Chairman’s Welcome

A warm welcome to the Axis Foundation Charity Ball 2023. As always, tonight we are supporting Demelza as well as raising money for a range of small, local and impactful causes which the Axis Foundation is proud to support. 2023 has been a very special year for Demelza. They celebrated 25 years of delivering extraordinary care to extraordinary children facing serious or lifelimiting conditions. We wish them a very happy 25th birthday and also every success in their amazing work for the future. We also celebrated 20 years of supporting Demelza this year. For those of you who don’t know, Axis’ friendship with Demelza started in 2003. In 2004 we made our first donation to the hospice and this was before the Axis Foundation was born! In over 20 years of this very special friendship Axis and the Axis Foundation have donated over £1m to Demelza whom we are now delighted to call our charity partner.

Axis is once again match-funding the proceeds from tonight’s ball. Every pound you donate or spend will go twice as far!

In the midst of the celebrations and joy I would like to pay tribute to our much-loved and respected former trustee Sandie Ryan who sadly died in October. Many of you will personally know and remember Sandie – her warmth and tireless energy, her absolute Sandie Ryan love for the Axis Foundation and this ball in particular. Indeed fellow trustee, Axis founder and CEO John Hayes says: “Without Sandie, the Axis Foundation would not have been the success it is today.” We know that, with her familiar, lovely big smile, Sandie would exhort you to love, laugh, dance and enjoy your night, whilst helping us raise funds for the vital causes supported by the Foundation. So, as you always do, please join in the celebrations and support our auctions, table games and raffle this evening. Hopefully there is something on offer to suit every pocket! I would like to take this opportunity to thank our patron Alan Curbishley, my fellow trustees Maurice Gertski, John Hayes, Mick Hayes, Tim Hayes, Joe Ibrahim and Claire Pearce, as well as Axis’ brilliant support team of Paul Smart, Kellie Turner and Sarah Hodgson. All of them work very hard on behalf of the Foundation and none of what we achieve would be possible without them. I would also like to thank Steve Sutherland for once again compering this event and keeping us all on time tonight. Steve is hanging his boots up after this year’s event and we are very grateful for his support over many years. For Your Entertainment Tonight… OUR AUCTIONEER – CHARLES HANSON Followers of TV's Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip will know Charles Hanson loves the drama of an auction and seeing bids come in! His career began at Christie's in London. He went on to launch Hansons Auctioneers in 2005 and now runs six salerooms in Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Kent, Hertfordshire, London and Oxfordshire. Charles is passionate about supporting charities and says it's a privilege to bring the art of auctioneering to prestigious fundraising events.

OUR MC – STEVE SUTHERLAND Steve recently returned to Charlton Athletic FC for the 3rd time in his career to take up the role of Interim Commercial Manager under the club’s new owners. Previously Steve spent 25 years at the top level of commercial management in professional football, including holding senior positions at The Football League (EFL), Swindon Town FC and in two previous spells at Charlton. Steve is an ambassador of the renowned Charlton Athletic Community Trust and he is a published writer on Corporate Social Responsibility in Sport. We are delighted that Steve is once again our MC at the Axis Foundation Charity Ball – his 7th year in the role – and as always, we thank him for kindly donating his services to us at no charge to our charity.

Thank You from Demelza In their special 25th anniversary year, Demelza says thank you to all our guests for your continued support.

This year marks 25 years since Derek and Jennifer Phillips opened the original Demelza hospice in Sittingbourne, Kent, in memory of their daughter Demelza who tragically died of a brain tumour, at the age of 24. For those guests tonight who do not know our history: Demelza Phillips inspired the creation of the hospices and the charity. She worked at a children’s hospice in Birmingham and was inspired by their work and its impact. This inspiration was passed on to her parents, who had the vision to establish a children’s hospice in the south east of England. Our mission is to continue delivering extraordinary care to extraordinary children facing serious or life-limiting conditions. We are here to support them and their families from first diagnosis and for as long as we are needed.

Where your money helps • £15 helps personalise a child’s bedroom for end of life care • £142 pays for a day of specialist care from a Demelza Registered Nurse • £5 pays for a personalised welcome bag for each child visiting Demelza for the first time The partnership between Axis, the Axis Foundation and Demelza has been going for twenty years now. ADDICKS PARTNERSHIP The Axis Foundation is proud of our partnership with Charlton FC – our recent donation of £3,500 to the Charlton Athletic Supporters Trust helps partially-sighted supporters receive live commentaries at The Valley where fans will be familiar with our branding. Peter Varney, Foundation Chairman, joined CAFC as MD in 1997 and was promoted to CE in 1998. And our patron, Alan Curbishley, famously managed Charlton from 1991 to 2006. Our winning team of Alan and Peter saw the club through many successful years. And together they work tirelessly for our Foundation. We are grateful to them both.

NEW TRUSTEE Axis’ Divisional Finance Controller Claire Pearce was appointed to become one of the trustees of the Axis Foundation. To become a trustee of the Axis Foundation is a huge, huge honour. It is humbling to make a decision that will have a huge impact on someone’s life. Yes, it’s an honour to be part of that process.

CELEBRITY GOLF DAY Our annual celebrity golf day raised £26,000 for Demelza and the Axis Foundation and we presented a cheque for £138,545 to Demelza. We purchased 40 Winter Warmer packs so Strongbones can keep vulnerable children – with bone conditions such as scoliosis, bone cancer and spina bifida – warm this winter.

Our donation helps Ambition, Aspire Achieve to provide Stratford children in proverty with a Christmas stocking of new gifts, specific to their needs and wishes.
