Ayesa provided temporary and permanent works design for the Wilton tunnel portal — the northern entry to a 38 km polyhalite transport tunnel in North Yorkshire. Our scope included retaining walls, tension piles, propping, capping beams, drainage systems, and ground anchors. When dry ground conditions were confirmed, we revised the design to use contiguous piles, eliminating primary piles — saving time, reducing materials, and accelerating the programme in close coordination with the contractor.
• Multidisciplinary Expertise
We combine civil, structural, geotechnical, and marine engineering to deliver fully coordinated, safety-led designs — all under one consulting firm.
• Buildability and Sequencing Insight
Our team understands construction from the ground up. We design practical, buildable solutions that simplify logistics and improve programme delivery.
• Smart Interfacing with Permanent Works
As permanent works designers too, we anticipate clashes, reduce rework, and streamline handovers between temporary and permanent systems.
• Value Engineering
We regularly identify smarter, leaner design alternatives — helping contractors reduce cost, risk, and time on site without compromising safety.
• Health and Safety is embedded into every stage of our engineering service provision
We operate a certified ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management System, and our teams follow rigorous internal governance protocols to ensure the highest safety standards are consistently met across all projects in the UK. We fully align with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) and regularly support clients in fulfilling their legal duties under the regulations, including taking on the role of Principal Designer. In temporary works, where site safety and structural stability are especially critical, our designs prioritise safe buildability, sequencing, and coordination with all duty holders.
• Proven Track Record across Tier ones and Complex major projects
Ranked #11 in the Geoplus.co.uk Top 50 Geotechnical Consultants, we’ve delivered successful temporary works on major projects like the M3/M4 Smart Motorways, A9 Dualling, A465 Heads of the Valleys, and N5 Turlough and major civil infra structure in the UK and Ireland including Stepney Crossrail and the Silvertown Tunnel.
• Award-winning Geotechnics & Multdisciplinary Projects
Ayesa and its partners have received more than 40 national and international awards and commendations across the UK, Ireland, and globally since 2021—celebrating engineering excellence in water, energy, transport, healthcare, conservation, geotechnics, and iconic architecture, with standout wins including the RIAI Public Buildings Award, the Downes Medal, BCIA’s Tunnelling Project of the Year, and temporary works initiative of the year through the Riverlinx CJV.

Temporary works are fundamental to the successful delivery of transportation infrastructure. From bridge construction and motorway upgrades to rail interfaces and complex junctions, temporary works provide the structural stability and access required to safely build permanent assets — often in live, high-risk environments.
At Ayesa, we bring specialist expertise in designing and coordinating temporary works. Our team supports Tier 1 contractors, joint ventures, and transport authorities across the UK and Ireland with safe, pragmatic, and buildable solutions tailored to each site’s constraints and programme.
Our role typically begins early — identifying risks and requirements, coordinating with permanent works designers, and optimising sequencing. Through intelligent temporary works design, we help reduce disruption, shorten construction timescales, and deliver significant value on complex infrastructure schemes.
• Temporary structural support for bridge beams, decks, abutments, and retaining walls
• Complex embankment staging and cut/fill sequencing
• Falsework and formwork for highway structures and parapets
• Temporary river or road crossings and haul routes
• Traffic diversions and live carriageway support
• Crane and piling platforms for constrained sites
• Dewatering strategies for cuttings and underpasses
• Utility protection and diversions during phased works
• Smart motorway construction staging and interface management
• Full CDM 2015 alignment and support for Principal Designer role
Ayesa provides temporary works solutions to safely manage utility diversions during infrastructure construction. Our designs support the protection, relocation, or over-pumping of live services — including water, gas, electricity, telecoms, and drainage — while enabling excavations, road realignments, and structural works to proceed. We design trench supports, temporary bridges, haul road crossings, and protection measures to ensure service continuity, minimise disruption, and meet safety and regulatory requirements. Our expertise ensures utility diversions are well-integrated into the overall construction sequence and delivered with minimal risk to programme.
Safety is critical and TW must experience and foresight.
As part of the upgrade to the A465 Heads of the Valleys appointed by Costain to design temporary works that steep, hilly terrain. Our team designed soil nails and temporary beneath the existing road, ensuring safety during construction.

Deep excavations present some of the most technically complex and risk-sensitive challenges in construction — particularly in urban, constrained, or geologically variable environments. At Ayesa, we provide robust and engineered temporary works solutions to enable deep basements, shafts, underpasses, and drainage works to proceed safely and efficiently. Our engineers have extensive experience designing temporary retention systems for deep excavations in both soil and rock. Each excavation is unique — shaped by depth, ground conditions, adjacent structures, site access, and tolerable movements. We adopt an integrated geotechnical and structural approach, using advanced soil-structure interaction modelling to assess and mitigate risks, protect surrounding assets, and optimise construction staging.
Experience Includes:
• Excavation support for rail and metro shafts
• Temporary works for underground stations and basements
• Diaphragm walls, secant, sheet, and king post systems
• Slope stabilisation and temporary faces
• Impact assessment and real-time monitoring
• Temporary retaining wall design
• Shaft and tunnel access support
• Basement excavation staging
• Groundwater control and dewatering
• Soil nails, anchors, struts and propping
• Structural impact assessment and instrumentation planning
• Geotechnical modelling (PLAXIS, FLAC, MIDAS)
Temporary works are an essential part of the construction process, undertaken before permanent construction can begin. The efficient design and integration of temporary works solutions have the potential to deliver substantial cost and programme savings for large building projects.
• Ayesa engineers work closely with building contractors to understand their preferred construction techniques and to develop temporary works solutions that fit hand-in-hand with these methodologies. We regularly suggest and design alternative permanent works that, when integrated with smart temporary works, streamline the overall construction project.
• As well as temporary structural support, Ayesa is experienced in providing earthworks support, crane and piling platforms, working platforms, temporary traffic diversions, utility diversions, environmental plans, dewatering or other bespoke requirements.
• With our specialist skills in geotechnics, structural and civil engineering, our consultants can manage the entire building construction process from bespoke temporary works to permanent works supervision.
• We combine our seasoned construction experience withrigorous design processes to prioritise safety.
• Our temporary works designs can often provide a competitive advantage for our clients by developing intelligent solutions.
22 Bishopsgate: Originally conceived as The Pinnacle, construction of this London skyscraper halted in 2012, leaving a partially built basement and core. When the scheme was later revived and redesigned as 22 Bishopsgate, a 62-storey commercial tower, Ayesa was commissioned to design the temporary core support system.
Working within the constraints of the existing structure, we developed a bespoke transfer solution using five retained steel columns to safely support the new core during construction. Our team designed and coordinated a complex grid of temporary walls between the basement and ground floor, all while demolition works were ongoing.
Outcome: Our solution enabled the new core construction to begin six months earlier, accelerating the programme and generating significant value for the project team.
Ayesa played a vital role as one of the principal underground structural designers for the £2 billion Silvertown Tunnel in London, delivered by Riverlinx CJV for Transport for London
