Leading figures from the business community in Ayrshire are to lead work to develop Scotland’s young workforce in the region.

The Developing the Young Workforce in Ayrshire regional group will aim to improve links between education and work in the three local authority area.

Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work, Skills and Training Roseanna Cunningham met key stakeholders at University of the West of Scotland’s Ayr campus to launch the group which is made up of representatives from the private and public sectors.

She said: “I am very pleased that the Developing the Young Workforce regional group for Ayrshire is up and running. While there is a considerable amount of good work happening in the area, I recognise that much more can be done to support young women and men towards sustainable and rewarding jobs.

“Employers will play a key role in the delivery of the aims of Scotland’s Youth Employment Strategy – a 40 per cent

reduction in youth unemployment by 2021. “We want an improved relationship between schools and employers that will allow all of our young people to progress, whatever their background or gender.”

Preparing students to face potential employers should be given the same level of priority as academic achievement in schools across the UK.” The DYWA group aims to ensure that young people develop the skills and positive attitudes required to take the next steps towards the world of work. It will work closely with the 26 secondary and associated 137 primary schools, 11 Additional Special Needs schools and all campuses of Ayrshire College.

Building on the foundations of well-established employer engagement at school and college level in Ayrshire, the group will ensure that all young people reach their full potential, nurture the confidence to develop career and vocational interests including entrepreneurship and ambition.

• HOLD LESSONS AROUND RECRUITMENT AND INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES. Most businesspeople think schools should teach students how to conduct themselves in an interview (78%), demonstrate transferable skills (54%) and communicate lessons learned from work experience (46%).

• PUT DIRECT CONTACT WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES AT THE HEART OF CAREERS GUIDANCE. Firms think careers advice should include workplace experiences (64%), encounters with employers and employees (62%), and link curriculum learning to careers (45%).

• THERE IS A MISMATCH BETWEEN EDUCATION LEADERS AND BUSINESSPEOPLE when it comes to careers guidance. Eight out of ten secondary schools believe they are effective at offering all types of careers guidance. However, all businesses surveyed thought careers guidance needs reform.

• BUSINESSES WANT CAREERS GUIDANCE REFORMS TO INCLUDE WORKPLACE EXPERIENCES (64%), encounters with employers and employees (62%) and curriculum learning linked to careers (45%).

• A SMALLER PROPORTION OF BUSINESSES THINK CAREERS GUIDANCE SHOULD BE TAILORED to the needs of each pupil (40%); be a structured programme, supported by the Senior Leadership Team (38%); or include personal guidance from a careers adviser (32%).

• JUST 24% OF BUSINESSES THINK SECONDARY SCHOOLS ARE EITHER VERY EFFECTIVE OR FAIRLY EFFECTIVE at preparing young people for work - with 69% of businesses saying secondary schools are not very effective or not effective at all at preparing young people for work. While 7% of firms don’t know.

• IN COMPARISON, 40% OF BUSINESSES THINK FURTHER EDUCATION COLLEGES ARE NOT VERY EFFECTIVE OR NOT EFFECTIVE AT ALL, and 41% think universities are not very effective or not effective at all at preparing young people for work. While these numbers are less than those for secondary schools, they are still high and concerning, given the skills gaps employers presently face.

SimpsInns is delighted to announce Gill Gallagher and Irene Leslie in their new Director positions within the popular Ayrshire hospitality and leisure group.

Gallagher, already a Director at SimpsInns, will take up her new role as Commercial Director from January 2016, while Leslie’s position as Operations Director begins with immediate effect at the award winning company.

Stephen said: “I was sold instantly on the idea. I’ve spent the last 19 years working in the commercial finance side of dairy businesses in the UK so I know how important it is to save money.”

“I have been involved with SimpsInns for more years than I care to remember and have been working with Malcolm and Karen since the beginning when they started out with the Old Loans Inn,” says Gallagher, who has been with SimpsInns for 17 years.

MENTORING WORKS FOR BIDWORKS Every start-up knows those early years are the toughest, and for consultants and freelancers in particular – it can be a lonely road.

Fortunately, Kelly Morris managed to navigate her way through those early challenges with support from Business Mentoring Scotland.

YOUR BUSINESS | WINTER 2015

How were you matched?

Kelly: I met Rhona Brown from BMS and explained that I needed someone direct and quite challenging. Someone that had been there and done it – with experience. Someone that I could respect.

Jim: Kelly and I first met in the Meridian in Ayr for coffee and an initial chat. We met a few times afterwards and then…

Kelly: …and then we had a break..

Jim: Well……yes we had a brief break. It was early days, you weren’t quite sure if you wanted to be freelance or a business and then at one point you said you were going to get a normal job!!!

Kelly: ..that’s right. It was a brief thought. Jim of course knew I would be back.

What kind of support did Jim offer?

Kelly: He was a sounding board. He mostly listened, and encouraged me to question myself. He provided clarity and perspective. He rarely gave specific advice and he never told me what to do…

Jim: Well that’s not what mentoring is about, it’s about supporting you to make your own decisions…..

Kelly: ….that’s true but often the sheer look of horror on your face said it all!

Jim: ..ah yes, well you see, Kelly is very much a ‘jump off a cliff and build the plane on the way down’ type of person.

In 2013 Kelly set up a freelance consultancy business, providing management consultancy support to small businesses.

In less than a year she was in high demand for her bid management and writing services and unsure which path to follow.

With their programme reaching its conclusion, Kelly Morris, and mentor, Jim Rae, shared how mentoring has worked for them.

Did you ever disagree?

Kelly: Yes…on price, every time we met.

Jim: Yes we will continue to debate that issue.

Kelly is an entrepreneur but she’s a ‘socialpreneur’. She’s got a lot of time for people and wants to create a business for others before herself.

So I’ve had to pull her back to the entrepreneur every now and then.

How has your business grown?

Kelly: In 12 months we’ve gone from one consultant to a full time team of four. We’ve rebranded to www.bidworks.co.uk and moved into larger office premises.

Would you recommend the programme?

Jim: Definitely - if you are willing to commit and want something from it.

Kelly: Absolutely. If it wasn’t for Jim, Bidworks wouldn’t be here today. It’s all about getting the match right though.

MICROTECH FLY AYRSHIRE FLAG ON TURKEY TRIP

Microtech Group Ltd were part of specially invited group of Scottish Businesses to visit Turkey in October to explore new market opportunities and build working relationships.

The committee, organised by Scottish Chambers of Commerce, in partnership with Turkish Airlines, took part in fact finding mission to an economy which has progressed rapidly to become one of the strongest developing markets in the world.

Scott McKie, IT Sales at Microtech, found the trip to be extremely beneficial, building new relationships and determining trade routes.

He said: “Having recently completed a fact finding trade mission to Istanbul, we now fully understand the strengths and opportunities existing in Turkey which complement their strategic plans for trade and industry growth.”

The delegation held meetings with Istanbul Chambers of Commerce and Istanbul Chamber of Industry. Both organisations act as a vocal and influential voice for business in the Turkish city.

Scott added: “We had the opportunity to

meet with the Turkish Chamber of Industry and discuss at length the five main industry sectors which Turkey are keen to cultivate through international trade.

“Having also gained the opportunity to speak about our own companies, we were able to forge direct links with the key players in both the public and private sectors and discuss our

complementing strategic and operational goals.

“As a technology and healthcare business, we were eager to learn more about the Turkish Chamber of Commerce’s goals for further developing their healthcare industry through partnering with respective Scottish enterprises.

“And having built relationships with some key industry specialists, we are now excited to attend the follow up meeting in December.”

Scottish Chambers of Commerce will be carrying out further trade missions spring next year.

INVESTMENT TO MAKE ‘GRID’ READY FOR WINTER WEATHER

Keeping the lights on in winter is a real challenge. Last year, emergency teams at SP Energy Networks responded to 5,500 incidents on the electricity network in Ayrshire.

33 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG! Troon’s shopping has changed over the years but retailer De Beaufort has established itself as one of the town’s well known and loved stores.

Co-owners Heather Barnes and Jenny Holford admit life in the town has changed over the years since they started out in 1982 but their ability to grow the business throughout that period has saw them develop to what they are today.

What began as a shoe shop in Troon branched out into boutiques in Ayr and Kilmarnock and back to Troon again where they’ve settled.

Heather explained: “We started the business in 1982 and it was a different place to what it is today. Jenny and I bought the wee shop in Church Street Troon and having been advised that the town needed a ladies shoe shop the decision was made and Dinky Doo was born.”

The pair have been in their current home in Church Street, Troon, for 24 years and paid tribute to their loyal customers, which spans generations.

Heather added: “We put all the eggs in one basket and condensed the business to the new shop where we have been for 24 years with the new name of De Beaufort.

“We were fortunate to have Moorcroft Pottery and Sheila Fleet jewellery among our brands. This went like a storm so much it was too small for all the boxes so we extended the floor space to present the two businesses together under one roof.

“The combined business has evolved over these years and we now have what some call Troon’s mini department store. So the moral of the story is keep moving and keep the business interesting.

However, none of this would be possible without our hard-working, loyal employees and so many lovely customers who now come in with their daughters and granddaughters.”

TAKING FIRST STEPS TOWARD WORK FUTURE POSSIBILITIES Loudoun Academy’s annual business seminar took place in September and involved all their S5 students.

The seminar gave pupils an insight into a variety of career opportunities within different sectors such as the STEM or creative industries and the hospitality sector.

The students identified what workshops they wished to attend they were interested in and spent the morning in the workshops after hearing from keynote speaker Stuart Dale MD of where2 and the Head Teacher, Linda McAulay Griffiths, who both gave an insight into their career, the opportunities and risks they had taken along the way.

Pupils from across North Ayrshire’s secondary schools had an excellent day’s input from local and national employers working in the Heritage, Cultural and Creative sectors.

On the day, pupils participated in a variety of hands-on workshops which saw them creating film, examining artworks and using computer game software to solve problems.

In a speed networking format, the extensive range of jobs that pupils were able to learn about included archaeology, architecture, heritage building crafts, museum curator, textile manufacturing, traditional storytelling, drama and a whole lot more.

The pupils overwhelmingly rated the event as “excellent, highly informative” and the main suggestion to improve future events was “more time.”

Skills shortages in the engineering and construction sectors are well publicised, but the importance of the heritage, cultural and creative industries to the Scottish economy cannot be ignored.

Providing opportunities for young people to improve their employability prospects is becoming a major pillar in the education curriculum.

Recently, Kyle Academy S3 Careers Fayre, organised by Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, was a great success and gave pupils the chance to speak first hand to employers preparing them for the world of work and the skills and attributes that employers are really looking for.

To implement the recommendations of the Developing Scotland Young Workforce report, the school is currently piloting the SQA Employability Award with S3 pupils, using innovative approaches to learning.

Part of this course involves researching employers and applying for a ‘mock job’ and the fayre offered ‘real-life experience’ giving pupils the opportunity to speak to different employers and learn as much as they could about their businesses. Pupils are now well informed about the companies that they will be applying for their “mock jobs” and hopefully prepare pupils for the world of work.

COURTNEY-ANNE’S GREAT WORK EXPERIENCE My name is Courtney-Anne and I am sixteen years old and I am blind. My work experience was with Ayrshire Children’s Services and I really enjoyed it.

I was working in the office with Hannah and Marianne who were really nice and showed me what to do. I answered the phone and transferred calls to other members of staff, made up leaflets and did some typing. I can type well as I can feel where the keys are because there are notches on the F and J keys and I have a good memory so I can remember where the other letters are.

Chloe Strang, Belmont Academy I went to Consolidated Carriers Ltd in Troon for my week’s work experience. It was a bit nerve-wracking going into the office for the first time but everyone was friendly and helped me out when I got stuck!

They showed me how to use their own system to check on customers’ orders, as well as the tracking system for lots of different suppliers. I did the scanning and entered delivery details onto customer jobs. It was interesting to see how the systems all worked and hear the different kinds of calls everyone was dealing with.

I felt part of the team and was really happy to have spent my work experience there – although the days are a bit longer than at school!

CUMNOCK ACADEMY FORGING TIES WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES

Darren McBlain, Cumnock Academy Cumnock Academy have developed a strong working relationship with local businesses, which has been extremely effective in providing supportive and relevant work experience placements for our young people.

To date our young people have participated in a variety of very worthwhile work experience placements ranging from local garages, hairdressers, hotels, nurseries, schools and local sports facilities. Some of our placements have been so successful that they are now built into individual curricular provision for our learners and will continue throughout the session.

Our young people are much more independent and confident to try new experiences and many of them are now able to travel independently to their placements. Young people have been afforded opportunities to experience learning out with the classroom and develop relationships with new people.

Over 4,200 homes and businesses across Ayrshire will be next to benefit from the arrival of high-speed fibre broadband – in the latest phase of the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme, as it starts to reach more rural and remote areas.

The project is now reaching into more local areas, with places including Fairlie, Turnberry, Uplawmoor, West Kilbride, Moscow, Torranyard and Kirkoswald all set to receive fibre broadband for the first time, with first connections expected to go live in spring 2016.

Fibre broadband enables multiple users in a home or business to access the internet, download and share large files at the same time. As the higher speeds become available, anyone interested in signing up for fibre-based services should contact their broadband service provider.

Sara Budge, Programme Director for Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband, said: “It is great to see smaller communities starting to benefit from our programme, while announcing that more exchanges will be included.”

The Digital Scotland rollout consists of two projects. One is led by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) for its region and the other covers the rest of Scotland.

MODERN APPRENTICES‘SIGN’UP WITH OWEN KERR One of Ayrshire’s biggest, fastest and best sign makers, Owen Kerr Signs, have been expanding and developing their organisation recently with three new members of staff.

The team have brought in Stephanie Alexander, Liam Kerr and Chris Leith on modern apprenticeships and are already benefitting from the youthful energy and vibrancy they have brought to the business.

All three will be working toward their Modern Apprenticeship – Stephanie in Business Administration, Liam and Chris in sign making.

The new additions complete a busy period of expansion within the company as it has expanded with the recent purchase of an additional manufacturing facility in York Street, Ayr, and a new environmentally friendly HP Latex 360 Wall Art printer, which specialises in the production of digital wallpaper.

Managing Director, Owen Kerr, added: “It is an exciting time here at Owen Kerr Signs, with new equipment, new premises and new staff! I am particularly excited about our new HP Wallart printing system which allows our clients to design their own digital wallpaper which can then be uploaded directly to our system for production. It can be used in board rooms, reception areas and even customers own homes to add the personal touch to wall decoration.”

"Investing in our staff, IT and the latest BIM (Building Information Management) technology has been essential, however, attaining ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and CHAS accreditation has really allowed us to

flourish as a business. We have consistently achieved a year on year customer satisfaction rating in excess of 96% from Premier Inn which is a result of our investment and the hard work of our team."

Steve added: "We have seen turnover and profits rise year on year since 2008 and are currently on target to more than exceed this year’s growth predictions. Our next big challenge is to find new premises to accommodate our growing team!"
