I. 프롤로그 - 최근작으로부터

마티에르란 물감과 미디엄이라는 질료가 이미지를 만들면서

작가 이유(Lee Eu)의 최근 작업은 “마티에르(Mati res)”,

남긴 흔적들이기 때문이다. 그녀의 진술을 보자: “화면에 담은

작가 이유의 최근작 “회화에 관한 질문”으로 다시 돌아오자. 이 작업은 그녀가 이전부터 진행 해오고 있는 “마티에르”와 “제스트”라는 두 연작이 골몰하고 있는 질료에 대한 성찰을 계승 하면서도 ‘질료에 개입하는 창작자의 이미지 생산’과 ‘질료 자체가 만드는 이미지 생산’에 관해서 질문한다. 그것을 우리는 가히 ‘회화의 본질에 대한 성찰과 질문’이라 평할 수 있겠다. 서구에서 20세기 추상 미술은 아방가르드, 엘리트주의, 국제 주의, 중심 지향 주의로 대표되는 모더니즘의 주역이었다. 세월이 바뀌어 다원주의가 지배하는 포스트모더니즘의 시대를 맞이한 21세기 미술 현장에는, 단토의 언급처럼, ‘예술 작품이 되도록 하는 양식(style)’이 특별히 존재하지 않는다. 오늘날 국내 추상 회화의 영역에서도 예외는 아니다. 위협을 받는 아방가르드 추상 미술의 과거의 명맥을 잇고자, 오늘날 포스트 단색화로 지칭되는, 일군의 추상 미술들이 속속 등장하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 다양한 매체를 실험하는 여러 유형의 추상 미술이 회화의 본질에 대해 성찰하고 있기 때문이다. 최근, 작가 이유의 추상 회화는 질료의 본질과 그것의 변주에 대해 깊이 성찰한다. 특히 묽은 물감이 야기한 우연한 효과, 즉 ‘창작자가 만든 붓질의 흔적을 지우면서 창작자가 주도하는 방향과 다르게 질주하는 묽은 질료의 변이’를 목도했던 작가 이유의 입장에서 이러한 질료에 대한 깊은 성찰은 필수적이다. 작가 이유는 “그림 앞에 선 관객이 이미지와 물리적인 관계를

이유 1976년 서울 태생의 작가 이유는 2007년부터 프랑스 파리를 기반으로 꾸준한 작업을 펼쳐나가고 있다. 그녀는 홍익대학교 회화과 재학 시절 1970년대 한국에서 발생한 추상 운동인 단색화 사조의 작가들과 사제의 연을 맺게 된다. 그리고 이 시기에 형성된 ‘마티에르(matière)로써의 재료’에 대한 탐구는 오늘날까지도 계속되고 있다.

2003년 프랑스로 이주하여 스트라스부르 장식 미술학교(École des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg)에서 석사 학위를 받은 그는 2007년, 1년 4개월간 파리국제예술공동체(Cité Internationale des Arts) 레지던시에 입주하여 활동했다. 이곳에서의 새로운 경험은 그녀의 예술적 지평, 특히 재료와 표면의 상관성에 관한 연구를 심화하고 확장시켰다. 이후 여러 차례의 전시 및 유명 기관과의 협업을 거쳐 대구예술발전소(Daegu Art Factory) 레지던시에 초청되었는데, 이 시기에 다시금 접하게 된 한국 현대미술의 고유한 양식 및 작가들과의 교류는 그녀가 자신의 뿌리와 정체성을 상기하는 계기가 되었다. 작가의 발자취에서 보이듯, 이유의 작업에는 한국 현대 미술의 전통성과 서양의 그라피티가 가진 무질서한 움직임 같은 상반된 성격들이 혼재되어 있다. 유년시절 이름도 모른 채 자연스럽게 접해온 이우환, 백남준, 클로드 비알라(Claude Viallat) 작품들과의 교류를 비롯해 인쇄라는 완전 평면 매체에서 끝없는 마띠에르 연구에 이르기까지의 경험들은 오늘날 그녀를 국제 무대에서 활동하는 한국 현대 작가 반열에 올렸다.

Lee Eu Born in 1976 in Seoul, South Korea, Lee Eu has been based in Paris since 2007. It was during her time as a fine arts major student at Hongik University (Seoul) from which she graduated in 1999, that she learned from the great masters of Dansaekhwa, a Korean non-figurative painting movement born in the 1970s. Lee Eu’s love for the fine arts was cultivated and fostered through this experience and is still prominent in her work today.

She arrived in France in 2003 and attended the school of decorative arts (École des Arts Décoratifs) in Strasbourg.

In 2007, a diploma in hand, she entered a 16 months residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Having these new experiences, as well as encountering artistic movements such as Supports/Surfaces, allowed the artist to broaden her artistic horizons.

After numerous exhibitions and acquisitions made by renowned institutions, Lee Eu briefly returned to her native country for a residency at Daegu Art Factory. The city of Daegu and its artists are particularly committed to preserving the authenticity of Korean traditions, which has provided the artist with an opportunity to return to her roots, find meaning and reflect on her personal and artistic identity.

Lee Eu is part of a new generation of international Korean artists who, while deeply rooted in their fundamental culture and movement, take advantage of their experiences beyond Korea. Now with artistic clarity, the artist looks back on her childhood spent admiring the works of Lee Ufan, Nam June Paik and Claude Viallat. Today, her work not only reflects Korean tradition but also conveys a feeling of nonchalance, disorder or spontaneity, also found in western graffiti.

Lors de ses études à l’Université Hongik (Séoul), où elle obtient un diplôme d’arts plastiques en 1999, elle est formée sous la tutelle des grands maîtres du Dansaekhwa, un mouvement coréen de peinture non-figurative né dans les années 1970. Cette expérience nourrit en Lee Eu un amour pour la matière, qui inspire et préoccupe toujours son travail aujourd’hui.

L’artiste arrive en France en 2003, elle intègre l’École des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg. Après l’obtention de son diplôme en 2007, elle entre en résidence dans la Cité Internationale des Arts, à Paris, pendant 16 mois. Ces nouvelles expériences, ainsi que la découverte de mouvements tel que le Supports/Surfaces, lui permettent d’étendre son horizon artistique.

Après avoir fait l’objet de plusieurs expositions, et d’acquisitions par des institutions de renom, Lee Eu retourne brièvement dans son pays natal au sein de la résidence artistique Daegu Art Factory. La ville de Daegu et ses artistes étant particulièrement axés sur la préservation de la tradition coréenne, l’artiste a l’opportunité de retrouver ses racines et de réévaluer son identité personnelle et artistique.

Lee Eu fait partie d’une nouvelle génération d’artistes coréens internationaux qui, tout en conservant les fondamentaux de leur culture et du mouvement, y apportent leurs expériences passées hors de Corée. Avec du recul, l’artiste attribue son éveil artistique à son enfance passée à côtoyer les oeuvres de Lee Ufan, de Claude Viallat et de Nam June Paik. Aujourd’hui, son travail reflète la tradition coréenne, mais il comporte également un sentiment de nonchalance, de désordre ou de spontanéité, qui peut rejoindre l’univers du graffiti occidental.
