An adaptive reuse project, B(o)at House reimagines the Michigan rowing club boathouse as a sanctuary and community education center for the Little Brown Bat. A native species, B(o) at House was conceived based on community desires for their neighborhood green space, where bugs were a common nuisance.

This space provides habitat while visitors can watch and learn about the native bat, or take one of the provided hammocks to the outside space to enjoy the river, stars or the sensory experience of the forest. Special red lights have been chosen for their neutral reactions with rhodopsin, the night vision chemical, allowing comfortable viewing of the nocturnal hunters at all times of the day.

“(Little Brown Bats)... must eat half their body weight in insects per night to prevent malnurishment. New mothers sometimes eat more than their own body weight in a single night.”

“Little brown bats primarily hibernate in caves and cave-like structures. They emerge from hibernation and disperse on the landscape for the summer and early fall. Females begin to form maternity colonies that can consist of two to more than 100 individuals.”

“Bat species make up 20% of all mammals.

Starting from a balloting process, how can these three materials fit together to form a shed? After many iterations we landed on a curved form, deriving the curve from the weight of the brick and the natural deformation of the mesh. Floating bricks were meant to maintain the floating effect using clear zipties, as permenent connections between materials were not allowed.

I was the only person on our team trained on the necessary machines in the woodshop to build our model. While Ryan and Charlotte were drawing the section and elevation on the next page, I was breaking down 1”x6” boards into 972 1” cubes, 35 1”x12” strips and building the base by gluing individual blocks to the base.

Primary Projector with Keon-Ho Lee

Understanding a materials behaviors and how its processing works leads to new and interesting designs. More experience in wood carving for example, allows for more detailed and nuanced forms, and this applies to every material in the fab lab.

This idea clicked for me during my last year of undergrad, while finishing my architecture and design minors. Making a high quality fab lab a priority when choosing grad schools. That’s why I have pushed myself so far in the woodshop, taking advanced trainings on all the machines, so that by now can easily and comfortably work on whatever project I set my mind upon.

The Primary Projector was a collaborative project with Keon-Ho Lee. Tasks were divided evenly, working together in prototyping, construction and documentation.

The Fisher House by Louis Khan was selected by our class to be the subject of the semester’s construction drawings. Each drawing building upon the others, until we had a clear understanding of construction sequence and representation within drawings.

Discount Dentistry Skate Wear

Late to class my freshman year, was hurriedly skating to class on my normal route. didn’t realize took the corner too wide until it was too late. Suddenly, I’m laying on the sidewalk, and a pool is forming around my face. So concussed didn’t fully come to till the emergency room, where had six broken bones in my face, four broken teeth, and 5% of my skin rubbed off on the road. Recovery was a brutal process of surgery and time, but one night the following winter, I came to a realization. If I’m missing four teeth, and thats one eight of the total, I should be getting a discount at the dentist, because they don’t have to do their full routine. I never did get that discount, but I had already claimed the title for my art brand.

Now looking for something to brand, got particularly motivated to create a clothing brand, something had always wanted to do, but assumed it wouldn’t happen till later. Through the process of launching Discount Dentistry products, I have taught myself silk screening, stamp making, and explored a new style of art and production. I never hesitated if it was too difficult a design challenge, because decided it was going to work.

AU SILK FACADE

As a team, we built a section of wall from the AU office space in Beijing. Before becoming an AU project, the site was a silk prodution plant, processing silk from harvest through distribution of silk sheets and threads. Following the architects drawings, we cured almost 200 custom cement blocks. Then by off setting the blocks from eachother by a small amount, the visual appearance changes from a solid wall to a sheet of silk blowing in the wind. In this process, I was in charge of the brick production, making sure we poured them all with enough time to cure, and overseeing the laying process.

Film and Dark Room

One of my favorite parts about studing abroad in Korea was the dark room. Having just gotten back from shooting film in Europe, soon after arriving in Korea I sought out the photography professor. After weeks of attending photo club meetings and workshops held in the dark room, I was finally given the access code, and permission to use the room whenver I needed. Along with the free black and white film, it gave me a chance to experiment with film, something was unwilling to do when buying a ten dollar roll at the store. I must’ve shot close to fifteen rolls of film in my five months there, developing and printing each in the dark room when they’re finished.

When began, focused mainly on the forms of the urban enviroment trying to avoid people. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon the olympic skate trials in Rome that started photographing people. Since then, have combined these two styles into a study on the built environment and the pedestiran experience, like in Daegu.

have been extremely fortunate to find these images, often far from the United States, but understanding the interplay between culture and form is usually much more obvious when encountering both for the first time.
