THE HISTORIC CITY OF VALLETTA

Founded by the Knights following the Great Siege in 1565, Valletta is known as the ‘city built by gentlemen for gentlemen’ and was inaugurated as Malta’s capital in 1571. While it’s the smallest European capital, it is big on culinary experiences, history and attractions, offering something for every traveller.

HERITAGE

AX The Saint John was once a former merchant’s residence and shop, back in the 17th century when Merchants Street was the commercial hub. Since then, it has been passed down from generation to generation until it joined the AX Hotels family. In 2016, the building has been elegantly converted into a boutique hotel, showcasing its unique and authentic architectural features.

The reformulated accommodation combines luxury, technology and style, presenting a unique boutique hotel for the smart and independent globetrotter.

What was once Property 176 in Merchants Street has now been transformed into a chic space, redefining urban living.

For families or groups travelling together, AX The Saint John also offers a Comfort Quad Room that can accommodate up to four people.

CONCEPT BRAND THE GRAIN

Inspired by tailors of old whose workshops were located on Merchants Street, our restaurant is called Grain.

The Grain concept is divided into three distinct brands, each unique and offering something for every gourmand: our flagship haute cuisine restaurant Under Grain, the fashionable and convivial restaurant Grain Street and the rooftop lounge Over Grain. Under Grain has clinched the MICHELIN One Star accolade since 2020 and in 2022, it was joined by Grain Street which was awarded Bib Gourmand status, making Grain the first brand in Malta to house two MICHELIN-awarded restaurants under one roof.
