authorities. The country’s civil aviation industry handled a total of 546,000 tonnes of air freight in August, statistics from the Civil Aviation Administration of China showed. Both domestic and international air cargo transport sectors maintained gradual recovery, with the transport vol-

umes reaching 86.2% and 87.8% of those in last August respectively. All-cargo freighters carried around 220,000 tonnes of airfreight in August, representing a 20.01% increase as against the same period last year. Civil aviation authorities of China have introduced a series of measures such as simplifying approval procedures to ensure the transport of anti-pandemic supplies and sustain the global supply chain.

OMAN AIR FLIGHTS TO TWO PAKISTANI CITIES

OMAN Air, the national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman, returned to scheduled service on October 1 with service to 18 cities in 12 countries including two flights per week connecting Muscat with the Pakistani cities of Islamabad and Lahore. Flights to and from Islamabad depart and arrive on Sundays and Thursdays. Flights to and from Lahore depart and arrive on Sundays and Fridays. Oman Air will maintain its comprehensive safety programme throughout all elements of the journey.

China’s Hubei launches air cargo route linking Wuhan with Africa

A scheduled air cargo route linking Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei Province, and Addis Ababa, was launched on September 28. A flight carrying some 95 tonnes of nucleic acid testing kits, masks and other epidemic prevention materials took off from Wuhan’s Tianhe International Airport for the African country at 09:00.

All Nippon Airways back at Brussels Airport with cargo-only flights FROM October 13, Brussels Airport will welcome back the Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA). ANA will then resume flights between Tokyo Narita and Brussels Airport. The route will be operated with passenger aircraft that will be used for cargo only. This route will be operated three times a week on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which has a 35-tonne belly cargo capacity. ANA has been flying to Brussels Airport since 2015.

After a temporary suspension of flights due to the current COVID-19 crisis, the direct connection between Belgium and Japan will now be re-established. The airport hopes together with ANA to be able to restart passenger flights soon as well. Since June, ANA has provided real-time quotes for all available air cargo capacity on leading e-booking platform cargo.one. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need for digital booking capabilities within the air cargo industry.

GEBRÜDER Weiss’s strategic takeover of Ipsen Logistics was contractually fixed back at the end of July. Now that the responsible antitrust authorities in Germany and Austria have given their approval, the takeover was implemented as of October 1. Gebrüder Weiss will take on the 180 employees spread across eight locations, thereby strengthening its position in the important German market. While Ipsen’s

Half a million phials with human albumin shipped from Germany to China by AirBridgeCargo AIRBRIDGECARGO Airlines (ABC), has organised a dedicated pharma charter flight from Leipzig to Guangzhou, through Novosibirsk in Russia. ABC’s long-standing partner Kuehne+Nagel safely delivered 19 ULDs from Vienna to the airport of departure with over 500,000 phials of human albumin packaged in Tyvek thermo covers to guarantee supply chain integrity. After completion of the loading, the B747-8F took off with over 105 tonnes of sensitive products in a temperature regime within the range of +2C to +25C. “With most of the antiCOVID-19 shipments switching to slow logistics, we could use this period to test our capabilities for vaccine transportation. Although we have not used special containers for this par-

IN the battle against coronavirus, Air Charter Service says that its offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong proved invaluable in helping to arrange the hundreds of flights the company booked to carry more than 20,000 tonnes of personal protective equipment around the world to over 60 different countries. Justin Lancaster, ACS’s Group commercial director, commented: “We have been booking aircraft carrying protective equipment around the world since the first week of February, initially flying into China and other parts of Asia but, due the spread of the virus, we have now flown aid to all parts of the globe – more than 60 countries. “Whilst the cargoes have been a variety of personal protective equipment, 20,000 tonnes would be equivalent to almost five billion face masks. “We used all types of aircraft including the huge Antonov AN-225, AN-124s, Boeing B747s and Boeing B777s. Due to passenger aircraft not flying on their usual routes at the moment, we have been able to source carriers willing to fill them up with cargo packed securely onto the seats and in the belly hold space. “Every one of our 27 offices has been involved in this incredible effort, and having our Asian offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, where almost all of the cargo is now originating, has ensured smooth operations at the airports and enabled us to be up to speed with the latest airport situations and requirements. Being able to deal with local agents, local shippers and local airports all in the local language and with local currency has meant our charters have run as smoothly as is possible through airports dealing with unprecedented pressure and demand. “Much of our regular work disappeared overnight, but a rebooting of the business means that these charters are going someway to replacing some of the charters we would usually be doing, as well as some project charters that have had to be cancelled. “Now is one of those times where our industry really can make a difference and we feel like we are truly playing our part in helping the world fight this pandemic.”

ACA appoints Glenn Hogben as joint deputy chair THE Air Charter Association (ACA) is appointing experienced aviation consultant Glenn Hogben as joint deputy chair, sharing the role with existing deputy chair Julie Black, to help steer the association and its members through the litany of challenges currently faced by the charter industry. Hogben and Black will each have specific roles and responsibilities aligned with their skills and experience. HL has proven the effectiveness of combining land and waterways through its established canal delivery network in Venice, but the service in London represents its first high speed service.
