Reaching new markets beyond security

It has been a very productive summer and early autumn with a number of exciting product and solution announcements.

We have entered the retail store sound system market, launching an all-in-one network speaker system, AXIS C1004-E and AXIS C2005. We’ve released a new laser focus technology in our latest PTZ dome camera and last, but certainly not least, we announced the first camera that combines both Canon’s advanced image technology and Axis’ security platform. These milestones demonstrate Axis’ ongoing commitment to technological development, continually entering new segments in its mission to innovate for a safer and more secure world.

Additionally, there have been three new acquisitions in recent months, including analytics company Cognimatics, the world’s number one IP intercom company 2N, and intelligent transport solution company Citilog. The security industry is growing at a rapid pace, with demands in different vertical segments often requiring sophisticated and specialised technology. By working with such companies, we believe we are reaching far beyond our core competences of traditional security capabilities, broadening and strengthening our solution offering. Cognimatics, 2N and Citilog are all supporting our ambition to contribute to a smarter and increasingly intelligent world.

At Axis, alongside our partners and new business acquisitions, we have always prided ourselves on our commitment to ensuring all of our business is conducted in a responsible, transparent and trustworthy manner.

In light of recent news stories looking at heightened security concerns surrounding network cameras, we feel it is clear that as the availability and access to network devices continues to increase, so does the potential exposure to cyber threats.

To deal with the increasing variety and volume of security risks businesses are now facing, security system users will need to stay on top of updates from their suppliers and take heed of best practices for preventing attacks through network camera-based systems. In order to ensure business’ network infrastructures are secure, it is critical to undertake a risk assessment to reduce the attack surface area and implement security polices in the design and implementation of a network video system.

With R&D based at our headquarters in Sweden, Axis follows industry best practices in managing and responding to security vulnerabilities within products to minimise customers’ exposure to cyber risks. We continually update cameras’ firmware with new features, bug fixes and security patches to help address the increasing amount of security risks.

Furthermore, Axis, our partners and new acquisitions adhere to the UN Global Compact guidelines as well as export rules and regulations. We also follow a Business Ethics Policy and have a Business Ethics Council. Axis has zero tolerance for corruption and as a result has initiated an extensive programme in order to fight corruption, bribery and conflicts of interest. The programme includes a new anti-corruption policy, an educational programme for all employees and an amendment to the Standard Distribution Agreement for all distributors.

Axis enters retail store sound system market with smart network loudspeakers Axis has entered the retail store sound system market with smart sound systems. ”Traditional retail store sound systems typically consist of a number of different analog components and specific audio knowledge is required to be able to properly install and fine tune these systems.

These new products are a complete audio system and you do not need any audio knowledge or extra hardware to use them. They are preconfigured for use right out-of-the-box”, says Håkan Hansson, Global Product Manager Audio, Axis Communications.

Axis’ all-in-one speaker system offers amplifier, mixer, digital signal processor, streaming functionality, microphone, power supply and loudspeaker. With Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, only a single network cable is needed to provide both power and data to each unit.

The units can be combined into a flexible and scalable system and it is easy to add or remove speakers in an instant. Managing the loudspeakers is versatile, and it is possible to address and control each unit individually or make a unified command for several units.

By creating zones to address a number of loudspeakers it is possible to direct different background music, live or prerecorded announcements or control and change the volume for each unit individually and parallel.

AXIS C1004-E and AXIS C2005 are high sensitivity full range loudspeakers offering high quality background music playback and clear speech announcements, possible to schedule to meet any needs.

Background music can be played via the preinstalled AXIS Audio Player application.

You can create and schedule your own MP3 playlists either from the speakers offline playlist (SD card) or from audio streaming services.

Announcements can be scheduled from pre-recorded audio files or triggered by an event captured by a surveillance camera. Further, the speakers come with built in SIP-support which makes it easy to integrate them with Voice over IP telephone systems, for example for live voice announcements.

Designed for professional use, the sound systems are smart devices and with the inbuilt microphone, it is possible for the speakers to verify its functionality.

This gives operators the peace of mind that background music or announcements are actually heard and that the system deliver quality music around the clock.

AXIS C1004-E is splash proof and comes in black and white.

The open ACAP platform and VAPIX protocol makes the products future-proof and ready for additional music streaming solution.

Laser focus technology for PTZ surveillance cameras AXIS Q6155-E PTZ Dome Network Camera with laser focus, is offering much faster and more accurate autofocus even in the most challenging lighting conditions.

The new laser focus technology combined with the high image quality that AXIS Q6155-E offers, is valuable in situations when people or objects need to be identified quickly and precisely.

This high-end camera brings sharp images even when weather or lighting conditions are challenging thanks to its laser focus, a new and improved sensor, Axis’ Lightfinder technology and Axis’ Speed Dry function.

“Autofocus is one of the biggest challenges for conventional PTZ cameras today. When the lighting conditions are difficult - such as for example at dusk or dawn - the camera takes longer to autofocus” says Kent Fransson, Global Product Manager, Axis Communications. “Our new laser focus technology allows the camera to measure the distance to objects no matter what the lighting conditions are. This measurement is also much more exact and it is taken in an instant. This means the camera is always focusing optimally, providing clear images at all times.”

AXIS Q6155-E is ideal for city and perimeter surveillance, critical infrastructure, transportation, education, industrial and government installations. Its sleek design, compact size and re-paintable casing allows the camera to blend in with its surroundings. It offers quick and precise pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) and high scene fidelity at all angles of view.

AXIS Q6155-E features Sharpdome, a technology which allows for monitoring of objects as much as 20° above the camera horizon. The camera offers HDTV 1080p resolution and 30x optical zoom.

Axis’ Zipstream technology lowers bandwidth and storage requirements while keeping necessary forensic details.

Durable fixed domes, including stainless steel models, exceptional light sensitivity and Wide Dynamic Range - Forensic Capture We are now expanding and updating our AXIS Q35 Network Camera Series with models based on the latest image sensor technology and enhanced processing including Lightfinder technology, resulting in exceptional light sensitivity and Wide Dynamic Range - Forensic Capture. Moreover, two new models with marine-grade, electropolished and coated stainless steel casing and nylon transparent dome are offered to withstand the corrosive effect of seawater and chemicals.

AXIS Q3505-V/-VE/-SVE Mk II models provide HDTV 1080p video at 30 fps with WDR, and 1080p at up to 60 fps or 720p at up to 120 fps with WDR disabled. They are available with wide or telephoto lens. AXIS Q3504-V/-VE cameras provide HDTV 720p at 30 fps with WDR, and up to 120 fps with WDR disabled. All new AXIS Q35 models offer remote zoom and focus capabilities as well as P-Iris control ensuring optimal depth of field, resolution, image contrast and clarity.

All-in-one wireless video surveillance solution for small businesses Soon available is an all-in-one wireless video surveillance solution for small businesses that want to monitor indoor premises such as a retail store or office. One week of video recordings are stored on-camera, eliminating recurring costs. The recordings are accessible by PC or mobile device using the free AXIS Companion video management software. Axis Secure Remote Access removes the need for manual router configuration and ensures a secure encrypted connection.

“With our all-in-one wireless video surveillance solution for small businesses we respond to strong market demand for an easy to set up and manage security camera system that comes with the quality and reliability that is expected from Axis as the market leader. Designed for surveillance cameras and with increased durability and endurance, AXIS Companion Card 64 GB features health-monitoring capabilities enabling the SD card to detect and report its current status so that any maintenance, such as replacing the card, can be planned ahead.

Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology allows the cameras to adapt to highly variable lighting conditions such as when sunlight shines through a window and creates both very bright areas as well as dark shadow areas.

AXIS Companion Dome WV is a palmsized dome network camera for discreet ceiling or wall mounting. It features HDMI output for connecting a screen for live viewing. This can be used for example in retail stores to discourage shoplifting.

AXIS Companion Cube LW is a handy cube network camera that can be flexibly placed and directed. It offers a 110o horizontal field of view for full coverage of small rooms. It can be corner-mounted, wall-mounted or positioned with a table stand. A motion sensor and infrared LED illumination enable video surveillance monitoring even in the dark. An integrated microphone and speaker allow for audio recording and speaking to the scene.

New series of cost-efficient HD fixed domes with built-in infrared illumination The new AXIS M31 Series consisting of three indoor and three outdoor models. The new compact network cameras adapt automatically to changing light conditions, with builtin infrared (IR) illumination allowing them to capture images even in complete darkness. in with their environment and are ideally suited for video surveillance applications in hotels, restaurants, retail shops, offices and schools.

“We see a strong market demand for small and affordable fixed domes with built-in IR illumination. AXIS M31 Series has a stylish and compact flat-faced design that suppresses reflections from the IR illumination.

The casing is optionally available in black, and can be easily repainted for the camera to blend in with any environment. An integrated microSDXC memory card slot enables edge storage applications.

The series offers great flexibility in field of view and resolution; the indoor AXIS M3106-L and outdoor AXIS M3106-LVE provide a wide field of view of 130° in 4-megapixel resolution; the indoor AXIS M3105-L and outdoor AXIS M3105-LVE give HDTV 1080p video with a field of view of 115°; and the HDTV 720p cameras AXIS M3104-L and AXIS M3104-LVE provide a field of view of 80°.

The focus recall feature, available in AXIS Q6052/-E and AXIS Q6054/-E, provides instant focus in predefined areas, making it easier to use a PTZ camera optimally in challenging light conditions.

With focus recall, there is no need to manually focus or wait for the autofocus to adjust, a step that can take several seconds.

Focus recall is especially beneficial in scenes with low contrast and pointshaped light sources, for example, strong headlights from oncoming traffic. It is also useful in scenarios that require a lot of manual operation using a joystick.

The new cameras are the first cameras in AXIS Q60 Series to offer Zipstream, a H.264 compatible compression technology that reduces bandwidth and storage requirements by up to 50% even during camera movements.

Zipstream provides control over bandwidth peaks, allows users to preserve more forensic detail where needed and lowers installation and maintenance costs significantly.

AXIS Q6055/-E comes with several builtin Axis video analytic applications for greater efficiency or added business value, enabling time and cost reduction for the customer.

Detection of security incidents through automatic monitoring of the video feed makes it possible to prevent crime, and integration of video data into other systems contributes to business insights. AXIS Q1615-E Mk II offers three Scene Profiles to choose between: Forensic profile for general surveillance and capturing details. Live profile for more vivid colors and higher contrast, or Traffic Overview profile optimized for traffic surveillance.

For each profile, the camera automatically optimizes exposure time, white balance, aperture, sharpness, contrast and noise for each camera in your surveillance solution to suit specific use scenarios. For instance, you can set up the Traffic Overview profile with the specific height of the camera, the average speed of passing vehicles and the distance to the road and vehicles. Total Cost of Ownership – are you really getting the best deal?

Steven Kenny, Axis Communications, discusses why Total Cost of Ownership analysis will help businesses make intelligent procurement decisions.

Steven Kenny: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/steven-kenny-24461825 A common misconception when purchasing almost any business solution is that the upfront cost will make up the sole, or at least a large majority, of the total outgoings for a project. This is a dangerous way to approach a procurement decision, often leading to issues such as unexpected operating fees, product failure and worst of all, downtime. For this reason, when calculating the total cost of a project or assessing a tender, it’s extremely important that businesses analyse the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to help make the most informed purchasing decision.

In specific regards to network video, we define TCO as ‘a selection of relevant costs associated with a video surveillance solution through its complete lifecycle’.

The important message here is this is in reference to the complete lifecycle, including the whole cost of acquisition, the entire operating cost and the total decommissioning cost.

To understand the importance of TCO as a consideration within network video procurement, we developed an example large-scale city surveillance project, comprising of 1,500 outdoor cameras and an enterprise-class video management, network and storage solution. Our analysis discovered that 67 per cent of the total cost came in the acquisition phase, 31 per cent during operations and 2 per cent in the decommissioning stage.

Zipstream: less is more The surveillance industry is constantly under pressure to capture more, and capture it in more detail and better quality than ever before. While the quality of camera resolution has advanced at a remarkable pace, businesses have struggled to cope with the associated large amounts of data storage requirements.

As a leader in innovation for the sector, Axis released its very own compression

technology, lowering bandwidth and storage requirements by an average of 50 per cent for a typical 24/7 surveillance use case.

In Axis’ original city surveillance project TCO estimations did not include the use of Zipstream, but the effect of utilising this within the project shows significant cost savings during the operational stage, a 3 per cent reduction. With the projected cost for large installations of this nature standing at $17,000,000, that 3 per cent holds some weight, equating to a saving of $450,000, or $300 per camera.

Maintenance, beyond system installation Costs that can’t afford to be overlooked are those associated with maintenance and repair. Playing a significant role within the operational stage of any TCO analysis, these totalled 5 per cent, or $800,000 in our example project. Of course, this figure is totally dependent on the quality of the solution in place. The importance of product reliability is often underestimated when maintenance costs are taken into consideration, leading to unexpected outlay or an even more expensive burden – system downtime.

Axis products are designed for performance and reliability, enduring a rigorous testing process to ensure they can withstand extreme conditions. The quality of the solution was shown to have a significant impact on the project’s TCO. If failure rates were increased by a factor of four within the city surveillance project, for example, the cost of system failure would jump from 5 per cent to 13 per cent; $800,000 to $2,300,000.

Zipstream in action - Cutting costs without losing forensic value Wayne Davis, Sales Engineer, Axis Communications, highlights three scenarios whereby utilising Zipstream technology can provide significant cost savings.

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) studies have concluded that storage can contribute up to 25 per cent of an initial investment. For this reason, technical solutions that reduce storage needs will have a great impact on the total cost of a system.

That is why Axis’ Zipstream technology, with the ability to reduce storage requirements by an average of 50 per cent or more, will be so important to businesses going forward. This significant reduction can be achieved while maintaining the forensic quality of a video, something we know is crucial to the market. With some network camera installations costing hundreds of thousands of pounds, the potential monetary savings are immense.

Protecting customers and staff in the retail sphere In order to highlight the potential cost savings, we’ve compiled three different scenarios, based on real customer examples, showcasing Zipstream in action for companies of differing sizes. The first scenario is a small system with eight entrylevel cameras installed in a retail store.

Protecting people, both customers and employees, is an essential part of every retail business, especially when stores have to open late and handle valuable goods.

Profitable stores keep people walking in, and stop goods from ‘walking out’. In this instance, the owner is not likely to actively utilise the system on a daily basis, instead viewing recordings in case of an incident.

The ability to not only detect, but also to identify intruders and supply authorities with solid forensic evidence is vital.

The eight cameras have a total storage requirement of 4.04 terabytes (TB), at a cost of $900.

The potential cost savings when utilising Zipstream technology amounts to $450, or $56 per camera. This level of saving could allow the retailer to add more cameras to the system for additional intelligence, such as eye-level identification at a store entrance, or invest in other vital business resources.

Securing the borders of a manufacturing facility The second scenario is a mid-size system with 34 network cameras installed at a manufacturing facility. This scenario represents a typical mid-size business with a need for active surveillance. At this type of facility, the loss of material or other disturbances in the production process could represent huge losses, meaning monitoring the direct surroundings is vital to detect abnormalities early.

The 34 cameras have a total storage requirement of 31.8 TB, bringing the overall storage cost to $10,571. With an estimated Zipstream reduction of stored data of 50 per cent, this amounts to a saving of $5,044, or $148 per camera. A saving of this size could allow a manufacturer to expand its video surveillance system to include access control, therefore not only monitoring activities, but directly controlling who has access to the premises.

Keeping the lights on through intelligent security The final scenario is a large system with 185 high-end cameras installed in and around a power plant. Maintaining a large or complex site requires an intelligent security solution that is customised to meet business and operational needs.

Responsibility for a critical facility means being prepared for a range of threats, from incidents of theft, to terrorism and natural disasters, all of which can cause process disruption and safety hazards. Without electricity, society immediately comes to a standstill.

The cameras in this large installation have a total storage requirement of 230 TB, with the overall storage cost $68,595. An estimated Zipstream reduction of stored data by 50 per cent amounts to total savings of $29,862, or $161 per camera.

In an installation of this size, the cost savings are substantial. These could be used to add thermal cameras that create images based on the heat radiating from any object, vehicle or person even if they are camouflaged. This would enable operators to detect and act on suspicious activity even faster than before.

The three scenarios highlight how cost savings increase rapidly in line with the increased need for storage – and the associated efficiencies that can be made.

Zipstream technology was introduced in 2015 and a new improved version was launched in June 2016, highlighting Axis’ ongoing efforts to innovate in the push to contribute to a smarter and safer world.

Lars Hansson: https://se.linkedin.com/in/lars-hansson-3b123b52/en Traditionally, perimeter protection measures relied on technologies such as short distance radar, lasers, ground sensors, motion sensors or motion-sensitive fence wires.

While these technologies all perform well, they have obvious and significant limitations: they do not let the operator distinguish between real and false alarms and they provide limited detail. For every alert triggered, a person has to inspect the area in question to confirm if there is an actual breach of the perimeter, and a threat to be dealt with. This is not only time consuming, but frequent false alarms – for instance, set off by a passing animal – can eventually lead to more lax security checks.

Challenges and solutions The main objective of any perimeter protection system is to detect a real threat or intrusion at the earliest possible stage – and to do this 24/7. However, the areas that need to be monitored can be vast – rail yards, bus depots, car parks, harbors or the area surrounding an industrial site – and their sheer size can pose significant challenges.

Lighting conditions can be a problem, especially at nighttime if there is little or no electric light available.

The combination of thermal cameras with intelligent video applications and pan/ tilt/zoom dome camera has proven very effective in handling the protection of these sites in diverse environments.

Working in parallel, the thermal camera and the PTZ form an extremely secure and accurate protection mechanism. To ensure uninterrupted recording and as much functionality as possible, each camera is independent and is able to provide information as long as it is connected to the IP infrastructure.

In case of communication failure, the cameras can record onto an embedded SD card for future analysis. The cameras can be set up to automatically trigger a response, such as floodlight or sirens, or network horn speakers that can be used to issue verbal warnings.

The beauty of IP-based technologies is that they can be integrated with each other, and with existing security systems.

Future-proof, flexible and fully scalable, network cameras in combination with other sensor systems and technologies such as fence or buried cable detection can cater to the most complex of setups, such as critical infrastructure protection, where the security solution has to be able to effectively manage multiple alarms at once.

Sustainability increasingly important when choosing security solutions Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important parameter when companies choose a security system supplier. This includes, amongst others, the global engineering company Vaisala, which develops and manufactures electronic measuring instruments and systems.

Greater understanding and increased awareness amongst consumers has helped sustainability in the supply chain to move higher up the management agenda.

Viewed from a sustainability perspective, it is also important that the suppliers manufacture high-quality products with low risk.

Increased demands on suppliers Vaisala demands suppliers match the same focus on quality and sustainable production as it does itself. Before Vaisala starts dealing with a new supplier, it must undergo a process answering questions on their environmental commitments, labour legislation, health and safety, human rights, regulatory compliance and management of its own supply chain. To be able to conduct business with Vaisala, all of its suppliers must also sign the company’s Supplier Code of Conduct.

In the same way as with an increasing number of Axis’s customers, Vaisala conducts stringent audits of its suppliers.

Reduced environmental impact and increased societal benefit from Vaisala products Vaisala’s technology and solutions enable customers to reduce their environmental impact and increase their benefit to society. One example is the weather station used by authorities in the USA and UK, where customers can have Axis cameras as part of their solution. National road authorities have been able to reduce the volume of defrosting material by up to 50 percent, while the number of road accidents has decreased by as much as 20 percent.

In the latest Vaisala Road Weather Station RWS200 report, the AXIS Q6042 E PTZ Network Dome Camera and AXIS Q6032-E Network Dome Camera have been offered to customers.

Vaisala’s R&D chooses Axis network cameras because Axis is a major and reliable supplier and because the cameras have good functionality, are highly weather resistant, have a long service life, are easy to configure and have good lighting performance.

Sustainability is an integrated part of Axis’ operations For Axis, sustainability is an important and integrated part of its operations. Axis also takes account of sustainability in all business processes throughout the value chain.

Axis’ products and solutions are at the cutting edge of technology, while the environmental impact from the company’s operations, products and solutions are minimised. Axis has a long-term goal of offering halogen-free products, including chlorine, which is primarily found in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorinated flame retardants, as well as bromine, which is found in brominated flame retardants.

The efforts to phase out PVC from the products has been successful. Around 70 per cent of Axis’ network cameras and encoders are PVC-free as of 2015.

In addition to following legislation and guiding principles, such as the EU’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive and the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals (REACH) law, Axis restricts the use of other substances and materials, such as organotin compounds.

Axis also strives for increased use of recovered materials in the products, such as replacing virgin plastic with recycled plastic. Approximately 95 per cent of materials in Axis products are recyclable or combustible in accordance with Swedish recycling standards. The packaging material is composed of recycled material to a certain extent.

Axis also works systematically to further improve energy efficiency, whilst also ensuring the products have optimal functionality.

More eyes, greater intelligence: Twickenham Stadium controls perimeter beyond match day Axis’ innovative Zipstream technology helps reduce bandwidth and storage requirements despite increasing camera locations.

Twickenham Stadium, the home of England Rugby and the second largest stadium in the UK, is now utilising Axis technology to future-proof its security processes and integrate analytics into its day-to-day surveillance activities. The stadium was set to host many high-profile matches during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and the operations team wanted to futureproof its security practices and modernise its technology to ensure match goers and venue workers were safe during the event.

Axis’ partner Vindex Systems, a market leading systems integrator, recommended Axis’ innovative technology.

To secure the stadium’s vast perimeter 24/7, Twickenham Stadium chose 20 AXIS P1425-LE Network Cameras with infrared capabilities. Utilising Digital Barrier analytics, the cameras have been strategically placed around the stadium’s perimeter, automatically alerting the operations team if an intruder attempts to climb the fence. In addition, 18 AXIS M3007-PV Network Cameras have been integrated inside the stadium to monitor daily activities, such as conferences and maintenance work.

A further 33 AXIS Q6045-E Network Cameras have been deployed to monitor activity in the concourse, lift lobbies and key public areas.

All of the legacy analogue cameras communicate via six AXIS Q7436 Video Encoder Blades and a Genetec VMS, improving the image quality of the analogue cameras already in use.

Axis’ innovative Zipstream technology, which lowers bandwidth and storage requirements by an average of 50 per cent or more, is helping the operations team cope with the increased data demands.

More eyes, greater intelligence, enhanced security Before the modernisation, Twickenham Stadium utilised analogue CCTV equipment without analytic capabilities.

Vindex Systems steered the operations team through a smooth regeneration of its equipment, upgrading to network camera technology from Axis. This led to a proliferation of cameras, ensuring enhanced visibility during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and maintaining this beyond match day for greater health and safety and 24/7 border surveillance, guaranteeing no unauthorised access to the venue.

“The aim of the installation was not only to update what we already had, but to push our security processes way beyond what was available before,” said Phil Parker, Venue Operations Manager at Twickenham Stadium. “The project wasn’t just about replacing existing locations, but increasing the amount of coverage, and consistency of that coverage, throughout the stadium.

We’ve added 40 new locations, the majority of which were AXIS P1425-LE cameras including built-in Digital Barrier analytics.

This means if a person attempts to climb a fence and crosses an invisible barrier, an alert is instantly sent to the team advising of a breach, helping to swiftly resolve incidents.”

Shifting from reactive surveillance to proactive intelligence There is a vast amount of movement both inside and outside Twickenham Stadium - not only on a match day. A constant stream of contractors visits the site; corporate events take place on a regular basis; and members of the public can often be seen on stadium tours. Being alert to the security and health & safety issues surrounding these activities is of significant importance.

Utilising AXIS M3007-PV Network Cameras and AXIS Q6045-E Network Cameras, Twickenham Stadium’s operations team can identify the poor practice of contractors on site, from not cordoning working zones correctly, to working at height without authorisation.

The majority of incidents identified at Twickenham Stadium through the use of network camera technology are health & safety related. The identification of this type of incident used to rely on physical patrols, meaning security staff could only see what was happening when it was taking place directly in their vicinity.

Propelling Twickenham Stadium into the future through technology With an increased amount of footage being captured, it is essential that Twickenham Stadium is able to store the data in order to help with post-incident reporting and investigative work. Axis’ Zipstream technology has played a crucial role in reducing bandwidth and storage requirements through analysing and optimising the network camera’s video stream in real-time. Scenes containing

interesting details are recorded in full image quality and resolution, while other areas of low-interest, such as a parking area, are filtered out. This means Twickenham Stadium has the capacity to hold a larger amount of footage to

help with investigative work than was previously available.

Clive Talbot, Director of Vindex Systems, said, “We’ve been working with Twickenham Stadium since July 2015 in order to prepare the stadium for the 2015 Rugby World Cup and beyond. We

have an excellent relationship with the operation’s team; our specialists regularly visit the site to provide on the job training and ongoing support to assist with the integration of the camera system. We also have many new projects in the pipeline, including expanding surveillance coverage into the external car parking areas and the re-development of the East Stand.”

Digital Media Technologies pioneers intelligent marketing with Axis cameras Outdoor media specialists utilise cameras beyond traditional realm of surveillance to develop award winning advertising projects that capture public interest and deliver uplift in sales.

Digital Media Technologies, providers of strategic technology consultancy, execution services and ongoing support related to digital media, utilised Axis cameras to support premium media companies Ocean Outdoor and Signature Outdoor to pioneer the use of intelligent advertising in two discrete campaigns.

The first focussed on raising awareness of Women’s Aid Day 2015; the second, a game of “What’s the time Mr Wolf?”, promoted the latest J20 drink flavour.

These initiatives both deployed network camera technology and were designed to capture the public’s interest and curiosity in order to drive brand awareness and ultimately boost sales conversion rates.

Digital Media Technologies selected the AXIS Q1765 – LE camera to undertake the Women’s Aid campaign. This is a bulletstyle outdoor-ready network camera offering wide overviews and detailed images over great distances.

This would prove crucial in determining when people were looking at the Women’s Aid digital display. The J20 campaign utilised four AXIS F1025 lenses and an AXIS F44 base unit, perfect for discreet surveillance as it can be installed in small spaces with only a pinhole visible for the lens.

The Women’s Aid Day campaign had an estimated global reach of 326 million, with an increase in charitable donations of 24.6 per cent in locations where the advertisements were displayed.

The J20 campaign experienced a sales increase of 11.5 per cent in Birmingham while the campaign was live. These figures highlight not only the increased sales during each campaign, but also increased brand awareness.

Women’s Aid Day campaign utilises audience detection technology The Women’s Aid Day project, which encouraged members of the public to help confront the signs of domestic violence by not turning a blind eye, showed a woman’s face that appeared to have been abused on a large digital screen. As members of the public walked past and looked at the screen, the face began to heal. The more people who glanced at the screen, the quicker her injuries healed. Once the woman was completely clear of bruises, she would mouth the words “thank you” to passers-by.

The campaign made unique use of facial recognition technology, allowing the interactive billboards to recognise when people were actively paying attention to the image of the bruised woman.

Those who looked at the billboards, displayed in various locations across London and Manchester, received instant feedback from a live video feed displayed at the bottom of the digital advertisement as a visual ticker-tape, registering an increasing number of viewers.

Digital Media Technologies’ Sales Director, Robin Arnold, said, “This project was extremely effective in creating recognition for the Women’s Aid campaign and boosting donations as a result. Historically, digital advertising on these large screens was a hard sell as it was an expensive form of publicity. However, as the industry begins to recognise that short, highimpact campaigns are an efficient and cost-effective form of digital advertising, we expect a shift towards this type of intelligent marketing. The campaign, one of the winners of Ocean Outdoor’s 2014 Art of Outdoor competition, was also awarded two coveted Cannes Lions awards.”

Discreet surveillance for marketing prank The “What’s the time Mr Wolf?”

J20 campaign, which took place in Birmingham’s regenerated city centre, deployed high-end infrastructure encased within 23 full motion screens, referred to as The Loop. This involved concealed Axis cameras capturing the movement of passers-by in a pantomime style prank.

When their backs were turned, an animated wolf slowly crept towards them on screen, stopping only when the passenger turned to face the wolf once more. Finally, when all appeared safe, the wolf would emerge from the screen to attack, leading to a surprise reaction.

Håkan started his new position on September 5th as Sales Director for Northern Europe, which includes the Nordics, Ireland and the UK. Håkan has substantial sales and general management experience spanning almost 30 years, having had senior roles at Anixter, Motorola and Avaya amongst others. Axis cameras: 20 years with Finn Humborstad By: Oystein Hjell, Key Account Manager Norway, Axis Communications Øystein Hjell: https://no.linkedin.com/in/øystein-hjell-88597b22 Over 20 years on from the introduction of the AXIS NetEye 200, Öystein Hjell, Key Account Manager for Norway at Axis Communications, speaks with Finn Humborstad – one of the first adopters of the original networked camera and Axis Partner of almost 20 years. Finn works with Triangel Consulting as a Senior IT Consultant, and has worked on projects ranging from a camera installation in a scout camp, to satellite images at the push of a button from the historic voyage of the ‘Saga Siglar’ replica, ‘Kvitserk’.

The project provided me with lessons and skills I shall never forget.

We also supplied the AXIS NetEye 200 to a scout group camp in July 1997. This involved over 12,000 individuals, with live video sent from a barn to the camp website over a 2Mbit internet line.

Can you tell us about your first installation with an Axis network camera?

With my background as a hobby photographer, programmer and system developer, sending images over the internet has always been an obsession of mine.

When I first discovered the AXIS NetEye 200 Network Camera in 1996, I was naturally thrilled. As early adopters of all technology, we had already started to develop dynamic websites with weather data*, featuring regularly updated photos - a novelty that also helped to increase web traffic.

I bought my first AXIS NetEye 200 Network Camera in the summer of 1996, the very beginning of a now 20-year long relationship with Axis. I designed and built an entire mobile solution with a network camera, a modem, a wind generator and solar cells, installing the solution at the Atlantic Road in Norway.

Compared to a modern installation using Axis cameras, what was the first installation like?

When we set up the first AXIS NetEye 200 there was very little in the way of IP expertise on the web. This was in a time before Google - the majority of our support came from one of the developers at Axis, who helped us move the process along.

The image resolution and functionality was also limited. There was no auto-iris and no remote zoom/focus. Even with these limitations, the camera was still far ahead of other manufacturers. Once we got the camera to work, it was, and in fact still is, very stable in operation.

Today, there are cameras with far better image quality and features than the NetEye 200, making use of modern applications and technologies.

The modern camera housing, which is designed for outdoor use, for example, contributes to less assembly work before installation. In my view, this is a key advantage outside of image quality

and stability. The biggest challenge we face today as an Axis partner is staying abreast of the ever-increasing number of camera models and technology variants.

Far from the days of the single original camera, there are now over 200 models.

The positive aspect is that with a growing number of applications, we can deliver more value for the customer than ever before.

You’ve been an Axis partner for many years. Could you share any particularly fun events that you remember?

After the first three cameras were delivered I was contacted by Ragnar Thorseth**, a well-known adventurer with many expeditions under his belt.

Ragnar and his wife Kari were building a website, www.haholmen.no, as a conference centre. Ragnar wanted hourly updates on the weather, with pictures directly streamed to guests. A fun feature, guests could, and in fact still can today, take a selfie on the dock. With the simple press of a button, a lamp was lit, an image was taken and then sent to the website.

Twenty years later, the solution is still in use, but of course using a far more advanced Axis camera.

What came next would prove to be one of our greatest challenges. Ragnar was planning to sail the Viking ship ‘Kvitserk’, a replica of the ‘Saga Siglar’, to the Shetland Islands at the turn of the millennium with an Axis camera on board. At the push of a button from the ship’s wheelhouse, Ragnar wanted to send pictures from the camera via satellite directly to a web page (www.haholmen.no).

Transferring satellite communications and FTP (2.500bps) from the camera to a landbased server was a significant challenge, especially without losing the connection.

As no-one had ever tried this before, it was a totally unique installation that we

can proudly say worked seamlessly for the entire crossing. Needless to say, Ragnar has taken his place as one of our most demanding customers to date, but has also been one of the most exciting to work with.

Do you have any favourite Axis products / solutions, either old or new?

We’ve been working with Axis products since 1997 and Milestone VMS since 2002.

Looking back, it was certainly the right decision, with Axis and Milestone currently representing virtually all of our business in this area.

As a highly valued Axis partner, do you have any insights on future surveillance camera trends you may like to share?

Video analytics is an area we have been focusing on since 2006 when we started working with Opax (a 3D terrain model) for high-end security.

In order to secure critical infrastructure, we could detect people with thermal cameras at any time of day and night.

I believe video analytics will continue to be an important tool across many sectors and can provide significant added value to Axis cameras. In the healthcare industry, for example, this can range from the security of patients and staff to diagnosis support.

As analytic tools become smarter and more secure in terms of detection capabilities and easier to implement, exciting new opportunities will become available.

I feel both fortunate and proud to have taken part in Axis’ development over the past 20 years and really do feel like part of the family. In terms of video analytics, we have developed a solution with license plate recognition for access control and billing according to destination. We also have a solution for identifying vehicles with dangerous goods (ADR). When showcasing the technology, it is not always possible to describe the security solutions in full detail.

We have collaborated with Norwegian news service NRK for almost two years, where we have aired live broadcasts from Mountain ‘MANNEN’ whenever a major rockslide is expected. It’s a perfect example of efficient production made possible by the IP camera.

Axis helps Porthcawl RNLI save lives through increased knowledge of weather conditions Safety and security improved through enhanced vision and image quality from Axis and PC1.

With tides reaching speeds of up to 7 knots (8mph), there are significant dangers in the area not present in other UK regions.

With such an active sea, combined with high tourism levels, Porthcawl’s RNLI station wanted to improve the safety and security of visitors, while increasing the efficiency of life-saving operations.

In order to achieve this, the station chose PC1, an Axis partner specialising in IT installations and creative design services, to undertake the implementation.

By the installation of an AXIS Q1775-E Fixed Network Camera on the pier, combined with a high-tech weather station, the Porthcawl RNLI station gained access to cutting-edge technology, providing easy access to weather metrics, tide activity, conditions monitoring and more.

A publicly accessible live-stream of seafront conditions also means those considering a visit to the area can monitor weather online, supporting Porthcawl’s tourism drive.

With a 10x optical zoom and autofocus capabilities, the RNLI decided the AXIS Q1775-E was the right choice, with the camera providing 24/7 surveillance capabilities and excellent image quality, day and night.

A key consideration was the weather conditions the camera would face, ranging from warm summer days to rough storms and ice. Continuous operation in a range of conditions is crucial when placed in a coastal location. With Axis cameras subjected to a variety of punishing environmental tests, extremely high standards are ensured.

“The quality of the camera is fantastic.

One of the most significant tasks a lifeboat station must undertake is observing the sea conditions so we can make judgements on the equipment lifeboat operators will need. With the excellent picture quality, we can inform the teams exactly what is required, saving time on each launch and ultimately resulting in more lives saved.

We wanted to have a view of the pier as it is such an important landmark, but also an incredibly dangerous one. This is also viewable by members of the public, who can alert the lifeboat station if they see someone in distress,” said Ian Stroud, Deputy Launch Authority and Press Officer at Porthcawl RNLI. “We installed a weather station onsite and connected the installation to YouTube, allowing the public and lifeboat staff to view real-time images and accurate weather reports - including tide times. The station will soon receive a superfast fibre connection, allowing for a further upgrade of the system to take full advantage of the AXIS Q1775-E’s HD capabilities,” said Graham Thomas, IT and Online Project Manager at PC1.

“We can then look at running an additional camera; one looking at the pier and another focussing on a portion of the coastal defence where waves crash up to 300 feet in the air,” continued Thomas.

RNLI statistics for 2015* show 44.4 per cent of lifeboat launches in 2015 were due to persons in distress - either ashore, offshore, or with manual pleasure craft such as surfboards or kayaks. By fully informing and educating the public on the conditions they will face on any particular day and reducing the number of persons around the water during dangerous periods, the necessity of a lifeboat launch will be reduced – increasing the safety and security of visitors to the area.

In addition to assisting with visitor and staff safety, the camera can provide cost savings above and beyond the initial cost of installation. With a minimum cost of a lifeboat launch estimated at £2,000, and 73 launches recorded in Porthcawl last year, this translates to an expenditure of at least £146,000.

By further educating the public on the dangers of the sea and potentially preventing the need for just two launches, the total cost of installation would already be covered - ensuring the safety of both the crew and public.
