HELLO FROM AMBER MORIN

Hello, Arizona Cattle Growers’ Association members.

Allow me to introduce myself. I grew up in the remote Chiricahua Mountains of southern Arizona. When my sister and I were just toddlers, my parents decided to risk it all to become ranch owners. We grew up working right along with my parents like all ranch kids. This instilled in me a desire to continue ranching and both my sister and I are partners in the business today.

After high school, I attended Northern Arizona University. I earned a degree in political science with the goal of staying involved in agriculture because I witnessed how regulatory rules impacted my own family’s business.

As with many things, if you can envision it happening, you can make it become a reality. While continuing to ranch with my family, I have had the privilege of working for multiple Arizona agriculture organizations that greatly contribute to the cattle industry’s success. I also bring with me experience as a freelance writer for Western Ag Life Magazine, leadership as Chair of Project CENTRL’s Alumni Committee, and creativity as the founder of an agriculture podcast. As I take over for Ashlee, as Director of Communications for the AGCA, I am humbled and honored to carry on the remarkable work she has left behind.

I see a great future for ACGA and I am excited to work with Jerome Rosa, Summer Johnson, ACGA President Billy Elkins, executive committee leadership, the state board, and all of you to ensure that ranching continues in Arizona for many generations to come. It is a privilege to be able to work on behalf of ranch families across the state. I look forward to meeting you all.

FAREWELL FROM ASHLEE MORTIMER Almost two years ago, I wrote my first letter as the Director of Communications for the Arizona Cattle Growers'. Today, 21 months later, I write my last.

Looking back on my first letter to you, I have many of the same thoughts as expressed then. I am honored to have worked on behalf of Arizona ranchers.

Thank you for inspiring me! The dedication and passion you show while caring for the land, raising cattle, and providing safe and nutritious beef is inspirational.

I am honored to have created 21 issues of the Arizona Cattlelog, a vital resource, and publication with you in mind. A magazine found on many of your dashboards and coffee tables. A magazine that connects ranchers with ranchers, details accomplishments on behalf of you, informs and educates.

I am honored to have shared the Arizona ranching story with consumers on social media and the Arizona Cattlelog, Consumer Edition. The Arizona Cattlelog, Consumer Edition was created to connect, inform, and educate the public. ACGA's social media presence brings this idea full circle as we connect with consumers daily. The compilation of stories, topics, and photos promotes a positive producer image. With your help, this effort has reached over two million consumers in the last two years.

I am honored to have been a part of establishing a cohesive image and voice for Arizona Cattle Growers' both through words and visuals. A tool surrounding ACGA's mission and our promise to the members.

As my time at Arizona Cattle Growers' ends, I am honored to join my family's operation as the Chief Marketing Officer in Dewey, Arizona. In this role, I will continue to share the story of agriculture with the public and connect consumers and producers in an effort to protect and promote our livelihoods.

To all the members of Arizona Cattle Growers', thank you for allowing me to be a part of the movement created over the years by the grassroots of our Association. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of furthering the Cattle Growers' mission of protecting, promoting, and sustaining cattle ranching. Thank you for allowing me to play a role in advancing the directive of the membership.

As we look to the future, I have the utmost confidence in Amber, ACGA's newest team member. The communication reins are in good hands. I look forward to continuing to see cohesiveness, income created through Cattlelog advertising, the ranching story being shared with the public, and ranchers connecting with ranchers.

President's Address It has been a busy couple of weeks. Our new Executive Director, Jerome Rosa, I, and John Ladd attended the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Summer Meeting. One of the main issues discussed was the 50/14 Bill introduced by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.).

The Bill would require large-scale meatpackers to buy 50% of their cattle on the cash market and do so within 14 days of their sales.

Large cattle feeder groups in Kansas, Texas, and California have a significant number of votes, whereas Arizona Cattle Growers’ only has two. This presents a challenge for many of the smaller beef states who are looking for a more equitable pricing program for their cattle. Unfortunately, in a close vote the new proposed program brought forward by 20 state cattle organizations was delayed until October 1, 2020.

Our state Cattle Growers’ Executive Committee has been having discussions on new policy regarding the inspection system in Arizona. The Committee’s hope is that cattle growers are not the only ones that are inspected. We encouraged our members to provide us with input and this was discussed in Springerville at the ACGA Summer Meeting. Also, at the Summer Meeting we voted on policy to present to the Department of Agriculture and to the Governor’s Office. We still encourage and welcome all our members to reach out to us and give us your opinion on how we should move forward.

Thank you to all of you who bought litigation tickets. That money helps us to fight legal battles on behalf our members in the coming year. We are also looking at starting up a political action committee to fund and support politicians who are friends of the industry. Committee chairs have been reassigned and I would like to give a hearty thank you to those who have served previously. You all have done a tremendous amount of work for the Arizona Cattle Growers’ and your efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Letter from the Director One of the things I enjoy most about being an executive director is the opportunity to travel throughout the state and meet with new members in new places. Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Coconino County Annual Meeting, in Williams, Arizona. The morning started off with a quick business meeting, followed up by a roping. Normally, a barbeque luncheon is served, but unfortunately due to Covid19, the lunch had to be canceled this year. After the roping was concluded, a joint meeting with the Coconino Farm Bureau and Cattle Growers took place in the grandstands of the roping arena. I had the opportunity to meet with many of our members, of whom I hope to get to know better moving forward. I had the pleasure of having a long conversation with United States Congressman Paul Gosar, who has served the Arizona 4th Congressional District since 2013. Gosar’s district includes most of rural western Arizona, as well as several Phoenix suburbs. We discussed a broad range of issues affecting Arizona ranchers, particularly Mexican gray wolves.

I would appreciate the opportunity to attend as many county annual meetings as possible this coming year. Please send an invitation to the office well in advance of your annual meeting, so we can get it on our calendar. I am more than happy to do a slide presentation and a question and answer session if you would like.

On another front, President Billy Elkins, second Vice President John Ladd, and I attended the NCBA Summer Conference in Denver, Colorado, from July 27th-29th. The main topic of discussion at the meeting was a proposal brought forward by several mid-western states regarding an increased level of negotiated mandatory cash trade. This proposal was signed by twenty states, including the Arizona Cattle Growers. After a lengthy (six hour and 22 minute) discussion that was extremely contentious at times, the proposal was defeated. Unfortunately, a couple of states with a large number of votes were able to hold off the proposal until after October 1, 2020 at which time, if agreed upon triggers are not met, then legislative efforts seeking mandatory levels of cash trade will begin. In addition, we had the chance to attend meetings on both private land and public land issues as well as a host of other topics that affect cattle ranchers.

Finally, it is a priority of mine to make sure that ranchers from every corner of the state, regardless of ranch size, are represented by ACGA. Feel free to call me anytime with questions, comments, or concerns.

Government Relations Update

Redistricting Written by Jay Platt Every ten years, the census is accompanied by “reapportionment,” or redistribution of seats in the House of Representatives.

This means the U.S. House of Representatives is limited to 435 members who are reapportioned among the states based on population results every census. Arizona currently has nine representatives and is expected to pick up a tenth in the reapportionment process. Nine other states will each lose a seat.

Historically, Arizona’s legislature established the boundaries for both congressional and legislative districts. However, in 2000 a ballot proposition changed this by creating a redistricting commission known as the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (Redistricting Commission).

Applications for the Redistricting Commission seats are submitted every ten years to the Commission on Appellate Court Appointments, a group appointed by the governor that vets the applicants and sends 20 names to leadership in the legislature.

The legislature then selects two republicans and two democrats. The four appointees then select a fifth member who must be an independent. These five members constitute the Redistricting Commission, drawing congressional and legislative districts that will remain until the next census.

Prior to 1964, most states with a bicameral legislature like Arizona’s elected state senators by county. For example, in Arizona, each county elected two senators and House members were elected based on population. Like the Great Compromise of 1787 that protected small states by having each state send two senators to the U.S. Senate while the House of Representative members were elected based on population, rural areas were similarly protected.

The 1964 Supreme Court decision on Reynolds v. Sims voided this protection, holding that senators were to be elected based on population. This stripped rural areas of meaningful representation in state legislatures. Chief Justice Earl Warren said, “The purpose of the decision was to increase representation for the cities: it has, by effectively disenfranchising rural voters.”

Demographically, rural Arizona should have one representative on the Redistricting Commission. Ten years ago, it had none. The result was disastrous. This webpage, which allows users to see both legislative districts and congressional districts, illuminates the impact of not having rural Arizona’s voice represented on the Redistricting Commission: https://azredistricting.org/districtlocator/. Note that Yuma, Yavapai, Gila, and Pinal countries were split into two congressional districts. The town of Yuma itself was split into two districts with part being placed with Tucson. Part of Gila County was put with Apache Junction and the extreme southeast part of the Phoenix Metropolitan Valley. Additionally, Cochise County was put in the same congressional district as much of Tucson.

State legislative districts similarly dissected counties and towns. Rural towns like Snowflake, Taylor, Clay Springs, and Heber were grouped with Flagstaff. Show Low and Pinetop were positioned with Apache County and the Navajo, San Carlos, White Mountain, Hualapai, and Hopi Reservations. The town of Yuma was, again, split up.

Rural Arizonans must have a seat on the Redistricting Commission to prevent erosion of representation. Demographically, there should be two entirely rural congressional districts that represent rural interests. State legislative districts must likewise keep rural interests together.

Trichomoniasis Rule Written by Peter Mundschenk DVM, Arizona State Veterinarian, Arizona Department of Agriculture Trichomoniasis (Trich) has been recognized as a venereal disease of cattle that has been caused issues for western herds since at least the early 1950s. Trich has an impact on the reproductive performance of infected herds through fetal losses and decreased pounds of calf at weaning. Characteristics of this disease such as venereal transmission and typically transient female infections lend itself to control. However, unapparent, chronic infections in older bulls have been an obstacle to eliminating trichomoniasis from many extensively managed cattle due to the economic implications of trich, the Arizona Cattlemen put together a rule at the annual Summer Meeting in 2017. The new rule went into effect June 8, 2020 and includes the change of ownership testing of bulls.

“Change of ownership” means when a bull is sold, leased, gifted, or exchanged and changes premises for breeding purposes in Arizona.

Under the new rule, the official test for import into Arizona, or for the change of ownership within state lines, is the Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Culture and pooled samples can be used for annual diagnostic tests when used as part of a preventative herd health plan. However, they are not considered official tests for regulatory purposes such as change of ownership or importation. Official testing shall be done by an accredited veterinarian and an official USDA tag needs to be placed in the bull and recorded on the testing form. The official trichomoniasis test is now applicable for 30 days prior to importation and 60 days for in state change of ownership if the bull is isolated from all female cattle after testing. An approved laboratory and the veterinarian are required to immediately report any positive test results to the State Veterinarian’s Office. Such report should include the official animal ID ear tag, brand, owner name, address, telephone.

If a bull tests positive, the same veterinarian will then return to the ranch verify the ID of the bull and brand the bull with an "S" brand adjacent to the tail head on the right hip. If the veterinarian cannot return to the ranch in a time that is reasonable for sale of the bull, the producer shall take the positive T. foetus bull directly to the regional livestock sale yard. The producer shall immediately notify the sale yard of the positive T. foetus bull and it will be “S” branded. Failure to notify the sale yard of the positive T. foetus bull will result in a violation of this rule and the producer shall be subject to the penalties of A.R.S. § 3-1205(D).

The new rule requires that bulls over 12 months of age being imported, or changing ownership, must be tested negative for trichomoniasis.

This means is if you take your bull over 12 months to an auction, it must have a negative trich test done by an accredited veterinarian to sell as a breeding bull. If you do not have a trich test, you can make arrangements to have testing done at the sale yard and be sold after a negative test, as long as the bull has not been with cows 7 days prior to coming to the sale.

Pursuing Authenticity Written by Kaitlynn Glover, Executive Director, Public Lands Council & NCBA Natural Resources They say the only things certain in life are death and taxes, but I’d argue that livestock production is pretty darn certain.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington, D.C. looked like a ghost town as political staff and industry group employees largely worked from home. Of course, this wasn’t the case for the Public Lands Council, since we were able to work from our office for the duration of the pandemic, but we were some of the few souls populating the blocks surrounding the White House.

This year, the certainty agriculture provided set ranchers apart from most everyone else in the country. Ranchers are professional social distancers and in large part, were able to easily comply with state requirements in a way that was more difficult for those in the city. In other ways, though, COVID required ranchers to be far more adaptable than the rest of the American public. This year, we have seen ranchers, agencies, and industry groups use technology in new and inventive ways: agencies finally joined the 21st century to hold permittee meetings over the phone and video conference, conferences went totally virtual, and even regulatory comment periods were able to implement modern technology. While there’s no question gathering in person will continue to be a core part of our industry for decades to come, this year provided us an opportunity to tackle the changes in front of us with different tools.

We must keep that momentum through the end of the year. In July, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service issued a proposed rule to define what would qualify as “habitat” under the Endangered Species Act. This proposed definition is one of many regulatory changes we’ll see coming in the coming days. In short order, agencies are expected to issue a whole slew of regulatory proposals: ESA, grazing regulations, species-specific issues, and others that are critical to public lands ranchers. For the habitat proposal, our first priority is to make sure the definition does not make the ESA more restrictive, and that definition does not require private landowners to change the way they manage their lands to create habitat where there wasn’t any before.

This year has required us to be adaptable in ways we never could have imagined, and I am confident it makes us more prepared than ever before to face the challenges of the coming days. Agriculture and public lands ranchers are resilient, adaptable, and essential. I am proud of the work we have done, and I am looking forward to the work we’ll do with all of this potential unleashed.

NCBA & PLC Highlights Importance Of Public Lands Ranchers In Senate Hearing Ethan Lane, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Vice President of Government Affairs and representative for the Public Lands Council (PLC), testified before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic to the public lands cattle industry. The testimony highlighted the importance of public lands ranchers during the pandemic, including their role in resurging the American economy.

National Cattlemen’s Foundation Now Accepting Applications for W.D. Farr Scholarships The National Cattlemen’s Foundation is now accepting applications for the W.D. Farr Scholarships for the 2020-21 school year.

Two $15,000 grants will be awarded to outstanding graduate students who demonstrate superior achievement in academics and leadership and are committed to beef industry advancement.

FWS Seeks Comments on Proposed Habitat Definition(s) Under Endangered Species Act (Comment Period Closes SEPTEMBER 4TH) The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), in coordination with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), issued a proposed rule which seeks to establish a definition of “habitat” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The proposed rule is the first of two expected rulemakings related to the way “habitat” and “critical habitat” are assessed and designated under the ESA.

The Many Faces of ACGA Ben Menges Ranch Families

I’m a fifth-generation rancher located in Graham and Greenlee counties. A typical day for me varies depending on the time of year. Most of my time in the summer is spent maintaining waters. In the spring and fall I am gathering cattle and branding.

I’ve wanted to be a rancher for as long as I can remember, so after I graduated from the University of Arizona. I had the privilege of knowing what I wanted to do.

Concerning the monthly theme of pursuing authenticity, I don’t think there is anything more authentic than the family behind the ranch and the beef. As for me, my family is expanding. I am recently engaged and ranch life is looking less lonely now that I get to share it with my future wife, Ashley Jeffers-Sample.

The Menges Ranch, and many others throughout the state, have unique, authentic family stories to tell. These stories are ones we can use to connect with consumers. They are people, just like ranchers, and I think we have a lot more in common than not.

It was October 1962, when Pete and Loretta Brawley returned to their roots in Graham County and began working for the Ellsworth family on the Hackberry Ranch. Roughly 58 years later, my dad and mom, (now 90 and 88 years young), are proud to see four generations actively working our own cow/calf operation southeast of Safford.

I realized early on in our process to transition the ranch from dad and mom to the next generation that it would be necessary for us to operate the ranch differently than they had. Therein lies the challenge. How do you respect the people and practices that helped form you while adapting to the ever-changing business of ranching? I believe the first step is to give yourself permission to change.

Working full time for Farm Credit West has blessed me in many ways. It has allowed me to spend quality time with some of the finest people in our industry. One of the most enjoyable parts of my job is the time spent with our members while reviewing their businesses and goals. No two Arizona ranches are the same. nor are their operating and marketing practices. Understanding this gives you the confidence to make needed changes.

When working with different families and reviewing their goals and objectives I always listen for the “why”. In my opinion, it is critical to be authentic and understand and accept “why” each of us ranch. With your permission, let me be transparent for just a minute. The reason I choose to ranch is rooted in the family-centric lifestyle. Our ranch does not have the ability to support multiple generations nor do we need it to. For Dawn and me, our seven grandsons and two granddaughters (all under eight years of age) are the important thing. They remind us that the blessings and benefits of ranching far exceed the profits we will ever see out of a couple hundred head of mother cows.

While we are all diverse and our operations unique, many of us have similar challenges. It is imperative we combine our efforts as we address current and future obstacles that will surely come. To be successful against these challenges we need a strong organization and representative. ACGA gives us that. We need to support ACGA as it supports us. Find someone who isn’t a member and ask them to join.

Generational Wisdom Kyle Lackner Pursuing Authenticity through my eyes

My name is Kyle Lackner, and I am a fourth-generation cattle rancher in Graham County. My wife Kristen and I, along with our three kids, work hard together and take pride in providing quality beef for this great country. I will always remember my grandfather telling me to, “Get it done while you're young, before you get too old."

I am learning everything takes time. You can't accomplish everything overnight. Take time to slow down and enjoy the small things. Take a moment the next time you are in the branding corral to look around and appreciate that moment with your family and friends. We live an amazing lifestyle. It will always be changing, not only will it change us, but our ranch and our cows will change, improve, grow. Catching avocado rustlers is sort of a cross between the Covid virus, wildfires, exchange students bearing addictive goodies and coon hunting. "All right, come down outta that tree and drop that avocado. Frisk him, Ken and don't forget to check for lemons."

In the southern California county of Ventura you will find the occasionally fractious co-mingling of densely populated residential areas and intensive orchard and truck farming. I'm sure there was a time when farmers gladly supplied their neighbors with enough lemons, strawberries and avocados to keep 'em in guacomole and shortcake each growing season.

But as urban pressure increased, uninvited pickers began to take advantage. "I'm only takin' two or three. They'll never be missed." Unfortunately it eventually became, "I'm only takin' twelve hundred pounds. They can grow more."

Farmers complained. They reported their losses but by the time it got to court the evidence had turned black and the district attorney's office had bigger fish to fry. "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, my client, the defendant, is accused of stealing twelve avocados. He was having a party, wearin’ masks, of course. Safeway was ten miles away and it was two o'clock in the morning! C'mon get serious. We’re letting felonious shoplifters out on the street!"

The Farm Bureau organized and by working with the Sheriff's department was finally able to convince the proper politicians that the once minor shoplifting of an avocado had grown into a thriving black market and was causing significant losses.

First they passed laws with teeth. Stealing avocados can be a felony punishable by up to one year in prison or $5,000.00.

They implemented a chain-of-evidence procedure that established a value on the stolen goods immediately so the avocados did not have to sit in the evidence room until the time of trial.

Farmer signed up with the National Property Registration Service, O. A. N. It enabled them to report a theft at 3:00 A.M. The sheriff's office punched in their number which had been expanded to include explicit directions to any of the farmer's groves. Reflective numbered markers, like street signs were posted at the exact locations. Sheriff's deputies, including their canine corps and helicopter could then converge on the location in a matter of minutes.

With the thumping helicopter overhead lighting the area and snarling dogs in hot pursuit, the midnight thieves soon found themselves treed, tried and trundled off to San Quentin.

Results have been better than expected. Theft is down substantially and the Farm Bureau and Sheriff's office have established a mutually beneficial relationship.

It strikes me that Ventura's example might be inspiration for other counties around the country where people think 'pick yer own' applies to them. Midnight sweet corn thieves, watermelon felons or protesting pilferers would think twice.

However, I don't think theft has ever been a problem for growers of zucchini. I know we can't give ours away. It's like givin' away kittens. I've never seen anyone try and steal one. www.baxterblack.com

My name is Katie Kelly, and I'm a new hire this year to the Animal Services Division at the Department of Agriculture. In the office, I work as an administrative assistant processing applications and payments, filing certificates, and working as a point of communication for our ranchers, vets, and inspectors. I graduated from the University of Oregon last spring and am new to the Phoenix area. Before my recent move, I worked as a high school wrestling coach and loved to stay active with outdoor activities in the Pacific Northwest. Much of my livestock experience is with horses from a family ranch in Oregon that I hope to visit again soon.

I am incredibly excited to be a part of this welcoming team and can't wait to explore my new home in Phoenix, my new home.

Through these continually challenging months that our nation and state are facing due to COVID‑19 and the brutal wildfire season, the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) continues to work hard on building and maintaining positive working relationships with the ranching community. While public health and safety measures are in place and the safety of our families and loved ones remain the top priority, the show must go on for AGFD and our ranching partners.

AGFD’s Landowner Relations Program (LRP) takes pride in the responsibility of fostering and maintaining positive relationships with private landowners and grazing allotment lessees throughout the state. This is accomplished through the cooperative planning of mutually beneficial “Cooperative Habitat Stewardship Agreements” and “Recreational Access Agreements.”

While habitat projects are still being completed with ranches around the state when circumstances allow, adaptations are made by working together to navigate current challenges. Rather than stalling progress due to the current restrictions and health concerns, we are taking this time to put our heads together and strategically plan projects for the future. Some of the most crucial planning steps can be taken from the safety of the home or home office. Such steps include working with your Regional LRP Specialists for information and assistance with technical advice, cost-share funding availability, proposal planning, compliance needs, and obtaining approvals for future projects on your ranches.

Examples of projects that LRP plans and provides cost-share funding for include, but are not limited to solar well conversions, water distribution pipelines, water catchments, wildlife-friendly livestock drinkers, dirt tank repairs and bentonite treatments, invasive brush treatments, forest treatments, wildlife-friendly fencing, spring developments, riparian exclosures with off-site water for livestock, and adaptable recreational access agreements for privately-owned parcels.

Sauce: 3/4 cup steak sauce 2 teaspoons minced garlic

COOK TIME: 30 minutes SERVINGS: 4 servings

1 pound beef Top Sirloin Steak boneless, cut 1 inch thick 1 pound red-skinned potatoes 2 medium yellow or zucchini squash

1. Cut potatoes into 1-1/2-inch pieces. Place in microwave-safe dish; cover with vented plastic wrap. Microwave on HIGH 6 to 8 minutes or until just tender, stirring once. Cool slightly.

2. Combine sauce ingredients in 1-cup glass measure. Microwave on HIGH 1-1/2 minutes, stirring once.

3. Cut squash lengthwise in half. Cut beef Top Sirloin Steak and squash into 1-1/4-inch pieces. Combine beef, squash, potatoes and 1/3 cup sauce in large bowl; toss.

Alternately thread beef and vegetables onto metal skewers.

4. Place kabobs on grid over medium, ash-covered coals. Grill, covered, 11 to 15 minutes (over medium heat on preheated gas grill, 13 to 16 minutes) for medium rare (145°F) to medium (160°F) doneness, turning once and brushing with remaining sauce during last 5 minutes.

Hello, my name is Jeff Homack. I am President of Bonita Ranch Inc., a commercial black Angus cattle ranch located on Mt. Graham near Willcox, AZ. I am a third-generation rancher, as my grandfather bought the ranch in 1972. I am happily married to my wife, Meaghan and we have an amazing son, Blake, who just turned five. My parents, Jeff and Carolyn Homack, raised me and my three younger siblings while managing the ranch. During my childhood, I spent time working with them, but actually went to school in Tucson.

After high school, I went on to get my degree in political science at the University of Arizona. After graduation, I took a job in Newport Beach, CA. After about 10 years, I moved home to help out on the ranch. Within a couple years, I was named President in 2008. In 2015, I was selected to be a member of Project CENTRL, Arizona’s premier rural leadership organization. Through Project CENTRL, I was able to refine my leadership skills. This has helped tremendously, as I am currently Vice President of Cochise Graham Cattle Growers’.

Regarding ranch management, I have helped improve the land, corrals, and quality of our cattle. I learned very early that being authentic in my approach to managing the ranch is critical to its success. In this business, reputation is everything. If you set the standard to raise the highest quality of beef in every aspect of your operation, that will shine through.

I have worked with many agencies such as the Natural Resources Conversation Service, Arizona Game and Fish, U.S. Forest Service, the Farm Service Agency and the Arizona Antelope Foundation. Working with these agencies has given us an opportunity to improve and conserve the land we are responsible for. We have improved fence lines, put in solar wells, and have cleared thousands of acres of mesquite. Clearing the land allows for native grasses to flourish that increases our ability to raise high quality cattle.

One of the most important lessons I learned early on is that this business is always evolving. Being a member of the Arizona Cattle Growers’ Association is critical to having access to experts as the industry changes. If I could give any advice to young ranchers, it would be to be a part of this organization, continue to expand your education by taking advantage of workshops and partnerships, and always be genuine in your business dealings and honest with your word.

Klondyke, Arizona - A Remote Place to Ranch in Graham County Written by Laura Flood

You cannot call Klondyke, Arizona a one-horse town. There could be more horses than people! It lies in the rugged desert mountains, West of Safford and deep in the Aravaipa Valley. Lori Sollers, a resident believes the population is around barely 50 people.

Miners founded the town in 1900 upon returning from the Klondike Gold Rush in Alaska. Lead and silver ore had to suffice rather than gold. This helped Klondyke keep its quiet seclusion, even after the notorious Power’s shootout of 1915.

Klondyke was believed to peak at 500 folks. The town had a post office in 1907, a saloon, church, and cemetery. However, half the residents departed during the Great Depression and the post office closed in 1955.

Contrary to this parched land's view, thunderstorms have trapped residents in high flood waters.

In 1998, the Holcomb’s, a couple from Nevada, operated a hunting ranch. The Holcomb's hunted mountain lions with hounds and guided guests on these excursions.

Beautiful dark skies highlight the bright stars and brilliant sunsets in the backdrop of the Galiuro Mountains to the Southeast and the Santa Teresa Mountains to the North.

Today, the Klondyke Horsehead Lodge operates from October to May and the Powers Cabin is open to tourists.

Perhaps a reader of the Arizona Cattlelog could solve the below mystery!

The mystery lies in the ranch name of the Klondyke branding (pictured below). The author of this article, Laura Flood, is pictured in the photographs. Trace mineral supplementation not only increases reproduction efficiency, if supplied during gestation, it is showing results of heavier animals at weaning.

The female is the factory on the ranch. She is responsible for raising a calf year after year, but this is not possible if she isn’t in proper nutritional health. “The impact of mineral supplementation is as or even more substantial than energy and protein for proper reproductive health,” says Reinaldo Cooke, Texas A&M Beef Cattle Production Specialist. “Minerals have a huge impact on reproduction.”

A lot of focus is put on making sure cows have the energy and protein requirements to fuel their systems.

But this often overlooks other essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals. A lack there can defeat the ability to strive for reproduction goals.

Lacking the required minerals in the diet can become a limiter in the effectiveness of the normal functioning of nearly all processes in the cow’s body. Mineral management is complex. “Each mineral is critical to the metabolic system of the animal and each mineral has its own importance, but each one also has its connection in working with other minerals,” Cooke told cattlemen during NCBA’s producer education webinar series focusing on mineral nutrition strategies.

“Many beef cattle systems rely on forages to provide nutrients, but the forages may not always be nutritionally complete.” Therefore, mineral supplementation programs need to be designed with these three factors in mind: the animal category, the stage of production, and the basal diet (the forage).

Cooke explains requirements are established for macrominerals and micro-minerals (trace minerals) as a starting point for beef cattle producers to follow. But many times, the microscope is not focused on minerals until something bad happens on the ranch.

“Minerals are the largest pound per pound expense in nutritional management and have a critical importance to reproduction. They are often the root cause of wrecks like open cows, embryonic death, delayed puberty, and reduced fertility,” explains Cooke. He reminds producers, if the cow is sick or dead ̶ it won’t breed.

Focus on trace minerals “Trace minerals, such as selenium, zinc and copper, have very specific roles in enzyme development impacting cell functions for the reproductive systems and are often the minerals that come to mind when reproductive issues surface,” says the beef cattle nutritionist.

The challenge is to determine what is the best package of minerals needed based on the forage diet the cows can access. While guidelines and recommendations determined from historical research have laid the foundation for beef cow nutrition, Cooke is seeing promising results from research on alternate forms of trace mineral supplementation. These sources include mineral supplementation from inorganic, organic, or injectable sources.

Inorganics include sulfates, oxides and chlorides and have a bioavailability between 40-50%. Organic sources include elements bound to simple amino acids or more complex organic structures. Organic trace minerals often have greater bioavailability than inorganics, are more stable in the digestive tract, and result in reduced losses due to antagonists, he explains.

Becoming more prevalent in the industry are sources that are injected directly into the body, resulting in rapid increase in trace mineral status and prompt metabolism.

“Using injectable minerals is an option if the cows are not in good shape and need to be brought back into better nutrition in a shorter time period,” says Cooke.

An example might be cows coming off pasture where access to supplementation was limited or sudden changes happened in the grass quality due to drought or other environmental factors. He cautions the use of injectables should not replace a good year-round supplementation program.

Cooke is excited about promising research results on fetal programming. This research is allowing for the opportunity to shift the focus further down the reproduction chain to learn about the impact nutritional practices during a cow’s gestation will have on her offspring. He reports supplementation of trace minerals during gestation is showing results of heavier animals at weaning, which in turn is allowing that animal to reach puberty sooner and enhancing the reproductive future of the cow herd.

Baseline requirements for mineral supplementation have guided the industry for many years, but researchers are not stopping there. “With the complexity associated with mineral supplementation and new sources becoming more accessible to the cow-calf producer, research may find that previous requirements will need to be shifted and adjusted to meet a cow’s nutritional needs,” says Cooke.

Residual Feed Intake as a Selection Tool for Cow Herd Efficiency Ashley Wright, University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Feed conversion ratio (FCR or F:G) is the traditional measure of feed efficiency and feedlot performance. This trait correlates with growth rate, and studies have shown that selecting cattle based on FCR also tends to increase mature cow sizes over time. Larger cows have higher energy requirements to maintain, which means increased feed costs and forage requirements for cows grazing rangelands.

Residual Feed Intake (RFI) is an alternative way to measure feed efficiency. It measures variations in feed intake beyond those needed for maintenance/production (i.e., growth, lactation). For example, if the average daily voluntary forage intake of two identical dry, open cows is measured over a week’s time, it is likely the animals will not eat the same amount of forage. Their individual intakes could vary by as much as ten or more pounds per day.

Given that all other production traits are equal, which cow would you rather have in your herd? RFI is a way to measure the intake differences without affecting other traits like growth, production, and mature size. If we look at growing cattle like steers, we can account for average daily gain (ADG) in the equation to compare with the intake of steers who may have different rates of growth.

When examining RFI scores, it is important to remember that cattle with a negative RFI score are considered efficient animals, which means they consumed less feed than expected based on size and performance. Cattle with a positive RFI score are considered inefficient animals because they consumed more feed than expected. If an animal has an RFI score of zero, it ate the exact amount of feed expected. The calculations used to determine RFI make this trait independent of growth and mature size. Using it to select cattle will not inadvertently select for larger animals (as selecting only on FCR will), but it does result in improvements in FCR. RFI is also moderately heritable.

It is becoming more common to see young bulls RFI tested before large bull sales, and many breeds now include an EPD (Expected Progeny Difference) for RFI. Finding an animal with a negative RFI (ex: -3.36) means that this animal should produce offspring that consumes on average 3.36 pounds less than the breed average.

RFI does come with a caveat. A few studies have demonstrated that RFI may negatively correlate with carcass marbling and leanness: more efficient animals may be leaner with less marbling than inefficient animals.

Additionally, more efficient heifers (low RFI) may not begin cycling as early as heifers with high RFI scores.

However, remember that all selection tools have downsides. Be aware of these potential pitfalls when selecting animals using RFI and be sure to consider other criteria such as genomic data, carcass EPDs, and carefully manage and cull replacement heifers to avoid cultivating negative traits in your herd.

Ranching isn’t a one size fits all approach, and neither is advocacy! While there are a variety of social media platforms each uniquely suited for connecting with consumers, we are entering a world of virtual education that provides the chance to create valuable learning experiences for youth online. As teachers scramble to generate content for their new-style classrooms, an opportunity to share agriculture’s story presents itself.

How can you get involved?

& A 1. Work with commodity organizations such as the Arizona Beef Council, Arizona Cattle Growers, or the Arizona Farm Bureau’s Ag in the Classroom program.

2. Share the resources they are already providing, develop your own, or reach out and let an organization profile you, your ranch, and your story in their educational resources.

3. Ever seen a ranching video and thought, “There are already so many great resources out there! Why do I need to tell my story?”

Remember, you bring something unique to the table. Each story is different, special, and provides a new perspective to those outside the agricultural community!

Host a Virtual Ag Tour of your ranch.

Read your favorite agriculturally accurate book as part of an Online Storytime and share it in an email to local teachers or on your favorite social media channel. Better yet, let one of the state commodity organizations share it for you!
