Editors Thoughts As we wrap up 2024, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what has been an outstanding year for the working dog community. I’ve been fortunate to travel across New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria, attending trials in some of the most breathtaking locations. Every event brought its own charm—new landscapes to admire, new friends to meet, and countless inspiring stories to hear. This year has truly been a celebration of the incredible bond between handlers and their dogs, and the passion that drives us all.

One of the year’s most unforgettable highlights was the Supreme Australian Championships in Geelong. The Australian team shone brilliantly, taking out the Wayleggo Cup in an awe-inspiring display of skill and teamwork.

Congratulations to everyone involved—you’ve made the entire community proud.

Beyond the top-tier competitions, 2024 has been a year where the next generation of handlers has taken the spotlight. It’s been thrilling to see young talents like all across the country stepping up to the challenge. Their dedication, fresh energy, and natural talent have brought a new vibrancy to the sport. Le ers to e Editor Sally Purbrick-Illek - Gold Coast, QLD Spare the Rod and Spoil the Dog? I am the owner of three working border collies, all of whom have been trained to work stock (mostly sheep and ducks) and have successfully trialed with all of them in herding as well.

I live in an urban environment and don’t own my own stock, so I rely on others to provide the environment in which I can train my dogs. We also train and compete in a number of other canine sports, and my oldest border collie volunteers as a therapy dog in our local community. I am firm, but fair when training my dogs and have reached the highest levels in some of our sports without having to resort to inflicting physical pain as a training tool.

Through the years, I have become increasingly concerned about the number of working dog trainers in Queensland whom rely extensively on physically aversive training methods. Electronic dog collars have been banned in several countries as well as in the ACT, NSW and SA. To my knowledge there are no valid studies that indicate that the use of e-collars is more effective in training dogs then less aversive methods such as positive reinforcement. Susie T - Hunter Valley, NSW I’ve noticed there are plenty of training schools for Kelpies and yard trialing, which is great, but what about Border Collies and 3 sheep trialling? For those of us interested in three-sheep trialing, there doesn’t seem to be much available to help us handlers get started or build our skills. It’s surprising, considering how popular Border Collies are and how popular they are in trialing and stock work There seems to be no shortage of DVDs and online programs teaching how to train working dogs, but most of these assume we already know how to handle stock, have access to broken-in sheep, and an older, experienced dog to help with training your young one. That’s not a realistic setup for people like me, especially when just starting out. It leaves beginners stuck, not knowing where to start or how to make progress.

Three-sheep trialing is a fantastic sport, but it’s a real challenge. For me it is not something I can easily pick up from a video or online course. I need hands-on experience and personal guidance or feedback, the kind you’d get from a proper school or clinic, but there doesnt seem to be many of those around for Border Collies and those of us who would like to one day compete in 3 sheep trialling.

I would love to attend a beginner-friendly school that covers the basics of stock work and trialing and build towards an advanced clinic for handlers looking to take their skills to the next level. I feel that not only would this help individual handlers and dogs, but it would also grow the sport and make it more accessible to potential newcomers like me.

Border Collies are an incredible breed with so much potential, and they deserve as many opportunities as Kelpies and other working dogs. I would just love it if some of the great handlers I have seen out competing and watched online trainings might read this letter and consider running some in person training and development days with an aim of fulfilling this gap and give Border Collie handlers the support some of us need to have a go and hopefully succeed.

Keep up the great work with this amazing magazine, I love when it arrives in my letterbox and I read it cover to cover many times.

‘Gold Standard’ Tick Protection

There are two deadly ticks to dogs in Australia. There is the paralysis tick, where a single tick can kill a dog by injecting a dangerous neurotoxin; and there is the brown dog tick, where a single brown dog tick bite can transmit the deadly dog disease Ehrlichiosis.

In parts of Australia where there is high paralysis tick pressure, veterinarians recommend double protection, or so-called ‘gold standard’ tick protection. This involves using two different tick protection products with different modes of action to elevate the tick protection provided to your dog. A systemically acting product, which can be a spot on, injection or an oral product like Credelio™ PLUS, protects your dog from the inside. These types of products are highly effective at controlling ticks; however, they rely on the tick ingesting the dog’s blood to be killed.

In the scenic countryside of King’s Plain, New South Wales, Jeremy Grills has carved out a respected name in both the Angus cattle and working dog communities. As the man behind Eaglehawk Angus and Working Dogs, Jeremy’s journey from a farm boy to a leading figure in the working dog world reflects his dedication, passion, and love for rural life.

Jeremy’s connection to farming runs deep. Growing up on the eastern side of Guyra, he was immersed in rural life from an early age. “I’ve sort of always wanted to do it,” he says, reflecting on his childhood.

It was during these early years that his fascination with working dogs began to take root. “I remember

Dad used to go out mustering, and I’d run beside the quad like I thought I was a dog,” he recalls, laughing.

“I didn’t ride a bike or anything—just sat on the back with the dogs, watching them work.”

“You can’t force it. If a dog doesn’t respect you, it won’t work properly. It’s like a partnership—you’ve got to have that connection.”

His admiration for the way dogs could lead and control livestock was clear even then, laying the foundation for what would become his future career.

His reputation for breeding and training dogs that are both practical and efficient has garnered him a loyal following of buyers seeking reliable working dogs.

Like many young men growing up on farms, Jeremy faced the question of whether to pursue a trade or follow his passion for farming. “Dad wanted me to get a trade,” Jeremy explains. “I tried my hand at welding, worked as a boilermaker for a while, but it wasn’t for me. Once I went north, there was no looking back.” His travels took him to the northern regions of Australia, where he worked as a contractor under renowned cattleman Shane Templeton, managing cattle on a large scale. But it wasn’t until his return to Rockvale Farms that Jeremy’s passion for working dogs truly took off.

“I’ve always loved dogs,” Jeremy explains. “They teach you more than you realise. A good dog can make a tough job seem easy.” His philosophy is grounded in simplicity: working dogs should do their job without fuss or flair.

“I didn’t have working dogs until I started at Rockvale,” Jeremy admits. “Before that, I had a few pig dogs and dogs that could catch bulls, but no real working dogs.” It was at Rockvale that Jeremy got his first real taste of working with dogs trained specifically for livestock handling. His first dog, a blue cattle dog named Blue, quickly became his right-hand companion. “She could lead a mob of cows and do just about anything,” Jeremy recalls fondly.

This hands-on approach with both livestock and dogs became Jeremy’s signature style. Today, at Eaglehawk Angus and Working Dogs, his day revolves around managing cattle, assessing heifers for AuctionsPlus, and training his team of dogs. Jeremy’s efforts have paid off, with his dogs consistently topping sales at the RMA Working Dog Auctions for three consecutive years.

“You can lose your name overnight if you sell a bad dog, so every dog I sell is one I’d have no trouble working with myself.”

“People want a dog that can move a mob of cattle or sheep through a gate, get them to the yards, and do it simply,” he says, summarizing the essence of what makes a good working dog.

One of Jeremy’s standout dogs is Twisty, a strong yellow kelpie known for his reliable work ethic. “When I went from collies to kelpies, it took me a long time to find a strong kelpie that still had a good big punch,” Jeremy says.

“I bought Twisty as a young dog, intending to trade him, but he’s never left. He’s about five now and just a good, solid, honest dog. He’ll back sheep, bite a cow, and never let you down.”

Twisty’s legacy lives on through many of Jeremy’s current dogs, including Tarko, another yellow kelpie from the same line. “Most of the dogs I have are either

His breeding program is focused on producing dogs with strong instincts, solid temperaments, and the ability to handle the demands of daily farm work.

For Jeremy, success in the sales ring isn’t just about getting the highest price—it’s about maintaining his hard-earned reputation. “The dogs I put in a sale are dogs I’d be willing to keep at home,” he explains. “You can lose your name overnight if you sell a bad one, so every dog I sell is one I’d have no trouble working with myself.”

This emphasis on quality has earned Jeremy the trust of many buyers, who appreciate his approach to training and selecting dogs.

“A lot of the dogs I’ve sold were misfits that didn’t suit someone else’s program,” he shares. “But when you bring them home, give them a chance, and let them work, they often prove themselves in ways you didn’t expect.”

Jeremy’s keen eye for spotting potential in a dog is what sets him apart. Whether it’s a pup from his own breeding program or a dog picked up for training, his ability to bring out the best in each animal has been key to his success. His advice to newcomers in the working dog world is to be patient and start with strong foundations.

“It’s about giving them the right environment to succeed.”

“You’ve got to start with a dog that has natural instinct,” he says. “From there, it’s about giving them the right environment to succeed.”

Despite his successes, Jeremy remains humble, emphasizing the importance of the bond between a dog and its handler. “A dog has to want to work for you,” he says. “You can’t force it. If a dog doesn’t respect you, it won’t work properly. It’s like a partnership—you’ve got to have that connection.”

While trialing isn’t his main focus, Jeremy enjoys watching good dogs perform in trials. “I love watching good dogs work,” he says. “Even though I don’t compete much, there’s always something to learn.”

For now, Jeremy Grills remains dedicated to his life on the farm, surrounded by the animals he loves and his family. His dogs—hardworking, reliable, and loyal—are a testament to his passion for the craft. And as long as there’s cattle to muster and dogs to train, Jeremy will be there, leading the way with his trusty team of working dogs by his side.

What is a Shepherd’s Crook and how should I use it?

A crook, staff or stick has traditionally been a shepherd’s multi-purpose tool since man first herded sheep. It is basically a long and sturdy stick with a hook at one end. It has been said that the only tools needed are a good whistle and a crook.

Years ago very few shepherds ever had money to buy a crook, so for many the only option was to make their own. In those days a shepherd’s crook was more than a tool of trade; it was a symbol of their status and made a statement about who they were.

Today there are various types available from the readily available plastic options, lightweight aluminium, right up to beautifully crafted, carved timber and horn masterpieces.

A crook has many uses - It’s a support for walking over rough country when mustering; a means of catching ewes and lambs around the neck or legs, a defence weapon against predators and today it is becoming a common training aid when used as an arm extension.

When being used as a training aide, it is important to note it is certainly not a weapon but instead an extension of the arm, used as a barrier or wall to transfer pressure for the dog to move off or not move into. The higher the crook is held the more pressure the dog feels, therefore it is important to hold the crook still and low when not in use.

Examples of training scenarios •

When training a young pup to walk beside or behind you a crook can be carried to be held or waved slowly in front of the dog, acting as a barrier or wall, encouraging the dog to slow down, and come back into the required position. This can be started with the dog on a lead and then with time as the dog masters being in the required position the lead removed.

Teaching a young dog to balance in a small yard or round yard a crook can be used as a barrier/pressure together with correct body positioning to change direction or if the crook is pointed toward the rib of the dog, this pressure is enough to create an arc and move the dog out wider from the sheep. We often see a plastic rake used in this scenario.

When training a dog to follow/drive its sheep and stay within the required ‘V’ like area, the handler can walk backwards in front of the sheep holding a crook in each hand. If the dog tries to leave the ‘V’ the crook can be held out, acting as a barrier putting pressure on the dog to return to the required position.

When encouraging the dog to keep some distance off sheep a crook can be tossed into the air to grab the dog’s attention. Not thrown at the dog, but instead into the air in front of the dog. Often the dog will stop or at least slow to look up at the crook, giving relief and distance off the sheep. Reward the dog and encourage him to remain in the position he has just been shown.

The Working Maremma On Small Rural Holdings & Sheep Studs

A co-operative article between Catherine Kimmorley, Graeme Budd, Wayne Wayte and Scott Amon

Over recent instalments in this magazine we have taken you through a journey of understanding regarding a relatively new working dog breed for Australian livestock handlers. Not so much a working dog as we generally envisage, but a livestock guardian dog (LGD). Just like our working dogs, it has been selectively bred for inherited natural instinct - in the Maremma’s case, to live constantly with and guard our livestock from predators.

In this article we look at two experienced Maremma breeders and graziers. They offer their thoughts and experiences on the Maremma and how it has benefited their enterprises.

Catherine Kimmorley - ‘Anvil Park’ Kellys Plains, NSW

‘Anvil Park’ is the home of ‘Anvil Wiltipoll Sheep Stud’ and is nestled in the Kellys Plains district 5km from Armidale in the New England District, NSW. Catherine and Michael Kimmorley purchased the small rural holding of 75 acres on rich basalt soil in 2007.

“We were looking for a small retirement property within close proximity to town which had the capacity to continue to run our small sheep stud” The Kimmorley’s had previously run their sheep stud on a property in the Hunter Valley. This is where they first introduced Maremmas to their flock in the mid 1990s.

The property was surrounded by heavily timbered country which continued to create a fox and predator-bird problem.

This in turn prompted extensive research and purchase of a Maremma guardian puppy.

“We both worked off farm and we needed to have guardian dogs to protect the farm and livestock, especially during lambing time.”

Maremmas for nearly 30 years. They usually run between two and four dogs at a time, in pairs, in different paddocks.

Soon after the move to Kellys Plains, their single older Maremma was feeling the effects of old age and struggled to be an effective and active guardian. They had quite heavy lamb losses that year.

It was during this period that they realised that a new Maremma pup needed to be introduced and bonded with the existing dogs and sheep every 2 to 4 years. It takes between one and two years to have a dog working responsibly with a flock during lambing. The older experienced dogs prove to be great mentors for the younger dogs. Over the last 30 years the Sheep Stud has had nine dogs bonded and protecting their livestock.

In semi rural-residential areas there is usually no active fox control, thus, the Maremmas are vital to the productivity of this farming enterprise. The protection the Maremmas provide has shown a steady increase in the lambing rate, with an average of 160%.

Respect all fences and gates “The welfare of my dogs is paramount so they must stay in the paddock to guard their sheep. A Maremma will usually stay with their livestock but they have been known to try to extend their boundaries, particularly entire males.”

“It is important for me to have the young pups, (starting at 3 to 4 months of age), experience an electric stand-off wire or tape usually around the top rail of their bonding pen.

“This year has been a particularly good season with the lambing rate at 179% for the stud and commercial flocks.”

Catherine points out that apart from bonding the dogs well to livestock, there are some important areas that need to be addressed for a responsible guardian dog on a small rural holding, surrounded by roads and neighbours.

There are certain aspects that should be considered: Companionship It is recommended for the dogs to have the company of another Maremma for companionship and a deeper feeling of bonding with the livestock and their territory. They are less likely to want to explore further than their boundary if they are contented in their surroundings. “We usually have dogs bonded as pairs of male and female. (desexed)”

Then, when the area is extended to a holding yard of several acres, they need to experience hot fences on all the perimeters to reinforce that fences are not to be tested and must be respected. It would also be advisable to have the main boundary fences hot wired as well to enforce the respect for fences. Another area of importance is to have low swung gates, so the dogs are not tempted to crawl or dig under them. Hanging bars or netting at the base of the gates can also be effective.

Years of experience have proved that this respect for fences and gates is very important when the dogs are young. Once a Maremma has experienced jumping, crawling over or under fences, it is near impossible to retrain them to stay in their paddock.”

“Another important factor is that your dog should be in areas where you want them to actually guard and live. For example, do not make it a common practice to have your dog in the house yard or relaxing on the verandah. (unless that is your long-term plan).”

Socialisation with humans “The young pup should be introduced and patted by many people and children in the first year so they are comfortable and confident with strangers. This socialisation should be part of the plan during the ‘bonding with livestock phase’. Throughout the puppy’s first 2-6 months, at least once a week, the pup should be handled or patted by children and other adults.

On the sheep stud, we have constant visitors and buyers to inspect sheep. The dogs need to be quite comfortable with strangers being amongst the sheep and escorted around the property. Acceptance of strangers is also important for veterinary visits. They need to be able to accept handling, without stress, for their vaccinations, treatment for injuries or other health problems which may arise.”

“Maremmas are very astute, therefore, once a poor behaviour becomes entrenched it is very hard to retrain the ‘correct’ behaviour. If recognised early Walcrow Hugo (14 months). “From my experience the first year is the most important time to guide your dog to be the best guardian of your flock.”

“The saying.... ‘start with how you mean to finish’ is a very pertinent comment with regards to the handling and

training experiences of a Maremma, and how you want your dog to behave over its lifetime.”

“Consider carefully, all aspects of your intended dogs working life. Positive early experiences will allow the dog to be a contented and trustworthy working companion.”

Graeme Budd - ‘Old Munbilla’ Grafton NSW Our property is situated about 15 km south of Grafton NSW. We purchased Dorper sheep over 20 years ago in an effort to control a rich carpet of fireweed and quickly became enthusiastic about the breed, establishing a stud in 2004. Alpacas were initially relied on to protect the sheep.

In 2006 we carried out an embryo transfer program to upgrade the quality of our Dorpers. We had our first Maremma by this time and it was bonded to another mob when the lambs from this program were born. These new lambs were ‘protected’ by our best 2 Alpacas as we knew that they would enthusiastically chase away dogs.

One afternoon when I came home late from work I found the Alpacas huddled in the middle of the terrified sheep.

Scattered about were numerous dead and dying lambs.

The need for a more effective alternative to Alpacas as guardians was obvious.

We proceeded to add Maremmas to the team with up to 10 at various times. Thankfully, receiving excellent advice from people with real world experience using Maremmas in building reliable guardian dogs from playful 8 week old pups.

As you would expect with new enterprises, we made plenty of mistakes and have tried to learn from them. In approximately 2010 the publication Guardian Dogs – Best Practice Manual for use of Livestock Guardian Dogs by Linda van Bommel for the Invasive Species CRC was

released, making it much easier to avoid mistakes. This publication is a fantastic resource on all things Maremma and available free to download on the internet.

I have found the period from 8 to 16 weeks of age is critical.

If that opportunity is lost then effective bonding can be problematic. The aim in training the young Maremma is to make them safe and attentive with the livestock they are guarding. With quality genetics and effective bonding the Maremma will spend its entire life with their livestock.

We have found there is no guarantee that a Maremma will not leave its stock. The most likely place for it to go is to the people who look after it. If they come to the home, it is critical that they are sent back to their sheep promptly and forcefully. Some Maremmas learn very quickly to adopt the home as their base if their role is not made clear. Our Maremmas will sometimes come to the sheep yards when another mob of sheep with different guardians are there.

They are then sent back to their own mob.

A Maremma that will successfully spend its entire life with livestock, diligently guarding them, as opposed to one that has not bonded correctly can be summed as follows.

Purchase a pup from parents selected for their diligence, performance and strong inherited traits. It is also important to ensure the dog is effectively bonded with livestock from 8 to 16 weeks of age (see bonding article in a previous issue of this magazine). Doing this will increase your chances of having a successful guardian dog.

Occasionally, when stock are sold and are leaving the property on a truck or trailer, our Maremma guarding them (even if it is a small part of the mob that is leaving), will follow the vehicle containing the livestock. Sending the Maremma back to their remaining livestock immediately is essential.

A similar challenge managing a well bonded Maremma might occur when livestock are moved from one mob to another. One or more of the Maremmas with the initial mob may show a preference to stay with one particular group. It is not always clear which mob they will choose. In the worst case it may be necessary to lead or transport them back 2 or 3 times before they settle down with the new mob. Splitting up well bonded Maremmas that have been working together for a period can result in similar issues which we deal with in the same way.

--------------------------------------------------------------This article represents the fifth part in a series of instalments on Maremmas in the AWSDM. Beginning with their ancient and intriguing history, then working through the all-important selection and bonding process. Wayne Wayte then explained how the Maremma has allowed him to diversify and open up once uninhabitable country and new enterprises on the expansive, historical Ballandean Station. Here they guard and protect against predators in a true pack form. Wayne has observed many amazing traits while monitoring his dozen or so strong team of Maremmas.

After hearing of their stories of tremendous guardianship of their flocks, my wife Trish and I have also added a couple of Maremmas to our cattle and Australian White sheep stud. We were commonly experiencing numerous yearly attacks on our sheep resulting in significant losses. Since introducing our Maremmas some 18 months or so back we have not lost a single lamb or adult to wild dog predation. To personally witness their inherited traits and interaction within a flock has been a tremendous experience.

One concerning trend is the growing interest in the breed as a family pet. This breed of dog is highly independent and largely untrainable when compared with conventional domesticated dogs. Their instinct to live amongst and guard livestock is overwhelming and it is where they are most comfortable and at their best.

I feel strongly that this dog breed is highly under-utilised in Australia and could well resolve a great many livestock predation losses for a large number of Australian graziers. I speak for all involved in this series of articles when I say that I feel the Maremma has a huge potential to increase productivity and profitability for most sheep, goat and all livestock enterprises. I hope you enjoyed the Maremma journey as much as we have delivering it to you.

Tony Overton

G

rowing up in the small town of Gravesend, east of Moree, Tony Overton is the youngest of three boys in a family involved in sheep, cattle, and cropping. His childhood was filled with carefree days of riding bikes, chasing sheep, and the typical fun of growing up on a farm. However, as he grew older, Tony realised there was more to life than farming, which led him to pursue further education and explore the world of agriculture from different perspectives.

After attending boarding school in Tamworth and later agricultural college in Victoria, he embarked on a journey that took him far beyond his hometown. Initially, Tony worked as a station hand and travelled extensively, gaining experiences that shaped his outlook on life and farming.

At one point, he even lived and worked overseas, where he spent time with sled dogs in Scandinavia and hounds in Exmoor. This global exposure to different dog breeds and ways of working with animals deepened his understanding of dogs’ roles in agricultural settings.

Upon his return to Australia, Tony began focusing on working dogs, particularly Kelpies, though his connection to dogs began much earlier in his childhood. The family dogs were far from professional working dogs, more skilled at chasing foxes and rabbits than managing livestock. As Tony humorously recalled, “We always had dogs—pretty loose term working dogs, I think. They were good at chasing foxes and rabbits and riding on the back of the ute.” His father, an engineer who transitioned into farming later in life, did own a capable red and tan dog that Tony remembers fondly, but it wasn’t until Tony attended a dog school run by Neil McDonald that his passion for working dogs truly took off. “I went and did that, and pretty much from there, it just sort of snowballed,” he explained.

Neil’s methods and philosophy on training working dogs resonated with Tony, inspiring him to refine his skills and understand how dogs should work with sheep and cattle.

Currently, Tony manages a superfine merino operation in Walcha, New South Wales, running about 20,000 sheep

and hundreds of cattle. His role, which he has held for over 21 years, involves overseeing the day-to-day operations of the farm, including managing a small team of staff and, of course. While his office duties keep him away from the field more than he would like, Tony still finds time to work his dogs, finding comfort and relaxation in these moments away from paperwork. “I don’t spend much time on the tools, but when I do, I enjoy it,” Tony explained. “I run pretty much everything for the company…too much office, but it makes me actually really enjoy going to do a stock job.”

“I condition a dog…I want him doing what he needs to do, and I don’t need to be sitting there going left-right-left-right.”

Tony’s perspective on dog training is pretty practical. He believes in letting dogs learn naturally and develop their skills without overtraining. In his view, dogs need to be exposed to real work conditions where they can make decisions and understand how to manage livestock independently. His approach is rooted in trusting the instincts of his dogs, allowing them to handle pressure and find their own way.

One of Tony’s key philosophies is allowing the dogs to figure out their roles naturally.

“You’ve got to put pressure on animals so that they need to understand what it is and how to handle it... somewhere along the line, they’re going to get stress put on them.” He acknowledges that dogs have a natural ability to manage livestock, and by trusting this ability, handlers can get the best out of their animals.

Beyond his work on the farm, Tony is also actively involved in the dog trialing community. He has participated in dog trials across Australia, including yard trials, utility trials, cattle dog trials, and enjoys the challenge they present. Trialing, for Tony, is not just about winning but about learning, watching other handlers, and improving his understanding of how dogs think and work. “I don’t care about the judge, that’s his job, and I do mine,” he remarked, emphasizing how much he enjoys the process of trialing.

Tony’s passion for trialing led him to explore different parts of Australia, meet fellow handlers, and deepen his knowledge of the sport. “You see a bit of country, catch up with a few mates, and run a dog or two”. His travels and participation in trials have shaped his outlook on dog training and how to get the best out of his animals.

Despite his passion for dogs, Tony admits to being a selfconfessed lazy trainer, preferring to condition his dogs through real-world work rather than strict, repetitive training. This laid-back approach, however, doesn’t diminish his effectiveness as a trainer or his dogs’ ability to perform well in trials and on the farm. “I condition a dog…I want him doing what he needs to do, and I don’t need to be sitting there going left-right-left-right,” he explained. His ability to adapt to his dogs’ needs and work with their natural tendencies is a testament to his deep understanding of animal behavior.

Tony’s influence extends beyond his farm. He has become a mentor to many aspiring handlers, often running dog schools where he teaches others about stock handling and dog training. His emphasis on stock education and the importance of calm, efficient stock handling reflects his production-oriented mindset. By focusing on improving livestock management, Tony helps farmers achieve better results, not just with their dogs but with the overall productivity of their farms.

“The biggest thing I enjoy about schools is learning more,” Tony said, adding, “People ask you questions, and you go, ‘I don’t know,’ so you stew on it, go play with the dog, and figure it out.”

Ultimately, Tony Overton’s story is one of a lifelong dedication to farming, working dogs, and continuous learning. His journey from a small-town farm kid to a respected manager and dog handler highlights his love for the land, his animals, and the people he works with.

Through his stud Gwydir Kelpies and his contributions to the dog trialing community, Tony continues to shape the future of working dogs in Australia while staying true to his roots and the lessons he learned from his father: to think differently, work hard, and always be open to learning.

Grassvalley Flake, a striking white Border Collie, embodies these qualities. Owned by Bill Davidson, Flake has become a trusted partner, proving that success comes not only from raw talent but also from loyalty and reliability.

Flake’s story started in 2018 when Bill brought her to New South Wales as a four-month-old pup from Grant Cook in Western Australia. She was bred from strong Western Australian bloodlines, with Grassvalley Floss as her dam and Boylee Blue as her sire. Bill was particularly drawn to her pedigree, as it traced back to Grassvalley Moss, a dog he had admired during his time competing in New Zealand.

“Her enthusiasm was balanced by a calmness that made training her easier than most.”

“She was a pretty little thing—white with a bit of black speckle on her ears,” Bill recalls. More than her looks, it was her temperament that caught his attention. Even as a pup, Flake always showed a natural ability to work.

She was keen and free moving, but unlike many highenergy young dogs, she never overworked herself. Her enthusiasm was balanced by a calmness that made training her easier than most.

Bill describes her early days with fondness. “She wasn’t one of those dogs you’d call brilliant right from the start, but she had the basics down. She was always honest, dependable. You knew what you were going to get every time you worked her.” This kind of consistency is a hallmark of Flake’s character, and it’s something Bill has come to value deeply.

Flake’s easy-going nature made her relatively straightforward to break in. She certainly had some faults that needed working on, but her willingness to learn and her steady eye on the stock meant that the process was smooth. For Bill, that was a blessing. “You didn’t have to fight with her to get her working. She gave you her best every time and didn’t make things difficult.”

Despite her unassuming nature, Flake has built an impressive record in the sheepdog trialling circuit.

She won the National Maiden at just two years old and the NSW State Improver title a week later.

Although her trialling opportunities were limited when she was younger due to COVID and work commitments, she remained a consistent finalist in numerous trials, winning a few opens along the way.

Her most notable achievement came just recently when she and Bill took home the top prize at the Supreme Australian Championship in Geelong earlier this year.

Yet, Bill doesn’t measure Flake’s worth by the number of titles she’s won. Instead, he values her for her unwavering dedication and work ethic. “She’s not the kind of dog that’s going to blow you away with one brilliant run, but she’ll always give you everything she’s got,” he says. This reliability, in Bill’s view, often outshines the occasional brilliance of other dogs that may not be as consistent or dependable.

Working with Flake has been a partnership in every sense of the word. She’s not a dog that tries to work on her own terms but rather wants to work with Bill. “There is something special about a dog that works with you, not just for itself. Flake has that quality,” Bill explains.

Flake’s strengths lie in her walk-up power and her ability to control the stock with a calm presence, despite her lighter coat colour, which can sometimes diminish a dog’s visual impact on sheep. Her steadiness in the paddock makes her a reliable asset, even if she occasionally lacks the cover that clever dogs have when sheep break.

However, when the conditions suit her, she is more than capable of handling any challenge.

Bill has bred Flake once, resulting in a litter with mixed success. While some pups showed promise, there was variability in the litter. Nonetheless, there is one particularly handy dog from that joining who now works with a lady in Dubbo.

“She’s not the kind of dog that’s going to blow you away with one brilliant run, but she’ll always give you everything she’s got,” Bill is hopeful to breed Flake again before she gets too old, aiming to preserve her qualities for future generations.

Looking back on their journey together, Bill speaks with a deep sense of pride and appreciation for Flake. “She’s always been there, always reliable.

Sometimes, a dog like that will bring you more success than one that’s only brilliant in spurts.”

Flake may not be the flashiest dog in a lineup, but her reliability, honesty, and strong work ethic make her an invaluable partner for Bill.

Grassvalley Flake has proven that true success comes from more than just natural talent. It’s built on trust, hard work, and a strong partnership between dog and handler. For Bill, Flake’s unwavering commitment and dependable nature make her not just a champion in the field, but a companion he wouldn’t trade for the world.

Well started on sheep, will back and bark in the race, starting to work sheep in the paddock and has had a couple looks at cattle. She is sired by Karana Tom X and her dam is Karana Cocoa. The purchaser said she is lovely soft bitch and he was looking forward to taking her to work!

Another first time vendor Lucy McGuire from Blackall QLD sold the 2nd top priced dog “Frankie” a 2 year kelpie bitch for $16,000 to repeat purchasers Simwood Holdings, Hume Simpson of Bollan QLD. Lucy’s partner Jack Kings sold his dog Smooth Sweeney for $8,000 to Keith Logan of Logan Cattle Company, Meandarra QLD, both these dogs were purchased through Auctions Plus.

Ever consistent vendors Jeremy and Annie Grills sold Lot 14 Mandalay Goose a 19 month old dog for $15,500 to repeat buyer Laurie O’Kane of Ben Lomond and Lot 31 Mandalay Goofy for $11,000 to Jay Worley.

Other sales of note were Archie Eggins from Clarenza selling 6 month old Narla for $6,500 to Steven Bulmer of Bolivia; youngest dog in the catalogue 4 month old Border Collie pup Crokers Dave was sold by Zac Croker to Simon Booth of Nutrien Ag, Toowoomba for $3,500.

Top priced border collie, lot 42 Scotch Valley Bonnie was sold account Mark Gibbons. Purchased by Peter Hewitt through Forbes Livestock. Bonnie was described by Mark as being an above average bitch for her age (14 months) and who was a pleasure to take to work. Bauers Goose account Bob Cunningham sold for $5,500 to Selena McMullen of Glencoe and Bauers Louie account Connor Ryan also sold for $5,500.

Purchasers came from across Australia with dogs going to Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and Queensland. The sale was interfaced with Auctions Plus and numerous dogs were purchased online.

After a postponed event due to weather in August, the Boonah Working Stock Dog Club - Cattle Trial finally took place on the 12th of October, drawing a strong turnout of competitors from Central Queensland, New South Wales, and Southeast Queensland. A total of 124 entries were set to compete on the well-handled Droughtmaster weaners generously supplied by Jim, Margaret, and Katrina Harvey. Although a storm threatened the day’s proceedings, it only served to heighten the cattle’s energy, allowing the triallers to push forward with determination into the evening, culminating in the Maiden Final.

The second day commenced bright and early with the Novice Final, followed by the highly anticipated Open Final. Afterward, the Triangle Horse Sale Dog Auction took center stage, where several impressive dogs were put

up for sale. The standout was Maggie, sold by Andrew Daniels from LeafCreek Working Stock Dogs for an impressive $8,000, highlighting the quality and demand for well-trained working stock dogs.

A special presentation was held by the Queensland Working Cattle Dog Association (QWCDA) to recognize Paul Wroe of Buckles, who took home honors for both the Australian and Queensland Open Dog of the Year, as well as Queensland Novice Dog of the Year. Paul’s commitment paid off as he claimed victory in both the Open and Novice categories, making his 1,000-kilometer journey truly worthwhile. The event concluded with heartfelt thanks to the dedicated team, sponsors, and competitors for making the trial a success and for fostering the spirit of sportsmanship and skill in the working dog community.

The Australian Working Stock Dog Auction is an independent, online auction platform, designed and dedicated specifically for the Australian working stock dog industry. We host online auctions for all ages and breeds of working dogs and pups, from all over Australia, every three months.

The Australian Working Stock Dog Auction is founded and operated by Jamie Sturrock and Isaac Hotz.

We are stockmen and graziers from Queensland and have spent our entire careers working cattle, sheep, and goats. We became great mates through a shared passion for working dogs and livestock. We have both lived and breathed working dogs for more than twenty years now. Breeding, training, working, buying, selling, trialling and teaching others. We have worked together in the past, and there wouldn’t be many weeks go by over the years, that we haven’t caught up to talk all things working dogs and livestock.

We have decades of experience buying and selling working stock dogs, both privately and at auction.

There is no doubt that there is demand in Australia for well-bred, well-trained working stock dogs. Quite often, the challenge in sourcing a quality working dog or pup, is not as much about price, as it is about knowing what is out there, and finding the right article! It has always been a bit of a lottery, trying to source the ideal working dog, from the right person, at the right time.

A significant percentage of dogs at physical working stock dog auctions are selling online already. Many dogs are purchased sight unseen, by bidders from all over Australia.

There are some outstanding working dogs, as well as rare and special genetics, hidden out there in the Australian bush. Some buyers would ‘give an arm and a leg’ to have the chance to acquire these lots, if they knew they existed in the first place!

These types of transactions are beneficial to the seller AND the buyer, so our goal is to bring the two together.

We are looking to bring some transparency to the industry by providing a platform to showcase the best working dogs and genetics from all over the country, and give willing buyers the opportunity to get their hands on them.

Consistency!

Most working dog auctions in Australia are run annually. If a vendor wants to sell at their local auction, they need to be committed to that date, regardless of the age or level of their dog.

We are providing vendors the opportunity to sell their dog when the dog is ready, instead of being based around an annual event at a set date. Quarterly sales means that if a young dog isn’t quite ready for one sale, the seller knows that there is another sale right around the corner. There is no pressure to sell a dog that isn’t prepared or presented to their best potential.

We have rarely seen a working dog or pup add much value for the seller or the buyer, in a three-minute demonstration, at a country showground, on a few head of livestock.

Lockdowns in previous years have proved to us that the industry is ready! Physical location is no longer a limitation.

Timed, simultaneous auctions..

This platform is about finding the right dog at a budget that suits.

Our timed auctions are run over six days. This gives buyers the chance to bid on multiple lots with plenty of time, and no pressure!

Simultaneous bidding means that if a buyer ‘blows their budget’ on a lot later in the sale, they can go back and bid on an earlier lot that may still suit their price range. Again, this is beneficial to sellers AND buyers. The earlier lot gets a few extra bids they wouldn’t have otherwise, and the buyer doesn’t miss out on a suitable dog because they held out for a lot later in the sale.

There is no advantage or disadvantage based on a lot’s position in the sale.

How will you ensure that the dogs are advertised accurately and honestly?

We are adamant about building a national network of genuine, honest, reputable, REPEAT buyers and sellers!

From a buyer’s perspective, if they can’t find what they need at one sale, there is no need to panic and buy an unsuitable dog or spend too much money. They can ‘shop’ with confidence, knowing that there will be another quality selection of working dogs and pups available in just a few months’ time.

Sellers are strongly encouraged to provide as much detail as possible in their videos, photos and descriptions to accurately represent their dogs. It is also a requirement that sellers make their dogs available for inspections and demonstrations by appointment.

This consistency of dates on a trusted, familiar platform allows everyone to plan ahead and be flexible. This is beneficial for sellers, buyers, AND the dogs!

Buyers are strongly encouraged to contact the seller directly, and inspect the dogs in person where possible.

The success of this platform relies on genuine, honest, transparent sellers, and savvy buyers that do their due diligence.

We would rather you didn’t buy a dog, than buy a dog that you aren’t happy with!

When Tom Perkins received the call from Kellie Savage, Cobber’s Marketing Manager, he was taken by surprise.

“Kellie gave me the phone call, and I was a bit shocked, to be honest,” Perkins admitted. But as the news sank in, the excitement and pride followed. His dog Bear had been crowned champion of the 2024 Cobber Challenge Masters Edition, a title earned through sheer hard work and dedication.

Bear isn’t just another working dog on the farm. Perkins proudly calls him one of the best he’s ever had. “He’s definitely up there,” he said. “He’s got a fantastic attitude and temperament, which is so important for the long, hard days we face on the farm. Bear loves being up at daylight, working all day, and still has the patience to play with the kids. That kind of balance is rare.”

The Cobber Challenge isn’t just about showcasing hardworking farm dogs; it’s a celebration of their vital role in Australian agriculture. The Masters Edition this year was something special, featuring only an elite selection of dogs. Savage explained, “This year, we invited only the best of the best—dogs that had proven themselves at trials, state, or national levels, or had a history of working with us. We wanted to highlight just how incredible these animals are.”

Bear certainly lived up to the billing. Over the course of the challenge, he covered an incredible 40-50 kilometres a day while managing farm work alongside Perkins. For Tom, the timing couldn’t have been better, as the challenge coincided with a busy lambing season. “We had to bring all the sheep through for drenching and fly spraying,”

AROUND THE GROUNDS Perkins said. “It was two weeks of intense work, but Bear stepped up every single day. He makes it all look easy.”

Bear’s journey to becoming a champion started with an unexpected moment of connection. Perkins had gone to pick out a pup from a breeder in New South Wales when he noticed a three-month-old dog tied to a kennel, quietly observing him. “He was just watching my every move,” Perkins recalled. At the end of the visit, Perkins couldn’t resist asking, “What’s the story with the big Smokey pup?” The breeder explained that Bear was the last of a previous litter. Without hesitation, Perkins said, “I’ll take him.” That decision turned out to be life changing.

Bear was a natural from the start, needing very little training thanks to his exceptional instincts. “He just had this stock sense,” Perkins said. “Some dogs you really have to work with, but Bear just got it. He loves working and thrives on it.”

The competition was fierce, with talented teams from across the country vying for the top spot. Brad McDonald and Nell from Tasmania came in second place. Brad, a previous Cobber Challenge winner in 2017, was hoping to clinch another victory but was edged out by Perkins and Bear in the final stages. In third place were Ben Coster and Rip from New South Wales, another impressive team known for their consistent work across multiple properties.

Savage noted that this year’s competition was especially thrilling to watch. “It was so great to see these dogs doing

what they love every day,” she said. “They’re not just competing; they’re demonstrating the essential role they play in Australian farming. These dogs contribute directly to putting food on our tables.”

For Perkins, the win was as much about the recognition of Bear’s effort as it was about showcasing the role of working dogs in modern agriculture. “Good dogs like Bear are invaluable,” he said. “With staffing shortages becoming more common, having reliable, skilled dogs makes all the difference. They keep the stock calm, handle the workload, and allow us to manage things better overall.”

As for celebrating the big win? Perkins laughed, “I’ll give Bear an extra pat and maybe some extra Cobber tonight, but he wouldn’t want to rest. He’ll be back at it tomorrow because that’s what he loves—working.”

Looking ahead, the 2025 Cobber Challenge promises to be even bigger as it celebrates its 10th year alongside Cobber’s 40th birthday. Savage hinted at exciting plans, saying, “We’re still working on the details, but next year’s event will be something special.”

For now, though, Perkins and Bear can savor their hardearned victory. It’s a story of hard work, partnership, and a dog who proves that champions are made in the paddocks, not just on podiums.

Nowra Show Society, Young Women Development Day

For those who may not know, earlier in 2024, I was honored to be selected as the 2025 Sydney Royal AgShows NSW Hawkesbury Young Woman award recipient. This prestigious program, established in 1962 as The Showgirl competition, has a rich history of celebrating the contributions of young women in rural and regional communities. Over the years, it has evolved into a mentorship and leadership program aimed at empowering women to make a difference in the agricultural industry and their local areas.

The Young Woman program is more than just a title— it’s a platform to champion the stories, industries, and people that make up our vibrant agricultural landscape.

Participants have the chance to develop their public speaking, leadership, and networking skills while advocating for the issues and industries they are passionate about. For me, one of my biggest goals during my time in the program is to promote the vital role of working dogs in agriculture. These incredible animals are essential partners on farms, contributing to productivity and showcasing the unique bond between humans and animals in rural life.

Recently, I had the privilege of participating in the Nowra Show Society’s Young Women’s Day, an event that perfectly reflects the values of the Young Woman program. Held at the picturesque Nowra Showground, with its beautiful heritage features and the iconic Soldiers Memorial, the day was all about equipping young women with the skills and confidence to thrive in their personal and professional lives.

The day featured a series of inspiring and practical sessions. Lauren Elkins delivered an insightful presentation on “Wardrobe - How to Dress to Impress and Interview Techniques,” offering valuable tips to help participants feel confident and prepared in any professional setting. Lisa Horner’s session, “The Total Package - Everything You Need to Know,” followed, covering personal presentation, preparation, and the finer details of making a lasting impression. These sessions were some of my favorite parts of the day, as they provided practical, actionable advice that resonated with everyone in the room.

AROUND THE GROUNDS Another highlight was the visit to a local dairy farm, where we gained a fascinating insight into one of the region’s key industries. It was inspiring to see the hard work and dedication that goes into running a successful dairy operation and to appreciate the critical role agriculture plays in our everyday lives.

I want to extend my thanks to the Nowra Show Society for hosting such a meaningful event and for their commitment to empowering young women. The beautiful showground and welcoming atmosphere made the day even more special. I’d also like to thank the Hawkesbury District Agricultural Association (HDAA) for the opportunity to be part of this initiative.

As I continue my journey in the Young Woman program, I am excited to use this platform to champion the contributions of working dogs and advocate for the agricultural community as a whole. It’s a privilege to be part of a program with such a rich history and a bright future, helping to inspire and shape the next generation of rural leaders.

Supreme Australian Sheepdog Championship & Wayleggo Cup

From November 7 to 15, the 2024 Hypro Group Supreme Australian Sheepdog Championship took center stage at the Geelong Showgrounds. Despite unpredictable weather—complete with rain, hail and strong winds that challenged both competitors and spectators—the event was a resounding success and a testament to the organisers and competitors.

The competition was filled with memorable moments, crowned by Bill Davidson’s victory in the Open Championship with his exceptional dog, Grassvalley Flake. NSW’s Jon Cantrall also made waves by winning both the Novice and Improver categories alongside his skilled young dog, Wongaburra Puma.

Among the most heartfelt stories was the presentation of the Greg Prince Award, given to Amy Eighteen.

Judges Anthony Ireland and Ken Robinson recognized Amy’s commitment when she arrived just in time for her run, flustered yet determined, with her baby in tow.

Although her run did not unfold as she had hoped, it left an indelible mark on the judges and showcased the spirit of perseverance that defines sheepdog trialing.

Ted Gaby Interstate Challenge Winners - Team NSW, Mick Hudson, Will Goggin and Paul Darmody

AROUND THE GROUNDS The Ted Gaby Interstate Challenge brought more excitement, with Team NSW—Paul Darmody, Mick Hudson, and Will Goggin—securing victory and edging out Team QLD, made up of Bailey Knight, Geoff Gibson, and Craig Freestone, who finished as runners-up. The event highlighted the depth of talent and camaraderie that exists among competitors across states.

This year’s Supreme Australian Sheepdog Championship and Wayleggo Cup left a lasting impression, celebrating the hard work, dedication, and unmatched partnership between handlers and their dogs. Congratulations to all winners, place-getters, and everyone who contributed to making this event a standout in 2024.

Adding to the excitement was the Wayleggo Cup, a highly anticipated international test between Australia and New Zealand. Representing Australia were Will Goggin (NSW), Mick Hudson (NSW), Geoff Gibson (QLD), and Grant Cooke (WA), while New Zealand fielded a formidable team comprising Stuart Child, Ben Millar, Scott Hunter, and Leo Edginton.

The series was tightly contested, showcasing exceptional skill and seamless coordination. In the end, Australia emerged victorious, winning two out of three Tests and ensuring the Wayleggo Cup stayed on home soil. This victory was a source of pride for the Australian team and their supporters, proving their mettle against tough competition. The sportsmanship shared between the teams was commendable, embodying the spirit of mutual respect that runs deep in this sport.

A highlight off the week was the dinner at the White Eagle Hotel, which welcomed all participants to relax, share stories, and enjoy a meal together. This event fostered a sense of unity and provided a moment of respite amid the demanding schedule of the championship.

For those unable to be at Geelong in person, the live streaming of the championship was a welcome innovation.

With expert commentary provided by seasoned handlers, the broadcasts brought the action and nuance of each trial into homes across the country and even internationally, expanding the reach and engagement of the event.

The championship would not have been possible without the generous support of the Hypro Group and other business sponsors, who continue to play a vital role in sheepdog trialing. Attendees were encouraged to show their appreciation by supporting these businesses in return.

Run by Donna Lindley and Owen Mawbey, DCs Madra has quickly become a standout name for working dogs schools in New South Wales. Since its inception in 2021, the training school has provided a crucial platform for dog owners and handlers to hone their skills, especially during a time when COVID-19 put a hold on trials across the country.

The name DCs Madra itself holds special meaning: “DC” stands for Donna Campbell (Campbell being Donna’s Maiden name), and “Madra” is the Irish Gaelic word for dog, reflecting Donna’s Scottish and Irish heritage. This personal touch shows the deep cultural roots.

The weekends at DCs Madra are designed to provide a blend of practical training, community building, and hands-on learning with top trainers. Held in Cowra, these weekends cater to handlers at all levels, from beginners with young pups to seasoned competitors looking to refine their skills. With 12 schools completed and 181 participants to date, the demand for these training weekends is clear.

Each weekend begins on Friday afternoon, with participants arriving on the property. Donna and Owen offer accommodation for attendees, in a bedsit that is open to all during the day. Participants can also stay on the

property with people often staying using tents, caravans and swags, creating a warm and welcoming environment.

The property is well-equipped for working dog training, with yards that can be modified to suit different training needs, including corners, casting areas, and even a dedicated three-sheep bridge that Owen built.

On Saturday morning, the weekend kicks off with a hearty cooked breakfast, a specialty of Owen’s. This meal sets the tone for the day, allowing participants to relax and chat with the trainers and fellow handlers. The trainer for the weekend then takes time to meet the group, often using a whiteboard to outline the training plan and understand each handler’s goals. Every participant gets a chance to work their dog in front of the trainer, giving the trainer an opportunity to assess the dog’s ability and the handler’s style. This initial session allows the trainer to customize the day’s training based on the strengths and weaknesses observed.

Morning tea offers a quick break, but the real learning happens as the trainer dives into specific exercises.

Each trainer has a unique approach, and the weekends at DCs Madra offer exposure to different methods, giving participants a broad toolkit for training their dogs.

AROUND THE GROUNDS Over the years, DCs Madra has hosted some of the most well-respected trainers in the industry. For example: Robert Cox emphasizes fundamental rules, such as ensuring the dog always comes when called and maintains careful attention to its handler, “be careful, come when you’re called.”

Antony Mulder introduced “dry training,” which focuses on precision and preparedness without the need for livestock.

Kevin Howell reminds handlers that if they’re going to trials purely to win, they’re missing the true purpose. Trials began to showcase dogs, improve bloodlines, and give people— often working in isolation—a place to connect with others who share their passion. It’s about building community and celebrating the dogs and skills that bring everyone together.

Gary White emphasizes the importance of position and body language, teaching handlers how these subtle factors can dramatically influence a dog’s response and performance.

Steve Weyman advises against repetitive exercises, advocating for variety in training routines. “Change things up. Give the dog as much experience as possible,” he suggests, reinforcing the importance of exposing dogs to diverse challenges.

Other trainers, like David Motley, bring a calm demeanour that dogs respond well to, while Bill Davidson stresses the importance of precision, ensuring that handlers don’t accept less than the best from their dogs. Each trainer leaves a lasting impression on the participants, contributing to the development of both the handler and the dog.

The training weekends have a profound impact on attendees. Megan White, a regular participant, credits DCs Madra for giving her the confidence to train her dog, Monty. “If it wasn’t for your schools, I wouldn’t have Monty,” Megan shared, highlighting not only the friendships she has formed but also the diverse training methods she has been exposed to.

Samantha Cooper echoed this sentiment, expressing how the schools gave her the confidence to trust her dog and push beyond what she thought was possible. “It’s given me the confidence to trust my dog and to try new things... We can do things we never thought possible”.

However, each session has left him with clear goals—some achievable with ease, others requiring patience, and a few still works in progress. For Ted, this ongoing journey is part of the learning process, as each step brings him closer to his dogs and enhances his own growth. “We grow old learning,” he says, noting that his dogs’ abilities reflect his own achievements. He describes DCs Madra as a truly special place that has added significant meaning to his training experience.

Other attendees, like Jessica Tebbutt, noted the transformation in her six-month-old pup, who is now beginning to show signs of being a capable working dog. “Everything is clicking,” she said, looking forward to returning for more schools in 2025. Lilli Tickle, who attended a Kevin Howell clinic, described it as “one of the best things I’ve done for myself and my dogs,” highlighting how the knowledge she gained has helped her not just with the pup she brought but with all her working dogs.

Starting during the height of COVID-19 posed significant challenges for Donna and Owen. They had to adhere to strict government regulations, including managing the number of participants, enforcing social distancing, and maintaining thorough contact tracing records. Despite these hurdles, the school continued without any outbreaks, thanks to careful planning and adherence to safety protocols.

In a world where many events were cancelled, DCs Madra stood out as a beacon of hope for handlers who were eager to continue their learning journey.

Looking forward, Donna and Owen have ambitious plans to expand DCs Madra’s offerings. They aim to host six training weekends a year, with a 2025 lineup that includes notable trainers like Fred Rains, Jon Cantrall, Robert Cox, Antony Mulder, David Motely and Matthew Sherwood.

They are also exploring the possibility of hosting trainers from New Zealand, further enriching the learning experience for participants. The couple’s long-term vision extends beyond the schools, as they encourage handlers to compete in trials and offer personalized training on their property.

o kick things off, I’d like to introduce myself.

My name is Chris Soderlund, and I run two cattle properties—one in the Northern Rivers and the other on the Mid North Coast. Since August 2023, I’ve managed these two properties, and before that, I was running my own small operation while working casually elsewhere. On my own property, I didn’t use working dogs, as the size didn’t justify it, but things changed when I took on the larger operations at Hanging Rock Station and another property at Nana Glen. With approximately 800 head of cattle across both farms, using a combination of rotational and conventional grazing, I quickly realized I was in new territory. The landscape here varies from open paddocks to steep, heavily timbered sections, which added to the challenges.

When I took on this new role, the operation was already in the middle of a cattle tick eradication program that required treating all cattle every three weeks. I was

“The support I’ve received from the working dog community has been invaluable.” fortunate to have a team of excellent contract stockmen who assisted with mustering and processing cattle, but as I began to handle more of the day-to-day movements on my own, I quickly hit some roadblocks. Moving the cattle from one grazing cell to another wasn’t too difficult, but anytime I needed to shift the cattle to new areas or take them to the yards for treatment, things became much more complicated. The cattle were “dogbroke,” meaning they were accustomed to working with dogs, and without dogs in the mix, moving them became a slow, difficult, and often frustrating process.

Navigating the paddocks and especially the large 1,000-acre paddock that borders the Mann River was nearly impossible without dogs. This paddock, hidden away behind a mountain, has plenty of timber and lantana, offering ideal hiding spots for cattle. I watched the stockmen’s dogs handle these challenging situations with ease, and I knew I needed to assemble my own team of dogs as soon as possible.

Within four weeks of starting, I had made up my mind. I needed a team of working dogs to manage this property effectively, and I needed them fast. On September 16th, I attended the Toogoolawah dog auction with the hope of buying one or two dogs. By the end of the auction, I had purchased two young dogs online from Stan Hughes of Husanley Stock Dogs— Flip and Tom. I was excited but also a bit nervous, as I had never trained dogs before, and both of these dogs would require more work. Flip had been lightly started, and Tom was even greener. When I contacted Stan to arrange their pick-up, I also booked into one of his upcoming training schools, knowing that I had a lot to learn.

Stan was kind enough to spend some time with me when I picked up the dogs. He showed me how they worked and gave me a few pointers on where to begin when I got home. I had six weeks before his school, and looking back, it was just the right amount of time to bond with the dogs and start to understand their personalities and abilities. Flip, being the older and more experienced of the two, started doing some small jobs for me. Meanwhile, Tom was still very much in the early stages of training, but I was determined to give both dogs my full attention. I spent hours researching training methods, reading articles, and watching videos online. Every day I would try something new and slowly, but surely, I began to make progress. Whenever I had questions, Stan was just a message away, offering practical advice that always helped me get back on track.

By the time Stan’s school came around, I was ready for the next level. The school provided clarity and structure, and I left with a solid plan for continuing the dogs’ development. Of course, not everything went smoothly, but I started to see real improvement in both Flip and Tom. In no time, I was shifting mobs of 150 cows with relative ease, and the satisfaction of being able to move cattle on my own, without waiting for extra help, was a game-changer.

Recognizing the immense value the dogs brought, I knew I needed to expand my team. In November, I attended the WDC auction at Carcoar and purchased a fully trained dog named Tuff. Tuff was a game-changer in every sense of the word. Not only could he handle any job I threw at him, but he also accelerated the development of Flip and Tom. With me at the helm, giving orders, the process wasn’t always perfect, but the job got done. The difference in my operation was dramatic, and I saw significant improvements in both efficiency and cost savings.

I then attended a school with David Bennett, which once again boosted my skills and confidence. Every time I attended a dog school, I left feeling more energized and equipped to handle the challenges ahead. The savings

started adding up quickly. Previously, mustering and processing all the cattle would take three days with two stockmen, at a cost of approximately $2,800 per session.

With treatments required every three weeks during the tick program, labor costs skyrocketed. However, with my dogs in place, I was able to save between $9,500 and $10,500 in labor over the course of the program.

Now that the tick eradication program is complete, my team and I can handle all mustering and processing ourselves. Without my dogs, I would still need to bring in at least one stockman, costing around $1,150 each time.

The dogs not only save on labor costs but also improve the overall efficiency and reduce stress on the cattle, which has been a significant win.

In just under a year, I’ve built a team that allows me to handle all the stock work on both properties without the need for additional labor. The confidence and calmness that come with having a well-trained dog team are unparalleled. Watching Flip and Tom continue to grow and face new challenges has been incredibly rewarding.

They are two very different dogs, and I’ve had to adapt my training to suit each of them, but the results speak for themselves. On those good days, when everything comes together, the sense of accomplishment is second to none.

The support I’ve received from the working dog community has been invaluable. People have been generous with their advice, and I’ve made lasting friendships through attending dog schools. I’ve even dipped my toes into the world of dog trialing, taking Flip and Tuff to the Bonalbo trial, where I had an absolute blast. I hope to attend more local trials this year for fun and to challenge myself further.

Looking ahead, I plan to start my own pup by the end of the year. Although having dogs from different breeders and trainers has created some challenges with commands and personalities, I wouldn’t change a thing. The experience has been an incredible learning opportunity. I’m grateful for the journey, the challenges, and the success I’ve had with my team so far.
