PAULA REDMAN, BS was born in Panama and grew up in Sonoita, AZ only fourteen miles from the U.S. Mexico border. She is a current student at the University of Arizona graduating in May 2021 with a second Bachelor’s degree to Physiology in Molecular and Cellular Biology. After two years working with her family manufacturing medical equipment, she is returning to pursue a career as an MD or DO. She enjoys training her new puppy and spending time with loved ones.

Paula’s destination is to support the relief of suffering and care for those who cannot be cured. Her interests surround pediatrics, neonatology and women’s health. Currently, she volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospital as a cuddler supporting neonatal development through talk and touch for positive long-term effects. Often babies in NICU are enduring withdraw symptoms from opioids in particular. Paula also has involvement in MOMs Clinic of Tucson which offers many services to provide care and support for mother’s and therein the baby. After the FRONTERA internship Paula has found a particular interest in directly serving the Tucson community and helping disparaged communities on the border.

THE EFFECTS OF CHRONIC AND ACUTE STRESS ON PREGNANCY: A LITERATURE REVIEW WITH EMPHASIS ON ADVERSE BIRTH OUTCOMES AS A MEASURE

Under the mentorship of Dr. Addis, although many projects occur at once, our review of the effects of stress on pregnancy is especially interesting considering challenges to the world this year. The purpose of the study is to qualify and quantify both chronic and acute stressors on pregnancy vitality as well as how these can exacerbate adverse birth outcomes such as low birth weight, miscarriage and preterm birth. The importance of this study is to establish resources directed at strengthening psychosocial interventions for women especially under abnormal amounts of stress to decrease negative outcomes.
