ECHO ISLANDS, TEN YEARS LATER

Ten years. It’s been ten years since the Echo Islands were put under martial law due to Vol’jin’s rebellion For many residents of the Echo Islands, that moment will never leave their mind, and that is especially true for Ma’kili

To paint a picture of the woman, imagine a short, stocky troll woman covered in scars. Her wild blue hair is cropped short. She had marched on Icecrown under Hellscream’s command, clad in armor and clutching a mace She says she did it for her daughter She believed the Horde would give her daughter a true future It all came crumbling down when Garrosh put the Echo Islands under martial law, and her then-fourteen-year-old daughter would disappear

It would be hard to imagine the sort of monster that would hurt Al’ari A fourteen year old girl with a wide smile, it was said she was studying to become a druid. She could already heal small wounds before she disappeared. She had her mother’s blue hair, but took after her father’s tall frame

Her father, a hero of the Wrathgate, would have been proud of her And her future was bright, until it was taken from her, and didn’t investigate that deeply into it. By the time a proper investigation was able to take place, her trail had gone cold There isn’t a day that goes by that Ma’kili doesn’t think about it

“We managed to trace her last moments,” says Ma’kili “The last person to see her alive was Okuro, and everything we know about her last moments haunts me.”

Okuro, a raptor trainer, lives on the northernmost island He

claims that Al’ari had come to his home a half hour before curfew He told her to stay the night with him, but she swore she could run home fast enough She ran off into the gathering dusk, and as far as reports go, she never made it home. With no one able to corroborate his claims, he’s been a prime suspect in the case

However, few people want to think that Al’ari could be killed by one of their own Al’ari’s friends state that a Kor’kron officer had been weirdly obsessed with Al’ari for a few weeks before her disappearance Attempts to confirm the Kor’kron’s identity

have revealed two other key suspects: Morkosh Hammerforge and Ailka Winterbreath. Of these two, Morkosh is the only one alive. Ailka remained loyal to Garrosh until her death at the Siege of Orgrimmar

Morkosh claims a misidentification, that the girls’ memory must be false His argument may seem weak, but when one considers that the only things that implicate him are the conflicting stories of teenage girls, it becomes easier to understand why the investigation has gone cold There is no physical evidence to tie him to Al’ari’s disappearance, and patrol records of that night show that he had been stationed on the other side of the island from Okuro’s hut.

Ma’kili, interestingly, does not believe her daughter was murdered “She’d been saying we should leave the islands for a while,” she admits “She hated living under the Kor’kron’s thumb. Okuro’s place be too big to guard properly, and it ain’t a long swim to shore.”

She doesn’t hold out hope that Al’ari is alive, though “But the night patterns of the sea out there, they be unpredictable Big waves, steep undertow Al’ari, she swam good But good enough to outswim a vicious sea?”

Ma’kili admits she might be optimistic “I wish she were alive, but if she did, she’d be home by now I just don’t like to think her last moments were her being taken by some monster ” She laughs, looks down, speaks bitterly “I just don’t want to be thinking that Garrosh took everything from

Without any true evidence, it’s unlikely that we will ever truly understand Al’ari’s disappearance But the Echo Islands remember her On the tenth anniversary of her disappearance, her family and friends have come together to assemble a memorial service for her They brought her favorite foods as offerings. The shrine they’ve built is assembled from various plants she loved most. Incense burns to beckon her spirit home They hope that keeping this memorial service up has given her spirit peace

through into that breach, discovering the Shadowlands

The denizens of the Shadowlands described them as an infinite expanse of afterlives, however to this date, fewer than a dozen have been documented Each dead soul is said to arrive in Oribos where it is sorted to its proper destination to then be harvested of Anima Anima, in death speak, is the accumulated experience of the soul, everything that they did in life.

To put it more plainly, the denizens of the Shadowlands are soul-eaters Souls are used to reate new constructs, souls are used to power their machines, souls are used to power their magic. Many of the realms started to die when they didn’t get their regular allotment of soul fuel The crisis of the Shadowlands was one of resources misdirected, all the new dead were sent to The Maw instead of being evenly distributed

What was fixed in the end wasn’t the innate predation of the Shadowlands, but instead inefficiencies in its functioning and excesses in its cruelty

DOES DEATH EXIST?

Bodies fail, hearts stop and the flesh expires, but does anyone ever actually end? The Icecrown Rift was spoken of around the world, a massive invasion breach above Northrend, from which winged warriors emerged, stealing away mortals for petty politics The world’s champions, led by the Ebon Blade pushed

While many of the realms used the dead merely as fuel, three of the realms notably used the dead instead as soldiers The Maw, Maldraxxus and Bastion all remade the dead into soldiers in their own vision, to use to the ends of their realm's masters. And this is, I think, where the story of the Shadowlands falls apart

This is hardly the first time the dead have been remade into armies The Scourge is the obvious example, but it is far from the only one. The Watcher

Odyn has been skimming off the heroic dead of Azeroth for millennia, remaking and light forging them into his own private army, his rival Helya did the same with Hellheim forging the Kvaldir Similarly, the titan Sargeras remade the world of Mardum, where he captured resurrecting demons and forged them into the Burning Legion.

Ultimately, I find that Odyn’s Halls, Helya’s Hellheim, Sargeras’s Mardum and the Shadowlands itself are parasitic sieves, feeding upon and filtering through the flow of dead for usable material, whether that is souls to consume, or soldiers to recruit. Our bodies die, yet our souls continue, laden with Anima, moving to some new destination unless intercepted and harvested first

The mechanisms of death are shown to be repeatedly artifice Strange machines and magics toss our souls about like chits to be bargained with and pawns to expend on petty factional agendas Perhaps a true afterlife is out there, but I

have not seen it beyond the din of mockeries

At present, our deaths are no more natural than rainwater running down a gutter.

In an evening that reverberated with the promise of networking, connection, and exclusivity, I had the unique privilege of attending the inaugural open Meet & Greet event hosted by the esteemed The Society Circle

Granted I wasn't sure what to expect at one of these things but I went anywhere. The exclusive membership lounge that is located in Duskwood (Proxy: Chamber of the Guardian, Legion Dalaran) of all place was asethically beautiful with their valut nearly cathedral like ceiling and stained glassed windows and yet chic with lush furnishing and clean designs.

Despite the eeriness of the surrounding vicinity, you would never know by how extravangant

the hall of the Membership Lounge was.

Central to the allure of The Society Circles's club membership is the access it affords to a diverse and expansive network of individuals This was strikingly evident in the plethora of vendors who had set up shop at the event, representing a spectrum of vocations From delectable cuisine to exquisite artwork, and from fashion statements to essential supplies, the offerings spanned an impressive range Notably, these vendors hailed from various walks of life, underscoring the club's commitment to inclusivity and the fostering of meaningful connections

Intriguingly, amid this gathering of club members,

As the evening progressed, animated conversations resonated throughout the lounge, punctuated by the harmonious strains of live jazz music Friendships blossomed, alliances were forged, and opportunities were exchanged against the backdrop of mellifluous melodies The ambiance was conducive to discussions that transcended the digital realm, a testament to the irreplaceable value of in-person interactions

While the anticipation of future Meet & Greet events remains shrouded in uncertainty, one thing is abundantly clear: the impact of The Society Circles's inaugural open gathering was profound The event underscored the potential of all races, underscored the power of exclusivity when interwoven with genuine warmth and inclusivity Departing from the lounge that night, I carried with me not just memories of a splendid evening, but a newfound appreciation for the transformative nature of faceto-face interactions

In the heart of Stormwind City, nestled just outside the bustling Cathedral District, a haven of love and care for animals awaits discovery. Paws of Hope Animal Shelter, under the new leadership of Alerhynn Carter, is set to continue its two-decade-long mission of finding forever homes for animals in need

Alerhynn Carter, the enchanting force behind the shelter's revitalization, embodies a unique blend of compassion and determination Her warm and expressive eyes, one brown and the other a shimmering silverblue, mirror the contrast of her deep connection with animals and her resolute commitment to their well-being. Her attire, a lavender dress adorned with a golden pendant of The Holy Light and a bright pawprint pin, exudes a sense of dedication and purpose

Speaking about her journey to take the reins of Paws of Hope, Alerhynn shared, "I never intended to take over the

shelter. Paws of Hope was like a second home to me in my childhood, so looking at it now, it seems perhaps this was always the right path for me " The legacy of the shelter, founded by her aunt, Laurethe Carter, nearly two decades ago, resonates with Alerhynn's deep bond with animals and her desire to honor her aunt's mission.

The Paws of Hope Animal Shelter, conveniently located under a powder blue awning just outside the Cathedral District, currently operates by appointment for animal visits Alerhynn, however, has ambitious plans to expand the shelter's reach. "I am working with my team to discuss branching out into selling pet supplies and other items, with profits going back into the shelter to fund animal care and adoption fees When that happens, you will likely see us at various markets!" she revealed

Alerhynn's eyes light up when she speaks of the joys her role brings. "I love working with the animals and finding them the perfect home," she said Her own furry companion, Arlo, a rescue from Paws of Hope, stands as a testament to the deep bond between humans and animals Alerhynn finds immense fulfillment in witnessing the transformative journey of shelter animals to loving forever homes

However, even with her infectious enthusiasm, Alerhynn admits to facing challenges "I have a lot to learn about running [the shelter] I’m in a place where I have so many ideas, but I’m still trying to figure out how to actually make them happen," she confessed with a chuckle

Beyond her commitment to animals, Alerhynn is also a skilled healer with a passion for creating a harmonious environment for both animals and people Her dreams extend to art and creative pursuits, including her fascination with inscription and calligraphy

When asked about her desire to leave a mark in history, Alerhynn's response was simple but profound: "Making a difference I know that’s a vague answer, but if I am remembered, even if it’s just by a handful of people, for putting some good out into the world, I will have lived a happy life."

TRAVELS WITH MEL: JADE FOREST

The day I visited the resplendent Jade Forest changed my life, and when you dive into my expedition account, you might see why it could change yours too Settled in a corner of a universe beleaguered by war, the Jade Forest stretches out in its distinctive emerald hues, a far cry from the chaotic world of Azeroth beyond its enigmatic shores It is a keystone location in Pandaria - a lesserknown, less frequented, yet extraordinarily enchanting region of Warcraft

As soon as my foot ventured off the airship and touched the mystically moist soil of the Jade Forest, the overwhelming amalgam of the perfume of flowers and the musky, primal scent of the primordial forest invaded my nostrils Overhead, the serene cerulean Pandarian sky was dusted with fluffy pearls of clouds dancing around the sun, casting a surreal canvas I couldn't take my eyes off. From the very moment I landed, I felt my anxieties melt away, and an inexplicably tranquil feeling settle in This was a place where generations of Pandaren have lived without knowledge, or perhaps without care for the strife beyond their enchanting paradise. And if you ask me, it's beyond me to blame them.

Not long after arrival, I headed to the Glassfin Village Resort, a cozy retreat nestled on the

banks of a sparkling aquamarine river. The resort’s stunning bamboo architecture, the likes of none I have seen during my years traveling through Azeroth, radiated a humble elegance that I found charmingly irresistible and, surprisingly, affordable The wooden-style bamboo chalets, overlooking the glorious forest on one side and the bubbling river on the other, provided the perfect vantage point to drink in the natural beauty of Jade Forest while enjoying Pandaren cuisine I recall spending countless evenings on the balcony, watching the sun dip behind the cascading hills, painting the landscape hues of pink and lavender.

As one might expect, the forest offers a content-full platter of entertainment and distractions Hiking through the trails painted with lichen and echoed with the hauntingly beautiful song of the native birds was a

delight for the senses. Along with fellow adventurers and explorers, I found a thrill in battling the territorial Hozen and grandeur in documenting the majestic waterfalls cascading down mossy boulders While there, I visited The Arboretum, a local favorite that houses the breathtaking Cloud Serpent race A spectacle that cracked open an effervescent can of adrenaline, exhilaration, and joy, watching the Cloud Serpents engage in heated races across the glorious skies left lifelong memories in my heart

And let's not leave out the village markets! Occupying every corner and cranny of the village, they sell everything from traditional glowing trinkets and Pandaren weaponry to local spirits and the infamous fish cakes and noodles, the crown jewels of Pandarian cuisine

Come dusk, the usually tranquil streets of the small town transformed into a lively carnival rivaled by few The Festival of the Lanterns, where hundreds of colorful lanterns ascend toward heaven, painting the night sky with a brilliant orchestration of radiant colors, was a sight to behold Venturing to the Tipsy Brew Tavern, one can mingle with the local folks, joining them in rhythmic Pandarian folk dances and drinking games. I certainly did. The Pandarian brew is sweet as honey and potent as fire. I enjoyed a night of revelry with my Pandarian hosts that has left me with fond, though hazy memories

As I waved the Jade Forest goodbye, a piece of my heart stayed behind, etched into the welcoming soil of this uncommon land. This emerald oasis of tranquillity exists in high contrast to the world of war Veteran or rookie, if you are hunting for an escapade free from the clamor of a world gripped by chaos, and brimming with unexplored beauty, rich lore, and deeply rooted traditions, I recommend you make your way to Jade Forest where the warmth of the natives and the charm of Jade Forest can leave even the most hardened adventurers feeling refreshed and ready to face the chaos once more

All in all, I give this a ten out of ten and recommend this lush beauty to travelers of all kinds. Luxury. Check.

9. Take 1 cup of raspberries and place in a bowl. Mash berries lightly with the back of a spoon. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar and mix Stir the berries from time to time until the sugar is dissolved

10 Place ½ cup heavy cream in a mixing bowl Whip until soft peaks are formed.

RASPBERRY SHORTCAKE

This last month was my beautiful wife’s birthday So I thought it fitting to make one of her favorite desserts Raspberry shortcake

Ready in 30 minutes

Serves 6 People

Ingredients

2 cups flour

4 tablespoons sugar

1 ½ cup heavy cream

2 teaspoons baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

8 tablespoons butter

2 cups fresh raspberries

¼ teaspoon vanilla

6 fresh mint leaves

Preparation

1 Preheat oven to 450 degrees

2. Place 2 cups flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder, ¼ teaspoon salt in a bowl Mix together

3. Add 8 tablespoons butter and cut into flour mixture using a pastry blender or your hands Blend until coarse crumbs are formed.

4. Add 1 cup heavy cream. Mix just until mixture comes together Knead two - three times until a ball is formed

11. Stir in 1 teaspoon sugar and ¼ teaspoon vanilla.

12. Slice shortcake in half

13 Place a small amount of mashed raspberries on the bottom half

14. Add a few fresh raspberries and top with a small dollop of whipped cream.

15. Add top of shortcake

16. Add another small dollop of whipped cream and a few additional raspberries Garnish with a fresh mint leaf
