DEWEY DECIMAL NUMBER OF THE MONTH

(CRIMINOLOGY)

TRUE CRIME FACTS The Penguin Dictionary of Psychology defines criminology as "a hybrid science - a blend of law, sociology, psychology and medicine - that studies crime, criminals and penology." The term criminology was created in 1885 by Raffaele Garofalo. American sociologist Edwin Sutherland wrote his major work "White-Collar Crime" in 1949. The National Institute of Justice started as the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration in the 1960's and 70's. According to Gale's World of Criminal Justice, "nearly every true crime story revolves around murder, yet murder figures in less than 20 percent of reported crime."
