Good evening and welcome to the Axis Foundation Charity Ball 2021.

The fact we are completely sold out for the event tonight is very much appreciated by all of us at the Axis Foundation and I can’t thank you all enough for your support. Many of you have attended this annual event for many years now and I can assure you we don’t take that support for granted. It is no exaggeration to say you have changed the lives of so many vulnerable people and communities for the better.

Since our last Charity Ball in 2019 the Pandemic has hit charities particularly badly. Many have been forced to cancel events and close shops that provide the vital funds they need to provide their care and services to people.

Ibrahim, Sandie Ryan as well as Axis’ Claire Richardson, Paul Smart, Kellie Durey and Sarah Hodgson. All of them work very hard on behalf of the Foundation and none of what we have achieved in the past 12 years would have been possible without them. I would also like to thank Steve Sutherland for once again compering this event and keeping us all on time tonight.

An experienced freelance marketing and PR consultant, Steve is the Commercial Ambassador for Charlton Athletic Community Trust and is a published writer on Corporate Social Responsibility in sport.

OUR AUCTIONEER – CHARLES HANSON Followers of TV's Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip will know Charles Hanson loves the drama of an auction and seeing bids come in! His career began at Christie's in London. He went on to launch Hansons Auctioneers in 2005 and now runs four salerooms in Derbyshire, Staffordshire, London and Oxfordshire. He’s passionate about supporting charities and says it's a privilege to bring the art of auctioneering to prestigious fundraising events.

OUR SINGER – GLENN MACNAMARA Glenn Macnamara has played the Rat Pack roles of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and has been described by Time Out as “one of the UK’s finest swing singers” and by The Guardian as “an amazing young talent”.

His repertoire focuses on The Kings of Swing: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Harry Connick Jr and Michael Bublé.

OUR VIOLINIST – RACHEL SOMERSET Rachel Somerset is an award-winning, professional electric and classical violinist. Rachel’s electric/acoustic violin performances of her eclectic repertoire – which includes popular, classical and Bollywood music as well as Christmas songs and hits from great musicals – add magic to corporate and private events including weddings. She is the winner of the London's Best Ceremony Act, presented by the Entertainment Awards.

Axis staff, by taking part in events, through volunteering in our gardens, shops and by giving their skills, consistently go above and beyond to show they care. We are proud that we have also helped the Hayes family directly.

Because of our dear partners like Axis, the Axis Foundation and all those who support them, like you attending this wonderful Charity Ball, Demelza can continue to support children like Curtis and his family whatever their needs and for however long they require us.

Thanks to your kindness, the expert care all of our children and families so vitally need will be ready and waiting for them.

MORE ABOUT CURTIS

When Curtis stays at Demelza it gives me a break and he loves it there. It means we can have time together as a couple and that we get to spend time with our daughter Olivia, who is eight. Olivia has gone to the sibling support group which Demelza runs and it was lovely that she made a friend there.

A day trip might seem simple and standard for many but for twelve-year-old Curtis, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare genetic condition for which there is no cure, a simple standard day out without careful planning around travel logistics and his medicine routine is not an option. Curtis was not breathing when he was born and has global development delay, microcephaly and autism. He is not able to feed himself, dress himself, wash or clean his teeth. He needs a machine to help him cough. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a progressive muscle degeneration and weakness meaning Curtis may only live until he is 20 – which means his Mum, Dad and younger sister treasure not only every Christmas that they are able to spend with him, but every single day.

At Demelza Curtis enjoys time in the hydrotherapy pool, splashing around with his Mum, Dad and Olivia, where the family make special memories.

MORE ABOUT DEMELZA Every year, Demelza is a lifeline to over 750 babies, children and young people and 4,000 individual family members across the south east of England.

We care for children (from babies to young adults) with a range of different conditions, some of which are so rare they have no name.

Demelza gives these families the time, space and attention to cope. From diagnosis, for as long as we’re needed, we deliver specialist care with compassion. If a family chooses for their child to die at Demelza, we’ll make sure they have the support they need to focus on loving each other and make lasting memories.

ABIGAIL Abigail was born a healthy baby girl, the third daughter to loving parents Funke and AJ. At 18 months old, Abigail convulsed suddenly, slipping into a coma. When she came around two weeks later, oxygen deprivation had tragically caused significant damage to Abigail’s brain, leaving her unable to walk, talk, eat or breathe unassisted.

Abigail, now 10 years old, has been able to depend on the support of Demelza over the years – not only during times of crisis, but for respite and rest with her whole family, including her two older sisters.

The Covid-19 Pandemic has meant the demand for our services has increased significantly at a time when our fundraising activity has been greatly reduced.

Demelza children and families have been pushed to the limits: many have been shielding for over a year and may continue to do so in order to protect their child; some children cannot have the vaccine because of the risk of unknown side-effects; others are still waiting to receive it and in some families, siblings and parents can have their vaccination but their affected child can’t. It continues to be a very distressing and complex time for our families.

Coming to Demelza is something for us to look forward to as a family. Abigail loves having a proper bubble bath. Staying here is our only respite so we have a chance to rest and sleep soundly, which is a rarity at home. We can’t thank the team here enough for being so helpful and kind through challenging times.

LUCY Lucy was initially misdiagnosed as having Down’s Syndrome after birth, her unique genetic condition not being picked up until later. The family have been accessing services at Demelza for six years. Parents Sam and Craig also use the respite service for Lucy when they need to visit Craig’s father who has Dementia.

We can enjoy family activities and meet up with friends at the hospice with access to all the facilities we need. Lucy loves having a family swim in the hydrotherapy pool and enjoys art therapy and music sessions. Demelza saved our family’s sanity, we are so grateful for the help.

During 2020 and COVID-19, we have valued your support even more. The Pandemic badly affected many charities: fundraising capacity and face-to-face contact with those they reach was impacted heavily and although most adapted to provide a different kind of service, the effects are hard hitting and long term.

Although we were unable to host our annual charity ball or golf day in 2020, with your help, the Axis Foundation continued to support small, local and impactful causes during 2020 – and indeed throughout 2021.

DEMELZA WINTER APPEAL 2020 £75,000

FOR OUR FRIENDS AT DEMELZA

COVID-19 prevented us from hosting our annual Axis Foundation Charity Ball in December 2020. However Axis people, our suppliers and subcontractors responded brilliantly to our Demelza Winter Appeal and raised £44,139.46 through generous personal donations. Axis donated an additional £30,860.54. The Axis Foundation was delighted to present a cheque for £75,000 to Demelza in January 2021.

Thank you from Demelza To each and every one of you – all you truly wonderful people working directly at Axis, and of course to all the subcontractors and suppliers who went that extra mile to get involved too – from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. £75,000 will fund 1,531 hours of expert, daytime care for a child or young person with a serious or terminal condition; or two specialist nurses for an entire year.

MAYPOLE PROJECT £66,000 FOR SICK CHILDREN Since 2016, we have supported the Maypole Project which helps families and their children with life-threatening illnesses. We have donated a minibus called Mayble, built a sensory barn, bought sensory toys and funded vital mobility equipment, drumming workshops and family outings.
