Villa Savoye Spring 23 // Foam Core // Adv Arch Design Work // Solo Completed almost 100 years ago, Villa Savoye is the perfect representation of the plan libre design language that propelled Le Corbusier to his stature as one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. The separation between public and private spaces, indoors and outdoors, and the continuity created by the ramp and spiral stairs, make it almost the perfect “machine to live in” Corbusier’s goal.

Constructed from 1928-1931, located outside Paris France, total creative control given to Corbusier. In 1939, the family residing in Villa Savoye had to abandon the house to escape the advancing Nazi army who occupied the home from 1940-1945 for the strategic location, until the end of the war.

Returning to the home in disrepair, the home was almost demolished in 1959, but saved by worldwide action by the public and prevaiors of the arts. In 1997 the home was opened to the public and awarded a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016.

Design Response to Villa Savoye Spring 23 // Bass Wood // Adv Arch Design Work // Solo Considering continutiy and using Villa Savoye as design inspiration, the goal was to create a guest house one might see on the same property as the famous one.

The guest house I created uses similar architectural forms as Corbusier in Villa Savoye, a sweeping rounded entrence, pilotis, ribbon windows, lots of outdoor space, and distance between public and private spaces.

For the model construction, I didn’t want a repeat of my Villa Savoye model, about forty hourse of work, so I began to explore other methods of modeling. The final version laser cut each piece from a bass wood sheet. Then all I had to do was glue them together and give it a coat of paint.

During the review for this project, I was told I “designed this house like a urban planner would.” Since then, it has been an internal battle to both embrace an alternative way of thinking about architecture, and still creating a functional, ejoyable architectural space.

Contrasting Culture and Form Personal Project // Solo One of my favorite parts about being at the Utah Asia Campus was the dark room.

Having just gotten back from shooting film in Europe, soon after arriving in Korea I sought out the photography professor. After weeks of attending photo club meetings and workshops held in the dark room, I was finally given the access code, and permission to use the room whenver I needed. Along with the free black and white film, it gave me a chance to experiment with film, something I was unwilling to do when buying a ten dollar roll at the store. I must’ve shot close to fifteen rolls of film in my five months there, developing and printing each in the dark room when they’re finished.

When I began, I focused mainly on the forms of the urban enviroment trying to avoid people. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon the olympic skate trials in Rome that I started photographing people. Since then, I have combined these two styles into a study on the built environment and the pedestiran experience, like the one opposite.

Discount Dentistry Skate Wear Personal Solo Project // Silk Screen and Rubber Stamp on Cotton Late to class my freshman year, I was hurridly skating to class on my normal route. I didn’t realize I took the corner too wide until it was too late.

Suddenly, I’m laying on the sidewalk, and a pool is forming around my face.

So concussed I didnt fully come to till the emergency room, where I had six broken bones in my face, four broken teeth, and five percent body coverage of road rash. Recovery was a brutal process of surgery and time, but one night the following winter, I came to a realization. If I’m missing four teeth, and thats one eigth of the total, I should be getting a discount at the dentist, becuase they dont have to do their full routine. I never did get that discount, but I had already claimed the title for my art brand.

Now looking for something to brand, I got particulally motivated to create a clothing brand, something I had always wanted to do, but assumed it wouldnt happen till later. Through the process of launching Discount Dentistry products, I have taught myself silk screening, stamp making, and explored a new style of art and production. I never hesitated if it was too difficult a design challange, because to me, the hardest part was loosing my teeth.

Arch-Union Facade Construction Summer 23 // Cement // Adv Arch Fund Studio // Group - Cole Anderson, Grant Gibson, Abi Tenangueno This summer project was tackled by a group of four including myself. We chose this facade as a challenge to our mass manufactoring knowldge. The process began with the creation of a 3d model of the CMU. Then we took several of the printed versions and used them to make silicon molds. Finally, we spent the next week pouring concrete every day, to create the almost 200 CMUs we needed.

We formed our base with concrete, strengthening it with chicken wire in the bottem and bolts screwed halfway into the wood.

To create the ripple effect, each CMU was placed at a predetermined angle. Using the grasshopper plugin on rhino, we were able to assign each block incriments of rotation by 15 degrees to create illusion of flowing silk, the inspieration and previous use of the original building in Shanghai.

Iteration Project Spring 23 // Cardstock // Adv Arch Design Work // Solo This is a project that I wish was assigned sooner in my undergraduate career.

Due to its fast pace, it definetly felt overwhelming at first, but this feels like the first project to force intention behind iteration. It was the start of a process thats still in progress, my close examination of my process work, and trying to be very intentional with each design choice I make, not just throwing some ideas together and calling it a project. Over the past year, these have been my main focuses in design coursework, but my undergraduate program is coming to an end, and I havent finished developing what I feel is a comprehensive and efficient process. This project helped show me how much I have to grow as a designer, and I am thrilled to continue developing my process and final results by persuing a masters degree.

Salt Lake Science Center Summer 23 // Revitt // Adv Arch Fund Studio// Solo When doing site research for this project, I was excited to see what kind of information the state park visitors center would have about the lake that gives Salt Lake its name. Only to be incredibly dissappointed by fading and dirty exhibit crammed into the “lodge”, a tow behind trailer.

High quality engagement of science education is critical to getting kids interested in science, and with these methods, the state park acts as nothing but a scientific determent. But through the development of a new science center, science education could get kids excited about their communities and the enviroment through interactive exhibits, panaramic views of the lake, and learning about its impact on all of Utah.

Einstein’s Dreams 26 April 1905 Fall 23 // Collage // Design Minor Studio Capstone // Solo Einstein’s Dreams is an fictional anthology of short stories about the dreams that inspired the theory of relativity. Published in 2004, each chapter considers time in a world different from our own, dreamt by the scientist in the month leading up to his discovery.

In this chapter, time moves slower further form the center of the Earth, and although the difference is minisqual, the rich race to build their homes on the tallest mountains, propping them up on stilts to age just a little bit slower than those below them. The people living up highest may never decend a single step for fear of withering away too quickly.

As generations pass, the time difference is forgotten, but the high ups still look down upon everyone else in every way, but in the presuit of long life, they have taken to habits, like barely eating, which eventually causes premature symptoms of aging and death.
