Dear Friend, If you’ve been to our shelter during these hot summer months, you know how busy it can get.

We see an influx in the number of confused eyes, the number of broken hearts, the number of homeless pets who enter our doors and need a second chance.

That means the need for more dog food and cat litter, more medicine and toys. But it also means more yearning for love and more longing for a friendly face to trust. And it’s thanks to the amazing support and generosity of individuals like yourself, that we’re able to provide both the physical resources necessary to care for these animals and the hope and compassion that keeps them going until they find their forever home.

Thanks to you, more than 3,000 animals will leave our shelter with a new, loving family this summer. You’ll also help us provide affordable spay/neuter surgery to almost 5,500 pets as we continue working to curb the Valley’s extreme pet overpopulation crisis.

And soon, because of your help, we’ll be able to work with close to 700 dogs and treat 600 ill cats when we continue to expand our Behavior Modification Program and cat isolation areas to our Nina Mason Pulliam Campus for Compassion. We’ll also roll out a long-term strategic plan that will help us become the animal welfare organization of the future and save more lives.

New Thrift Store to Serve as Model for Future Expansion We are turning old stuff into new hope for our pets! We are thrilled to announce the expansion of our thrift store operation with the opening of our third location at 4240 West Camelback Road in Phoenix.

The 26,000-square-foot store, which opened in July, is four times larger than our Tempe location and expected to generate more than $500,000 a year in net revenue by 2016, all of which will directly support the life-saving programs and services that help us care for the thousands of pets who rely on us.

The store is a key piece in our newly implemented strategic plan goal to diversify revenue streams to help ensure AHS’ financial sustainability. It will serve as a model we hope to replicate with future additional stores so we can bring in even more funding for our homeless pets and save many more lives!

MARLEY Dear Arizona Humane Society,

All it took was one look into those big brown puppy eyes and we knew she was the one. Marley is now 6 months old and loves taking trips to the neighborhood dog park a few times a week so she can visit her puppy pals. We walk her every morning on her favorite neighborhood trail and she goes everywhere with the family. We even dressed her up as “iron pup” and took her to the premiere of Ironman 3! She loves to play fetch, and when she’s tuckered out, she will cuddle on the couch with us. We are teaching her to retrieve household objects on command and she is one smart cookie! Q: What causes storm phobia,

and what are the best ways to ease a pet’s anxiety?

A: It is thought that animals may be more sensitive to weather

changes and may even be able to predict the arrival of storms. This increased sensitivity can result in an exaggerated fear of storms or storm phobia. Stimulation for storm phobia may be as simple as a change in barometric pressure or an increase in static electricity in the air. Your pet may be fearful of visual cues such as lightning or blowing leaves and dirt. Auditory cues such as rain and thunder may create anxiety for your pet as well.

Storm phobia is one of the most common phobias in dogs, and may present as general anxiety, whining and barking, house soiling or destructive behavior. Phobias often appear in pets under a year of age and may progress in severity if not properly addressed.

Bruce Bean, DVM Celebrating Over 25 Years at AHS!

It is important not to punish your pet when they are suffering from storm phobia as it increases anxiety for your pet.

Storm phobias are best addressed by your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist who has the ability to offer multiple methods of behavior modification.

Dr. Bruce Bean has been with the Arizona Humane Society for more than 27 years, specializing in shelter spay/neuter surgery. He also performs orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries in our Second Chance Animal Hospital™ when needed.

A seasoned veterinarian, he spent time working at private practices in both Phoenix and Detroit, Mich., before coming to AHS. Dr. Bean graduated from Michigan State University in 1974 and performed his surgical residency at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University.

Over the years, Dr. Bean estimates that he has performed around 75,000 spay/neuter surgeries, the majority of which were for dogs and cats, but also a few rabbits, pot-bellied pigs and ferrets.

When he’s not busy doing his part to reduce pet overpopulation, he enjoys doting on his two AHS Brittany Spaniels, Rusty and Casey, who each get their teeth brushed daily!

Obedience classes and daily interaction with your pet are the best ways to prevent or lessen anxiety disorders.

Indoors only: Please keep pets indoors during storms, as even the calmest pet can become frightened and try to jump a block wall or escape under a gate. Pets left outdoors can not only run away, but are also prone to corneal abrasions from flying debris and dirt as well as Valley Fever, an airborne fungus that can lead to a lung infection and intense course of treatment.

Counter conditioning can be used to program your pet to associate storms with positive rewards. Treats, favorite toys or verbal praise should be given to your pet as a distraction from the storm and as a reward when he behaves properly during storms. CDs with sounds of a storm can be played prior to storm season to desensitize your dog to the auditory stimulus of storms. Desensitization allows for exposure to a stimulus at a low intensity that does not evoke a stressful response. A gradual increase in intensity (noise level) may help prevent a severe reaction in the future.

It’s Monsoon Season. Are You Prepared?

Every monsoon season we find ourselves battling torrential downpours and water-logged streets as some of our pets hunker down for safety. Yet, it isn’t only the rain that we have to worry about. Giant dust storms, or haboobs, can also take over and present challenges for both us and our furry friends. During any type of storm, there are precautions that pet owners should take to ensure the health and safety of their pets. This season, be prepared!

Safe haven: Pick a room within your house to outfit with all of your pet’s comforts – bedding, toys, food and water. Spend time with your pet and turn on the TV or radio to help drown out the scary sounds.

ID ready: Make sure your pet wears a collar, ID tag and is microchipped in case they do wander or run away during a storm. A microchip greatly increases the odds that you will be reunited with your pet.

Calming products: Products such as Thundershirts, Storm Defender and DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) have anecdotal reports of helping to calm storm fears. Medications such as Prozac, Clomicalm and Xanax, under the care of a veterinarian, can be used in combination with behavior modification to help ease anxiety.

Consult your vet: If anxiety persists, consult your veterinarian on other precautionary measures.

Healing Hearts The Arizona Humane Society is proud to partner with Healing Hearts Animal Rescue and Refuge as we work together to help save and facilitate the adoption of more equines in our community. The partnership will allow potential local equine adopters a convenient place to come meet their new friends without having to travel to Healing Hearts refuge in Wilcox.

Beginning this summer, horses from Healing Hearts will take up residence at AHS’ Stardust Barn located at our Nina Mason Pulliam Campus for Compassion. Stardust includes an arena and pasture to help our equine friends feel at home. For more information, visit azhumane.org.

Phoenix Animal Cruelty Law Strengthened

In June, the Phoenix City Council voted unanimously to strengthen the City’s animal cruelty laws to better protect Valley pets. Spearheaded by the efforts of the Phoenix Animal Cruelty Task Force, of which AHS is a member, the new law includes the following expanded definitions:

Specifying the need for “medical care and treatment” as opposed to just “medical attention” Requires a person convicted of harboring 10 or more animals to undergo a court-approved psychological evaluation If placed on probation, the court may: º Order counseling at owner’s expense º Require that the individual submit to reasonable periodic property inspections by law enforcement º Prohibit the person from owning any animals

Cruel neglect now means to fail to provide animals with necessary food that is appropriate for the species and fit for consumption, water that is suitable for drinking or shelter suitable for weather conditions.

Legislative Update

Earlier this year, AHS’ Board of Directors voted to contract with a legislative lobbyist who will share information with legislators about causes that our nonprofit organization feels are important to our mission. This represents a significant investment in advocacy efforts on behalf of our companion animals. AHS will not be involved in any political campaigns nor will AHS endorse or support any political candidates. In addition, donor funds will not be used for these advocacy efforts. The Board specifically restricted a portion of earned income from thrift, retail stores, and fees-for-service programs toward the lobbying contract. AHS will receive periodic updates from our lobbying team and will strive to keep our supporters informed on animal welfare efforts in our community. You may also wish to contact elected officials on some of these same issues.

Primp Your Pit is Back!

In our continued effort to combat pet overpopulation in our community while also focusing on at-risk breeds, the Arizona Humane Society is helping to solve this problem with its “Primp Your Pit” spay/ neuter promotion sponsored by PetSmart Charities®.

During August, AHS will spay/neuter pit bulls for a special rate of $20. This special rate applies to all residents of Maricopa County. Pit Bull parents who wish to take advantage of this offer must mention the “Primp Your Pit” promotion when they schedule their appointment. The promotion is based on availability.

New Digs for Our Dogs!

After 56 years of housing Arizona’s most loving pets, the dog kennels at our Sunnyslope facility have received a muchneeded facelift thanks to an amazing donation made in memory of Mary J. Leader. Mary was a true animal lover and the generosity of her family and friends have, and will continue to, make a difference in the lives of thousands of homeless animals as they wait for their forever families.

The 56-year-old kennels were in dire need of an upgrade, and our pets are now enjoying the following improvements: • New kennel entry doors (interior and exterior) • New vertical-sliding doggy doors • New aluminum side grating • Fresh paint in both kennels and surrounding building areas • New piping to supply drinking water • Repair work in masonry around kennels These fantastic kennel upgrades complete the last of three phases from this wonderful gift. Phase one allowed upgrades to our get-acquainted area for dogs to meet their new family members in a private, air conditioned room.

Phase two allowed for improvements to our exercise play yards and included the addition of a misting system, awning, splash pad and grass.

FOSTERING HOPE As tempetures increase, so do the number of homeless animals who rely on the Arizona Humane Society for hope and second chances.

During the summer, the Arizona Humane Society, along with more than 500 foster families, brace for our shelter’s most challenging time. With breeding season behind us, our shelter becomes home to litters upon litters of unwanted puppies and kittens.

They are often found abandoned on the streets or turned in as ‘accidental’ litters and are, many times, underage, underweight and in need of extra attention and care prior to going up for adoption. As the number of litters increase, so too, does the stream of injured and ill pets who seek refuge at our open intake shelter as temperatures soar and heat-related ailments take hold.

We won’t lie: it can often times be overwhelming. Space is limited and resources become scarce, but we utilize all means possible to save lives. From our Emergency Animal Medical Technicians™ and our trauma center, to our foster families and Behavior Modification Program, to our partnering rescue groups and adopters, we leave no stone unturned in hopes of finding a positive outcome for our pets.

It is through these inspirational pets and the people in our community, who open their hearts and their homes to them, that we are able to make a difference one by one.

The purity of a person’s heart can be quickly measured by how they regard animals.

Abandoned and Alone...

Until Now It is unknown how long 5-year-old Cody, a Coton De Tulear mix, had attempted to survive on the streets. But with various ailments ranging from dermatitis to fox tails to a de-gloved tail, Cody was quite a sight for sore eyes.

That is exactly what AHS foster, Debi Fox, thought as she perused the list of AHS pets needing foster care - a list that can reach over 100 during our shelter’s busiest months.

The Fox family brought Cody home where he continued to thrive for several weeks before quickly finding his new forever home in Anthem.

Foster Royalty Longtime AHS volunteer Stan Briggs walks the Sunnyslope cat adoption area watching over his feline friends. Yet, his volunteer time doesn’t end there. When he heads home, he is greeted by royalty: 4-year-old foster cats Prince and Princess.

Their arrival to AHS was nothing uncommon, yet still sad – an owner with not enough time for the special pair. Special, but stressed out by their upheaval, their immune systems weakened and they came down with Upper Respiratory Infections (URI) or kitty colds, a very common and contagious disease.

Knowing the importance of getting the pair into a foster home, Stan took home his 130th and 131st foster cases.

You can be certain that there will be a watchful eye looking over them as they await their forever family.

Maisy’s New Beginning It started out as a typical day for the Good Samaritan who happened to be in the right place at the right time, as 3-year-old Maisy just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. After watching Maisy get hit by a car and dragged across the parking lot outside of a popular music venue in Phoenix, the Good Samaritan was certain that she had been left for dead.

AHS is constantly in need of amazing foster families to join our volunteer force as we strive to expand the walls of our nonprofit organization.

Fortunately, AHS’ Emergency Animal Medical Technicians™ were not far away and were able to rush Maisy to our Second Chance Animal Hospital™. When AHS veterinarians met Maisy’s ambulance outside, they were faced with a gruesome case of road rash, spanning the length of her body, and a back leg that dangled from her hip.

Unfortunately, Maisy’s leg was so severely injured that it could not be saved, and she was rushed into surgery, where her leg was amputated. Maisy then recovered under the watchful eye of AHS vets, as all foster homes were at full capacity.

Fortunately for Maisy, the adoption floor was not far away, which can also be said for her forever family, who she now resides with in Peoria.

Reunited AHS’ Alternative Placement Team Helping to Bring Families Back Together There’s nothing we enjoy more than seeing the endless kisses, the wagging tail and the loving embrace of an owner reuniting with their lost, loved pet. Last year, our Alternative Placement team helped reunite more than 1,000 missing pets with their ecstatic families. Here are just a few of our favorite stories: Annie: It’s not often that we see a

Cornish Rex breed cat come through our shelter, but Annie bucked the trend.

Annie, with her short, wavy coat, entered AHS as a stray. Two days after her arrival, Annie’s owner, Tammy, found her during a walkthrough of our shelter. Tammy was elated to have her 13-year-old friend back home where she belongs.

Loki: Owner Alice was having medical

problems and needed to be admitted to the hospital, leaving her dog Loki with nowhere to go. We took Loki in under our Project Assist program, which provides foster care for the pets of individuals who are hospitalized or in an emergency situation with no one to care for their animals. Two days later, Alice was released and reunited with her loving Loki.

Declan: Declan came in to AHS as a

stray, background unknown. Thankfully, he had a registered microchip and we were able to track down and reunite him with his owner, Tracy. It turns out Declan’s home had been broken into and he had gone missing for more than two months.

Had it not been for his microchip, there’s a good chance Declan would have never found his way back home.

Update: Spay Neuter Pilot Program It has been more than a year since AHS and the Animal Defense League of Arizona (ADLA) launched our joint Spay Neuter Pilot Program to help curb the free-roaming cat population through Trap Neuter Return (TNR).

The program focuses on providing free surgeries for cats in targeted zip codes: 85021, 85051, 85029, 85015, 85302, 85020. Since May, 2012, more than 4,600 cats have been sterilized through the pilot program, as well as AHS’ monthly feral cat clinics, which take place on the third Thursday of every month.

STRATEGIC PLAN/ALLIANCE

NEW VISION, NEW HOPE The Arizona Humane Society is a national leader, innovator and pioneer in animal welfare. We strive to become the model animal welfare organization of the future, and we recently took a major step toward achieving that goal with the implementation of a long-term strategic plan that focuses on four core principles:

Treating and finding homes for more animals in our community Diversifying revenue streams to ensure financial sustainability Aligning our resources with key priorities Ensuring our facilities meet ongoing needs

This plan will guide our decisions over the coming years and help us set a standard for other organizations to follow. But most importantly, our new strategic vision will help us save the lives of more animals, and we’re already making progress.

We recently opened a new 26,000-square-foot thrift store, which is projected to generate more than a half-million dollars in net revenue by 2016 – all of which will go directly toward supporting our life-saving programs and services.

We also remodeled 30 dog kennels at our Sunnyslope facility to serve exclusively as adoption kennels. Since their implementation, dog adoptions at Sunnyslope have increased by 16 percent.

In the coming year, we plan to expand our Behavior Modification Program and cat isolation areas to our Nina Mason Pulliam Campus for Compassion. This will allow us to treat over 600 more sick cats and work with 700 more dogs while they wait for their forever families.

We also hope to grow our Trap-Neuter-Return program to help reduce the number of homeless free-roaming cats as we continue to combat Maricopa County’s extreme pet overpopulation crisis.

With your continued support, our strategic plan can be a success. Together we can make a difference and give more animals a second chance.

Fix.Adopt.Save The Arizona Humane Society is proud to be part of the Alliance for Companions Animals – a group of eight animal welfare agencies, backed by generous philanthropic support, who have joined together to solve Maricopa County’s homeless animal problem by launching the “Fix. Adopt. Save.” initiative. Fix. Adopt. Save. is a collaborative effort to increase spay/neuter surgeries and adoptions and reduce the number of animals euthanized in Maricopa County, while also educating the public about free and low-cost services that encourage responsible pet ownership.

In 2012, nearly 90,000 animals entered Valley shelters. Although an average of 106 animals were adopted each day, another 103 animals were euthanized each day. While great strides have been made - 2012 marked the first year in which adoptions exceeded euthanasia there is still much work to be done if we hope to change that equation.

Never before have so many local organizations come together to tackle pet homelessness in the Valley. The campaign, which focuses on cats and dogs separately, also provides support to our most at-risk pets – Pit Bulls, Chihuahuas and newborn kittens.

As an Alliance member and an open intake shelter that accepts animals regardless of breed, age or medical condition, AHS’ efforts will center around increasing adoptions through our expanded Behavior Modification Program, which allows trained AHS behavior specialists to work one-on-one with animals who are extremely shy or fearful. Our goal is to help an additional 700 pets each year.

Local PEEP Program Wins National Award

Summer Fun For Your Child!

AHS’ Peer Education Enrichment Program (PEEP) recently garnered national recognition when the Boys and Girls Club of Apache Junction received a Merit award from the National Boys and Girls Clubs of America for their collaboration with PEEP.

Is your child spending too much time in front of the TV? How about something a little different and a whole lot of fun this summer? Enroll your child in our service learning-based Camp Compassion – Where CHARACTER COUNTS! – for an experience they’ll never forget.

The Apache Junction group received $500 and a certificate after placing second out of more than 150 entries from across the country. The group also recently won a local Program Excellence Award, placing first out of 12 competing East Valley Clubs.

Our three-day, mid-week camp sessions at AHS’ beautiful Nina Mason Pulliam Campus for Compassion are open to compassionate campers ages 8-12 and will chronicle the shelter journey experienced by our animals. Campers will first discuss how and why animals arrive at our shelter and then learn about other potential stops during an animal’s time with us, including our life-saving Second Chance Animal Hospital™,

Pre-Vet Behavior & Body Language will prepare students with the tools they need to better understand the behavior of animals for whom they care so deeply. Eagle Scout Fills Donation Bins Imagine the surprise of AHS EAMT™, Marisa McHugh, as a Boy Scout flagged her down in AHS’ Sunnyslope parking lot at the end of a long day. Just as our doors were closing for the evening, Marisa guided Nick Faas and his fellow troop members to our donation bins, where Nick and his team filled both to the brim with supplies for our animals.

Nick became a champion for AHS as part of his Eagle Scout Project, in which he and his fellow troop members distributed more than 400 paper bags with AHS’ Shelter Wish List to homes throughout his local Gilbert neighborhood. For his amazing work on behalf of our animals, Nick earned the prestigious Eagle Scout ranking – the highest ranking available in the Boy Scouts of America program. He was also honored with a Humane Heroes award from AHS. On behalf of the hundreds of animals who were able to enjoy the food, supplies and toys donated by Nick and Boy Scout Troop 393, thank you for your generosity and compassion!

PetSmart Charities – A Year-Round Partner As presenting sponsor of this year’s Compassion with Fashion luncheon in March, PetSmart Charities® helped AHS raise more than $484,000 for homeless pets in our community. The organization’s executive director, Jan Wilkins, welcomed nearly 1,100 guests gathered at the Arizona Biltmore in support of AHS to share PetSmart Charities’ mission to find every pet a loving, lifelong home.

In addition to its participation in Compassion with Fashion, PetSmart Charities supports AHS year-round with a number of spay and neuter initiatives, including Primp Your Pit, Beat the Heat and the “Did You Know?” campaign for pediatric spay/neuter awareness. Most recently, PetSmart Charities has committed its support as a major funder for the Alliance for Companion Animals of Maricopa County. The three-year effort will provide 44,000 free spay/neuter surgeries and prepare an additional 7,000 pets for adoption to reduce euthanasia of homeless pets. Canyon Suites Goes Canine Cool The Arizona Humane Society loves spoiling our amazing animals with love and affection.

But every so often, we get the chance to lavish these deserving pets with a little extra special something, and this time, it was courtesy of The Forbes Five-Star Canyon Suites at The Phoenician.

Three special AHS pets recently enjoyed being primped and pampered as they experienced, first-hand, the expansion of the Canyon Suites dog friendly program. Now, furry visitors can enjoy plush dog bedding, signature food and water bowls, natural treats and eco-healthy toys, as well as massages, private photo shoots and a specialized canine room service menu. Ten percent of the proceeds from room service sales during the program’s first year will be donated to AHS to help care for our homeless animals. Project 121: Action for Animals “121” represents the average number of animals AHS takes in on a given day, making Maricopa County second only to Los Angeles County in pet overpopulation. Here at AHS, we serve a vital role in rescuing these homeless pets. However, it is a monumental task to provide ongoing medical, rehabilitative, shelter and adoptive services for 121 new arrivals daily. This hard fact makes our fundraising initiatives critical to the survival of the organization – relying solely on private donations to care for the more than 44,000 animals AHS serves annually. You Hit A Home Run For Homeless Pets!

We asked you to help us hit a home run for homeless pets, and you knocked it out of the park at the 15th annual Compassion with Fashion: 7th Inning Fetch! On March 23rd, nearly 1,100 animal fanatics gathered at the beautiful Arizona Biltmore Resort to enjoy a grand slam silent auction, an out-of-the-park fashion show and, of course, all-star adoptable pets. In total, more than $484,000 was raised to support AHS’ programs and services with 14 pets finding their forever homes.

It is because of the generous support of not only our community members, but also our corporate partners that AHS is able to reach such tremendous benchmarks at Compassion with Fashion and other signature events. Their contributions support the lifesaving programs and services that benefit more than 44,000 pets each and every year. Become a Foster and Give the Gift of Time Lenor Montemayor, Star Thrift Store Volunteer!

Lenor Montemayor, who has been an active Arizona Humane Society volunteer since 2009, is simply a star at our Tempe Thrift Store. As a retired executive, Lenor has brought a high level of professionalism, initiative, and passion to her volunteer work, which made it a natural progression for her to take on training responsibilities for new volunteers joining the Tempe team.

Lenor’s enthusiasm for the mission of our thrift stores – to bring in critical financial support for our animal programs – is never in question, and there doesn’t seem to be any aspect of the thrift business that doesn’t appeal to her. From helping shoppers to running the cash register, from greeting donors to organizing the unique items that come in, Lenor is always moving and always has a smile on her face. Her fluency in English and Spanish helps all of our neighbors feel at home when visiting the store and enhances her ability to be an A+ ambassador for the animals.

What does Lenor like most about working at the store? “All the interesting people I get to meet and talk to, whom I may otherwise not have gotten to know!”

Our animals are lucky to have such a passionate advocate like Lenor on their team! Thank you!

The Arizona Humane Society is always in need of supplies, food, funding, and, of course, adopters to provide a loving home to our awesome pets. But sometimes, the greatest gift you can give a homeless animal is time.

AHS is so very fortunate to have an amazing group of foster parents that open their hearts and homes to our pets. And while we primarily focus on fostering shelter animals who need extra TLC and time to recover from an illness or injury, or babies who simply need time to grow and become adoptable pets, we have a variety of other important programs to help local animals in need.

Project Active Duty It is simply heartbreaking when an active military member is called to deploy, then finds out that his or her back-up plan for a beloved dog or cat has fallen through. Enter Project Active Duty! Our AHS foster parents come to the rescue by caring long-term for pets when their human moms or dads in uniform are overseas protecting our country.

Project Safehouse Domestic violence hurts the whole family, including pets. Since many domestic violence shelters aren’t able to accommodate pets, affected families have another option: to place their pets into AHS’ foster care program while they work to stabilize their housing situation. This gives the family much-needed peace of mind – and the animals some extra love – during this traumatic time.

Project Assist When an emergency arises, such as an unexpected stay in the hospital, a pet parent may need someone to care for his cat or dog. Through Project Assist, AHS foster parents can help!

Please note that to bring an owned animal into one of our special foster programs, certain requirements must be met, and foster homes are limited.
