The London Borough of Hounslow appointed Axis for a Solar PV, LED and Roof Repairs Contract, following a successful mini competition through the LHC Retrofit and Decarbonisation ( N9) Framework under Workstream 6 – Solar PV and Electrical.

The project took place at four schools in the borough: Feltham Hill Infant and Nursery School, Cardinal Road Primary School, Southville Primary School and Beavers Primary School.

To minimise disruption to pupils and staff, the majority of installation works were scheduled during school holidays and halfterm breaks and delivered in a two-phase programme, beginning with the installation of solar PV systems ranging from 35kWp to 49kWp, followed by comprehensive LED lighting upgrades.

Electricians and roofing specialists worked simultaneously across the sites, enabling us to complete some installations within a single week while maintaining programme deadlines. Strict safeguarding procedures, clear communication with school leadership teams and robust health and safety controls ensured all works were delivered safely and efficiently.

£401,000 value 6 months duration

The programme is expected to reduce energy consumption by more than 400,000kWh annually, saving over £100,000 per year in energy costs while preventing approximately 84 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

Funding for the programme was secured through a combination of grant funding from the Greater London Authority and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for the solar PV installations and direct council investment for the LED lighting upgrades.

In addition to the core contract works, Axis worked collaboratively with the council’s project management team to identify further LED lighting opportunities, generating additional energy savings beyond the original scope.

We also committed to the delivery of educational presentations to pupils explaining renewable energy, sustainability and carbon reduction.

As part of our social value commitment, we are donating £1,000 to each school to support environmental initiatives, educational resources and activities chosen by the schools themselves, helping to create a lasting legacy beyond the physical improvements.

Client Relationship This project marks the beginning of a new relationship between Axis and the London Borough of Hounslow. We worked closely with the council and their project management team to deliver a collaborative and solutions-focused programme calling on our extensive experience of delivering decarbonisation, refurbishment and compliance projects and of the unique operational requirements of the education sector, including safeguarding obligations, restricted access periods and the need to minimise disruption to teaching and learning.
